PB Parenting
Greetings, Happy Summer! You have survived another school year!
Volume 5, Issue 6 | June 2016
Summer is one of my favorite times. It means mornings not waking up at 6 AM to start the early school rounds. Summer is a little easier. I get to enjoy a later start time. Perhaps I can even savor a cup of coffee on the couch. However, with three kids under my roof, summer can be a little bit of a challenge keeping them all happy! Some weeks they go to summer camp but some weeks they have “camp mommy”. It is definitely a balance on those weeks trying to find something all three kids (ages 4, 7 and 11) agree on. To keep my sanity we always have an outing every day. Sometimes a short jaunt down to our favorite splash pad. Sometimes it can be a day trip down to Fort Lauderdale or Miami. PB Parenting wants to help you have some fun this summer and has put together a Kickoff to Summer contest package! You can win a FULL WEEK of summer camp at Breakers West, a Family Four pack to South Florida Science Center & Aquarium and the Palm Beach Zoo, four tickets to Monster Jam at the BB&T Center on August 13 or 14, enjoy 4 hours of kayaking or stand up paddleboarding for two at Jupiter Outdoor Center plus 4 Summer Savings Passes. This provides unlimited admission to 4 attractions throughout the summer -- Lion Country Safari, Miami Seaquarium, Museum of Discovery and Science and Zoo Miami. Check out page 18 for details and be sure to go to our facebook page to enter to win! Happy Parenting!

The 3 P’s for Water Safety Guide BY: LIZAIDA MEDINA, M.D. BOARD CERTIFIED PEDIATRICIAN
W
e all know that kids love water, from the beautiful beaches here in Palm Beach, to our own bathtub and pools. Water can be great fun for kids especially in summer, and, is a place where safety must always come first. Pediatrician Lizaida Medina, M.D. helps parents remember safety water tips with her 3 P’s Guide by focusing in how to prepare, protect and prevent. Preparing in advance helps ensure that you pack and have everything you need to make it a great water day. It includes an assessment of needs like sun protection, clothing, hydration, and safety flotation devices. •
It is recommended to avoid sun exposure for babies under 6 months to prevent sunburn, and, to dress them in lightweight long pants, long sleeved shirts and brimmed hats. If adequate clothing is not available, you can apply minimal sunscreen with at least 15 SPF (sun protection factor) to small areas.
8 June 2016 | PB Parenting |
•
If your child has experienced any allergic reaction after sunscreen is applied, his skin may be too sensitive to some active ingredients like PABA, oxybenzone, 4-isopropyldibenzoylmethane and cinnamates. In these cases, physical sunscreen such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide may be suitable.
•
Stress the importance of staying hydrated and create the habit of drinking plenty of non-carbonated, sugar-free, fluids throughout the day. Children shouldn’t wait until they fill thirsty to drink water.
•
Make sure your child knows never to dive into water without an adult checking first the depth of the water and for underwater objects.
•
Swim lessons are highly recommended for kids. You can start getting children acquainted with water at six months of age. As an adult, learning CPR is great too.
•
Blow-up “floaties”, toys, rafts and air mattress should never be used as life jackets or life preservers. Make sure your child uses a life jacket that is the right size and is approved by the US Coast Guard and tested by Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
Sun Blocker™ Romper
Protection of your loves ones involve safety measurements during the activity to avoid preventable injuries. •
•
Designed to prevent harmful UV rays from damaging your baby’s skin. Rated Excellent UV Protection, the Sun Blocker™ Romper offers a chemical and lotionfree defense against the sun.
Always supervise children in and around water. Whenever children are in water, an adult should be less than an arm’s length away. This includes kids close to a bathtub, pool, spa or any other open standing water. You can designate an adult “Water Watcher” for a specific period of time.

distracted by talking on the phone, socializing, drinking alcohol, tending household chores, etc. •
Do not use a pool or spa if there are broken or missing drain covers to avoid suction and entrapment under water.
•
Provide your children with an approved personal flotation device whenever riding in a boat, fishing or near a body of water.
•
Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours and after sweating or swimming.
•
Keep a telephone, rope or shepherd’s hook poolside in case of an emergency.
Prevention While taking preventive measures you are protecting your children and the children in our community.
•
You and yours kids should shower before getting in the pool; this removes most of the dirt on your body that uses up pool chemicals.
•
If you’re at the pool for the day, build in a break for kids at least every hour. Take that time to go to the bathroom and change diapers and teach your kids never to pee or poop in the water. Don’t change diapers near the poolside as this poses a risk to spread germs.
•
Keep your kids out of the water if they are sick (diarrhea, runny nose, cough or pink eye). Remember, we share the water –and the germs in it- with everyone.
•
If you have a pool at your home, it should be surrounded by a fence that prevents direct access to it from the house, be at least 4 feet

