Stay Healthy in the New Year! BY BARBARA L. BALDWIN, DO, FACOP

It’s that time of the year to commit to your New Year’s resolution. One of the most common resolutions is a promise to exercise more and stay fit -- and it is often one we fail to keep! Try these tips to help you and your family healthy in the New Year and all year long. Choose an activity you can easily convert into exercise. If you live close to your child’s school, don’t carpool. Instead, walk or ride a bicycle. With mom or dad walking or riding along, this simple activity can be turned into both a fun event as well as exercise. Mix it up: walk one day, then ride a bike the next. Save the car for rainy days. Take different routes to make it interesting. Stop off at a park on the way home. Choose an activity that can easily be incorporated into your routine. Walking or riding a bike to school with your children fits into your routine better than piling everyone into a car three times a week to go to a family gym! Spice up the time when you perform routine activities. If you set aside an hour every Saturday for the family to dust, vacuum, straighten the kids’ rooms, etc., make it fun. Be silly. Turn on music and dance while dusting. The child with the best dance routine -- and who completes their chores -- gets a prize!

8 January 2016 | PB Parenting |

Get the family involved in a new activity. Join the kids to learn martial arts: they will get a kick out of sparring with dad. Have family swim meets at the pool with prizes for swimming across the pool the most times or for the first time a small child splashes into the water. Get involved in ‘geocaching’ – finding hidden treasures and planting some as well. Get a dog. Walking the dog, running with the dog and throwing balls with the dog are all ways to get you and your family moving. Find out which school activities you can participate in. Many schools have walks and mini-races for special causes. Get the family involved, and get into ‘training’ mode by practicing the activity in the weeks ahead. Or, join in a club’s carwash to raise money for a trip. Plan ahead. Everyone will be hungry after family exercise sessions. Prepare healthy snacks, such as fruits and veggies -- not chips and cookies. Drink water, not soda. Health and family are two of the most important things in life: try combining them in the New Year and everyone will be better off! Dr. Barbara Baldwin is the South Florida medical director for After Hours Pediatrics Urgent Care. She is board certified in pediatric medicine and a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians.

From the Couch to the Pavement A Plan to Get You Moving

Get Moving — What are you waiting for? We all know exercise is good for us, but about 80 percent of Americans don’t get the recommended amount of physical activity. What steps have you taken to live a more active life? Are you sitting on the couch waiting for someone to motivate you to get up? Do you tell yourself, “Tomorrow I’m going to get healthy”? Or is it more like, “I wish I could fit into the clothes I love, but I don’t know how to make that happen?” We’ve all heard “It’s never too late!” or “Anyone can do it.” And guess what? It’s true! If you don’t know where to start, don’t know how to fit in fitness or feel overwhelmed with life’s daily tasks, take heart! We’re here to help you make a plan to change your habits, and improve your health, your heart and your waistline. People give many reasons for not making their health a priority. Do any of these excuses sound like things you’d say? Address Your Obstacles “I’m so busy. I just don’t have time!” Many Americans live with a packed schedule. You can make your health a priority over life’s other demands. Even our nation’s president sets aside time to exercise! You don’t have to do your whole workout all at once. Get up 30 minutes

10 January 2016 | PB Parenting |

earlier in the morning to take a brisk walk, or tack on an extra 30 minutes in the afternoon or evening to raise your heart rate with strength training. You can exercise in two or three 10-15 minute blocks and still benefit! Try our top 10 tips to get more exercise! “I can’t afford a gym membership.” Walking is free! If it’s cold or rainy, head to one of the many shopping malls that open their doors early for walkers and joggers. Sometimes gyms run specials. Watch for these at the beginning or end of the year. Or consider buying some workout DVDs or borrowing them from the library. You can even download exercise podcasts. Whatever you choose, find a way to start moving! Get started with these tips for long-term success. “I got bored with my workout routine.” Try something new! There are so many ways to get active. Try tennis with some friends, soccer with your kids or even just switching from yoga to pilates. Your body will respond to the change, and you might notice firmer muscles or extra pounds melting off. Regardless, variety helps you stay more invested in living an active life. Here are some easy tips to get active.

“I feel too tired after a workout.” Chronic fatigue with exertion can signal a problem, but if your healthcare provider clears you for exercise, you may just need to pace yourself better. Walk before trying to jog. You may want to consider other energy-boosting plans, too. • Are you pacing yourself and keeping your heart rate at the right level? • Are you getting enough sleep at night? • Are you eating food that fuels your body, or are you eating too much food that your body can’t use?

“I don’t like working out alone.” This is a common complaint that’s easy to fix. Find a buddy! Get a walking partner or introduce yourself to someone at the gym, join a team or a walking group, find a neighbor to walk with or exercise with your family. When you exercise in pairs, it’s easier to hold each other accountable – especially on those cold, rainy days!

