Letter From The Publisher Greetings, The Holiday season is almost here! I say this every year but this year I mean it! I want to start my holiday shopping early! Jennifer and I have updated our “non-toy” holiday list for 2015. With 5 kids between the two of us, we are trying to keep the toy room clutter down. Our list focuses on a lot on experiences, classes, activities, events and places. Create memories together doing something fun! Check out our list of over 100+ ideas starting on page 8. I know I am already talking about holiday shopping but I don’t want to skip over Thanksgiving! Each year, I like to reflect on what I am thankful for. A Holiday Story for Pouty Preschoolers! The sequel to New York Times bestselling Pout-Pout Fish series reminds young readers what being merry is all about The grumpiest fish in children’s literature is back with another case of “the dreary wearies.” This time, Mr. Fish, star of The New York Times bestselling Pout-Pout Fish series, is down in the dumps over holiday shopping. With a message for readers of all ages, The Not Very Merry Pout-Pout Fish finds Mr. Fish so consumed with buying the perfect gift for each of his friends that he forgets the true meaning of the holidays: “A gift should be big/And a gift should be bright/And a gift should be perfect/Guaranteed to bring delight/And a gift should have meaning/Plus a bit of bling-zing/So I’ll shop till I drop/For each just-right thing”
Fish has won over the hearts of millions of young readers as he goes to school, faces the big-big dark, learns to smile, discovers how to dream, and plays hide-and-seek. Today there are more than 2.5 million Pout-Pout Fish books in print. PB Parenting recently had the opportunity to talk to Pout-Pout Fish series author Deborah Diesen about her latest book and the popular series. Q: How did you come up with the original Pout-Pout fish book in 2008?
A: The story grew out of an actual pout! One day many, many years ago, when my elder son was a preschooler, he was having When Mr. Fish—with his signature a very grouchy afternoon. Hoping to Pout-Pout Fish frown—comes up emptyamuse him, I made an exaggerated pouty handed, Miss Shimmer intervenes with a face at him. He smiled and then pouted plan to make homemade gifts. He soon right back, which got us both laughing. learns that it’s not about busting the “We look like fish,” I said. “Like pout-pout budget or gifting the season’s hottest item, fish!” As soon as I said that out loud, it but giving from the heart. Together they became a story idea. I jotted the idea experience the joy that comes from giving down and I started writing The Pout-Pout and sharing—the merriest gifts of all. Fish that same day. Years later, I started sending the story to publishers, and in Written by former bookseller and librarian 2005 it was accepted at Farrar, Straus & Deborah Diesen with illustrations by Giroux Books for Young Readers. The book veteran children’s artist Dan Hanna, The was published in 2008 and began a series Pout-Pout Fish was a 2008 Time Magazine of stories, all featuring Mr. Fish, his friends, “Top Ten Children’s Book.” Since then, Mr.

and their adventures. Q: Since the first book, we’ve seen Mr. Fish go to school, learn to smile, face the dark, discover how to dream and play hide-andseek. What do kids (and their parents) love most about the series? A: I think one of the things that makes Mr. Fish an appealing character for many kids and parents is that kids and parents alike can identify with his experiences. Toddlers sometimes pout; so do adults! Preschoolers have things they’re scared of; so do adults! Kindergarteners get nervous about starting something new; so do adults! Mr. Fish’s experiences provide a way for kids and grown-ups to explore those issues together. In addition, the stories have rhyme, repetition, and wordplay, which are fun in a read-aloud book. And Dan Hanna’s illustrations! They’re fantastic. They truly bring the stories to life.

