Between costumes, candy holders, treat wrappers and plastic decorations, Halloween can quickly become a landfill’s worst nightmare. Multiply that by the number of kids you have and you have quite a bit of wasted junk on your conscience. Fortunately, just about anything you do can be done in a more ecologically responsible way, and it’s easy! Check out these tips to green your Halloween! Costumes: GreenHalloween.org has started National Costume Swap Day. Their great idea is that your kids trade costumes with friends instead of buying new ones. Other ideas to go green and save green: recycle among your own family members; use an old karate or ballet outfit; break out the princess dressup clothes. Google “Halloween costumes you can make at home for cheap” and start surfing. And don’t forget to check thrift stores and garage sales all year.
Treats: Just so we’re clear, I’m not of the camp that lumps eco-friendly with sugar-free. And even if you’re handing out healthy Halloween treats, chances are you’re still sending individually wrapped stuff into the world (oh, the trash all over my neighborhood!). Instead of doing that, consider handing out something that can be either useful or recycled. Ideas include pencils, erasers, quarters, crayons, juice boxes (recyclable cardboard), cool bandages, bookmarks or seed packets (edible flowers, herbs, etc.).
Decorations: Instead of buying decorations made in China that eat up batteries, consider strategically placing some hay bales in your yard or on your deck or front porch. Chrysanthemums, gourds, colorful corn, ghosts made of sheets stuffed with batting and scarecrows stuffed with hay (use some old clothes) are cheap and green choices. Nontoxic window paints are fun for kids to use on windows and doors. There are all kinds Trick or Treating: Grab that rechargeable or of Halloween crafts you can make out of LED shake flashlight and head out the door. materials you have around the house that can Wait! Don’t forget the decorated cloth bag be saved for next year or recycled later. Crafts you can reuse next year. An even cheaper like bottle cap pumpkin magnets, tin can route (and it’s still space- and eco-friendly) is bat treat holders and an egg carton animal to go retro and use a pillowcase or go modern nose mask can also be a great activity at your and use a cloth shopping bag. Pick up trash as Halloween party. you follow your trick-or-treaters and keep it in a separate bag or in the bottom of the stroller Pumpkins: Speaking of decorations, if you’re taking littles along, too. pumpkins are the best decoration out there, and you can even grow your own if

you have the space. Just toss a bunch of seeds in a large garden area and you’ll have freebies for next year. Otherwise, take an educational trip to a local pumpkin patch (www.PumpkinPatchesAndMore.org) so you support local farmers. Make sure you toast some pumpkin seeds (cinnamon sugar seeds rock!) and make a pie with the rest.

Parties: After you send out an Evite to the parents, start planning your green Halloween party. Instead of setting out individually wrapped treats, put carrots, orange slices and pretzels in bowls. Make sugar cookies in advance in cool Halloween shapes (bats, pumpkins, ghosts) and have the kids frost and decorate them with orange and black frosting. Throw some newspaper on the table, break out the nontoxic paints and decorate some pumpkins.

How to Make the Most of Your Parent-Teacher Conference Parent-teacher conference season is in full swing. These semi-annual meetings are a great opportunity to visit with the educational professionals who spend the most time with your child. This one-on-one time can give a parent real insight into the strengths and challenges their child faces. For many parents, this can be a surprisingly stressful time when questions about a student’s academic progress, behavior and even social interactions take center stage. If you get less-than-perfect news during a conference, what can you do? This information is power for a parent – it helps to see it as real-time “data” on your child’s learning style and areas where you can help your child improve. Some of the most frequent feedback from parent-teacher conferences fits under the umbrellas of: • The teacher says your child is distracted. • Parents are told their child's behavior is disruptive. • Your child has trouble organizing or returning homework. • Your student is not reading to grade level or is showing signs of a delay in math. Distractibility and difficulty remembering or returning homework can suggest that your child might need structure and support added to their routine. Working on organizational strategies and creating

routine can help with these issues, too. Behavior that disrupts the classroom can be challenging for teachers, other students and for you as a parent. Chances are, you see the same things at home. Depending on the severity of the issue, methods such as behavior charts, color-coded warning systems and daily progress reports sent home each day can make a big impact. Academic concerns often need to be dealt with in a very tailored way depending on the concern of both teachers and parents. Evaluating current test results, educator observations and your child’s own feedback can help bring concerns into sharper focus. Math and reading trouble can have multiple root causes. It may be as simple as your child needing eyeglasses, or more complex such as a cognitive delay or learning disability. Any concern raised by your child’s teacher deserves your attention and is worth discussing with a developmental expert. Parents are often surprised how small changes can make a big impact! If your child is struggling in school, the experts at Brain Balance Achievement Centers are available to help. Brain Balance offers a cuttingedge, drug-free approach to help children improve their ability to learn academically and socially. To find out if your child might benefit from the Brain Balance program, visit brainbalancecenters.com/locations/lakeworth or call (561) 429-4420.

