Community Cares Wellington girl with Leukemia needs blood donations
Piper Apfel, of Wellington, is only three years old and has been diagnosed with Leukemia. She was immediately given blood and platelet transfusions, and has started receiving chemotherapy after being delayed due to seizures. Piper needs blood and platelet transfusions on a regular basis for the next 2-1/2 years. If you or someone you know donates blood, please ask them to donate blood and platelets at one of the Community Blood Centers of South Florida locations. Make sure to tell them you are donating for Piper Apfel at Palms West Hospital. Platelets are only good for five days, so she needs committed donors to avoid prolonging her fight. Her parents and family are thankful for any way you can help their little girl. To stay up to date on Piper’s fight against Leukemia go to www.piperskeepers.com.

VIP Medical Weight Loss is now open in Wellington
VIP medical weight loss successfully utilizes a unique approach to losing weight. Their program combines cutting edge medical weight loss techniques alongside individually customized nutritional programs. Patients are guided through a weekly medical weight loss program with a typical 5-10 pound weight loss in the first week and up to 20 pounds within the first month. The impressive weight loss results however, are not what make the program unique. Each patient is viewed as an individual and a program is designed on a patient by patient basis. Patients are taught methods of eating to lose weight, as well as methods of eating to maintain their weight. This is accomplished by teaching patients how to eat real foods that they would typically eat in their daily lives. Patients are seen weekly, where their individual issues are discussed. Programs are then designed to address those specific issues. Once a patient has reached their goal weight, a plan is designed to slowly transition off of the program. Patients are then taught how to eat to maintain their weight on their own, so that they are not dependent on a program. Most weight loss programs are designed to keep people as life time members. This is a great business plan for the weight loss clinic; however it is not in the best interest of the patient. Patient’s need a program to lose their weight, however they require an education to maintain the weight loss. VIP Medical weight loss provides the tools necessary to maintain a healthy weight on their own, without being reliant on a program. For more info on VIP, call 561-429-3812 or go to www.vipmedicalweightloss.com to receive a complimentary consultation.

Sleep and Your Newborn Bringing home a newborn baby is one of
the most joyous times for new parents. But no matter how well you prepare for what to expect, it’s natural to have questions along the way. This is particularly true when it comes to how much sleep your baby should be getting. Is my baby sleeping enough at night? Is it normal that my baby sleeps so much during the day? While most of the time, the answers to these questions will vary depending on each child, there are certainly some basics that can help you determine if your baby is getting enough sleep. Does My Baby Have Normal Sleeping Habits? “Newborns babies sleep a lot, and that’s perfectly normal,” explains Dr. Jose Rosa-Olivares, Director of the Pediatric Care Center at Miami Children’s Hospital. “In fact, the average newborn will sleep between 16 to 18 hours a day.” However, since at this age, babies cannot tell the difference between day and night, waking up every few hours at night is also very common. “During the first few months,” notes Dr. Rosa-Olivares, “you should expect your baby to sleep in stretches of 3 to 4 hours at a time. Their small stomachs can’t hold enough formula or breast milk for very long, which is why they need to be fed every few hours, no matter what time of day or night it is.”
At first, these short stretches of sleep can be exhausting for new parents. Have patience and don’t try to force a baby into a sleep routine during the first few weeks. The good news is things should improve after the first few months. “At around 2 months most babies sleep between 6 to 8 hours at night,” says Dr. Rosa-Olivares. “Some take a little longer to sleep through the night, which is nothing to worry about. Establishing a bedtime routine after the first couple of months can also be helpful. A warm bath, a story or a soft lullaby before bed can be effective in helping your baby relax and sleep better at night.” If your baby is still having trouble sleeping at night by 4 months or so, you should talk to your pediatrician. “Also talk to your doctor if your baby seems overly irritable, or on the other hand, is difficult to rouse from sleep,” he said.
Where Should My Baby Sleep? During a baby’s first few weeks of life, many parents prefer keeping their child’s crib in their own bedroom. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that healthy infants should be placed to sleep on their backs rather than their stomachs. In fact, Pediatric Dentistry since this recommendation was made in Specializing in Dentistry forAdolescents Infants, and Children, Adolescents ecializing in Dentistry for Infants, Children, those with Special Health Care needs Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) 1992, and those with Special Health Care needs has decreased by over 50 percent. It is also Michael J. Roseff, DMD, Michael J. Roseff, DMD, LLC LLC recommended that babies sleep in their own diatric Dentist Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry cribs and not in the same bed with parents. Breastfeeding Tips for New Moms Breastfeeding has many benefits, but it can also be challenging – and sometimes
even frustrating – for new mothers. It is important to remember to be patient and try not to get discouraged. It is ok to ask for help from the maternity nurses or the hospital lactation consultant. The more often you breastfeed, the more milk your breasts will produce and the more comfortable it will feel to breastfeed your baby. “Breast milk is best for babies because infants who are exclusively breastfed for six months have lower risks of ear infections, diarrhea and respiratory illnesses,” states Anne-Marie Sawicki, international board certified lactation consultant at West Boca Medical Center. Since breast milk contains the optimum balance of nutrients, it is easier to digest than commercial formula, and the antibodies in breast milk help boost your baby’s immune system. In the long run, babies who are breastfed are less likely

