As we go to print Spain has stripped Catalonia of its autonomy and taken charge of its government. Maybe I am being too hopeful to think that in this day and age this can be dealt with in a peaceful, legal and diplomatic way. Surely as our world becomes more accessible to all we should all be looking for ways to come together rather than breaking apart. Lesley

Things To Consider When Choosing a Financial Adviser by Steve Iball – deVere Spain
No doubt you’ve heard about the recent troubles and demise of a local expat financial services company. Amongst many aspects, it brings into question the work of everyone in the industry. But instead of saying “come to us, we’re the best”, I thought I would share 4 key aspects we at deVere feel are important when starting down this road.
1 – Regulated vs Registered There’s a difference between registered and regulated. As a regulated company in Spain deVere regularly receive audits and inspections which must be passed. The regulating body in Spain is the DGS. deVere is covered in a dispute complaint by an Ombudsman as the advice was given in the country where the IFA was regulated. 2 - Service Continuation If something should happen to me as part of a larger firm, deVere uses colleagues and a new adviser would be appointed within 24 hours to pick up and carry on as if nothing happened. It’s your money at stake and you should expect no interruption to your service. However, I intend working flat out for the next 6 years +. 3 - Double checking Any advice you receive from me has been looked over by someone up the chain who is equally accountable. It prevents mistakes, and gives focus by the checker on Compliance and “Best Advice”. Our compliance manager also checks that

the client is not going to be disadvantaged and the advice fits with their attitude to risk. We review all clients every 3 months and random checks are made to ensure that happens. 4 - Experience My experience extends beyond 38 years and still my recommendations are checked by the Head Office legal team and my Line Manager. All IFAs at deVere undergo continuous personal development to stay up to date. Our support to expats living in Costa Blanca is at no cost, so call me now to double check your financial situation. My name is Steve Woods and I am a solicitor specialising in claims for asbestos related diseases and I thought I would look at a number of questions that often arise and that make people worried about the possibility of making a claim. My message is, if in doubt ask! I NEVER MADE A CLAIM BEFORE. I understand that making a claim can seem daunting and this is why I always visit my clients and meet them face to face. I can explain the process and I find this reassures them. I come to Spain regularly and so personal visits are not a problem. I CANNOT REMEMBER WHERE I WORKED, OR THE COMPANY I WORKED FOR NO LONGER EXISTS. It is not unusual for companies that traded in the 1960s, for example, to have long since stopped trading. With investigations I can trace insurers who provided cover for these companies and they are obliged to deal with the claims. Even if you are hazy about the exact name of a company or your period of employment with them, I can obtain your work history from HM Revenue & Customs and this provides confirmation of who you worked for all those years ago. I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH AN ASBESTOS CONDITION BUT I DID NOT WORK WITH ASBESTOS. It is surprising how often, when you start talking about a persons work history, what they remember. Often, it turns out that even if a person did not actually work with asbestos, they worked alongside people who did and therefore came into contact with dust. Another possibility, and a particularly sad one in my experience, is a wife who comes into contact with asbestos from her husband’s work clothes. MY BREATHING PROBLEMS ARE NOT TOO BAD. A lot of people I meet are dismissive of their breathing problems and underestimate how they affect their daily lives. Some people I have seen do not realise there is a time limit for bringing claims and so it is important that investigations are started as soon as possible. Claims for breathing problems caused by exposure to asbestos can be complex but the quicker the claim is started the quicker these issues can be dealt with. So, if you are concerned about your particular situation or have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch. I am happy to talk to you free of charge.

Titled Mortgages (Secondary market mortgages) cannot be seized In accordance with Law 19/1992, on the Regimen of Companies and Property Investment Funds and Titled Mortgages, the title of the loan assumes that the bank loses its status as creditor, even if it maintains, by law, its status as owner of the debt in the Registry and, unless otherwise agreed, its administration. If you have been unable to pay your mortgage and the bank has initiated a court procedure to foreclose on the mortgage, or even if the property is due to be auctioned or it is at the eviction stage, you can oppose this if your mortgage is titled, as the bank is not the rightful owner of your mortgage. There is already case history regarding this matter. What is a titled mortgage? This is a procedure whereby the bank that gave the mortgage, to be able to generate liquid funds, uses a procedure called titled mortgages, that is to say that they group the mortgages in a packet and they are sold in the form of bonds, public debt, etc., sometimes they sell the whole mortgage, other times in parts, to diversify the risk, to different investors. Who takes part in this situation? 1. The bank: Who lends the money. 2. The managing company: That manages and administrates the title fund (who buys the package of loans that they then sell to investors on the financial market). 3. The bondholder: who buys the them. 4. The debtor, that without “us has no business. So, the bank exchanges its rights on those loans (the interest that we pay them in our mortgage repayments) for immediate liquidity, to reinvest this and continue with the same procedure. It’s a magical formula to make more and more liquidity, and reinvest it. If you have a titled mortgage (and it is calculated that 80% of mortgages of the majority of Spanish banking institutions are titled), the takeover in the case that bank seizes the property would be null and void, and the adjudication of the property to the Bank would be unlawful enrichment. For the same reasons, the Land Registry should deny the inscription in the name of the bank, which, on the other hand, cannot register this in the name of the managing company as this is a non-legal entity. Possibly your property cannot be seized even if you do not pay your mortgage. It is very possible that the bank is not the legitimate owner of your debt, and neither is the managing company, as it does not sustain the legality to enforce it. How do I know if my mortgage is titled? This is not an easy task, you must request this information from your bank, the CNMV (Comision Nacional de Mercado de Valores), or the Bank of Spain, you could even do this via the tribunals, or a law firm. A court judgement considers that if an organisation cedes the whole of a mortgage to a managing company the bank loses their right as creditor, and therefore the right to claim it. If you believe that this may be your case, or you require assistance with other legal or tax matters, then do not hesitate to call us on 96 626 0500 or email me, Ana Gay, on anagay@linkpointlegal.com.

