THE ABCs OF DAY CAMP
26 points, topics and tips to consider before choosing a summer camp BY CLAIRE YEZBAK FADDEN The school year is more than half way through and many students are focusing on summer. Weeks of lazy days, no homework and sleeping in. Parents, on the other hand, don’t want to see their sons and daughters lose momentum for learning and waste away weeks from June to August. How can these two worlds come together? They meet through the wonder of summer camp. Campers can enjoy the camaraderie and fun of making new friends and hanging out with old friends. Parents can relax knowing that their child is spending part of his summer being challenged, learning and being entertained. As you prepare to make your summer camp decisions, consider these points, listed in A to Z fashion. Some are more challenging issues; others are just the details. No matter which, they all merit your consideration to ensure a great summer experience for your camper.
8 March 2015 | PB Parenting |
Ask About Accreditation. Organizations like the American Camping Association (ACA) offer accreditation to camps as a way for parents to know that they selected a camp that has met appropriate standards and counselor/camper ratios. Begin at the Beginning. Talk to your child about what interests them. Find out what type of camp they want to go to and how long a day they are able to put in. If they have always wanted to learn Tae Kwon Do, summer camp may be the perfect time to let them sample this sport before making a longer commitment. Choices. Specialty day camps give children an in-depth introduction to something new that interests them. Many camps specialize in everything from drama to sea life to soccer. Children could be filling their summer days doing things like playing the violin or learning to place a corner kick. Your child might be a natural on the uneven bars or the balance beam. In this issue of PB Parenting starting on
page 14 you’ll find a large selection of local camps to choose from. Don’t Despair. Even though there are hundreds of options for day camps (not to mention sleep-away camps) in Palm Beach County, you’ll make a great decision. With just a few minutes of research, you can find great choices for your campers. Education. Send your child to a summer camp geared toward academics. Summer could be a great time to help your child catch up or leap ahead before the next school year begins. Focus on Fun. As parents, we want every experience for our children to be worthwhile and educational. “While camp can certainly be a wonderful time to improve grades, remember that it’s summertime,” says Y camp counselor Shawn. “Fun should rule during June, July and August.”

Get Acquainted. Many camps have brochures that are free for the asking. These may help you narrow the field to maybe one or two choices. Another great opportunity is to meet camps in person at PB Parenting’s Summer Camp Expo on March 29th from 11 AM -2 PM at the Palm Beach Outlets. High-Tech Technology changes every day. Summer camp can be a good opportunity to get your child up to speed. Some camps offer hands-on experiences in technology to enhance what’s being learned during the school year. “Kids can be filming and editing digital movies, programming robots and creating their own 2D and 3D video games,” says Karen Thurm Safran, Vice President of Marketing for iD Tech Camps. Information, please. There’s lots of online information. Most camps have their own Web sites geared to answer your questions. For a more general start, visit the American Camping Association’s Web site, www.acacamps.org or the National Camping Association, www.summercamp. org or www.pbsummercamps.com. Jump, run, skip. Use summer camp as a chance to move your child away from the video games and off the couch. See if your son can develop a jump shot at basketball camp or have your daughter put on her ballet shoes and learn to pirouette. Keep it simple. It’s not necessary to have every minute of the summer break scheduled with activities. Allow your child to choose a few he especially enjoys and leave some time for just hanging out. Look ahead. Save the information and research you did this year. You’ll be looking for new, exciting opportunities for next summer before you know it. Museums. When it’s summertime, a visit to the museum takes on a different feel
10 March 2015 | PB Parenting |
than a school field trip. Museum camps can turn kids on to archeology, astronomy and the prehistoric world in ways that no sixth grade teacher can. Don’t miss this chance to have your child dig for dinosaur bones or experiment with chemistry – all under the guise of summer fun. New Friends. “We find that parents want to give their children opportunities to build friendships and make connections with others. Summer camp is the perfect place to do that,” says Rebekah Granquist, director of program development for the YMCA of San Diego County. Outdoor Offerings. Horseback riding, water polo and bird watching may be unique ways for your child to experience the great outdoors. Take advantage of the inviting summer weather and choose a more traditional day camp whose program will reflect an outdoor educational experience. Play to Your Strengths. Camps give children an opportunity to hone an existing skill or talent. “I really like the way my son and daughter were able to improve their soccer skills,” says Diane, mother of 8-year-old Joshua and 10-yearold Brittany. “We sent them to a sports camp last summer. It really broke up the long summer and gave them a place to run off that extra energy,” she says. Questions to ask. Here are a few questions to get you started: How far away am I willing to drive to take my child to camp? How much of a budget can I dedicate to camp experiences this summer? Do I want to send her to a camp that has lots of kids? Do I want her day to be completely structured or would she prefer a mix of structure and free time? Role Models. “Parents continue to look for ways to enrich the lives of their children,” says Granquist. Camp offers that
opportunity in a safe, fun atmosphere. “It’s also a way to be exposed to positive role models, both male and female,” she says “and reinforces good values like caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.” Schedules. The daily schedules of each weeklong day camp vary. Some run from early morning until late afternoon (with extended day care, if desired). Others offer a combination of half-day or full-day sessions. You can send your child for the entire summer or select a few weeks here and there. Think Themes. Day camp keeps up with the trends and newest interests of their campers, too. Some novel camping themes you’re likely to see this year include scrapbooking and movie themes like: “Frozen” and “Sponge Bob”. Unique memories. Your camper has never repelled down the side of a rock wall. He talks about wanting to see what it’s

