Letter From The Publisher Greetings, October is a fun month! Halloween is coming up and there are many events between now and Oct. 31 to enjoy with your family. Make sure to check out our calendar listings on pages 38-46. So you don’t miss future events, sign up for our weekly e-newsletter and get the latest news and events delivered to your inbox every Friday morning. Sign up at www.pbparenting. com. One of my five year old’s favorite things to do is to go to birthday parties (and of course have her own). I like going to them so I can “borrow” ideas for her next birthday. There are some really creative moms out there! At the end of the party, my daughter can’t wait to dig into the goodie bag to see what she got! Are you looking for some creative suggestions for your next goodie bag? Check out page 8 for some great ideas from Laura Amann as she re-thinks the treat bag. This issue can be a valuable resource for planning your party as we have a full directory of businesses ready to help you plan the perfect party from fun locations to entertainment to supplies and more. We hope you can “borrow” some ideas from us to help make your next party go smoothly! Happy Parenting!

Re-thinking Birthday Treat Bags BY LAURA AMANN

Looking to end the cycle of cheap trinkets and more candy? Here are some fun, easy and practical alternatives.

A

s if planning a birthday party for kids wasn’t tough enough, treat bags (those ubiquitous little goodie bags handed out at the end of the party) have gotten more elaborate and expensive over the years. If your child is over the age of five, you’ve probably seen your fill of bouncy balls that land under the couch, cheap games that break by the time you get home and stickers that end up on mirrors forever. The alternative is loads of candy given to kids already hopped up on birthday cake and ice cream. But the pressure is high and who wants to be the only parent (or only child) not handing out a goodie bag? At the same time, if you’re the kind of parent who balks at the time and creativity involved, to say nothing about the impact of goody bags on landfills, then maybe it’s time to re-think the treat bag. Take it down a notch and simplify your life (and other mom’s lives as well).

8 October 2014 | PB Parenting |

Less is more Resist the urge to give out lots of little trinkets and just go for one nicer item. Work with your party theme and be creative. Try personalizing something that kids would use and enjoy: a cute, reusable water bottle for kids to bring to sports practice, a flashlight or a fun baseball-type hat. The possibilities are endless once you start brainstorming. “Dinnerware actually makes a very practical party favor that both young kids and parents love,” explains Janet Doherty, who writes the popular blog, www.birthday-partiesfor-kids.com. She also loves two other practical party favor ideas: a bookmark and placemats. “Even kids paperback books can often be purchased fairly inexpensively. Just keep your eyes out for a book that coordinates with your child’s party theme.” Combine a craft and a treat Get a two-for-one bang and have the

kids decorate an item at the party that they then take home with them. Have them embellish a t-shirt, pillowcase or tote bag using fabric markers or fabric paint. Make a fleece scarf or hat. Or decorate the edges of a picture frame or flower pot with paint, stickers, shells or foam cut-outs. Have them design and embellish a doorknob hanger. Embrace the old-fashioned Jes Gordon of www.celebrations.com suggests digging up an old Polaroid camera, or borrowing one. “Then just get snap happy at the party. Take lots of pictures and let them take the pictures home!” Watching the film develop and seeing the old fashioned image emerge is a thrill for party goers of all ages. Maybe play some vinyl while you’re taking the shots to add atmosphere. Make a CD Burn a CD of your child’s favorite songs for each guest. You can slip it in an

FOR ONE-OF-A-KIND ADVENTURES ON THEIR BIRTHDAY, BRING YOUR KIDS TO AQUANUTS! For children ages 5-12, call 561-540-4833 to talk to our PartyNuts and we will tailor-make a birthday experience like no other!

www.aquanutskids.com/birthdays

inexpensive case and have your child decorate the cover or copy a photo. If you have a party theme, the songs could all relate to the theme. For instance, for an animal-lovers party the songs could all relate to the topic: Animal Crackers in My Soup, At the Codfish Ball, The Hippopotamus Song, etc. Give back to the earth Gordon also recommends giving the kids little potted plants that they can take home and nurture. They could even decorate the pots at the party and then fill them with dirt and add either little flowers or seeds. Hand out gift cards Think a local ice cream, hot dog, cookie or cookie spot, or McDonalds. Have your child personalize the gift card with stickers and a note.

Seasonal fun Find a cute coffee mug and fill it with a baggy that includes hot chocolate, marshmallows and a couple of candy canes for stirring. Fill a beach bucket with a shovel and sieve and other sand toys. If you have a literary or creative bunch, hand out a small notebook with a pen neatly tied on and add a few stickers for fun. The idea is to avoid the overload of useless stuff. Most of us have enough of that in our lives already. Birthday parties are stressful enough – make it easy on yourself and the other parents will thank you for it. Laura Amann is a freelance writer and editor with four kids. She has put together more birthday goodie bags than she cares to admit.

