Love it or not Christmas is nearly here and as darling granddaughter will be spending the day with us again this year, it is sure to be a fun filled day in our house. I have made a list of the essentials when you have a child in the house batteries for the toys being at the top. I already have the pigs in blankets and Yorkshire puds (yes I cheat with frozen ones) as these are the most important part of the meal for us. I even got some 'special' stuffing to go with the meal. To be honest if that was all I gave them they would be happy as I have been given instructions to get a smaller turkey this year as they don't want to still be eating it 'curried' in the New Year! We are looking forward to next year when we will celebrate 25 years of the Female Focus magazine. Once again I would like to thank our advertisers, without who this magazine would not be possible. Christmas Fair with Live Nativity Scene If you are looking for special hand-made Christmas presents, you should perhaps make a note in your diary of the Christmas Fair that will be held in Benigembla on the weekend of 8, 9 and 10 December. And to make it a real Christmas market, there will be a live Nativity scene, with a live María and a live Joseph, who are also craft people. Then there will be a local tavern, stalls with Christmas decorations and local delicacies as well as an arts-and-crafts exhibition. All this to the sound of traditional Christmas music from all over the world and from time to time live music by Solredó. The craft people not only show (and sell) what they have made, but many of them will also be at work, so you can ask questions on techniques, tools and materials. Quite a few even speak some English (or French or German). There will be a blacksmith, a potter who makes beautiful Rakú pottery and brings his wheel to let you have a go at making your own little bowl or cup, stalls with different styles of candles, and an ample choice of presents for children and adults. But the major attraction of this fair will undoubtedly be the live Nativity scene. Not just because it is a live version of the traditional crib with María, Joseph and the Child in a very rustic looking but comfortable stable (the local pensión was full). No, this is a set up worthy of a real craft fair: Joseph and Maria are people who earn a living with their skills. Joseph is a talented carpenter and wood carver, while Maria produces wool using a spinning wheel. Both will be at work while the Child sleeps quietly in His crib. The Town Hall has asked a regional craft association Amata to select the stalls and set up the market. Amata has been organising craft fairs over the last 20 years and makes sure that everything on sale is hand-made by the participants. They use the words Artesanía de Autor® as a guarantee that the man or woman who makes the items on the stall is present. Benigembla is one of the picturesque villages in the Jalón Valley (in the north of Alicante province). Follow the coast road (N332) and turn inland at Benissa; after about 10 km. drive through Jalón, the village that is famous for its wines and the big Saturday morning Rastro (boot sale) and then follow the road past Alcalalí, past Parcent and in the direction of Castell de Castells. A very nice drive at any time of the year. As Friday 8 December is a bank holiday, the fair is open all day, from 11am onwards, with the usual break for lunch from 2pm to 5pm. On Saturday the opening times are also from 11am until 2pm and from 5pm until 9 pm or later, weather (and temperatures!) permitting, but on Sunday it opens only in the morning, until about 2 pm. Excluding all the politics – the message was that we are still in the stage of negotiation regarding EU Budget and Northern Ireland. Also, a lot of underlying work has gone on regarding British citizens rights in Euro countries. No concrete decisions have been made up to the time of writing this article but there seems good news on two fronts: 1. Pensions – Status Quo to current system. 2. Health Care – S1 card to be maintained for OAPs + 65 years old. (Britain pays 3500 Euros + indexation – per year for every S1 OAP in Spain). So what are your actions post Christmas 2018 – register for tax payment in Spain If you are: +183 days living in Spain, or have children under 18, or are running a business from Spain. It means an annual tax return in June each year (First by June 19). Register on the Padron with your local council This entitles your local council to more money to maintain Police / Roads / Hospitals / Schools etc. Failure to register for taxation in Spain will result in loss of benefits and health and open you to your taxes being reviewed, back dated for up to 4 years. Health care will be linked to Spanish registered people so 'being off the grid and under radar' could result in no automatic health cover and the need to take out private health insurance, which very often excludes existing known illnesses. As Spanish tax residents you are able to take advantage of tax efficiency and investment and potential growth, in addition to good financial planning for inheritance tax avoidance. A quartet of problems sorted, thanks to LUX-AL How to solve a problem like a 3 sided open naya...Brigitte and John McLay's naya had always presented them with a dilemma as it was open on 3 sides, very windy, and rather small. With some clever design help from LUX-AL they now have a larger enclosed naya which they are delighted with, and which they can use all year round. "Dennis at LUX-AL is rather like an old horse!", says John, who continues "He knows what he is doing, he has seen it all before, and he knows his way around to give really good advice and ideas." Urbanisation La Cala, high up in Jávea, is known for its sometimes strong winds. While this often brings welcome relief from the summer heat, it also can bring its own problems of strong gusts and chilliness in the winter. "The solution Dennis came up with is extremely clever", says John. "He suggested that we infill each of the 2 side arches of the naya with a fixed glass panel at the top, and two sliding glass panels at the bottom protected with mosquito screen netting. This means that we can open up both sides of the naya if we wish, to have the lovely air flowing