Letter From The Publisher

Greetings, Growing up I remember getting so excited when stores started putting out the Back to School merchandise. I couldn’t wait to go pick out a new backpack and clothes. Now it seems stores are putting out school supplies earlier and earlier. I would spend a lot of time carefully picking out my outfit for the first day and laying it out the night before. Excited, I would go to bed with butterflies in my stomach. My mom always took pictures of me and my sisters and now years later, I love taking pictures of my daughter’s first day and seeing all of my friends’ post their kids in backpacks and new clothes heading off to school. We love “first day” pics so be sure to send your back to school photos to pbpics@pbparenting.com. They could appear in next month’s issue of PB Pics! Our August issue is packed with great ideas for the upcoming school year such as tips for hassle free mornings (pg. 8), staying healthy during the school year (pg.16), after school enrichments (pg. 33) and more. We also have a School Spotlight highlighting terrific schools in the area (pg 22). But don’t worry Summer, we aren’t saying goodbye just yet! We want to enjoy the last few weeks while they last. Check out page 28 to see our summer pictures and all the fun we have been having in Palm Beach County and you’ll find Summer Safety Tips on page 12. In between issues please be sure to stop by and join our 2,000 facebook fans as we keep you updated on the latest happenings in Palm Beach County. Also don’t miss our weekly e-newsletter (every Friday morning) filled with the latest happenings all over Palm Beach. Enjoy the rest of the summer and the upcoming school year!

Hassle Free Mornings

7 Habits to Make Mornings Easy on the Whole Family BY SARA KENDALL Just about any morning for a family with school-age children can be a tricky balancing act, but especially weekday mornings. Scrambling to find homework, rushing to make breakfast and solving fashion disasters as the clock ticks can add a lot of unnecessary stress. Chaotic mornings can result in tempers flaring and being late for school or work. Sound familiar? It doesn’t have to. Bring peace and harmony back to your mornings with a little prep the night before and a new morning routine. Follow these 7 simple habits for a better, calmer morning. In The Evening 1. Check the school’s activity calendar for each of your children, review your work schedule and don’t forget the weather report. If its library day tomorrow, have your child find the book tonight to avoid a last minute scramble as you’re heading out the door. Your big project presentation is tomorrow. Get everything ready, so you can breathe easier in the morning. The forecast is calling for possible rain. Prepare by laying out rain gear for the whole family. 2. Most school systems have lunch menus available online. Look up what’s on the school lunch menu. Find out who wants to buy and who wants to take their lunch. You may not be able to make their lunch the night before, but you can fill up their drink bottles, get their 8 August 2013 | PB Parenting |

lunch boxes out and decide on snacks, saving precious time the next morning and setting you up for a quick lunch-making process. 3. Get your children into the habit of packing their backpacks the night before. For younger children, do a double check for homework, schoolbooks, permission slips and school papers. The packed lunch boxes, drink bottles, and snacks can be added in the morning. If there is no lunch to add, consider putting their backpacks in the car, so they are ready to go. 4. In the kitchen, select what’s on the breakfast menu. Place all the non-perishable breakfast food items like cereal, granola bars and bagels on the counter. Line up bowls, plates and the necessary utensils. With all the choices sitting on the countertop, your older children can easily see what is available, and it will prompt them to make their own breakfast. 5. Since you have checked the weather report, wardrobe decisions can be made by your children. Inform your children about the next day’s weather, so they can make their choices and lay out what they want to wear on their dresser. Clothing choices are a way a child can showcase their individual style, so this could lead to multiple outfit changes. Making this important decision at night will save precious morning minutes.

6. Pad your morning time by adjusting bedtimes and alarm clocks by ten minutes. Go to bed ten minutes earlier, so everyone can get up ten minutes earlier. These ten crucial minutes gives you the extra cushion if an unexpected delay occurs such as burnt toast or missing car keys. In the Morning 7. Restrict the television, computer and video games in the morning. Kids tend to zone out in front of the television or get totally engrossed in winning a game on an electronic device. Play relaxing music instead so everyone has a calmer state of mind to start their day. Successful mornings set the tone for the day. Begin incorporating these 7 new habits. Adjust to suit your family’s style and watch your mornings turn into smooth beginnings.

