In seventeen days or less, the sounds of that early morning alarm clock will be going off and it is time to start another school year! Last year was my daughter’s first year at Elementary school. Ten Ways to Save on Back to School Shopping BY STEPHANIE NELSON, COUPONMOM.COM
1. Inventory so you won’t overbuy. Go through drawers and closets to inventory your child’s current wardrobe. Sort items that are too small or never get worn at all and donate them to a local charity. Older children’s acceptable outgrown clothes can go to a younger sibling, if possible. After determining the number of acceptable outfits you already have, you can make a realistic list of specific items you need to buy. 2. Plan. The key to saving is planning. Before you leave the house to start buying school clothes, backpacks and supplies, sit down and plan what you need to buy with your student. Discuss what your student wants and make a specific list of what they need to buy – this will save money, time and stress. While you are out do not overbuy, it‘s easy to do before you see what your children like. Once the school year is going for a few weeks you can sit down again with your child and plan what they need and prefer. 3. Tax Free can save you up to 6%! Take advantage of tax-free holiday during

Florida’s Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday. During this 10-day sales tax holiday that will begin at 12:01 a.m., Friday, August 7, 2015, and end at 11:59 p.m., Sunday, August 16, 2015. During this period, no Florida sales tax or local option tax will be collected on sales of clothing, footwear, and certain accessories selling for $100 or less per item, on certain school supplies selling for $15 or less per item, and on the first $750 of the sales price for computers and certain computerrelated accessories when purchased for noncommercial home or personal use. For more information and details on what you can and can’t buy go to http://dor. myflorida.com/dor/tips/pdf/tip15a0105_2015final06192015.pdf. 4. Check newspapers and websites. Watch for special promotions in the newspaper ad circulars. Many will have generous coupons in addition to sale prices. Also, check out store websites where you can find great coupons. 5. Email. When you check your favorite store websites for coupons and promotions also sign up for their email

newsletter to get special coupons and discounts. Be sure to subscribe to the email newsletter of your local mall, too. You will be sent information and free coupons for special promotions. 6. Purchase a few extras now. Watch for sale prices of up to 90% (or even get free items) at this time of year and stock up for the entire year. Look at store ads for grocery stores, drugstores, big box discount stores, and office supply stores. Bargains will continue starting now through September. When a note comes home from the teacher in January requesting more paper or crayons you’ll have extra on-hand.

7. Price Match. Take advantage! Basic school supplies are at their lowest price during this time of year (50-90% off )— some items are as low as 1 cent each, or even free after a coupon or promotion. Check the advertising circulars for grocery stores, drugstores, office supply stores and even dollar stores. Find the lowest advertised price for every item that you need, circle the item and price in each circular, and take all of the circulars to the closest store that “price matches,” meaning they will honor any other store’s lower price. Walmart and Target stores have a national price matching policy. Call your local stores ahead of time to ask if they price match and many will match competitors’ prices if you ask. Save time, money and gas! Stride Rite • Skechers • Naturino
8. Backpacks. For younger children, the $5 to $10 backpacks on sale at discount and drugstores may be all they need. As students get older, it could be worth investing in a higher quality backpack to last several years. You can expect a good backpack to last a few years and provide the necessary support and padding for heavier books. 9. Shoes. The back to school season is the busiest time of year for shoe sales. As a result, stores have many special promotions to get our attention. Because common promotions are “buy one pair, get the second pair 50% off” it makes sense to take your entire family shoe shopping together. If you can find a coupon to use along with special promotions, you will really save. And, if you know the size and style of shoe you need, check online shoe retailers for bargain prices, coupons and free shipping to save time and money. 10. Wait and save with online shopping. Shop summer sales to get a few new items for the beginning of the year. Then, wait to shop for fall/winter clothing in a month or so when those items start going on sale. Check the retailers’ websites for special coupons, promotions and free shipping offers. Stephanie Nelson is the Coupon Mom. Her website, www.CouponMom.com, has 7 million members, and she is established as the nation’s top expert in couponing across the country. Stephanie has been on every major national television talk show and taught millions how to save money for the past 13 years. She has been called ‘”the rock star of the recession” by the Washington Post and her book, The Coupon Mom’s Guide to Cutting Your Grocery Bills in Half, is a New York Times best seller.

