Letter From The Publisher Greetings, I miss a little cuddly newborn baby, not enough to have another one though. Luckily for me, my friends keep having babies. So I can hold them and cuddle them for a little bit before giving them back to their mom! Just like my favorite cutie to cuddle with, Easton, born July 5th! He loves to take long naps on me and his mom, Marisa, appreciates a little break. If you are like me and your friends are still having babies, you might wonder what you can do to help. Check out page 8 for 12 ways to support a new mom. The simplest of gestures are appreciated. I remember that first year as one of the hardest. Offer them some help, see what you can do for them. If they had a sleepless night, come over and watch the baby so they can get some rest, offer to cook them a meal or perhaps when the baby gets older offer to baby-sit so your friend and her husband can get out for a much needed date night. We are a few weeks into the new school year, time to start looking for after school enrichments to keep your little ones busy! Check out our guide beginning on page 20. Happy Parenting,

12 Ways to Support a New Mom BY SARAH LYONS Adjusting to having a new baby in the house can be difficult for the whole family. Sleepless nights and a change in routine can leave mom feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Offering support to a family with a new baby can help them adjust to their new normal. Often when you ask, mom isn’t able to think of the exact way she needs help. Here are some ideas: Stop by the store Going to the store with a newborn and possibly older children for the first time can be a daunting task. Offer to pick up a few things the family needs. This is especially easy if you will be out running errands already. Many grocery stores now offer drive through pick up. Have the family order and pay for groceries online, then pick them up and deliver them. Helping to put them away would be an extra bonus. Help around the house Sweep the floor, fold laundry, vacuum,

or do dishes. Even a little bit of tidying up can make a big difference. A clean house during a time of transition can bring order to a time that feels chaotic. However, mom may prefer to clean herself. Offer to care for the baby and other children while she works on a household project. Come when others don’t Not all new moms are “new moms”. Families that are adding their second, third, or fourth child need help just as much as first time moms, if not more. When there are older children there is no time for resting when the baby rests. Older children do not stop activities just because a new baby has arrived and mom and dad are tired. It can be very difficult to entertain a toddler while mom is nursing or changing diapers. Offer to take care of the older children for mom or offer to take care of baby so she can spend some alone time with her older children.

Provide a meal Friends and family often send versatile casseroles like lasagna after the new baby is home. Try thinking outside the 13x9 pan. Why not bring the family the fixings for breakfast and lunch rather than just dinner? Stock the freezer with easy, ready to make items like pizza, pasta dishes, soups and crock pot meals. Then the family can pull something out of the freezer when they are not up for cooking. Crunched for time or don’t feel like making an extra meal? Bring the family their favorite take out or send a gift card. Set up a train When one meal just doesn’t cover it, set up a meal train using websites like www.signupgenius.com or www. takethemameal.com. Discuss with the family the most convenient dates and times to deliver meals and solicit friends to fill all the open spots. Social media is

a great place to recruit people you might not think to ask. Let her shower A new mom may feel she doesn’t have time for basic things like a shower, rest, or time to eat a meal. One of the simplest ways to help a new mom is to hold the baby and watch the other children while she eats lunch, enjoys a relaxing shower, or takes a short nap. When mom is rested, fed, and freshened up, it can really make her feel ready to take on the rest of the day. Help with the older kids Show support by offering to pick up the older kids, even if it’s just for a couple hours. If you are taking your own children to the park, swing by and pick up her’s for the afternoon. Driving the kids to school or activities is also a big help for a family with a new baby. Time alone with baby may be just what mom needs.

Ask about her birth story Giving birth is a huge milestone, an experience no mom will ever forget. Every birth has a story and many times, there aren’t a lot of chances to tell it. Ask about her birth story and listen. Becoming a mom is a joyful, stressful, awe inspiring, and life changing experience. Telling the birth story helps women to process and embrace this new journey. Bring a gift for mom Many people bring gifts for the baby, but mom is usually the one doing all the work. Bring a snack or treat for mom to enjoy. Other great gifts are ones that pamper mom or make her feel beautiful and comfortable in her postpartum body. Lotion, perfume, a new nightgown, or slippers are some good ideas. A delivery of flowers is another great way to bring cheer and make mom feel special.