Q. What is Mr. Fish up to now? Does he have a case of the “dreary wearies” in the latest book, too? A: Mr. Fish’s newest adventure is called The Not Very Merry Pout-Pout Fish. In it, Mr. Fish is in a bit of a holiday panic, searching for perfect gifts for all of his friends. His shopping trip is unsuccessful, and Mr. Fish is sure that he’s let all of his friends down. But his friend Miss Shimmer reminds him that the best gifts of all come straight from the heart, and she helps him craft simple and meaningful presents to bring to the holiday party. His friends are delighted with their presents, and together everyone celebrates peace, joy, and love – what a very merry gift! Q: What do you hope young readers (ages 3-6) will learn from The Not Very Merry Pout-Pout Fish? Is there a message here for grown-ups as well? A: I hope that Mr. Fish’s latest tale will help children to realize that presents don’t need to be expensive or complicated or splashy. Simple, heartfelt presents that connect us to one another are the best gifts of all. A drawing; a craft project; time spent together; even just a smile! These sorts of gifts are the most cherished and the most enduring. It’s a lesson we grownups have to re-learn periodically as well. Q: Do you have any tips for parents of toddlers about the joy of giving presents, rather than just receiving them, this holiday season? A: Kids love to give presents, and they especially love having an active role in the process of creating the presents. Try a craft idea or project that’s extremely simple and stress-free, and then let your child have at it with a minimum of help. The more messy, lopsided, and imperfect the results the better! Have fun with the process, and as you do you’ll create not

just gifts but memories as well. Q: How do you and the illustrator, Dan Hanna, work together on the books? (Are there any special stories about the illustrations on Not-Very-Merry that you can share?) A: I absolutely adore Dan’s art, and I credit it as the reason for the success of the series. We work independently of one another during the creation of the books. I work with our editor on the stories; then, when a story is finished and ready, she passes it along to Dan. Dan moves through the art creation process, from sketches to finished product, working with our editor and with the art director. I do see some of the steps along the way, but during the illustration process the author’s most important task is to stay out of the way! And that’s for the best, because it allows the artist to bring the story to life in the way only an artist can. Dan brings a thousand times more to the illustrations than I could ever begin to imagine – the characters and their expressions; the settings and their details; and all the funny and quirky extras. For instance, in The Not Very Merry Pout-Pout Fish, one of the spreads shows a store full of what I describe in the text as shiny trinkets and handy gadgets. Dan took that description and brought it alive by imagining, drawing, and labeling shelf after shelf in the gift shop with hilarious and unique sea gifts. His creativity is amazing. I feel very grateful and happy to get to make books with Dan! Q. Any future plans for Mr. Fish? What adventures can we expect to see him in next? A: Mr. Fish has a new mini-adventure coming out later this year called Kiss-Kiss, Pout-Pout Fish. This mini-adventure, like the previous mini-adventures Smile, PoutPout Fish and Sweet Dreams, Pout-Pout
Fish, is a very short board book with just a few words per page, meant for babies and young toddlers. In spring 2016, there will be a touch-and-feel alphabet book and a sticker book. Another mini-adventure, called Trick or Treat, Pout-Pout Fish, will arrive later in 2016. And in 2017, Mr. Fish will be in a new full-length hardcover called The Pout-Pout Fish, Far, Far From Home. He stays pretty busy these days! But he’s enjoying all of his adventures. As am I! For more information about the Pout Pout Fish Series go to www.poutpoutfish.com. The latest book, The Not Very Merry PoutPout Fish is available as a hardcover picture book and is recommended for ages 2-6 in Grades Pre K–1. Author Deborah Diesen will be presenting her book Wednesday, Nov. 13th at 3 PM at the Vero Beach Book Center, 392 21st Street, Vero Beach. For more info call, 772-569-2050.

Personalized Gifts Kids Can Make and Give, That Won’t Break Their Piggy Banks BY KIMBERLY BLAKER As holidays and birthdays approach, are your kids scrounging to buy gifts they can hardly afford? Offer them these fun ideas for gifts from the heart. Tell a story with photos. Create a memory page to add to a friend or relative’s scrapbook. Buy a package of blank scrapbook pages, and choose a theme, such as ‘my best friend,’‘sports car shows,’ or ‘when I was little.’ Design each page using stickers, markers, colored pencils, construction paper, photos, magazine pictures, and fun sayings or descriptions that fit your theme. Service coupons. Offer a free evening of babysitting, a week of taking out the trash, making your sister’s bed, pet sitting, lawn mowing, ironing, or another task you can do. Shape decorative soaps. Grate bars of inexpensive white soap. Then mix approximately ½ cup of warm water with a cup of shredded soap. Add food coloring to the water to create colored soap. Knead the mixture, and add additional warm water as necessary until it forms like dough. Next, fill cookie cutters with the

