10 Questions To Ask When Choosing A Summer Camp Looking for a camp that will offer your child a safe opportunity to develop new skills this summer? Start with the basics: Ask the director of any camp you’re considering how long it’s been operating and what licenses it has. You should be aware, however, that state licensing requirements vary widely, and in many cases, are minimal. If the camp is accredited by the American Camp Association, you can be assured that the day camp or sleepaway camp on your list has satisfied the nonprofit organization’s more than 300 standards on health, safety, facilities, programs and staffing. But many good programs are too new or too small to get ACA accreditation, which costs money and staff time. Even an accredited camp can be a poor match for your child if the camp’s “culture” doesn’t fit his temperament. That means a parent considering any program needs to ask lots of questions. Here are 10 to ask the camp director: 1. What’s the camp’s philosophy? Is it one you’re comfortable with as
8 March 2016 | PB Parenting |
a parent? Is it a good match for your child’s temperament? Is competition or cooperation emphasized? If it’s a camp run by a religious organization, what religious observances or practices are part of the program? If you’re looking at a sports camp that touts an affiliation with a celebrity athlete, how much time — if any — will the sports star actually spend there? 2. How does the camp recruit, screen and train its staff? Do counselors have criminal background checks? First aid training? 3. How many counselors are returning this year? The ACA says at most camps, 4060 percent of the staff returns. If the number you’re given is lower, ask why. How many campers return? Fifty percent is good, and more is better. 4. What’s the ratio of counselors to campers? ACA guidelines for overnight camps call for a 1:6 ratio for ages 7 and 8, 1:8 for ages 9-14; and 1:10 for ages 15-18. Day camp guidelines call for 1:8 for children ages 6-8; 1:10 for children ages 9-14; and 1:12 for ages 15-18.
5. How old are the counselors? The ACA recommends that 80 percent of the staff be 18 or older and that all staffers be at least 16 and a minimum of two years older than the campers they supervise. 6. What medical staff work at the camp and what backup facilities are nearby? While most states have regulations for camps, there is no federal oversight of camps’ health and safety. The ACA recommends that an overnight camp have a licensed physician or registered nurse on the site every day, and that day camps should have direct phone access. If your child takes medication, has food allergies or a chronic medical condition, be sure you are comfortable that the camp will be able to handle your child’s needs. 7. What is the camp’s approach to discipline and how does the camp handle conflicts between campers? Find out what the camp’s rules are and what breaches would result in a camper being sent home.

DAY CAMP CHECKLIST • Sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 45 • Insect repellant wipes and/or insect repellent wristband (do not send an aerosol can of insect repellant–the spray will sting if it gets in your child’s eyes.) • Bathing suit and towel • Water bottle filled with ice-cold water • Hat You should be comfortable that the camp’s practices are in line with your parenting practices. 8. What does a typical daily schedule look like? This will help you decide if your child will be happy with the level of physical activity or the amount of time devoted to arts and crafts. Ask how much freedom a child has to choose activities. 9. Will the camp be transporting the children? What vehicles are used and how often are they inspected? Who drives them and what training do drivers have?
• Sunglasses • Comfortable running shoes or closed-toe sports sandals WITH socks • Extra set of clothes (especially a pair of socks and shirt if they get wet from the rain) • Rain poncho (rolls up small) • Medication: All camps should have your child’s medical information on file. Having an extra note with details in their backpack and attached to their Prescription medication and/or Epi-Pen is helpful.
10. Ask for references. Finally and most important, get the names of parents with children the same age who have attended the camp. While it’s true that a director is likely to give you the names of campers who had good experiences, you’ll be able to get a fuller view of the camp by asking the right questions, says ACA President Ann Sheets.
• Food: Most day camps will provide lunch and snacks. If you pack a lunch it should be easy to eat on the ground. A sandwich (avoid peanut butter since most camps are nut-free), fruit and a juice box or water makes for a healthy lunch. Granola bars make an excellent snack. Some camps may have snack bars or vending machines. Notify the camp of any food allergies your child may have.
“Ask ‘Is there anything you didn’t like about the camp?’ And let your child talk to their child, too,” she says.
Optional: • Change purse with $1-$2 for snacks • Benadryl cream for itchy mosquito bites

