Letter From The Publisher Greetings, The smell of a newborn baby is one of the sweetest smells. Luckily for me, my friends keep having babies. So I can hold them and cuddle them for a little bit before giving them back to their mom (especially if they need their diaper changed!) Even though I am officially out of diaper-stage, I remember that first year as one of the hardest. In this issue, we provide you with resources to help make that first year go smoother. If one of your friends is having a baby offer them some help, see what you can do for them. If they had a sleepless night, come over and watch the baby so they can get some rest, offer to cook them a meal or perhaps when the baby gets older offer to baby-sit so your friend and her husband can get out for a much needed date night. A great way to connect with other moms is to join Palm Beach County Moms on facebook (https://www. facebook.com/groups/pbcountymoms/). We are a 3,100 moms strong group of local moms. This is a great resource for the many questions that come up now and down the road. We are a few weeks into the new school year, time to start looking for after school enrichments to keep your little ones busy! Check out our guide beginning on page 18. Happy Parenting,

TempTraq™, the only wireless, wearable, intelligent Bluetooth® thermometer in the form of a soft comfortable patch to ease parents’ worries is now available on www.temptraq.com. It’s the first thermometer to continuously monitor body temperature for 24 hours and send alerts to mobile devices through the specially designed, free TempTraq app. TempTraq includes a free downloadable Apple® or Android™ compatible app. All parents have to do is press the “start” button to activate the thermometer and connect it to the app via the unique code provided. Then, apply the thin, flexible patch thermometer to the underarm of the child, similar to an adhesive bandage. As long as the caregiver is within range of the thermometer, they can easily review data and receive alerts, up to 40 feet away. Highly accurate, the TempTraq thermometer measures temperatures between 87.0 and 109.3°F. Unlike other devices that provide users with only one point of data and offer no continuous monitoring or alerts, the TempTraq app displays both real time and historical temperature data transmitted from the patch in graphical or tabular view, making it possible for caregivers to see fluctuations and quickly adapt treatment. For more information go to www.temptraq.com.

Surviving Your First Year as a Stay-at-Home Mom BY KERRIE MCLOUGHLIN

C ongratulations! You’ve taken the plunge into the zany SAHM (stay-at-home

mom) pool. While expecting your baby, you may have envisioned days of doing exactly what you wanted to do while your baby snoozed away, but you have probably realized by now that your tiny, new — permanent — houseguest is running the show. Now what? I’ll never forget the time a family member asked me, “Are you bored yet?” Melissa Stanton, mother of three and author of The Stay-at-Home Survival Guide, says. “When a spouse comes home at the end of the work day, sees the breakfast dishes still in the sink, and asks, ‘What did you do all day?’ it can be hard to answer. All you know is that although you never sat down or stopped ‘doing,’ you didn’t accomplish anything of substance. Every nose wiped, snack served, doctor appointment made and errand run prevents a SAHM from being able to, say, balance the checkbook, write the great American novel or just relax and be the lady of leisure many perceive SAHMs to be.”

the proverbial housewife with the sparkling house since I was home all day. Instead, I could barely keep my head above water,” says Tresa Cope, the pregnant mom of two preschoolers. Deal with the crazy-busy dilemma by accepting any offers of help that come your way. I’ve been known to cry tears of joy when someone drops off a new-baby meal at my place. And while you’re entertaining well-wishers, sneak off every now and then to do a dish or put a load of laundry in the dryer while they’re marveling over your child. If a friend starts to empty your dishwasher, don’t stop her! Melissa Stanton says, “Because many of the tasks involved in motherhood and housekeeping are mundane, women can fall into the trap of being busy but bored.”

Stay-at-home motherhood is a job, and no one in the paid workforce is on duty 24/7. To fight boredom, loneliness and frustration, SAHM women need to get out of the house, with kids in tow …So stock the diaper bag and grab a fellow new mom for Sure, you’ll have some spare time to work on a stroller walk around the neighborhood or long-neglected projects while Baby sleeps or mall to fit in some exercise with your social plays … just not as much as you expected. time. Indoor gyms, play areas in fast food After all, you’ll still need to handle about a restaurants and community centers where million other things. “I definitely didn’t think mommy groups meet to chat for “mommy I’d get behind on routine household tasks playdates” are especially great for the hot like closet cleaning. Instead, I hoped I’d be summer months and rainy days.