We Need To Ensure This Cannot Happen Again By Sam Kelly, Managing Partner, Chorus Financial.
A note from the author: Below is an article we ran in the weekly newspapers and through our Facebook page. Within just hours we were receiving messages of thanks for addressing this major issue here in Spain. Over the course of the next week we were able to help prevent 7 individuals from signing up to inappropriate plans, both pension transfers and Spanish bonds, where extortionate hidden fees were involved. Chorus are a small, independent company, and such positive responses from the general public really keeps us going, so Thank You! I’ve been battling with myself over the last few days as to whether to write this article, and indeed what to say. As many of you will have heard by now, one of the largest financial advisory companies in our region lost their license recently. This has left countless clients unsure as to their financial future. It’s an incredibly sad and disturbing situation. Those of you who have been reading my articles or attending my seminars over the last few years will know that I’ve been warning against certain practises used here in Spain, by the majority of financial advisors, that would be illegal in the UK. It was these such practises that lead to this company causing large losses for many of their clients, and ultimately losing their license. All I can do is to continue with the same message, because what happened was entirely preventable. In the UK, it is illegal for financial advisors to offer funds or structured products that pay an upfront or ongoing hidden fee to the advisor. These rules prevent financial advisors from being biased towards a particular investment, ensuring that only the very best, high quality funds are recommended. This year alone, I’ve had over 50 people ask me to look at plans set up by other financial advisors in the area. These are mainly investment portfolios held in QROPS and Spanish bonds. Each and every one of the portfolios I looked, without exception, contained funds that paid the advisor hidden fees to recommend them. Despite the number of times I see this, it still upsets and disturbs me. These are often small funds, with little track record, that cost 4 to 5 times more than other funds in their category, and under-perform the benchmark. The financial advisor has put their needs, i.e. being paid a hidden fee, before the needs of the client. This is absolutely unacceptable practise, and the sooner it becomes illegal in Spain, the better. Sadly, what happens when you have an industry acting like this, is that more and more people are put into low quality investments, and sooner or later, we have a situation like we had this week. For me I’d expect to see an investment portfolio full of UK based, FCA regulated funds, which can’t use these illegal practises. Household names like Fidelity, Investec, Rathbones, The Prudential, Fundsmith, Vanguard etc. Fund houses with decades of track record; funds used by the top financial advisors around the World. I firmly believe that educating the public is the only way to prevent what happened from happening again. Thousands of you will be holding such investments already, without even knowing, or about to sign paperwork that will unwittingly tie you into such a plan. You can invest safely and securely in Spain, and you should expect access to the same quality of financial advice as you would receive in the UK. If you, a friend or family member, are considering a new investment or pension transfer, it is essential to seek a second opinion BEFORE paperwork is signed. Anyone with an existing plan should have this reviewed immediately. I will gladly look at any new proposal or existing plan without charge or obligation, and give you honest feedback. Please either email me on s.kelly@chorusfinancial.es or call me today on 664 398 702. Now is the time to act to ensure you do not become the next victim of rogue financial advice here in Spain. Chorus Financial is a trading style of Tourbillon Limited, authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Commission (Gibraltar), Licence Number FSC1118B and registered with the UK FCA as an EEA Authorised firm, reference 539348.

Knee pain while playing golf There are many causes of knee Article supplied by problems related to the game of golf. Kevin Thornton, Many of these problems are related to the Telephone 96 676 5686 amount of rotation throughout the body
that is required during the backswing and follow-through. For a right-handed golfer, a significant amount of torque and valgus stress (stress to the inside of the knee) is generated at the left knee. The knees must stay flexed during the backswing to absorb some of the rotational stress of the swing. For the many golfers who have tight back muscles and joints, one of the ways to attempt to generate more turn in the backswing is to place more stress on the knee. This often leads to injuries to the medial (inside) meniscus. There are also many golfers with tight hip muscles, which changes the joint alignment at the knee. This again places more stress on the knee, making it more susceptible to injury. The knee is not designed well for the rotation and side-to-side movement required by the golf swing, some precautions should be taken to ensure that extra stress is not placed on the knees. One of the best measures to take is to ensure that the muscles in your hips, low and mid back are flexible. By allowing full rotation to occur through the hips and back, stress is evenly distributed about the knee, and will not cause any extra injury. It is also important to make sure that the three main muscles surrounding the knee joint are strong. By making certain that these three main muscles are strong and the hips and back are flexible, the knee joint is afforded maximal protection against injury. Your Physical Therapist can help you with flexibility and strengthening exercises to target these areas to decrease stress on your knees. I also advise my patients not to wear spiked shoes upon their first return. The shoes should have good arch support to prevent knee rotation. There are many speciality golf shoe stores that can fit you with arch support for your golf shoes. Orthotics can potentially help the knee, but also decrease strain on the hips and back. Many patients often ask me about knee bracing, either preventative or after a knee injury. My advice is usually the same: knee braces are good for providing temporary support after a mild injury, but should not be worn long-term. Any brace that is worn long-term may cause the body to rely on that extra support, and can actually weaken or suppress the structural support system. As always, any injury that prevents you from playing or walking normally, or lasts longer than a few days needs to be examined by your Doctor or Physical Therapist. Playing through a knee injury can actually worsen the injury or lengthen the recovery time needed to get back on the course. Remember, strong knees and flexible back muscles help ensure smooth movement through the entire backswing and follow-through, helping to improve your game This article is for information purposes ONLY and should not be used as a diagnostic tool. “The difference between genius and stupidity ....genius has its limitations!” How true is that if you think about it! A good friend