through, and yet not get bitten by any horrible mossies. And at the front of the naya Dennis suggested we extend the naya with a small conservatory area, and this has made the space so much more practical, and feel so much bigger. We have sliding doors in that too. So the permutations of air-flow that we can use are immense, and this means that we can now use the naya in absolutely every season, which is marvellous!" "Furthermore, when we bought the house it came with a large awning which unfortunately didn't work properly. Rather than try and sell us a new awning which would undoubtedly have been expensive, Dennis said they would try and mend it for us, which they did. I like the fact that Dennis wasn't pushy. Many salespeople might have been; certainly we felt that Dennis genuinely wanted to help us, rather than sell to us." Brigitte is keen to tell Female Focus about the fitting of the conservatory. "They were very professional", she says "they did all the work in 3 days, they were very clean workmen, Bradley and Kevin were their names and they were really nice, smiling people, which makes all the difference." With all of this work having been such a success, John and Brigitte have also had LUX-AL fit 2 windows in their summer kitchen, and install their new remote control gates. "Everyone who comes to the house says ´We love your gates" says John. "Dennis took me to a house where they had already made some similar gates, and we were able to agree our own design based on them. All made in LUX-AL's own workshop, we are pleased with the result". Changes in the Self Employment Law

This article covers the changes in the Self Employment Law for 2017 and 2018 From the 26th October 2017 - The quota paid for self-employment will be reduced 100% for maternity leave or sick leave when the pregnancy is high risk. It will not be necessary to hire another worker to substitute the self-employed person. In the cases where they do have to hire someone else, they will be able to deduct 100% for this worker to cover the leave. - The self-employed worker on maternity or adoption leave who returns to work during the next two years will have a right to a reduction in their quota and will pay 50€ during the first 12 months. - An accident suffered going to or from work (the place where the person has stated is his place of work in his initial registration), is classed as a work related accident. - A 100% reduction in the quota on account of sick leave during 12 months when you hire, on an indefinite contract, a family member (up to a second degree bloodline, and also your partner if you can prove that you cohabit). - The option of obtaining a pension and still be registered as self-employed under the new law for Self Employment 2017 if you hire a person full time. - The quota for corporate self-employment is separated from the Minimum InterProfessional Salary and is from hereon in determined by the General State Budget. From the 1st January 2018 - The Self Employment Flat Rate of 50€ that is in force at present for 6 months will be extended to 12 months, from month 13 to 18 you will receive a 50% reduction, from month 19 to 24 you will receive a 30% reduction. In the case of women under 35 and men under 30 this reduction is increased to 30% during a further 12 months. To be eligible for this flat rate you will need only not to have been registered as self-employed for the last two years (and not five years as it has been up until now). Other reductions on top of the Basic Flat Rate from the 1st January 2018 are: - Disability or Domestic Violence or Terrorism: Reduction during the first 12 months of 80% and the following 48 months at 50%. - If you are self-employed but are hired on a full time contract in two or more places: 18 months with a 50% reduction and the 18 months after with a 25% reduction. - In this new Self Employment Law 2017, the deduction for expenses allowed /not allowed are clarified for those selfemployed. In the case of electricity, water, gas, telephones and internet a deduction of 30% is applicable for those who work from home, and this is their fiscal residence, and that do not have commercial premises. As an owner of the property, such as IBI (Rates), Owner’s Community, etc., you can deduct the part of the property that is used for the activity and the percentage of your stake in the building. You cannot deduct 50% on your income tax return for any vehicles if these are only used partially for work, the deduction will remain the same where you can only deduct 50% of the VAT. - The days of contribution will not always be the whole month as it is was up until now, you will be able to register and deregister 3 times in one year where you will only contribute the days that you are registered, and the quota will be prorated. - The changes in the base contribution change from 2 to 4. - There are changes in the surcharges in late payment of the quotas for contribution under the new law: 10% for the first month, 20% for the second month and 20% if after 2 months but within the time period given to pay this and 35% of the original quota after this payment period. - Costs for daily living expenses: a deduction of 27,27€ (and 48€ if this is abroad) for daily living expenses. These must be work related, paid digitally and an invoice obtained and are for hotels or restaurants. My name is Steve Woods and I am a solicitor specialising in claims for asbestos related diseases and I thought I would look at a number of questions that often arise and that make people worried about the possibility of making a claim. My message is, if in doubt ask! I CANNOT REMEMBER WHERE I WORKED, OR THE COMPANY I WORKED FOR NO LONGER EXISTS. It is not unusual for companies that traded in the 1960s, for example, to have long since stopped trading. With investigations I can trace insurers who provided cover for these companies and they are obliged to deal with the claims. Even if you are hazy about the exact name of a company or your period of employment with them, I can obtain your work history from HM Revenue & Customs and this provides confirmation of who you worked for all those years ago. I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH AN ASBESTOS CONDITION BUT I DID NOT WORK WITH ASBESTOS. I always like