Back to School Countdown & Checklist Whether their summer was jam-packed
with activities or filled with complaints about being bored with nothing to do, kids often have a tough time making the backto-school transition. Battling the Butterflies As with any new or potentially unsettling situation — like starting school for the first time or entering a new grade or new school — allow kids time to adjust. Remind them that everyone feels a little nervous about the first day of school and that it will all become an everyday routine in no time. Emphasize the positive things about going back to school, such as hanging out with old friends, meeting new classmates, buying cool school supplies, getting involved in sports and other activities, and showing off the new duds (or snazzy accessories if your child has to wear a uniform). It's also important to talk to kids about what worries them and offer reassurance: Are they afraid they won't make new friends or get along with their teachers? Is the thought of schoolwork stressing them out? Are they worried about the bully from last year? Consider adjusting your own schedule to make the transition smoother. If possible, it's especially beneficial for parents to be home at the end of the school day for the
12 August 2015 | PB Parenting |
first week. But many working moms and dads just don't have that flexibility. Instead, try to arrange your evenings so you can give kids as much time as they need, especially during those first few days. If your child is starting a new school, contact the school before the first day to arrange a visit. And ask if your child can be paired up with another student, or "buddy," and if you can be connected with other new parents. This will help both of you with the adjustment to new people and surroundings. To help ease back-to-school butterflies, try to transition kids into a consistent schoolnight routine a few weeks before school starts. Also make sure that they: • Get enough sleep (establish a reasonable bedtime so that they'll be well-rested and ready to learn) • Eat a healthy breakfast (they're more alert and do better in school) • Write down the need-to-know info to help them remember details such as their locker combination, what time classes and lunch start and end, their homeroom and classroom numbers, teachers' and/or bus drivers' names, etc. • Use a wall calendar or personal planner to record when assignments are due, tests will be given, extracurricular practices /rehearsals will be held, etc.

Have them organize and set out what they need the night before (homework and books should be put in their backpacks by the door and clothes should be laid out in their bedrooms)
Back-to-School To-Do's Parents themselves can be a little nervous about the first day of school, especially if they're seeing their little one off for the first time or if their child will be attending a new school. To help make going to school a little easier on everyone, here's a handy checklist: What to wear, bring, and eat: • Does the school have a dress code? Are there certain things students can't wear? Will kids need a change of clothes for PE or art class? • Do your kids have a safe backpack that's lightweight, with two wide, padded shoulder straps, a waist belt, a padded back, and multiple compartments? • Do kids know not to overload their backpacks and to stow them safely at home and school? • Will your kids buy lunch at school or bring it from home? If they buy a school lunch, how much will it cost per day or per week? Do you have a weekly or monthly menu of what will be served? • Have you stocked up on all of the necessary school supplies? Medical issues: • Have your kids received all necessary immunizations? • Have you filled out any forms that the school has sent home, such as emergency contact and health information forms? • Do the school nurse and teachers know about any medical conditions your child may have, particularly food allergies, asthma, diabetes, and any other conditions that may need to be managed during the school day? • Have you made arrangements with the 14 August 2015 | PB Parenting |
school nurse to administer any medications your child might need? • Do the teachers know about any conditions that may affect how your child learns? For example, kids with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) should be seated in the front of the room, and a child with vision problems should sit near the board. Transportation and safety: • Do you know what time school starts and how your kids will get there? • If they're riding the bus, do you know where the bus stop is and what time they'll be picked up and dropped off? • Do you know where the school's designated drop-off and pick-up area is? • Are there any regulations on bicycles or other vehicles, such as scooters? • Have you gone over traffic safety information, stressing the importance of crossing at the crosswalk (never between parked cars or in front of the school bus), waiting for the bus to stop before approaching it, and understanding traffic signals and signs? • If your child walks or bikes to school, have you mapped out a safe route? Does your child understand that it's never OK to accept rides, candy, or any other type of invitation from strangers? What About After School? Figuring out where kids will go after school can be a challenge, especially if both parents work. Depending on a child's age and maturity, you may need to arrange for afterschool transportation and care. It's important for younger kids and preteens to have some sort of supervision from a responsible adult. If you can't be there as soon as school's out, ask a reliable, responsible relative, friend, or neighbor to help out. If they're to be picked up after school, make sure your kids know where to meet you or another caregiver. (Continued on page 17)

