Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Halloween is always a fun time of year! I love everyone getting dressed up and heading to trick or treat or parties! Check out page 14 for Halloween Safety tips so nothing “scary” happens! October means the return of Fun Fall Events! Check out all the fun Fall happenings in our monthly family events calendar starting on page 26. Speaking of scary. Starting a new business can be scary. Six years ago in October 2011 I started laying down the ground work to start up PB Parenting Magazine. At the time, I was a workfrom-home mom of a 2 year old girl with my own graphic design company and had been working for other publications for many years. I asked myself, why not start my own? Within 2 months I had the first issue ready to go to print and the wheel hasn’t stopped turning. 82 issues later we have grown into the magazine you are holding in your hand. All of this is possible because of my amazing team of moms, grandmas and grandpas (Jennifer, Stephanie, Steven, Liz , Erin, Sharon, Arlene and Lynn), that assist in editing, layout, photography, magazine delivery and more! Also please support PB Parenting’s advertisers, without them we wouldn’t be able to provide a FREE resource packed full of information and events! Finally, thank you to each and every one of our readers for your support these past six years and here is to six more! Happy Parenting,

Help your kids upgrade from a sippy cup with the Spill-Proof Contigo Tumbler. Your kid wants to upgrade from a sippy cup and drink from a tumbler just like you, but you’re nervous about spills. With the 14oz Spill-Proof Kids Tumbler, you both win! A no-spill valve in the straw makes it impossible to spill, and a seal around the straw offers extra protection against leaks. A soft grip bottom pad helps prevent this brightlypatterned tumbler from tipping over on the dinner table, and it also fits most car cup holders, making it the perfect companion. When you’re ready to wash it, the spill-proof straw twists apart for an easy clean; plus, the straw, lid, and body are top-rack dishwasher safe. Get ready to enter a no-spill zone! Available at major retailers. For more information go to www.gocontigo.com.

The ABC’s of Party Planning

Party Planning is a breeze and as easy as A-B-C with these helpful tips! Check out PB Parenting’s Party Planning Guide and Party Checklist on page 18 for more party planning help!

D - Discount Decorations: Your local Dollar Store is an excellent resource for party decorations on the cheap. You can typically find balloons, streamers and paper products.

A - Activities: You need one or two activities that will take you to cake time! Party experts recommend 90 minutes for children under 5. Two hours for ages over 5. Some free activities including playing freeze dance, musical chairs, hot potato, charades, red rover, simon says etc.

E - Set an End Time: Always err on the side of a shorter party, and note a specific end time on the invitation. As kids get older, most parents will expect to drop off their kids and pick them up at the end of the party. If you’d like some grown up assistants, be sure to arrange for them ahead of time.

B - Brothers (and Sisters!): Before age 7, inviting siblings is a nice gesture if you have the space and funds. However, other parents understand your predicament firsthand. If it’s not feasible, don’t be afraid to say no. If childcare is an issue for the sibling perhaps offer to have them drop the birthday guest off. C - Cake: Remember to buy candles, matches, and a knife to cut the birthday cake or keep it simple and serve cupcakes or doughnuts!

8 October 2017 | PB Parenting |

F - Food: Offer a variety of foods. Ordering a few pizzas takes care of the main course, but think about including fruit, nuts, cheese, crackers, or popcorn for snacking. If parents are dropping off children at the party, be sure you know about any food allergies. G - Skip the Goodie Bags: There! We said it! We love the generous spirit behind goodie bags and party favors, but we could all do without random tchotchkes that get played with for five seconds (if

that) and then stuffed in a drawer. How about hosting a simple craft activity and letting the result serve as the parting gift? Or taking a group photo and printing out copies (at the party or after) for each child to keep? H: Host at Home or Not? Ask yourself, are you willing to have the mess of an at-home party? An outside venue usually handles set up and clean-up which may be worth it to you. However, some people think hosting at home is cheaper (which it is if you keep it simple) but if you’re planning on renting a bounce house, entertainer, etc. it can end up being the same or even more costly than an outside venue. I - Skip the paper invite: Everyone is online these days (even grandmas have email and maybe even facebook!) Utilize any of the many free services out there or create a private facebook event!