to meet my clients and it is surprising how often, when you start talking about a person's work history, what they remember. Often, it turns out that even if a person did not actually work with asbestos, they worked alongside people who did and therefore came into contact with dust. Another possibility, and a particularly sad one in my experience, is a wife who comes into contact with asbestos from her husband’s work clothes. A RELATIVE HAS DIED FROM AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION BEFORE MAKING A CLAIM. It is not widely known that claims can be made even though the person affected has died (provided the claim is made within 3 years of death). The claim is made on behalf of the person's estate. DIAGNOSING AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION. There are a number of conditions that can be caused by exposure to asbestos, including lung cancer. The main issue is whether the breathing difficulties can be attributed to asbestos. This is the point we have to prove in all respiratory disease cases, not just asbestos related but also, for example, silicosis – medical evidence is required to prove a link. Claims for breathing problems caused by exposure to asbestos can be complex but the quicker the claim is started the quicker these issues can be dealt with. Are we in control of our lives? If not, why not? All the time we have been alive we may not have been aware of the ability we have on a personal level to direct our lives. Maybe we have stayed in situations where we have been unhappy because we didn’t realise that we could make changes. As an adult we are all in the deep end! Can we all swim? I wonder! No? Well are we prepared to be taught? I know from personal experience in dealing with people that not everyone is interested in even thinking about things like this, and that is pretty much the same in life generally ...anything that requires thought or making effort or changes is only appreciated by a few. Only YOU know if you fit that bill! So, glance back over your life and ask yourself ...are you where you want to be? If not, there is no time like the present to make changes. Have you had terrible experiences in your life? Ask yourself, are you having them today? If not, why not let the bad memories go? Just LEARN from anything negative that has happened to you, there is nothing you can do about the past now. If bad things are STILL happening today you have another few choices, and it's all up to you which one you choose. You can: THINK differently, REASON differently, SEE THINGS differently, ACT differently, RESPOND differently ...to make a difference. At any given moment find something to appreciate and be prepared to be patient while you work towards getting the result you want. Consider this, is it wise to expect certain things of other people? Make your life good and be content with that. Stop depending on the behaviour of others to make you happy and take control of your own emotions and feelings. Once you start to do that everything will fall into place. It's all a learning curve though and it may take time! Try to relax when things go wrong and think about what can be done ….if it has already happened you can’t undo it! Don’t imagine bad things happening when they haven’t happened yet! Only 8% of the things we worry about ever happen apparently, so we can kill ourselves with stress imagining the other 92%! Don’t think the worst….think the best! If you think I am living in a dream world, just try to make it all a part of your life ...I did! I don’t recommend or believe in anything I haven’t experienced myself or that hasn’t worked for me. The worst things that my clients talk to me about have almost all happened to me too, and I could have gone “down the pan” if I had not embraced a completely different way of looking at things in recent years. I have also been a very close observer of the amazing changes people have been able to make in their lives by applying a different way of thinking. Of course, it’s all up to you…….. YOUR choice!! Churning… the worst enemy of your pension or investment portfolio? By Sam Kelly, Managing Partner, Chorus Financial. So, before anyone asks, no I’ve not given up financial services to campaign against the dairy industry! Churning, in financial terms, is when a financial advisor persuades a client to buy or sell funds with the sole intention of generating commissions, rather than acting in the client’s best interests. This unethical practise is illegal in the UK, so why is it so prolific here in Spain? The problem lies in the fact that in Spain, financial advisors can still receive hidden payments from investment fund providers. I have seen numerous examples here in Spain where companies have found a new fund provider who will pay them a 3-5% ‘entry charge’ when they persuade their clients to invest in that particular fund. This generates problems in two ways: Firstly, that 3-5% comes right out of the client’s pocket, and is either paid for by reducing the number of units you buy in the fund, or by elevating the fees for a period of time, normally 5 years, in order to recoup that payment. This can leave the client paying catch up from day one. The other problem, and often even more damage results from this practise, is that funds that an advisor wouldn’t usually recommend - perhaps because they don’t have a strong track-record, are from an unproven fund house, or are poorly regulated – are finding their ways into client’s portfolios, thereby lowering the quality of their investment portfolio. The funds your advisor chooses for your pension or investment portfolio, should be chosen independently, after rigorous research. Claire Tutton is an experienced and trained geriatric nurse who specialises in all aspects of stroke care, catheter care, diabetic care, leg ulcer care, Alzheimer’s and Dementia care. She now operates her very specialist home nursing services in the general area of Jávea and the surrounding villages. The following is a testimonial written by Mr Nigel Shires of Cirencester, whose partner Patricia Crutchley suffered a very severe stroke in March 2014. Claire Tutton cared for Patricia for 2 years. Over to Mr Shires to tell their story… On the 31st March 2014 my partner Patricia