12 Tips to Tame the Holiday Circus BY CHRISTA MELNYK HINES

Are holiday traditions, parties, volunteer commitments and shopping turning you into a frenzied ringmaster of a runaway circus train? For your sanity and for your health, put the brakes on the holiday rush. Here’s how. 1. Make a “Not-to-Do” List. Consciously leave a few activities off the program this year. Ellie Griffin, a feminine vitality coach, says this is one of her favorite ways to reduce holiday stress. “I love having my clients do this exercise because it makes them realize how much of what they do doesn’t have an affect on the big picture of their lives,” she says. 2. End a tradition. Let go of rituals that are more work than fun or are no longer meaningful. Attempting to turn the holiday season into the greatest show on earth could put your health at risk. According to the American Psychological Association, chronic stress can weaken

12 November 2014 | PB Parenting |

your immune system making it harder to recover from illness and can cause heart disease, obesity and depression. 3. Catch your zzz’s. You perform better when you are well-rested. Strive for seven to eight hours of sleep, which can help you cope better with stress. “Poor sleep habits keep you jittery, irritable and feeling like you’re just dragging yourself around,” says Rosalie Moscoe, author of Frazzled, Hurried Woman! Your Stress Relief Guide to Thriving...Not Merely Surviving. 4. Choreograph the chaos. Organize your shopping trips. Ask for help from your significant other. When possible, buy gifts whenever you are already out running errands. Make shipping a breeze by purchasing some gifts online. After pounding the pavement, reward yourself with dinner out, pizza delivery or a glass of wine.

5. Clown around. During the holiday rush try not to schedule every free moment. “By pursuing pleasure in her life, a woman can not only enjoy a more fulfilling life, but in the process increase production of oxytocin, a hormone crucial to lowering stress hormones,” Griffin says. Go through your calendar and block out 15 to 30 minutes each day to do something just for your personal enjoyment, like a manicure, lunch with a friend, yoga, a nap, or reading a book.

7. Rely on your safety net. “Ask for help! Get your family to help with cleaning up at home. Or, if you can, hire a cleaning person,” Moscoe says. “Take a break, be kind to yourself. There will always be something to finish––that’s life!” For casual parties, prepare the main dish and ask your friends if they can bring side items or desserts. 8. Revel in the moment. Duck out of the buzzing fluorescent lights and long lines. Take an evening stroll to breathe in the cooler air and admire the holiday lights illuminating the streets. Allow the movement to calm your mind without further stressing your body. 9. Feed yourself right. Hunger and exhaustion can bring out the tiger in anyone. Eat wholesome, good mood foods with protein for energy. “Don’t bring extra cookies or chocolate into the house in advance of the holidays,” Moscoe says. “This will make you cranky,

tired and cause fluctuations in blood sugar. 10. Plan for surprises. Keep tricks up your sleeve for managing those lastminute gift exchanges. While running errands, purchase small gifts that you can stash. And, go ahead and store those extra cookies in the freezer for drop-in visitors. 11. Simplify decor. Swap timeconsuming and expensive lights and holiday cartoon characters for homemade decorations. Try making luminaries with your kids. Draw a star or tree on a lunch-size paper bag. Punch holes into the design and fill the bag with sand. Light the bags with batterycharged tea lights. 12. Focus on the magic. Carefully consider what makes the holidays

special for you and your family. Ask your kids, too. Their answers may surprise you. Perhaps they would like to try building gingerbread houses this year or want to spend a toasty evening in their pajamas drinking hot chocolate and watching holiday specials. Most of all, resolve to bring your holidays from over the top to just right for you. Even one small change can make all the difference between anxiously counting the days until the show is over to living in the moment, celebrating more peace and joy with your family this season. Have Yourself a Merry Little Toddler 4 Tips to Limit Meltdowns BY COLLEEN WRIGHT

