Water overflowed from the giant jet tub, sending toys, soaps and washcloths onto the bathroom floor. “I dove in expecting to find my 18 month old Jack at the bottom,” said Wellington father Howie Berkowitz. “It was the longest, most terrifying moment of my life.” Parents Howie and Sarah Berkowitz realized in that instant that swimming lessons could mean life or death. And that’s how Jack became one of thousands of local children who graduated from water survival skills class at the British Swim School in Wellington. The program impressed the couple so much that they became owners of the 11-year-old swim school. “We now have the confidence and peace of mind to know Jack can survive if he falls in the water,” Sarah Berkowitz said. “Every day another child learns to float alone and survive, we feel as though we have made a difference.” ‘It happened so fast.’ Berkowitz and his wife were enjoying a typical gathering of parents and friends. The clamor of children running through the house filled the air. “We were in the kitchen talking to the other parents when everyone realized it was a little too quiet,” Sarah Berkowitz said. “Right then, one of the children came running in and said, ‘Jack in the water! Jack in the water!’” Hearts sank and two terrified parents ran for the bathroom. This was every parent’s 8 June 2013 | PB Parenting |

Water Survival Skills Save Children’s Lives nightmare. In the swelling panic of jumping in the tub, no one noticed the soaked little boy had managed to perch himself on a ledge between a wall and the tub, trapped from escaping. When Jack spoke up, relief and tears flowed like water from the tub. “You hear about kids at the bottom of a swimming pool. This was a bathroom tub,” the father said. “We just couldn’t believe something like this could happen to us.” In fact: • Children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates, according to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). • Young children can drown in less than two inches of water. • Deaths from drowning for children under age five in Florida more than double the national average, according to the Florida Department of Health.
Like many of their friends, they had thought about swimming lessons for their child, especially since they live in South Florida. But Jack didn’t really spend much time in the backyard pool, and there just never seemed to be time. After Jack nearly drowned, they knew now was the time. Survival is more important than swimming. Water survival skills decrease the risk of drowning by 88 percent,

according to the CDC. One of the first lessons the instructor at the British Swim School taught Jack and his parents is that knowing how to do the freestyle stroke is not enough. Children must know how to survive in the water long enough to be rescued or save themselves. The back float is the most important survival skill because it enables all swimmers to rest, breathe and call for help. Babies as young as 3 months can learn to roll over on their backs. “As instructors, we teach survival skills before swimming. We ensure our students are water safe,” said Stephanie Bachar, the Aquatic Manager at the British Swim School in Wellington. “Teaching this way encourages confidence in the water and helps students develop into safe swimmers.” For more than 30 years, British Swim School instructors say they have refined the method of a gradual, gentle and fun learning process. Repetition and a few songs and games is also key to this training. Lessons are conducted in an indoor, heated saltwater pool. In a few months, Jack could jump in, roll on his back and float. He moved up to the Turtle One class, which focuses on introductory swimming skills for children who have mastered survival skills. “It was so amazing to see his progress,” said Howie Berkowitz. “Watching all the children learn how to save themselves had such
a powerful impact on the both of us that we had to become part of it all.” After taking over the British Swim School Wellington location, which is tucked into an office park by the popular Village Park, the Berkowitz’s put all their energy into spreading the word about the importance of water survival skills for children. British Swim School is pleased to offer the following swimming classes for all ages and skill levels: • Swimboree: ages 3 to 36 months with a parent. There is a maximum of 6 children per class. Focusing on water survival, babies and toddlers are taught through a structured program of songs, games and fun. This class introduces the baby to the water and teaches them to float independently on their back for the first time. • Young Minnows: 18 months to 3 years without parent. The instructor works oneon-one with each child following the same structure and emphasis on water survival as the Swimboree class. • Minnow: Over 3 years old introductory skills. Children participate in this small group class concentrating on fun, safety and independence in the water. • Turtle One: Introductory skills. In this small group, children focus on preparing for swim stroke classes by learning the basics of “face-in” breathing, and being able to demonstrate basic Freestyle and Backstroke, propulsion techniques.
• Turtle Two: Swimming skills. Swimmers focus on the correct arm, leg and breathing coordination for three stokes: Freestyle, Breaststroke, and Backstroke. Swimmers also get an introduction to the Butterfly. • Shark One: Advanced swimming skills. Swimmers refine their stroke and breathing techniques as well as increase stamina in all four strokes. The school also offers adult swim classes as well as private, semi-private and group lessons. Apart from the safety aspect, swimming is also a great form of exercise with overall health benefits for the heart. The school also sends graduates to the local swim team. And for fun, the Berkowitz’s added birthday party packages, which include lifeguards. British Swim School is located 3141 Fortune Way, Unit 21-22 • Wellington. After a long day of taking care of patients, making rounds, performing surgeries and more, these doctors and dentists come home to take care of their favorite patients - their kids! Dr. Brett Fried, DPM, FACFAS, of South Florida Foot & Ankle sees a lot of “boo boos” all day. Sometimes his 4-year old son comes into the office to “assist him”. He follows Dr. Brett Fried with his two his dad into the children. treatment room, puts on gloves and hands him a band-aid for the patient. He loves to play doctor. He will even hold the patient’s hand while they receive a shot. Dr. Fried’s passion to help others is what brought him into podiatry medicine. “It is very rewarding to help a child who has a foot condition that limits their ability to enjoy being a child.,” said Dr. Fried, “Correcting that issue whether it is by making shoe inserts or fixing it surgically and then seeing them function happily a child should is the best reward as a physician.” 12 June 2013 | PB Parenting |