Parties on the Go: Great Places to Have Your Child’s Birthday Party BY LYNN DEAN

O

kay, I admit it. I hate hosting birthday parties. If that makes me a terrible mother, so be it! Frankly, the idea of 10 eight-year-olds running around my seemingly four-foot by four-foot living room doesn’t thrill me. We just don’t live in a space that is conducive to hosting parties. Over the years, I have come up with some ingenious places to host my children’s birthday parties. Here are some ideas that might help you take your party out of the house: 1. Make it and take it. Many craft, bead, pottery and fabric shops welcome the opportunity to entertain a group of children for a couple of hours. After all, the children of today are the customers of tomorrow. During the party, each child will have the opportunity to make an item that they can keep. Bring in a cake, plan for time to open presents, and it’s a done deal!

22 October 2014 | PB Parenting |

2. Amusement fun. Often, local amusement centers and putt-putt golf courses will allow you to host a party for a number of your child’s little friends. The party usually consists of cake, presents, and an hour of token fun or a round of golf. Don’t overlook places like Chuck-E-Cheese’s that offer a menu of goodies in addition to the cake. 3. Film fest. Why not take the crew out for a movie? Call ahead to find out about your favorite theater’s group pricing. Then pick a movie that everyone will enjoy. Make sure parents know which film the children will see. If you have any doubt about content, preview it first. To make this party a go, all you have to do is supply the popcorn and spring for the movie. Or, ask the party guests to buy their tickets in lieu of a gift. Whatever option your choose, you’re in for two blissfully quiet hours.

4. Tea for six. If you have a bunch of young ladies on your invite list, a trip to the local tea room might be a welcome diversion. Most cities have one or two places where you and the girls can pop in for crumpets and tea. Call ahead for details, and encourage your guests to dress for the occasion. 5. Sports courts. If you’re planning on inviting a rowdy bunch, why not give your guests the opportunity to expend all that energy in a healthy activity. You can take the kids bowling, to the batting cages, swimming at the local pool, skating, or horseback riding. Many public facilities even have rooms where you can serve goodies and open gifts. 6. Fan fare. If you live in, or near a city that has college or professional sports teams, you and your small fans can take in a game. Of course, you’ll have to

choose the sport based on the season. An afternoon of baseball, complete with hot dogs and soda is the perfect all American party in the summer time. Is that birthday stuck in the middle of winter? Ice hockey, basketball or football may be just the ticket. If the game is in another city, make sure you consider transportation arrangements in your planning process. 7. Learning Zone. Your local museums, zoos and historical sites offer another fun party alternative. Many have facilities and programs designed for just such an occasion. Guests have fun touring the grounds, exploring exhibits, and learning new things. Instead of a treat bag to take home, why not let each guest choose an inexpensive items from the gift shop. 8. Park it. Often overlooked, local parks and playgrounds offer an ideal location for your child’s birthday party. While you still must provide the food, the atmosphere itself provides the entertainment. How about a picnic? No playground around? Bring frisbees, balls, and other outdoor toys. Just be sure you have a contingency plan for bad weather.

BRCA1 and BRCA2 aren’t text message abbreviations. They are acronyms for breast cancer susceptibility gene 1 and breast cancer susceptibility gene 2. Harmful mutations, or changes, in these two genes have been linked to the development of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. BRCA mutations are not just for women. Men with the inherited change also have an increased risk of breast cancer. BRCA1 and BRCA2 normally protect against certain cancers. But a woman who has inherited a harmful mutation in either gene has a higher risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer at an early age. In addition, she may have multiple, close family members who have been diagnosed with these diseases. Harmful mutations in BRCA1 also may increase a woman’s chances of developing cervical, uterine, pancreatic and colon cancer. Detrimental changes in BRCA2 could increase the risk of melanoma, as well as pancreatic, stomach, gallbladder and bile duct cancer. For all American women, approximately seven percent will get breast cancer and about one percent will develop ovarian cancer by the age of 70. For American women with a BRCA1 or 2 mutation, those numbers jump to 70 percent and 30 percent, respectively. But inherited factors are not the only cause for breast

and ovarian cancers in families. Aging, the environment and lifestyle also can be contributing factors. It is also important to remember that not every woman who carries a harmful BRCA1 or 2 change will develop breast and/or ovarian cancer.