Community Cares SOS Children’s Village gives hope & healing to foster children In the heart of Coconut Creek lays a neighborhood unlike any other. The tree-lined street and family homes may look typical, but the families inside are anything but. SOS Children’s Village is more than a foster home, it’s a neighborhood that brings together families and friends to fulfill a promise of healing, hope and home to South Florida’s foster children. On any given day there is an average of 75 boys and girls between the ages of 2 and 18 living in the Village. Each child has been removed from their home and family because of abuse, abandonment and neglect. Each are longing for home and family. And that’s what SOS is all about. The Village was built on the dream of creating a stable home and restoring family bonds between siblings. The realization of that dream is so very evident today. Wanda, the first SOS child, grew up with her three sisters at the Village. And, today, she attributes her ability to love and care for her own children because of the care and support she experienced at SOS. More than 400 children have passed through the doors of an SOS home over the past two decades. The first generation of Village kids are grown and building their own lives.

Health & Wellness Summer Safety Tips There are a few weeks left of summer before school arrives, enjoy them! Before you head to the pool or get ready for a picnic, check out these safety tips so your fun-filled day doesn’t end with a trip to the emergency room. 1. Keep your cool and drink lots of water to avoid heat-related illness. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Heat cramps, often caused by dehydration, can progress to heat exhaustion and potentially fatal heat stroke. To protect yourself against the heat, stay indoors as much as possible, wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothes; and avoid strenuous work during extreme heat. 2. Be water wise and teach your children to swim. At the pool, swim under lifeguard supervision. At the beach, swim only in designated areas. Don’t dive into shallow water and risk neck injuries or paralysis. If you get caught in an ocean current, swim parallel to shore and wait for the current to lessen. 3. Bake a cake — not your skin. Try to limit sun exposure during peak times and apply sunscreen at least 20 to 30 minutes before you hit the beach or pool and reapply every two hours. If you do have a sunburn, try taking a cool bath or shower, applying aloe gel or other soothing lotion, or taking aspirin or ibuprofen to reduce inflammation. Severe reactions, which can include fever, chills, nausea or rash, may require medical attention. 4. Have fun throwing the ball, not throwing out your back or shoulder. Before you start

12 August 2013 | PB Parenting |

exercising, check with your doctor, then make sure you have the right equipment, including properly fitting shoes. Start slowly to avoid overuse injuries such as tendonitis and be sure to drink lots of water. Don’t forget warm-up and stretching exercises. 5. Pass the salad please — but hold the salmonella, shigella and E. coli. Food poisoning can ruin a good time, so watch what you eat. Cook meat, poultry, fish and shellfish thoroughly and make sure prepared salads (such as egg, tuna, potato or chicken) are not left out at room temperature for more than two hours. Don’t eat raw oysters or undercooked mussels, clams or other seafood. Wash fruits and vegetables carefully. Avoid eating raw or undercooked eggs. Common signs and symptoms of food poisoning include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and fever. Enjoy a juicy slice of watermelon, dive into a cool pool and build your best sandcastle. You can’t remove all the risks, but by putting safety first and following a few simple steps, you can enjoy your summer and make lots of happy memories. If an accident does happen, the emergency rooms at West Boca Medical Center are available 24-hours a day to get you and your family back on track. Visit WestBocaMedCtr.com to skip the ER waiting room and check in online. If you have a non-life threatening medical emergency, simply hold your place online and wait in the comfort of your own home. 1. Act quickly: As soon as you feel the tingle of a burn or see pinkness - take action. It can take 4-6 hours before the burn is fully apparent. Get out of the sun and start cool compresses. 2. Assess the damage: Most sunburns, even those that cause a few blisters, can be treated at home. But if a blistering burn covers 20% or more of the body seek medical attention. Anyone suffering fevers and chills should also seek medical help. 3. Treat your skin: After a cool bath or shower slather on the body lotion. Apply generously and repeat often. For severe burn with itching, pain, or swelling use over the counter hydrocortisone cream. Do not scratch your burn. 4. Don’t wait to medicate: Take over the counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB) or aspirin and antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) as soon as possible. It cuts back on the swelling and redness and might prevent some long-term skin damage. Take the sunburn as a warning that your sun-safety net has failed and vow to do better. That means using sunscreen, covering up with clothing and hats and avoiding the sun as much as possible between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Source: Cosmetics Design Source: FDA Source: SkinCaner.org