Crutchley suffered a very severe stroke, which left her paralysed down her left side and unable to control her bladder and bowels etc. Still, to this very date, Patricia’s condition has not changed and she cannot do anything for herself and therefore needs 24 hour care. Initially, when Pat was discharged from hospital the NHS provided free homecare. However, over time this free care was removed to be replaced with social services supported care, which had to be paid for by Pat and myself. After several months of this care it became apparent that the monthly cost was not sustainable so an alternative form of care needed to be sourced. By chance I spotted an advert placed in a local supermarket by Claire Tutton of CJT Homecare advertising a personal care service. I telephoned Claire, and arrangements were made for her to visit us. Claire arrived promptly for the meeting and it quickly became apparent that the services she could offer us were exactly what we needed and at a price that we could afford! We welcomed Claire to our home for the first time in February 2015. Claire quickly got up to speed and was able to do all that Pat needed to be done for her, which had previously needed two people to do! During the two and a half years that Claire was with us she had just one day off sick. This was due to a sickness bug that was doing the rounds. Even feeling very unwell Claire had the professionalism to call me from her sick bed to say she was poorly but would try her best to come in and look after Patricia. Claire’s personality and friendly nature quickly puts people at ease. All tasks undertaken are done with a smile. Nothing is ever too much trouble for Claire and over time, Patricia relied heavily upon her for all her care needs, day to day support and companionship. Sadly, all good things must come to an end and our loss will be someone else’s gain as Claire has now relocated in Jávea, Spain. Stay Active Muscle and bone mass are easily lost as we age, so the old saying “use it or lose it’’ is never more true than it is in your senior years. Your joints need strong support from the muscles that surround them to maintain stability and smooth function, so weakening in those muscles can lead to joint pain, as well as increasing risk of knee or hip injury. HELP Vega Baja Christmas Appeal In addition to the remarkable donations that the charity makes throughout the year to support people in need, this year the committee of HELP Vega Baja have decided to take it one step further and launched a Christmas Appeal. The charity is appealing for people to join them to make Christmas a little better for those who do not have the resources to buy fresh food or any “treats” for Christmas by helping to fill the charity shopping trolley with food to be distributed for the holiday season. Not happy to stop there, they are also looking to collect gifts for the elderly who may be alone throughout the festivities. President of the charity, Michele Masson said “by working closely with social services we are aware that there are many families in the area who struggle, particularly this time of the year and with the support of the community we would like to do something to show that they are not forgotten. If everyone, for example, bought just one item for the trolley it could make such a huge difference and a small gift included on your list for an elderly person would help them see that people are thinking of them. In the brief time since we have launched this appeal we have already received tremendous support from local businesses who have agreed to act as drop off points for the appeal. Hello Mr. H, Unfortunately to most, losing hair is part of any man’s life and this is an ongoing process that starts with puberty and is very much related to hormonal and genetic conditions. Male hormones such as testosterone induce the growth of hair follicles all over the body but it will reduce it, sometimes drastically, over the head. Hair can be transplanted from areas such as the back of the head were follicles are more resistant, to the frontal and parietal areas where it is missing. The techniques vary but mostly consist of taking the follicles one by one or in small groups. It is normally done in one session under local anaesthesia and the patient can go back home the same day. There will be certainly some amount of swelling in the initial 3-4 days after which normal life can be resumed wearing a cap. Pain killers and/or antibiotics may be needed. The now transplanted hair implants may eventually lose the contained hair in the root but new hairs will develop and begin to show as early as ten days later. It will take about 2-3 months until hair has grown back again. It used to be a tiring operation for the surgeon as the follicles have to be taken and then implanted one by one but in recent years a machine has been made to ease the job. It has to be handled by the surgeon who carefully selects the best follicles and then “punches” and vacuums them one by one. The device stores them and then they are re-implanted in the established order. In recent years hair implant procedures have become a speciality of their own in cosmetic surgery, and therefore some clinics, who only dedicate to it, have this sort of equipment. There are countries like Turkey where there has been reported an increase of “Health tourism” because of this and they make extraordinary offers that include the whole operation, the stay in a local hotel and the flight for around 2000€. Figures talk of at least 200.000 Spaniards having been treated so far in that country and a lot more from other European countries and the results seem to be as good as the ones done locally. The results are lasting enough to say that are permanent but hair will still fall in some of the non treated areas and may require some additional “top up” or if the patient wants it more abundant, a second session can be performed one year later. In any case, my feeling is that although it seems unfortunate to lose hair at the age of 35, nowadays I don’t think that is a reason to be embarrassed. Hair is no longer the sign of youth as it was in the 60s, the looks of “modern balds” like Jason Statham or Bruce Willis who shave their heads, can be seen as highly attractive.