Childhood Sleep Problems Can I have a glass of water? I’m afraid of the dark. There’s a monster under my bed.
•
Children can make up many excuses not to go to, or stay in bed. Some childhood sleep problems are caused by poor sleep habits, while others may be hereditary or symptoms of emotional difficulties. Fortunately, children typically outgrow sleep problems so they – and their parents – can get a good night’s rest.
Some childhood sleep problems called parasomnias, include night terrors, sleepwalking and sleep talking. Night terrors involve episodes of fear, flailing or screaming that can last a few minutes while the child is asleep. They affect only a small number of children between the ages of three and 12 and usually are outgrown by adolescence. Sleepwalking typically starts between the ages of four and eight. Children who sleepwalk may look like they are awake, but actually they are sleeping and may be at risk for injury by falling down stairs or opening windows. When sleep talking, speech is characteristically mumbled and unintelligible. Parents should not try to wake children up, but instead guide them back to bed or otherwise gently reassure them.
The amount of sleep children need gradually decreases as they mature. Newborn babies usually nap about 16 hours through the day and night, while teenagers need about nine hours of sleep per night. For many parents, getting their children to go to bed and stay there can be quite frustrating, but they can help put a stop to bedtime troubles by following these simple steps. • Stick to the same bedtime every night, even on weekends. • Turn off the television, video games and computer at least one hour before going to bed and start winding down with a consistent routine that includes brushing teeth, going to the bathroom and maybe reading a short story. • Make sure the place to sleep is comfortable. 12 March 2016 | PB Parenting |
Keep a low noise level in the house while the child is asleep.
Not getting enough sleep for children may lead to difficulties in school, anxiety disorders and behavioral problems. For more information about childhood sleep problems, talk with your doctor or call 866-904-9262 for a free referral to a pediatrician near you. Sending Your Child With Special Needs to Camp You’ve decided to send your child with special needs to camp this summer. But that’s just the first step — you can choose a camp designed just for kids with special needs or a mainstream camp where your child will be with kids without special needs. Once that’s decided, what can you do to get ready? Preparing Your Child — and Yourself If you haven’t visited the camp, get as much information about it as possible, including a description of the layout and a video, if the camp has one, and go over these with your child. Tell your child that you’ll be checking in regularly with the camp staff and stress that he or she can always let them know if his or her needs aren’t being met. Offer reassurance that you and the camp staff will take every precaution to make sure that all kids stay safe. Talk about the benefits of attending camp and what some of your child’s goals might be, such as to try a new sport, make new friends, or just enjoy a break from doctors’ appointments and therapy sessions. When kids are intimidated by the thought of attending a residential camp or an inclusionary camp, parents might
14 March 2016 | PB Parenting |
consider starting them in a day camp or a sports team for kids with special needs. This can give them the skills and confidence they need to feel comfortable about going to a residential camp. Start with regular sports activities and day camp. Then use a special-needs camp to get them used to being away before sending them to an inclusionary camp. Another option to consider is sending a child to camp with a friend or a sibling. If kids attend an inclusionary or mainstream camp, the buddy doesn’t have to have a special need. Going with a friend can reduce stress for both parents and kids, since kids with special needs and their camp buddies will be looking out for each other. Sharing Information With Camp Staff Some parents are reluctant to share too much information with camp staff for fear it will have negative repercussions for their child (for example, they may wonder if the camp will still take their child or if they’re setting their child up for failure). But good camps will want and need to know as much as possible — the more information they have, the better. Consult with your child’s doctor and other specialists, such as a physical therapist,
to make sure you give the camp director and staff all necessary information, and ask the camp staff if they have everything they need from you. You can help educate the staff by spending time with them and answering and asking questions before you drop off your child. This can be critical. For example, if your child will be attending a mainstream camp, you’ll want to make sure that everything is accessible for your child and that the staff understands your child’s needs. Many camps have paperwork you can fill out to share information about things like dietary and medical needs. And regardless of whether your child is going to a day or residential camp, you should give the staff a list of emergency phone numbers and email addresses, and make sure they know how to reach you at all times during your child’s camp stay.

support staff your child needs. If your child needs a therapist, you can have that person come in on a predetermined basis to provide care. Or maybe your child needs more intensive, round-the-clock care — ask the camp director what you can do to accommodate these special needs.
What to Pack Try to limit the special equipment your child brings, especially if it’s expensive or breakable. Kids going to a mainstream camp are likely to want to be like all the other kids, so do what you can to accommodate that desire. And mark or label everything with your child’s name to make it easier to keep track of belongings — that goes for everything from crutches to a retainer case.
Remember, however, that you may want to let your child have a vacation from therapy or other treatments. Before you decide to postpone any treatments, though, consult with your doctor.
If the camp hasn’t sent you one, you should call ahead for a list of recommended items. Every camp has different requirements. You also have the option to provide any
Dealing With Anxiety and Homesickness Many camps don’t allow direct contact between parent and child while the camp is in session — they do this to help the campers stay focused on their activities. This can be scary for parents of kids with special needs, which is why it’s important that you figure out, ahead of time, how you’ll get information about your child’s

status. Will the camp call you with updates or can you occasionally call or email the supervisor and camp staff? Like any parent of a camper, though, parents of kids with special needs can write letters to remind their kids that they’re loved and missed, and that they can’t wait to hear all about their campers’ many experiences. And just like any other child, your kid probably won’t want you to cramp his or her style while away at camp. The best thing you can do is respect your camper’s need for freedom and independence while enjoying a safe camp environment.