Speaking of mommy groups, Julie Dorset, mom of one, says, “What I think is most important is to find a group or club you can join, whether it’s MOPS International or just maybe your own group of friends. I think any group is very important for the first year you stay home because it gives you somewhere to go, something to look forward to and other moms to relate to.” To find other moms to connect with either in person or online, check out local facebook groups like Palm Beach County Moms with thousands of members talking about a multitude of topics and issues important to moms. You can always find other moms who are parenting like you, and it’s nice to know you’re not alone while caring for this tiny bundle who can’t even speak yet. Just because you spend your days with a pint-size cutie all day doesn’t mean your brain has completely turned to mush. And if you just need to get it all out of your head, blogging has become a great way to connect with other moms while also using your brain during those late nights when you can’t sleep or during your baby’s naptime. Jill Smokler, author of the blog ScaryMommy.com, says, “I did find my blog to be a savior as far as keeping me connected to people.” Nobody ever said your baby had to entirely run the show. If you’re normally an on-thego type of person, keep that up. You can incorporate your baby into your day in many different ways, such as exercising with him, taking him on errands with you while you play your favorite kind of music, or strapping him in a front pack or sling while you do household tasks. “The puzzle, for many SAHMs, is how we can have so much to do, and be so busy, yet feel bored — and frustrated about not getting anything done” shares Stanton. If you’re sick of trying to do it all and seem to be getting nowhere, my advice to you is to temporarily

10 September 2015 | PB Parenting |

surrender. I finally decided that I would sit and hold my son every time he fell asleep (and I’ve done it ever since with all my children!). Instead of Girls’ Night Out, recharging to me meant sitting around with my son while reading a book, watching TV, journaling or even taking a little snooze for myself. And don’t feel guilty about taking some time for yourself wherever you can grab it. This may mean running an errand alone, sitting in a coffee shop for an hour with a book, or going out on the town with friends. If you’re short on cash, trade babysitting with a friend so you can both get out of the house. Everyone wins – for free! This time of nonstop caring for an infant won’t last forever, so I’m giving you permission to cut yourself some slack. Nobody is putting pressure on you to lose the baby weight immediately or have an immaculate house, so enjoy yourself! Books on Being a SAHM (like you have time to read!) • •

The Birth Care Pavilion at West Boca Medical Center The birth of a baby is one of the most important moments in a parent’s life. That is why the labor and delivery team at West Boca Medical Center strives to do everything they can to ensure parents have a positive and memorable experience when their bundle of joy is born. West Boca offers the most acute level of care for babies in Boca Raton. The hospital has a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the highest designation in Florida, which is equipped to treat premature and/ or high-risk newborns. West Boca also recently unveiled its newly modernized maternity suites, where patients can enjoy a spa-like atmosphere and an enhanced birthing experience. In addition, the newly renovated Birth Care Pavilion consists of a Labor and Delivery Unit, Post-Partum Unit and a Newborn Nursery. “As one of the leading obstetric and maternity hospitals in the area, we are excited to complete the recent refurbishing of our Birth Care Pavilion,” said Mitch Feldman, CEO of West Boca Medical Center. “Our birthing suites offer the same awardwinning care as before, but now in a more private and comfortable atmosphere to help improve the overall labor and delivery experience.” The Birth Care Pavilion consists of 33 patient rooms that offer a soothing and luxurious ambience and are furnished with upscale vanities, wardrobes, window coverings and furniture. A recliner, sleep bench for overnight visitors, guest seating and a bedside cabinet can be found in every room. All bathrooms have also been updated with modern flooring and shower tile. The labor and delivery rooms have new baby warmers and bassinettes. Selected rooms also offer accommodations that