mixture, or flatten it on a sheet of waxed paper, and trim into shapes. Let the soap dry slightly, then press with small leaves or other designs. Allow the decorative soaps to dry for 24 hours, flipping them occasionally. Design your own pens and pencils. Purchase sheets of large white labels and cut them into 1-½ inch strips. Design the strips with colored markers. Then wrap the design around the length of the pens or pencils. Personalize them by adding a smaller label to the center of the pencil with “World’s Greatest Grandma” or other catchy phrase. To protect your pencil design, wrap it with clear scotch tape. Make a placemat. Choose a subject of interest to your gift recipient, such as model cars or Barbie dolls. Clip pictures from magazines and catalogues, and glue them to an 11” x 17” sheet of paper. Overlap the pictures to create a collage, or spread them apart and share details about each. When you’re done, laminate the design with self-adhesive laminating sheets, or have it laminated at an office supply store.
Create bookmarks. Cut colored paper into 2” x 7” strips then design the strips with colored pencils and markers or fancy border clippings from magazines. Find out your gift recipient’s favorite author, artist or historical figure. Then look the person up in a book of quotations. Select a quote; type or write it out; and add it to the bookmark. Then laminate it for protection.

photographs or pictures from magazines. Trim the tattered edge, and then laminate for a durable glossy poster.
Construct a puzzle photo frame. Cut a piece of firm cardboard to your desired size of frame. Then ask an adult to trim out the center with a razor knife, leaving a 1” to 2” thick frame. Next, trace the outside edge of your frame onto another piece of thin cardboard, and cut it out. Place a sheet of colored paper between the two pieces of cardboard, and glue the paper and two pieces of cardboard together. Glue jigsaw puzzle pieces around the frame, overlapping each other to cover the entire thickness of the frame. When the frame is dry, brush a layer of glue over the puzzle pieces to prevent them from falling off. Stick your photo in the opening of the frame with double sided tape.
Compose a memory book. Buy a composition book from the office supply store, cover it with construction paper, then design and decorate the cover. Inside, write your memories of special times you’ve had with the person to whom you’ll present it. Memories might include a trip to the zoo, a favorite holiday celebration, a special gift, something funny, and lots of other experiences you’ve had together.

Produce glittery pens. Buy a package of pens and different colors of glitter. Pour glue onto a sheet of waxed paper. Food. Friends. Family. Football. Thanksgiving would be incomplete without any of them, but the most important is the holiday feast your family and friends have gathered to enjoy while the game plays in the background. Serving up a full holiday spread – from turkey to dessert – that is sure to bring everyone back for years to come is easy with these tips for every stage of the meal.
Pumpkin Pie Squares with Cinnamon Sugar Yogurt Topping Total time: 1 hour, 20 minutes Servings: 16 Crust: 1 cup graham cracker crumbs 1/2 cup old-fashioned oats 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup butter, melted 2 tablespoons low-fat milk cooking spray
From a Farm Family’s Table to Yours This perfectly pumpkin dessert is a tasty twist on a holiday favorite. From fourthgeneration dairy farmers – Ryan and Susan Anglin and their sons, Cody and Casey, of Triple A Farms in Bentonville, Arkansas – this savory dessert, featured in The Dairy Good Cookbook, is sure to become a tradition in your family, just as it is in the Anglin family. pumpkin spice 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup pecans, chopped Topping: 2 TBSP sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 cup plain nonfat yogurt Heat oven to 350˚ F. In large bowl, mix together graham cracker crumbs, oats, brown sugar, butter and milk. Press into thin layer in a 9-by-13-inch pan greased with cooking spray. Bake for 10 minutes. While crust is baking, in another bowl, beat together pumpkin through salt. Pour over crust and bake for 40 minutes or until set. Sprinkle pecans over filling and bake another 10-15 minutes or until center is set. Cool slightly in pan. Mix together sugar and cinnamon. Mix in yogurt. Top each square with 1 tablespoon yogurt topping. Turkey Day Tips The sight of a beautifully cooked, golden brown bird being brought to the table is one of the most memorable moments of any Thanksgiving gathering. Follow these tips to prepare the perfect centerpiece for your holiday meal: Thawing Your Turkey For every 5 pounds in weight, thaw in original wrapper for 24 hours in the refrigerator. Thaw faster by covering with cold water in the sink and soaking approximately 30 minutes per pound. Refrigerate as soon as thawed or cook immediately. For best quality, do not refreeze uncooked turkey. Roasting the Bird • Baste with extra virgin olive oil.

