Also this handy reference is up year round on our website www.pbparenting.com and is a great resource when you are planning your children’s birthday parties! Speaking of birthdays! October is our birthday!! That is right, PB Parenting is SEVEN YEARS OLD! And we are just hitting our stride. I remember when I started planning the magazine in October 2011. At the time I was a work from home mom with just one 2 year old (LOL those were the days); now I have 3 kids and way more to manage All of this is possible because of my amazing team of moms, grandmas and grandpas (Jennifer, Stephanie, Steven, Liz , Erin, Sharon, Arlene and Lynn), that assist in editing, layout, photography, magazine delivery and more! Also please support PB Parenting’s advertisers, without them we wouldn’t be able to provide a FREE resource packed full of information and events! Finally, thank you to each and every one of our readers for your support these past seven years and here is to seven more! Happy Parenting,

Halloween Safety Tricks & Tips Halloween is an exciting time of year for kids, and to help ensure they have a safe holiday, here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). ALL DRESSED UP: • Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame. • Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility. • Because masks can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives. Hats should fit properly to prevent them from sliding over eyes. • When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories look for and purchase those with a label clearly indicating they are flame resistant. • If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of

your child’s costume, make sure it is not sharp or too long. A child may be easily hurt by these accessories if he stumbles or trips. Obtain flashlights with fresh batteries for all children and their escorts. Do not use decorative contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from an eye care professional. While the packaging on decorative lenses will often make claims such as “one size fits all,” or “no need to see an eye specialist,” obtaining decorative contact lenses without a prescription is both dangerous and illegal. This can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders and infections, which may lead to permanent vision loss. Review with children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they ever have an emergency or become lost.
CARVING A NICHE: • Small children should never carve pumpkins. Children can draw a face with markers. Then parents can do the cutting. • Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin. If you do use a candle, a votive candle is safest. • Candlelit pumpkins should be placed on a sturdy table, away from curtains and other flammable objects, and should never be left unattended. HOME SAFE HOME: • To keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, parents should remove from the porch and front yard anything a child could trip over such as garden hoses, toys, bikes and lawn decorations. • Parents should check outdoor lights and replace burned-out bulbs. • Wet leaves or snow should be swept from sidewalks and steps. • Restrain pets so they do not inadvertently jump on or bite a trickor-treater. ON THE TRICK-OR-TREAT TRAIL: • A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds. • If your older children are going alone, plan and review the route that is acceptable to you. Agree on a specific time when they should return home. • Only go to homes with a porch light on and never enter a home or car for a treat. BECAUSE PEDESTRIAN INJURIES ARE THE MOST COMMON INJURIES TO CHILDREN ON HALLOWEEN, REMIND TRICK-OR-TREATERS: • Stay in a group and communicate where they will be going. • Remember reflective tape for costumes and trick-or-treat bags.

Carry a cellphone for quick communication. Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk. If no sidewalk is available, walk at the far edge of the roadway facing traffic. Never cut across yards or use alleys. Only cross the street as a group in established crosswalks (as recognized by local custom). Never cross between parked cars or out driveways. Don’t assume the right of way.
Motorists may have trouble seeing Trick-or-Treaters. Just because one car stops, doesn’t mean others will! Law enforcement authorities should be notified immediately of any suspicious or unlawful activity.
HEALTHY HALLOWEEN: • A good meal prior to parties and trickor-treating will discourage youngsters from filling up on Halloween treats. • Consider purchasing non-food treats for those who visit your home, such as coloring books or pens and pencils. • Wait until children are home to sort and check treats. Though tampering is rare, a responsible adult should closely examine all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items. • Try to ration treats for the days following Halloween. ©2018 American Academy of Pediatrics

Keep Pets Safe this Halloween
Halloween isn’t just for humans; fourlegged friends have plenty of opportunity to get in on the fun, too. However, it’s important to take some pet precautions that allow the whole family to enjoy the holiday safely, as the costumes and excitement can be overwhelming and some of the candy is even dangerous.

If your pet will be joining the family while trick-or-treating, be sure they are visible to motorists by using a reflective collar, harness or leash.

Dogs can overheat easily, so ensure your dog’s clothing is not too bulky or heavy if the weather is warm. In the end, the top priority should be your pet’s comfort level.

Hazardous food and decorations “It’s fun to include our pets in our celebrations, but it’s also important to be aware of the dangers associated with Halloween to ensure their safety,” said Jennifer Freeman, DVM, PetSmart’s resident veterinarian and pet care expert. “Keep chocolate and candy out of paws’ reach. Xylitol, a sugar substitute found in candy, gum, mints and baked goods, is toxic to pets and can cause liver damage.”

establishing some rules for your family and any guests joining the festivities: • Xylitol can be extremely dangerous to pets, even in small amounts. Just 1/8 teaspoon can cause dangerously low blood sugar in dogs and 1/2 teaspoon can cause liver damage. If xylitol is consumed by your pet, take him or her to a veterinarian immediately. • Natural stimulants in chocolate can cause a range of symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea and abnormal heart rhythm. • Raisins may cause a toxic reaction in dogs from vomiting to kidney failure. • Cellophane, plastic and paper from candy wrappers and lollipop sticks can cause gastrointestinal upset. • As an alternative to sharing dangerous snacks, stock up on some seasonal dog-friendly treats and set out a pet-specific bowl.
Seasonal decorations can also pose a threat: • Fall decorations like jack-o’-lanterns can cause gastrointestinal upset. • Glow sticks can cause irritation, agitation and vomiting. • Hot wax and flames from candles can potentially burn your pet’s nose, tongue or tail. Don’t forget the fun Despite some concerns, Halloween can still provide fun moments for your pet: • Take your dog along for trick-ortreating. • Allow your four-legged friend to greet trick-or-treaters at the door. • Encourage friends to dress up their pets and join the festivities. Find more tips and tricks for keeping your pets safe this Halloween at PetSmart.com. (Family Features)

