How to Choose the Right Stroller
Expecting a new baby is so exciting! However, once the reality sets in and you actually begin to do research and shop around, it can also be very overwhelming! With so many options, it’s hard to know what will be the right fit for your family and your new addition. Perhaps the most important decision you make will be your stroller. You will take it with you everywhere. You will be pushing it, folding it and unfolding it a billion times until your child is past the toddler stage. It is all too common for many parents to become frustrated with their four-wheeled companion. When selecting a stroller, take these things into consideration: compare maneuverability, test how easy it is to adjust the backrest, fold, lift and carry the stroller. Make sure you can open and close it easily with one or two hands. Another feature to look for is how far down the canopy extends; you don’t want sun in your baby’s eyes. Mommy friendly features like a large storage basket and a cupholder are also a plus. It is very beneficial to try out strollers in a store. The experts at Diana Classic Children in North Palm Beach will make sure you select the perfect stroller for your family’s lifestyle. With personalized service you won’t find at a big box store, the trained staff at Diana Classic Children will teach you the

difference between the top strollers and will soon have you on your way to total stroller bliss! With a complete stroller showroom, you will have the opportunity to touch and test the product before you buy it. Another benefit of trying a stroller at the store is that you can test to see if it fits in your car’s trunk. Diana Classic Children now carryies Bugaboo, Bumbleride, Stokke, UPPABaby, Orbit and Valco Baby strollers. You may want to consider adding the Mesa car seat from UPPA Baby or the Maxi-Cosi that is compatible with nearly every premium stroller they carry. They also offer a complete baby registry program with perks such as completion discounts and the unique opportunity to allow your family and friends to make a contribution towards big ticket items such as your perfect stroller and nursery furniture! Your loved ones can shop your personal registry from the store or online and you can opt to have your gifts shipped straight to your doorstep. Diana Classic Children is located in the Crystal Tree Plaza at 1201 US Hwy 1, Suite 27 in North Palm Beach. Their hours are Tuesday-Saturday 10 am - 5:30 pm. Private appointments are available by calling 561.249.6319 or you can visit their newly relaunched website www. ThePetiteParade.com.

Community Cares Junior League of Boca Raton’s Diaper Bank helps struggling families by providing diapers. The Diaper Bank was founded in 2011 and is a project of the Junior League of Boca Raton. Their mission is to ensure that low income families in South Palm Beach and North Broward Counties have an adequate supply of diapers for their infants and toddlers. They also aim to build community awareness for the challenges that these families face, and reform public policy to ensure that diapers are included in “basic human needs.” Did you know? • 1 in 3 American moms struggles to provide enough diapers for their babies. • Moms struggling with diaper need have had to cut back on other basic essentials, like food, utilities, or child care, in order to provide diapers. • The closest organized diaper bank is on the West coast of Florida. • Infants require approximately 12 diapers per day and toddlers need 8. • A baby crying non-stop from being ia
soiled diaper for a prolonged period of time is more likely to be a victim of abuse. The Junior League of Boca Raton’s Diaper Bank has distributed: • 300,000 diapers last league year. • Last month alone they distributed 17,000 diapers to 10 agencies. The Diaper Bank is expanding and has been approved to serve 12 agencies for this upcoming league year and will be looking to add more depending on the number of donations they receive throughout the year. This upcoming league year they will have 5-9 diaper drives . Upcoming drives include the Saks Diaper drive the 2nd week of September during Diaper Awareness week, the Dr. Seuss event in 2014 and the JLBR diaper drive in 2014. For more information or to find out how to donate go to www. jlbrdiaperbank.org or email diaperbank@ jlbr.org.