You can also listen to audiobooks or your favorite music on days when no one is available to join you. “I’m too young” or “I’m too old.” Neither excuse is true. When you’re in your 20s and 30s, it’s important to regulate your body’s metabolism, strengthen your heart and prevent diseases. When you’re older, exercise plays a vital role in keeping you healthy and strong. Several studies document how regular exercise improves quality of life during the aging process. So if you’re exercising when you’re in your 80s, you just might feel like you’re in your 70's! Learn more about preventing heart disease at any age. “I’m new to exercise,” or “I’m overweight and I don’t know where to start.” Is this you? It’s easy to use these excuses as mental roadblocks to success. Don’t let them stop you. Everyone needs to start somewhere. Determine Your Starting Place Here are some steps to help get you started. Assess yourself. Realistically, what can you do? There’s no good excuse for denying yourself a healthier life! • Can you walk a mile? How long does it take you? • Can you continue to walk at a brisk pace for 20 minutes? For 30 minutes? • Can you swim one lap? • How many push-ups can you do? • Can you bend down and touch your toes? Your starting point is always based on what you can do! Try tracking your activity and look at it as a place to start and build up more as you are able. Use our online Heart360 tracker or a printable activity tracker.

12 January 2016 | PB Parenting |

Add on gradually. Gradually increase your workouts by setting goals. If you can walk 1 ½ miles in 30 minutes, your pace is three miles an hour. You can train your heart to handle a faster-paced walk using intervals. For example, every five minutes, try pushing yourself to walk one minute at a faster pace. Before you know it, the faster pace will be your new normal. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week (brisk walking, for example). Cardio exercise burns calories and benefits your heart and lungs. Strength training with weights or resistance bands is also recommended two to three times a week. Strength training builds muscle which, in turn, burns fat and helps your muscles and joints stay healthy for a long, physically active life. A combination of these two types of exercise is important for good health. Many reliable resources are available to help you get started. Books, DVDs, podcasts and personal trainers are a few examples. Are you still sitting on the couch? Put on your shoes and move your body! Turn on your favorite music and dance. Today is the day to start on the road to better health. Remember, it’s OK to start slowly and build up to your goal. Article provided by the The American Heart Association, the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. To improve the lives of all Americans, they provide public health education in a variety of ways. They are the nation’s leader in CPR education training. Their mission is to help people understand the importance of healthy lifestyle choices.

Sneaky Way To Get Movement In Your Day • Do housework. • Work in the garden or mow the grass. Using a riding mower doesn't count! Rake leaves, prune, dig and pick up trash. • Go out for a short walk before breakfast, after dinner or both! Start with 5-10 minutes and work up to 30 minutes. • When watching TV, sit up instead of lying on the sofa. Or stretch. Better yet, spend a few minutes pedaling on your stationary bicycle while watching TV. • Stand up while talking on the telephone. • Walk the dog. • Park farther away at the shopping mall and walk the extra distance. Wear your walking shoes and sneak in an extra lap or two around the mall.

Do You Have a Family Media Policy?

BY J. CHRISTOPHER MCGINNIS, PH.D.

Screens, screens, and more screens. Computer monitors, laptops, iPhones, iPads, movies, videogames - and that's just the kids. In this age of ubiquitous electronic media, we all run the risk of getting too little sleep, not exercising enough, and forgetting that our spouses and children need more face time with us (and I don't mean the face time brought to you by the friendly folks over at Apple). Our children might have it worse, for they, unlike us, can't remember a world where if you were bored you'd hop on your bike and go find a friend around the neighborhood to play with. Much of their education, leisure time, and social lives are online, sometimes to their detriment. They know no differently. That's life in the electronic age. Unless we take a countercultural stand and actually actively parent them through this new normal. Our kids need our leadership, not unfettered electronic playtime. They need to develop good 26 January 2016 | PB Parenting |

habits, adequate spoken language and social skills, and a work ethic, to be in training for the day they leave our homes for college and beyond, when they must survive and hopefully thrive on their own. We as adults can't go online unless we have purchased the electronic device, established and continue to pay for the service, established and continue to pay for the wifi signal, landed and continue to keep the job that allows us to pay for all of this, and completed all the chores that had to be done before we can take a minute and relax. What has your child done to earn his or her screen time today? I regularly counsel striving for overall family life balance and earned screen time for our kids. Lots of things should take priority over screen time. We should protect time for sleep, homework, and daily family time. Our kids also need exercise each day.

