Returning to Work After Having a Baby BY JULIE CHRISTENSEN The first few weeks after a baby is born fly by in a blur and before you know it, it’s time to return to work from maternity leave. You might feel excited to return to a rewarding job. You might wonder how you’re going to manage it all. You might feel pain at the thought of leaving your baby. Or you might feel all these emotions. Nothing will completely eliminate the challenges of returning to work after having a baby. This first step is just one of many transitions you will make throughout life with your child. Below are some tried and true tricks from veteran parents that can cut down on the back-to-work blues. Tips for Returning from Maternity Leave: Streamline your schedule. In your previous life, you may have had your routine down pat, with plenty of time for going to the gym, reading the paper, or lingering over a cup of coffee before work. Chances are, your mornings will feel more rushed now. Do everything you can to simplify your morning routine, leaving plenty of time to feed and play with your baby and have a few minutes to yourself. Lay out your clothes the night before. Pack the diaper bag and prep breakfast and coffee before you go to bed. Build at least 15 minutes into your schedule for the inevitable last-minute diaper change or feeding. Practice this schedule 8 April 2015 | PB Parenting |
even before you return to work so you feel confident and prepared. Find child care well ahead of time. Start interviewing caregivers or programs several weeks before you return to work, or even before your baby is born. You’ll have more choices if you plan early. Finding a caregiver or child care program that you feel comfortable with is one of the most important aspects of returning to work. When you know your baby is in good hands, most of the other worries tend to slip away. Make sleep a priority. One of the most challenging aspects of new parenthood is the lack of sleep, which quickly exacerbates feelings of anxiety or frustration. You might have been a night owl in the past, but for your health and sanity, adopt an early bedtime for a while. You’ll be happier and more productive, both at home and at work if you get as much rest as possible. Stay connected. It’s easy to lose track of friends in the first few months after your baby arrives. Make a point, though, to reach out to friends and family occasionally. Build friendships with other new parents. These relationships will become a lifeline of support. Expect ambivalent emotions. For many new parents, having a baby (especially the first) can mean a transformation in terms

Give yourself a break if returning to work seems more difficult than you expected. The first year of infancy is a time of tremendous change for parents, whether you return to work outside the home or not. You’re learning so many new skills while simultaneously juggling all your old responsibilities. Add in the fog of sleep deprivation and you’re bound to have some crazy days. Remember that the sweet, joyful, but challenging, phase of early infancy is

of your goals, values, and lifestyle. What mattered in your life before may or may not reflect how you feel now. As you prepare to go back to work after maternity leave, expect to have some feelings of discord. Guilt is an almost universal feeling during early parenthood. You feel guilty about leaving your baby with a caregiver. You feel guilty about enjoying your time at the office. Accept that you will probably feel a mix of emotions about returning to work. Give yourself time to process these feelings.

BABY TEETH Early Infant Oral Care Perinatal & Infant Oral Health BY DR. ROBERT M. NEWMAN
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that all pregnant women receive oral healthcare and counseling during pregnancy. Research has shown evidence that periodontal disease can increase the risk of preterm birth and low birth weight. Talk to your doctor or dentist about ways you can prevent periodontal disease during pregnancy. Additionally, mothers with poor oral health may be at a greater risk of passing the bacteria which causes cavities to their young children. Mother's should follow these simple steps to decrease the risk of spreading cavity-causing bacteria: • • • •
• •
Visit your dentist regularly. Brush and floss on a daily basis to reduce bacterial plaque. Proper diet, with the reduction of beverages and foods high in sugar & starch. Use a fluoridated toothpaste recommended by the ADA and rinse every night with an alocohol-free, over-the-counter mouth rinse with .05 % sodium fluoride in order to reduce plaque levels. Don't share utensils, cups or food which can cause the transmission of cavitycausing bacteria to your children. Use of xylitol chewing gum (4 pieces per day by the mother) can decrease a child's caries rate.