Where to Find Classes, Workshops, and Support: You may already know that your local hospital offers a variety of childbirth classes. And you may also find classes listed in the adult education listings by the Palm Beach County school district. However, if you are looking for a more relaxed setting with more individual attention, there are certified educators who offer classes at their office or even in the comfort of your own home, tailoring classes to your individual needs. Regardless of what childbirth education option you are interested in, we recommend that you research your options and interview the instructor to make sure that the class or workshop you pick is right for you and in line with your birthing/parenting philosophies and preferences. Kristin Schwarz is a licensed midwife at The Wise Women’s Sanctuary. Wise Women’s is a place of peace, calm and relaxation. Health & Wellness 7 Tips for Choosing the Right OB-GYN
BY RACHAEL MOSHMAN I’d been having heavy bleeding for days before I called my gynecologist for an appointment. I was able to get an appointment that day, but spent hours waiting to be seen. When the doctor finally came in, he curtly asked a few questions, did a quick exam, called it a “missed pregnancy” and left the room.
Do you have any specific conditions or concerns? Are you pregnant or trying to conceive?
Lynn, a graphic designer, says her priorities have changed over time. “I’m done conceiving so I want someone to just help me stay healthy and write my Rx for birth control. When I was trying I had no idea what that meant. The nurse to conceive (and for both pregnancies) explained that it was more commonly it was really important to me to find known as a miscarriage. I thought my late out their policies for birth and delivery. period was due to stress. Pregnancy hadn’t Would ‘my’ doctor be the one delivering? even occurred to me. I was crushed. Or would I simply be at the mercy of the doctor on-call at the time?” Thankfully, a kind nurse explained what was happening to me since the doctor Ask around didn’t. I never returned to that OBSocial worker, Mary Ellen, asks her friends GYN office. for recommendations when seeking a new OB-GYN. She says, “It may seem A woman’s OB-GYN sees you at your awkward, but just ask. Most women are most vulnerable, both physically and happy to tell you who they see.” If you’re emotionally. which doctors tend to have patients with the most post-op complications. We also know which OB-GYN doctors specialize in specific issues such as pregnancy complications.” Make your wish list This is different from determining your needs. These are the items that aren’t deal breakers, but will score a doctor bonus points. I look for someone who is located within twenty minutes of my office and has early morning appointments, since I work full time. My sister prefers female doctors. Visit the office You can tell a lot about an office by observing the patients in the waiting room and the front office staff. Were you greeted when you walked in? If not, take a seat and see if anyone notices you. How long are patients waiting? Katrina, an occupational therapist assistant, quickly scratched a practice off her list of possibilities after observing for just a few minutes. “Several very pregnant women were complaining that they had been waiting two hours or more past their appointment time. The receptionist basically said it wasn’t her problem.” Schedule a consultation If an OB-GYN is reluctant to meet with

