So we couldn’t pass up a chance to meet and talk to local NFL Football star, Brandon Flowers, about his new role off the field, fatherhood. Even though Brynn was only 2 months old, you could tell how much his world had been changed forever. It was such a pleasure to get to know such a down to earth family. Read the whole story on page 8. FROM DEFENSE TO DADDY Fathering from the perspective of NFL Star Brandon Flowers BY FELONICE MERRIMAN AND MATT STETSON When you talk to a man about being a father and ask what the toughest part is about being a dad, many will say career and home balance. They need to work to provide a paycheck while also wanting to be with their children. From the plumber to the stock broker to the doctor to the NFL Player, they all have the same feeling. They all have to find that balance between work and home life. PB Parenting recently spent the afternoon with Delray Beach local and NFL star, Brandon Flowers, and his family at the beautiful Eau Palm Beach

Resort & Spa. Flowers is spending his first football season as a new father to his brand new daughter, Brynn. We discussed his experiences so far and what challenges he foresees for the future and how he is trying to find that ever important work/life balance. Brandon Flowers grew up right here in Delray Beach, where he attended high school and played football. Even though he plays cornerback for the San Diego Chargers, his still loves his hometown and has deep family and charitable roots here. He is starting his
Y
8th football season and 2nd season with the Chargers. He recently signed a four year contract with them. This year has been a big change for Flowers, having to adapt to the demanding schedule of a newborn baby. “Its been hard - we have been taking shifts at night. I would take from 9 PM -2:30 AM.,” Flowers said. “I wasn’t getting a really good night of sleep. I would go in for my early morning workout and really feel it.” Recently he had to spend a week away from her so he could get ready for camp, “I missed her like crazy. It was hard being away from my child. Being away from her that week, she had grown so much while I was away.” Luckily, Flowers has incredible support from his family who are thrilled he now 15_0507_PBZ_SafariNights_PBParenting.pdf 1 5/7/2015 has a baby. “They thought I was never going to have a kid.”
5:09:33 PM
Soon Flowers will be heading out to California to go to work. He is hoping that electronic communication will be enough while away. He can’t expect his family to fly out every week. He is looking forward to upcoming family days on the field. “Our team is very family orientated. Coach McCoy believes family is everything. They let kids play on the field. I can’t wait for the guys to see her in person. We are very close in San Diego. They can’t wait to meet her.” Flowers’ fellow players did give him a bit of advice. They warned him about lack of sleep, that babies grow up so quick and to enjoy the moments he has. When asked how being a father has changed his game, Flowers said, “I feel like it will change my performance for the better. I want to go out there and play harder so I can set up her future for the better. My future is secure and now If it happens let it happen on her own I want to set up hers.” terms.” Being a football star can sometimes shine a spotlight on your life. We asked Flowers how he wants to maintain a normal life for Brynn. “I want to protect her as much as I can. I am a down-to earth-guy that loves home cooked meals. I don’t want to put her on social media. I don’t want her to be known as Brandon’s baby. I don’t want that focus, I want to keep a lower profile.
What does the future hold for Flowers and his family? Flowers said, “Before I had a child, I wanted to play until the wheels fall off. I love the game but now, even though I had surgery on my shoulder, sometimes it hurts when I hold my baby. I am now in my 8th year, if I go to 12 years, I want to be able to have fun with my kids. I want to play without my knees hurting. I want play catch with my kids. I will still be young when I retire so I can enjoy life without pain.” Even though Flowers hasn’t been a dad for long, he has wisdom beyond his years. While he is devoted to being a father, he recognizes that he should connect with the people in his life and spend time together, especially with Brynn’s mother. “You don’t want to put your life on hold. It is important to go out to a nice dinner and movie, and do
things that made you fall in love in first place. Staying connected and not just co-parenting are so important in our relationship.”