left is pictures. Make sure to designate someone to. A cool keepsake is to have all your guests sign a photo mat and later put a photo from the party (This is great for first birthdays or other milestones). N- No Gifts: Instead of lugging a trunk full of presents home suggest NO GIFTS. If you are overflowing with toys and you want to try something new, host a book exchange. On the invite, ask that everyone bring a book in lieu of a gift, which they will then exchange for a new one. Kayden, Savannah, and Bella enjoy making music at Family Yoga Zen Zone in Delray Beach. They have a beautiful bright studio space that is available for all type of parties from baby showers to birthday parties and more! Photo by Lynn Studios. J- Joint Party and Team Up with a Friend. Does your child have a good buddy with a birthday in close proximity? Team up to reduce effort (and scheduling) for all! K - How many Kids? There are so many variations of how many kids to invite to the party. The old saying is to take your kids age and add one (for example, a 4-year-old would have 5 kids at his party). These days, though, parties tend to become much bigger than intended, and there’s no magic number for how many kids to invite. Instead, you have to figure out whether to include family and friends, and if you want an intimate party or a blowout bash. L - Limits: Know your limits and budgets. What is the max limit of kids your venue can accommodate. How much realistically do you want to spend on a party? Both invite list and financial budgets can get out of hand quick. M - Memories Take a lot of Photos. When the party is done all you have

O - Other guests: Be prepared if children are under 7 that the parents will be staying with their children make sure there are snacks, food and beverages for them. P - Pinterest: Regardless of your theme, there are lots of places to go for inspiration including Pinterest. By the time your child is 3 or so, they’ll have lots of input on what they want too, maybe too much input! Q - Quotes: If you are booking vendors (entertainers, bounce houses, food caterers, venues etc), don’t be afraid to call around and get multiple quotes. If you like another vendor but their quote was more, mention that their competition quoted you a cheaper cost and could they maybe match it. R- Relax: Don’t forget to take care of yourself in the midst of all this party planning. Make some me time maybe schedule a pedicure or some relax and read a book and take a break from the party stress. S - Skip! Consider Throwing Parties Every Few Years - Everyone should feel special on her birthday, but there’s no rule that says your kid has to have an elaborate party every year.

T - Write thank-you notes. While sending email invitations is standard these days, most guests still appreciate a good old-fashioned physical thankyou card—particularly one written by the birthday child. It can even be a picture if your child can’t write yet “It can be a scribble, a picture or as. Can’t stand the thought of more wasted paper inevitably ending up in the trash? Send a personalized thank-you email and include pictures of the party. U- Upcoming Events: Check calendars to make sure your party doesnt conlfict with holidays or maybe another classmates birthday. V - Vendors: It also helps to connect with the right vendors to make sure your party goes off without a hitch! Check out Page 18 for PB Parenting’s party planning guide which is also online all year long at pbparenting.com.

Y - Yes or No: A common complaint among parents are guests not responding to an invite. Don’t be afraid to send a reminder message via text or facebook asking for a yes or no answer. Sometimes moms and dads get busy and forget! Z - Zzzzz! Watch out for nap time! If you are hosting a party for the younger crowd be aware of nap time. Most parents recommend hosting a party right after nap time guaranteeing a few hours of cuteness before the witching hour hits. Whereever your party planning takes you, we hope that it is a successful and fun day!

Halloween Safety Tricks & Tips Halloween is an exciting time of year for kids, and to help ensure they have a safe holiday, here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

ALL DRESSED UP: • Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame. • Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-ortreat bags for greater visibility. • Because masks can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives. Hats should fit properly to prevent them from sliding over eyes. • When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories look for and purchase those with a label clearly indicating they are flame resistant.

