10 Ways To Keep Cool When It’s Hot It is hard to keep your cool in South Florida when temperatures reach the mid 90s for the next few months . It is important to stay cool not only for your comfort but your safety. Dangerously high temperatures can result in heatrelated illnesses ranging from heat cramps to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The following tips can help you keep cool all summer long. 1. Beat the sun and heat with an early morning or evening activity or workout. 2. Try to stay in the shade when outdoors during peak sunlight. 3. Wear loose-fitting clothing, preferably of a light color. Also cotton clothing will keep you cooler than many synthetics. 4.. Fill a spray bottle with water and keep it in the refrigerator for a quick refreshing spray to your face after being outdoors or take it on the go with you! 5. Fans can help circulate air and make you feel cooler even in an airconditioned house. 6. Try storing lotions or cosmetic toners in the refrigerator to use on hot, overtired feet.

8 July 2018 | PB Parenting |

7. Keep plastic bottles of water in the freezer; grab one when you’re ready to go outside. As the ice melts, you’ll have a supply of cold water with you. 8. Take frequent baths or showers with cool or tepid water. 9. Combat dehydration by drinking plenty of water along with sports drinks or other sources of electrolytes. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these will promote dehydration. 10. Instead of hot foods, try lighter summer fare including frequent small meals or snacks containing cold fruit or low fat dairy products. As an added benefit, you won’t have to cook next to a hot stove. Finally, use common sense. If the heat is intolerable, stay indoors when you can and avoid activities in direct sunlight or on hot asphalt surfaces. Pay special attention to the elderly, infants, and anyone with a chronic illness, as they may dehydrate easily and be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Don’t forget that pets also need protection from dehydration and heatrelated illnesses too.

Summer Survival Insect Repellant and Sunscreen Guide BY DR. SCOTT FISCH, DO, FAAP

Living in a place where millions come to vacation each year most definitely has its benefits. Unfortunately, enjoying the year round sunshine does come at a cost. Whether it is protecting yourself and your children from the harmful rays of the sun, or surviving the almost constant onslaught from those pesky, biting, insects, how much do you know about the various sunscreens and insect repellents that are available? Are they effective? Are they safe? Insect repellents come in many forms, including aerosols, sprays, lotions and sticks. Some are made from chemicals and some have natural ingredients. Chemical repellents containing DEET are considered the best defense against biting insects. The amount of DEET in insect repellents varies from product to product, so it’s important to read the label of any product you use. Studies show that products with higher amounts of DEET protect people longer. For example, products with amounts around 10% may repel pests for about 2 hours, while products with amounts of about 24% last an average of 5 hours. But studies also show that products with amounts of DEET greater than 30% don’t

10 July 2018 | PB Parenting |

offer any extra protection. The AAP recommends that repellents should contain no more than 30% DEET when used on children. Insect repellents also are not recommended for children younger than 2 months of age. Use just enough repellent to cover your child’s clothing and exposed skin. Using more doesn’t make the repellent more effective. Never spray repellent directly onto your child’s face. Spray a little on your hands first, then rub it on to child’s face, sparing the mouth and eye areas. Remember, once you return indoors, be sure your child washes with soap and water to remove the repellent and wash the sprayed clothing before wearing again. Another product has been shown to repel biting insects similar to DEET and that is Picaridin. Products containing Picaridin vary in strength and you should always read the labels for proper use. One may apply Picaridin repellent on clothes and exposed skin. Some more natural products that are on the market such as oil of lemon, eucalyptus, and 2% soybean oil have shown some moderate repelling effect,

however usually last under 2 hours per application. Educating Young Innovators for the 21st Century

Remember these insect repellents prevent bites from biting insects, such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, chiggers, and biting flies but not stinging insects, which include bees, hornets, and wasps.

Despite what a product claims or what their label reads, not all products have the same level of protection. Wristbands soaked in chemical repellents, ultrasonic devices that emit sound waves designed to keep insects away and taking Garlic or Vitamin B1 by mouth have proven to be much less effective. Insects are attracted to stagnant water, garbage, and flowerbeds. Insects are also more prevalent in the evening, beginning at sunset. Other ways you can protect yourself and your children from insect bites is to wear long pants, lightweight long sleeve shirts, socks and closed shoes when you know you will be outside during the evening hours. Avoid dressing your child in clothing with bright colors or flowery prints and don’t use scented soaps, perfumes, or hair sprays as these things may actually attract insects. Mosquito nets should always be used to protect your infants in strollers and baby carriers. Sunlight consists of two types of rays — Ultraviolet A, or UVA and Ultraviolet B, UVB. Both types of rays can be very harmful to our skin and our overall health, with UVB rays being the primary cause of sunburn, premature aging, and potential skin cancer. The effectiveness of sunscreen is measured by its SPF rating. SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is a measure of how well a sunscreen will protect your skin from UVB exposure,

when properly applied. If your skin would normally burn in 20 minutes without sunscreen, applying a sunscreen with an SPF of 10 would allow you to stay in the sun for 200 minutes, or 10 times longer than without any protection. This is just a rough estimate as many factors go into determining how long your skin can tolerate exposure to UVB. Sunscreen with an SPF of 30 blocks 97 percent of the sun’s UVB rays. Higher-number SPFs block slightly more of the sun’s UVB rays, but no sunscreen can block 100 percent of the sun’s UVB rays.