Darling Daughters: Quick Tips for Dads to Connect With Their Girls BY BETH N. DAVIS Young girls need strong male role models in their lives. When a father shows a genuine interest in his daughter and treats her with respect, he sends her the message that all men should treat her in a similar manner. And they should.
women and what she should expect in the future. A good rule of thumb is to always treat your wife the way you want your daughter’s future husband to treat her. You may not know it, but she is watching you for cues on how to behave with men.
Dads want the best for their little girls and when they connect with their darling daughter, they are gifted with the opportunity to give their girl the best parts of themselves. Whether you know a dad who needs a hand building his relationship with a little lady or are a father working to reconnect with their teenager, here are a few quick tips for dad.
Carve Out One-on-One Time Daddy/daughter dates are one of the best things you can do to connect with your daughter. Plan ahead, but be sure to include her in the process. If you make this special time a weekly or monthly occurrence, you will fall into a rhythm that makes you more relatable and easier to talk to. This is when she will start confiding in you and letting you into her world.
Get Involved Do you come home after work and immediately turn on the TV or flip on your iPad? Perhaps you don’t get home until after your kids are in bed. Whatever the case, now is the time to re-evaluate your priorities. By getting involved with at least one aspect of your daughter’s life, you will see a change in how connected the two of you are. Coach her soccer team. Have dinner with the family a few times a week. Get to know the other dads in her social circle. Making the time to get involved is a great first step. Respect Her Mother The way you treat your daughter’s mother (and your own mother) will speak volumes to your little girl about how men treat 12 June 2015 | PB Parenting |
Hug Her No matter how old your daughter gets, never stop showing her affection. Hugs may not seem welcome when your teenager is giving you the cold shoulder, but studies show that the teenage years are the most formative time for a young girl’s self-esteem. She needs those hugs. Tune in to the Details Girls today have a lot going on and parents can sometimes be clueless to the details of their daughters’ lives. Do you know who her close friends are? What books she is reading? What TV shows and celebrities she is interested in? Tuning in to the little details
of your daughter’s life will make her feel like an important part of your world. Follow Up If your daughter comes to talk to you about a problem, check in with her about it after the fact. Nothing says “I care” more than interested follow up on previous discussions. Follow up lets her know that you were listening to her and will make her more likely to confide in you in the future. Whether your daughter is young and you are working to lay a foundation for the future or she is a teenager or older and you are looking to repair a distant relationship, connect with her today and you will both enjoy the benefits of a strong relationship for years to come.

10 Simple Ways To Stay Organized At Home BY MEGAN WOOLSEY
I am the mother of six-year-old triplets and a very high-energy ten-year-old daughter. Everyone I meet always wants to know, how do you do it? One word: organization. When the triplets were babies I had to write out their feeding, sleeping and pooping schedule on a graph just to make sure that everyone’s needs were met. These days, my organizational needs have changed. With four children in school, what organization looks like for me is a system of having a place for everything, and everything in its place. I have created a list of organization tips that have helped in raising our four children. In sharing these tips, I am not asserting that I have a 100 percent success rate at completing any or all of them each day. But, I can attest to the fact that when I do follow through with these ten organizational tips, my life becomes a lot easier. 1. Wake Up 30 Minutes Before the Kids My husband has been suggesting I implement this tip for years, but sadly, I am not a morning person. Yet, when I do follow this little gem of wisdom I am able to take a shower and make my coffee before the kids march down the stairs like a herd of elephants. This technique just starts the day off on the right foot. 2. Do one load of laundry every day You may be thinking, “yeah, but she has a family of six and I only have a family of
14 June 2015 | PB Parenting |
four and so I don’t need to do laundry everyday.” Wrong. If you do not keep up with a load of laundry a day, those clothes accumulate and then you end up with five loads of laundry on the weekend. That is just not right. 3. Lay children’s clothing out before bed My kids are terrible at picking out their own outfits. I find it extremely helpful to have each child help me lay out an outfit each night and require them to put the outfit on before they come downstairs for breakfast. This is a time saver and hassle reducer. 4. Meal planning Meal planning, that nasty little chore that falls right between a visit to the dentist and constipation in my book. Meal planning takes time, preparation and organization. What it lacks is everything that comes so naturally in life like laziness and spontaneity. Yet, when I meal plan, I feel like supermom. Meal planning not only saves time during the week, but it saves money because you buy only the ingredients you need for the week. Here are my preplanned meals for this week: Monday: Beef Stew, Tuesday: Baked Ziti and Chicken, Wednesday: Calico Bean Pot, Thursday: Tacos, Friday: Homemade Pizzas, Saturday: Chicken Nuggets and Baked Beans (since mommy and daddy are going out), Sunday: Spaghetti Bolognese.
My children help me prepare a part of the meal some nights. They love to put together salads and it saves me a lot of time. Sundays are cook with mommy days and I trade off letting one of my children find a recipe, plan it out and then help me make it. 5. Have children pick up toys before bed By the end of the day, the playroom and bedrooms are both disasters. Sometime before bed we have the kids clean up their own mess so we can start the next day off clean. Having kids pick up their own toys teaches them responsibility and organization early on. Some nights we forget to pick up the playroom, but bedtime blitz is a good habit to get into. 6. After school goal chart We put together a chart so our children would have some boundaries, guidance and direction when they get home from school. We all have learned by now that kids NEED boundaries and direction to be happy and successful individuals. If the children

