Letter From The Publisher Greetings, The holidays are coming right up. First Thanksgiving, then Hanukkah followed by Christmas then top it all off with New Year’s. While the holidays can be fun times especially for the kids, they can also be stressful shopping for the perfect unique gift. When I go shopping, I love to find things that are unique as well as support local business owners. Supporting local businesses help keep your dollars local and boost our local economy. PB Parenting has put together our Holiday Gift Guide with some great giftgiving suggestions to help you finish your shopping early and stress-free. Being a mom of two, I know sometimes I get so busy that I need to step back and take a breath and be thankful for all that is around me. We should inspire our children to be grateful as well. Check out page 12 for tips from national parenting expert, Dr. Michele Borba on how to instill these values into our childrens’ lives (as well as our own). The holidays also make me think about giving back to the community. In our area, there are so many great non-profits that make a difference. Check out our first “Community Cares” spotlight, Speak Up For Kids of Palm Beach County, Inc. (page 18). You could make a difference and become a voice for a child who needs it. PB Parenting wishes you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving! Happy Parenting,

Simple ways to boost gratitude in kids and help them learn to count their blessings 365 days a year!
by MichelE Borba There’s something about the Thanksgiving season that turns on my “reflective switch” and makes me think a bit more about our children. We’re seeing an upsurge–even in a down economy–of kids who are a bit too spoiled, a bit too unappreciative, and a bit more ungrateful for all the good things life has to offer.
Of course, we want our kids to be happy and give them what they want. But have you noticed that sometimes our best intentions backfire? Instead of our kids being grateful for what they are given, they are disappointed or always seem to want “more?” In all fairness, there are a number of factors that curtail our kids from being appreciative about the good things in life. For starters: a relentless consumption-driven media that pushes kids to think they need more and a fast-paced lifestyle that leaves little time to help kids count their blessings. Sometimes it’s our guilt for not being home enough, or those competitive instincts that compel us to keep up with the Jones, so we lavish our kids with the latest and best of everything. Whatever the cause for the lack

of appreciation, there is one crucial reason we must change for our kids’ sake. Compelling research now proves that the happiest children are the ones who feel a sense of appreciation for life—and that’s regardless of their wealth or personal circumstances. Those studies show that when kids feel grateful they are actually more joyful, determined, optimistic, resilient, less stressed and even healthier. If you hope your child can achieve these traits (and what parent doesn’t) then you must replace any hint of an ungrateful attitude with gratitude. The good news is that there are simple proven strategies to make that change happen for your child. And there is no better time during the Thanksgiving holidays than to start that change by nurturing new habits. Here are a few ways to boost an attitude of gratitude in our children – 365 days a year! Simple Ways to Boost Gratitude in Kids Model Gratitude - Kids learn gratitude by seeing others display appreciation in everyday, unplanned moments. How often do your kids see you convey your
appreciation with hugs, words, or small notes to others? How often do you tell your kids how much you appreciate them? Tune up your attitude of gratitude so your kids are more likely to copy your examples. Set Limits - Having too much squelches appreciation. So fight the tendency to overindulge your child these next few weeks with too many things. Always giving kids what they want does not help kids learn to be grateful and appreciative of what they have. Thank Your Kids - Don’t overlook your kids’ daily thoughtful deeds. Be sure to tell them what they did that you appreciate so they are more likely to copy your example and send their own “appreciation messages” to others. Expose Children to the Less Fortunate Face-to-face experiences can go a long way in helping kids appreciate their blessings. So find ways for you and your child to do charitable work (playing with kids in a homeless shelter, reading to the blind, building low-cost housing, or delivering meals to the bed-ridden). A friend of mine set a family tradition years ago. Every Thanksgiving her family goes to a soup kitchen to help serve dinner to the less fortunate. Her children-now grown-say it was the best family memory of the holidays.

Say “Thank you!” - Parents who raise grateful kids don’t do so by accident. They expect their kids to be appreciative and saying, “thank you” is required from the time their kids learn to talk. Keep in mind that Pediatric Dentistry kids may need constant reminders: “Did Specializing in Dentistry forAdolescents Infants, and Children, Adolescents Specializing in Dentistry for Infants, Children, those with Special Health Care ne you remember to thank Jeff’s mom?” Don’t and those with Special Health Care needs overlook their slips: “You can call to thank Michael J. Count Your Blessings - Say a prayer of thanks together before meals. But extend it so your children learn to count their blessings every day and reflect upon the good things in their lives. Here are a few ideas: Review the Good Things. Help your children “Count their Blessings” every night by just reviewing all the things they are
grateful for. If you’re not doing this simple ritual, what better day to begin than now! Thank You ABC’s - This one is great for younger kids to do at the dinner table. You and your kids say the alphabet together, but for each letter include something you are grateful for: A, Aunt Helen; B, my brother; C, my cat and so on. Take it up one notch by having the person explain why he or she is grateful. Families with small kids rarely get beyond H, but the point is that you’re having fun together, and your kids are also learning to be appreciative. Older kids can reveal one

Community cares Not every child is lucky to have great parents in their lives. Unfortunate circumstances happen and they need someone to speak for them. Speak Up! For Kids of Palm Beach County, Inc. raises funds to support Palm Beach County’s Guardian ad Litem Program in their efforts to recruit, train and support Guardians ad Litem (GALs). GALs are court-appointed volunteers who serve as advocates for the best interests of abused, abandoned and neglected children involved in dependency court proceedings. What do GALs do? • Speak up for the best interests of the child • Gather information through regular visits with the child • Conduct interviews with people associated with the child, such as parents, caregivers and all social and medical service providers • Attend hearings on the child’s behalf • Make recommendations to the judge Who can become a GAL? Anyone who: •Possesses a strong desire to help children (no legal background is required)
Custom Bows, Accessories & Embroidery Mommy-Made in Palm Beach Custom Orders Welcomed!

•Demonstrates good judgment and common sense •Exhibits good communication skills •Provides favorable references and consents to a background check •Completes 30 hours of training •Is at least 21 years old • One of the most important things that GAL asks is for a commitment of at least one year. GALs are often the most consistent person in a child’s life during these trying events. On average, 6-8 hours a month per case is needed. How can you help? • Volunteer: We are in need of almost 50 GAL volunteers (visit www.galpbc.org or call 561-355-6224) But being a GAL isn’t for everyone. You can also volunteer by: • Joining Speak Up! for Kids of PBC (the fundraising support of the GAL Program www.speakupforkidspbc.org ) • Helping with administrative duties within the GAL Program office or volunteering other resources/talents • Promote awareness within your community • Support our fundraising events • Make a Donation to help fill the gap between GAL Program needs and state funding
Do you want to make a difference in the life of a child in Palm Beach County? Then please consider becoming a Guardian ad Litem (GAL). A GAL is a trained, court-appointed volunteer who advocates for the best interests of children who are abused, neglected, or abandoned and who are involved in dependency court proceedings. Children deserve and should have a voice in Flickr Twitter their lives and their futures. GALs are the children’s voice in Court. Get Involved @ www.galpbc.org 561-355-6224