One Year On ....and ....the results speak for themselves This time last year we were introducing CLUB F!T’s 2017 GetFit New Year´s Challenge. Well, what a success it was, with all 8 challengers not only making it to the end of the Challenge, but also feeling so happy with the training they receive at CLUB F!T that they have all remained members at the CLUB F!T. This result speaks volumes that at CLUB F!T they do something special. Two of the Challengers were Ian Bullough and Maja Griesser who are pictured here, both of whom readily volunteer to tell Female Focus about the past year. Ian Bullough: “Readers may recall that back in 2016 whilst skippering a yacht near Formentera I was suddenly and severely taken ill with a broken oesophagus, which was a very serious condition. After 2 emergency helicopter flights and 9 weeks in intensive care, I was not an ‘ordinary’ Fitness Challenger for the team here at CLUB F!T to work with, because many of my muscles had wasted away and I was desperately needing to regain some muscle power and improve my overall strength and health. Well I am just ever so grateful for what CLUB F!T has done for me. My breathing has improved, I have put some weight back on, my muscle strength has been rebuilt, and also CLUB F!T has brought fun and hope back into my weekly regime. My favourite classes are the ‘Drumbeats’, ‘Cardio Class’, ‘Boxing Classes’ and the ‘Pilates Class’. In particular Pilates has helped me to strengthen my breathing, which was so necessary after my illness. On the social side, the staff and the other members at CLUB F!T have really helped me to get my mojo back. I have met so many nice people here. Roast pumpkin, sweet potato and carrot soup Simple classic, winter warmer for when the weather turns cold. This soup is great on Christmas day as a starter or a light lunch during the festive season. Roasting the veggies adds to the natural sweetness of the soup, the sugars in the vegetables caramelise beautifully. Ingredients 2kg pumpkin, sweet potato and carrot 4 garlic cloves, unpeeled 1 onion, chopped 3 tbsp oil 1 tsp turmeric 1 tsp salt ½ tsp black pepper 1 litre vegetable stock Harrisa, optional Greek yogurt, optional Chopped coriander Time: 20 minutes prep, 45 minutes to cook. Makes/Serves 6 Recipe - Preheat oven to 200°C Gas Mark 6. - Wash, peel and chop the vegetables into 2cm cubes. - Place the vegetables along with the garlic on a baking/ roasting tray, season with salt and pepper, drizzle with 2 tablespoons of oil. Toss to coat. - Heat the remaining oil in a large saucepan over medium heat, cook the onion until soft. Add the turmeric and stock. - Once the vegetables have roasted; remove the garlic from the skin, add the garlic and roasted vegetables to the onion mix. - Simmer the soup mixture and cook covered for 15 minutes. - Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly, blend until smooth. - Serve with chopped coriander a dollop of yoghurt or for added heat a swirl of harissa. TIPS: Serve with sourdough bread with butter. Pumpkin seeds can be roasted and sprinkled on the soup before serving.

VIVA ESPAÑA! Journalist and broadcaster Jack Troughton plays ‘Johnny Foreigner’ and casts an eye over Spain and focuses on stories that serve as a gentle reminder he remains an Englishman abroad.
T
he cat and mouse game of politics played out in the short-lived Republic of Catalonia has given way to another family favourite board game, snakes and ladders; and the independence leaders appear to be on the slippery slope of a giant anaconda. The Spanish government allowed the Catalan parliament in Barcelona a long lead; Carles Puigdemont and his team rolled the dice, won a highly controversial referendum in October – ruled illegal by Madrid ahead of the vote - and moved forward to land on a snake’s head and whoosh... down, down, deeper and down. Mr Puigdemont and four colleagues are now in exile in Belgium and facing extradition back to Spain; other leaders have been arrested in Catalonia and now face charges of rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds. It may not be gunpowder, treason and plot but given the time of year, the 17th Century attempt to unseat James I and his parliament did come to mind. No one would dare suggest the hundreds of thousands taking to the streets to demonstrate are driven by anything but heartfelt emotion. However, it is also worth remembering there are two sides to this complex story; every march in support of a breakaway flying the flag of an independent Catalonia (incorporating the star of revolutionary Cuba no less), is followed by a counter show of strength, people waving the Spanish flag or the historic banner of the region. Catalonia, including the beautiful Costa Brava and a number of historic cities, is a huge magnet for visitors. It is a cultural land of plenty, the home of artist Salvador Dali and architect Antoni Gaudi. The capital, Barcelona, is simply a joy to discover and home to one of the world’s most famous football clubs; and then things got messy.