shared that thought with me recently and I guess that answers a lot of the problems we are dealing with in everyday life! Surely after all the years humans have been around, we should be more intelligent now and things should be improving on a world wide scale. It is so evident that we cannot sort things out ourselves, as it doesn’t happen! A small number of the world’s population have nothing to complain about because we have so much more than the majority of people in other parts of the world ....and yet we moan and groan and take so much for granted! The quotation above sums it up, I guess! As we are all different, how can we expect to find harmony if we are accepting so many differences about the rules of how we should live, and which government we should obey? Chaos is what many deserve and so many of the rules and regulations are sheer stupidity, not making much sense. We are so imperfect that we cannot avoid wanting to handle things in a way that will not bring the best results, so I guess living like that means we have had a price to pay ....Stupidity! (or other feet problems) A lot of people I have dealt with over the years have had Before massive problems with depression, and they blame it on other people. When discussed, it is clear that where we are today is all down to choices WE have made, and as we are in control, by handling things differently and thinking differently, we can bring happiness back into our lives .....it’s true, and taking After control works! Before After So many people do not find it easy to accept responsibility for the things that have gone wrong in our lives. I am not talking about when we were children, but once we become adults we can have the quality of life we want, even if it is just down to having the right attitude about things. This non-invasive approach is fast, Stay strong! Violet King. effective and costs less than you might think. Call us and we’ll get you back on your feet in no time.

“Apart from speeding ill patients to hospital, what else do we get up to at AAEdJ?” Over the years Female Focus readers will have read about our emergency trips getting persons taken ill to hospital in the quickest time possible. But fortunately life isn’t always like an episode of Casualty. Often there are other duties for us to do, and events happening, where we supply our ambulance services in case of need. Here’s a quick look at what else we get up to at the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea: It’s in the blood: Did you know that stored blood only lasts about a month before it needs to be discarded? We at the AAEdJ are regularly involved in bringing supplies of new blood from main hospitals such as Alicante Hospital to our more local hospitals like the San Carlos Clinic in Denia. By law, blood can only be transported in an ambulance where it is kept cool, and hygienically transferred under sterile conditions. We’re not horsing around: Well, in fact we are. A little bit. Right now we are providing ambulance cover at the twice yearly Mediterranean Equestrian Tour at Oliva. In case a rider is taken ill, or takes a fall and needs medical attention, one or more of our ambulances are always on site at the meet, which lasts until 12th November. If any reader wants more information about the equestrian tour then go to: http://www.metoliva.com/en/. As drunk as a skunk: is not how we expect to see any Female Focus readers, but at the Oktoberfest in Calpe which runs until 5th November, who knows? As usual this ‘Fiesta de la Cerveza’ is being held next to the main Tennis Courts in Calpe, and we at AAEdJ are providing ambulance cover at the event. This is the 30th Anniversary of the beer festival, and we are looking forward to it going smoothly and without a hitch. More details can be found at: http://www.calpe.es/ver/2182/oktoberfest-calpe.html/. Lots of bull: At many town fiestas up and down the coast this year we at AAEdJ have been on hand at discos, bull runs, firework displays, processions and festivals providing ambulance cover at small and large events. By law ambulances must be in place at public events, and as one of the most modern and professional ambulance services we are often hired to help keep the public safe. So whilst our fleet of state-of-the art ambulances (think mobile intensive care units) are always on hand up and down the vast majority of Costa Blanca North, and inland too, to look after you (our clients who have a contract with us in times of emergency), we are also selected to provide our services to many of the events happening in our area. Membership of the AAEdJ is just €50 for a whole year for the whole family. To join telephone and speak with Laure Bolufer the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea (AAEdJ) Registration Manager on 96 579 6099 (Laure works from 10am to 1pm every weekday). The AAEdJ ambulance service covers almost all of Costa Blanca North and will come straight to you wherever you are. ASOCIACION AMIGOS EUROPEOS DE JAVEA. Avenida Juan Carlos 1, No 69, 03730 Javea. Improve Your Life with Personal Training Are you over the age of 50 and looking to improve your fitness? You may be nervous about working with a personal trainer, as the stereotype is that they only work with young people, fit people or professional athletes. However, that’s simply not true! Lorraine Young is an experienced Personal Trainer and Pilates Instructor and will work with you to come up with the right fitness plan for your body and your ability level, as it is personal training! Lorraine is committed to customising a core-strengthening, flexibility-building and stamina-enhancing personal routine that is suitable and practical for each individual. Whether you’re just looking for an exceptional workout, working towards a certain goal or on a mission to rehab from an injury, Lorraine will dedicate and tailor your session to you, potentially including: - Strength training to hone your body, improve your grip, and up your endurance. - Training to improve your balance and coordination - Stretches to keep your bones and joints limber and cope with arthritis - Exercises to help speed recovery after serious injury. The result is a proactive and preventive mind/body conditioning program. Personal Training for all ages As you age, your muscles begin to shrink and lose mass and your strength decreases. Additionally, the speed at which your body converts food to energy slows, your flexibility is reduced and your bones become more fragile. Regular exercise and activity provided by a personal training program along with a healthy diet can help offset these effects of aging. Lorraine Young specialises in rehabilitation after injury or getting people fit to start exercise. She has 30 years’ experience in the fitness industry both in the UK and in Spain and is a Level 3 Pilates Instructor who also holds a Training & Education Diploma and Assessment Diploma. 630€ raised in aid of Huntington’s Disease Association A magnificent 630€ has been raised by “Restaurant Catorce” in Benijofar for sufferers with Huntington’s Disease. Find out what the stars have in store for you Aries: Listening to someone close to you is vital this month. You cannot afford to hurt their feelings by not being attentive of their needs for much longer. They have dropped enough hints but now they are really starting to say it how it is. LISTEN.