Birthday Party Etiquette BY KERRIE MCLOUGHLIN
Navigating the world of children’s birthday parties can certainly be overwhelming. Do I have to invite my kid’s entire classroom these days? I love the ease of Evite, but is it rude? I love that my child is invited to so many parties, but what if I don’t have the cash for all those birthday presents? Don’t worry, parents, because I have your roadmap for avoiding birthday etiquette potholes. Happy Birthday … to your child! Let’s start with who to invite. Not everyone has the space/money to accommodate every child your kid wants to (or feels like they have to) invite. Find out the rule at your kid’s school for inviting politely (e.g., invite all the girls to a girl party, invite only who you want but send invitations discreetly and don’t blab about it, etc.). You can always give your child a set number that you are willing to have at the party, and have her choose wisely. Now that you have a number in mind, it’s time to hit the computer to set up that Facebook event and start inviting, right? Hold on a minute. Instead how about hitting the party store with your little birthday munchkin and have him pick out some themed invitations he can either fill out himself or at least help decorate? However …
12 October 2015 | PB Parenting |
… I am all for sending out electronic reminders to RSVP if you do not hear back within a few days before the party. You need an accurate count, after all, and you sending an email reminder or giving a quick phone call is no more rude than someone not sending their response in the first place. (note: I am not saying you should fight rude with rude!) Christine Glazier, mom of 6, says, “Call! I’m forgetful and/or my child has lost the invitation!” If someone asks what your kid wants for his birthday, it’s polite to say, “I’m sure anything your son picks out will be wonderful.” Of course you aren’t going to ask for a $200 building brick set, but you might want to throw out some general small gift ideas. If you have no idea, art supplies are usually a sure bet. Now you have to decide about the great Gift Opening Controversy. Do you have your kid open them at the party or wait until after? I say put the birthday kid in one chair and the gift bearer in another. Have your child open the gift bearer’s present while you snap a picture of them together. If the kids get bored, remind them cake is on the horizon. Oh, and don’t forget to remind your child about the basics of receiving gifts (say “thank you” even if you hate the gift or already have the same thing in 4 colors). Parents:
promptly put the gifts (especially gift cards and cash!) out of sight so new things don’t get broken or lost. These days many kids are either allergic to some food item or their parents won’t allow it. So even though we eat a steady diet of processed foods, I like to have some all natural ice cream (easy to find and not expensive) and sometimes even make an all natural or low-sugar cake if I’m feeling industrious that day. If an attendee is allergic to something, and if you can easily accommodate them, it’s just a thoughtful thing to do. It’s up to you if you want to send home goody bags or favors with the kids. Maybe you can’t afford them or just think they are ecologically ridiculous. At one party my daughter attended, the girls painted wooden birdhouses to take home. If you just love putting

together goody bags, however, feel free to go all out! To thank or not to thank? Remember that picture you snapped earlier? Have it printed and place it in a thank you note that your child writes (or maybe he can just “sign” it if he’s too small). Happy Birthday … to someone else’s child! It’s hard to watch your child get upset over not being invited to a party because, even as adults, we know how that feels. Explain to your child that maybe the parents of the birthday kid had to limit the number of guests and that it’s most likely nothing personal. What if Audrey came to your daughter’s party recently, but now you can’t attend Audrey’s party? Friends, you have enough to worry about in your life without keeping track of this sort of thing. Please don’t worry about taking a gift anyway unless you want to, unless this is a great friend of your child’s or unless you want to go broke. What if you have many more children than your friend does? Well, you have two choices here. You can either splurge on a big present for her kid
14 October 2015 | PB Parenting |
If you have more kids than just the one who was invited, ask the birthday child’s parent if you can, for instance, just drop off an older kid for the party. The hostess might be okay with you bringing your entire brood, or it might make her uncomfortable to add more chaos to the party. Just ask beforehand so you don’t show up with your huge family when you only RSVP’d for one. That would be rude. What to spend? Jill Connors, mom of 5, says, “I like to keep it close to $10, but will occasionally spend up to $20 ... it gets harder as the kids get older.” There is no magic number, but make sure your child participates in the process of picking out the gift. If your party budget is closer to zilch, consider baking something with your child to give to the birthday child or make a special craft as a gift. Angelina Lawson, mom of 1, shares, “When I see some fun toys in the Target clearance bins, I stock up. I use the Sunday comics as my tissue paper and reuse previous birthday bags – it’s the new trend.” If the party is at a place where there is an admission fee and you simply can’t afford it right now, it’s okay to turn down the invitation. You might want to have the birthday child over for a playdate another time to give them their gift and celebrate with them. Kerrie McLoughlin is the seasoned mom of 5 who writes about her controlled household chaos at TheKerrieShow.com.