you and ask some questions, steer clear. You are considering hiring them as your doctor. An interview isn’t out of the question. Heidi, the mother of a teenage girl, says, “If you are not comfortable sitting across a desk from someone then you will not be comfortable with them examining you.” Trust your instincts Freelance writer, Kim, says, “I switched doctors because my OB-GYN was dismissive when I said I wanted to try natural remedies first.” Travel agent, Danielle, adds, “Many people don’t realize that an OB-GYN isn’t the only option when you’re pregnant. After some not so great experiences with an OB-GYN, I went with a professional midwife and loved every second!” If I had known these tips five years ago, perhaps I would have been with a more compassionate doctor when I found out I was experiencing a miscarriage. We rely on our OB-GYN to get us through some of the most delicate times of our life. We owe it to ourselves to find the right person for the job. Nutrition for the Expectant Mom BY JAMIE LOBER It should not come as a surprise that dietary choices can make or break a healthy mom or healthy baby. Once you are equipped with the knowledge of what your body needs, what foods to avoid or limit during pregnancy, how to handle food safely, deal with cravings and what to expect as far as weight gain, you will be able to make smarter choices about your health. Remember that your obstetrician is there for you every step of the way and you should not be afraid to address any questions or concerns with him. Just because you have probably heard the myth that you should be eating for two does not mean that you can dive in to junk food – but you do not have to give up your favorite treats either. The truth is a pregnant woman needs about 300 extra calories per day but the actual amount you need is based on your weight before pregnancy. As always, you should strive to eat from all five food groups daily which include grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy products and protein. Vitamins and minerals like calcium and folic acid can help to keep you and your baby in good health, so be sure to discuss that with your obstetrician. Be conscious of the way food is cooked so germs and chemicals do not creep up on you and adversely affect you or your infant’s health. Fish, eggs and raw meat
30 September 2013 | PB Parenting |
must be cooked fully and dairy products should read pasteurized to avoid food poisoning. Stay away from anything that contains mercury or caffeine so you do not pass the bad chemicals on to your baby. The March of Dimes states that you can eat up to 12 ounces of salmon or canned light tuna per week and that caffeine should be limited to 200 milligrams a day. Some expectant moms experience cravings which may be from hormone changes. If you crave something sweet, try to add citrus fruit or juice to flavor your meal. If you are looking for a delicious snack, see if there is a reduced fat option. Sometimes fresh fruit can help tame a sweet tooth. If your thoughts turn to forbidden foods, have distractions in mind like taking a walk or phoning a friend. Some deal with morning sickness and may not feel hungry at all. They should try to get fresh air, drink fluids like Gatorade, eat five or six small meals a day
so their stomach does not get totally empty or eat a few crackers or a light snack before slowly getting out of bed. Your obstetrician will probably give you a prenatal vitamin. It will contain folic acid which helps to prevent birth defects of the brain and spinal cord and also protects you against stroke and cancer. Iron is another important ingredient that is found in the vitamins because it helps develop muscles, prevents anemia and can lower the risk of preterm birth and low birth weight. Calcium works to ensure that the nervous, muscular and circulatory systems stay healthy and not having enough can lead to osteoporosis and bone breaks later in life. Last but not least, docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, is an omega-3 fatty acid that assists in supporting the development and function of the baby’s brain and eyes and women should get at least 200 milligrams of DHA per day. Know that every woman is different and therefore everyone’s body does not change in the same way. By following these tips and having a good support system in place, you can make wise decisions about nutrition and your baby will thank you. If you want to try some new foods, whether you are pregnant or not, you are welcome to come out to support the March of Dimes – Palm Beach Division on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center as they welcome chefs from the top restaurants at their Signature Chefs Auction. Jamie Lober is the Public Relations Chairman for the March of Dimes – Palm Beach Division and is a trusted source of information on pregnancy, birth defects and prematurity. How can you get financially ready for the arrival of a baby? BY DIANE J. BAIN, CFM, CRPC®, CSNA
Getting financially ready for the arrival
of a baby varies enormously according to your lifestyle and expectations. You can expend a significant amount of money in preparing for your new bundle of joy, or be extremely minimalist and frugal. Some variables are controllable, while others aren’t, and there are a few basic pieces of the financial puzzle that you should ideally have in place before you start a family. Here are some pointers to help prepare for the financial aspects of your new journey: • Assess current debt and come up with a payment plan to reduce it as much as possible before baby arrives. • Review wills, living trusts and beneficiary designations to help ensure that children are financially protected and receive the assets that are intended for their future. • Go over all of your different savings accounts: retirement savings, emergency funds, vacation funds, etc. and agree on set amounts to allocate to each. • Make estimates of future monthly
32 September 2013 | PB Parenting |
costs, such as payments for childcare, healthcare or an education savings plan. • Check your employer’s maternity leave benefits and decide how much time you will take off. Your employer may be required to grant you time off under the Family Medical Leave Act, but they’re not required to pay you during that time. Also consider, if whether both parents will return to work or if one will stay home to provide care. • Evaluate your current health insurance to determine prenatal coverage so that you pay the least amount of money out of pocket. How much will it cost? According to the most recent Department of Agriculture report a baby born in 2012 will cost a middle-income family an estimated $241,080 to raise to age 17. That being said, there’s no set amount of money that a couple needs to save. The costs of having and raising a baby will vary, depending on your unique situation and style of parenting. What’s important is to consider your liquidity needs ahead of time, prioritize and make sure you’re leaving additional room for
unanticipated events, such as a family member’s illness or job loss. When it comes to any long-term savings goal, the mantra is the earlier the better. What about a college plan? With several education planning vehicles available, it can be difficult to know which is right for you and your family, and everyone’s financial situation is
unique. One of the best ways clients can start is by speaking with their financial advisor to define a savings goal and determine what they can afford. It’s important to understand and consider the advantages and limitations of each education planning vehicle. For example, some vehicles allow greater tax benefits while others offer account owners more | PBParenting.com | September 2013