Summertime
SLIM
DOWN BY: SAMANTHA G. CLARK
‘Tis the season for bikinis....or tankinis… or whatever I can fit comfortably in while still resembling some form of a bathing suit. However, I have decided to try and get into my best shape this summer and wear a… (gasp) bikini. So I met with Wellington’s fitness guru, Meghan Buser to find out how a busy mom like me can get bikini ready as soon as possible. She told me to try out her boot camp class before our interview, and let me just say: I will be sore tomorrow! This girl knows her stuff and my arms are shaking from fatigue even as I write this article. Meghan Buser is a mom of three and has been in the fitness industry for over 15 years. Her expertise is in personal training, group fitness and she also owned a local boot camp called, Moms Fit 4 Fun. More recently, you can find her teaching high intensity workouts at many local gyms in Wellington. Sitting down with Buser is a motivating experience in itself. She is a plethora of fitness knowledge but she also is humble and self-deprecating, which puts a fitness novice like myself at ease.
cardio machines without any results. Diet is most important in seeing those results you want. You must watch how many calories you consume in conjunction with exercise to burn the maximum amount of calories.
Buser feels to get in optimal shape you must understand that the key is 70% nutrition and 30% exercise. She sees people at the gym spending hours on

A safe and healthy way to lose weight is by burning 500 calories per day by diet AND exercise. She also says that moderation with your diet is important. She isn’t a fan of any fad diets or elimination diets. Buser says it is important to make a lifestyle change instead of going on a “diet.” She highly suggests the app: Fitness Pal because it allows you to track how many calories you consume and also takes into account the amount of calories you burn while exercising. A few dietary tips she recommends are: •
Opt for water over fruit juices and sodas. Eat fresh fruit instead of the juice. (ie. Fresh orange instead of a glass of orange juice)
•
Eat plenty of lean protein and fiber, both keep you feeling fuller longer.
•
Stay away from high carbohydrate meals and sugar. Eat complex carbohydrates like brown rice, quinoa and farro.
•
Eat healthy snacks throughout the day like apple slices, almonds, low fat string cheese and cottage cheese.
•
Drink alcohol in moderation, or save it only for the weekends. Alcohol can lead to countless empty calories.
A Modern Schoolhouse for Our Social World Grades 6-12
•
It takes the stomach approximately 20 minutes to feel full. So eat slowly and drink a lot of water in the beginning of a meal.
•
When looking at nutritional content, check calories first and then sugar.

Many moms hardly have any free time, and as a busy mom of four children I asked how can we get the most out of a workout in the least amount of time. Buser suggests HIIT workouts, or high-intensity interval training. HIIT training is an exercise strategy that alternates short periods of intense

Running is better with friends! Meghan Buser front/center with her friends at a recent race group she helped organize. cardiovascular exercise followed by lessintense recovery periods. She offered an example of a HIIT workout: •
Squat jump for 20 seconds, followed with bicep curls for 30 seconds.
•
High knees for 20 seconds, followed by shoulder presses for 30 seconds.
•
Jumping jacks for 20 seconds, followed by lunges for 30 seconds.
*Do each circuit 3 times. Consistency in workouts is important and Buser suggests working out 4-5 times per week. Muscles need time to rest and repair, so do not forget to have a rest day at least once or twice a week. Also, changing up your routine keeps your body guessing. She recommends running, spinning and kickboxing, which are her favorite forms of cardio, but also insists that weight training is just as important as cardio. She says it’s crucial to weight train and sculpt your muscles. “Lean muscle mass naturally burns more calories throughout the day. That’s is why men burn fat more easily than women because they naturally have more muscle.”
14 June 2016 | PB Parenting |
Now that we know what to do to get in shape and eat right, when do we find the time to actually workout? Buser suggests waking up and squeezing a short workout in before the house wakes up. However, that might mean waking up while it is still dark and for a person like me, that is just impossible. Late night workouts, after the house is asleep are just as good and accomplish the same weight loss. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter when you work out, just that you are consistently getting your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes. So that may mean waiting until after the kids are in bed, or sneaking in an at home workout during nap time. Whatever works for you, works for your overall health. Buser suggests joining a gym (if possible) where the kids can enjoy some play time in the babysitting area and you can enjoy your free time and also get in your workout. If the gym is not an option, there are many workout groups that encourage moms to bring children along with them. The Fit Mom’s club is a boot camp style group that meets on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at Village park in Wellington and children play while moms have a work out. Owner, Sarah DeHart plans a different strength training and cardio workout every time and also plans fun events throughout the month in an effort for moms and their children to socialize. Deprivation does not mean dieting. Buser stresses the importance of still enjoying food, but just making healthier choices. Spaghetti squash or zuchinni noodles are an excellent alternative to using pasta or spaghetti as a base. Buser recommends trying cauliflower rice as a rice substitute. (I tried the one from Trader Joe’s and have to say, it was delicious.) Instead of using bread when making sandwiches or wraps, she says to use Romaine leaves. Remember, moderation is everything. If you are going
out to dinner and plan on having a calorieladen meal, try to have a healthier lunch. Buser offers this final advice for people just starting a new fitness regimen, “Be consistent with your diet and workouts and don’t compare yourself to others. Everybody is different and every BODY works differently.”