Although it might seem like kids who are approaching adolescence are becoming mature enough to start watching themselves after school, even kids as old as 11 or 12 may not be ready to be left alone. If your kids or teens are home alone in the afternoons, it's important to establish clear rules: • Set a time when they're expected to arrive home from school. • Have them check in with you or a neighbor as soon as they get home. • Specify who, if anyone at all, is allowed in your home when you're not there. • Make sure they know to never open the door for strangers. • Make sure they know what to do in an emergency. To ensure that kids are safe and entertained after school, look into after-school programs. Some are run by private businesses, others are organized by the schools themselves, places of worship, police athletic leagues, YMCAs, community and youth centers, and parks and recreation departments. Getting involved in after-school activities: • Offers kids a productive alternative to watching TV or playing video games • Provides some adult supervision when parents can't be around after school • Helps develop kids' interests and talents • Introduces kids to new people and helps them develop their social skills • Gives kids a feeling of involvement • Keeps kids out of trouble • Be sure to look into the child-staff ratio at any after-school program Also, make sure after-school commitments allow kids enough time to complete school assignments. Keep an eye on their schedules to make sure there's enough time for both schoolwork and home life.
Helping Homework Love it or hate it, homework is a very important part of school. To help kids get back into the scholastic swing of things: • Make sure there's a quiet place that's free of distractions to do homework. • Don’t let kids watch TV when doing homework or studying and set rules for when it needs to be done. • If your kids are involved in social media, be sure to limit the time spent on these activities during homework time. • Keep text messaging to a minimum to avoid frequent interruptions. • Never do their homework or projects yourself. Instead, make it clear that you're always available to help or answer any questions. • Review homework assignments nightly, not necessarily to check up, but to make sure they understand everything. Encourage your child to: • Develop good work habits from the get-go, like taking notes, writing down assignments, and turning in homework on time • Take their time with schoolwork • Ask the teacher if they don't understand something To ensure kids get the most out of school, maintain an open channel of communication with the teachers by e-mailing or talking with them throughout the school year to discuss your kids' academic strengths as well as weaknesses. Most of all, whether it's the first day of school or the last, make sure your kids know you're there to listen to their feelings and concerns, and that you don't expect perfection — only that they try their best. © 1995- 2015 . Consider an EKG Screening as Part of Your Child’s Back-to-School Checkup BY ANTHONY ROSSI, MD If your child is participating in a team sport, cheerleading, dance or even physical education this upcoming school year, consider taking your child to a cardiologist for an EKG screening. Every three days in the U.S., a student athlete dies of sudden cardiac death (SCD). Usually, there are no advance signs of SCD, and a typical school or sports physical examination won’t detect a potentially dangerous heart problem. That why an electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) screening is so important. This simple heart test takes only a few minutes, and can mean the difference between life and death. If the screening detects a possible problem, a cardiologist may recommend other diagnostic tests to get a better understanding of your child’s heart. SCD is often related to congenital heart conditions, such as abnormal chambers or valves, or to an abnormal thickening of the heart muscle, a coronary artery problem or an inflammation of the heart muscle caused by a viral infection.
30 August 2015 | PB Parenting |
An EKG screening is particularly important if your child has suffered any of these symptoms: • Frequently feeling faint • Feeling dizzy during or after exercise • A racing heartbeat during or after exercise • Chest pains of any kind The risk of SCD also increases if someone else in the family has had a heart attack or heart arrhythmia. Nicklaus Children's Hospital offers free EKG screenings to middle and high school sports participants at the Nicklaus Children’s Palm Beach Gardens Outpatient Center in Legacy Place. David Drossner, MD, pediatric cardiologist, is available for cardiology consultations. To schedule an appointment for a free EKG screening or for a consultation with Dr. Drossner, please call toll free at 1-855- 624 -3547. Anthony Rossi, MD, is medical director of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.

