History and Philosophy Atlantis Academy was established in Miami in 1976 as an innovative school for students who need a personalized program. The school emphasizes the importance of excellent parent/teacher/student relationships, the goal of which is to form a close working relationship between the family and the school. Through open communication between parents, faculty, and the administration, parents regularly participate in developing and forming the best method to achieve the student’s individual goals as well as the goals of the school. Our Program Atlantis Academy has a low student-to-teacher ratio that greatly facilitates the learning process. Kindergartenthrough-twelfth grade groups are designed for students who function on varying grade and academic levels. Our core curriculum is reading, math, language arts, social studies, and science. Additional subject areas may include art, computers, physical education, and Spanish. Teachers begin at a student’s diagnosed instructional level and assist in achieving mastery by using innovative techniques, personalized instruction, and focusing on each individual’s strengths.

Love Bottle: Each day in the US more than 60 million plastic water bottles are thrown away. Most end up in landfills or incinerators and millions litter America’s streets, parks and waterways. Love Bottles might just be the answer to the age-old problem of how to get rid of all those plastic disposables! Love Bottles are the most adorable, reusable, glass water bottles that you have ever seen! Our new bottles carry a special message to everyone who drinks from them. When you take your next sip, look through the mouth of the bottle and read the message: U R Loved. Let it sink in. Remember that you are a special, amazing, and utterly unique human being. Made in the USA, BPA-Free, Dishware-Safe. Available online at www. lovebottle.com.

The Sav vy Party Planner: Countdown To A Stress-free Birthday Celebration BY CHRISTINA KATZ Planning a memorable birthday event can be the highlight of your child’s year, if you maximize the fun and minimize the stress. The best way to increase the magic and decrease the madness is to use a handy checklist so you can start early and get ready gradually. Or if you want to plan your party in one fell swoop a few weeks ahead, this checklist will help you do that, too. I have been planning and hosting birthday parties for over a decade, and these steps will get you from vision to fruition. Follow these timing tips, and you’ll be able to keep a smile on your face from the day you start planning until the moment the final guest is picked up or dropped off. 10. Choose A Theme. Always have a theme. Having a focus will help you plan and execute your party without a hitch. Several months before your party date, brainstorm themes with your guest of honor. See sidebar on pg. 11 for theme suggestions. 9. Make Reservations. If there is one
8 February 2016 | PB Parenting |
thing I have learned about popular party venues, it’s that they fill up early. Once you have your theme and know you will need a location away from home, get your reservations nailed down tight two-three months in advance. 8. Find Supplies Online. Shop local when you can to support your local economy, but for those hard-to-locate items, don’t burn up time and gas searching for what you can easily find online. Generally speaking, one-stop party stores are not as prevalent as they used to be and you’ll likely be delighted by the variety you can find online. Just make sure to place your orders at least a month early to allow for shipping time and returns if anything is not what you’d expected. 7. Send Out Invitations. Evite wins hands-down for quick and easy party invites. Just visit evite.com, select a theme, add in your guests’ e-mail addresses, and send your invitations. Two weeks notice is usually just the right amount of time. But if it’s a busy time of year, add another week or two.

6. Order The Cake. Cakes and cupcakes can get expensive when you make them from scratch. Besides, the kids will probably like the local big-box or grocery store sheet cakes just as much as homemade. Order one week ahead for pickup up on party day for the freshest results. 5. Tackle Your Local Shopping List. Despite ordering ahead online, you probably still have few items you need to pick up locally. Be sure to pick them up at least a week ahead in case you can’t find something and need to order it online after all. 4. Recruit helpers. Why try to do everything yourself when you can have so much more fun at your party with plenty of helping hands standing by? Who Can Help? Both parents need to contribute. Don’t forget to factor in Dad’s strengths before, during, and after the festivities. Babysitters or neighbor teens make great party helpers. I pay our sitter to attend because I always need extra help, and I also want her to share in making memories.
Box Office 561-993-1160
Exchange party help with a friend. You help with her child’s party and then ask for the favor back for your child’s party. Just ask! You never know when a guest’s parent might enjoy helping and you might make a new mom friend this way. Once you have the final attendance list, use evite.com to inquire if anyone is available to pitch in.
All dates, artists and programs subject to change.
Some people make better “special guests” than helpers. Siblings of yours or the guest of honor may fall into this category, as may elderly grandparents or