Teaching Kids to Say Sorry BY CHRISTA MELNYK HINES At first blush, teaching kids to apologize seems simple. You instruct them to say sorry to whomever they wronged and you move on. But, did your child only say sorry to appease you? Does she really understand what she did wrong? Teaching kids to apologize with sincerity helps them learn lessons in empathy, nurturing and forgiveness. And given the messiness of life, those moments requiring apologies tend to be plentiful for practice. Establish house rules. From an early age, clarify behaviors that are okay and those that are not to help youngsters hone their sense of right from wrong and develop strong social skills. “It’s really important to praise the behavior you want to see more of, like ‘thank you for asking before taking that toy from your brother,’” says Dr. Jane Sosland, child psychologist. “Then enforce consequences if they break the rules.”
18 March 2016 | PB Parenting |
And often that means an apology is necessary. Role model. Consider this common scenario: Junior grabs a toy from the hands of another tot at a playdate. Embarrassed in front of other parents, your first inclination might be to jump in, demand he give the toy back and apologize. “By immediately scolding him in front of other people, that embarrasses and shames the child without giving him time to reflect about the situation,” says Dr. Stephanie Mihalas, child psychologist. Instead model an empathetic apology. Mihalas suggests the following formula: 1. Apology statement: “Johnny, I’m really sorry that got taken out of your hand.” 2. Feeling statement: “You must feel really bad because you were playing with it.”

moment?), you show them that no one is above culpability. In turn, they have the opportunity to express forgiveness. Then work to correct your behavior.
“Eventually, what you hope happens is your child picks up implicitly based on how you behave with other people,” Mihalas says.
“The whole point about teaching kids to say sorry is so they can learn from their mistakes,” Sosland says. “If we are repeatedly saying sorry (for the same thing), we demonstrate that we are not learning.”
Practice skills. Rather than lecturing your tyke about what he did wrong, role play when you get home by asking him questions like, “I know you really wanted to play with that new toy that Bobby had, but what could you have done differently that wouldn’t have made him cry?” “By doing that you are teaching him positive tactics and skills,” Mihalas says. Show remorse for your mistakes. When you apologize to your children for mistakes you make (and who isn’t guilty of the occasional bad parenting
But only apologize if you are truly at fault. Instead of saying “I’m sorry” for a disappointment you had no control over, show understanding by saying something like: “I know. I’m sad that happened too.” Cool off first. A hasty “I’m sorry” in the heat of anger is rarely meaningful. Give your child time to calm down in her room and set a time limit for an apology, says parent coach Laura Murphy. For instance: “You are welcome to rejoin us once you apologize.”

Then, give her age-appropriate choices for how she would like to apologize. “Would you like to apologize with a hug or with your words?” or “Would you like to draw a picture or write a letter saying you are sorry?” Reinforce words with nurturing, corrective action. As part of the apology, help your child find actionable ways to make amends. For example, Murphy says: “’If you are going to call your sister names, I want you to say three nice things to her.’ Or, ‘You hurt your brother. Let’s get him an ice pack to help him feel better.’” “But I’m NOT sorry!” As every parent knows, there are two sides to every story and understanding what happened isn’t always obvious. Once emotions have simmered down, talk to your child and find out why she doesn’t feel like she should apologize.