Another key component, often overlooked, is that to get the greatest benefit from sunscreen you have to apply it in the correct amounts. Did you know that most people apply only 2025% of the recommended amount? For the average sized adult, each application

should consist of 1oz, or a shot glass filled with sunscreen with a nickel sized dollop on the face alone. This amount should be adjusted accordingly for the size of person to which it is being applied. Please read the label on your preferred sunscreen bottle for application amounts. Unfortunately, this is not a “one and done” application either. Sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours if swimming or sweating. To prevent sunburn, and the damaging effect from the suns rays, the AAP recommends that infants, under 6 months of age, avoid sun exposure as best as possible, and should be dressed in lightweight long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and brimmed hats that shade the neck to prevent sunburn. However, if adequate shade or covering is not possible, one can apply a small amount of sunscreen, at least SPF 30 with both UVA and UVB protection, to small areas on the baby, such as the face and back of hands. For children 6 months and up, it is best to avoid direct sunlight during the peak hours of 10 AM - 4 PM. On both sunny AND cloudy days, a broad spectrum sunscreen, protecting against both UVA and UVB, should be applied to exposed areas. Hats with brims and sunglasses should also be worn. Smart Ways to Fuel Kids this Summer Pediatrician-approved Solutions with essential nutrients for active kids Parents may be wondering how to ensure their children are staying hydrated, maintaining healthy diets and getting the nutrients they need during the summer months. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the reality is one out of two kids ages 9 and up are missing out on key nutrients like calcium, vitamin D and potassium – putting them at risk for serious health issues. Pediatrician and best-selling author Dr. Tanya Altmann suggests moms can help fill that gap by making sure kids fuel their bodies with proper nutrition. Milk is the top food source for calcium, vitamin D and potassium, and Altmann encourages moms to serve milk at most meals and water in between to ensure kids get the recommended servings of milk, depending on age group, throughout the day. “Milk is a simple way to help give kids of all ages nutrients they need to grow strong, and they already love it,” Altmann said. “Pour a glass of milk alongside your kid’s favorite snack or use milk in a smoothie or oatmeal for breakfast.” This summer, try a twist on a classic, kidapproved lunch – for breakfast. Pair with an 8-ounce glass of milk for nine essential nutrients to fuel summer mornings. Peanut Butter and Jelly Pancake Dippers Recipe courtesy of MilkPEP Servings: 5 (2 pancake dippers per serving) 1/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats 1/2 cup whole-wheat flour 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons brown sugar, packed 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 large egg 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 4 tablespoons reduced-fat creamy peanut butter 1 cup fat-free milk nonstick cooking spray 1/3 cup sugar-free raspberry preserves 1 glass (8 ounces) fat-free milk In blender, combine oats and flours and pulse 3-4 times. Add salt, brown sugar, baking powder, egg, vegetable oil, peanut butter and 1 cup milk. Pulse several times until combined and no lumps in batter.

Raising a Summer Reader When the lazy days of summer arrive and your child's schedule is packed with swimming, camp, and family vacations, it can be a challenge to find time for reading. But kids' reading skills don't have to stop growing just because school's out. Here are some ways to make reading a natural part of their summer fun: Explore your library. Visit your local library to check out books and magazines that your kids haven't seen before. Many libraries have summer reading programs, book clubs, and reading contests for even the youngest borrowers. There are often incentives, such as a free book upon completing their summer reading lists. Young kids will feel extra grown-up checking out books with their own library card. Read on the road. Going on a long car trip? Make sure the back seat is stocked with favorite reads. When you're not at the wheel, you can read the books aloud. Get some audio books (many libraries have large selections) and listen to them together during drive time. Make your own books. Pick one of your family's favorite parts of summer — whether it's baseball, ice cream, vacation, or the pool — and have your child draw or cut out related pictures from magazines and catalogs. Paste the pictures onto paper

to make a book, and then encourage your child to write text for each page. A younger child can dictate the story for you to write down (using your child's words). When you're done, read the book together. Keep in touch. Kids don't have to go away to write about summer vacation. Even if your family stays home, you can encourage your child to send postcards, letters, or e-mails to friends and relatives. Ask a relative to be your child's pen pal, and encourage a weekly exchange of letters, postcards, or e-mails. Keep up the reading rituals. Even if everything else changes during the summer, keep up the reading routines already in place at your house. Read with your kids every day — whether it's just before bedtime or under a shady tree on a lazy afternoon. And don't forget to take a book to the beach! Just brush the sand off the pages!