A Happy & Healthy School Year

Health & Wellness

BY MONICA V. FLOREZ, MD As a mother and a doctor I look to the start of school with both happiness and dread. My children will be returning to routine but they will also be returning to the place that often increases their risk of illness. In order to maintain them as healthy as they have been throughout the summer ,there a number of things that parents can do to boost a child’s immune system and prevent the spread of disease. The first step in a healthy immune system is a healthy body, which is maintained by healthy diet and plenty of sleep. Children need between 10-12 hours of sleep at night, even on weekends!! Elementary age children should be going to bed between 730-830 pm, middle school and high school children should try to get to bed between 9 - 930 at night. Parents and children should institute a cool down period about 30-40 minutes prior to bed and a nightly routine to start to wind down. For example: turn off ALL electronic including TV and cell phones (parents charge those cell phones in the kitchen to avoid late night calls and texts and use an old fashioned alarm clock if needed), put away school books and get clothing ready for the next day, grab a healthy snack, brush teeth and read quietly for 20-30 minutes. A healthy diet always starts with breakfast; skip the cereal and do protein instead. Egg is an excellent source of protein. Other sources of protein include yogurt

16 August 2013 | PB Parenting |

and almond or peanut butter for variety. Take advantage of snack time. Since they are hungry and everyone else is eating they will be more likely to eat healthy foods during snack time - so send fruits and vegetables instead of chips and cookies. Try to get 5-7 serving of fruits and vegetables in a day - one with each meal and each snack . Everyone knows that washing hands is important and the first step in keep bacteria and viruses from entering our system, but once washed children IMMEDIATELY touch potentially infected surfaces and then place their fingers inside their mouths!! So all the hand washing in the world will not work unless we teach them to keep fingers and nails outside of the mouth. To a child, the word bacteria and virus means nothing -- they have never seen one in a zoo they do not know what that word represents. So in my office I will often show elementary age child pictures of bacteria and viruses and let them know those are the germs that they touch and pick up and then eat when they put their fingers in their mouths. These little germ critters are also found on drinking fountains, so prepare your child with a thermos full of ice cold water. Skip the juice and send water instead - many teachers will allow children to sip from thermoses of water throughout the day as long as the container is leak resistant, so invest in a good stainless steel thermos.

If you are already feeding your children a healthy diet, they get plenty of sleep and have good hand hygiene, but they still get sick, there must be something else. A multivitamin with omega3 supplementation found in health food stores is a great addition, since it rounds out any nutritional deficits and adds an immune boost with the omega3. Which brand you ask? That unfortunately is trial and error - the best brand is the one that packs the most punch AND tastes good enough to eat.

Fighting Summer Frizz! BY COURTNEY PORTNOF Summer fun can quickly turn into summer frizz! If you are looking to tame your mane this summer, get excited as PB Parenting introduces you to Tricho Hair Salon at Wellington Green. Head Stylist and Owner Damiano Guardino and his fabulous team are very familiar with the negative impact heat has on hair. Damiano, formerly of Pyure Aveda, recently opened his New York Style salon, incorporating his years of experience. Appearing on various media outlets including the Oprah Winfrey Show, Damiano has traveled the world teaching stylists his methods and practices. Together with his team of stylists, they are ready to tackle your frizzy hair. Damiano explained that, “The hair expands and contracts in humidity, therefore making the hair take in moisture through humidity and allowing it to become frizzy. You can protect your hair from humidity with one of our luxurious treatments and incorporate any of the products we carry.” Forget “beating the heat”, summer is about fighting the frizz! Tricho offers treatments to fit every budget. One treatment exclusively available at Tricho is Fusio Dose by Kerastase ($25). This treats the hair from humidity, as well as offers UV and color protectant. Damiano explained how Fusio works; it is an “overdose of nutrients which hair typically loses over time.” Without breaking the bank, this treatment will coat your hair, preventing it from expanding and contracting which means less frizz. Tricho offers another frizz combatting

solution; a Keratin treatment. Concerned about Alfaparf Ke the chemicals ratin Treatm ent in Keratin? Rest assured, Damiano tells us that Tricho Salon is the only salon in Wellington to carry a non-formaldehyde Keratin that lasts 3 months! Common Keratin Misconceptions: • All Keratin contains formaldehyde Tricho’s brand does not! • Keratin is a straightener - It is actually a smoothing treatment Damiano brought an exclusive Italian brand, the Alfaparf Keratin Treatment, into Tricho ($200). He explained why it is different than other Keratin, “Guidelines within the European Union have banned and forbidden formaldehyde treatments. However, they are not banned in the United States. Alfaparf Keratin Treatment is the only universal non-formaldehyde product that works. Unfortunately, there is virtually no press on the product because it is safe”. Busy moms don’t have time to blow out their hair and flat iron which can be damaging. The Alfaparf Keratin Treatment is the answer to frizzy unruly hair during these summer months. To book a luxurious service call Tricho Hair Salon at Wellington Green 561-7530052. 10300 W. Forest Hill Boulevard in Wellington, Florida. With Damiano Guardino and the Tricho Team, leave your worries at home and bring your hair to the experts!