The region has its own language and traditions – Spain, like England was once a country of separate kingdoms – but during the last century was brutally repressed under the fascist regime of General Franco. Come the return of democracy, it became one of the autonomous regions. However, there an independence movement has slowly crept up to the fore. The call to go it alone has been built on the sense of pride of being a Catalan and living in an area roughly equivalent to a country the size of Belgium. Independence groups believe the region – one of the country’s most affluent - gives too much and receives too little back from Madrid. Catalonia has a population of about 7.5 million, 16% of the Spanish population live there. Economically, around 25% of Spain’s exports come from the region; Catalonia produces 19% of Spain’s gross domestic product; and 20% of total investment into Spain goes there. In the run up to the 1st October ballot, polls revealed an apparent equal split between the population in favour of going it alone and those wanting to remain a part of Spain. There were calls for an ‘official’ referendum to serve as a ‘once and for all’ decider; the name Scotland and its own ‘Indyref’ were frequently quoted (Even though as a one in a lifetime vote, Scottish nationalists are now calling for Indyref2). Madrid was having none of it. The moves towards the ballot were ruled illegal by the Constitutional Court. The referendum was banned but the went ahead in any case – there was a turnout of about 2.2 million, 43% of the electorate and 92% of the votes cast were in favour of independence – loyalists stayed away and sat on their hands. The declaration of independence was announced, put on ice, and declared again as separatists underlined their mandate from the people. Mr Puigdemont went into exile and Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy dissolved the Catalan parliament putting Madrid in charge of the region. New regional elections are scheduled for 21st December and if not exactly a de facto legal referendum, it is hoped will end what the PM has described as “havoc”. And to make matters even more complex, it now appears that Spain was hit by ‘fake news’; millions of false social media messages designed to spread disharmony and destabilise. These are alleged to come from Russia in a propaganda war and be part of a determined cyber attack on the West... but that’s another story.

Christmas Starts Here The annual Christmas concert, “Christmas Starts Here”, will be held in La Zenia church on Sunday 10 December at 7.30pm. It will feature the Costa’s leading chorus, In Harmony - conducted by Nigel Hopkins. This year’s concert will be extra special as included in the programme will be the Christmas music from Handel’s Messiah. This all-time favourite work has thrilled audiences for more than two and a half centuries and will be a special feature of this concert. Included in this Christmas celebration will be many Christmas songs and carols heard in the best cathedrals around the world, and will include many favourite carols especially for audience participation. This year Nigel Hopkins’ choirs reached a charity fundraising total of 50,000€, and a substantial donation from this concert will benefit La Zenia church. Tickets are 10€ each, and are available only from La Ponderosa Gift Shop at La Zenia C.C. (next to Consum). Places are limited so you are advised to book early to avoid disappointment.

MOFTAG Christmas Fayre The Moftag ladies in Calpe will be holding their Christmas Fayre on Saturday 9 December at the PUB DELFIN, Damara, Calpe at 10.30am. This ever popular event is one of Moftag’s main fund raisers of the year. There will be various stalls selling homemade produce, games for adults and children and a large raffle including beautiful hampers and super gift vouchers. Charity events in aid of Caritas
On Friday 17 November Carol’s Kitchen held a Charity Auction to raise funds for their local Caritas Group who help and support local people within the Jávea port area. With the Help of Mick Dennison from Radio Galaxy, Brian (of Carol’s Kitchen) started the auction and the money started rolling in. With some good fun items from trinkets, to prints and vases to toys were sold to the excited bidders. With additional cash raised from food and raffle sales the total amount raised for the night was just under 900€ which was rounded up to the final total of 900€. A team from Caritas came to Carol’s Kitchen on Monday 27 November for a presentation and joined locals for a drink, whilst awarding the bar with a Caritas Plaque. Brian and Carol would like to thank every one who helped or turned up to support the worthwhile cause, on the night.

