Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Wow, time has flown by quickly since our last baby/maternity issue. In March, I was expecting my little guy pictured with me. Now it is almost 6 months later! We have pretty much adjusted to being a family of four with a toddler and an infant. It sure keeps us on our toes. The hardest part of the past 6 months is the lack of sleep. (Trust me, you don’t want me to take off those shades, very dark circles!) My first time around, I slept when the baby slept. This time I am up all night and day! My three year old is very active so there is no napping! So at best I am getting snippets of sleep. But I know this is only temporary and hope to be off to dreamland soon! I really love spending time with my son and daughter. My favorite part is seeing them interact together. I call her little momma, she loves to take care of him and he smiles at her and you can already see a sibling bond that is going to last a lifetime. Enjoy our baby/ maternity issue, hope you pick up some good tips and information for your young ones and young ones to-be! Happy Parenting!

Lilly’s Bowtique was created by local Palm Beach County mom, Denise Fernandez-Gonzales. She started by making bows for her daughter who loves to dress up and accessorize. Whenever they were out in public, she was always being stopped and asked where she got her bows. Some moms wanted to purchase them right off of Lilly’s head. She later expanded her business to custom embroidery and applique t-shirt and onesies.

My baby loves to be close to me and the best way to do that is use a sling or carrier. I recently received a Baby K’tan to try out and review. I am very familiar with baby-wearing. My daughter lived in a sling for 12 months and then later moved to a structured carrier for another 6 months. I was very eager to try a Baby K’tan with my son because it looked like the best of both worlds - the flexibility and softness of a sling but offering the holds of a structured carrier. After a short learning curve to figure out the various holds and which one would be best for my son’s age, we were off and running all over town.
The Baby K’tan is very similar to a wrap carrier without all the wrapping parts! Just two loops and a sash. It is quick and easy, no straps dragging on the ground or complicating tying. There are many holds that he can sit comfortably in. My son liked the kangaroo and explore hold a lot. Now that he is older and has better head control, he likes the hug position and the adventure position where he can look out at the world. We recently went on a trip, and it was nice to go through the airport with him in it. We didn’t even pack or drag a stroller through the airport. If you are uncertain about sizing I would to talk to their helpful customer service. When reading their sizing chart I am medium but due to my height they recommended a small carrier. It was a better fit for me. The material is super soft and reminds me of a soft t-shirt. It also washes up easily in the washer and dryer. I am glad that it is easy to clean. One of the only drawbacks of the carrier is that after you wear it the baby’s weight stretches it out, but a quick wash and tumble in the dryer and it snaps back to a nice snug fit. To learn more about the Baby K’tan check out their website www.babyktan.com. PBP Deal! Just for PB readers, use promo code BKPB15 at checkout for 15% off. What’s the Best Way to get My Baby to go to Sleep? B
abies do not have regular sleep cycles until about 6 months of age. While newborns sleep about 16 to 17 hours per day, they may only sleep 1 or 2 hours at a time. As babies get older, they need less sleep. However, different babies have different sleep needs. It is normal for a 6-month-old to wake up during the night but go back to sleep after a few minutes. Here are some suggestions that may help your baby (and you) sleep better at night. Keep your baby calm and quiet when you feed or change her during the night. Try not to stimulate or wake her too much. Make daytime playtime. Talking and playing with your baby during the day will help lengthen her awake times. This will help her sleep for longer periods during the night. Put your baby to bed when drowsy but still awake. This will help your baby learn to fall asleep on her own in her own
bed. Holding or rocking her until she is completely asleep may make it hard for her to go back to sleep if she wakes up during the night. Wait a few minutes before responding to your child’s fussing. See if she can fall back to sleep on her own. If she continues to cry, check on her, but don’t turn on the light, play with her, or pick her up. If she gets frantic or is unable to settle herself, consider what else might be bothering her. She may be hungry, wet or soiled, feverish, or otherwise not feeling well. Infant Sleep Patterns Throughout the First Year Why do some babies sleep through the night as early as two months of age, when others can take up to as long as 12 months? In the study, “Sleeping Through the Night: The Consolidation of SelfRegulated Sleep Across the First Year of Life,” published in the November 2010 issue of Pediatrics, parents of 75 normally developing infants completed sleep diaries for six days each month for 12 months. The accuracy of these reports was verified by a time-lapse video recorder. The fastest consolidation in infant sleep regulation occurred in the first 4 months of life. During this time, infants were most likely to meet three different criteria for sleeping through the night (midnight to 5.00 a.m., 8 hours, or 10:00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m.), and to have a mean longest self-regulated sleep period that exceeded eight hours. Most infants were sleeping through the night at 2 and 3 months of age, regardless of the criterion used. Prevention efforts should be focused in the first 3 months, beginning as early as 1 month for intervention to be in sync with the onset of sleeping through the night. Additional efforts are needed to determine the factors that precede and predict infant sleep issues.

Diaper need is a considerable issue facing families today that goes largely unrecognized. There are currently 5.7 million infants and toddlers in America, and more than 600,000 children under the age of 6 in Florida living in low income families, many of whom struggle to provide a necessary supply of diapers. The Junior League of Boca Raton Diaper Bank helps to address diaper need by collecting, storing and distributing free diapers. It obtains diapers through local diaper drives, in-kind donations by manufacturers and retailers, and by purchasing diapers through donated funds. Palm Beach residents can get involved in Diaper Need Awareness Week by hosting a diaper drive or diaper party, donating diapers (new and opened packages of diapers accepted) to community drop-off locations, donating dollars, or becoming a diaper drop off location.

any day any waterslide The Junior League of Boca Raton Diaper Bank has distributed over 145,000 diapers since the first distribution in August 2011. They do not distribute diapers to individuals, but rather through ten agencies chosen through an application process that provide diapers to their clients. Postpartum Depression - You are not Alone BY Jennifer Silliman
I remember every moment of finding
out I was pregnant; unfortunately I also remember every moment of when it all started to feel terribly wrong. Postpartum depression strikes 15% of women after childbirth, while 3-5% can experience symptoms while pregnant. The symptoms themselves can vary from mother to mother and it’s important to know that postpartum depression does not always present itself as sadness. When I initially knew something was wrong I started searching on the internet for answers. Most of what I read talked about “depression”, but this was not what I was experiencing. My symptoms included horrific thoughts that played like a broken record in mind. I eventually learned that I was suffering from postpartum OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). I was fortunate enough to have a psychiatrist that understood perinatal mood disorders and specifically postpartum OCD with intrusive thoughts. She immediately put me on medication and I saw an improvement within three days. Despite the intrusive thinking subsiding I still felt very much alone. I yearned to find other mothers who had similar experiences. After a long search I found not one support group in Palm Beach County, so I vowed that when I recovered I would pay it forward. Through my volunteer efforts with PSI (Postpartum Support International) I started the South Florida Postpartum Depression Support Network. This network includes support groups, obstetricians, psychiatrists, and therapists who specialize in perinatal mood disorders. Our support groups,
called momsTOmoms, are free of charge and offered in many locations around Palm Beach County. It’s important for mothers and families to know that they are not alone and that resources and help is available. For more information on the South Florida Postpartum Depression Network and momsTOmoms Support groups please visit www.momsTOmoms.org or contact Jennifer Silliman at JenniferSillimanPSI@yahoo.com or 561-444-9246.