Leo: If you are thinking of making a big change in your life next year then spend the next couple of months really thinking it through. Do the pros and cons list and really think of the long term implications rather than just how you are feeling right now.
Sagittarius: A new hobby is giving you so much pleasure you wish you had started it years ago. It also makes you much more constructive and positive with the rest of your life. It is so good that you want everyone to try it.
Taurus: Stop seeing things that a friend does through rose tinted glasses. You have been sticking up for them for too long. Talk to them and let them know how others are feeling, as this is the only way they will change their ways.
Virgo: You are keen to make some radical changes where finances are concerned. They have been in the pipeline for a while but now you are ready to take the plunge. Those around are much more open to this than you could have imagined.
Capricorn: You have two months to prepare for Christmas - sounds easy but with the plans you have you will need every minute of that time. You will either need to delegate or cut back a bit on some of the ideas. It shouldn’t be this hard!
Gemini: A new friendship is like no other you have had and it has taken you by surprise just how deep your feelings are. Not romantically, although to some this may seem odd and to your partner a threat. Tread carefully or you’ll lose both.
Libra: Small things are building up into bigger problems. You need to start addressing them earlier or you will all suffer. Someone special makes you feel like the most important person in the world without even knowing it - that makes it all the more amazing.
Aquarius: Spending more time with your friends is really helping you at the moment. You had been putting it off in case there were awkward moments but they have really pulled through for you. It is so good to have so many true friends at a time like this.
Cancer: Your mind is taken up from now with planning towards Christmas. The presents, food, parties, family, friends and all that makes it so special are on your mind and you are almost wishing the time away. Careful or you will make it stressful and not fun.
Scorpio: Everyone is giving opinions and ideas but no one is actually willing to take responsibility and take control of the situation. Think before taking this on. Don’t go ploughing into something you are not confident you can keep control of.
Pisces: Money matters are meaning you need to budget or you will overspend leading up to Christmas. If you are clever you can do it without anyone even noticing. Some well thought out gifts will be as well received as more expensive ones.

“It’s an injection of fun” Mark Jones from Jávea worked in the oil industry and has used gyms all over the world until his retirement two years ago. Used to a ‘3 week on/3 week off’ rota, suddenly Mark found himself no longer jetting off to an oil rig on the North Sea, but now having time on his hands and wishing to find a really good gym to exercise at. CLUB F!T had just opened, so Mark came with a couple of friends to try it out, and he has never looked back. “Immediately I was hooked, CLUB F!T is like no gym I had experienced ever.” He continues “The equipment is so totally different; I initially tried a session on the CoreStix, almost thinking that it was too easy for me, but the following day I really knew that I had exercised!” Now, 18 months on, Mark is an ‘old hand’. “Whenever I do a session at CLUB F!T, for example a ‘Drumbeats’ session, even before I get to my car outside to drive home afterwards, an email has been sent to me giving me a readout of how many calories I have burned during the session, a graph showing my work rate and progress; all the data is captured. This even works if you move from one activity session to another, or from one piece of equipment to another, everything gets recorded through the heart rate monitors that everyone wears, and importantly the heart rate monitors are really easy to understand and help to keep you exercising in the yellow and green zones, where you are exercising the most efficiently and safely. It’s brilliant! At every other gym I have been to it has been very inaccurate about how much work you have done, here at CLUB F!T the information about your workout is instant and accurate!” As a result over the 18 months, Mark has lost 5kgs in weight, toned up significantly, and has been able to completely stop taking the high blood pressure tablets that he was taking when he started. “The other important thing for me has been how much fun it has been coming here” says Mark. “At other gyms it was often a chore to go along, it is never like that here. I look forward to every visit, everyone here is like an extended family, and CLUB F!T has been like an injection of fun into my life. The instructors are brilliant, and so clever and willing to help. For example, I have had to have my left knee replaced twice, and even when I take part in a group session the instructors guide me in the right exercises that I should do, specifically for my needs. It is like having a one-to-one personal trainer but still having the fun experience of being part of a group!” Female Focus would like to thank Mark for being interviewed, and if like him you would like an injection of fun, contact CLUB F!T on 865 664 888 or call in to see how they can help you. The countdown to Christmas begins I can’t believe it, I’ve been seeing Christmas ads since the beginning of October. But it does serve to remind me to get organised and start ordering the essentials. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a traditionally roast turkey at the centre of the Christmas dinner table, and where better to get yours than at the World Famous Bacon Joint in Calpe. If you haven’t discovered The Bacon Joint for yourself, allow me to enlighten you. They were one of the first English butchers on the coast, having set up shop 35 years ago. Lots has changed since then, but not the traditional service from Keith and his band of merry men. As you might expect, The Bacon Joint can supply you with quality fresh meat and precooked pies. Their pies are freshly made on the premises and, as a regular I can easily vouch for their authenticity and tastiness! For all your fresh meat, it’s worth making the effort to visit The Bacon Joint. Now, onto Christmas. November is when you should order your turkey and all your other joints. You can be assured that you’ll be able to collect only top quality meat, helping you enjoy your perfect Christmas. The Bacon Joint is in the centre of Calpe on Calle Delfin (bottom of Avenida Gabriel Miro). Or just call on 96 583 0521.