Their favorite place in the office is the store room where they keep the toy chest, toothbrushes and toothpaste. Dr. Field tells us that every time they come by they seem to missing a few items! Family Beach Day Essentials 5 Ways to Reduce Stress and Increase the Fun BY SARA KENDALL
Pis acking up and heading out to the beach a favorite excursion for many families.
The chance to play and relax in the sand gives a family important together time. With just a little planning you can keep a beach day from turning into work, and avoid some of the unexpected annoyances that can dampen a good time. To have more fun and fewer hassles, here are five tips to incorporate into your planning to help make your family’s beach day more enjoyable for everyone. Protect In spite of the fact that we literally would not exist without it, the sun is no friend to our bare skin, so take the necessary precautions. Choose a UVA/ UVB protection, water–resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater. Apply a thick coat at least 15, and preferably 30 minutes before heading out in the sun. This will give it time to soak into your skin, maximizing protection. Reapply every 2 hours, after swimming or after you have worked up a sweat. Don’t forget those lips! Use a lip balm with a SPF of 30.

Shade In addition to sunscreen, Having an umbrella or tent on hand is also useful for those brief moments of rain we experience in South Florida! These items provide sun shade and protection from rain; a great multi-purpose item to pack! The less we carry, the easier going to the beach will be. Other items to pack are hats, long sleeved shirts and sunglasses. These are key items to reduce the chance of getting sunburnt or to cover up with if a family member has gotten a bit too much sun. If your little ones are resistant to sunglasses, a wide brimmed hat is a good option. Refuel The constant heat and never-ending activity drains everyone. Take time to cool off and replenish. Stay hydrated by keeping everyone sipping on fluids. Having plenty of portable, healthy snacks to fill empty tummies will maintain everyone’s energy level and keep your kids smiling.
Eliminate Stinging saltwater is a painful eye irritant for children hitting the waves. Masks and goggles are a great way to reduce complaints from frustrated kids. Bring extra pairs, in case a strap breaks or they happen to float away in a big wave. Having some saline handy to rinse irritated eyes will aid in clearing away the unpleasant saltwater. Simplify Reduce unnecessary lugging by shrinking the amount of toys. Let the sand and waves be their entertainment. For kids ready to hit the waves, a boogie board or an inflatable boat are fun choices. A couple of small buckets and a few shovels can provide hours of creative activity for kids of all ages. Let the Good Times Roll A little planning goes a long way. Take the time to craft a smart game plan for your family’s beach day. You’ll score big points with your kids when you can instantly solve a lot of their biggest complaints. Plus, you will have more time to breathe in the salty air, feel the cool sand between your toes, and let gentle waves lap at your feet. Make your family’s beach day one to remember for the good times. Sara Kendall is a freelance writer and mother of two daughters. (Sources: American Academy of Dermatology)