Don’t stay too long Families who have newborns generally like to have company, especially if they pitch in around the house and with the kids. However, don’t overstay your welcome. New parents tire easily. Visit the family, bring a meal, and help out but watch for clues from mom as to when the family would like some alone time. Take her somewhere Mom may not be able to drive for a few weeks after birth. Offer to take her on errands or just out for coffee. Being able to get out of the house can do wonders for someone’s attitude. Don’t give advice An important tip for anyone chatting with a new mom is to listen but don’t give advice unless you are asked. It can be frustrating and overwhelming to get unsolicited advice from everyone she bumps into. It’s important to ask mom what would help her. Would she prefer to have help with housework? Would she like you to hold the baby while she gets some things done? Some moms would prefer to have someone to chat with for awhile and some moms may want to get out of the house for a bit. Offer several options and see what sounds most appealing to the new mom. Any offer to help is always appreciated by a family adjusting to having a new baby in the house. Sarah Lyons, mom of six, has learned first hand what it is like to adjust to a new baby in the house. She is so grateful for the family and friends that helped her as each baby came home and loves to return the favor to others. PB Parenting Loves To Party! WP Newborns Preparing Kids The arrival of a new baby can bring many changes to a family. Parents spend a lot of energy on preparations, and after the baby arrives, much of the family’s attention involves caring for the newborn. All this change can be hard for older siblings to handle. It’s common for them to feel jealousy toward the newborn and to react to the upheaval by acting out. But parents can prepare kids for an addition to the family. Discussing the pregnancy in terms that make sense to kids, making some arrangements, and including kids in the care of the newborn can make things easier for everyone. During Pregnancy To tell a child about an impending sibling, consider your own comfort level and your child’s maturity level. Preschoolers, for example, may not grasp concepts of time, so it might not mean much if you say that the baby will arrive in a few months. It may be more useful to explain that the baby will arrive in a particular season, such as winter or when it’s cold outside. How much detail should you provide? Let your child’s questions be your guide. For example, a 4-year-old child may ask: “Where do babies come from?” Despite how it sounds, the child isn’t asking you to explain

Preparing Your Child for a New Sibling sex but probably wants to know where, literally, they come from. It may be enough to explain: “The baby comes from the uterus, which is inside the mother’s belly.” A child who wants to know more will ask. If your child shows more interest in the baby, you can encourage that by: • going through your child’s baby pictures • reading books about childbirth (make sure they’re age-appropriate) • visiting friends who have infants • packing a bag for the hospital • thinking of potential baby names • going to the doctor to hear the baby’s heartbeat Also look into sibling birth classes, which many hospitals offer to provide orientation for soon-to-be brothers and sisters. These classes can include lessons on how to hold a baby, explanations of how a baby is born, and opportunities for kids to discuss their feelings about having a new brother or sister. Planning for Childbirth As your due date draws near, make arrangements for older kids for the time when you’re in the hospital. Discuss these plans so kids know what to expect when the day arrives. Consider letting your child visit you in the hospital as soon as possible after the baby is born, ideally when no other visitors are

a positive way. Depending on their age, a big brother or sister may want to entertain the baby during a diaper change, help push the carriage, talk to the baby, or help dress, bathe, or burp the baby.