like to balance on a wakeboard? Maybe your daughter wants to try her hand at magic. Camp takes unusual learning opportunities and turns them into unique summer memories.
adds. “If you daughter doesn’t want to play soccer, you’re better off enrolling her in a different camping experience. Everyone will be much happier by the time the end of the summer rolls around.”
Variety. Here’s a chance to sample lots of different activities, sports and disciplines. If your child isn’t hooked on any one topic, a camp that has a different theme each week may be just what you’re looking for. Water, water everywhere. Surfing, snorkeling, kayaking and swimming are just a few of the water-related camp experiences available for kids. Summer can be the perfect time to introduce your child to the wonders of the ocean and make sure they are water-safe as well.
Zoo and Beyond. Summer is a great time for your child to learn more about the animal kingdom. Their quest for learning about creatures great and small, on the land or in the sea, is encompassed in a perfect setting.
eXamine and eXplore. Summer camp is a chance for children to exercise their inquisitive side. Being in an environment unlike home and school gives kids a chance to examine and explore new surroundings. Your choice or your camper’s. “Too often we get kids in camps that their mom or dad wanted them to attend,” says camp counselor Shawn. “I can’t stress enough the importance of choosing camp activities that your child is interested in,” he
Making a decision about which summer camp to have your child attend may not be as easy as ABC. As long as you keep your goals in mind – entertainment, education, fun – you’re certain to make the best selection for your camper. So, sit back and relax. Once again June will quickly turn into September. You can take some comfort in the fact that you’re providing your child with a challenging summer. And you won’t be listening to any complaints about being bored. But you’re still likely to hear: “Hey mom, where’s my backpack?!” Award-winning freelance writer Claire Yezbak Fadden is the mother of a former camp counselor. Follow her on Twitter @ claireflaire.

It’s Time to Prep for Summer Camp BY ELIZABETH BRENNAN, MD, FACEP, MEDICAL DIRECTOR, AND CHARLES A. WELBORN, MD, MPH, FAAP, FACEP According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the summer camp experience “has proven to have a lasting effect on psychological development, including significant effects on self esteem, peer relationships, independence, leadership, values and willingness to try new things.” With that, children generally like to participate in group activities and share among themselves while at summer camp; therefore, it is not uncommon for ‘little’ epidemics of minor illness to sweep through camps. These may include conjunctivitis (pink eye), strep throat, stomach viruses, etc. While some of this is inevitable, the occurrences can be lessened in two ways. First, if your child is obviously ill, do not send him to camp. You will only help spread his illness to the other campers. Second, it is the camp’s responsibility to send home any child that is sick in order to limit the spread of the illness. What other health issues should you prepare for when sending your child to summer camp? Camps offer a