include workspace for dads and some of the semi-private post-partum rooms have been converted into private rooms. “The birthing experience is a special time for parents, and we want them to feel like they’re in a safe, family-centered environment,” said Marianne Sevcik, director of maternity services at West Boca Medical Center. In addition to the upscale suites, moms can take advantage of the hospital’s maternity education classes to help them get through the maternity process and beyond. West Boca offers a series of classes where pediatricians and nurses discuss topics like baby wellness, delivery, breast feeding and more. The hospital also offers the Newborn Channel, a television station available 24/7 that delivers essential neonatal and parenting information. Parents who enjoy connecting online can participate in West Boca Medical Center’s eNursery, a virtual community where you can share your baby’s photographs, as well as look through a list of the most popular baby names at the hospital. West Boca Medical Center is known for its 5-star maternity care. The hospital recently earned Healthgrades’ 2015 Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award™ and Labor and Delivery Excellence Award™ for its commitment to providing excellent care to women during childbirth and during and after gynecologic procedures. In fact, it is the only hospital to achieve both Maternity Excellence Awards in Palm Beach County. Boy or Girl? Gender Reveal Ideas W aiting up to twenty long weeks to find out the gender of your baby can seem

like an eternity! From throwing a party to spreading the news via mail or facebook, Gender Reveals are a hot new trend in spreading the news. Here are some ideas to tell everyone the gender of your baby. 1. Mystery Cake or Cupcakes Trust a close tight-lipped family friend with the sealed results of your ultrasound to take to a local baker and have a special cake made. From the outside it looks like a regular cake but once you cut inside the cake it will reveal the gender to you and your guests. Have a baker friend? You could even have someone make a cake by adding pink or blue food coloring to a yellow cake mix. 2. Photo Shoot Reveal Schedule a photo shoot with a local photographer to announce the gender of your baby using props such as pink or blue balloons, baby shoes, paint, umbrellas. You could also write your message out using scrabble pieces, blocks or drawing it in the sand. Once you get your photos back from the photographer share your news via print announcements and/or social media. If having a party, you can have it printed on canvas and simply cover it up so no one

14 September 2015 | PB Parenting |

can peek until you are ready to announce! 3. Older Sibling Reveal If you already have a child, buy or make a shirt that says, “I’m Having a Baby Brother” (or sister). If you are doing a photo shoot have them wear it during the shoot. If you are having a party, have the soon-to-be sibling keep their jacket zipped until it’s time for the big reveal. 4. Pet Announcement Have a fur baby? For all the pet lovers out there get your pet involved in the act! If you have a cat or dog for example, you can organize for them to come out to the guests at announcement time wearing something around their neck to announce the gender. It might be a pink or blue ribbon or bow. 5. Pin the Bow On Your Ultrasound Use your printer or go to a store that makes enlargements. Blow up the ultrasound picture and put it on the wall. Make a cutout of a pink bow and a blue bowtie and put a small loop of scotch tape on the back. When it comes time to reveal the gender you can stick the pink bow on baby’s head, or the blue bowtie at baby’s neck. If you’re not having a party, make small copies of the ultrasound and put the proper decoration on it before mailing it to your friends and family.

6. Confetti Pop Buy a balloon for every person at the gender reveal. Before you blow them up, put some pink or blue confetti inside each balloon. Hand everybody a balloon and a pin. Count to three and have everyone pop their balloon. The confetti will scatter and everyone will know if it’s a boy or a girl. 7. Pinata Party Another fun party idea is to fill the piñata beforehand with pink or blue candies. When the piñata is broken open, your baby’s gender will be revealed. 8. Make It a Game Have guests guess baby’s gender. At the end of the party, announce what it is. Everyone who guessed correctly gets a trinket to take home with them. 9. Silly String Pass out cans of pink or blue silly string to your friends and family. Don’t forget to wrap the cans in white paper so they don’t know the color inside! On the count of three, have your loved ones spray you and your spouse with silly string revealing your surprise! 10. Create a Custom T-shirt Create a shirt for mom-to-be to wear at the party. Have it say It’s a... With a checkbox next to Boy and Girl. At the party reveal by crossing off the checkbox with a permanent maker. Important Things To Consider Before Your Reveal Party • The ultrasound tech could get the gender wrong, especially in earlier scans before 20 weeks. So be sure you are confident with the results. • If you get a cake or cupcakes made for you, you’re relying on someone else and hoping there won’t be an error! If you want the gender to be a surprise find someone reputable to do it for you.

