These moms took their creative hobbies, started businesses and created a source of income for their families. Little Miss Princess Tutu - April Todd has her plate full. She is a mother to three children, Madelyn, 8, Andrew, 6 and Katelyn, 2, and a wife to Jason, a Palm Beach County firefighter. Five years ago, she started Little Miss Princess Tutu, after wanting to create tutus for her daughter’s birthday party. The business began through word of mouth, trunk shows, eBay and an online store. “I have to admit, the first few years were hard. At the time I had a 3-year old and a 1-year old. I would create tutus during nap time and in the evening. Sometimes I found myself working late into the evening to complete my orders,” Todd said. “This is what a lot of mothers who work from home realize. There is no set work hours, so home life and business life can get mixed together.” To help ease some of her late nights, Todd and her husband sat down and came up with an “office hours” plan. These set hours was when she would devote time to her business and time she would devote to her family.

10 May 2012 | PB Parenting |

“Creating ‘office hours’ has allowed me to do it all. I have time to play with my 2-year old, run my kids to their activities, keep up with laundry, cook dinner and spend time with my husband! A lot of my friends Photo by Kristina Hubschmitt ask how I find www.seaflowers.net time to make tutus with having three children. The secret is office hours!” Todd said. Having a business that allows Todd to stay home with her children makes her feel blessed. “I can attend school parties, parent lunches, and enjoy every precious moment with my children. It also gives me self fulfillment outside of being a mom and wife. It is something that I am proud of and something that is my very own,”she said. Tiny Tags (formerly Tiny Tag Designs) - In 2007, owner and designer Melissa Clayton started

creating simple and chic custom jewelry in sterling silver and 14k gold as a hobby while staying at home with her three young boys. Since then, Tiny Tags has grown into a ‘real’ company still run by Melissa and her team of fellow moms. Tiny Tags is in over 12 boutiques in the United States and Canada and has been featured in Glamour Magazine, People.com, CelebrityBabyScoop and many more. Melissa’s advice to moms: “The best advice I would give is to find something you love and try to sell it even if someone else already makes it and sells it. I was not the first mommy necklace company but I knew I loved it and could connect with moms/ customers. If there is a product you love, call the wholesaler (if you can’t make it yourself) and try to buy it in bulk and then sell it to your friends and family to start. Loving the product and having a passion for it are important when you always trying to squeeze work in.” Palm Beach Parties - As the mother of two bouncy girls, owner Carla Thomas knows how important - and stressful - putting on memorable parties can be. Harnessing her graphic design and business backgrounds, Carla launched Palm Beach Parties to make party planning easier and more colorful. From invitations and thank you notes, to tablescapes and décor, Palm Beach Parties designs can be printed from a home computer or ordered directly. “It truly is amazing to be a mommy entrepreneur and share what you LOVE doing with others! As a stay at home mommy, it is rewarding to be able to spend my days with my two girls and still bring in some sort of income,” Thomas said,

adding, ” The staying up late at night working on orders can be a bit challenging, however I have learned to nap when my 3-year old does during the day. I hope she continues to nap for a long time! If you would have asked me last Summer when this little venture launched where I envisioned Palm Beach Parties would be in a year, I would have never imagined this far! To have my designs be part of the celebrity and press “swag bags” at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards and the 2012 Prime-Time Emmy Awards is beyond a dream come true.” Xpressive Designs began as a hobby. Ximena Aerenas started creating specialty cakes and goods for her family and close friends for their birthdays and other special occasions. Aerenas tells us how she got started: “A few

The perfect gift for Mother’s Day (and don’t forget grandmothers too!)

years ago, I wanted to create something different and fun for my daughter’s birthday party, so I started playing with a cake, making it in different bite size shapes and covering them in chocolate and butter cream. Then I started making them as presents when we would go to birthday parties, graduations, etc., and had a great response from people to the point that they started placing orders. So little by little, my clientele began growing. But it hasn’t been easy. At first I was juggling between my job at a local bank, being a mom, a housewife and in the evenings and weekends making cakes.“ She had many sleepless nights, baking and decorating cakes because most orders have to be delivered or ready for pick up on Saturday or Sunday mornings. Aerenas added, “My husband has been very supportive and helps in any way he can, whether it’s delivering cakes or helping me in the kitchen. After a while, we came to the realization that it was getting too much and I decided to quit my job at the bank and devote myself to my baking and creativity.” Now Aerenas’ typical day is in the mornings she gets her daughter ready for school and her husband leaves with her, by 8 a.m. After that, she is free to work on all of my orders and start prepping for the upcoming weekend.

“One of the best things of having your own business is the flexibility,” Aerenas. “I can go shopping for the business, manage the online side, meet with customers while my daughter is in school and, oh yeah, don’t forget to cook dinner!”

Summer vacationing By Jackie Hull Summertime! The children are home from school and are looking for something to do. There are many opportunities available which won’t break the bank and will create memories to last a lifetime. Right here in your own backyard! The most economical outing for us is a day at the beach. People from all over the world travel to south Florida in search of sun and surf. We are fortunate to live here everyday. Pack up a cooler with plenty of water, a beach blanket and sunscreen and head on over to the beautiful beaches of the Gold Coast. We all love to eat out but it can be rather pricey, especially when going out with children. Check with your favorite eatery. Many of them have “Children Eat Free” promotions on a given day of the week. They usually plan them for the slower days such as Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays. During summer months some of the local bowling alleys offer free bowling. Information for this can be obtained through www.kidsbowlfree.com. Check too with the local movie theatres. Family friendly films are often free of charge at select theatres and select performances. Many also offer a special snack pack to nibble on for a fraction of the usual cost.

in your backyard Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter is the home of the future major league baseball players and pro action ball. There are games that feature fireworks, reduced pricing, and other promotions. The games are exciting and action packed. Be a tourist in your own town! Check out the local attractions. Many have very reasonably priced season passes available as well as some coupons which may be available on their web sites. Find out what’s happening in our community. Many organizations have unique fundraisers or special events. At the end of June, the local chapter of the Florida Council of the Blind will be hosting a guide dog wedding. This will be open to the public and will be both educational and entertaining. Pick up PB Parenting or check out our event’s calendar online for all kind of low cost and free family friendly events. There is so much to do in Palm Beach, many at low or no cost. So there is no reason for the summer blues.