complete their after school responsibilities WITHOUT COMPLAINING each day of the week, they earn ten Lego dollars. 7. Divide and conquer after dinner responsibilities For 10 years, my husband and I have been in charge of dinner dishes. Recently, we have divided up all the dinner dishes tasks for the children to do each night. The 10-year-old rinses dishes and puts them in the dishwasher. The 6-year old triplets clear the table, wipe the table down and vacuum. My husband and I sit in the family room with a glass of wine and remind each other how long we have been waiting for the day when our children would help around the house.
8. Move coats and shoes to the garage It only took us eight years to figure this out, but now that we have discovered this little organizational delight, our lives are changing for the better. For years we have struggled about where everyone would house their shoes and coats. Kids shoes were shoved in a cubby system that crowded my laundry room. Coats were hung haphazardly on a coat rack by our front door that one of the kids would tip over on themselves from time to time. My husband stopped by Home Depot and picked up a fairly inexpensive shoe shelf and coat hanging system. Everything has been built on a small person’s level so there will no longer be an excuse when I see coats on the floor and shoes scattered everywhere.

9. Duct Tape Parking Spaces My husband and I devised a plan to create parking spaces for the four bikes and five scooters we have. We went to Home Depot and picked out a duck tape for each child in the style that matched their personality and created parking spots using their special duck tape so there is never a question of where to put their bike away. 10. Sort snail mail As soon as I lay eyes on our snail mail I immediately begin to sort through it and recycle what we don’t need. I have a place for my bills, a place for my catalogues and a place for my coupons, etc. This is helpful because if you do not sort through mail each day you will end up with a gigantic pile of paper on your dining room or kitchen counter within days. A place for everything and everything in its place. The most important part about being organized is having a proper place for everything in your home. Everything from toys and school backpacks to homework and outerwear all need a place to live. If you don’t have a place for something, find one. If you can’t find a place for something in your house, then it isn’t that important and you should probably donate it. If you want your life to feel more organized, your home is a great place to start. Megan Woolsey is the author of the blog, The Hip Mothership. Summer: Ideal Time to Tackle Attention and Behavior Issues and Prevent Summer Slide While summer may seem like a built-in “breather” for kids, the summer months can actually be an ideal time to regroup and get reinvigorated for the coming school year. If your child is struggling in school, social situations or even with family interactions, sitting out for the summer could be more harmful than helpful. Studies show that students lose up to three months of academic progress in what has become known as the “summer slide.” These same students can also lose gains they have made in behavior modification or adherence to routine that can improve ADHD symptoms. However, when kids attend summer programming designed to increase their abilities, the opposite can happen; making kids better equipped for the new school year! This summer, you can help your child tackle their challenges and be ready to start the next year AHEAD, instead of behind. You may wish to schedule a comprehensive assessment to gauge your child’s overall function in key areas. At Brain Balance Achievement Centers, their assessment is an objective and quantifiable measurement of each area of function—motor, sensory, behavioral, social, emotional, and cognitive—allowing them to better understand your child’s unique challenges. The assessment consists of testing more
18 June 2015 | PB Parenting |
than 900 functions and is performed in a single session. The testing results help them to create a comprehensive, fully individualized program to address your child’s unique challenges. As a parent, you will understand exactly why your child may excel at some tasks and struggle with others and how this leads to the problems that you and your child struggle with every day at home or school. The report will provide you with a complete understanding of your child’s behavioral, social, and academic skills. They will also explain in detail what can be done to help reduce or eliminate these problems, resulting in long-term improvement in academics and behavior. If you could give your child an academic advantage next fall, wouldn’t you do it? The non-invasive, drug-free Brain Balance program can offer your child the help they need to improve their attention and behavior issues, making school work less of a burden and bringing peace back to your family interactions. Find out how your child can benefit from Brain Balance - schedule a comprehensive assessment today at their Lake Worth center. Call (561) 429-4420 or visit brainbalancecenters.com.
10 Ways To Prevent Summer Slide 1. Read EVERY day (for at least 20 minutes)! It doesn’t even have to be books, you can read newspapers, magazines, ebooks. Most libraries have a wonderful summer reading program with incentives and rewards for books read over the summer. 2. Plant a garden. Your child will gain responsibility and pride as they watch their plants grow and thrive. 3. Cook with your children. This is one of the best ways to integrate math, reading and following directions. Let your child design the menu too! Help your child put together their favorite recipes in a cookbook. 4. Take a field trip to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, The Palm Beach Zoo or local park with walking trails. Keep a journal about your travels. 5. Learn a new word each week! Hang it on the fridge and see who can use it the most times throughout the week. 6. Enroll in a quality summer program that will provide your child with opportunities to build their critical thinking skills. Schoolhouse Children’s Museum and Learning Center offers S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) programs, cooking classes, story time and more! 7. Play quick games with flashcards like Math War or Concentration to keep math skills sharp. 8. Listen to Audio Books during your road trip. 9. Take pictures and make a summer scrapbook. 10. Enlist a tutor to stay on top of learning. Great local resources include Kumon, Owl Tutors, Sylvan Learning, Mathnasium and Tutor Doctor.