Finding a Doctor for Your New Baby Awaiting the birth of a baby is an

exciting time, and a busy one. Along with considering baby names and buying a crib, choosing the right health care provider should be on your to-do list, too. Your Options When it comes to medical care for kids, there are three types of qualified providers: pediatricians, family physicians, and pediatric nurse practitioners. Pediatricians Pediatrics is the medical specialty fully focused on the physical, emotional, and social health of children from birth through adolescence. The primary focus of pediatrics is on preventive health care. Pediatricians complete 4 years of medical school, followed by 3 years of pediatric residency. To become board certified, a pediatrician must pass a written examination given by the American Board of Pediatrics. To keep current on changes in children's health care, pediatricians must recertify by taking examinations every 7 years. They also must take a certain number of continuing medical education (CME)

courses each year to be eligible for license renewal in the state in which they practice. Some pediatricians have additional training in a subspecialty area such as cardiology, critical care or emergency medicine, or hematology. These specialists usually have 3 years of additional training after their residency to be board certified in their subspecialty. Family Physicians Family physicians must complete 3 years of residency after medical school. Family medicine residents train in pediatrics and several other areas such as internal medicine, orthopedics, and obstetrics and gynecology. They usually spend several months training in each area. Afterward, they're eligible to take the certifying examination of the American Board of Family Medicine. They're also required to earn CME credits and take periodic recertification exams. Because they train in many areas, family physicians are qualified to care for patients of all ages. This means your child would be able to see the same doctor from birth through adulthood. It also means that all members of your family can receive their

primary care from the same doctor. A family physician will know the medical histories of all family members and may also be more aware of the emotional and social issues within your family. When seeking a family physician, be sure to ask about age policies — some see only a few kids or don't see children younger than a certain age. Pediatric Nurse Practitioner A pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP) has earned a master's degree in nursing and can take medical histories, perform physical examinations on children, make medical diagnoses, write prescriptions, and provide counseling and treatment. Like pediatricians, PNPs may specialize in a particular area, such as neurology or endocrinology. PNPs work closely with doctors in hospitals, clinics, and private practices. Some parents might hesitate to choose a PNP, possibly worrying that the PNP is less

extensively trained in children's health care. These feelings are largely unwarranted. The presence of PNPs in the practice can have many advantages. Parents often find that PNPs spend more time with them than doctors discussing health and child care issues. Plus, if a PNP encounters a more complex medical problem, he or she is trained to consult the doctor. Still, if you want to see only the doctor or feel the doctor should be consulted after the PNP has seen your child, most practices will honor your request. When and How to Start Looking Your search for a health care provider should begin well before your baby's due date. Babies often come early and you'll want to be sure you've found someone whose style and personality work with your own. A good time to begin your search is about 3 months before the baby is expected. If you're in a managed health care plan, your

choice of participating doctors who provide primary care for children may be limited, so be sure to check the plan's online list (paper lists get outdated quickly). If you have questions about whether a provider participates in your plan or if you're interested in a doctor who isn't on the list, call the health plan directly. Also call if your child has any special medical needs that would require an out-of-network doctor. Once you know the limits of your health plan, compile a list of candidates from people you trust — your relatives, friends, neighbors, and coworkers who share your parenting philosophies. Your doctor, obstetrician, or nurse-midwife can also be a good source for recommendations. If you've recently moved to a new area, you may not have personal or social connections established to ask for referrals. In this case, consider contacting area hospitals or medical schools for recommendations or

ask the pediatric residents or nurses where they take their kids. You also can request a list of board-certified pediatricians from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and board-certified family physicians from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Local hospital "nurse line" referral services, the local medical society office, medical directories in public libraries, and the yellow pages also can be helpful. Once you have some recommendations, check them out more thoroughly. In each state, a medical board investigates complaints against doctors and may take disciplinary action, ranging from citing a doctor for nonpayment of certain administrative fees to suspending or revoking his or her license for criminal behavior. Disciplinary action is rare but, fortunately, very easy for parents to uncover. In most states, the information is public and is

posted by state medical boards on their websites. Interviewing Doctors Now you're ready to begin the interview process. Considering that this doctor will be the first to treat your baby, you'll want to be sure that you're comfortable with the doctor's personality, office staff, location, and environment. A prenatal appointment is an excellent opportunity for parents to ask questions and get acquainted with the office staff. During the interview, you should find out how the practice works by asking: •