Try to keep routines as regular as possible in the days and weeks around the baby’s arrival. If you plan to make any room shifts to accommodate the baby, do it a few weeks If your child expresses no interest in the baby, don’t be alarmed and don’t force it. 7 Quick Tips For Keeping Your Child’s Afterschool Routine Positive & Balanced BY SANDI SCHWARTZ We all want to help our children succeed, and often wonder if we are doing too much or too little. We may think we are guiding them, but might actually be pressuring our kids too much and making them feel as if they are not good enough. Unfortunately, this can lead to stress and anxiety for our children, even at a very young age. To avoid going down that path, it is important that we offer a positive, balanced approach so they know they are supported, yet have the freedom to be independent as well. If you want to help your kids to do well in school without stressing them out too much,

16 September 2017 | PB Parenting |

here are some simple things you can do when they are at home: Create A Happy, Stress-Free Afterschool Routine From the moment your kids hop in the car afterschool, you can start to ease them into the transition from school to home. Ask them about their day and then provide them with a crucial break time involving healthy snacks and winding down time before they jump into their homework assignments. Have A Set Time For Homework Doing homework can be difficult at the best of times, especially when kids have

finished school and they want to play or relax. Having a set time for them to do homework will make it easier for them to get into the habit of it. For example, you could let them take a break first by engaging in some enriching activities like arts and crafts, exercise, mindfulness, or outdoor play before they get started on their homework. Also, be consistent. By ensuring they do their homework at the same time every day, it will become easier for them to sit down and get it down. Make Sure They Use The Right Resources By providing your kids with the right resources, you can encourage them to learn while they are at home. There is an abundance of educational tools online that can help them brush up on certain skills and view concepts they learn at school in a more interesting way. Take a trip to your local library to find

books that provide more detail about the subjects they are talking about in school. Or even visit a local science or art museum to enrich their learning experience.

Help Them If They Need It If your kids need help, then make sure you are there for them. Perhaps they are having a problem with a certain teacher, student, or subject. Be their voice and do something about it, even if it means addressing bullying. Sometimes, they may need help with their homework. Perhaps you could take a little time and sit down with them to figure out what they are struggling with. This will ensure that they do not get overwhelmed and anxious about getting it wrong. Have A Positive, Non-Pushy Attitude Toward Learning It is important that you have a positive,

non-pushy attitude towards your children’s learning experience. You want to inspire them, but do not nag. As soon as you nag them, you take all the fun out of it, and stress and anxiety will creep in. Make an effort to use positive language and make them feel good about school, even when they are struggling with a challenging subject or situation. Never Compare Try hard not to compare your child to other children, especially their siblings. The fact is, they all develop at different rates. Your child might be a little faster, or a little slower. Comparing them either way will only set them up for failure in the future, so make sure you focus on them and them alone. Ensure They Get Plenty Of Sleep Sleep plays a huge part in how well our kids do in school. Make sure they go to bed at a consistent time every night and have a comfortable environment to sleep in. That means shutting down electronic gadgets well before their bedtime, making sure the room is cool enough, and letting them sleep with their favorite stuffed animal or cozy blanket. (Preparing Your Child for a New Sibling, Continued from page 15) Also remind relatives and friends that your older child might want to talk about something other than the new baby. If relatives or friends ask how they can help, suggest a fun activity or something special for the older child. Continue to send your older child to childcare or to school, if you’re able. It’s normal to feel guilty about sending your older child away since now you’re home with the new baby (and if you’re home, you might feel that everyone should be). But keeping normal routines is helpful for siblings. And this time can give you precious one-on-one time with the baby that you might not otherwise have. When your older child comes home from childcare or school, plan for some quality family time. Dealing With Feelings With all of the changes that a new baby can bring, some older kids might struggle as

they try to adjust. Encourage older kids to talk about their feelings about the new baby. If a child cannot express those feelings, don’t be surprised if he or she tests limits or reverts to speaking in baby talk. If your child acts up, don’t bend the rules, but understand what feelings may be motivating that behavior. It could be a sign that your child needs more one-on-one time with you, but make it clear that although his or her feelings are important, they have to be expressed in appropriate ways. Also remind relatives and friends that your older child might want to talk about something other than the new baby. If relatives or friends ask how they can help, suggest a fun activity or something special for the older child. © 1995-2017 . The Nemours Foundation/ KidsHealth®. All rights reserved.
