Cooking Gifts for
From those irresistible homemade cookies to favorite meals Mom that always warm the heart; no one knows their way around the kitchen quite like mom. While thinking of what to give your favorite lady for Mother’s Day this year, consider gifts that allow her to tap into her inner foodie, chef or baker. Everyone knows the best gifts are those that keep on giving. Cook for the Cure, a 13-year partnership between KitchenAid and Susan G. Komen®, has raised more than $9.5 million for the fight against breast cancer. In 2014, KitchenAid will donate $450,000 or more to Komen through the Cook for the Cure program, regardless of sales. The Cook for the Cure product collection, ranging from pink stand mixers and blenders to pink food choppers and hand blenders, is an easy way to give thanks to mom, and raise awareness towards a cause that affects so many women. For other gift ideas that help support the cause, visit www.KitchenAid.com and http:// CookfortheCure.KitchenAid.com/. Blending Style with Power With its roomy, 60-ounce patented diamond pitcher design and stainless steel blades, the 5-Speed Diamond Blender in Raspberry Ice creates a powerful vortex to thoroughly blend everything from soups to smoothies. Automatic Soft Start technology pulls ingredients into the blade rather than splattering them outward, keeping them together for controlled blending. This colorful blender ($179.99) offers stir, chop, puree, liquefy and pulse options — everything mom needs to create her favorite dishes. An Essential, Everyday Tool If some of her best culinary creations include savory sauces and delicious dips, Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to treat mom to an upgrade. This 3.5-cup Food Chopper in Cranberry is convenient for everyday use and takes up minimal space in the kitchen. With two speed settings and one-touch chop and puree options, this chopper ($49.99) is ideal for creating a scrumptious salsa, creamy hummus or tangy pesto sauce. Handy Little Helper Whether you need to blend up a milkshake or puree cooked vegetables directly in the pot, this 2-Speed Hand Blender in Cranberry gets the job done with ease. Two speeds provide blending control for more delicate foods, such as smoothies and baby food. The blending arm twists off for quick and easy cleanup. This hand blender ($59.99) comes with a 3-cup BPA-free jar with lid, so mom can blend away, safely.

It’s Her Day: 17 Practically Perfect Presents for the Mom in Your Life BY RHONDA FRANZ
1. Courier service. For inside the house. Let her take a break from her usual hustleand-bustle. Whenever she needs anything from any room, run and get it for her, all day long. 2. (Bed) Room service. After you have let her sleep in, of course. 3. A night out/a night off. With girlfriends, with Daddy, with family whatever works. 4. A magazine subscription. The magazine she always picks up to read in a store, but never buys a subscription to. 5. Fine art. Not Picasso. Special, personal art from her children: watercolors, finger painting, or something they brought home from school - framed and ready to hang on the wall (see page 10 for cool projects to do with your children’s art). 6. A hobby gift basket. Think about what the mom in your life likes to do outside of work, family, and household. An artistic mama might need some new tools of the trade. A knitter, perhaps new patterns or yarn. A mom who likes to scrapbook is

probably lacking some supplies she could use, and a reading mom would always welcome books. 7. A game app for her smartphone. Just in case she wants to while away the day in bed. 8. Subscription to a flower delivery service. A perfect way to welcome spring and summer. 9. A totally frivolous new pair of shoes. A kind she wants and likes, but absolutely doesn’t need. 10. Ditto for a new piece of jewelry. 11. Subscription to a grocery delivery service. 12. Business cards for her profession as “Mom.” Fun contact cards for any mom, whether she works at home or away from it. 13. No sibling rivalry for at least one day. For the moms with kids at home. Fair warning: if you give a mom one day of no sibling rivalry, she is certain to ask for more.
14. Her favorite drink. A pound of coffee, a box of gourmet spiced tea, a bottle of her favorite wine (chilled and ready to drink). 15. Her favorite snack. More than just a serving size. Perhaps enough to last her week. 16. Cash. Skip the gift card. Cash is ideal. Don’t let her spend it on your next field trip with children. 17. A frivolous personal service she would never purchase herself. A manicure with nail art, bold highlights in her hair, henna tattoo (or perhaps a real one). Moms get to have fun, too. Rhonda Franz lives, writes, and raises children in her Northwest Arkansas home. Most of her shoes are brown and sensible, so #9 is really on her heart this year.