If jam-packed stores and the holiday hustle bring out your inner Grinch, imagine how your toddler will feel. Your agitation is sure to trickle down to your child. She may already be tired out from coping with schedule changes and new experiences—not to mention being expected to smile for photos, graciously open gifts on demand and self-entertain more than usual. Add in a generous helping of sugar and excitement, and she may end up decking more than the halls. Limit the meltdowns and help your toddler enjoy this special time in the following ways. Relax Your Expectations Who doesn’t have that “ideal” holiday mapped out in her mind? Then there’s the reality: your screaming child in the midst of the perfect family portrait, or the epic yank of hair that sends Pop-pop’s toupee flying. Kids will be themselves, no matter who’s around or how seamlessly we want

16 November 2014 | PB Parenting |

one particular day to go. While it’s great to set clear rules, putting too much pressure on toddlers to act perfectly is sure to backfire. If he doesn’t want to open Grandma’s gift before she leaves, why not wait? As an alternative, you can make a video of it later and send it to her. And if he’s too cranky for pictures, consider setting a date in the future to dress him up when he’s in a better mood. Take Time-Outs to Avoid Overstimulation While parties are fun and exciting, they can also be overwhelming. When you sense your toddler spiraling downward, remove her from the situation and give her some quiet time. Signs of overstimulation include avoiding eye contact, escaping by hiding under tables, blankets, etc., and disobeying established rules. Depending on where you are, taking time away could mean spending

some time in a quiet bedroom with a few toys, or taking a short ride in the car with a snack. If this isn’t enough and your toddler is in dire need of a nap or more down time, you’ve probably overscheduled the day or week. Take a look at your schedule and prioritize the activities that are most important. Let go of the rest. Your energetic, happy toddler will thank you for it. Prepare Your Toddler in Advance There are so many new experiences that come with the holidays. New home decorations, distant relatives, and the concept of giving and receiving gifts are just a few things toddlers are expected to handle. If you know what your toddler struggles with, you can reduce his stress by preparing him in advance for anything new coming his way. For example, if you think transforming your house with holiday decorations will scare or throw off your child, introduce decorations early, a little at a time, instead of decorating it all in one day. If greeting a room full of distant relatives will intimidate him, consider creating a photo album of all family members who will attend this year’s party. Starting a few weeks before the celebration, go through the album every so often, naming both familiar and unfamiliar faces so that your

toddler associates strangers with the relatives he knows well and loves. If he enjoys the album, he may want to bring it with him to the season’s get-togethers. Before relatives attempt a greeting that will frighten your child, you can prepare them too. Let Aunt Bessie know her nephew is slow to warm up but would love to chat or play a little later (if you think he would). Keep Rules and Routines in Place While you can’t change the time of your relative’s 3 p.m. holiday lunch, your toddler will handle changes like this much better if you maintain as much of your daily structure and routines as possible. Sleeping and eating schedules will be thrown off, but provide consistency where you can. Offer the healthy snacks your toddler usually eats, and keep rules about treats the same as they are at home. If you’re away for the holiday and always read three books before bed, bring them with you and keep up that routine. For young children especially, consistency is safe and comforting. Help your child cope with holiday chaos, and you just may have yourself a merry little toddler this season. Colleen Wright is a freelance writer looking forward to a peaceful holiday. Health & Wellness

When Sickness Comes For a Holiday BY LARA KRUPICKA

Iandt starts out with your child being tired looking a little under the weather.