visiting relatives. For peace of mind during the party, only invite those you know in advance will be gracious helpers. 3. Plan Favors. Favors don’t have to be expensive or intricate. For a home party, go simple, fun, and inexpensive. Be as eco-friendly as possible by offering favors in a reusable container. If hosting a party elsewhere, consider letting the party be favor enough or simply offering a small treat to guests on the way out like a lollipop or a candy necklace. 2. Set Up A Day Ahead. If you are ordering any large food deliveries like pizza, place your order a day ahead. Don’t forget to check online for any discounts or coupons. Then

go ahead and tackle as much prep work as you can. Decorations? Food preparation? Party favors? Activity prep? Everything will go smoother on party day if you take care of as much as you can the day before. 1. Party Down! Get a good night’s sleep. Allow at least two hours prior for set up and one hour afterwards for clean up. Then enjoy every memorable moment. Designate a party photographer, if your hands will be full to document the day. Christina Katz has planned some fun birthday parties over the years including a pony party, a bowling party, and a roller skating party. But her all-time favorite was the sleepover spa party.

Creative Ways to Tell Your Child ‘I Love You’: On Valentine’s Day or Any Day of the Year BY KIMBERLY BLAKER
Valentine’s Day is a perfect excuse to show your child just how much he or she is loved. Use these creative ideas to show how much you care on Valentine’s Day and throughout the year.
for your child. If poetry isn’t your thing, look up simple children’s rhymes, and make revisions especially for your child. Poems can be serious or fun, but either way, your child will love it.
EDIBLE IDEAS A heart a day…. Add a shaped candy to your child’s lunch box every day of the school year. Be sure to stock up during after-Valentine’s Day sales so you don’t run out.
A valentine welcome Welcome your child home from school with a valentine banner across your front porch or entryway. Add cute sayings that remind him why he’s the greatest son; create fun sentences by clipping words from magazine ads; and add some valentine doodles.
Heart shaped lunch Use a large, heart shaped cookie cutter to make heart-shaped sandwiches, toast, and other treats. Your kids will love the shape and that you’ve eliminated the crust. A cupful of love Give your child a “World’s Greatest Son/ Daughter” or “I Love You” cup, and then use it whenever you serve hot cocoa or graham crackers and milk. Do lunch Pick up your child from school for a surprise lunch date. Hit her favorite fast-food joint, go on a picnic, or have lunch together in the school cafeteria. (If you choose the latter, make sure your child won’t mind to avoid social embarrassment.) THE WRITTEN WORD A poet and didn’t know-it You don’t have to be a poet to write a poem

Snail mail surprise Kids love to get mail, so why not send your child a card, letter, or postcard. Don’t forget to let him check the mail to discover the greeting himself. Say it with email Send your child an email with a link to a fun website or a funny animated e-greeting. With the abundance of entertaining websites and free e-greetings, you can send your child something new every day of the year. Scrabble greetings Wish your child a “Happy Valentine’s Day,” congratulate him on a great report card, or show how much you appreciate his help with a scrabble message. For younger readers, spell out a simple phrase leaving a space between words. For older kids, make them figure out your greeting. Intersect the words as you would in playing Scrabble and
see if they can solve the message.
Spring & Summer Camp SUMMER CAMP SUMMER CAMP **Limited Seating**
C is for…. Make a poster portraying your child’s characteristics. Put her name at the top, and then list as many positive descriptive words as you can that begin with her initial. Use a thesaurus to find oodles of words. (Example: Cassandra, cute, caring, creative, crafty, curious.) When you finish, laminate or frame it, and hang it in her room. Poetry praise Give your child a poetry book written especially for sons or daughters. To My Son with Love or To My Daughter with Love on the Important Things in Life, written by Susan Polis Schultz, offer encouragement and a new understanding of your love and commitment. Don’t forget to add your inscription inside. DO IT TOGETHER Love is silly One thing kids love and do best is act silly,

