Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Back to School time is here! It is a bittersweet time. While I have enjoyed some lazy summer mornings, I am ready to get back to a solid routine. This year I have some big milestones. My youngest son is starting Pre-K and my stepson starts Middle School. Two opposite worlds and lots of transitions for all of us. Check out page 8 for a great article written by local mom and attorney Shahar Pasch about starting the school year struggle-free. This is a great informative article for any parent but especially if your child is on an IEP or 504. My least favorite thing to do when school starts is pack lunches! I have three lunch boxes to prepare in the morning for three children who all have very different likes and dislikes. Local super-mom of four, Samantha Clark, chats with local food blogger and mom of two, Kelly Rodrigue, about creative and healthy alternatives to pack in your child’s lunch box for the school year. I can’t wait to try the Raw cookie recipe! Finally, check out our School Spotlight and handy pull out Palm Beach School Calendar that you can keep at your fingertips all year long with all of the early releases and days off. Good luck moms and dads (and students too!) Happy Parenting,

A Struggle-Free School Year BY SHAHAR PASCH

For most families, the beginning of the new school year brings hope. Hope for new friends, inspiring teachers and exciting new experiences. There are some families, though, who also experience a feeling of dread about the new school year. For children who struggle in school, either academically or emotionally, facing another year of seemingly insurmountable challenges brings a fresh wave of anxiety. As parents, we can be a strong voice for our children to receive the educational interventions, services and accommodations they need to succeed. Being an informed advocate is critical to your child’s success. If your child already has an IEP or 504 Plan, then make sure you are familiar with the services and accommodations. Attend Meet-theTeacher Day and Curriculum Nights to get a glimpse into your child’s day. Take these opportunities to gather information about the classroom routines, rules and expectations. This is not the time to ask about your child’s individual progress and challenges. Instead, ask the teacher general questions such as: “what is the homework policy,”“tell me about your classroom management system,” or “what critical benchmarks, tests or projects should we expect this year.” 8 August 2016 | PB Parenting |

Ask to see the classroom library and verify it contains books at your child’s reading level. Pay attention to where your child sits in the classroom: is it by a door or window, near the back of the classroom, or near where the teacher sits or provides lessons. Request a copy of the class schedule, including the fine arts wheel, 90 minute reading block, lunch and recess times. Look around the room to make sure that your child’s IEP or 504 Plan is being followed. Is your child’s seat located near the teacher or by the door? If your child needs a visual schedule, is it readily available? If your child has an individualized behavior plan, is it being implemented? All of this information will ultimately help you advocate for a plan to best serve your child’s needs. For example, if attention and focus are issues, then you can make sure your child is seated in the area of least distraction. Follow up with your child to make sure he/she understands the classroom rules and dynamics. If I could give one piece of advice to any parent of a child struggling in school, it would be, “Put it in writing.” The best way to communicate with your child’s teacher is through email. Every teacher and administrator has a District provided email address. If you have a friendly, personal relationship with a school staff member, then they may text or call you. This is nice, and even appropriate if your child is generally doing well, but this is

not necessarily the best way for you to be a strong advocate for a child with special needs. Sending an email creates a permanent, written record. By sending an email, you have proof that you made a request and/or put the school on notice about your concerns. It is also a way of documenting the school’s response, or lack thereof, to your concerns and requests. If your child struggles in school, then you should schedule a meeting with your child’s teacher during the first month of school. This should be sufficient time for the teacher to get to know your child’s strengths and needs. Request this meeting by email. Include a list of issues that you would like included on the meeting agenda. If your child has an IEP or 504 Plan, you do not need to wait until an annual IEP or 504 review in order to meet. You should send the email request to your school’s ESE coordinator or 504 Designee. If your child does not have

