Community Cares
Holiday Air Travel Family Style BY SARA KENDALL Family trips with children are often where wonderful memories are made, but it’s rarely an easy task. Add in traffic jams, winter weather, or delayed flights and you have a perfect storm for stress levels to spike. For both children and adults, disrupted schedules, confined spaces, and over stimulation can be anything but jolly and merry. Our suggestions will guide your family in having a smoother and saner flight to your holiday destination. Pack Together - Get your children involved in making their clothing decisions for the trip. Set them up to make good decisions by giving them the weather forecast at your destination, telling them what kind of activities you have planned, and explaining that luggage space is limited. Have them lay out everything they want to take. Review their clothing choices with them and explain why something is an excellent choice to take and why something might need to stay at home. Keep clothing organized in clear zip-lock bags and label with each kid’s name. It will make everything easier to find and dirty clothes can be stowed in them on the return trip home. Travel Restrictions - Check out your airline’s website to see how many bags are allowed and the cost for the first bag and each additional one. Unless you have achieved an elevated status in your frequent flyer program, you’re going to pay for every bag you check, and in some cases the ones you carry on. If you have them, consider shipping gifts several weeks prior to departure.
14 November 2013 | PB Parenting |
Postage might be cheaper than what an airline charges for a checked bag. Visit the Transportation Security Administration at tsa.gov to find out limits for carry-on liquids including baby food, formula, and breast milk. You will have to declare any liquids at security checkpoints. Carry-ons - With the cost of checked baggage fees, it’s tempting to cram everything possible in a carry-on. Before you do it, check your airline’s policy on carryons. Most have restrictions on size and the amount of bags a person can bring on board. Luckily, most airlines still let you check a car seat or stroller for free. Make sure you have plenty of room to pack ample supply of snacks and diapers in case of delays. Pack an extra set of clothes for your little ones in the case someone encounters a glass of spilled juice or doesn’t make it to the bathroom on time. A pillow and blanket are also good to have for nap time. Allow Extra Time - On departure day, leave early to give your family plenty of time to navigate through crowded roadways, packed parking lots, and long lines at the airport security. Waiting in the long bathroom lines and sitting down for a snack needs to be taken in account in your time equation. To save some precious minutes, pack some
snacks to avoid the hassle of food court lines. Find the Family Lane - Take advantage of the family lanes at the airport. In most airports, your family can get through security quicker via going through the family lanes. Kids 12 and under do not have to remove their shoes.
Providing Academic Excellence in South Florida for over 20 years. Give your child the building blocks of their future,
CAMBRIDGE STYLE.
™
Take-off and Landing - The change in air pressure can cause unexpected ear pain. The action of chewing or sucking will make air pressure change easier on ears. A baby can be given a bottle, a toddler a lollipop, and an older child a piece of chewing gum to ease the discomfort. En-route Entertainment - Load up electronic devices with new games and kidfriendly apps that your children have never tried. Headphones or ear buds are essential to keeping the noise levels down. Also, don’t forget to charge the batteries or to have fresh ones with you on the plane. Pack a couple of new magnetic games and puzzles. A new book of stickers is another good choice. Realistic Expectations - Parents do worry about their children’s behavior and how other passengers may react. Traveling takes a toll on everyone, but it’s harder for children to overcome a total change in their daily routine and handle sitting in a confined space for an extended period of time. Being tired and restless can result in cranky behavior. Hopefully, you can avoid most of your children’s unpleasant behavior, but go ahead and expect some attitude from someone nearby. Keep your emotions in check. Thank your fellow passengers for their understanding. Take our suggestions and add them to your family’s flight plan. If you pack your patience and sense of humor, you will be ready for anything. If all else fails, remember at some point, the flight will land. Let Gratitude Shine BY SARA KENDALL
Thanksgiving is not a holiday about wearing a costume, receiving candy, or getting gifts. It’s all about eating too much turkey and pumpkin pie, succumbing to a food coma while watching football, then launching an attack on Black Friday sales, right? In reality, it’s not about overeating, football, or shopping at all. Help your kids get more out of Thanksgiving by focusing on the true meaning of the holiday - gratitude. How it All Started - Thanksgiving marks a remembrance of those Pilgrims who crossed an uncharted ocean from Europe in search of true freedom in what later became Plymouth, Massachusetts. The Pilgrims suffered hard times through a cold winter with no food. Many became sick and died. The remaining Pilgrims did not give up, and befriended Native American Indians who showed them how to plant corn and other crops, learning how to harvest the crops for their survival. This first harvest celebration between the Pilgrims and Indians lasted for three days. It’s important for children to hear how our Thanksgiving traditions were born.
give up, they persevered and learned to be grateful for what they had. How can we show our children the importance of Thanksgiving and giving thanks? We offer 3 ideas to start your family down the path of understanding gratitude. Jar of Thanks - Start a week or so ahead of Thanksgiving and have each family member write down what he or she is thankful for on a piece of paper and place it in a jar. If you have younger children give some simple examples of what you are thankful for like a warm fall day or bubble bath. Assist younger children by writing down theirs for them. Continue writing down one each day until Thanksgiving Day arrives. Have every family member take out one piece of paper and read aloud. It will be a beautiful moment to hear all the big and small things your family appreciates. This simple Thanksgiving Day tradition can become part of your holiday every year.
Thankful Tree - Celebrate the beauty of the holiday by creating a festive centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table. Adorn bare tree The true meaning of the Thanksgiving story branches with homemade leaves. Fill these is that there will be tough times for all of us, leaves with words of gratitude. Kids love but it is important to always find something to cut, draw and color, they will love to get to appreciate in our lives. The Pilgrims did not involved in this project.