Your Child's First Dental Visit-Establishing A "Dental Home" The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Dental Association (ADA), and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) all recommend establishing a "Dental Home" for your child by one year of age. Children who have a dental home are more likely to receive appropriate preventive and routine oral health care. The Dental Home is intended to provide a place other than the Emergency Room for parents. You can make the first visit to the dentist enjoyable and positive. If old enough, your child should be informed of the visit and told that the dentist and their staff will explain all procedures and answer any questions. The less to-do concerning the visit, the better. It is best if you refrain from using words around your child that might cause unnecessary fear, such as needle, pull, drill or hurt. Pediatric dental offices make a practice of using words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and nonfrightening to the child. When Will My Baby Start Getting Teeth? Teething, the process of baby (primary) teeth coming through the gums into the mouth, is variable among individual babies. Some babies get their teeth early and some
get them late. In general, the first baby teeth to appear are usually the lower front (anterior) teeth and they usually begin erupting between the age of 6-8 months. See Primary Teeth Development Chart on page 16 for more details. Baby Bottle Tooth Decay (Early Childhood Caries) One serious form of decay among young children is baby bottle tooth decay. This condition is caused by frequent and long exposures of an infant's teeth to liquids that contain sugar. Among these liquids are milk (including breast milk), formula, fruit juice and other sweetened drinks. Putting a baby to bed for a nap or at night with a bottle other than water can cause serious and rapid tooth decay. Sweet liquid pools around the child's teeth giving plaque bacteria an opportunity to produce acids that attack tooth enamel. If you must give the baby a bottle as a comforter at bedtime, it should contain only water. If your child won't fall asleep without the bottle and its usual beverage, gradually dilute the bottle's contents with water over a period of two to three weeks. After each feeding, wipe the baby's gums and teeth with a damp washcloth or gauze pad to remove plaque. The easiest way to do this is to sit down, place the child's head in your lap or lay the child on a dressing table or the floor. Whatever position you use, be sure you can see into the child's mouth easily. Sippy Cups Sippy cups should be used as a training tool from the bottle to a cup and should be discontinued by the first birthday. If your child uses a sippy cup throughout the day, fill the sippy cup with water only (except at mealtimes). By filling the sippy cup with liquids that contain sugar (including milk, fruit juice, sports drinks, etc.) and allowing a child to drink from it throughout the day, it

Tooth Development soaks the child's teeth in cavity causing. Prevention Care Of Your Child's Teeth Good Diet = Healthy Teeth Healthy eating habits lead to healthy teeth. Like the rest of the body, the teeth, bones and the soft tissues of the mouth need a well-balanced diet. Children should eat a variety of foods from the five major food groups. Most snacks that children eat can lead to cavity formation. The more frequently a child snacks, the greater the chance for tooth decay. How long food remains in the mouth also plays a role. For example, hard candy and breath mints stay in the mouth a long time, which cause longer acid attacks on tooth enamel. If your child must snack, choose nutritious foods such as vegetables, low-fat yogurt, and low-fat cheese, which are healthier and better for children's teeth.

3 Ways to Pay for the Cost of Having Kids BY RACHEL CRUZE
Having kids is an amazing, unforgettable
be sure to include a “miscellaneous” category for stuff like unexpected birthday parties and school trips. It might take you few months to get your budget right, but once you do, you’ll have a great foundation in place.
When they’re little, you’ve got the diapers, the formula, the clothes they never stop growing out of and the endless amounts of food. Then they get a little older and there’s daycare and more clothes and toys.
Next, let’s start saving. I want you to put a $1,000 emergency fund in place. This is just a small savings account you can quickly access when “life happens”—like when your sixth grader loses a couple of teeth or when your teenager’s car blows out a tire. Later on, once you’re out of debt, you can focus on building a larger emergency fund consisting of three to six months of expenses.
experience, but it isn’t cheap. Everyone told you kids would be expensive, but you never quite understood what that meant until you had your own.
Then there are sports teams, summer camp, extracurricular activities and college tuition. And have you heard that college tuition is expensive? You want to provide the best for your kids, but it’s hard to do that when you’re stressed out by money. So how do you cut back on these costs while making the most of the time you have with your kids? Start with a budget. That’s your plan. That’s how you tell your money where to go instead of wondering where it went. Put the diapers, the wipes, the sports uniforms and all the food in the budget. That’s everything. Use a spread sheet, a pencil and paper, or an online tool and put down all your expenses. Your income minus your outgoing should equal zero—it’s called a zero-based budget. If you still don’t have enough, then you’ll need to pull some money from another category, like cable or entertainment. And