an IEP or 504 Plan, then simply email the teacher. Staff email contact information should be listed on the school Edline page and on the District’s website. Some children experience a “honeymoon” period during the first few weeks of school, when they are still getting to know their teachers and classmates. It is still important to meet with the teacher in order to review any needs the child may have, assess their progress after the long summer break, and ensure that any interventions or services from the previous school year are continuing. You can discuss how your child is adjusting to their new class and if they are making progress on their goals. If your child receives a related service, such as Speech and Language Therapy, it is important to confirm that the service is being provided. What if your child struggles in school but does not have an IEP or 504 Plan? How do you know if your child is behind? First and foremost, trust your instincts. If you think your child is behind, you should send an email requesting to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss reading progress. Don’t wait until your child falls further behind. Most importantly, ask your child’s teacher to provide your child’s most updated reading level. Palm Beach County uses the Running Reading Record system as one tool to assess a child’s reading proficiency. Look up your child’s level on the chart to determine where he/she falls in gradelevel reading proficiency. (http://www. palmbeachschools.org/ec/documents/ TrimesterBenchmarkReadingLevelsFinal. pdf) Ask the following questions at the parent/teacher conference: What reading program are you providing my child to help him/her catch up to grade level? What literacy skills do you think my child needs to improve (i.e. word recognition/

10 August 2016 | PB Parenting |

comprehension)? What strategies are you using to address these needs? How are you providing these interventions to my child (i.e. small group, individually)? Make sure you receive a written conference report at the end of your meeting to document what was discussed, any concerns you raised and your child’s current reading level. Once you have all of this information, start your research. Is your child a year or more behind in reading? Is the reading program currently being provided to your child really the best program to address your child’s needs? Has your child fallen further behind, or made progress, over the past school year? Do you think your child needs more or different interventions in order to catch up? Depending on how you answer these questions, you may want to email the school ESE coordinator to request formalized interventions and/ or an evaluation. Again, it is important to make sure your requests are made in writing. Do not be afraid to include school administration or District level staff in your emails if you feel that your concerns are not being adequately addressed. If your child is struggling with behavior, then don’t wait until the teacher calls you to request a conference. Most of our children want to do well. They don’t enjoy getting into trouble. For some children, though, is it difficult to control their impulses or behavior in a highly structured and stimulating school environment. Children struggling with emotional or behavioral challenges require clear expectations and a system which rewards positive behavioral choices. The “carrot instead of the stick” approach to school discipline is most effective in helping children overcome behavioral challenges. If you feel that your child is constantly in trouble, you get regular phone calls

regarding behavior problems, or your child has received a disciplinary referral, then you should proactively meet with the school to identify ways to help your child succeed. Parents have an important role to play in developing a plan to help their child succeed in school. No one knows your child better than you. As a strong parent advocate, you should be an active part of the school’s process of identifying the root of the behavior, creating a positive plan to address the behavior, having open communication between home and school, and helping your child feel good about him/herself. These are all vital components towards overcoming behavioral challenges and, therefore, the school should embrace and welcome your participation. If you feel shut out of this process, put your concerns in writing and continue your advocacy up the chain of command.

There are so many challenges that our children confront when we send them to school. The pressures to perform academically and socially are higher than ever. For our children with learning, physical, developmental, or emotional disabilities, these challenges can feel overwhelming. You are your child’s best advocate, so continue to ask questions and demand answers. I wish all of your children a successful school year! Lunchbox Makeover BY: SAMANTHA G. CLARK

We send our children off to school in their newly purchased sneakers, backpacks filled with school supplies and hopefully- lunch money. But if your children are like mine, and insist that you pack them a different lunch and snack every day of the week, then your choices are minimal and become redundant towards the end of the first month. You’ve been pinning every creative sandwich there is on Pinterest, but have your kids actually eaten it? If you are as reluctant about cooking as I am, you might scoff at these recipes. But I assure you, they are easy and completely doable. I met with Kelly Rodrigue, writer of the online blog, Red’s Reality, for some help creating fun and healthy lunches and snacks that my children would actually eat. Rodrigue is a local mom with two children, Brenton (10) and Brianna (8). Her blog focuses on health and fitness since she and her family live a

paleo and gluten free lifestyle. She created these tried and taste tested lunch options that are sure to leave your kids excited for lunch. Healthy “lunchable” Ham, turkey and cheese slices with a side of plantain chips, strawberries, blueberries and a paleo chocolate Haystack. Haystack recipe 2 cups choice of nuts – (ie. sunflower, almond or pecans) 1 cup shredded coconut 1/4 teaspoon pink Himalayan salt 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil Blend nuts and coconut in the food processor until they are small bits and pieces. Put the nuts and coconut in a bowl. In a separate bowl melt chocolate, vanilla,

and coconut oil. Once melted pour the chocolate mixture over the nuts and coconut and mix until combined. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and make haystacks as big or small as you would like. Place in the fridge for 30 minute to harden and also store in fridge.