As for sleep, our four year olds need 11 hours per night, our ten year olds need 10 hours, and our seventeen year olds need 9 hours. That's being asleep, not just being in bed. For homework, our elementaryage children should have about 30 minutes of reading and 30 minutes of old-fashioned sit-down homework to do each day, while our middleand high-school age children should have between one and two hours of homework and studying each day. If you are in doubt about your child's homework load, just ask his or her teacher what should be expected so you can enforce it. Family time, with no distractions - just people hanging out and looking and talking to each other - should be at least ten minutes of your day and hopefully

an hour or more, especially over dinnertime. Don't forget to BE a family before it's too late. The annual trip to Disney really doesn't do it. For daily exercise, I recommend at least an hour of physical movement that gets the heart beating faster, and no more than an hour or two of inactivity at a time unless of course it's after bedtime. Our children should earn their daily screen time by having been and continuing to be good citizens today, meaning that they have independently (without our help or reminders) completed their chores and homework, they consistently make it easy for us to be the unchallenged leader of the family, and they follow the Golden Rule with their siblings and other children. We have our jobs, they have their jobs, and that is their job: to be consistently and increasingly independent, respectful, and helpful. How much screen time is too much, provided that our kids are getting enough sleep and exercise and they have proven to be good citizens today? The American Academy of Pediatrics since 2011 has argued for NO screen time for those under two years of age and a limit of two hours for those three years old and older. However, this month the AAP has signaled that it - and its recommendations - are getting hipper to the idea that our little ones can benefit from certain educational apps and that our tweens and teens can have a whole healthy and rewarding social life online. Their October 2015 AAP News suggests among other things an increasing acceptance that "media is just another environment", "content matters", and "it's okay for your teen to be online". All that said, I recommend that instead of time-

based guidelines, priority-based and safety-based guidelines are preferred. Regarding those safety-based guidelines, we must monitor our children's online life just as we do their sidewalk life. I encourage parents to announce as early as possible in their children's lives that privacy should not be assumed and that you will be monitoring everything, because our primary job in life is to maintain their safety and welfare while knowing that kids will be kids. If we say this early and with love, they should not be upset about it, they should feel safer, and they will likely engage in much less risky online activities particularly if we also proactively and routinely review our expectations for their online behavior. If your teen tries to lock you out of her electronic life, don't threaten anything - simply announce that her electronic life is suspended until further notice. Until trust flows both ways, there can be no screen time. Don't let "I'm sorry" escape your lips either - it was her fault, not yours, but redemption will be made available soon. Maybe tomorrow's the day. We'll see. Routinely shut off the wifi signal at bedtime and maintain a family charging station in the master bedroom until the device is earned the next day. With good sleep health in mind, under no circumstances should any child or teen have access to electronic devices overnight. Your kid says he needs the iPhone as his morning alarm? Hand him a $10 old-fashioned alarm clock, cheerfully say you're welcome, and walk away. Lead your family. Raise your kids based on unwavering principles and priorities.

And when it comes to screen time, I hope these considerations for a family media policy are helpful to you in your endeavors. J. Getting Started Right This Semester!

Get Organized This favorite tip remains our #1 strategy for getting off to a great start this semester. Most children thrive in a predictable environment, but this is even more important for kids with learning and attention issues. Create a daily schedule that works for your family that includes eating meals together when possible, designated homework time, designated free time, exercise, and plenty of sleep. Pack backpacks the night before, and set out clothes for the next day. Check all school and sports schedules and discuss a plan for the following day – plan ahead for big projects or events. Try creating a weekly family action plan that includes every member of the family! Set Goals Take a few minutes to talk about goals for this semester – Is your child aiming for a certain grade in each subject? Or, is your student hoping to master a new concept in math or foreign language? If your child takes part in goal setting, he or she will feel more inclined to stay focused on the plan and accomplish the goal. It may be beneficial to agree on a small reward once goals are reached, like a special family activity or night out with friends.

30 January 2016 | PB Parenting |

Help Your Child Feel Good About Heading Back If your child is dealing with learning issues or anxiety, it makes sense to talk through how they feel about going back to school. Take time to discuss any new classes, schedule alterations or other changes that might be challenging for your child. Try making a list of the new, exciting things to look forward to like a new special subject, such as music or art. Or focus on a new extracurricular program or sport that interests your child. Recommit to Making Nutrition a Priority The start of a New Year is a great time to redouble your effort to focus on nutrition. Even if your child has special dietary restrictions, there are dozens of great ideas for tasty snacks and lunches that help keep kids full and focused. Consider trying a few new recipes in your student’s lunchbox this month such as roll-ups, smoothies, hummus, or almond butter. Hydration is important, too, so be sure to send your child back to school with a water bottle! These tips are from Brain Balance Achievement Center of Lake Worth. Find out how your child can benefit from Brain Balance -- schedule a comprehensive assessment today at our Lake Worth center. Call us today at (561) 429-4420 or visit brainbalancecenters.com.