Mommy Makeover

BY FELONICE MARGASAK

So I turned to Damiano Guardino of Tricho Salon in the Wellington Green Mall. We are excited to announce PB Parenting has partnered with Tricho to help make-over the moms of Palm Beach County, one reader at a time! But first I needed to take a test drive in Dam’s seat! Dam listened attentively to what I needed (“a quick mom haircut that is literally wash and go”) and he delivered. Weeks later I am still loving the cut and how easy my hair is to manage.

Would you like to be our next Mommy Makeover? Head over to PB Parenting’s facebook page. Click on our Mommy Makeover tab and submit your “before” picture. As a mom of two, I am always trying to juggle too many things at once. Most days I am lucky to brush my teeth let alone fix my hair. In between haircuts, 6 weeks turns into 8 weeks which turns into 12 weeks. Recently I looked in the mirror and realized my hair needed help...and fast!

The Best Form of Play is… Being in a Play! BY KARA BACHMAN There is a reason that theatrical productions are referred to as “plays.” Surely, it is because in addition to being hard work, theater can also be a great form of play. Even one small moment in the limelight can serve to permanently fire the imagination and creative spirit of a child. Although many kids in Palm Beach County prefer to spend their time in organized sports, there are many others who have never been able to grab onto sports as a pastime they can enjoy and excel at. If your child “doesn’t get into” sports, you may want to consider introducing them to another form of play: theater. We all remember playing dress-up as children. We recall how much fun it was to pretend to be a princess, or a cowboy, or an alien from outer space. Participating in organized theater activities captures this playful element. What’s more, with every successive performance, our children are not only “playing,” but are perfecting a craft that may lead to a lifetime of enjoyment. Just as sports can teach kids how to follow directions, how to work as a “team” and how to perfect a skill set, so too, can drama. Even more important,

30 August 2013 | PB Parenting |

when a child receives the cheers and applause of an audience, it is every bit as satisfying as the cheers of spectators at a ballgame. According to James Catterall, UCLA Professor, participation in drama aids in educational and social success. His book, Doing Well and Doing Good by Doing Art: The Effects of Education in the Visual and Performing Arts on the Achievements and Values of Young Adults (2009), shares the results of studies that trace how involvement in performing and visual art influences children. He says in the book: “Our analyses found substantial and significant differences in achievement and in important attitudes and behaviors between youth highly involved in the arts and those with little or no arts engagement.” His study, which was a focal point of the book, showed that kids involved in theater, band, orchestra, chorus, dance, and other artistic pursuits had higher school achievement, lower rates of dropping out of school, and “better attitudes about school and community.” If this is true, then theater is definitely play with a purpose! Theater is a year-round activity that

can involve the entire family, from the oldest member to the very youngest. Many theaters and playhouses provide opportunities for youngsters to get involved. For those who are outgoing, taking a role onstage may be a possibility. When starting out, a child with little experience will need to begin with roles as an ‘extra’ or with small bit parts until they build up enough maturity and acting chops to carry a more serious role. But with time, your child could develop dramatic skills that will delight audiences. Perhaps your child is shy about being in the spotlight and would prefer to help behind-the-scenes by getting stage sets and props ready, helping with costumes, or assisting those who work in sound and lights. There really is an option for every personality and age. Community theater is a great activity for families, as it is something they can enjoy together for many, many years.

Many children begin their involvement in plays by enrolling in a summer or afterschool camp. Others choose to participate, beginning at the middleschool level, in drama classes or musical productions staged at school. By participating in school plays and theater camps, your child can become familiar with the rudiments of a stage show; this can help him/her transition more easily to involvement with community theater. Pick up the phone and call a local theater and ask about how you can become involved. Just as “soccer moms” love to see their kids kick an impossible goal, you will enjoy seeing your “superstar” on a stage, delivering a line perfectly or posing as the perfect princess, clown, superhero, or dainty yellow flower. Kara Bachman is mom to two kids, aged 10 and 13, who love performing in children’s plays and at open mic nights. An “indoors” person, Kara is glad that rehearsal is always in an air-conditioned theater instead of on a humid ball field.