Turkey wrap with paleo tortilla You can use any lunch meat and vegetables, but Rodrigues suggests to keep it colorful for nutritional and aesthetic purposes.

Need CASH? Bring in your trendy, cool stuff & walk out with $$$ in your pocket! Plato’s Closet offers gently used denim, tops, coats, dresses, skirts, hoodies, shoes, belts, purses, jewelry and more!

You can use almond/peanut butter and jelly for a sweet version of this wrap. For the wrap recipe and to purchase her dry mix, visit her blog www.redsreality.com.

however you can use just about anything. To keep the yogurt and fruit cold for lunch time, make sure to place an ice pack in the lunchbox.

Hot lunch Gluten free pasta topped with cheese, carrots, zucchini, garlic butter and some crumbled bacon. The snacks are carrots and tomatoes with dip, grapes, and Enjoy Life chocolate chips. Rodrigue uses a small thermos to keep her pasta fresh and warm. Snacks Your children come home from school famished and grab the first thing they see. Rodrigue suggests having healthy alternatives to the cookies and donuts they might ask for, such as: • almond butter on celery • piece of fruit • organic squeeze applesauce • Larabar • cheese sticks • raw cookie - A raw cookie is a healthy alternative to the Chips Ahoy your kids might be used to. Raw cookie recipe 2 cups dates 1 1/2 cup nuts - I use walnuts 4-5 tablespoons of cacao 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons vanilla 1/3 cup chocolate chips Put all ingredients into the food processor except the chocolate chips. Process until you get almost like a dough consistency. Then put the chocolate chips into the food processor to mix them in. Make

into balls or flatten into cookies and put them on a parchment lined pan and put in the fridge for 20 minutes. Store in a container in your fridge.

Piano, Voice, Guitar, Drums, Violin, Clarinet, Sax Lessons

Rodrigue stresses the importance of fueling our bodies with the right nutrition and says, “Our bodies thrive with the right diet and our children need all they can get with their busy schedules of school, after school sports and activities.” She insists that lunches can be quick, colorful, fun AND nutritious. I hope your children find these lunches and snacks unique and tasty. Have a happy and lice-free school year. To learn more about these recipes and more, please visit www.redsreality.com. Samantha G. Clark is a former English teacher turned stay-at-home mom. When she isn’t chasing after her four children that range from ages seven years old to six months, she enjoys running and spending time with her family.

It’s Time! Teaching Kids Time Management Skills BY CHRISTA MELNYK HINES

“What are you doing?!” I say to my son. “I told you five minutes ago to get dressed. We are leaving for your baseball game!” Even in my apparent state of frustration, my 6-year-old refuses to be rushed along as he reluctantly tosses his toy plane onto the floor and slowly begins pulling one sock on and then another. His inner clock shows no urgency. And no amount of lecturing about dillydallying is going to expedite my dawdler. So begins another frantic dash out the door. Although some of us may be inclined to consider punctuality, or the lack there-of, as a personality trait, experts say that time management is a skill that can be taught and is just as important to academic and long-term success as learning the three Rs. “Time management skills for children are linked to ‘school survival skills’

when mastered young and become ingrained habits for later in life,” says Dr. Stephanie Mihalas, a nationally certified school psychologist and clinical instructor, department of Psychiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA. “Starting too young is never too early!” Time management includes executive functioning skills like organization and planning, reviewing work for quality and accuracy and staying focused. Schedule weekly family meetings. Use Sunday evenings to discuss the family’s upcoming schedule. Give each child her own calendar that she can fill out. Hang up a master schedule with each person’s activities in a different color of ink. Use a timer. Build awareness about how long it takes to complete a task. Ask your child to estimate how much time he needs to finish his math assignment and then time him. With practice, he’ll start

to realize how long each task actually takes.

Use your microwave or your phone timer to help remind you when it’s time to check on your child. Create a chunked to-do schedule. Divide the day into chunks of time on a dry erase board or laminate a task list. For example, the morning routine might say: Get dressed, make bed, eat breakfast and brush teeth. Your child can check off the tasks as she completes them.

