Staying Safe in the Water - all Year Round
Summer is here and attendance to the pool, beach and local waterways is up! We often think more about splashing and having fun in the water during the hot days of summer but water safety should be practiced all year round. Sobering Drowning Statistics: • Approximately 10 people drown every day in the U.S., according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
• Drowning is also a silent killer; most young children who drown in pools were last seen in the home, had been out of sight less than five minutes and were in the care of one or both parents at the time, according to the Present P. Child Drowning study.
The USA Swimming Foundation’s Make a Splash initiative is helping to bring awareness to these statistics and hoping to bring the numbers down. When should you start teaching your kids about water safety? “The earlier the better. At Small Fish Big Fish, we take them as young as 2-2 1/2 months old and take them right up to swim team level. We also teach adults. We believe swimming is a lifelong sport. We teach them self confidence, discipline and wellbeing through swimming. The younger they start, the better the foundation,” said Melissa Taylor, Founding Fish and President of Small Fish Big Fish Swim School.

In 2013: – 200+ children ages 1-14 drowned in a swimming pool or spa.1 – 143 of those children were under the age of 5.2 USE AND STORE CHEMICALS PROPERLY
ALWAYS SUPERVISE KIDS USING THE POOL
Mishandling of pool chemicals causes 4,000 emergency room visits each year.5
Establish and enforce rules for pool and spa use.
– Replace pool chemicals past their expiration dates.
– Don’t allow kids to run or play games near a pool/spa.
– Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
– Make sure you know if anyone using your pool cannot swim.
– Keep toys, particularly wheeled toys, away from pool/spas.
– Store chemicals out of reach of children.
USE POOL ALARMS Most young children who drown in pools were out of sight less than five minutes.4 In addition to a fence, consider a certified pool alarm like one of the following: – Wristband (worn on a child’s wrist to alert parents if they fall into the water) – Surface wave sensor (floats on water surface) – Sub-surface disturbance sensor (mounted to the pool wall)
DON’T FORGET THE POOL/SPA COVER Within 10-20 seconds, a partiallyremoved pool/spa cover could return to it's original position, hiding someone underneath.6
PAY ATTENTION TO DRAIN COVERS
– Remove covers completely before using a pool or spa.
Between 2008 and 2012, 39 people were trapped in pool/spa drains including 2 children who died.3
– Between uses, drain any standing water from the cover surface, especially after rain.
– Make sure your drain cover meets current Pool & Spa Safety Act requirements (i.e. certified to ANSI/APSP 16 or ANSI/ASME A112.19.8).
– Don’t let anyone play on or near drains.
– Make sure drain covers are properly installed (no loose/missing screws). – Know where the emergency shut-off switch is located and how to use it.

TAKE STEPS TO BE SAFER AROUND THE WATER Learn to Swim! Follow pool rules. Never swim alone. Use the buddy system and choose locations with certified lifeguards whenever possible. If someone in the water is in trouble, reach, throw, but don’t go! Children, inexperienced swimmers, and boaters should wear U.S. Coast Guardapproved life jackets.
Swimming Safely in Lakes, Rivers and other natural bodies of water Swimming in a natural body of water is different from swimming in a pool. More skills and energy are required for natural water environments because of currents, waves and other conditions—and these conditions can change due to weather. Here are some ways to stay safe: • Be aware of water/weather conditions and look out for: - Fast-moving currents, waves and rapids even in shallow water. - Sudden drop-offs that change water depth. - Other people’s activities in the same waters, such as boating. • Swim only in areas that are designated for swimming and are supervised by lifeguards. • Keep children under constant active supervision and remain free from distractions. Ensure that inexperienced swimmers stay within arm’s reach. • Have weak swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets whenever they are in, on or around water. Do not rely upon water wings or inflatable toys; they can enable swimmers to go beyond their ability or suddenly deflate, which could lead to a drowning situation. Know How to Respond in an Emergency. • If a child is missing, always check the water first! Seconds count in preventing death or disability from drowning. • If present, always alert the lifeguard in the event of an emergency and call 911. • Learn how to respond to aquatic and other emergencies by taking Red Cross first aid, CPR and water safety courses. Caution: No One Is “Drownproof.” Participation in any swim lesson program cannot “drownproof” your child, despite what some may claim. No child is ever “drownproof” or water safe. Learning to swim well takes time. Do not expect that children will learn to swim in one set of lessons or even in one season. Tips provided by the American Red Cross.