wide range of activities and almost all programs have some level of physical exercise. Combine this with the general enthusiasm of children and there are bound to be bruises, minor cuts, falls, and occasionally more serious injuries such as broken bones. The best medicine here is prevention: camps that stress proper supervision of play time and physical activities have lower rates of injury. In addition to these injuries, also consider the fact that your child may be susceptible to heat-related illness, especially in the high heat and humidity of the summer months. Make sure your camper has adequate hydration while at camp. If the camp involves lots of outdoor activity, make sure there is a plan in place to prevent but also recognize symptoms of heat-related illness, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which are dangerous conditions. If you are considering what camp may be best for your child, here are a few items to think about. Ensure the camp activities are appropriately matched to your child’s medical needs. For many
children, this may be as simple as Presented by Take a bite out of Summer... having a camp physical performed with Take aTake Bite aout of Summer… Presented by……… Biteatout of Summer… Sandoway House Presented by……… your primary care provider to validate at Sandoway HouseHouse at Sandoway Center their good health. Next, if the camp is a sleep-away camp, it should be able to provide basic medical care for a child with ongoing medical needs. Staff should be trained in basic medical first aid and CPR, and should be qualified to store and administer any medications your child will need while away from home. If your child attends a day camp, staff should have basic first aid training, CPR, and depending on your child’s needs, be able to administer necessary medications. Whatever the type of camp, it is very important that the camp staff is aware of your child’s medical needs so they can be proactive in anticipating those needs. The AAP guidelines offer specific and detailed information for camp administrators on preparing for the best and healthiest camping experience for both children and staff. Camp health officials need to prepare and maintain health care and vaccination records, emergency plans; and need to anticipate emergency scenarios and how they will be handled. The AAP says all camps should have written health policies that have been reviewed by a physician who specializes in children’s health, and all camp health care providers should be trained and understand the health guidelines, including plans for treating both major and minor illnesses and injuries. contacted before the start of camp to discuss emergency response times and plans of action. Parents should ensure the camp meets the needs of their child’s interests and skills, so it is important to match the interests of the child to the camp offerings. Keep in mind that homesickness is one of the most common things experienced by new campers, and parents can play a role in helping their camper to feel less anxious about being away from home and loved ones. Parents are encouraged to discuss homesickness openly with their child, demonstrating positivity about the upcoming camp experience. Involve your future camper in the process of choosing their camp and in preparing for camp. Parents are encouraged to have “practice” excursions for their young campers, where they will be away from home with friends or relatives. Frame the upcoming camping experience as being an exciting adventure that will help build positive feelings in the camper, rather than anxiety. To select the proper camp for your child, be sure to look at the mission and goals of the camp, speak with the camp directors, and discuss the possibilities with your child in order to find the best placement.

Brain Awareness Week Tips This month marks national Brain Awareness Week (March 10-16). This special weeklong focus on brain health began as an effort to recognize and promote the importance of brain research, but has grown to mark a time when people of all ages celebrate brain health.
Promote Speech Development in Young Children. Ask your child to tell you a story about the day. If they mispronounce words or stutter, encourage him or her to slow down and sound out each word carefully. Praise or reward the child for doing well to prevent frustration.
You may have heard about recent research on Functional Disconnection Syndrome, or when one part of the brain lags in development, and results in either a right- or left-brain deficit. Oftentimes children who face behavioral challenges or exhibit symptoms of a developmental disorder may have missed significant milestones in brain development that contribute to their daily struggles.
Get (Your Brain and Body) Moving! You’ve heard it before: kids needs to get up and get moving every day, especially those children with ADHD or other attention issues. Exercise combined with accuracy is a great brain and body workout! Try having a dance family dance competition, martial arts, hopscotch or HORSE basketball – any activity that encourages aerobic exercise, coordination and concentration can mean big benefits for these kiddos.
If some brain processes are underdeveloped, you can help improve neural connections and lay the foundation for proper brain development in your child. Brain Balance Achievement Centers in Lake Worth works with children and families to create an individualized plan to ease the symptoms of developmental disorders and promote positive social, academic and behavioral growth.