Items Needed · Colored paper in fall hues of orange, red, yellow and brown · Scissors · Hole punch · Twine or yarn · Pencils, crayons or markers · 2 or 3 bare tree branches · One pot or vase · Sand, dirt or rocks
express their gratitude.
Instructions · Fold over colored paper and cut out different leaf shapes. Cut out 25 or 30 leaves. · Using the hole punch, make a hole at the base of each leaf. · Place a piece of twine through the hole on each leaf and tie a knot. · Have every family member write down things they are thankful for on each of their leaves. Encourage using small responses like “my sister” or “getting an A on a test.” · Place sand, dirt or rocks into the bottom of the vase. Place the branches deep into the pot and cover up with the anchor material of your choosing. · Hang the leaves throughout the branches. Your family has created a Thankful Tree which will take center stage on this holiday. If you are inviting guests over on Thanksgiving, have some extra leaves ready for them, so they can be a part of taking a moment to
Give Back - Put the spirit of Thanksgiving into practice by giving back to the community. Younger kids can collect cans of food from friends and family to donate to a local shelter or food bank. Older kids can volunteer at a soup kitchen to assist with their Thanksgiving meal. Call several weeks ahead. Your child could help prepare food during the days leading up to the holiday or serve food on Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving is generally a time when many tend to overeat. Consider going another direction and taking part in a charity Turkey Trot or 5K run. Your family can contribute to a good cause and work off some extra calories all at once. Find a local race and start taking donation pledges. Your family will know they have earned their Thanksgiving dinner once they cross the finish line. Choose one or two of these wonderful ways to bring gratitude into your family’s Thanksgiving holiday. You are helping your children get more out of Thanksgiving than an overstuffed belly and a football game. Your entire family will be more aware of things they are thankful for and hopefully appreciate the big and small things that come along in their life. Caregiver 101: Information You Should Know Before You Hire

When looking for the perfect caregiver, many families don’t know where to begin. Though the Internet offers a quick solution for finding caregiver information, it can also be a misleading source.
offenses, such as felonies, these sites often miss the mark on reporting minor crimes and misdemeanors. These are the types of crimes that speak volumes about an applicant’s character and past.
Whether looking for a babysitter for a few weeknights or a full-time nanny, knowing the history of your caregivers is vital. In fact, according to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, babysitters are responsible for 4.2 percent of criminal acts against children under six years of age. Though this is a small percentage, some believe these types of crimes could have been prevented with the appropriate information up front.
Live court research: In addition to a traditional online search, you should also conduct the more thorough option of live court research. Though a more costly choice, live court research extensively searches current and past court records, both state and federal. Look for a screening company with the most up-to-date information, such as Validity Screening Solutions, who has more than 1,600 record researchers that cover all jurisdictions in the United States, to offer the most current and accurate information. For more information, visit www.validityscreening.com.
When conducting a background check, there are two main types to choose from: live court research and online database searches. Online databases: With an affordable price tag and a quick turnaround with information, many people turn to online sites when looking for the appropriate caregiver for their family. Though many of these sites tout that their applicants are ‘mom recommended,’ many are simply electronic databases with little investigative reporting on applicant history. Though they do report major