Fewer checks results in natural consequences like less time to play with friends or watch a favorite TV program before school. Use visuals. For children who aren’t reading yet, photographs or pictures can help cue them. “I helped my son take responsibility for his morning routine as a kindergartner by drawing pictures on post-it notes of school clothes, eating breakfast, driving to school and stuck them on an analog clock,” says mom of two Sherlyn Pang Luedtke, author of The Mommy Advantage. Luedtke says that the day her son was still sitting in his pajamas when it was time to go, she calmly put him in the car with his clothes and shoes next to him. “He got dressed while the car was in the driveway with the engine running,” she says.

If at first you don’t succeed, keep trying. Changing old habits can take at least a month, and kids don’t usually share the same sense of urgency as adults do. “If a morning goes poorly, rather than being furious and upset on the way to school, try and problem solve to decide what to do tomorrow so this doesn’t happen again. Maybe that’s waking up a few minutes earlier,” Sosland says.

Too Sick for School? I’m usually a pretty good judge of when my kids are too sick to go to school or daycare, but other times — like when my youngest seems to be dragging but has no fever — I’m just not sure. How can I tell when they’re well enough to go to school and when they should just stay at home? – Allyson Many parents have a hard time deciding if their kids are well enough to go to school. After all, what well-intentioned parent hasn’t sent a child off with tissues in hand, only to get that mid-morning “come get your child” phone call? But making the right decision isn’t as tough as you might think. It basically boils down to one question: Can your child still participate in school activities? After all, having a sore throat, cough, or mild congestion does not necessarily mean a child can’t be active and participate in school activities. So trust your instincts. If your son has the sniffles but hasn’t slowed down at home, chances are he’s well enough for the classroom. On the other hand, if he’s been coughing all night and needs to be woken up in the morning (if he typically wakes up on his own), he may need to take it easy at home.

34 August 2016 | PB Parenting |

Of course, never send a child to school who has a fever, is nauseated, vomiting, or has diarrhea. Kids who lose their appetite, are clingy or lethargic, complain of pain, or who just don’t seem to be acting “themselves” should also take a sick day. If you decide that your child is well enough to go to school, check in first. Most childcares, preschools, and grade schools have rules about when to keep kids home. For example, pinkeye or strep throat usually necessitates a day home with appropriate treatment. Usually, kids can’t return to school or childcare until at least 24 hours after a fever has broken naturally (without fever-reducing medicines). And remember, go with your gut. You know your kids best, and you know when they’re able to motor through the day — and when they’re not. First Line of Defense Against Germs Germs can spread many ways, including: • touching dirty hands • changing dirty diapers • through contaminated water/food • through droplets in the air released during a cough or sneeze • on contaminated surfaces • through contact with a sick person’s body fluids When kids come into contact with germs, they can unknowingly become infected simply by touching their eyes, nose, or mouth. And once they’re infected, it’s usually just a matter of time before the whole family comes down with the same illness.

The girls, in levels 1 through 7, competed at the Walt Disney World Wide World of Sports on June 29July 2, where gymnasts from around the country vied for medals on vault, uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise, and the combined All-Around placement. “This year was our best showing at Nationals since we started attending in 2002. Our girls have been working really hard this year and it shows. This meet was very late in the season this year and we were worried about the kids getting burned out, but remarkably they stayed focused and we had amazing results,” explained head coach Julie Willmott. “ I couldn’t be prouder of the girls and my amazing coaches!” The gymnasts who traveled to the meet

competed in levels 1 through 7 and were divided by age for awards. In all, the team brought home 52 gold, 17 silver, 12 bronze, and 44 copper medals given for top half of the age group. “We have a great group of girls on the team. Three of our athletes swept their age groups winning all four individual events and All Around. We also had five athletes name All American which meant that they had the highest All Around scores over all of the age groups in their session. There may have been as many as 60+ girls that they scored higher than,” Willmott added. “It’s truly amazing how well they’ve done at Nationals year in and year out as a lot of the them are involved in other sports and activities. Most of our athletes are also straight A students. It just goes to show how hard work and dedication pay off.” Every single athlete we took to this Nationals placed at least once in the top half of her age division. Everyone is so excited about the Olympics and it’s giving them extra motivation to get back in the gym and start preparing for our upcoming season!” Rising Stars will be hosting its 10th annual Novemberfest meet 11/12 & 11/13. Meanwhile, the gym hosts recreational classes for toddlers through teens year round, and has open gym every Friday night during the school year.