Ten Crafty Ways to Repurpose Their Masterpieces
BY RHONDA FRANZ Sometime around preschool, your children’s cherished scribbles begin to multiply at an impressive rate. And before you can say “fridge-worthy,” you’re wading through daily mountains of creativity. Soon the day may come when you’re presented with a masterpiece, and the sheer quantity inspires a less than motherly thought: another one? Are you out of display space, but can’t bring yourself to toss their colorful creations into the trash? Try reusing their art with these unique projects—and reclaim your fridge in the process. Magnets. Don’t you love those tiny people, houses, and pets they draw? Cut them out and stick them to magnets for instant toys (adhesive magnetic sheets can be purchased at large retail stores, such as Walmart). For added protection, cover the exposed drawing with clear contact paper to protect it against spills and smudged fingers. If young children aren’t yet drawing figures, cut their scribbles or paintings into shapes of people or animals. If you aren’t good at cutting freehand, trace cookie cutter shapes instead. Make sure these magnets are too big to be swallowed. Bonus: once they’ve outgrown these magnets, you’ll

have nostalgic fridge art that you can actually use. Work Box. Create a “work box” by collecting some of your children’s seasonal artwork each month and placing it in a gift box. You can also add tape and different sized frames to the box. This makes a great gift for parents or other extra-special relatives. Give it to them to take to work; as each season comes up, they’ll have timely artwork at hand to display in their workspace. It’s a lovely, personal, ever-changing reminder of your child. Three-Ring Binder. Send your child to school with a one-of-a-kind binder displaying one of their favorite personal creations. Simply purchase a binder with a see-through plastic overlay on the outside of the front cover. You may need to cut artwork slightly to fit it into the overlay. Their art will be on constant display, and protected too. Placemats. Cover their art on both sides with clear contact paper. Make sure the contact paper extends about ¼-½ inch beyond the edge of the drawing and press the contact paper edges together so that water can’t seep into the
drawing when the placemat is washed. For something sturdier, glue artwork to placemats bought at the store, and then cover both the artwork and the bottom of the placemat with contact paper, extending the contact paper ½ inch beyond the edge of the placemat on all sides. Sponge-wash only. Gift Cards. With minimal work, you can turn cardstock and adhesive photo corners into cheery cards that feature their paintings. After folding a piece of cardstock in half, cut artwork about ½ inch smaller on all sides than the front of the card. Place a photo corner on each corner of the painting, then stick the corners to the front of the card to complete. Puzzles. To make good puzzles that are easy to put together, choose pictures that include large objects which your children will be able to put back together without
too much trouble. Objects like houses, rockets and flowers are great because they have distinct parts that need to be put together in a certain way to make sense. Cover both sides of the chosen drawing or painting with clear contact paper, and then cut the art into large puzzle pieces. You can also take a picture of your kids’ artwork and order a puzzle of it at www.snapfish.com. Origami. Create something fun and useful by folding their art into unique coasters, picture frames, and fun shapes. The folding itself makes a great project for older children. Younger children will simply enjoy the end result. For instructions, consider a site like en.origami-club.com, which rates projects from very easy to very difficult, and offers free animated instructions and diagrams. Coffee Table Book. If your children love to draw the same things over and

over, and you’ve accumulated a dozen different versions of unicorns, snowmen or dinosaurs, bind the individual pieces together into a book for display. If possible, label each page with the approximate month and year it was created and order chronologically, to show your children’s growth. If they draw similar images months or years later, you can add those to the book, too. Binding can be as simple as punching holes through the side of each page using a three-hold punch, and then tying a piece of yarn or ribbon through each hole to hold the pages together. Framed Gifts. Paintings of special people and places, when placed in a stylish frame, make great gifts for doting relatives who will appreciate and hang them.