Swap Out Sugar for Better Health You probably realize that eating too many sugary foods and gaining weight go hand in hand. What you may not know is that aside from loading up on calories that help pack on the pounds, consuming too much sugar can also harm your health in other ways.

When you consume too much added sugar, your liver has to work extra hard to process it. Excess sugar in the liver often turns into fat, which can lead to liver damage or other health concerns, such as high cholesterol, diabetes or heart disease.

Consuming more than nine teaspoons of sugar a day for men and six teaspoons for women can lead to health problems, such as tooth decay, obesity and depression. Reducing your sugar intake can help more than your waistline; it can improve your overall health.

It can also overload and damage your pancreas, which controls the blood sugar called insulin that powers your muscles and organs. Lack of insulin can cause muscle and nerve damage.

First, it's important to recognize that there are two types of sugar - natural sugar and added sugar. Natural sugar is found in fruits, milk and some whole grains. Added sugar is sugar that is added to processed foods and drinks, such as cookies, cereals and soda. Added sugar affects your body in many ways. It can be as addictive as drugs, tobacco or alcohol because it affects the same regions of the brain, triggering the pleasure sensors to release dopamine. Dopamine makes you want to eat more, even when you are not hungry.

32 January 2016 | PB Parenting |

Limit added sugars in your diet with these healthy alternatives: • Skip sugary cereals at breakfast. Instead, opt for a protein-rich meal. Options, such as eggs, turkey sausage and whole-wheat toast with peanut butter are healthier ways to fuel your day. • Bring healthy snacks to work to ward off the temptation of sugary treats. Some smart choices include: frozen grapes, trail mix, yogurt, almonds, apple slices and peanut butter with celery sticks. • Instead of pie, donuts or cake, curb your sweet tooth craving by reaching for

fresh fruit, low-fat frozen yogurt or a fruit and yogurt parfait. • If you can't substitute a fruit, make your treats small, such as a single funsize piece of candy. • Sodas, energy drinks and sports drinks sneak in a lot of sugar calories. In fact, a single can of soda has nine teaspoons of sugar - the maximum an adult male should consume in an entire day. Skip the sugary beverages and try hot or iced tea, fizzy water or lemon water instead. Choosing simple substitutions make it easy to replace sugary foods with smarter options for better health. With the peak of flu season approaching, parents may be bracing for an outbreak at their children's schools, but adults are also highly susceptible at work and in other public places. Now is the time for families to take steps to prevent and protect against the flu. With workers missing as much as a week after falling ill with the flu, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services attributes as much as $7 billion in losses for U.S. businesses each year as a result of workers' sick days and lost productivity. Combine that with lost wages, missed school and sporting events, and the overall hit to your personal health, and the toll is higher yet. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates between 3,000 and 49,000 deaths and more than 200,000 hospitalizations each year depending upon the severity of the flu season. People at high risk for developing flu-related complications include children under 5, adults 65 or older, pregnant women,

34 January 2016 | PB Parenting |

residents of nursing homes and other long-term care centers, and people who have medical conditions such as asthma, chronic lung disease, heart disease and blood disorders. "Influenza is a serious viral infection, and the toll on public health each year related to influenza is significant," said Dr. John Hanlin, vice president of public health and food safety at Ecolab. Getting a flu vaccine and taking antiviral medications as prescribed if you do contract the flu are two ways the CDC advocates stopping the spread of flu germs. Another vital factor in protecting yourself from the flu is preventing its spread. The flu is a respiratory infection accompanied by fever and often respiratory complications that is transmitted from person to person, either through personal contact, or through contact with a contaminated surface.

Individuals who have contracted the virus are contagious at least one day prior to displaying symptoms, and up to seven days after they first appear. In addition, the flu virus can survive up to 48 hours on stainless steel and plastic surfaces, and up to 12 hours on cloth, paper and tissues. Properly cleaning and disinfecting can minimize the chances of individuals contracting the virus from a contaminated surface. Prevent contamination To properly clean, disinfect and protect your environment, know that you should: • Clean any visible soil from surfaces before disinfecting. When cleaning and disinfecting, work from top to bottom and from cleaner to more heavily soiled surfaces. • Thoroughly wet the surface with a U.S. EPA registered disinfectant and follow

• Before using hand sanitizer, remove any dirt from hands with soap and water. Apply product to palm and rub hands together until it disappears (15-20 seconds). Extra care in the kitchen Because flu and cold viruses can spread easily to foods and beverages, it's especially important to promote handwashing in the kitchen.