to be overweight as a child and as an adult. Mothers who breast feed typically experience a delayed return of their menstrual periods, have a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancers, and may lose weight faster after giving birth. Sawicki gives breastfeeding tips to new moms by saying, “to get started breastfeeding, wash your hands and cradle your baby close to your breast, skin to skin, in a comfortable position. Use pillows for support if necessary. Make sure your baby’s mouth is wide open and he or she takes in part of the area around the nipple.” If your baby is latched on correctly you will feel a gentle pulling sensation on your breast and see a rhythmic sucking and swallowing pattern. It is not necessary to supplement with formula, if you feel that you are not producing enough milk feed your baby more frequently, your body will make more milk in response to your baby’s increased need to nurse. Once you have established a milk supply, you know your baby is getting enough breast milk if he or she has six to eight very wet diapers per day and gains about 4-7 ounces per week. Newborns typically nurse approximately 8-12 times per day during the first few weeks. Watch for signs that your baby is getting hungry, such as stirring, stretching, lip movements or sucking motions. Let your baby set the pace and thoroughly nurse from one breast until it feels soft (about 15
to 20 minutes). Try burping your baby before offering the second breast. If your baby is not hungry, start the next breastfeeding session with the second breast. You may feel some tenderness at first, but breastfeeding should not be painful if latched on correctly. If you are experiencing any tenderness express some breast milk and let that dry naturally on the nipples and change bra pads often between feedings to keep them clean and dry. You can apply ultra-purified lanolin after feeding to sooth your nipples and speed up the healing process. Remember to wash it off before feeding your baby. Your baby will eat what you eat, so avoid alcohol and caffeine, eat a healthy diet and drink lots of fluids. Get plenty of rest and don’t smoke. Take medications only with your doctor’s approval. For more information about breastfeeding and West Boca Medical Center’s maternity services, including the Level III Neonatal Intensive Care, call 866-904-9262.

lay is synonymous with childhood. It seems as natural as breathing, yet involves so much more than just having fun. Play is essential to cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development. In fact, play is so important that it has been recognized as a basic right of every child by the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights. The benefits of play begin at birth As parents, we provide the first play experiences and it is up to us to choose the activities that will maximize developmental potential at each stage of growth. Understanding the many different benefits of play can help you make the most out of the precious early moments with your baby. Play facilitates your baby’s cognitive development. As babies hear, smell, taste, touch, and see something new, sensory messages are sent directly to their brain making important connections. Stimulating the senses through play activities like singing, laughing, reading picture books, and selecting the appropriate toys for each age, you help make the important physical neural connections in your baby’s brain that

higher ordered thinking is later built upon. Bonding is the attachment that develops between parents and their baby and has proven to be essential for the establishment of several crucial concepts central to human development. Parents who have strong ties with their baby tend to raise children who have a strong sense of security, positive self-esteem, and healthy interpersonal adjustment. A lack of adequate bonding in infancy is associated with intense stress responses, higher incidences of antisocial behavior, fears of abandonment, and poorly developed self-concepts later in life. Bonding happens over time as a result of everyday caregiving. Through regular play and contact with your baby that displays love, patience, and warmth, you become closer to each other emotionally, as well as hone early communication skills. Through activities that involve touch, eye contact, vocalization, and facial expressions, you teach their first social development and communication lessons while soothing them and promoting healthy growth.

Play helps babies develop motor skills. Choosing games that involve practicing motor skills appropriate for each stage of growth improves your baby’s abilities to master these skills. Physical play that involves developmental tasks like rolling over, crawling, walking, reaching, grasping, and pointing helps prepare your baby for more advanced levels of physical demands. Thinking about balancing obligations to your home, spouse, family, friends, and work can make it difficult to find time to play. Sitting on the floor making funny noises while banging spoons on pots with a mile long to-do list that is growing by the minute can feel ludicrous, but remember that play builds lasting bonds and provides a framework for social and emotional development. Not only does your baby need the time with you
for soothing, learning, and relaxation, but playing can also be a stress reliever for overworked parents. Laughing and taking time to enjoy your little one is crucial for your own well-being. It is important to address concerns about your emotional wellness immediately. Studies have repeatedly demonstrated the lasting negative effects that parental stress and/or depression have on children. As a psychologist working with families, I have frequently found myself engaged in discussion with parents stressing the importance of making time to engage in fun activities with their babies and children. Often times, parents have questions about their baby’s development and worry about whether they are on the right track. For these reasons, my practice has started a new

program, Building Blocks, a playgroup for parents to learn essential activities for baby’s development at each stage of growth. Hands-on play experiences are tailored for each age group. These experiences teach parents interactions that promote brain development and physical, social, and emotional growth. Parents’ questions about their baby’s progress and development will be answered. This program is a unique opportunity to engage in directed activities that foster simultaneous growth and bonding. The group format provides new parents with a social environment and a chance to interact with other adults at a time most parents tend to feel isolated at home. Groups are divided by age range (0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-9 months, 9-12 months, 12-18 months, 18-24 months, and 2-3 years). For more information on this program, please phone 561.207.7625.