Decorate. Instead of plastering your fridge with a chaos of art, create a pretty and organized display place to enhance your home. Some ideas: hang a string of ribbon across a wall, and use colorful hair clips or clip-on birds and other animals from the floral section of the craft store to attach the art; cover a wall with framed masterpieces; or choose a wall of their bedroom and wallpaper it with paintings that have similar colors which blend together in an appealing way. After repurposing their artwork in these fun ways, you may even find yourself asking for more “works of heart” to use and display. Colleen Wright is the work-from-home mom of a spirited preschooler who fills her home with creativity, color and paint— sometimes minus the paper.

Take Control of Your Allergies BY JAMIE LOBER
While Palm Beach County families get to have fun in the sun, for some it comes with the toll of being susceptible to seasonal burdens that allergies can bring. “In South Florida this is a bad time of year for molds and pollens,” said Dr. William F. Tuer with Roberson Asthma and Allergy, on staff at St. Mary’s Medical Center. The unfortunate news is that the pollen season extends the whole year. We recently pollinated oak. “If a child is allergic to that particular pollen he may well have had a problem with his allergies,” said Tuer. While some parents confuse the signs of allergies with the hallmarks of a common cold, they are slightly different. “With allergies symptoms are repetitive sneezing, a clogged or runny nose, and itchy eyes” said Tuer. Allergies can trigger asthma as well so you have to learn what times of year pose challenges and figure out how you can cope. “When it rains we have mold spores that live in the soil but they can also grow indoors if you have
14 May 2014 | PB Parenting |
moisture inside that leaks under your sink or in the roof,” said Tuer. The weather fronts do not help the cause. “We see a lot of barometric changes as highs move in. That stirs up debris and breezes will blow pollen grains and mold spores and make them airborne,” said Tuer. When you have a breeze, the pollen or mold is disseminated easier which is troublesome for allergy sufferers. Children with allergic rhinitis or inflammation of the nose are more likely to pick up viruses from classmates. “You have an enhanced chance for frequent upper respiratory congestion during the winter months if you have allergies,” said Tuer. If you have asthma it might kick in as well on cool days. Do not forget that allergens are not just limited to the outdoors. “Dust mites live in our mattresses and pillows so if you know your child is allergic, you can take precautions. Use mattress and pillow covers that are specifically made for dust mite allergy and launder sheets, pillow
cases and blankets in the hot water cycle,” said Tuer. 130 degrees will kill dust mites. “If your child has a favorite stuffed animal, throw it in the dryer periodically to kill the mites and wash it first, if it is washable,” said Tuer.

pollen counts pick up and is predominantly related to trees. It is nearly impossible to avoid things you are allergic to completely. “Change the air conditioner filter regularly,” said Tuer. While prevention helps, it does not eliminate all of your allergy symptoms. “We generally say to visit your pediatrician first because they are good at treating allergies and will usually use medicines such as antihistamines, prescription nasal steroids or eye drops if necessary,” said Tuer. If the pediatrician does not do a satisfactory job in controlling the symptoms, they will send the child to an allergist. “The advantage is an allergist knows specifically what the child is allergic to and can put suitable control measures, into place” said Tuer. There are other avenues to take if medication does not work. “There is allergy desensitization or shots, although they would not be the first solution,” said Tuer. If overthe-counter antihistamines do not work, there are prescription medications that can make a difference. New protocols are on the horizon. “There are continual advances in the treatment of asthma. Sublingual therapy is coming out soon which are little drops under the tongue rather than shots,” said Tuer. Patients can feel good about the future of allergy and immunology medicine. “They are standardizing allergy immunotherapy serum. It is now pure and FDA-regulated,” said Tuer. For sufferers, winter and spring are not easy, but there is reason to have hope. The Doctor’s Choice True HEPA Compact Tower Allergen Remover (Air Purifier) Allergens can be a major interruption to your daily life– but maintaining indoor air quality shouldn’t be. The new Honeywell True HEPA Air Purifiers provide trusted allergen, germ and odor reduction by capturing up to 99.97% of microscopic airborne particles that pass through the filter (as small as 0.3 microns – 250x smaller than the width of a human hair!). The HEPA filter effectively captures airborne grass, tree and other pollen, dust, smoke, pet fur/dander, mold spores, bacteria and virus. The pre-filter also absorbs odors and volatile organic compounds that result from cleaning supplies, new carpet, paint, and some types of furniture. This Compact Tower model is perfect for smaller rooms like offices, small bedrooms and kitchens. Ideal for apartment or condo living, the Compact Tower features powerful air cleaning technology in a smaller, more affordable size. This model features a convenient filter check reminder and an easy-dial control with three settings for customizable air cleaning. It is also so efficient to operate that it is ENERGY STAR® qualified and may qualify for utility rebates where available. For more information go to www.honeywellstore. com.