But it’s the holiday season so you chalk it up to the extra activity and some richer foods than normal. Soon though, you realize what’s really happening. What’s happening is your child is sick and tomorrow is the big day. While we’d prefer not have to deal with it, the reality is most families face illness during a major holiday at some point in time. Given the right attitude and a good “Plan B,” you can still make holiday memories. Here are a few tips on celebrating through (and in spite of ) varying degrees of illness: Short-term Illness Sarah Williams’ family enjoyed Thanksgiving celebrations with relatives, but they still had a special event on the calendar when two of her children came down with the stomach flu. “Two days after Thanksgiving we had tickets to a play that my aunt had given them. They were going to be gone the whole day,” she explains. Instead they stayed home to allow the

18 November 2014 | PB Parenting |

sick children to recuperate. But rather than mope around the house, Williams planned a special activity: game day. Her three children each picked a favorite game and together they played all three. “It was fun. It actually forced us to do something we would not have done on a normal day,” Williams says. While not every family may be able to have a game day with their sick children, the holiday doesn’t have to be a complete bust. Follow your regular traditions, albeit in a more subdued form out of respect for the person who is ill. Include them as much as possible, while giving them space to simply be sick. Your Plan B could include a second celebration once the child (or parent) has recovered. Because it’s not the actual holiday, it won’t be exactly the same. So don’t try to make it that way. Find opportunities to make it uniquely special - like the Williams’ game day. Hospital Stays and More Serious Illness No one wants to consider a hospital stay during a holiday. But sometimes

it can’t be avoided, whether due to an accidental injury or chronic illness. The best resource for coping with a special date on the calendar while in the hospital is the hospital staff. Find out from your child’s doctor or the hospital social worker what activities the hospital plans for the holiday. And discuss the expectations your family might have. “During the holiday season we work with families on an individual basis to encourage them to continue their traditions, just looking a little different,” says Rose Seelenbinder, a child life specialist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Different is an operative word in this case. There’s no getting around the fact that your child or other sick family member won’t be at home for the holiday. Don’t try to ignore it. Instead address hopes kids may have for the holiday.

Seelenbinder urges parents to be appropriately honest with their children. “We recognize it’s hard to be away from home and these are hard conversations for parents to have.” Encourage your child that “different” doesn’t have to be bad. In fact, with some planning on your part, it can be exceptionally memorable. “Think about ‘how can we translate what we do at home,’ in a different environment,” Seelinbinder says. It’s also important not to go overboard to compensate. It may seem like a good idea, but often ends up backfiring during the transition back home. Remember to give yourself space. Holidays can be crazy without a sickness. Add on the challenges of

caring for home while making frequent hospital visits and you’ll be primed for a meltdown. “What we really encourage parents to do is take a moment for themselves and look at their whole family and how they can support everyone,” says Seelinbinder. This may mean leaving the holiday preparation to someone else. Your Plan B could include engaging in the activities available through the hospital and keeping the bedside celebration simple. Focusing on the meaning behind the celebration and not the calendar date can also free your family up to observe the holiday in a more traditional sense once the hospital stay ends. Terminal Illness Over 1.6 million people use hospice services each year. So it’s not uncommon for a person to be approaching death before or during a holiday. This doesn’t make it any easier, but there are approaches parents can take to help. The first is to acknowledge the situation and how that impacts the holiday. “Don’t expect it to be the same as every other year,” says Dr. Don Schumacher, President and CEO of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. “You have to acknowledge that some change is coming. With every death, a new family is born. You have to figure out how to go forward.”

Schumacher suggests starting a new tradition right away. You don’t need to scrap your old traditions, but it is Fun Art Classes for All Ages! important to begin the transition. “Incorporate them in the discussion without saying they’ll be gone,” says Schumacher. “It shows them that you’re taking on the burden.” Make sure to include visits with the sick family member in your holiday observances. Schumacher points out how this can particularly aid children as they work through issues of separation. Holiday traditions provide a great avenue for sharing memories. Talking about those memories and the role the family member has played can be powerful for enabling the child to walk toward closure as death nears. When it comes to holiday preparations, accepting that there might come a time for “Plan B” can be a helpful process. Then when you encounter a sickness in your family, you won’t have to waste energy on shifting gears. You’ll be ready to find your own Plan B for adapting

your celebration. Holiday to Go Create a holiday basket that takes your tradition to the sick room, whether in your house or at a hospital. Include these elements to make the day special: • A traditional symbol of your family’s holiday (a cornucopia, miniature Christmas tree, or Menorah) • A holiday story book, particularly if it’s one you’ve enjoyed together before • A gift that can be enjoyed in bed, such as a new CD/music download • If the patient can eat, include one or two of their favorite holiday foods that are easy to transport, like a plate of cookies. Helping Kids Get Enough Sleep in a 24/7 World