What are the office hours? Flexibility of the doctor's schedule may be a concern, especially if you work outside the home; you may prefer a doctor who offers weekend and evening hours. Is this a solo or group practice? If it's a solo practice and your doctor is not available on weekends or evenings, what are the coverage arrangements? If it's a group practice, ask about the qualifications of the other doctors in the office. Who will see your child if your doctor is on vacation or otherwise unavailable? Does a PNP work in the office? How does he or she fit into the practice arrangement?

• Which hospitals is your doctor affiliated with? Will your doctor come to the hospital when you deliver to examine the baby? If your baby needs to be hospitalized, who will provide care there? • How does the office handle phone inquiries during and after hours? Are special times set aside for parents to call in with questions or is there an open advice line (usually staffed by a "phone nurse") during working hours? How are after-hours calls handled? How quickly can you expect a call back from the doctor on call after you've contacted the answering service? Are afterhours calls routed to a "nurse-on-call" system? This is a service that employs a staff of nurses to give parents advice about how to handle most common childhood illnesses. If your child's illness is thought to be serious, the nurse will transfer the call to your child's doctor or a covering physician, or advise you to go directly to the emergency room. Otherwise, a record of the call will be relayed to your doctor the next day. • Is email an option for communicating with your doctor? Does the practice use an electronic medical record, that may make it easier to transfer your child's health information, fill out forms, and schedule appointments? Does the practice have its own website that provides helpful advice and access to reliable health educational material, or may allow you to directly view your child's test results? • Will the doctor handle emergencies or will your child be referred to an emergency room or urgent care center? Are these facilities equipped to handle pediatric emergencies? • Are lab tests done in the office? Most offices can perform basic tests, such as complete blood counts, urine testing, and rapid strep tests rather than send samples out to a laboratory. • What are the payment policies? This

•

is especially important if you do not have prepaid health coverage. What are the fees for services? Must they be paid in full at the time of the visit or can payment plans be arranged? What are the policies regarding referrals to specialists in the event your child needs additional care? Is the doctor financially penalized by your health plan for referring patients to specialists, and if so, will this influence the doctor's referral practices?

If you are in a health management organization (HMO), it's important to ask how your doctor handles out-of-network referrals. Making a question checklist will help you organize your thoughts and be thorough during the interview. Some doctors offer group classes for expectant parents to learn about the practice and discuss newborn care, while others offer one-on-one interviews. Many insurance companies encourage these prenatal appointments or classes and will cover any cost involved; however, be sure to check with the doctor's office and your health plan first to avoid surprises. What the Doctor's Office Should Be Like The interview is a great time to observe office procedures. Check out the reception area: how many patients are waiting? More than a handful may mean overbooking or it could mean the doctor is spending extra time with a patient who needs it. Is there a place where sick kids can be separated from those in for a well visit? Is the area clean and child-friendly? Is the staff polite and considerate to patients in the waiting room and to people on the phone? While you're waiting, talk to other parents to determine whether they're satisfied with the care. Is their child comfortable with the doctor? Do the parents feel confident the doctor is thorough and competent? The overall atmosphere in the waiting area will

give you a good idea what the practice is like. The Doctor's Personality Another important aspect of the interview is getting a feel for the doctor's personality. Does he or she see parents as partners in a child's care? Is he or she patient and willing to explain things carefully? Do you get the impression the doctor would be supportive if you requested a second opinion? Are the doctor's age and gender important issues to you? Good communication between a doctor and parent is essential to building a good working relationship. Is the doctor a good listener who seems responsive to your concerns? Are you comfortable asking questions or do you feel intimidated? You also should be sure that your parenting style matches your doctor's in the important issues. How does the doctor feel about circumcision? Breastfeeding?