More Allergy Fighting Tips As you plan outdoor activities this summer, Dr. Travis Stork, ER Physician and host of the Emmy Award-winning talk show “The Doctors,” has partnered with the maker of Arm & Hammer Simply Saline nasal mists, to share his top five tips for a healthy and congestion-free summer. Keep it Simple and Natural The overuse of over-the-counter nasal decongestants can actually cause your congestion to return much worse than when it first appeared. Using products that are drug-free and derived from natural ingredients can help. Dr. Stork says, “A product like Arm & Hammer Simply Saline Nasal Mist can be effective in clearing nasal congestion, without side effects.” Know When to Work Out Staying active and exercising for at least 30 minutes a day is a great way to fight off illness, but for allergy sufferers, be sure to plan workouts accordingly. Pollen counts are highest in the morning, so it’s best to plan to work out during a time of day when pollen levels are a bit lower. Allergy-Proof the House Allergens exist indoors and outdoors, so take steps in your home. A few simple steps are to wipe your feet and take off your shoes when entering the home. You can also prevent mold with a dehumidifier and remove allergens by cleaning the floors with a vacuum that has a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter. Wash Away Those Allergens Don’t ditch your favorite outdoor hobby just because you suffer from allergies. Shed the allergens stuck to clothes, bedding and bags by remembering to wash clothes, bedding and bags as often as possible. Health & Wellness Simple Swaps For Switching Off
BY LARA KRUPICKA “Screen-Free Week”can be a challenging exercise which provides a sense of accomplishment. But for many families it’s also a relief to return to a screen-oriented lifestyle afterwards. In fact, it can be hard to imagine going without TV or internet devices on a regular basis. For some practical screen time substitutions, take a glimpse at a day in the life of a (relatively) screen-free family: Morning - Morning in our household consists of getting three children out the door to junior high and elementary school. I’m up at 5:30 am to snatch time to myself. By 6:30 am my girls are up and getting dressed for school. Wardrobes are selected after a quick check of the weather forecast in the paper or on an iPad. Within a half hour everyone gathers for breakfast. We eat together on most days (minus Dad, who usually arrives at work before we’re up). Over breakfast we review any activities for the day. While I read the newspaper, my eldest occasionally looks over my shoulder at the sports news. Occasionally we all discuss an interesting news report I’ve chosen to share with them.
18 May 2014 | PB Parenting |
Dr. Amy Nathanson, Associate Professor of Communication at Ohio State University points out the crucial nature of parents filtering the news for their children.“Depending on their age and development, children simply aren’t ready to hear the kind of information news stories typically contain. In many cases, exposing children to news stories only results in them becoming frightened and they don’t have the ability to effectively manage their fears.” By 8am everyone is gone. I head to my office where I will work at my computer. The morning is otherwise screen free. Afternoon - Elementary school dismisses at 2:30pm and my younger two arrive home shortly after. They empty their backpacks and scoot up to the kitchen counter for a snack. I stand and chat with them for a bit. Soon my eldest returns from junior high and by then homework time is well under way. The TV in our family room sits dark. Aside from my teen listening to her iPod in her room and instruments being practiced, the house is still. It’s 4pm. One child reads on a couch while another plays LEGOS® nearby. Even though the television is right there, they don’t ask to turn it on.