BY CAROLYN JABS For growing children, adequate sleep is school, it’s a good idea to establish a every bit as important as nutritious food clear bedtime by counting backward and daily exercise. Yet ever since Edison 10-11 hours from when a child needs flipped on the first electric light, experts to be up in the morning (for current have been worrying about whether any details on how much sleep children of us are getting enough sleep. The best way to counteract these trends is to teach good sleep habits when children are little and parents are firmly in control. Throughout elementary

bedrooms be tech-free zones--no cellphones, video games or televisions. Period. Get an old-fashioned alarm clock, and insist that all devices observe a curfew in a room you can supervise. Make it a goal for everyone in the family to get an hour of tech-free time before bed. By high school, most teens will challenge these rules, so parents need new strategies. The most effective is to talk to teens about how plenty of sleep at night makes them happier during the day. The goal is to help children develop a genuine appreciation for the benefits of sleep so they will make healthy decisions even when you aren’t around. Here are some points worth making: How Much is Enough. Rather than arguing about how much sleep he or she needs, make your teen responsible

for behaviors associated with being well-rested. Can your child get up at the right time in the morning and do what needs to be done without nagging from you? Can he or she stay awake and pay attention at school? Is your teen able to get through most days without being hostile, grouchy or irritable—all common side effects of fatigue? Explain to your child that when the answer to all these questions is yes, you can back off about bedtime. If you see slippage in schedules, grades or moods, you’ll need to reassert control. The Risks of Too Little. Teens need to know about research showing that too little sleep has consequences for physical and mental health. In addition to the negative effects on mood and attention, sleep deprivation is also associated with higher blood pressure and an increase in stress hormones. Teens may also be interested to know

that some researchers have connected too little sleep to increased feelings of hunger which may lead to weight gain. Online Seductions. Teen aren’t going to want to hear this, but sleep experts are convinced that being online before bedtime makes it harder to fall asleep. For one thing, light is a stimulant that interferes with the sleep cycle. In addition, many online pastimes—competitive games, social media “drama”, provocative programs—activate emotions that thwart sleep. If your teen resists the idea of disconnecting at bedtime, talk about what’s going on. Some teens whose lives are heavily scheduled feel that their only unstructured time occurs after “lights out.” Others experience FOMO (fear of missing out) whenever they are offline. Understanding why your teen wants a phone under the pillow may help you work together to establish better boundaries and balance. Becoming Self Aware. Teens are more likely to make sleep a priority when they are aware of their own patterns, so encourage your child to keep a sleep diary. What time did he or she get into bed? How long did it take to fall asleep? What was happening immediately before bedtime? Did he or she wake up spontaneously (a sign that sleep was adequate)? When was your child tired during the day? Did he or she take a nap in the afternoon? How long? Did he or she wake up refreshed or groggy? Doing this for a week or two may help your teen make the connection

PB Travels The In-laws are Coming to Town BY COLLEEN WRIGHT

Does the thought of a week-long visit from your in-laws leave you feeling less than merry? No matter how much you enjoy your in-laws, entertaining houseguests during an already hectic time is stressful. Avoid the urge to run Grandma over with a reindeer by identifying some of the problems you might have ahead of time, and planning for peace. Keep It Short and Sweet Politely encourage your in-laws to plan for a short stay by mentioning your family’s busy holiday schedule and explaining that your time together may be limited. If you prefer they stay at a hotel, see if your spouse is willing to suggest a few nearby places they might enjoy. As a compromise, you can always suggest that your soon-tobe houseguests indulge in a night or two at a spa or bed & breakfast that’s especially appealing. Plan Small, Socially Acceptable “Escapes” If you know that you’ll need breaks, avoid feeling trapped by planning them into the schedule ahead of time. These might include a planned lunch with a friend, runs to the store, or a trip to the gym