Notice I didn’t mention credit cards. Why? Because credit cards should never be your emergency plan! Don’t make a tough situation worse by going into debt! Once you have that in place, then I want you to focus on debt. Your biggest wealthbuilding tool is your income. And when all your hard-earned money has the bank’s name on it, then it’s hard to make any progress paying off debt. Use the debt snowball—pay the minimum on all your debts except the smallest, and pay as much extra as you can on it. Once you have the smallest debt paid off, then move on to the next smallest. Continue until you’re completely out of debt! The more debt you pay off, the more money
you have to spend. That means you can afford more of that “fun stuff’ your kids want, and you’re more equipped to deal with any emergencies that come your way. Please don’t spend money you don’t have to keep up images. Remember, the Jones’ are probably broke, no matter what their life looks like on social media. I want you to make a great life for your kids, and the best way to do that is to budget, save and get out of debt. Once you make those decisions, you’ll be amazed how in control and confident you feel about your finances. Rachel Cruze helps Americans learn the proper ways to handle money and stay out of debt. Her new book Smart Money Smart Kids, co-authored with her dad Dave Ramsey, released April 2014 and debuted at #1 on the New York Times best-sellers list. Community cares 10th Annual Uncle Gary’s Rock and Rib Fest benefiting Kids Cancer Foundation Uncle Gary’s Rock and Rib Fest started with humble beginnings 10 years ago. It started as a family get together with only 32 people and he grilled ribs on his porch. This year it is moving from last year’s location (John Prince Park) to an even bigger location to accommodate more guests at the American German Club in Lantana. This annual Rib Fest started because in 2002, “Uncle Gary” Rowan, lost his only daughter, Ashley to a rare liver cancer. A couple of years later, he started a BBQ event in her honor. After realizing the outreach he had received from friends and family alike, Uncle Gary decided it was time to grow the event, and dedicate his event proceeds to “Kids Cancer Foundation” in Royal Palm Beach. Uncle Gary’s Rock and Rib Fest now includes great live music, bounce houses, kid’s Fun-zone, grab bags, raffles, face painting, playgrounds and so much more! The “Kids Cancer Foundation” was Founded by Michelle O’Boyle RN, CPON, and is
located in Royal Palm Beach FL, providing support services to over 100+ children with cancer. Visit their website at: http://www. kidscancersf.org. Every year, Gary challenges himself to double what he donated the previous year. Last year, he donated $10,000 to the Kids Cancer Foundation. This year he wants to donate $20,000. New additions that were added for this year include a live feed of the bands playing, more food choices including vegan, and more children’s activities. Also new for this year, Uncle Gary and his niece will also be introducing Ashley for the first time via a digital presentation and poem. Don’t miss this fun for the whole family event on Saturday April 11th at The American German Club. Admission $8 - Kids 10 & under are free. Hours: 10am - 9pm 5111 Lantana Rd Lake Worth. For more info go to www.unclegarysrockandribfest.com.

Save Money and the Environment with These Homemade Green Cleaners BY TIFFANY DOERR GUERZON
Household cleaning products can be expensive, and many aren’t friendly to the environment. Commercial cleansers, especially those used in the kitchen or bathroom, can also produce irritating fumes. So if you would like to conquer your grimy kitchen and bathroom—without the need for a HazMat suit or a gas mask—read on! Most household cleaning and disinfecting can be accomplished using two main ingredients: baking soda and white vinegar. Add liquid dish soap and you have a full arsenal. Baking soda makes a great scouring powder, plus it neutralizes odors and kills mold and mildew. Acetic acid, the active ingredient in vinegar, acts as a disinfectant and also inhibits mold. Liquid dish soap helps to cut through grease and soap scum. So arm yourself with baking soda, vinegar, and liquid dish soap, grab some rags and a scrub brush, and declare war on the germs, soap scum, mold and mildew in your bathroom and kitchen. IN THE KITCHEN: Surfaces: For general surface cleaning, fill a spray bottle with half white vinegar and half water. Spray on and wipe clean. Always test on a small area of any surface before use, as you would with any cleaning product. Do

not use vinegar on marble, as the acid can etch it, and use with caution on finished wood surfaces and tile. Sink: For the sink, baking soda makes a great scouring powder. Simply sprinkle onto the damp sink basin, let sit for a few minutes, then scrub with a wet rag or sponge. Then, to clean and deodorize the drain, try this simple solution. Pour one cup baking soda and one cup white vinegar into the drain. Let this mixture sit for fifteen minutes. The bubbling and hissing sound you will hear is the acidic vinegar reacting with the baking soda, which is a base. The two products together can help loosen grease and clogs. Follow this by pouring a kettle full of boiling water down the drain. Then finish up by shining the faucet with a spritz of your vinegar and water solution. Microwave: To loosen cooked-on food residue in the microwave, put one-half cup of white vinegar and one-half cup of water in a microwave-safe bowl. Place the bowl in the microwave and heat the solution until it boils. Once everything has cooled, remove the bowl and wipe down the interior with a cleaning rag dipped in the contents of the bowl. Oven: To clean the oven, spray water on any
dirty surfaces, and then sprinkle with baking soda liberally. Spray in some water again to wet the baking soda. Let it sit overnight, and then scrub the oven with a wet rag.