No TV during playtime, as it turns out, is a good thing.“Children’s play sessions are shorter and less sophisticated when background TV is present compared to when it is not,” says Nathanson.“Because children learn a tremendous amount from playing, the detrimental effect of background TV on children’s play is significant.” Before I start dinner preparations, I urge my middle child into the kitchen to work on her birthday wish list. She has no ideas. It’s not that she’s an odd child with no desires. Nor are we indulgent parents, buying her everything she requests. Essentially, without television marketing to influence her, she lives relatively satisfied with what she has. The wish list grows slowly. I move on to cooking dinner. Sometimes my children ask to play a video game together during the dead time before dinner. And often I allow them. As it’s a limited time and I know exactly what they’ll be seeing on the television, I’m comfortable with it. And I’m not alone. Lesley Wagner, a mother of three, also keeps her days relatively television free. But when it comes times to get dinner together, she admits she sometimes puts the TV on.“When my fouryear-old wakes up from his nap, we may watch TV while I’m making dinner. Maybe for twenty or thirty minutes.” As Bertin notes,“Some screen time is a part of life. If children are watching a small amount and we’re closely watching the content, they’ll be fine.” The problem arises when it becomes a habit that takes over. Nathanson explains,“Parents may want to rethink their use of TV when they find they are continually turning to it to satisfy their own or their child’s needs.” Evening - By 6pm Dad comes home and we sit down to dinner together. My husband takes this time to catch-up with our girls. “When the TV is off during meal time, family
members can tune into each other,”says Nathanson.“The reality is that it’s difficult for anyone to ignore the images and sounds coming from a television. By turning the TV off, parents and children can talk and really listen to each other.” After dinner we all clear the table. In the kitchen the three girls tease each other and carry on loudly as they wash the dishes. Once the dishes are done our eldest returns to her homework. Sometimes the rest of us play a board or card game. At 7pm the bedtime routine starts. Our youngest showers, while the others read. The family room is empty, so Dad sneaks in a quick video game (he can’t help it). By 8:30pm the house is quiet. The girls have gone to bed. I read. Dad settles in with a puzzle. The television is off. After catching up on Facebook (yes, we’re guilty of computer screen time more than anything), it’s lights out for us. We both drift off easily, not wired by a fast-paced late night news program. Dr. Bertin sums it up well.“Recognize that media doesn’t have to happen to us. We can decide how to use media, even for our kids.”It’s intentionality that makes the difference. Lara Krupicka is a freelance writer who admits to enjoying one television show and plenty of games each week with her husband and three girls. Tips for Limiting Your Screen Time • Set and keep rules on how and what children will watch. • Provide reasons for those rules and involve older children in deciding on the rules. • Don’t place televisions and computers in children’s rooms or other places where they can’t be easily monitored. Consider limiting where tablets and laptops can be used. For more information and ideas about screen-free week, see www.screenfree.org. | PBParenting.com | May 2014

MAZES
South Florida Science Center and Aquarium announces summer-time traveling exhibit opening May 3.