Count Me In! Be a Volunteer at Your Child’s School BY SARA KENDALL

T here is nothing more valuable than the gift of your time and energy. Volunteering

at your child’s school is a wonderful way to be involved in your child’s school life and give back to your community. Not only will you be building a closer bond with your child, you will be sending a positive message that you consider their school and their education to be a worthy cause. Your presence will benefit not only your child, but will also enrich the lives of the other children. If you’re not sure how and where to begin, let these tips guide you and help you become an important role model in your community. Ways to Help Out Every school offers a variety of volunteer opportunities. Helping in your child’s classroom could include reading to the class, tutoring literacy in small groups, or assisting in math workshops. Some teachers will need general classroom help by filing paperwork, re-shelving books, or taking down bulletin boards. Volunteering in your child’s classroom will give you the opportunity to get to know

34 August 2013 | PB Parenting |

your child’s teacher much better. The more face time you have with their teacher, the more likely you will have a higher level of parent-teacher communication. Classroom volunteering will give you the chance to meet your child’s friends and get a better understanding of the friendships your child is forming. You will see firsthand your child’s daily activities and get a clearer understanding of school structure and curriculum. These valuable insights are gained only by being in your child’s classroom. There are many volunteering opportunities outside the classroom such as helping out during a school event, chairing a committee, or serving on the Parent Teacher Association. It is a great way to get to know teachers, administrators and other parents. You will increase your knowledge of the school through your experiences and the people you meet. Class Parent Another excellent way to connect with your child’s classroom is being the Class Parent.

Let Your Child Know Prior to signing up for in-classroom opportunities, have a talk with your child. Most children enjoy having their parents involved, but if you get the feeling your child would be uncomfortable or distracted by you in their classroom, go a different route. Take a behind-the-scenes approach by volunteering in the school library, for a special event or during the book fair. Words of Caution If you are volunteering in the classroom, be careful not to give your child special treatment. Keep everyone on the same level. Showing favoritism could potentially cause more harm than good to your child. If you encounter an unruly child, always defer to the teacher to handle the situation. Let the teacher give the discipline. Don’t overstep your boundaries. You are there to support a teacher, not co-teach. For The Greater Good Volunteering requests will arise throughout the school year. Pitch in whenever you can. Any way you can lend a helping hand to your child’s school will be greatly appreciated by teachers and administrators. You will become a valued member of your child’s school while strengthening your ties in your community. There is no better way to spend a few hours for a chance to inspire, educate, and motivate future generations. Sara Kendall is a freelance writer and mother of two daughters.

Great Beginnings Prepare Your Kids for Back-to-School BY SARA KENDALL

A new school year is full of possibilities, but also full of many unknowns. A mix of anticipation and apprehension will be felt by many children during this exciting time. Some will be more nervous than others about what is going to happen. Anxiety is a common feeling from a kindergartener beginning school to a high schooler starting a brand new school. What’s a parent to do? Here are a few ways you can prepare your child for this important transition.

Visit the School Many schools encourage new students to get familiar with the school. It’s important to get a good understanding of school layout. Knowing the basics, like where the classrooms, bathrooms, and cafeteria are located is essential information for every child. A visit will give your child some visual reassurances when walking into the school on their first day. For younger children, take some time to play on the outside play area if not occupied by students. Most kids love to play outside and it will leave a good first impression. Meet the Teacher Whether it is Open House or Back-to-School Night, attend with your child. It will be the perfect opportunity for your child to meet the teacher. Putting a face to a name, your child will gain some comfort from knowing who their teacher is. Mingle with other parents and their children. The more familiar faces your child sees on the first day, the better your child will feel when they walk into the classroom. Look around the room and it’s likely there will be a class schedule posted. Review it with your child, so they will know what they will be doing throughout the day. Knowing snack and lunch times are good for you both to know for the day. Getting Home Your child will need to know how they will be getting home. If you will be picking up your child, let them know you will be waiting for them in the carpool line. If your

child will be riding a bus home or a van to an afterschool program, explain the process and how the adults will make sure they will be safe. Arrive on time for pick up. Being late will cause unnecessary stress for your child. Elementary Students It’s hard to predict how a kindergartner or a young student starting out in a new school will react to the first day. Some will cling to their mom while others will walk away without a glance over their shoulder. To ease some fear, try to have your child meet a classmate before the first day. If possible, consider having your child carpool or ride the bus with their new friend, so they will be walking into the school with someone they know. Tweens and Teens This age group will experience a larger school setting. Learning to find their way around the school from lockers to classrooms can cause some stress. It will take some practice to get comfortable with their new surroundings. Make sure your child visits the school prior to the first day to give them a chance to learn the lay of the land. Social issues will play a big role on their outlook on school. Fitting in, as well as making and keeping friends are big concerns. Encourage your child to seek positive friends who will be good influences in their lives.