Dad Picks a Winner: Quantity Time Comes out Ahead
BY RHONDA FRANZ
Quality time with our children is
important, but in the midst of striving for the ideal, we could be missing out on what we can give to our children during the everyday moments. In between shopping for groceries, taking them to school, and making sure they have what they need, it can become a tendency to hurry from one thing to the other and lose an entire day without connecting to our children. Don’t allow busyness, inconsistent work hours, or a traveling work schedule prevent your family from connecting—even if it’s not the quality time you were hoping for. When Paul Libel’s three children were young, his job as a traveling salesman resulted in multiple days away from home in one stretch, causing him to miss out on time with them every day. In the eighties, long before Face Time, Skype, or even the Internet, a phone call sufficed. Although he had been exposed to the idea of “quality time,” he dismissed the notion as an elusive span of time he was supposed to spend with each of his

children. “I would like to think that the person who came up with the concept of quality time had nothing but the best intentions, but as I kept hearing the phrase ‘quality time,’ I wondered what defined it. How much time was quality time? What do we do during that time?” Libel’s solution was to make the best of the little moments. He would load up his three kids in the car and take them on his regular trip to the city dump to drop off the household trash. The trip became a tradition, and served as a way for him to spend time with his kids. Dr. Heidi Luedtke is a psychologist who shares practical advice for people skills and parenting with readers around the world. She says even small traditions can be used to create moments of connection with children. “Rituals can help parents create more nurturing moments even if they don’t have a lot of time to spend. Events that are repeated become part of our memories and our identities in powerful ways.”
Paul Libel realized early on that moments with our children do not have to be perfect, or even planned. Some days, quality time is elusive, so grab the available moments—however you can— to catch up, converse, and connect with your children.

Dr. Luedtke suggests asking children at night to share the best thing that happened that day, and to say the same “I love you” phrase each time you say goodbye, even if your kids already know it. 10. Going to pick up take out food. Everyone can bond over food.
3. During dinnertime—even if it’s rushed. Let everyone have a chance to talk about their day, or just talk about something random if they want. 4. While cooking meals. Give children a job they can do to in the kitchen or dining room and bond over meal prep. 5. Waiting for food after you’ve ordered at a restaurant. Use a napkin for a game of Tic-Tac-Toe or Hangman, or write out funny questions or pictures for your child. 6. Working on home repair projects. Let them hand you tools and talk to them about what you’re doing and how you’re fixing it. Bonus: having your child around might keep you from swearing. 7. During homework. Be in the same room with them. Even if they don’t need help, you’re there for conversation, or in case a question comes up. This is a good habit to start with young learners. Make space for them in your home office, or