Party Planning Tips from A to Z!
Throwing a party? It’s as easy as A B C!
A is for Allergy - You don’t want to find out after an allergic reaction that one of your party guests can’t eat nuts or gluten. Ask for any dietary restrictions when people RSVP, and plan your party menu accordingly. B is for Bag - Skip the Goodie Bags! There! We said it! We love the generous spirit behind goodie bags and party favors, but we could all do without random tchotchkes that get played with for five seconds (if that) and then stuffed in a drawer. How about hosting a simple craft activity and letting the result serve as the parting gift? Or taking a group photo and printing out copies (at the party or after) for each child to keep? C is for Cake! There are many options for cake from your local grocery store to hiring a baker. Don’t wait until the day of or you are at the mercy of what is in the store. D is for Decorations - Keep it simple. It’s amazing how far a few balloons, streamers, or tissue paper balls go toward creating a festive atmosphere. E is for Evites! I love paper invites but Evites are simple! It also allow easy tracking of guests’ responses.
16 October 2018 | PB Parenting |
F is for Food - Offer a variety of foods. Ordering a few pizzas takes care of the main course, but think about including fruit, nuts, cheese, crackers, or popcorn for snacking. G is for Gifts or actually NO GIFTS - If you are overflowing with toys and you want to try something new this year, host a book exchange. On the invite, ask that everyone bring a book in lieu of a gift, which they will then exchange for a new one. Or, ask your friends to bring a toy and donate all gifts to a local children’s shelter. H is for for Hours - Keep it short! You need one or two activities that will take you to cake time! I is for Ice Cream, a great alternative to cake. J is for Just Family - Don’t be afraid to make your child’s party just a family affair or just family plus one or two friends. K is for Kids! How many should you invite? The general rule, often ignored: age plus one. That means four friends for a 3-year-old’s birthday. (If your child goes to daycare they can probably handle a few additional guests.) Once a child hits grade school they will have definite ideas of whom they want to invite just make sure it matches to your budget!
L is for Location Location Location! Let your child choose, but, make it central to your invitees & within your budget. M is for Music - Make an awesome playlist to set the mood, or save yourself some time and let Pandora or Spotify, do the job. N is for Noise -be aware if your child or a guest has sensory issues. Be aware of the amount of noise, smells, touch, and visual chaos in your party and adjust according to your child’s needs. O is for Outside - Outdoor parties give your guests the freedom to be active, run around and do messier crafts that you wouldn’t dare do inside!! P is for Photos. When the party is done all you have left is pictures. Make sure to designate someone to record the day. Q is for Quick - Party experts recommend 90 minutes for children under 5. Two hours for ages over 5.

But a few RSVPs are bound to get lost in the parenting chaos. Plan on a few extra portions of food and don’t worry about it.

10 Fantastic Birthday Party Gifts Under $15 BY REBECCA HASTINGS

Fall Fun with new Dinosaur Exhibit and Backyard Expansion at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium Dinosaur Invasion will be on display October 13, 2018, to April 21, 2019. This blockbuster exhibit will be “Bigger. Badder. More Teeth.”
Along the way, visitors will learn about tectonic plates, geological formations, the latest paleontological research, and interact with actual fossils and a dig pit.
Dinosaurs are returning to the South Florida Science Center, even bigger than before! Visitors of all ages are welcome to journey back millions of years and experience almost two dozen species during this indoor and outdoor expedition. Guests will see how they size up against life-size animatronic Triceratops, Raptors, Tyrannosaurus Rex, and even the giant Spinosaurus!

With a scale unmatched in animatronic dinosaur exhibitions, this exhibition features some of the world’s most unique and recently discovered dinosaurs. Fisher Family Science Trail is an eight-foot wide surface that winds through the grounds boasting responsive exhibits to encourage interaction and learning. A Physics Forest has been integrated into the far end of the trail. A giant Pendulum teaches visitors about the laws of motion and a Bottle Rocket Launch Pad helps guests’ imaginations take off. Permanent dinosaurs will greet guests along their travels. The Gem Panning Station inspires visitors to sift through water and soil to find their very own gemstones. Amidst the Solar Trees in the FPL Solarscape, “Bubbleology” is a station featuring tools to create enormous bubbles with soap and water. The Human Sundial invites guests to tell time with their shadow by standing on the corresponding date and using their body as a pointer. The process shines light on how shadows are created and how to tell time as long as the sun is out. A Splash Pad is the cornerstone of the outdoor space. The garden-themed entertainment area boasts 1,000 square feet of cool fun with sprayers shaped as flowers, leaves and even a streaming octopus to entertain people of all ages on those hot South Florida days. A Shark Tooth Excavation area begs visitors to sift through sand to find buried treasure. A nearby Berm provides outdoor seating and encourages little ones to roll down the “hill.” A Sensory and Music station engages guests to connect to the science of sound and the art of music. Admission to the newly-renovated backyard and Dinosaur Invasion is included with tickets to the Science Center, which are $17.95 for adults, $15.95 for seniors 60 and older, $13.95 for children 3-12 and free for children under 3 and members.

It’s a Palm Beach County not-so-scary Halloween tradition. Enjoy trick-or-treating all around the Zoo, little kids costume contests, strolling famous costume characters, DJ, and more. There’s an important conservation message at Boo at the Zoo, too. The candy we give away comes from manufacturers who belong to the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) or follow comparable sustainability practices. The harvesting of palm oil in Southeast Asia is one of the biggest threats to animals like our Malayan tigers. Most Boo at the Zoo activities are included in admission.