Create a caregiver checklist : “A thorough screening includes live court research in addition to an online web search,” said Darren Dupriest, president and CEO of Validity Screening Solutions. “Make sure your search includes an all-encompassing look at an applicant’s verifications, records with federal and state agencies and other personal assessment screenings, which are all
important determinants when choosing the best caregiver for your family.” Before choosing the appropriate background check, make sure it hits all the important marks listed below:

Be sure to look for a screening company that offers a multistate check. Driving records: For caregivers required to drive on the job, a thorough check of their driving history is essential. This includes the possession of a valid driver’s license, and ensuring it has not been suspended, revoked and the applicant has no objectionable moving violations. Verification: A proper check will ensure that past employment, certifications and references are verified through the original source. A complete review of a potential caregiver ensures you are entrusting your family to the safest, best care possible. It also provides peace of mind while you are away from them, which, in itself, is priceless. Source: Validity Screening Solutions

Keeping Kids Healthy Through Cold and Flu Season Steer clear of seasonal sniffles, sneezes, aches and pains As outdoor temperatures cool down, the likelihood of catching the flu or a cold increases. It’s never too early to start teaching children good habits that will keep them healthier year round. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states an average 20,000 children under the age of 5 are hospitalized due to flu-related complications each year. Avoiding germs that cause colds and the flu is easier than you might think. Follow these tips approved by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals to keep your family well this winter. Fight the flu. Getting a flu shot is the most important way to protect your family from influenza, says Dr.

Kari Simonsen, pediatric infectious disease specialist and epidemiologist at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center in Omaha. Experts at CHRISTUS Foundation Shreveport-Bossier agree; a child’s brief “sad face” from the shot is much preferred to a weeklong “sick face” from the flu! The vaccination is recommended for all children aged 6 months and older. Be a “soaper” scrubber. Remind kids that germs like to hide, so it’s important to wash hands well and often. Using soap and water, be sure to scrub for at least 15 seconds, or the length of time it takes to sing the ABCs! Make it a regular routine to wash hands whenever entering the house, exiting the bathroom and before eating. Also remember to wash frequently-touched surfaces in your home including doorknobs, remotes, the

refrigerator and light switches. Hands off! Children are known for their curious natures and busy hands. While it may be impossible to control which surfaces they touch, consider training kids not to touch their faces. Viruses picked up from handling toys, books, doorknobs and numerous other surfaces can easily enter the body through the mouth, nose or eyes.

any age is feeling under the weather. Reducing close or direct contact will help avoid spreading germs to those who are especially susceptible to infections, like the elderly or other children.
Be vitamin vigilant. A well-balanced diet is essential for a number of health benefits, including fighting off a cold or flu virus. The Hospital for Sick Children recommends eating foods that contain vitamins C and D like fruits, vegetables, beans and lentils to ward off the cold and flu. Picky eaters may be more open to exploring new foods if they have a hand in preparing them. Let kids make edible plate art with healthy snack items and then eat their creations! Colds and flus can get nasty quick. If you suspect your child is in need of medical help, contact a medical professional or institution immediately. Source: Children’s Miracle Network
Take time to get a flu vaccine. CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses. While there are many different flu viruses, a flu vaccine protects against the three viruses that research suggests will be most common. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine as soon as the current season’s vaccines are available. Vaccination of high risk people is especially important to decrease their
risk of severe flu illness. People at high risk of serious flu complications include young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease and people 65 years and older. Vaccination also is important for health care workers, and other people who live with or care for high risk people to prevent spreading the flu to others. Children younger than 6 months are at high risk of serious flu illness, but are too young to be vaccinated. People who care for them should be vaccinated instead.