Back-ToSchool Food Safety Tips for Parents and Caregivers BY MARIANNE GRAVELY
B ack to school, back to the books, back in the saddle or back in the car
for all the parents. The new school year means its back to packing lunches and after school snacks for students, scouts, athletes, dancers, and all the other children who carry these items to and from home. One ‘back’ you do not want to reacquaint children with, however, is Bacteria. Bacteria that cause foodborne illness, commonly known as food poisoning, grow rapidly at temperatures between 40 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. In just two hours, these microorganisms can multiply to dangerous levels, which can cause foodborne illness. To make sure lunches and snacks are safe for those you pack for, you should follow the USDA’s four steps to food safety: Clean – Separate – Cook – and Chill. Packing Tips • If the lunch/snack contains perishable food items like luncheon meats, eggs, cheese, or yogurt, make sure to pack it

with at least two cold sources. Harmful bacteria multiply rapidly so perishable food transported without an ice source won’t stay safe long. Frozen juice boxes or water can also be used as freezer packs. Freeze these items overnight and use with at least one other freezer pack. By lunchtime, the liquids should be thawed and ready to drink. Pack lunches containing perishable food in an insulated lunchbox or soft-sided lunch bag. Perishable food can be unsafe to eat by lunchtime if packed in a paper bag. If packing a hot lunch, like soup, chili or stew, use an insulated container to keep it hot. Fill the container with boiling water, let stand for a few minutes, empty, and then put in the piping hot food. Tell children to keep the insulated container closed until lunchtime to keep the food hot 140 °F or above. If packing a child’s lunch the night before, parents should leave it in
•
the refrigerator overnight. The meal will stay cold longer because everything will be refrigerator temperature when it is placed in the lunchbox. If you’re responsible for packing snack for the team, troop, or group, keep perishable foods in a cooler with ice or cold packs until snack time. Pack snacks in individual bags or containers, rather than having children share food from one serving dish.
Storage Tips If possible, a child’s lunch should be stored in a refrigerator or cooler with ice upon arrival. Leave the lid of the lunchbox or bag open in the fridge so that cold air can better circulate and keep the food cold. Eating and Disposal Tips • Pack disposable wipes for washing

South Florida Science Center And Aquarium Hosts Event For The Smallest Scientists Annual “Stroller Daze” event is open to children ages birth to 5 years Calling all parents and caretakers of small children … crawl on over to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium on Wednesday, August 26 for the Center’s annual “Stroller Daze” event. Open to children age birth to 5 years, the morning-long exploration includes extra age-appropriate activities for a reduced admission. “We believe that it is never too early to get children engaged and learning about science,” said Science Center CEO Lew Crampton. “Our mission to ‘open every mind to science’ includes the youngest of minds, too, which is why we are focusing even more efforts on early childhood education programing. Just recently we opened a newly created space, the ‘Discovery Center,’ powered by PNC Grow Up Great, exclusively for our youngest guest – complete with a 16-foot water table, light bright wall and dress up station - because we know that STEM careers, those with a base in science, technology, engineering and math, are in high demand. We look forward to welcoming our future scientists and their families on August 26.” From 9 a.m. – noon, parents and caregivers can engage in a variety of
age-appropriate crafts and activities, including storytelling, fire truck exploration, a planetarium show, “Discovery Center” exploration, live musical entertainment by Patty Shukla, kid yoga demos, giveaways and much more. Admission is $7 for adults and free for children and Science Center members. Complementary vision screenings will also be provided in honor of Amblyopia Awareness Month. In addition to the special activities, guests will also have full access to the Science Center, including the most recent traveling exhibit, Eww! What’s Eating You?. Eww! What’s Eating You? is a parade of parasites, including preserved and live specimens – specifically those that enjoy feasting on humans. The highlyinteractive summer exhibit digs into the history of human and parasite interaction from ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt, leading up to a more modern tale of sinister and saint critters that live to hitch a ride on human hosts – for the good or the bad. The exhibit is on display through Sunday, September 27. The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, named the 2014 Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches’ nonprofit

