Letter From The Publisher

Greetings, April showers bring May flowers. In celebration of Earth Day this month, plant some May flowers with your kids, teach them about recycling, conserving water, or any of the many tips PB Parenting has compiled on page 8. We are passionate about mother earth and preserving it for our future generations. Sharing our passion is Temple Beth-El of Boca Raton, read up on their LEED Certified green campus on page 10. Perhaps they can inspire you to make a few small changes in your own home. Switching to energy efficient light bulbs, changing the air filter in your air conditioner, or installing aerators on your faucets and shower heads to use less water can add up in the long run. School will be out soon and summer will be here! Keep the kids busy all summer long! PB Parenting has your summer camp needs covered with our directory on page 14. There is a camp that will fit your child’s interests from art, cooking, science theatre, dance, gymnastics, sports and more. We are growing! PB Parenting is pleased to welcome to our staff, Account Executives Abbie Helman and Courtney Portnof. Congratulations are also in order to Jennifer Preville who was recently promoted to Advertising Director. Don’t forget to connect with us on facebook and subscribe to our weekly e-newsletter so you can keep up-to-date on the latest happenings in Palm Beach County. Happy Parenting,

Community Cares Resource Depot reusing to help arts, education and the environment Every day is Earth Day at the Resource Depot. The staff and volunteers are kept busy collecting donated materials – anything clean, safe and reusable with a classroom in mind – and makes these resources available to teachers for use in their classrooms and programs. Any Palm Beach County educator, including homeschool parents, daycare and aftercare providers, and educational nonprofit organizations such as Scouts, can become a member for a nominal annual fee, and all the materials are free. In addition, Resource Depot brings “art with an environmental twist” to the public through school field trips, workshops on creative reuse, and provides hands-on arts activities for all ages at local community events. Resource Depot is a 501c3 non-profit agency and has been operating in Palm Beach County for 14 years. Their mission is to keep reusable things out of the landfills in a way that benefits local educators and their students. How can you help support their mission? The Little Green Pouch® was invented out of necessity by two Moms, Maggie Crawford and Melissa Winn. They created the Little Green Pouch® a reusable food pouch which is BPA/Phthalate free, simply seals with a handy zipper and is dishwasher/freezer safe. It’s an essential for kids and adults - perfect for little hands and a bright green design keeps them smiling every time. Additional accessories and recipes online. Check out their website at: www. littlegreenpouch.com Invented by a Mom and Dad team, Shannon Cox knew there had to be a better way to stop to the number of spills in the home and on-the go. They invented the Spill Spoiler™. The BPA, Phthalate, PVC Free cap has two caps, one to fit various sports drinks and the other to fit standard-size baby bottles and pediatric nutrition drinks with an internal valve which works with drinking straw to avoid spillage if the bottle is knocked over. If the straw is removed from the cap, the valve seals the straw opening to prevent spills. Check out their website at: www.Spillspoiler.com. Jennie Hammers found her daughter was allergic to plastic at a young age and created the 100% Organic Cotton eco•ditty™ bag that helps you carry your perishable and dry food items in style. You’re keeping a plastic sack out of the landfill as well as dangerous toxins like BPA and PVC out of your body, which can be washed and reused 100’s of times. eco•ditty™ only uses only GOTScertified, fair-trade fabrics in their products. Your Family’ s Earth-Friendly Guide BY SARA KENDALL April is a great time for you and your family to connect with nature. It is comfortable outside without the heat of May and June. This month also brings us Earth Day on April 22. Earth Day is recognized around the world as a day for communities to take action to help protect our planet.