control over their portfolios. Limitations you might think about are how assets are allocated, investment flexibility, contributions caps, and account access. Keep in mind that investment products are not FDIC-insured, are not bank guaranteed, and may lose value. Also, remember that there are plenty of grants and scholarships offered by the schools, the government and private organizations. You have to do your research and apply early to as many as you can find. While paying for your child’s higher education is a priority, parents should not let it compromise their own financial stability. If necessary, money can always be borrowed to help pay for college, but the same cannot be true for financing one’s retirement. Is there anything else couples should consider before getting started? Couples should consider the day-to-day expenses that add up quickly once the
baby arrives like diapers and formula these costs can put a dent in a family’s finances if they aren’t planned for. Evaluate extra long-term costs such as choosing whether your child will attend public school or private school and extracurricular activities. Even though parenthood may seem financially overwhelming, most agree that the joy it brings is worth the cost. Just remember to keep things in perspective and plan for the unexpected. Diane J. Bain, CFM, CRPC®, CSNA is Senior Vice President, Wealth Management Advisor, Portfolio Manager – PIA Program at Merrill Lynch. Help! My Hair is Pregnant!
The pregnancy test has a plus sign! Well, consider your hair pregnant as well. Pregnancy can be an amazing time of transition and possibility. Many women notice changes in their hair such as brittleness, loss of shine, breakage, thinning and sometimes hair loss. One of the little talked about postpartum symptoms is hair loss, also known as “postpartum shedding”. Don’t panic! With the right stylist and treatments, these changes will be temporary.

It enables hair to grow through any impurities formed on the scalp. The line includes a Spray Treatment that you can purchase at Tricho Hair Salon. Tame the Butterflies TEST TAKING TIPS FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR BY SARA KENDALL
Does your child get stressed before a big test? Worrying about doing well on a test can do a number on your child’s tummy and their test performance. Try these helpful strategies to help prepare your child, alleviate stress and put their feelings in perspective. Stay On Top of It Encourage your child to maintain good study habits. Provide a quiet, well lit area with little distraction to help your child stay on task. Make sure your child keeps up with daily homework. Cramming the night before a test adds more stress that usually leads to less learning. Explain to them that it is important to learn the information at the pace the teacher has set for the class. If your child does not have a clear understanding of homework assignments before leaving class, explain to them that they should speak with their teacher. Not knowing what their homework is or how to complete it can cause a child to fall behind and receive lower test scores. Test Taking Tips Here’s a list of important strategies for your child to know and remember when taking a test. Review them with your child. Have them handy for easy reference prior to an exam. • Read directions and every possible answer – the best one could be the last one
38 September 2013 | PB Parenting |

Focus on one question at a time rather than thinking about the whole test Reread questions and answers when there is any doubt Try to arrive at the correct answer with reasoning and by eliminating wrong answers If you don’t know an answer to a question, skip it for the time being. Come back to it later if you have time, but always be sure to answer the question. A question left unanswered is always wrong, but even a guess may be correct. Don’t worry about how fast others finish their test; concentrate on your own performance. You’re not being graded on how quickly you complete the test, but by how many you get correct.
A Good Start Now that your child has done all their homework and is prepared for the test, the next most important thing they need is a good night’s sleep. Make sure they get to bed on time. Prepare a well-balanced breakfast with protein to help them stay full. Arrive to school on time. Being late will only increase stress for your child. Think Positive Give your child the chance to discuss their feelings with you. Explain that a certain degree of anxiety is normal when taking tests and that everyone has some fear
before a test. Turn their thinking around. Help your child remember how hard they have studied and tell them to show what they know. Encourage them to relax, breathe deeply and stay focused. After the Test Review the test with your child after a grade has been given. Go over any mistakes your child made. Make sure your child understands why they missed what they did. Help identify areas of weakness to make improvements for a better performance next time. Praise your child for work done well. Persistent Problems If your child is bringing home low-test scores on a regular basis, have a parentteacher conference. Insight from the teacher could prove to be very valuable. A teacher knows your child’s specific area of weakness. Extra work could be given to help reinforce a concept or provide some additional help. Tutoring You may also want to consider a tutor who can provide personalized attention and help bring your child up to speed. Research suggests that tutoring can benefit students in many ways such as improving student work habits, offering personalized instructions in small groups or one on one, spending more time on task, reducing nonproductive or risky behaviors and increasing the ability to manage one’s own learning. Integrating these strategies into your child’s weekly routine will go a long way to prepare your child for success in school. Staying prepared, getting parental support, and having the opportunity to talk openly and work through concerns will help a child get their fears under control. Anxiety will subside, their confidence will return, and test performance will improve. Sara Kendall is a freelance writer and mother of two daughters.