ADAPT Tonne of Money Collection helps local school children
For several years now the ADAPT association in San Pedro del Pinatar has made a significant donation of essential school materials to children from poorer families who attend Las Esperanzas school in San Pedro. The money comes from our Tonne of Money collection and is always received with great appreciation. In Spain children have to provide all their own materials and this can be a big drain on a family budget. Three Seeded Naan Bread
This is such an easy and quick recipe. Naan is leavened flat bread originating from Persia, it has a dense chewy texture, ideally for scooping up spicy sauces, dips and chutneys. Traditionally baked on the side of a hot tandoori oven, we make this version without yeast and cook on a tawa (Indian griddle pan) or a non-stick frying pan will suffice. Ingredients 400g self raising flour (and extra for rolling) 125ml plain yoghurt 150ml whole milk 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon nigella seeds 1 teaspoon mustard seeds 1 teaspoon cumin seeds 1 teaspoon fenugreek leaves optional Butter or ghee for brushing optional TIME: 20 minutes to cook. Resting dough 45 mins/overnight Makes/Serves 8 Recipe 1. In a mixing bowl add the dry ingredients mix together (flour, salt, seeds and fenugreek leaves). Create a ‘well’ in the middle. 2. In a jug mix the yogurt and milk, pour the liquid into the ‘well’ and mix to a sticky dough. 3. Cover the dough. Leave to rest for 45 minutes or overnight. 4. Turn dough onto a floured board, knead with some flour and divide into 8 pieces. 5. Form each piece into balls and roll out into an oval/tear drop shape between 2-4mm thick. 6. Heat a non-stick frying pan or tawa to a medium/ hot heat. 7. Cook the naan on one side until large bubbles form and the bottom has brown spots, turn over and cook until the underside is dark brown. 8. Brush butter or ghee over the naan - wrap in a clean tea towel to keep warm. TIPS: Before cooking stud slithers of garlic into the bread. The dough can be prepared in advance and stored in the fridge, just bring back to room temperature before cooking.

Ciudad Patricia’s newest building is taking shape
By Amanda Hobbs – Ciudad Patricia 23rd October 2017 Based on the number of emails and phone calls I regularly receive, it’s clear that many of you have been following the progress on the construction of our new building at Ciudad Patricia. In particular, I’ve have been delighted to show through our detailed ‘quality description’ all the steps we’ve taken to significantly exceed Spanish contraction standards. The feedback has been so encouraging. Iris, as the new building is known, was conceived to offer an even greater level of modernity and luxury to our range of luxury retirement apartments in the beautiful and extensive parkland that makes up our senior resort. It’s been designed specifically to appeal to people who quite rightly are looking for something a bit special and unique and the perfect home to enjoy life in their retirement years. In November, we’re delighted to have started the ‘topping off’ which means the roof is going on and Phase 2 is nearly done. The next phase is to construct internal walls and after that the ‘fitting out phase’ begins in readiness for our newest resident to start moving in on schedule next October. Of the 15 apartments we’ve already pre-sold 9 apartments with availability on each of the 3 floors. Now that we can see ‘bricks and mortar’, interest in the apartments has recently stepped up and we are showing more and more people how they can enjoy their senior years. Many people have planned ahead, which from experience leads to a much easier life. If you’re thinking about your future, the time is NOW to make an appointment and come and discuss your options. All apartments in Ciudad Patricia ore offered on a ‘lifetime right of use basis’ and we have a sensible refund policy should you decide to move on. I’m so happy to have helped so many people to a truly happy life here at Ciudad Patricia and I’d be happy to answer any questions you have. Call me on 673 064 288 or email ahobbs@ciudadpatricia.com. Heading into Winter We often have some fantastic weather at this time of year, in fact I would dare to say that for a lot of us who live here, Autumn and Spring are the most enjoyable times of year.
www.charlesworthgardens.com
Your garden will be having a lovely blush now during the last of the growing weather for the year. We are very lucky that, unlike lots of places around the globe we get a great growing season with two blooms in Spring and Autumn. Because of this I don’t really have to give a list of Autumn flowering plants, as your normal plants in the garden should be doing this. I will create a flowering plant list for the winter in January’s issue. At this time of year your garden will need a trim, but a trim not a good pruning. Always be aware of this. You are heading into the time of year when growing is not part of the plant’s agenda, and therefore cutting it deeply now makes it difficult for the plant to recover as it is slowing its growth rate down, not speeding up as it would be in spring time. So remember only trim back the growth that has happened since summer. It is the longer leggy growth that shoots up at this time of year, trim this off and that way your plant (if it has been pruned correctly before) should now be just a good healthy size without the leggy shoots. The remaining growth is what helps protect the plant during the winter, so leave it on. I am sure you wouldn’t want to stand naked in the cold so why would you do it to your plants.