When selecting a preschool, many parents focus on staff, accreditation, cost of tuition and perhaps toward the bottom of that list is being eco-friendly. Maybe you noticed a recycling bin or energy efficient light bulbs while touring schools. But being a “green” school is actually about more than recycling. It can be very beneficial to your child’s health. Temple Beth-El of Boca Raton’s Beck Family Campus is a LEED Silver certified education facility. It received the award in 2010 for its efforts to make the campus green. According to the US Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED Certification Registration, it is the first Jewish educational facility in Florida to achieve LEED for Schools Green Building Certification. You may be wondering what exactly it means to be LEED Certified. LEED Certification (Leadership in Energy and

Environmental Design) is a set of standards that have to be met and documented in order for a building to be awarded LEED status. Wanting to know more, we had a chat with Steve Kaufman, Executive Director at Temple Beth-El of Boca Raton, who explained what it takes for a building to become LEED certified and how beneficial it is not only for the environment but for the children that learn and play at the Beck Family Campus every day. Kaufman is a LEED Accredited professional and knows “green”. During campus construction in 2008 and 2009, he worked at Kaufman-Lynn Construction and lead the certification process. One of the first examples Kaufman discussed was air quality and mold prevention. The humid, moist air of South Florida can make mold abundant inside and out. The campus has a special HVAC (heating, ventilation and

(Pictured left) The 26-foot-high canopy at Temple Beth-El’s Beck Family Campus connects the classrooms allowing a profusion of light while protecting students from hot sunrays. Under the canopy, meandering walkways, benches, trees, grass and streetlights provide an abundance of green space in a park-like atmosphere.

air conditioning system) that strictly controls the relative humidity of the building, pulling out excess humidity which helps prevents mold in the building. Another great feature of the ventilation system is that instead of recycling the existing air like a traditional system, it brings in fresh air which reduces the circulation of germs, improving the air we breathe. Speaking of air, ever love that “new car smell?” Kaufman explained that while that new car smell might be appealing, it is really the smell of the plastics and new carpet “off gassing” and releasing toxins. When the campus was built, part of the certification process required the use of Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) materials. The glue, sealants, carpet, drywall, flooring and vinyl all had to be low VOC. The health benefits of these materials outweigh extra cost as they emit less chemicals and toxins into the environment, and result in children breathing in clearer air. Besides these great examples of how this building is safer and healthier for its occupants that work, learn and play in it, Kaufman also explained how the building is energy and water efficient as well. The entire building utilizes as much natural light as possible from the big picture windows in the classrooms and the huge canopy overhead. It diffuses light which reduces heat and is more pleasant than direct light. Kaufman told us that “studies show children are apt to learn and enjoy their environment more with natural light versus fluorescent light.” Natural light also reduces energy cost. The campus is also saving water for future generations by being water efficient inside and out. Dual flush toilets and motion sensor

faucets help the campus use at least 20% less water than a building of comparable size. Outside water is also being saved at the beautifully landscaped campus. It was designed with native plants that require little to no water. Also don’t let the beautiful green grass in the courtyard fool you, it is faux astroturf which doesn’t require water, chemicals, pesticides or fertilization. Children can sit and play on it without being exposed to harmful chemicals. When we think of going green, one of the most common associations is recycling. The campus has an on-going recycling program with bins placed in prominent places for paper, glass and plastic. But even before it opened the campus was doing it’s part to recycle. During the construction phase, 65% of all the construction waste (extra carpet, wood, materials etc.) was recycled. If you’d like more information on how to get your building LEED certified, go to the US Green Building Council’s web site, www.new.usgbc. org/leed/certification. The six-acre campus at 9800 Yamato Rd. in Boca Raton is located on the south side of Yamato Road just east of 441. It includes an infant care center and outdoor play area, early childhood educational center and playground, religious school, multi-purpose room and administrative offices. Once they have sprouted roots, assist your child in transplanting the sprouted beans directly into pots and place in a sunny spot in your home. For planting the beans with just roots, place the white roots pointing down, and completely cover with soil. For the beans with roots, stems and leaves, place the roots pointing down, and keep the stem and leaves exposed. Press the soil firmly around the stem. Ask your child to check

on the growing beans every couple of days, and make sure to keep the soil moist. He will like being the one in charge of watching over the growing seedlings. The seedlings can be transferred outside. At this stage you can either keep them in their pots or transfer them directly into the ground. This will afford another opportunity for your child to get their hands dirty when they place the seedlings in their final home. Assign the watering duties to your child. This will give him some ownership of the process and a sense of pride as they grow. Your child is sure to gain a sense of accomplishment as he watches over his plants as they grow to full maturity. Participating in the full circle of a plant growth cycle will give your child hands on knowledge of a how a plant grows up. Sara Kendall is a freelance writer and mother of two daughters.