Alternative or integrative medicines or techniques? Use of antibiotics and other medications? Does the doctor focus on preventive care, including immunizations, child safety, and nutrition? Philosophical issues might not seem important before the birth but if you consider that this doctor may see your child for years to come, agreement on larger issues becomes more significant. Although you may feel overwhelmed with preparing for your baby's arrival, imagine how you'll feel after the baby is born. Choosing the right health care provider will help you feel confident your baby will be well cared for throughout childhood and beyond, and will ease some of the anxiety all new parents experience. © 1995- 2015. 14 Traditions to Start With Your Grandchildren BY KERRIE MCLOUGHLIN Grandparents, I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how important you are to your grandchild(ren). You are so much more than an occasional babysitter. You teach without it even seeming like you are, and your wisdom is soaked up better than any lecture from a parent. To keep your connection with them alive, read on for 14 traditions you can start with your grandchildren. 1. Explore your “stuff” with them. Why have you kept what you have over the years? Take the kids on a tour of your attic, basement and special treasures throughout the house. Kids learn so much about you and about history through this tradition. Baseball cards, music that is important to you, books, photos, autographs, special toys, journals. 2. Go fishing. Boys and girls alike are always up for a short bout of fishing, either on a boat, off a dock or in a nearby pond. They not only learn how to bait a hook and cast the line, but their faces light up when they actually catch a fish. 3. Take a girl on a day of beauty or do your own at home. My girls love it when Grandma Mac brushes their hair because she is so patient and gentle and talks to them so lovingly while doing it. A simple session of nail painting can be very relaxing and the perfect time for a girl-to-girl chat.

32 September 2015 | PB Parenting |

4. Do an activity that interests your grandchild. For instance, if you have a granddaughter who loves ballet, take her to see “The Nutcracker.” If your grandson loves trains, take him on a train ride. 5. Snuggle up and read some stories, no matter how old your grandchild is. Make up stories, create some and write them down in a notebook and illustrate them, too. Tell them what your child (their parent) was like at their age and some of the messes they got into. 6. Write each of your grandchildren a letter. You can write one when each is born, sharing your feelings about their birth and hopes for their future. You can write one later, giving advice and pointing out their strengths. Write one just for milestones or write one every year. 7. Teach a skill. Do you crochet, build furniture, paint, cook the best chicken and noodles in the state? 8. Make something together. The possibilities are endless: bake cookies, start a sewing, wood or other craft project, plant a tree or a pot of wildflowers. My husband’s grandma made wooden stick horses for all of her grandchildren, and they still have them. Now my kids play with them 40 years later. 9. Go on a nature walk or to a nearby park, zoo or nature center. If you aren’t physically

fit, now is a great time to get that way by going on a short nature hike with the kids or pushing them on the merry-go-round. If you just don’t have the energy, indoor children’s museums are a great place to sit and observe and participate with your grandchild while he plays (see #12). 10. Play a game, throw a ball. You can play something your grandchild wants to play, like Candyland, or tackle something you want to teach, like checkers, chess or gin rummy. While Poppy is always good for a game of marbles on the floor, Papa Dave makes them scream by hiding and then chasing them around the yard and house. 11. Call it a night. My sons loves shrimp, so my dad makes them a dinner of shrimp, potatoes and green beans and tops it off with a big bowl of sherbet while they watch a movie. Then they spend the night and wake up to eggs, hash browns, bacon and a day full of fun. 12. Take your grandchild on a trip for a great learning opportunity, and make some special memories in the process. It doesn’t need to be lengthy or costly. A day trip to a neat landmark or fun activity (see #9) would do the trick! 13. Volunteer together. My father-in-law takes my 10-year-old son to a food bank every few weeks for three hours of sorting donated food, then they go out to lunch. Head to www.VolunteerMatch.org to find all sorts of volunteer opportunities you can do with your grandchild. 14. Show up. Attend as many sports, Scouts, dance and other events as you can. This can be difficult if you have many grandchildren living close who are big into activities, so just do your best. Your presence is definitely looked forward to and appreciated. Kerrie McLoughlin (TheKerrieShow.com) feels very blessed that her 5 kids have all 6 of their grandparents living so close and that she gets to see her 4 grandparents regularly.