Montgó Chorale Christmas Concert Once again Montgó Chorale, under its new Musical Director, Jan Dewland, is presenting a concert of Christmas music on Sunday 10 December. The concert will be held at the beautiful Loreto church in Jávea Port. This is often referred to as the Fishermen’s Church, because of its unusual internal roof design. As is the tradition, there will be a retiring collection in aid of Caritas, the church’s charity that supports families in Jávea that are struggling financially. As usual, the choir will be singing many well-loved carols, some requiring enthusiastic participation from the audience, as well as some beautiful but less familiar items. The concert will begin at 5pm. You do not need a ticket. Simply turn up at the door, but be sure to arrive in plenty of time as the church normally fills to capacity. So, why not begin your festive season in style? Come along and join them for one of the most enjoyable and traditional of Christmas activities, while at the same time supporting a very important and worthwhile local charity. Marina Alta Costa Blanca Floral Club Our Christmas Demonstration is on Thursday 7 December at the Salon de Actos, La Senieta, Moraira, when we look forward to welcoming Ann Marie Kendrick on her first visit to our club. Ann Marie did her NAFAS training in Norwich, and besides being a “fun lady” she is very generous with her time and knowledge. A National Demonstrator, Speaker and Teacher, she enjoys taking part in floral competitions and flower festivals, including Chelsea Flower Show and she has also helped decorate Westminster Abbey. Ann Marie will be bringing us a “A Touch of Sparkle”, and before this the Club will be offering all members and guests a glass of Christmas Cheer and a mince pie to help set the scene. We will be drawing the lucky winners of our Christmas Hamper Raffle, which is in aid of Charity, and tickets will be available on the day for those who haven’t managed to buy them beforehand. We will also have tickets for our Open Demonstration with Sean Murray on Tuesday 23 January, when Sean will be giving a Presentation on “The Great Chelsea Garden Challenge”. The end of another year is upon us. Time to sit back and enjoy some free time. Hopefully we won’t get any bad storms in the time since I have written this article, but providing you have already cut back your trees you will be in a good position to relax. Gardens can be a lot of work, but as said last month, you must remember to enjoy your garden space, don’t just make going into the garden all about work. This is where having fun social and secret spaces within your garden give you more of an incentive to sit and enjoy. If you are thinking about a new garden or a change to your existing garden the one thing I would suggest to do is to try and make the garden and the house more of one space which works together. If you are designing a new house or house reform this idea is especially good. Not only does it appear to increase the size of your house, it always creates a serenity and a link to the garden and landscape beyond. Part of what I do as a garden designer is to allow customers to explore possibilities they have maybe not explored. So, if you are looking at doing a project with your property we are always available to go through your design options and work with your architect and builder to create a complete package - not just a house and a garden but a property project that works seamlessly together.

Plants of the month: Just to start I will be a little cliché, Poinsettia, Euphorbia Pulcherima. Coming in a huge variation of colours now, these brilliant festive plants are always wonderful to look at. They can be planted in your garden here although they can be a bit of a challenge to grow and remember they only look good at this time of year. Much like the Bougainvillea remember the parts that look like petals are bracts and the flower is the very small bit in the middle.
Just to be a little less cliché a good plant of the month is. Osteopsermum or Dimorphotheca as it is called in Spain. Again, it is an easy, cheap and colourful plant that doesn’t need a lot of work, prune it back around September / October as this plant grows later in the season to flower now through December and January. They are normally in the annuals section at the garden centre, but you will get three to four years growth from them and they often self-seed, so they can be nice thrown across banks etc and with a quick beating back at the right time of year they will be a mass of colour. Costa Blanca Gardeners’ Circle The next meeting of the Gardeners’ Circle will be held on Wednesday 13 December at 2.30pm. The venue is La Senieta in Moraira next to the town car park where there is ample parking. Last month we all enjoyed a presentation on New Zealand by Sue and Nigel Bentley. On our next meeting we welcome Rocio Rodriguez to advise us on pruning our garden shrubs and trees. This is particularly relevant at this time of year and gardener Rocio is very knowledgeable. There will be our usual raffle and plant sales of members’ excess plants from their own gardens. The competition is ‘An Arrangement of Berries’. All members and friends welcome. All you need to know … Night and Day Blinds Night and Day blinds are a decorative and innovative blind relatively new to the market, but proving to be a very popular choice. Stylish Fabrics These blinds come in a great range of fabrics, from stylish and contemporary neutrals to modern printed designs, from coloured options in matt or shot through with metallic thread to more sophisticated options with tiny pleated finishes, whatever the style of your property there is a fabric to suit. The standard size of the stripes is approximately 7-8cm which is perfect for a normal