Shower heads: To loosen deposits on shower heads, fill a small plastic bag with one half cup baking soda and one half cup vinegar. Use a rubber band to attach the solutionfilled bag to the shower head, so that the nozzle is immersed. 36 Hours in Asheville BY FELONICE MERRIMAN
The cool crisp mountain air was a refreshing change from the humidity of South Florida. The road trip was not too bad to Asheville, North Carolina. It took about 12 hours to drive with stops along the way. Asheville is a great city that can be enjoyed either as a couple or with children. This trip we found ourselves without the kids in tow so we decided to explore the adult options Asheville has to offer. But being a mom, in my head, I was always thinking about what my children would like. It is also very pet friendly! There was no shortage of 4 legged friends. If you or your significant other are into breweries, there is plenty to see here. Asheville has been named Beer City twice! There are some great craft beer breweries within blocks of each other in downtown. There are also a few ciderworks in the surrounding area like Black Mountain Ciderworks and Urban Ciderworks. It would take a few trips to see them all. Even if you are visiting with children, you can still sample what Beer City has to offer. There are some family friendly options like Asheville Brewing - they have a full service restaurant with great pizza (even gluten-

free) and calzones. You could enjoy a flight of their handcrafted brews at lunch or dinner. Burial Brewery also has a family friendly Jazz Brunch on Sundays starting at noon with Cajun inspired food, jazz music and a sideyard full of happy kids running around playing. The food in Asheville was also amazing. I have some food sensitivities and most restaurants were happy and able to accommodate. My favorite was Posana, in downtown Asheville. The entire restaurant is gluten-free. The food was fabulous. We went there for brunch and ended up coming back for dinner. It was that good! Both were two different experiences that were equally impressive. I was happy that I could order anything on the menu and have a complete meal from start to finish. Even if you aren’t gluten-free, the food is high quality and worth a stop. Make reservations though, it fills up! The next stop on our trip was the amazing Biltmore estate. I thought we were just going to a large estate, I was surprised at the size of the entire property. Biltmore’s first-time visitors often realize that once they arrive there’s more to see and do than they
expected. Wowing guests for more than 100 years, Biltmore offers a full menu of activities to keep guests intrigued as they discover Vanderbilt’s 8,000-acre mountain estate. A visit to Biltmore includes access to the 250-room Biltmore House; 80-plus acres of formal gardens; Antler Hill Village and Farm; and the estate’s award-winning Winery. Exploring each part can take a full day – or even more. We spent most of the day here and even had a great lunch in the Stable Café. It’s a must–see transformation of a 19th–century stable into an inviting café where guests dine in renovated horse stalls. Maggie, our waitress, was the epitome of southern charm. She recommended the bison burger and I sampled some Carolina BBQ that the state is so well known for. We left with full bellies ready to explore the Biltmore House. The Biltmore House visit is a self-guided tour through three floors and the basement of America’s largest home. Every room on the tour has been carefully conserved by Biltmore’s Museum Services staff. Displays of the Vanderbilts’ original artwork collection and furniture beautifully
illustrate life at Biltmore as it was during the time when George and Edith Vanderbilt lived in the home with their only child, daughter Cornelia. Many of the rooms offer panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Beyond the House, acres of formal gardens beckon, reminiscent of the very same types first grown in the garden during Vanderbilt’s day. The soaring glass conservatory is a showcase filled with tropical palms, ferns and orchids. Beyond the formal gardens are more than 20 miles of hiking and walking paths. After walking around the estate and gardens head over for some family fun at Antler Hill Village & Winery. There you will find historical exhibits at The Biltmore Legacy, live seasonal entertainment at the Village Green, a playground, as well as exhibits and animals at the Farm. At the Winery, enjoy complimentary samples of Biltmore’s award-winning wines and tours of the facility, once home to the original Biltmore Dairy.