Enriching Summer Routines That Increase Learning & Prevent The Summer Slide BY CHRISTINA KATZ Let me guess. Your kids are going to be around at least part of the summer? Maybe they are going to camp or day camp or a workshop or summer school here and there, but some of the summer they will be home with no structured activities. Yikes. Your first instinct might be to give them the summer off, but be careful. They may be tired from being busy all school year but kids recover quickly. Within 48 hours of summer, you will be wondering what the heck you were thinking if you let them clear their summer schedules. But if you did, never fear, because I have a plan for you that works during summer or over any school break. Put this vacation enrichment routine into effect on the first weekday of vacation and watch your child go from listless and unmotivated to enthusiastic and engaged. Believe it or not, you can prevent the summer slide with an at-home summer enrichment program of your own making. Issue A Reading Challenge. Your child’s brain will definitely turn to mush if you let them do nothing but play video games and watch TV all summer. So sign them up for an age-appropriate summer reading challenge 16 June 2016 | PB Parenting |
through their school or local library or even create your own. We buy our daughter eight age-appropriate reading-challenge books before school gets out. The rule is she must read for at least a half-hour on weekday mornings before she can do anything else. The half-hour often turns into an hour or even hours depending on the book. Keep your costs down by using the library or buying second-hand books or e-books. Ban Cell Phones In The AM. In our house, phones are viewed as a privilege, not a right. As long as we pay for them, we get to model healthy cell phone behaviors no matter what the other parents are doing. So we don’t use cell phones until noon, every day, even when it’s not summer. The idea is that Samantha could be doing something enriching or creative with her brain that does not involve staring passively into a screen. However, we make an exception if the screen is being used in pursuit of self-expression. So if she wants to look up fashions from different periods so she can render them more accurately in her fashion notebook, that’s allowable. We also permit a quick phone check first thing in the morning to wish someone a happy birthday or reply to a message.
Tackle Life-skill Projects. Life skills are often not taught in school and learning new skills can be a fun, shared experience between parents and kids. Examples might be creating a garden with a toddler or preschooler, learning to cook with an elementary school child, redecorating a room with a tween, or balancing a checkbook with a teen. What’s nice about having a life-skill project with each of your children every summer is that it’s something you can bond over. Selecting seeds together, shopping for food together, deciding on paint colors together, and visiting the bank together suddenly becomes a shared adventure rather than a mundane task. As parents, we know a lot, but we often don’t take the necessary time to share what we know. Summer is the perfect time to connect while pursuing age-appropriate training. Schedule Daily, Weekly & Monthly Chores. Your child is part of the family and therefore part of a team. Summer is not your only chance to reinforce this principle, but more free time can mean more help around the house if you play your cards right. Before summer begins, sit down and make a chores list for each child. Divide it up into daily, weekly, and monthly chores so kids can’t wiggle out of helping with big jobs like cleaning out the garage or washing the cars. Kids like to feel like they are graduating to more sophisticated chores the older they get, so make sure the level of difficulty of each chore matches each child’s aptitudes and abilities. Kids can feel proud of pitching in whether simply emptying the dishwasher daily, cleaning their room weekly, or doing yard work with the whole family every other week. Learn Something Fun. What if everyone in your home learned something new each summer that interested them? Satisfying their interests will likely enrich the whole family so go ahead and set a

date for a show and tell celebration at the end of the summer. Then look for summer learning opportunities through your child’s school, through the local library, YMCA, or community center, and even online. Video training series are available online any given day, just make sure you screen the instructor, website, and material for security and age-appropriateness. You can even help your kids create their own curriculum using books, videos, vocabulary, and a creative project. If you want to teach your kids that learning can be fun, put them in charge of learning a topic that motivates them and watch what happens. Start these vacation policies when your kids are young if you can, although they will create a more balanced summer even if you start today with teens. Kids love having routines and these strategies will quickly become the new norm. If you have company or go to someone else’s home, let the enrichment routine go
for the sake of being in and enjoying the moment. Routines create structure, which increase feelings of stability and security in kids. But don’t be afraid to bounce the routine in favor of an impromptu trip to the pond or lake or beach. Having summer enrichment routines offers the kind of balance parents need to create a happier, more peaceful summer for the whole family. Happy summering! Bonus Lessons That Come From Summer Enrichment Routines Other families have their own summer routines; and this is ours. • Books are portable. Kids can read in the car, outside in the hammock, or while lying on a beach. •
Summer is for fun, and this type of schedule allows for plenty of outings, sleepovers, and campouts.