Trees are a slightly different problem to deal with. At this time of year, experience has taught us that you have to prune your trees reasonably well, as the increased chance of high winds and rain, and especially the two things together, can see your lovely big trees which may have been in the ground for years blown over and it can be a real shame to lose such large and important plants from your garden. You need to do two main things, firstly cut out and remove branches from the middle of the tree and secondly, remove length from the branches. The simple reasons are that by removing growth from the middle of the tree (which you don’t want anyway, for a number of reasons) it allows air to pass through and then reducing the branches in length keeps them stronger, less likely to snap and reduces the overall area which wind can catch the tree. All of this greatly reduces the stress on the trunk and the roots of the tree. The main thing to do, even if you are having to work hard in the garden is enjoy it, for me there isn’t a greater feeling than doing some hard work and then sitting and relaxing, having a warm drink in the garden. This is the time of year when the garden can be used differently and the introduction of a fire pit in the garden or terrace can inject a new feeling of warmth into your garden or outside space allowing you to enjoy it just a little more than you normally would. You can use fire pits that also double up as barbecues which makes it even more fun especially if friends come around. Enjoy your garden and if you need help with any landscaping work or gardening information you can always contact us. We can come and create a perfect garden space for you or supply any product required for the garden for you to get the best from it. Go out and enjoy your garden. Practical and Functional Taking up little space roller blinds can provide a neat solution for kitchen and bathroom windows especially when using PolyScreen fabric which can be easily cleaned using mild detergents. If you have no shutters at your windows then black out roller blinds can provide the darkness you need to get a good night’s sleep and can be softened with the addition of curtains or sheers. If you are looking for privacy then translucent roller blinds are a good substitute for sheer curtains and come in a range of pleasing colours and textures. In rooms where space is at a premium, roller blinds provide a compact solution where curtains would otherwise take up valuable room. And when reverse rolled they avoid the handles on most modern windows. Speciality Fabrics Our most popular type of roller blind are those made from Polyscreen fabrics which are ultra-resistant to fading or degradation from UV. Available from small to extralarge dimensions and able to be fully motorised and automated, screen blinds can be used to give year round protection as a substitute for shutters, and are often seen as a standard fit in the large glassed areas of Ibizan style villas. The mesh effect of the weave allows a great deal of outward visibility during the day without the room losing privacy. The material filters the sun’s rays whilst letting in the maximum amount of light, thus protecting furniture from damage by sunlight, and by filtering the sun’s rays it helps to lower the temperature of a sun drenched room. Aesthetically pleasing Roller blinds are an extremely practical solution but can lack the aesthetics of a more traditional window dressing. However when combined with the clean lines of a coordinating upholstered or aluminium finish pelmet, the mechanism can be cleverly disguised and the overall feel softened. Adding a metallic chain and decorative counterweight can also add some class, or the blind can be used as the practical part of a more decorative combination with sheers, curtains or dress curtains, even those already installed. If you think roller blinds might prove a good solution for you, then simply pop to our studio to see the options or give us a call to book a no obligation home visit. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Holzhandel Vergel is a well known timber merchant, established for over 13 years, dedicated to the sale of timber, plywood, gypsum board, OSB and the construction of wooden structures. Their products are not just for trade professionals; they are the perfect partner for you in the supply and measuring of wood for wooden houses, carports, animal shelters, porches, decking, fencing and the like. They also offer sales and construction of pergolas, roof structures, terrace shades, bungalows and saunas. Birch Firewood Right now, Holzhandel Vergel has taken delivery of a vast amount of birch firewood, all ready for when the cold winter comes. And oh yes, as we full time residents know, the winters here in Spain can be very cold indeed. Birch is a wonderful firewood mainly because of the lovely smell given off during burning, but also because it is a heavy wood but not too heavy. So whilst it burns for a long time, has a good fuel value, is a good fire starter and gets going quickly, it is not too heavy to carry. Jávea Connect To The Rescue! Members of Jávea Connect have pulled together to help the plight of a lesser known worthy cause, that is APROP the Pego Dog and Cat Refuge (Associació Protectora D’Animals de Pego).
This animal refuge is in desperate need of financial and manual assistance to bring the facilities up to the standard that the animals deserve. Thanks to some members of Jávea Connect, 600€ was raised recently to assist with the purchase of building materials that will allow new kennels and other facilities at the refuge to be improved, which were in a dire state. The money has been well spent on roofing panels to protect the animals from the elements as well as building materials to construct new pens, as last year during severe storms they had to be evacuated due to flooding. The attached photo shows from left to right, Nigel Webb from Jávea Connect handing over the bumper cheque to Derek and Sue Lundgren who do so much to co-ordinate work at the project. Derek has been working tirelessly on his own for the last few months, single-handedly constructing new facilities, he has recently be joined by some Jávea Connect members who are giving up their time to help him. If you would like to make a donation or offer some time to provide voluntary work at the refuge, either walking dogs or manual labour, then please contact Nigel Webb:email: nrw1950@gmail.com or Sue Lundgren:- email: suederek@live.co.uk.