PB Travels 25 Rides of Your Life at Florida Theme Parks Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom Park – image courtesy of Walt Disney World Resort
The more that goes on during a ride, the more we feel and the more willing we are to wait in line. Here are 25 coaster rides at Florida theme parks, for thrills you won’t soon forget. Spring Break is the perfect time to seek these thrills at local area theme parks. These days, thrill rides get your adrenaline pumping and tricking you into believing the impossible. Thanks to advancing technologies, one can play Quidditch with Harry Potter or meet angry dinosaurs. You can also test the limits of physical experience without putting yourself in real danger. A battle against Decepticons? Why not? A rock-n-roll blast-off with Aerosmith? Done. Here are some examples of the thrills you can find at Florida’s theme parks. Free-Falling For this thrill, check out the 150-foot Doctor Doom’s Fearfall at Universal’s Islands of Adventure or The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 58 March 2016 | PB Parenting |
BY CARRIE MCLAREN
Orlando. The Tower, which opened in 1994, drops riders 13 stories, brings us back up and drops straight down again, all in the dark. Falcon’s Fury at Busch Gardens Tampa takes guests up 300 feet, pivots so they are looking face-down at the ground and then drops at 60 miles per hour. Yikes! Lights Out When a drop or twist comes without warning, the resulting rush is even sweeter. From Space Mountain at Disney’s Magic Kingdom to Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey at Universal’s Islands of Adventure, dark rides rely on the element of surprise to intensify thrills. Many also feature lit scenes and visual effects. At the top of the list for dark coasters: Revenge of the Mummy at Universal Studios Florida. As if fire-breathing mummies weren’t enough to get the blood pumping, the attraction combines special effects with coaster speeds.
Another great dark ride is the aforementioned Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, which uses robotic arm technology to make it feel as though you are flying in and out of harrowing scenes from the movies. Also, don’t miss Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts in Diagon Alley where riders navigate underground vaults and battle villains Voldemort and Bellatrix. Shot out of a cannon No matter how you prepare for the sudden jolt associated with launch coasters, when it hits, it hits hard. One moment you are sitting still then electromagnets propel the ride car from zero to rocket speed. Glued to your seat and rendered breathless.

a hilly town. There are usually a lot of small drops throughout but no real belly flips until the big dive at the end. Among the super soakers are Splash Mountain at Magic Kingdom Park, the Jurassic Park River Adventure and Dudley Do Right’s Ripsaw Falls at Universal’s Islands of Adventure and Journey to Atlantis at SeaWorld Orlando. Little ones will enjoy a good soaking at LEGOLAND Florida’s Quest for CHI battling with water gun soakers. Kraken at SeaWorld Orlando – image courtesy of SeaWorld Orlando.
A little loopy Many of Florida’s premiere coasters feature signature loops. Get loopy on Kumba at Busch Gardens Tampa or Kraken at SeaWorld Orlando. For more flipping fun, don’t miss The Hulk at Universal’s Islands of Adventure and another thrilling favorite, the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Studios Florida where you can even choose your own musical playlist to listen to during the ride.
For an old school feel, check out TanganyikaTidal Wave and Stanley Falls at Busch Gardens Tampa, featuring smaller drops but a classic splash. No Sandals, Please On an inverted coaster, the feet dangle free. It feels like floating through open air and when the rides go upside down, all you see is sky. For this twist on the traditional coaster experience, visit Montu at Busch Gardens Tampa or Dragon Challenge at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. Flying High Manta at SeaWorld Orlando is Florida’s only flying coaster. Riders glide in the prone position through inversions at 56 miles per hour. The ride is designed to mimic the movements of a manta ray gliding through the sea. A New Dimension Transformers the Ride 3D at Universal Studios Orlando is one of the latest attractions to combine 3D effects with motion thrills.

Three-dimensional robots tower above riders, battling it out for the fate of the world. Incorporated seamlessly with the story, simulated lifts, drops and jerks make the experience feel deceptively real. The body moves around a lot on this one,
but for all that, the motion thrills are pretty tame. The height limit is just 40 inches to ride. It’s similar to Spiderman at Universal’s Islands of Adventure, but more immersive. Back to the Future Some theme park goers may recall the old Back to the Future simulator ride at Universal Orlando Resort. Well, that ride is long gone. Universal replaced it with the Simpsons Ride, which is the same type of attraction. These rides are great for mild thrills. The ride car moves around without ever really going anywhere.
The Simpsons Ride at Universal Studios Florida – Carrie McLaren for VISIT FLORIDA
The body gets moved from side to side quite a bit, so heed that heart, neck and back problems disclaimer. Classic simulators include Star Tours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Soarin’ at Disney’s Epcot. Another new simulator at Universal Studios Florida features the Minions in Despicable Me! Minion Mayhem, where you shrink down to minion size.
For a more intense experience, check out Mission Space at Epcot. The ride simulates the feeling of a space shuttle launch. It’s intense and a lot of fun. Car lovers, don’t miss going for a ride on Epcot’s Test Track where you’ll build a virtual car and then have the opportunity to be a ‘test track dummy’ and see how your car performs on the track. Life-like, exhilarating and quite a learning experience too.