The Cell Phone Dilemma BY KERRIE MCLOUGHLIN
As parents, we want to keep our children safe, and cell phones seem to promise to do just that. But at what age does a child become responsible enough to be able to handle all that might go along with a cell phone, like texting, the Internet, minutes and charges, manners and more? And what guidelines do you need to have in place before handing over that phone? Some parents are dead set on their pre-teen not having a cell phone. Jennifer McClure, mom of 3, makes the point, “I don’t think a pre-teen needs a cell phone. Until they or their classmates are old enough to drive, they shouldn’t be stranded anywhere, because some adult should be with them. So why would they need a cell phone?” It would seem that few elementary age children are responsible enough to be able to handle a cell phone. To combat some of the bigger problems, you can get a phone without Internet access or texting services, and it can also have set minutes and a tracking device. All families are different, though, and face different circumstances. Suzanne Andrews, mom of 4, says, “I think kids ‘need’ cell phones either when they start driving or if their family situation is such that they or

their parents are difficult to reach.” Divorced, single or working parents, for instance, like to make sure their child has a way to reach them at all times, no matter how young the child. Shelley Ryan, mom of two teens, says, “It all depends on the kid and what they do. Both of my kids have had jobs/volunteer gigs long before they could drive (and before they were teens), and both had phones so they could call when they were ready to be picked up or had a change of plans. I also like them to have a phone if they go somewhere on foot or on a bike without a parent. It gives them a little more freedom to go out into the world on their own.” It also gives them a sense of independence and they don’t have to seek out an adult and ask to use their phone. But parents, beware! Chris Oliver, mom of one and middle school counselor, says, “Take it from a woman who spends every working day with 800 adolescents, you need to monitor your child’s texts. And regarding the camera attached to that phone: nothing good is going to come of that!” Victoria L. Solsberry, LCSW, BCD, PC, a therapist in Arlington, Virginia adds, “I think that cell phones are a good idea for protection and
to contact parents, but I would not give a young teenager or preteen the ability to text.” Here are some rules and issues you could discuss with your child to ease her into a cell phone instead of turning it immediately into a huge responsibility and potential problem: Responsibility — A cell phone comes with a lot of baggage! It needs to be charged, kept out of reach of younger children … not be lost. There’s also the factor of younger kids possibly not being able to use good judgment or understanding with things like inappropriate texts/use of the camera, the financials of a cell phone, Internet service, etc. Cost — Make sure your child understands the financial picture involved with a cell phone. If they have a prepaid phone, they can see how many minutes they have left and need to understand how much those minutes cost. If you get a set number of minutes to include texting for your child, check your account online weekly to make sure your child isn’t going over minutes and costing you hundreds of extra dollars. Make sure your child knows that things like games, ring tones, sending pictures and Internet time can cost extra and have them pay you back for overages. Safety — Be sure to find out and talk about the law in your state about texting or talking on the phone while driving and some of the consequences that have happened to other kids because of doing so. Model being prepared — Always have backup phone numbers in case your child loses his cell phone, it dies, or your child does not answer (or if your child is grounded from his phone). Make sure you have numbers for coaches, schools, friends, the parents of your child’s friends, etc.

Manners — Kids should know basic telephone manners no matter where they are. Solsberry says, “I’ve seen kids sitting in the same room text each other …. It also keeps them from other activities and keeps them from spending time with family members … And no phones at the dinner table, whether it be at home or a restaurant.” Consequences — Be prepared to take the phone away if your child misuses the privilege of having the cell phone. Examples would include texting inappropriate pictures of themselves or others to friends or classmates, using the phone as a way to cheat on tests at school, making prank phone calls, bullying or visiting pornographic web sites. Kerrie McLoughlin’s 5 kids range in age from 4-13 and so far none of them has a cell phone. Check ’em out at TheKerrieShow.com.

As the kids head back to school, there's no better time to make a fresh start in the kitchen, too. Substituting nutritious ingredients such as sorghum in your favorite grain-based foods is an easy way to upgrade your family's menu this fall.
Celiac-friendly (gluten-free) substitutions: • •
Some of the traditional snacks kids love most - such as cakes, cookies and doughnuts - can all be prepared using sorghum, a gluten-free cereal grain grown throughout the world. This • highly versatile ingredient is naturally high in fiber, iron and protein, and can be used in a wide range of preparations. In fact, white food-grade sorghum can be milled directly • into whole grain flour to produce foods such as brownies, breads, pizza dough, pastas, cereals, pancakes and waffles. Whether it's a power breakfast to fuel the day, a sweet lunchbox treat or a tasty after school snack, these recipes showcase how simple it can be to give your kids' favorite treats a nutritious makeover.