People with a high chance of having changes in the BRCA1 or 2 genes may benefit from genetic testing to learn more about their potential risks. They include those who have: • Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry. • A male relative with breast cancer. • A relative with both breast and ovarian cancer or a relative with cancer in both breasts. • Several relatives with either breast or ovarian cancer. • A relative diagnosed with breast cancer at age 50 or younger. Most people do not need BRCA testing since only about five to 10 percent of breast and ovarian cancers are thought to be hereditary. Testing is usually helpful when there is a strong family history of breast and ovarian cancer. Genetic testing is most practical when performed on a family member who has already had breast or ovarian cancer. Genetic testing requires drawing blood and then sending the sample to a laboratory

Breast Cancer Screening Is No Longer One Size Fits All Every woman’s risk of developing breast cancer is unique. Genetic testing can help you understand your level of risk and allow physicians to develop an individual risk profile coordinated with a personalized prevention plan. If you have close family members who have been diagnosed with this disease or have a personal history of cancer, you might benefit from genetic testing. that specializes in the tests. It may take at least several weeks to get the results. If results are positive, several actions can be taken to manage cancer risk. Surveillance requires careful screening and exams to catch the disease early enough so it can be successfully treated. Prophylactic surgery calls for removing healthy breasts, fallopian tubes or ovaries to reduce the chance of developing cancer. Chemoprevention involves taking drugs to lower the chances of getting cancer. Genetic testing can help people understand their risk for developing cancer. But it is not recommended for everyone. Are we there yet? Traveling with Children BY STEPHANIE VOZZA

The popularity of in-vehicle DVD players can be chalked up to four little words: Are we there yet? While popping in a movie may be an easy solution to travel-time boredom, it doesn’t have to be the sole entertainment for the trip. As parents, we spend weeks -- even months -- planning our family vacations, booking hotels, researching attractions and charting routes. It’s easy to overlook the fact that filling up your travel time takes planning, too. In today’s fast-paced world, car or plane rides are one of the rare opportunities families have to spend time together without outside distractions. Take advantage of this time by talking, playing games and reconnecting. If you need a conversation starter, books like “KidChat” by Paul Lowrie and Brett Nicholas offer fun and imaginative questions. For example: If you could ride on the back of any animal, which would you choose and why? Or, What is something most adults do that seems silly to you? Your child’s answers might surprise you, and sometimes the questions serve as a catalyst for more meaningful discussions.

32 October 2014 | PB Parenting |

Travel Bingo is a car ride no-brainer. Purchase a ready-made version or create your own. You’ll find a surprising number of other games are designed just for travel. Look for magnetic checkers or chess, card games such as “20 Questions,” or the “Brain Quest” series, which offers questions for all age groups. Rumba Games has a selection of “Trivia on the Road” games on CD with topics such as Pop Culture, Music, Sports, Television and Movies, all of which are geared for children age 12 and up. Listening to an audio book uses more imagination than watching a DVD and can also be enjoyed by the driver. Choose a book that was your childhood favorite; you’ll enjoy hearing it again and sharing it with your child. One of our family’s favorites is the “Encyclopedia Brown” series, which challenges families to solve short whodunit mysteries. Audio books are available at most libraries, or visit www.audiobooks.com where you can buy, rent or download books. Singing in the car is a lot like singing in the shower; it doesn’t matter if you’re in tune as long as you have fun. Bring your favorite CDs and print the lyrics at www.

lyrics.com. If your family likes karaoke, you might consider “All American Car-ioke,” by David Schiller, which includes a CD with 15 family sing-alongs as well as games and lyrics. Pack a box with some art supplies and encourage your child to make a vacation scrapbook, with scenes from the road. Bring along a lap desk to make it easy for your child to draw while traveling or create one with a cookie sheet and pillow. You can also give your child a disposable camera and get it developed before you start back home. They can work on an album on their way home and have a great show-and-tell for school. Create a story – and some laughs – by letting each family member take turns adding a few words or a sentence. Start with “Elsie was the talk of the barnyard because she was a cow who could … ” and see where your family takes it from there.

DVD players are great travel tools, especially if your journey is long. But with a little planning, families will find that getting there can be half the fun. Tricks For Getting Rid of Those Treats BY LARA KRUPICKA If you’re like me, Halloween goes like this: Wrangle kids into costumes. Take pictures. Tag along while kids run from house to house collecting candy. Occasionally fix costumes and hold heavy candy bags. Watch kids sort candy, count candy, eat candy. Wait for kids to fall asleep late, post sugar rush. Sneak candy from kids’ bags. It’s fun and exhausting, like any good celebration. And like many good celebrations, it leaves behind cleanup work - only in this case, the cleanup issue in question is how to dispose of all that candy. If you’ve scratched your head over this dilemma before, I have a few solutions for you. Let Them Eat Do you ever wonder why we let our children collect so many sweets if we have no intention of having them eat it all? After all, they do work hard (run around the neighborhood in clumsy getups) to get it. They “deserve” to enjoy some of it. But how much and when can vary widely depending on your view of sugary diets. Our house follows a closed cabinet policy. Our children know to ask before grabbing a snack. So when it comes to Halloween candy we typically say, “one piece.” The Halloween haul takes a long time to disappear, but we know they’re not ruining their teeth or their health. You