• Place breast-side-up on rack in shallow roasting pan. Cook in 325˚ F oven. • For an unstuffed turkey, place a stalk or two of celery, seasonings, a cut-up onion and a handful of parsley in the cavity to keep it moist. • Lay “tent” of foil loosely over turkey to prevent over-browning. • Turkey is done when meat thermometer is 180˚ F or when the red stem on the pop-up thermometer rises. • For easier carving, let turkey stand at room temperature for at least 20 minutes. More Ways to Make the Perfect Turkey Centerpiece Grilled: Grill 15-18 minutes per pound. Air in grill must be between 225-300˚ F. Deep Fat Fried: Cook 3-5 minutes per pound in 350˚ F oil. Air in smoker must be between 225-300˚ F. Have Your Sides and Eat Them Too While the turkey takes center stage on Thanksgiving, surrounding the centerpiece with a variety of delicious side dishes can take your turkey day to the next level. Here are a few popular sides to round out your table: Potatoes: While mashed potatoes and gravy are always a holiday hit, other serving options, such as roasted potatoes, scalloped potatoes or sweet potatoes, can add variety to a favorite traditional dish. Fruits and vegetables: From green bean casserole and cranberry sauce to roasted vegetables, corn pudding, candied yams and butternut squash, no table is full without a variety of fruits and veggies to choose from. Noodles: Outside of a traditional potato side, many turkey day tables offer pastabased sides, such as homemade turkey noodles, macaroni and cheese or pasta salad. Bread: No Thanksgiving meal can be complete without cornbread, rolls or biscuits – which can also be used to make miniature turkey sandwiches after the meal is over – and a holiday classic, stuffing. 7 Reasons to Drive to Your Holiday Destination If the approaching holidays have you seeing dollar signs and cringing to avoid the stress the season brings, you may be relieved to know there is one simple step to help bypass many of the common holiday headaches. Traveling by vehicle costs less, is more convenient and is not as stressful as flying, according to the Car Care Council. “With gas prices below $3 per gallon in many parts of the country, more and more travelers are realizing the economic and hassle-free benefits of driving to their holiday destination,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “A family of four can travel 1,000 miles roundtrip by car for about the cost of a single airline ticket, so driving is the sensible option.” In addition to direct cost savings, travel by car offers a number of practical advantages
24 November 2015 | PB Parenting |
over flying including: Flexible agenda. Without the demands of a flight schedule dictating your timeline, you have the ability to leave when you want. And on the open road, there is no captain asking you to remain seated, so when the need arises, you can simply stop and stretch without worry. Calling your own shots by car, you also won’t risk being hampered by airline weather delays. Skip the wait. Choose to travel by car and you can forget about waiting in long ticket counter and security lines. An added bonus, you’ll avoid driving in circles looking for an open parking space in the overflow lot miles from your terminal. No luggage fees. Dodge those hefty charges and load your car up with as much luggage as you want – including wrapped
gifts that don’t always make it through security intact. Ride in comfort. While air travel may be expedient, it often comes at the cost of legroom and overall comfort. Traveling by car also lets you forgo the company of strangers. Familiar wheels. If deplaning and collecting your baggage isn’t enough, getting behind the wheel of an unfamiliar rental car or cramming your belongings into an overpriced taxi may be the final straw for your sanity. Traveling in your own car ensures you know how to operate all the features for a safe and comfortable ride. Pet-friendly perks. Although some airlines allow pets to fly, the cost and logistics can be burdensome. Simply loading up your pet and their supplies in your vehicle is more convenient for you, and less likely to stress your four-legged friend. An expanded menu. Your hunger is in your own hands when you travel by car. Whether you’re grabbing a quick re-fueling snack on the go or sampling the local fare, traveling by car gives you more and better meal options. Before you set out, be sure your car is in tip-top shape for a safe holiday travel. Request a free copy of the Car Care Council’s Car Care Guide at www.carcare.org for tips on regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair. Source: Family Features