A+LUNCHES How much sodium is in your child’s lunchbox?
They need to be able to eat it in 20 minutes
or less. They need to be able to open and close all of the containers themselves. And it can’t go bad before they eat it. What are we talking about? The lunch your kids take to school each day. What you put in your child’s lunchbox might matter more than you realize. A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found a significant amount of sodium in the foods toddlers commonly eat. It’s feared that similar levels of sodium are also found in a number of the foods older kids eat at school every day. As concerns rise about the early onset of high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart disease, parents may want to re-examine those lunchbox choices.
40 September 2013 | PB Parenting |
Why does sodium matter? A 2012 study of children and adolescents found that higher sodium consumption was associated with increased blood pressure. This effect was even greater in overweight and obese participants compared to normal weight participants. In addition, research suggests that children’s taste for salt develops as they are exposed to it. The less sodium children consume, the less they want it. Children’s taste for salt may be reduced if they are exposed to lower sodium diets at a young age. Eating less sodium can help lower blood pressure during childhood, which can help lower the risk of high blood pressure as an adult. What’s a parent to do? Here are some tips to help tackle high sodium in your child’s lunchbox: •
•
• •
Read food labels and compare the sodium amount in different products, then choose the options with the lowest amounts of sodium. Some varieties of bread can vary from 80 to 230 mg of sodium per slice. That can make a big difference in lunchtime sandwiches. Pack fresh fruits and vegetables with lunch every day, like a small bag of baby carrots, snow peas, or grape tomatoes. For a healthy snack, make trail mix using unsalted nuts, dried fruits and whole grain cereal. When buying prepared meals, look for those with less than 600mg of sodium per serving.
By packing a lower sodium school lunch for your children, you are not only setting them up for success in the classroom, but also in life. With your help, your children can develop healthy, low sodium eating habits that

For additional information about children and sodium and more tips for parents to help lower their family’s sodium intake, visit www. cdc.gov/salt. Where’s the sodium? Understanding sodium in foods can be confusing, especially when food that otherwise seems healthy may have high levels of sodium. Most of the sodium we eat doesn’t come from the salt shaker, but is found in processed and restaurant foods. The chart on page 40 shows the Top 10 Sodium Sources for children and adolescents. How many of these have made an appearance in your child’s lunchbox?

Get Kids Outdoors No Matter the Weather
Parents often keep a running list of rainy day activities, crafts and games to keep kids indoors when the forecast is soggy. But if your kids have never dodged rain drops or enjoyed a lazy summer afternoon outside, they’re missing out on something wonderful.
parents recently surveyed by the National Wildlife Federation. But the outdoor activities kids love, such as running, jumping, climbing, playing games with friends and taking nature walks, are a great strategy for keeping children healthy and happy.
Weather was cited as the biggest barrier to getting kids outdoors by 61 percent of
“Children are safe to play outside in most kinds of weather barring the extremes,” said Lindsay Legendre, manager of the National Wildlife Federation’s ” Be Out There movement. “Regular outdoor play is so important to kids’ healthy development and a little rain shouldn’t stop them from being out there. Parents might enjoy puddle jumping again themselves.” Bring on the Rain. Rain can sometimes be blamed for causing children to catch colds or flu, particularly when their hair or feet get wet. However, rain cannot make you sick. Dress children in waterproof hats, boots and raincoats to keep kids from getting too soggy. If storm conditions develop, get out of any body of water and seek shelter in a nearby building. Prepare for mud and splashes in advance by keeping a heavy mat and dry towels by the front door.