each morning—even if you just end up sitting outside of it with a coffee and that 6-month old magazine you’ve been meaning to read. Make Pet Peeves Work for You Perhaps your mother-in-law is full of unsolicited advice, or your father-in-law is constantly pointing out needed home repairs. Instead of getting annoyed, get smart. Ask your overinvolved mother-inlaw for help with something that will be genuinely useful. This could be as simple as asking for a copy of your spouse’s favorite childhood recipe. If your father-in-law likes home projects and thinks something needs to be fixed, ask if he’d be interested in helping with the repair. This will keep him occupied and get some of your repairs done, too. Send Them Out It may not feel like a vacation to you, but your in-laws may see things differently. If they’re not retired, then they’ve invested both money and vacation days to spend the holiday with you. They might appreciate the chance to spend a small slice of time together, away from the chaos of children. Gifting them tickets to a

local show, museum, restaurant or other attraction are all great options. Bonus: you get time at home alone!

to do with the kids while you and hubby enjoy some quality time together. Make Them Feel Valued Set the right tone for the visit by doing things that let your in-laws know they’re valued. Every family does things differently, so a great way to show kindness is to incorporate one or more of their holiday traditions in your celebration. This could be as simple as planning holiday dinner at the

time they usually have it, or asking your inlaws to help make one of their much-loved holiday dishes. Preparing for problems in advance just might give you the boost of confidence you need to handle the added stress with grace, and help make your family’s holiday bright. Colleen Wright is the work-at-mom of a spirited four-year-old. She’s spent the past several holidays perfecting the above tips.

Community cares Girl Scout Troop Donates to John D. MacArthur Beach State Park Saturday morning, most of us are enjoying our coffee and reading the newspaper in our fluffy pink robe. But not the members of Girl Scout Troop #21045. They were up at John D. MacArthur Beach State Park bright and early to install the signs they designed and paid for, to make the park easier for visitors to navigate. Girl Scout Troop #21045, led by Troop Leader Susan Borland, purchased the plant signs to accompany the park’s self-guided plant brochure. The plant signs will help visitors easily identify and learn about the native plants along the Dune Trail. “The girl’s hard work and dedication to this project have earned them the Girl Scout Bronze Award,” said Borland. “I am extremely proud of the girls and their

accomplishments.” The Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. “They are a wonderful group of girls that possess all of the greatest qualities of Girl Scouts: leadership, cooperation, ambition and concern for the environment,” said Cheryl Houghtelin, Executive Director of the Friends of MacArthur Beach State Park. “It has been a pleasure to work with them,” she said. To explore opportunities to volunteer or partner with Girl Scouts, call (866) 727-4475 or visit www.gssef.org.

Pine Jog All Pro Dad’s Celebrate 5 Year Anniversary

Once a month, fathers at Pine Jog are doing something special — they set aside a morning to not only have breakfast with their children, but also brag a little bit. All Pro Dad is built on speaking about the importance of being a good father and getting fathers involved in their children’s education and lives, as was evidenced by over 400 in attendance. All Pro Dads also host a “Walk and Go Green”. This free event was scheduled as a family

fun walk to promote health, but grew into a health fair. Families are able to visit booths such as the Fire Department, Coast Guard, Sheriff’s Department, Drowning Prevention, School Food Services, Nutrition and Kids, Blood Pressure and Heart Rate Checks, and even a Mini Medical Class. Families walked a 3K through the FAU Environmental Education Center’s native Florida pine forest taking in nature as they exercised. Other events included Yoga, Karate, Zumba, and Boot Camp classes, Home Gardening, and a performance by a local Dance Group. For more information on starting your own All Pro Dad program please call Edgar Duran @ 561-655-2525 or visit their webpage www.