Twists and turns will help you learn at the newest traveling exhibit Mazes. Opening to the public on the evening of Saturday, May 3rd, the exhibit will lead guests on an adventure through a series of interactive brain-teasers, 3-D puzzles and full body games. On display through September 14, 2014, Mazes is sure to ‘amaze’ all summer long. Mazes winds its way over 9,000 squarefeet with more than 60 puzzling experiences that inspire endless hours of exploration and ingenuity. Visitors will have the opportunity to run a marathon with their fingers on the Finger Mazes; become a “webmaster” by climbing through an intricate web of ropes in the Web Maze; get lost in a network of color in the Color Maze; and conquer puzzling perplexities in the Maze of Illusions, where what you see may not be what you get! “This is quite possibly the most interactive exhibit we have ever hosted,” said Lew Crampton, South Florida Science Center and Aquarium CEO. “Themed mazes are powerful kinesthetic learning tools. This is hands-on, minds-on science at its best and we know that the exhibit will create a memorable experience for our visitors– one
that is both entertaining and educational.” Mazes aims to encourage guests to explore new ways of problem-solving, challenge the relationship between the mind and the eye, nurture creativity and serve as a bridge between multigenerational boundaries, as the exhibit is fun and challenging for all ages. To celebrate the grand opening of Mazes, the Science Center will host Food Truck Fusion, a food truck event, on Saturday, May 3rd from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. In addition to exploring Mazes, guests will have the opportunity to explore local food vendors offering delicious menu items such as mouth-watering burgers, tacos, pizza, cupcakes, ice cream and more. The grand opening celebration will also feature live music and activities for the entire family. Admission to the Science Center for the special grand opening celebration will be reduced to $10 for adults and $7 for children ages 3 to 12. Science Center members can enjoy the special event for free. The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is located at 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach and is open Monday – Friday from 9am5pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 10am6pm. For more information, call 561-832-1988 or visit www.sfsciencecenter.org. “Like” the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium on Facebook and follow them on Twitter @SFScienceCenter.

Discover why everyone is going wild for Wild Blueberries If you love to cook, discover the wild advantage and fill your freezer with Wild Blueberries. Packed with more intense blueberry flavor and two times the antioxidants of regular blueberries, Wild Blueberries are wildly different from the cultivated blueberries you find in the fresh produce section. Don’t be fooled by their small size, these berries pack more flavor and antioxidant power into their tiny blue bodies than any other blueberry on this big blue planet. This makes them the blueberry of choice for anyone interested in cooking, baking, making smoothies and more. Here are two delicious recipes from two talented food bloggers with a shared love for tiny, potent Wild Blueberries and a passion for developing innovative, healthy and tasty twists on the classics everyone loves. Our suggestion is to try them all and feed your wild side. For more delicious recipes, visit www. wildblueberries.com. Frozen Wild Blueberries are available at local Whole Food Markets in the freezer section. A Healthy Choice - A growing body of research is establishing Wild Blueberries as a potential ally to protect against cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease — so it’s no surprise that more

and more people are picking Wild Blueberries than ever before. A Tasty and Easy Option- Convenience and freshness are frozen right in. Wild Blueberries are individually quick-frozen within 24 hours of harvest, locking in their intense blueberry flavor, nutrition and antioxidant power. Gluten-Free Orange Pancakes with Wild Blueberry-Orange Sauce Recipe by Katie Heddleston, Healthy Heddleston, www.katieheddleston.com Yield: 12 to 15 thin pancakes, depending on size Wild Blueberry-orange sauce: 1/2 cup frozen Wild Blueberries 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed orange juice 1/2 teaspoon orange zest
1 teaspoon granulated sugar (or honey) Orange pancakes: 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons gluten-free flour 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (or honey) 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice 1/4 cup milk 1 egg 1/2 teaspoon orange zest 1 tablespoon melted butter or margarine First make sauce. In small sauce pan, combine all ingredients and place on low heat while preparing pancakes. Stir occasionally. Smash Wild Blueberries to desired consistency. On griddle or electric skillet, preheat to medium heat. To make pancakes, combine all dry ingredients in a medium mixing bowl. Then add in wet ingredients. Whisk everything together until well combined; batter will be thin. Make sure pan is hot before scooping batter. Using 1/4-cup scoop, pour batter (but not whole scoopful) into pancake shapes on griddle. Batter is thin so not much is needed for each pancake. Wait until
pancake bubbles before flipping. Flip and cook other side. Continue process until all batter is used. Pour sauce over pancakes while warm. Note: Only one orange is needed for fresh juice and zest for both pancakes and sauce. Wild Blueberry, Coconut and Ginger Smoothie Recipe by Rachael Hartley, An Avocado A Day, www.anavocadoaday.blogspot.com Yield: 1 serving 1 cup frozen Wild Blueberries 1 cup 2 percent plain yogurt 1/4 cup light coconut milk 2 tablespoons unsweetened, shredded coconut 1/2 teaspoon grated fresh ginger Place all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. Serve immediately.