Science Gets LifeSized And Life-Like With Dinosaurs Around The World! Those trembling ripples in your glass of water on November 1 presumably won’t be chalked up to an earthquake or sonic boom, according to experts at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. They maintain it’s likely they’re coming from a pack of dinosaurs – stomping into the West Palm Beach venue from November 1, 2015 through April 16, 2016. They will literally be “moving” into the venue, as the cutting edge exhibit looks like something out of a Spielberg film, featuring more than a dozen life-sized animatronic dinosaurs. The life-like replicas will roar, swing their tails and scratch their claws to the delight of tourists and locals all season. Some are so large that they have to be displayed outside the museum “Dinosaurs Around the World” invites guests to travel back to an age when dinosaurs ruled the planet – no time machine required. In addition to the pack that will be on display like a prehistoric zoo, the exhibit also features a multi-layered narrative, fossils, authentic casts, cutting-edge research and immersive design elements. The resulting story is a clearly painted picture about the prehistoric planet and its early inhabitants. “This is the biggest, most realistic dinosaur exhibit around,” says Lew Crampton, CEO of the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. “Our reptilian friends are back – and we are glad to have them as our guests!” And Crampton knows his dinosaurs. his leadership and hands-on digging, staff at the Burpee Museum in Illinois unearthed and re-assembled “Jane” the third most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton ever found. “Dinosaurs dominated our world for more than 150 million years, inspiring the imaginations of young and old alike,” he continued. “The immense size of many dinosaurs, their otherworldly appearance and their place in earth’s prehistory all contribute to their mystique. While dinosaurs may appear to us as monsters out of science fiction stories, their fossilized bones prove that they really lived. Our desire to see these animals up close -- to see them move and to hear them roar -- is not only a powerful attraction, but a totally unique, hands-on educational experience.” As Science Center guests grab their prehistoric passport to Pangea, the exhibit will help them discover how plate tectonics, land bridges and volcanic activity allowed dinosaurs to disperse to all corners of the globe, giving each of the seven continents its own unique selection of these giant reptiles. During their 172-million-year reign, dinosaurs adapted into a variety of forms due to the conditions of the areas in which they lived. The exhibition includes examples such as the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex of North America – like the one Crampton helped find -- the swift Velociraptor of the Gobi Desert, the massive herbivore
Amargasaurus from the tropical jungles of South America and many others. The exhibition poses questions to the visitor about the reign of the dinosaurs and helps them to discover how dinosaurs lived on each continent, how they interacted with each other, how geography impacted their behavior and diets and what the continents were really like at the time. Created in collaboration with awardwinning Paleontologist Gregory M. Erickson, “Dinosaurs Around the World” provides an immersive educational experience exploring a broad range of topics from the Mesozoic Era. Dr. Erickson is currently the curator for the Florida State University Museum and faculty at Florida State University. He holds research appointments with the American Museum of Natural History in New York, The Field Museum in Chicago and University of Alaska's Museum of the North in Fairbanks.
The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium features more than 50 hands-on educational exhibits, an 8,000 gallon fresh and salt water aquarium- featuring both local and exotic marine life, a digital planetarium, conservation research station, Florida exhibit hall, Pre-K focused “Discovery Center” and an interactive Everglades exhibit. All exhibits will be on display during “Dinosaurs Around the World's” special showing. Admission to “Dinosaurs Around the World” and the Science Center’s permanent exhibits will be $16.95 for adults, $12.95 for children aged 3 to 12, $14.95 for seniors aged 60 and older, and children under 3 are free. Planetarium shows and miniature golf are not included in general admission pricing. The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is located at 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach.