so loosen up and join in the fun. If being silly isn’t your style, take a few lessons from your child, and practice up. Letting loose is a great way to de-stress and to let your child know he’s fun to be around.
A trip down memory lane Flip through photo albums or watch family videos together, and reminisce about favorite holidays, vacations, and family times you’ve had.
A gift of time For today’s busy parents, finding time to read to or play with your child isn’t always easy. Fortunately, quality, rather than quantity, is what matters most. Show your child you care by setting aside a few minutes each day to talk, read, or play together, and you’ll both reap the rewards.
Eventful gifts Buy tickets to a concert, ice show, or sporting event your kids have been dying to see, but don’t keep it a surprise. On the day of the event, just say you’re all going out for dinner or some other concoction, and then catch your kids by surprise when you arrive at your true destination.
A class connection As kids grow, together-time becomes increasingly rare. Decide with your adolescent on an activity or hobby that the two of you would enjoy together. Sign up for a class or set a regular schedule for the activity, and mark it on your calendar. Treat it as you would any other commitment, not letting daily life interfere.
Make a date Plan a regular date with your child for oneon-one time. This works especially well for families with more than one child. Each parent should take a turn with each child, and go out for lunch or supper, play puttputt golf, take in a movie, go roller-skating, or spend an afternoon at the park. Set a regular schedule so your child can look

PB Travels 5 Days,
5 Springs BY: KEVIN MIMS Ichetucknee Springs Photo: Peter W. Cross/VISIT FLORIDA
Spring Break is coming up! Got five days on your hands? Do what visitors and native Floridians have been doing for generations: spend time at a spring. Freshwater springs are the ultimate yearround attraction, and we’ve got more of these crystal-clear natural wonders than any other place in the country. North and Central Florida have the highest concentrations of springs, making it super simple to create your own personalized trip, depending on your schedule and how much you have previously traveled in the area. If you haven’t had the privilege of visiting many Florida springs in the past, here’s a sample trip that follows a fairly linear route with a stop at a spring a day. Let’s hit the road: 1. Wakulla Springs State Park Located just 15 minutes south of Tallahassee, Wakulla Springs State Park is the perfect northern anchor for a springs road trip. For starters, this is the deepest freshwater spring in the world. History, nature and film buffs, if the scenery looks like something from a Tarzan movie, that’s because it is. Wakulla Springs is the location of many Hollywood classics, including “Creature from the Black Lagoon.” Be sure to take the famous river cruise while you’re there, too. 32 February 2016 | PB Parenting |
2. Ichetucknee Springs State Park If you’ve been in Florida for any length of time, this is probably the spring your parents told you about. While there are several places around the state where you can take a tube trip, the Ichetucknee River rules them all. It’s a no-frills, easygoing adventure that can be enjoyed by all, no matter if you’re 8 or 80. While there, hang out at headsprings and take the half-mile trail to Blue Hole Spring, another outstanding gem located in the park. 3. Fanning Springs State Park Make a stop for a relaxing afternoon of swimming and picnicking. If you have a kayak, make sure to bring it along – Fanning Springs feeds the legendary Suwannee River, so you’ll definitely want to spend some time paddling while you’re there. Alternatively, Manatee Springs State Park is located just a few miles north of Fanning Springs in Chiefland, so you have a couple of great options in this area. 4. Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park Folks, this is manatee country. While you’ll be out of the water at Homosassa Springs, you will be entertained by plenty of wildlife exhibits and attractions. Make sure to visit with Lu the Hippo, one of Homosassa’s most famous residents. You have another option for adventure at this stop in the trip – Crystal
River’s Three Sisters Springs, one of the most magnificent jewels in the state. In the winter, expect to see more manatees than you’ve most likely ever seen in once place. 5. Weeki Wachee Springs State Park For the grand finale – or a grand start if you’re beginning your trip in the south – you’ll be greeted by the world-famous mermaids who have made this spot loved by visitors from around the globe. The mermaids have been delighting guests since 1947 and the tradition continues during several regular performances, 365 days a year. Also, in the summer months, hang out at the park’s Buccaneer Bay attraction, with water slides and a white sandy beach that’s perfect for getting the ultimate Florida tan. Round out the whole experience with a kayak trip on the Weeki Wachee River, one of the most scenic paddling trips found anywhere. No equipment needed – just head over to Paddling Adventures, the park’s outfitter.