11. While in line at a government office. You’ll likely have plenty of quantity time here. This idea is best for children that are beyond the throw-down/meltdown/ stage, usually age 4 and up. You’ll want to throw a tantrum yourself at the DMV or tag office, and it’s difficult to manage both yourself and your child. 12. Quick board games/card games. When you’re short on time, say, “yes” to Candy Land, Boggle, Slapjack, or Spoons. Postpone Scrabble (and oh goodness, Monopoly) for those days when you really have time. 13. Any transition time from here to there: headed out the door, loading the car for a trip, unloading groceries from the car, walking into school. These are rich opportunities to make something a fun race, joke around and develop rapport with your child when you only have a few minutes to spare. The little moments all add up. Palm Beach’s Newest Charter Schools on the Rise! Palm Beach County has seen a tremendous
growth in educational options over the past couple of years. This year alone, Renaissance Charter School, Inc. will open three new schools managed by Charter Schools USA in the area. “As we’ve watched demand fill and overfill our existing three schools in Palm Beach, it became very clear to us that parents want additional options for their children’s education in Palm Beach,” said Ken Haiko, president of Renaissance Charter School, Inc, the school’s non-profit governing board. “Our strong partnership with Charter Schools USA and Jonathan Hage has proven that building schools in this community not only meets demand, but provides excellent educational opportunities for students.”
“We have choices in everything else, why not public education?” asked Hage. “Every school is not a perfect fit for every child. That’s why we need to provide an environment where students can truly thrive. Our educational model is geared toward making sure every single child improves and grows in their education. We look at the individual child and help them find their path to success.” Personal learning plans are part of the model to which Hage refers. Every child works with his or her teacher and parent to establish a set of learning goals to be monitored and achieved throughout the year. As goals are met, new goals are set.
The six schools managed by Charter Schools USA all have a core curriculum that is focused on the essential academic Charter schools are growing in popularity areas including language arts, reading in Palm Beach County. Students wear uniforms, eliminating unnecessary distractions and keeping the focus on academics instead of designer labels. Charter Schools USA has found that students are big supporters of the uniforms. Many have discovered that looking like everyone else makes it easier for everyone to be equal and cuts down on bullying. Parents enjoy the ease of getting students up and dressed every morning without hassles and arguments. Parents are an integral part of our schools. At our schools, parental involvement is a critical element to their child’s success. Studies have shown that students perform better in school when their parents are actively involved. Principals work closely with parents to provide a wide variety of meaningful volunteer opportunities. This has been welcomed by parents because they want to be a part of their child’s education. Including parents goes beyond volunteer hours. Our student information system, PowerSchool, provides real-time information to parents on a secure server where they can log in and check their child’s progress. Information such as discipline, test or quiz grades and homework is easily accessed. This also provides an easy format for communication with teachers. They are still accepting applications. If there are no seats available, students are placed on a waiting list. To apply online, visit the school’s Web site to apply to the school that is most convenient for you.

Quick bits Science Center Thinks Those “A’s” In Science Are Worth Something New ‘“A” for Science’ report card program is rewarding budding Einsteins with free admission Julia Bramham, 5 (left) and Daniel Bramham, 8 (right), with their grandmother Nancy March (center), come to the Science Center to cash in on free admission of their ‘A’-mazing grades.
Remember the days of getting $1 for every “A” on your report card? What if your child’s science grades were instead valued at more than $10 every time they received an “A” in their science class? Furthering its goal of serving as the area’s headquarters for informal science learning, as well as fulfilling its mission of “opening every mind to science,” the Science Center will celebrate all report card “A’s” in science with free admission, as long as the brainy budding scientist brings along a paying regular adult. That free admission comes to $10.50 for kids under 12 years, and $14 for middle and high-school students age 12 and over. There are no limits on the number of students per household who can receive the free admission and no limits on the number of visits for each child. “In other words, if mom brings in all three of her children and each one has an “A” for the last grading period,” said Science Center CEO Lew Crampton, “all three kids can get into the museum for free as long as mom buys a ticket and each child shows us their report card. And they can come back and do the same thing the
following day!” And the offer isn’t limited to Palm Beach County students. It’s open to any student, as long as they present the report card and the adult. Adult admission is $14. The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is currently hosting Mazes through September 14, 2014, in its newly expanded exhibit hall. The exhibition winds its way over 9,000 square-feet with more than 60 puzzles, and leads guests on an adventure through a series of interactive brain-teasers, 3-D puzzles and full body games. In addition to Mazes, the Science Center features an 8,000 gallon fresh and salt water aquarium with local and exotic marine life, a digital planetarium, conservation research station, Florida exhibit hall and an interactive Everglades exhibit. So dig out those spring grades and bring your report cards to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, located at 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach. For more information on the “’A’ for Science” program, please call 561-832-1988 or visit www.sfsciencecenter.org. | PBParenting.com | June 2014