Birds of a feather Birds are fascinating creatures, from their intelligence to their song, their colours, shapes and sizes, the bird world is huge. There are over 9000 species of them and they have been evolving ever since the Jurassic period and are closely related to dinosaurs! We love birds at the clinic and have a great respect for these creatures, and we have reared many wild birds to help the wildlife centre. We would love people to know that they make fantastic companions and have huge personalities. There are so many different species we can’t talk about all of them and each breed has its own special care. It is important to know that birds form very special bonds with their owners, in many cases those bonds can never be transferred to another human being, this is why in larger parrot species, re-homing a bird can be extremely traumatic for the bird, causing stress related illnesses such as plucking feathers. When we decide to get a bird we must think very hard and research carefully the breed of bird you would like, as some breeds can live over 30 years and are a large commitment. Some species are highly intelligent and without proper training and knowledge you could end up with a bird that can scream up to 120db - that is louder than an emergency vehicle’s siren - and they can destroy your furniture. Some birds, for example the cockatoo, are as intelligent as a two year old. The drawback being they can also have a tantrum like a two year old, for any reason they see fit. They are also equipped with a beak like a pair of pliers. That is why it is so important to know what you are getting into... 30 years of having a two year old! Some species can learn up to 200 different sounds, the most interesting is the lyre bird, able to mimic other species of bird but also man made noises like car alarms and chainsaws! The most intelligent is the crow, they are smarter than great apes and about on par with a 5-year-old child. We know they (and similar birds) can complete complicated tasks and multi-step puzzles. We know all of that sounds terrifying but on the plus side there are many wonderful reasons to own a bird. However, as with getting any animal, proper research is key. If you have a bird, or are thinking of getting one, please don’t hesitate to contact us for our expert advice. Article suuplied by Clinica Veterinaria El Puerto in Jávea. English spoken. Av. SAMM Members Party at Caldero Day Thursday October 12th is the Hispanic Day public holiday in Spain and is also celebrated in Los Alcazares as Caldero Day, the date Los Alcazares became an independent municipality in 1983. Over 100 peñas (clubs and associations) plus many family and friends groups gather on the beach to eat, drink and be merry and there is the smell of charcoal burning for paellas and BBQs, music blasting out, singing and laughter as people party from early morning until late in the evening along the length of the paseo. For several years SAMM has joined this gathering and, of late, had a theme for the day to allow the extroverts to dress up and make fools of themselves. This year the theme was the Rocky Horror Show and over 20 people arrived in costume, including the past and present Commodore, to close the paseo every hour on the hour and perform the Time Warp dance routine to much applause from the passersby who could not pass by. Many other sensibly dressed members came and went throughout the day so the SAMM section of the beach was crowded with up to 50 or 60 people most of the time. SAMM funds were used to provide wine, beer, soft drinks nuts and nibbles for all and the Balaton Group provided bratwurst sausages and onions, cooked by Colin Finch, with bread and mustard free to their group members. Jack Moss and others offered trips round the bay in one of the Shoestring Groups Gamba dinghies and there were many takers. Julian Pering also bought his beach version of the air ball game that had proved so popular last year where teams of six each with a goal keeper, complete in a knockout competition. Great foolishness and fun for both competitors and spectators. We can’t wait for next year, wonder what the new theme will be? U3A Vall del Pop Singers: Cake & Cava Afternoon The U3A Vall del Pop Singers [VdP Singers] gave their first presentation of the new season, entitled 'Thank You for the Music', on 10th October. This first presentation of their versatility and wide-ranging repertoire of popular songs was performed around the pool in the garden of Bob & Sandra Welham, on a beautiful sunny afternoon in the peaceful countryside on the edge of Murla – where the singing was complimented with cake and cava, to get us in the mood. The VDP Singers have been with their new Musical Director, Philip Ashley, since February and as he says ´they continue to improve and are singularly focused on singing for pleasure´. Each Tuesday afternoon practice session is focused on the fun of singing and having a good time. Yarn & Thread – Patchwork Presentation Some 19 members of the Yarn & Thread Group gathered at the Cappuccino Coffee Bar in Orba on 9th October for their first full working meeting, and a presentation on patchwork by Rebecca Ainsworth, who is a professional needlewoman, as well as an avid knitter, and the group leader. Rebecca explained the principles of patchwork and demonstrated how to prepare the pieces of material and to assemble them into the overall patchwork. Two of the members showed their completed articles, a quilted jacket and a through-over blanket – which encouraged us all as to what can be achieved. And what about cross-stitch, tapestry, embroidery and crochet, or any of the other crafts that use yarn and thread? These will be presented and discussed at the following meetings. So if you like the idea of relaxing in a group of friendly people, with a cup of tea/coffee and a piece of cake by your side, chatting, sharing patterns and hints, and encouraging each other to attempt something new – anyone fancy lacemaking? – then contact Anna Cameron at 96 640 8165 or email her at annabcameron@hotmail.com to express an interest. For further information check our website [http://u3avalldelpop.com]. The U3A is all about enjoyment and learning, and this is particularly evident in the U3A Vall del Pop, whose members hold their General Meeting on the first Thursday of each month at the Centre Polivalent in Murla. For information on the available groups and their meeting dates please contact our Groups Coordinator, Marie Fitzgerald, by email at groups@u3avalldelpop.com.