sized window. However on a large expanse this can look fussy and for this situation larger striped designs are the perfect solution with stripes up to 20 in depth giving the most amazing effect when lowered. Aesthetically Pleasing As an added extra to the blinds, they can be made pre-housed in a clever cover that hides the mechanism, or for a more decorative feature they can be combined with the clean lines of a coordinating upholstered or aluminium finish pelmet. Adding a metallic chain and decorative counterweight can also add some class, or the blind can be used as the practical part of a more decorative combination with sheers, curtains or dress curtains, even those already installed. Happy Animales Spanien update and Christmas Party Happy Animales Spanien is a non profit charity, founder is Mona Nowak. The charity supports the animals at Finca San Miguel de Salinas, where there are at present 8 horses, 4 ponies, 8 goats, 4 pigs, 3 dogs, 21 cats, chickens, Donald and Daisy Duck and 13 geese, and they are hungry every day! On the last Saturday of each month there is an open day where you can visit the Finca and see the animals, there will be food, drinks and cake. If you would like to come and join a nice afternoon with the animals, you can also bring carrots, apples, lettuce, dog and cat food, dog and cat biscuits or a little donation, every Euro counts! Alftom have donated a Christmas hamper and tickets are on sale with the draw taking place at the Finca on Saturday 9 December. Recently an Englishman called for help as he’s very ill and wanted a good place for his 2 goats. As you can see from the picture, they are happy with the other goats now at the finca. Christmas time is (almost) here again! Crescendo International Choir have been busy since September rehearsing for their Christmas concerts. As always at Christmas, Crescendo will be singing for the residents and staff of Casa Verde Retirement Home in Almoradi. This year it will be on the morning of Friday 8 December. Then Crescendo will sing a selection of carols and Christmas music at Benijofar church on Sunday 10 December at 7.30pm. Please join us there to help raise funds for the local town hall social services who distribute food parcels with a difference to local needy families. The choir members and congregation all bring chocolate and sweet treats for the basket of ‘goodies’ which will be handed out to underprivileged families in the area, giving a little extra festive cheer. Can YOU bring a sweet treat when you come to join the carol singing? There will also be a bucket collection at the door to help the appeal. We look forward to seeing and hearing you in full voice at this festive season. Niamh's Santiago Challenge You might remember a recent article we published about Niamh O’Sheehan, a local singer, mother of three and eager philanthropist. Niamh’s most recent endeavour was to raise money for an electric wheelchair for a local family. A physically challenging undertaking to help someone who is physically challenged. Niamh commenced the mammoth task of walking the Camino Santiago on the 10th of October. She completed the 800+ kilometre trek 36 days later battling through pain and tears. She suffered from serious blister infections that led to hospital visits and a significant foot injury called plantar fasciitis. Niamh’s camino became a test of endurance that she did not anticipate but her stamina and determination to complete the task carried her through. On Day 23 of Niamh’s Facebook blog she writes “I have 1km to cover to get to the next town and I'm without gasoline. My backbone is broken. I'm standing on a junction that keeps offering me temptingly slow passing cars. Boots off to relieve the pressure and I hobble on. I'm pretty sure I've done some serious damage to my right underfoot. I'll deal with that later. I arrive at the stunning bridge Puente de Orbiga. It takes me 15 minutes to negotiate the cobbles. I'm completely disenchanted. It's a national fiesta and my kids are off school and I just want to go home. I've had enough. And I swear on my life. As I clumsily manoeuvre that lumpy bridge I receive a message from Candy of HELP Denia to say she has found a candidate for the electric wheelchair we are all working so hard together to purchase. He is named Juan Carlos and he lost 70% of his mobility in a car crash. His wife works but they are a low income family and don't qualify for an electric wheelchair. They have a 6 year old daughter. He is stuck in a bed. Talk about an injection of motivation right there! I painstakingly reach the other side of the bridge.” Niamh has raised €1400 but that’s not quite enough. She is reaching out one more time to all the Female Focus readers and business advertisers to dig deep in the run up to Christmas so we can give Juan Carlos and his family the gift of a lifetime. U3A Oliva is 10 years old To celebrate the first decade of the Oliva Branch of the U3A, a celebratory party was held at the Oliva Restaurant, Viva España on 10th November 2017. An excellent turnout of approximately 150 members, ensured this was a memorable event. After a warm welcome and a potted history of the organisation from the President, Mick Goy (pictured), members were entertained by their Choir who sang a couple of medley numbers from the shows. After the dinner there was further entertainment from Bay Radio’s John Curtis whose music kept the audience dancing for the next few hours. The Oliva branch of the U3A is a vibrant organisation providing over 30 diverse special interest groups from Walking to Line Dancing to Jazz Appreciation. A speaker will discuss various topics and this is followed by a question and answer sessions where all will be invited to discuss the subject of the talk and expand on the themes.