14 October 2017 | PB Parenting |

If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of your child’s costume, make sure it is not sharp or too long. A child may be easily hurt by these accessories if he stumbles or trips. Obtain flashlights with fresh batteries for all children and their escorts. Do not use decorative contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from an eye care professional. While the packaging on decorative lenses will often make claims such as “one size fits all,” or “no need to see an eye specialist,” obtaining decorative contact lenses without a prescription is both dangerous and illegal. This can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders and infections, which may lead to permanent vision loss. Review with children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency

number) if they ever have an emergency or become lost. CARVING A NICHE: • Small children should never carve pumpkins. Children can draw a face with markers. Then parents can do the cutting. • Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin. If you do use a candle, a votive candle is safest. • Candlelit pumpkins should be placed on a sturdy table, away from curtains and other flammable objects, and should never be left unattended. HOME SAFE HOME: • To keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, parents should remove from the porch and front yard anything a child could trip over such as garden hoses, toys,

bikes and lawn decorations. Parents should check outdoor lights and replace burned-out bulbs. Wet leaves or snow should be swept from sidewalks and steps. Restrain pets so they do not inadvertently jump on or bite a trick-or-treater.

ON THE TRICK-OR-TREAT TRAIL: • A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds. • If your older children are going alone, plan and review the route that is acceptable to you. Agree on a specific time when they should return home. • Only go to homes with a porch light on and never enter a home or car for a treat. • Because pedestrian injuries are the most common injuries to children

on Halloween, remind Trick-orTreaters: Stay in a group and communicate where they will be going. Remember reflective tape for costumes and trick-or-treat bags. Carry a cellphone for quick communication. Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk. If no sidewalk is available, walk at the far edge of the roadway facing traffic. Never cut across yards or use alleys. Only cross the street as a group in established crosswalks (as recognized by local custom). Never cross between parked cars or out driveways. Don’t assume the right of way. Motorists may have trouble seeing Trick-or-Treaters. Just because one car stops, doesn’t mean others will!

Law enforcement authorities should be notified immediately of any suspicious or unlawful activity.

HEALTHY HALLOWEEN: • A good meal prior to parties and trick-or-treating will discourage youngsters from filling up on Halloween treats. • Consider purchasing non-food treats for those who visit your home, such as coloring books or pens and pencils. • Wait until children are home to sort and check treats. Though tampering is rare, a responsible adult should closely examine all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items. • Try to ration treats for the days following Halloween. ©2017 American Academy of Pediatrics

or until starting to brown and top is set. Place caramels, 2 tablespoons butter and remaining apple butter in microwavable bowl. Microwave on high 3-4 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds until smooth and melted. Pour caramel mixture evenly over partially baked crust. If caramel has cooled and set, microwave 1 minute until soft and pourable. Combine walnuts, coconut and 2 tablespoons melted butter with reserved cake mix mixture. Mix until crumbly. Break up topping and sprinkle evenly over caramel. Bake 16-18 minutes, or until topping is starting to brown. Cool completely before cutting into bars. Easy Apple Pie Bars Nonstick cooking spray 7 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and diced 1 cup Musselman’s Apple Butter 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract, divided 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 frozen pie crusts, defrosted 1 egg white 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 cup powdered sugar 2 tablespoons milk

Heat oven to 350 F. Grease 9-by-13-inch pan with nonstick cooking spray. Place diced apples in large mixing bowl. Add apple butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla and brown sugar. Mix until apples are evenly coated. Place one pie crust in bottom of greased pan. Slowly stretch out crust to cover pan’s bottom. Cut some edges off, if necessary. Spread apple filling evenly over crust. With rolling pin, roll second crust to make it same size as pan. Place second crust on top of apple pie filling and tuck down edges to cover. To make topping: In small bowl, whisk egg white until foamy and brush over crust. In another bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon, and sprinkle evenly over crust. Bake 50-60 minutes until crust is golden brown. Remove from oven and cool slightly before cutting. To make glaze: In small bowl, combine powdered sugar, milk and remaining vanilla, and whisk until smooth. Drizzle over cooled bars and serve. Source: Musselman’s Apple Butter/Family Features