Christmas Appeal for the children of the Preventorio in Gandia
For the past 3 years I (Katie Louise) have organised a Christmas shoebox appeal for the children of the Preventorio in Gandia (The Children's orphanage). This orphanage is not government funded and they live on donations. I have been with food and donations before and the children always touch my heart, they have nothing but they are all still smiling and that's down to the volunteers and workers! They do a grand job! This year I asked one of the ladies at the orphanage for an up to date list of children, gender and ages so I could organise the collection of gifts, she replied with the news that they are struggling so much and have near to no kitty left and as it stands they can't afford to pay for the fuel to heat the home or cook the children's food let alone everything else. I asked her how I could help? She said they need nearly 10.000€ just to get them through the next few months but the fuel and dental bill for one of the children equals to about 5000€. I told her to leave 5,000€ to me and by the 1st December I would like to hand that amount over through fundraising. If anyone would like to donate they can by... PayPal – syss.charity@gmail.com. If anyone would like to donate by bank transfer please email syss.charity@gmail.com. Drop off points for Christmas shoeboxes are:- Quicksave, Albir - The Property Team, Jalon - Molino Villas, Moraira - The Final Whistle, La Marina Urb - Christmas Fair, Flash Hotel, Benidorm 8th December. All gifts to be at the drop off points by the 8th December please. Thank you.

Jávea U3A monthly meeting Have you heard the one about the defendant who told the court he had lost his memory only to be asked by the barrister to give an example of something he had forgotten? This was just one of a number of real courtroom quotes told to Jávea U3A members at their monthly meeting by guest speaker, company lawyer Peter Davies. Peter’s anecdotes rounded off a humorous yet informative talk entitled “Bill Gates, Steve Jobs … and Me!” He entertained his audience at the Parador with tales of his time working for US technology companies, including an insight into the wacky world of Silicon Valley and his experiences working with Gates and Jobs, co-founders of Microsoft and Apple respectively. Jávea U3A president Eric Atkins thanked Peter for a highly interesting presentation. Tony Grande, founder of Make a Smile – the U3A’s nominated charity of the year – gave a short talk, explaining the work of the charity and how it runs seven houses, looking after 96 children from hostile backgrounds. He said they had experienced some difficult financial times since the collapse of their parent company, but that there was light at the end of the tunnel. He appealed for help, stressing that the charity needed volunteers as well as financial support. The U3A had 33 new members join up at the meeting and now has a record membership of 1,853. There are more than 50 groups, with a new cribbage and computer group coming soon. For details of all the activities and how to join, visit the website at www.u3ajavea.org.

English Choir of TeuladaMoraira autumn concert After a well earned summer break the English Choir of Teulada-Moraira has returned to their rehearsal rooms in Teulada with renewed vigour. The first concert of their heavy schedule was held on 5th October at Ermita San Jose. The choir played to a full house and the sum of 900€ was raised in aid of the Costa Blanca Chaplaincy’s charitable interests.
The choir is now well into rehearsal for their own autumn concert. Entitled "A Little Light music" it will be cabaret style and will be held in the Pensionista Suite which is opposite Teulada Town Hall in la Plaza de la Constitution on Friday 10th November at 7pm. The programme is an excellent mix of styles and genres. It contains some of the fun numbers from the Mikado, giggling fan waving school girls, The Pirates of Penzance when the gentlemen will don their policeman’s helmets and the cachucha from the Gondoliers which will have you longing to join in the dance. Popular songs by Bizet and Verdi also feature as do excerpts from Fiddler on the Roof, Phantom of the Opera and Salad Days, finishing up with music by Sting and Lehar's delightful Merry Widow and lots more in between. Tapas and wine will be served making it a marvellous evening with something for everybody. Tickets costing 12€ each can be obtained by phoning Janet Brown on 96 574 5091 or email janetbrowncraft@gmail.com. All profits will go to the Alzheimer's Day Centre Teulada.

Amigos de Make A Smile Charity shop The shop opened its doors in June and since then has been very popular with the Teulada locals and international clientele from up and down the coast. It was set up by Barbara and Dennis Carrier and their team of willing volunteers to help support Make A Smile's projects including sponsorships for further education, grants, apprenticeships, birthday presents and extracurricular activities. As Emaus closed its doors at the end of June, the new company “Salud y Comunidad” are providing all basic needs for the children and mentally challenged youngsters in Relleu, however like most associations, they are very interested in receiving support from the local community and are fully behind Make A Smile's projects. At the charity shop, you can find many items for the home, a large collection of clothes, books and a myriad of quality goods for a fraction of the price of the high street. The shop is situated at the bottom of the dual carriageway in Teulada and is open from 10am to 1pm Monday to Friday. New volunteers are very welcome if only for a few hours a week and if you have anything to donate, please take it to the charity shop or The Bed Centre in Calpe. Call 634 307 385 or email info@makeasmile.es for more information.
FREE SPIRITS HD “RIDE IN STYLE” Free Spirits HD started their “Ride in Style” initiative with a very successful ride with three local ladies in the Moraira area of the Marina Alta. It was Millie Munro’s birthday and friends Audrey and Deidre came along to celebrate the occasion. The three ladies were all very excited as this was the first time any of them had been on a Harley Davidson. They were taken around Javea by Director Barry Haylor, Simon Brooks Charity Co-ordinator and Free Spirits member Alistair Hogg, stopping on the beach for coffee. If you or any of your friends would like the same experience then please contact Free Spirits HD on freespiritshd@gmail.com. Free Spirits HD in its current form was launched in January 2016 and the group and its rides are administered by a small committee. Members must own a Harley Davidson and be English speaking. At present the group is made up of over 50 members - riders and pillions – who enjoy rides throughout the year which include coffee and lunch stops, all planned by the road captain running the ride. Free Spirits HD are always ready to welcome new members, for more information contact Barry Haylor, Director – 629 728 375 or via the website: www.freespiritshd.com or email: freespiritshd@gmail.com.
