Quick Bits Back to School with Dr. John by Jackie HULL It’s almost back to school time and all the children are getting ready to head back after what hopefully was a great summer break. Nursery rhymes tell us that Mary couldn’t bring her lamb to school because it was against the rules. If Mary had only had a service animal to assist a blind or handicapped person she could have had it go to school with her as provided by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

For the past eight years Dr. John, a yellow Labrador Retriever, has been making regular visits to the Pre- K classroom of Ms. Barbara Gerharz at Greenacres Elementary School. “Doc” is the guide dog of Gary Metzler. They were partnered together at Southeastern Guide Dogs in Palmetto, Florida where Dr. John was bred, born and raised to be a guide dog for the blind. Gary is blind using his guide dog as a mobility assistant to help him navigate more independently. Together they go about their business and part of their goal is to visit schools, youth groups, conferences, and other gatherings to explain what it is like to be blind and what is expected of the guide dog and to demonstrate to the students that even a dog can go to school so that the can have a career when they are older. Dr. John has been on twenty one cruises, has flown throughout the United States and was even asked to go to Mexico to visit some resorts to see how the staff would respond to a service animal. They love to educate people about guide dogs and their purpose.

this is something that they would like do. Doc loves visiting with children. When he is told that he is going to visit the kids, he perks up, wags his tail and is ready to spread some puppy love around.

To arrange a visit with Dr. John you can Dr. John and Gary would love to visit your child’s school, preschool or day care facility. contact him at drtravel@bellsouth.net or by phone at 772-418-7937. Check with the administrator and see if

“Back-To-School”– three words that strike dread into the hearts of students and parents alike. The kids are waving goodbye to long summer days and resenting the piles of homework, while parents are dreading the expense of all of the backto-school knick-knacks. While there’s not much to do about reducing the amount of homework, Back-To-School spending can easily be trimmed without skimping on quality or quantity; in fact, you can simultaneously save money AND increase the quality of the goods you’re buying. 1. Let Sales Dictate What You’re Buying and When - You don’t need to buy ALL items in one shopping trip. If the sales dictate your purchases, you’ll find different items on sale each week (sometimes even for FREE) and get everything for a cheaper price. Instead of going to a specific store in hopes of a good sale, wait until you receive an email, text, tweet, etc. when there’s a sale and/or a coupon. Also, items should be picked up throughout the year when they’re on sale for a great price. Even if they’re not needed immediately, if an item is 50% off or more, it’s well worth the sale. 2. Stock Up! - It’s a great idea to buy more than just what’s on the school supplies list

10 August 2012 | PB Parenting |

while prices are low to make sure you don’t have to run out to a store to purchase more supplies while the kids are in the middle of a project — since that always seems to be the case! Also, since many stores will basically be giving away items, it might be a nice thought to grab more to donate to your children’s school or to families who might not be able to afford school supplies. 3. Easily Find Discounts at Name Brand Stores - In the weeks leading up to school, many ‘expensive’ stores, particularly office supply stores (e.g., Office Max, Office Depot and Staples) and national drug stores (e.g., CVS and Walgreens) will have unbelievable deals on school supplies, including many items for a penny or even for FREE. When it comes to clothing, keep an eye on higher end mall stores like The Gap, Gymboree, Macy’s and the like. With a good sale and/ or a great coupon, you can often scoop up clothing for far less than at discount stores. 4. Shop From Your Couch – Online Shopping - Free shipping and online coupon codes are plentiful, and you can also receive cash back when shopping at many national retailers and specialty stores (most can be found at Ebates.com). Online shopping is best when items can

be returned or exchanged in store or the online retailer offers free returns and exchanges. Bargains that aren’t in stores can also be found on sites such as www.amazon.com. Scoring a brand name, high quality shoe for less money than a no name brand from a discount store is more preferred to everyone’s liking! 5. Take Advantage Of Price Matching/ Price Adjustments/Competitors Coupons - Many major retailers, office supply chains, craft stores, and online sites will either match their competitors’ prices and/or accept each other’s coupons. Better yet, some stores will not only match a competitor’s price, but will beat it by 10% of the price difference! If you purchase an item that goes on sale within 7-14 days (often as long as 30 days), you might be eligible for a “price adjustment.” Customer service, whether online or in-store, will refund the difference between the current reduced price and the price you paid. To see a list of stores and their policies, check out www.eyeona.com. You can even combine a price adjustment with a price matching policy for super savings!

any day any waterslide

6. Super Savings on Clearance - Simply purchase the essentials and then buy the rest a few days or weeks later when it ALL goes on clearance – that’s when you want to scoop up the rest of the year’s supplies.