Music Together is a delightful, joyous approach to music-making with your child. For infants, toddlers, preschoolers and the adults who love them, Music Together offers families an opportunity to sing, dance and play rhythm instruments in a relaxed, playful, non-performance-oriented setting. It nourishes parents’ efforts to create a rich musical environment at home, regardless of their musical abilities. Classes are specifically designed to accommodate the unique learning style of the very young while being highly engaging to their adult companions. Music Together is based on the philosophy that all children are musical; you may be surprised to find that you are too! Classes offered Tuesdays at 9:30 and 10:30 am and Wednesdays at 9:30 and 10:30 am. Why Family Travel is Important Experiencing different cultures, trying new foods and seeing images from the Internet come alive are great reasons to travel with your kids. Not only is it a great way to learn together, but a wonderful bonding experience. Family vacations are about quality time spent together away from the normal routines of daily lives. Overscheduling is the norm for today’s family. Work, school, sports, family events, and extracurricular activities have many families working at a deficit with their time and energy. Frankly, many families don’t spend enough time together. Going away together for a long weekend or a week brings families closer and gives kids a perspective that extends beyond their hometown. The Learning Curve Packing for the first time kids, tend to think they are moving, rather than going away for a short period of time. Kids tend to cram everything possible into a piece of luggage
36 June 2013 | PB Parenting |
BY SARA KENDALL without much thought. A good starting point is to have your children lay out what they want to bring. If you will be traveling by plane, let them know luggage space is limited. If you’re driving, let them bring along a couple of extra items they just want to have. Look over everything with them. Explain why something should go and something else should stay at home. After a few trips, they know the difference between necessities and luxuries. Be Flexible Some trips go better than planned and end up going without a hitch. Others are accompanied by logistical nightmares, language challenges and reservation snafus. When one of these unwanted occurrences happens, flexibility is the key to overcoming it. Approach it as a real-life teachable moment for your kids. This is a time when a family relies on each other, learns how to solve a problem and adjust expectations.
Go Slow Bringing along the kids will require an adjustment to how much ground you can cover in a day. Not rushing around and cramming everything into a day might actually enable everyone to see more. Kids notice things adults often overlook. Join them in a moderate pace and enjoy the small moments along the way. Make It a Crowd Pleaser There should be a balance between what the kids will enjoy and what the parents will enjoy. Everyone needs to get some of their wants met during their vacation. Have a conversation with your children about the importance of accommodating each other. Explain a vacation can’t be one-sided in either direction. It’s never too early to learn the art of compromise. No Matter Where You Roam Whether it’s a far-flung trip across the world or a simple excursion across town, kids build upon their base of knowledge. If you have the opportunity to take your kids to another country, they will be exposed to different time zones, gain a better understanding of different languages and world geography. Going local, you can visit ethnically different areas, stores and restaurants within your city
or across your state. It doesn’t matter how far you go, it is important to get your kids out there in the world. Reap the Benefits Kids gain an enormous amount of knowledge within the walls of their school. However, beyond textbooks, there is a big world out there waiting to be explored. There is so much to be gained from going places. There is a true value to hearing different languages, smelling exotic markets and interacting with people from a different country. Every experience builds upon the next one. Your kids will be making more connections with the world with every new experience they have. You may find yourself surprised when they connect something they are learning in school to a travel experience from a few years ago. Take your kids to new places, it will be worth the time and effort you put into it. Get your kids out there and start your family on the road to many shared memories and a greater understanding of the world. Sara Kendall is a freelance writer and mother of two daughters.
