Cloth vs. Disposable Diapers The choice between reusable cloth diapers and disposable diapers has long been the subject of research and debate. There are numerous factors to consider when making the choice and parents need to be fully informed in order to make the best decision. While it is important to consider the convenience and effectiveness of our choice, we also need to look at the environmental impact; After all we need to do what is best for our children now and in the future. Government research shows that disposable diapers are the third largest individual constituent of municipal solid waste accounting for somewhere between 1.5% and 4% of the total amount. There are various estimates on the amount of waste the average child wearing disposable diapers is responsible for but the most conservative estimate is about a quarter of a ton per year and climbing. While some argue disposable diapers can be composted, it is important to note that there is an estimated 82,000 tons of
plastic consumed by disposable diapers in the US annually that cannot be composted. Both reusable diapers and disposable diapers consume fossil fuels for energy. While manufacturing of disposable diapers and the cleaning process of reusable diapers are both pollutants, the energy consumption from washing diapers still remains much lower and continues to decline as washing machines become more efficient. In summary, choosing cloth diapers over disposable is still the most environmentally friendly choice. Why Use Cloth Diapers? • Natural fabric – no chemicals • Lots of savings • Potty train faster sources: diapernet.org; livestrong.com; Scientific American.com

Picking a Summer Camp: Planning a Summer of Fun for your Children
By Joshua Cohen
Summer can only mean one thing,
SUMMER CAMP! While many people view summer camp as the scenes depicted in Meatballs and other movies, the landscape of what is offered has changed dramatically during the past ten years. More and more programs have developed to fit the needs of your children’s likes and dislikes. With all of the changes, the process of picking the right program for your child has changed as well. It used to be that families found one program for their oldest child and the others followed. Now, families are not averse to picking different programs based on each child. Of course, this can bring some complications when it comes to coordinating all of the different activities, but in the end, it’s about finding the right program for each child. Things to consider when picking a Summer Camp: 1. Decide what type of program you are looking for: Day Camp, Resident Camp or Travel Camp. Additionally, you will want to decide if you want your child at a Co-ed or Single gender program. 2. Decide the type and location of the program. Ask yourself what kind 10 April 2012 | PB Parenting |
of program you are looking for and how far or close you would like to send your child. Programs can range from traditional summer camps with a wide variety of activities to programs that specialize in specific activities ranging from sports to the arts. Additionally, there are travel programs that will allow your children to travel throughout the U.S. and other parts of the world. These programs can range from touring itineraries to community service. 3. Once you narrow down the above, you will need to decide how long you would like your child to be away; Camps range in length of stay from a few days to eight weeks. 4. All of the above will also factor into the cost of camp: Camps can range from a few hundred dollars for a week to thousands per week. Many camps offer scholarship programs to assist with the cost. Photos provided by Camp Cobbossee for Boys
SOL CHILDREN THEATRE TROUPE
The above are just some of the highlights in picking the right camp. It’s important that you do your research and ask around. There is nothing like a personal referral when picking a camp. Talk to the director of the camp and don’t be afraid to ask questions. You may even have the opportunity to meet them at an information session or even have them visit you and your children at your home. At the end of the day, you want to find a camp that you are comfortable with as well as your children. Not every camp is for every child, but with the thousands of choices, you can find one that fits.

The summer camp experience is more than just something to do in the summer. It’s about being away and meeting friends. Camp provides children with the first challenges of what it will be like when they get older and their parents aren’t right next to them. The summer camp experience is something that they will remember the rest of the lives and there will not be a day that goes by where they don’t think CAMP! Resources: http://find.acacamps.org – This is a great search tool created by the American Camp Association(ACA) to find camps based on your specific needs. All camps listed are ACA accredited.

Q&A
Frequently Asked Questions Bullying & Being Teased
Q. My son’s only seven but he’s been coming
2. Teach a bullyDr. Michele Borba proofing strategy. Parenting Expert What may work with one child may not with another, so it’s best to discuss a range of options and then choose the one or two your child feels most comfortable with.
A. Some of the toughest problems parents
• Assert yourself. Teach your child to face the bully by standing tall and using a strong voice. Your child should name the bullying behavior and tell the aggressor to stop: “That’s teasing. Stop it,.” or “Stop making fun of me. It’s mean.”
home upset every day. He says a boy named Mark keeps teasing him. Now the rest of the kids won’t play with him because they are afraid Mark will start picking on them too. He’s miserable and doesn’t want to go to school. What can I do to help him?
must deal with happen right on the school playground where teasing, bullying and mean-spirited kids abound. There seems to be an epidemic of mean-acting kids these days. In fact, the National Education Association estimates that 160,000 children skip school every day because they fear being attacked or intimidated by other students. While we can’t prevent the pain insults can cause, we can lessen our kids’ chances of becoming victims. The best thing to do is teach our kids how to deal with their tormentors. Doing so will show them there are ways to resolve conflicts without losing face or resorting to violence and will boost their confidence. So the next time your child is upset from teasing, here are a few ideas I suggest you do:
1. Listen and gather facts. The first step is often the hardest for parents: listen to your child’s whole story without interrupting. Your goal is to try to figure out what happened, who was involved, where and when the teasing took place and why your child was teased. If your child appears to be in no immediate danger, keep listening to find out how she reacts to the bullying. By knowing what reaction didn’t stop the bully, you can offer your child a more effective option.

• Question the response. Ann Bishop, who teaches violence prevention curriculums, tells her students to respond to an insult with a non-defensive question: “Why would you say that?” or “Why would you want to tell me I am dumb (or fat) and hurt my feelings?” • Use “I want.” Communication experts suggest teaching your child to address the bully beginning with “I want” and say firmly what he wants changed: “I want you to leave me alone,” or “I want you to stop teasing me.” • Ignore it. Bullies love it when their teasing upsets their victims, so help your child find a way to not let his tormentor get to him. A group of fifth graders told me ways they ignore their teasers: Pretend they’re invisible; walk away without looking at them; quickly look at something else and laugh; and look completely uninterested. • Make Fun of the Teasing. Fred Frankel, author of Good Friends Are Hard to Find suggests victims answer every tease with a reply, but not tease back. The teasing often stops, Frankel says, because the child lets
the tormentor know he’s not going to let the teasing get to him (even if it does). 3. Rehearse the strategy with your child. Once you choose a technique, rehearse it together so your child is comfortable trying it. The trick is for your child to deliver it assuredly to the bully and that takes practice. Explain that though he has the right to feel angry, it’s not okay to let it get out of control. Besides, anger just fuels the bully. Try teaching your child the CALM approach to defueling the tormentor. •

C - Cool down. When you confront the bully, stay calm and always in control. Don’t let him think he’s getting to you. If you need to calm down, count to twenty slowly inside your head or say to yourself, “Chill out!” And most importantly: tell your child to always get help whenever there is a chance she might be injured. A - Assert yourself. Try the strategy with the bully just like you practiced. L - Look at the teaser straight in the eye. Appear confident, hold your head high and stand tall. M - Mean it! Use a firm, strong voice. Say what you feel, but don’t be insulting, threaten or tease back.
Like it or not, most kids are bound to encounter children who are deliberately mean. By teaching kids effective ways to respond to verbal abuse, we can reduce their chances of being victims as well as helping them learn how to cope more successfully with future adversities.