7. Invest In Quality Where It Counts And “Cheap Out” Where It Doesn’t - Minimize your spending on items that don’t need Pediatric Dentistry to stand the test of time, like tops, dresses Specializing in Dentistry forAdolescents Infants, and Children, Adolescents Specializing in Dentistry for Infants, Children, those with Special Health Care n and bottoms, but invest in quality for items and those with Special Health Care needs where quality counts such as coats, jackets, Michael J. Enrichments Help Prepare Children for the Classroom by Sensei Wilson We work hard to prepare our children to go back to school the best way we know how. We all know this; however, can we do a better job of preparing their mind, body and spirit for success?

Self defense and mental toughness gives children the strength to deal with negative peer pressure, bullying and life’s challenges, all while getting and staying physically fit and healthy!!

Do your children have the personal discipline to do whatever it takes to maximize their potential? Do they possess the confidence to say “no” to unhealthy or negative peer pressure? How about the focus and concentration essential to earning and maintaining great grades?

Sensei Wilson’s passion for the Martial Arts and the joy he receives from influencing the lives of children and adults, alike, stems from a diverse background and over 23 years of intense training. Holding a 4th Degree Black Belt, Sensei Wilson and the instructors at Lifestyle Martial Arts teach a blend of Kenpo, Muy Thai & Krav Maga. Leaders in the Martial Arts industry have awarded him the title of “Program Director of the Year” 7 times!

Martial Arts is a great way to prepare children for success mentally, physically and emotionally in and out of school. 4 thru 6 year olds are at their most impressionable stage of developing their social and listening skills and focus. They are at a great age to learn the value of working hard to earn something while developing a “non-quitting spirit”. Martial arts programs can instill the confidence and positive attitude it takes to set high goals, as well as the self discipline to do whatever it takes to accomplish these goals.

Owning locations in Boca Raton and Delray Beach has given him the best opportunity to influence more children and adults to improve their mind, body and spirit while learning self defense. For more information call the East Delray Beach location at (561) 865-5672 or West Boca Raton location at (561) 482-5621, or visit the website at www. lifestylemartialarts.com.

To get your school year off to the right start - Go to page 18 for details on how to win a month of Martial Arts Training from Lifestyle Martial Arts Schools (Boca Raton or Delray Location).

KNOW THE RULES... For Going To and From School More Safely

Every day millions of children take to the streets and highways to get to and from school. For many children this experience is a new one, and they may not understand or be able to use the safety rules. Young children do not have the same frame of reference for safety as adults do. They may not “look before they leap,” which is why it is so important for families to supervise young children and practice safety skills with their older children to make certain they really know and understand them. In an analysis of attempted nonfamily abductions the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) found approximately 36% of attempted abductions happened when a child was going to or from school or a school-related activity. The tips noted below will help prepare for a safer journey. 1. Instruct your children to always TAKE A FRIEND, always stay in well-lit areas, never take shortcuts, and never go into isolated areas. Teach them to stay aware of their surroundings and observe all traffic rules in place to more safely share the roads and sidewalks with others. 2. Walk the route to and from school with your children pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. Make the walk to and from school a “teachable moment” . Make a map with your children showing acceptable routes to and from school. If your children wait for a bus, wait with them or make arrangements for supervision at the bus stop. 3. If anyone bothers your children or makes them feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused, while going to or from 16 August 2012 | PB Parenting |

school, teach your children to trust their feelings, immediately get away from that person, and TELL you or another trusted adult. If an adult approaches your children for help or directions, remember grownups needing help should not ask children; they should ask other adults. Instruct your children to never approach a vehicle or accept money or gifts from anyone. 4. Even though there may be safety in numbers it is still not safe for young children to walk to and from school, especially if they must take isolated routes anytime during the day or in darkness. Always provide supervision for your young children to help ensure their safe arrival to and from school. 5. Instruct your children to leave items and clothing with their name on them at home. If anyone calls out their name, teach them to not be fooled or confused. Teach your children about the tricks someone may try to use to confuse them or engage them in conversation. Children should also be taught that they do not need to be polite if approached and to get out of the situation as quickly and safely as possible. 6. Ensure current and accurate emergency contact information is on file for your children at their school. If you, or another trusted family member or friend, need to pick up your children, make sure to follow the school’s procedures. These procedures need to include the school’s confirmation with only those you authorize to pick them up.

7. Teach your children if anyone tries to take them somewhere they should quickly get away and yell, “This person is trying to take me away” or “This person is not my father/mother/guardian.” Teach your children to make a scene and every effort to get away by kicking, screaming, and resisting if anyone tries to grab them.

your children to always CHECK FIRST with you before doing anything. Also teach your children to always CHECK FIRST with you if they want to change their plans before or after school.