may dole out your candy piecemeal this way or attach a healthy-eating rule such as requiring your children to eat a piece of fruit before having any candy. Lunchtime provides another opportunity to whittle down your stockpile of treats. Let your child select a candy to pack in their lunch bag in place of a cookie or dessert. Or you can create a candy countdown for an upcoming event, like a holiday, a special visitor or vacation. Make paper links of construction paper cut into ½-inch wide by 3-inch long strips - one for each day of the countdown. Glue each strip into a loop, linking each successive loop into the one ahead before gluing. Tape or glue a piece of candy to each strip. Hang from the wall or ceiling. For the countdown, simply have your child tear off one loop with candy each day until the awaited day arrives. Give It Away There’s no reason to pitch good candy, particularly when there are those who’d love to receive a special treat. After you’ve sorted through your children’s stash to remove any broken or unwrapped pieces (and left a few for your kids), you can package them up to give away. To donate close to home, ask if your local food pantry takes candy. The families who

patronize pantries welcome sweets as much as our own kids do. Or if you’d like to support our military, they also welcome donations of candy for care packages. Operation Gratitude and Operation Shoebox are two of the larger non-profit organizations accepting donations of candy. Donations to Operation Gratitude can be sent to: Operation Gratitude/California Army National Guard 17330 Victory Boulevard Van Nuys, CA 91406 Attn: Rich Hernandez Send donations to Operation Shoebox at: Operation Shoebox PO Box 1465 Belleview, FL 34420 Trade or Sell Some dental offices have gotten creative in recent years. They realize the need to discourage excess consumption of sugary treats. But they also recognize the economics of collecting Halloween candy. So they bargain sweets out of kids’ homes by offering to “buy” Halloween candy. Some offer cash per pound, while others trade toys for quantities of candy. Ask if your dentist has a program like this or search Operation Gratitude’s database of participating dentists at: http://www. halloweencandybuyback.com/. If your dentist doesn’t do this but you feel a need to compensate your children for their (free) candy, consider your own buyback program. Offer to swap so many pounds of candy for a new toy, or better yet, book, they’ve been eyeing at the store. Just be sure once you’ve “bought” the candy you promptly remove it from your house before your children want it back - unless you are buying it for yourself.

Get Cooking You can also use up leftover Halloween candy the same way you use up leftover turkey at Thanksgiving: hide it in a recipe. This is easiest using chocolate candies. Simply break them into smaller pieces if necessary, and mix into chocolate chip cookie dough. Then bake. Or melt down chocolates for brownies or fondue. To make use of a wider variety of candies, set up an ice cream sundae bar. Crush larger candies and place into bowls to use as ice cream toppings. If you want to add more “nutrition” to your leftover candy, try the Snickers ® salad recipe below. The caramel and nuts in the candy, combined with apples, gives this salad the flavor of an old-fashioned taffy apple. Snickers® Salad 4 full-size Snickers® bars (or 9 miniatures) 4 apples, cut up 4 bananas, cut up 4-serving size vanilla instant pudding 1/3 c. milk 8 oz. non-dairy whipped topping Combine milk and pudding. Stir in whipped topping, then add the rest of the ingredients. Top with crumbled Snickers® to garnish. Chill before serving. With a strategy or two in hand for where the excess treats will go, you can relax this Halloween and let your children ring doorbell after doorbell. Because the only cleanup challenge you’ll face this year is where to hide the empty candy wrappers. Lara Krupicka is a freelance writer and mom to three trick-or-treaters. She appreciates that they put aside a few of her favorite treats when they sort their candy. | PBParenting.com |October 2014

Decrease the liquid in your recipe by 2 to 4 tablespoons for each cup of syrup used. Add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, unless your recipe already calls for buttermilk, sour milk or sour cream. Decrease your oven temperature by 25 degrees as batters containing maple tends to caramelize around the edges more quickly.

and egg and beat until evenly mixed. Add dry ingredients to the pumpkin mixture, incorporating with a spatula until just mixed. Divide batter in prepared muffin tins and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into a muffin comes out clean. Serve and enjoy! Recipe provided by Vermont Maple

Sugar Makers’ Association. The mission of the association is to preserve the sugaring tradition in Vermont, educate consumers about maple products and promote Vermont maple sugarhouses and products. For more information about the VMSMA, please visit: www.VermontMaple.org.
