Local optometrists return home with invaluable experience from world-class eye hospital Sergio Bordajandi and Miriam Garcia Verdu from Alicante have recently returned home to the Costa Blanca after four years working and gaining experience in the UK to start work at Specsavers Opticas in Jávea and Calpe. They both studied optometry at the University of Alicante, before doing a Masters in Clinical Optometry at the Universidad Europea de Madrid. After gaining work experience locally, they decided to move to the UK to further their careers and improve their English. While in the UK, they worked for several leading opticians, including Specsavers, and had the incredible opportunity to work at Moorfields Eye Hospital, a world-class centre of excellence for ophthalmic research. By working there, they were able to be at the cutting edge at ophthalmology and learn a huge amount. After four years in the UK, Sergio and Miriam were missing home and wanted to be closer to family, so contacted Specsavers in the Costa Blanca. Due to their qualifications, experience, native Spanish and very high level of English they made ideal candidates. They returned home last October and have been settling back into life in Spain. Sergio said, “It’s great to be home! Working in the UK was a very positive experience as I was able to experience optometry at the highest level. However, you can’t beat the lifestyle and weather here on the Costa Blanca, so I am delighted to move home. Specsavers Opticas is a great place to work, with a comprehensive professional eye test which ensures that your eyes are healthy, as well as your vision is good. I look forward to helping residents of Jávea and Calpe to get the best eye care and help them to find the solutions they need.” To book an appointment for an eye test with Sergio or Miriam, or to ask for their advice, call the store in Jávea 96 646 3420 or Calpe 96 583 5367, or find your nearest store on the website www.specsavers.es.

Workshops in the craft fair of Jávea Port are getting to be very popular Every Sunday morning between 10am and 3pm craft people from the area come together on the seaside boulevard in the Port of Jávea to set up their stalls. Some weeks ago they decided to include a workshop for children in their little fair. These workshops have proved to be very popular: every Sunday at midday the children crowd around the table where one of the craft people teaches them to make a bracelet, a little sculpture or some juggling balls. As the participants take turns, the children can learn something different every Sunday. The craft market in Jávea Port is quite special, in that everything sold is made by the people on the stalls. Thus you can be sure that you can find something original for a reasonable price, as you buy directly from the artist or artisan. The fair is advertised with the label "Artesanía de Autor®". The stalls open at 11am and stay until 3pm or later. The workshop is at 12 noon and is free. For more information (also in English) you can ring the organisers, craft association Amata, at 639 979 678. At http://www.amata.es/JavSunSpr_18.html you can see some photographs of previous Sundays.

Spring Cleaning, Crypto-Currencies, and Opening the Vault! The month of April is the start of Spring, the time to clean the house and gardens. It’s also the best month to spring clean your finances. Here are my ‘top tips’.
www.femalefocusonline.com
by Steve Iball, Area Manager deVere Spain
1. If you’re not fully retired, then ask yourself “do I have any frozen company or personal pensions left in the UK?”. If the answer is ‘yes’ then my first tip is to ask you to question just how safe they are and what options exist to maximise their value. 2. Check what savings interest rate you are getting and in particular is it above inflation (current 2-3%). And whilst you’re at it, is it more than 50,000€ and will it impact your legal requirement to report it in Spain (Modelo 720)? 3. Ask yourself if it might be wise to get a 2nd opinion on your investments so you are maximising growth and saving on Spanish tax. 4. With less than 1 year to go, ask yourself if Brexit is going to affect your finances and especially any inheritance issues. 5. Keep up to date with ‘what’s new’. So, what is new in the world of finances? At deVere, we’ve recently introduced our Mastercard backed Vault Currency Exchange and Debit Card which allows you to easily change balances between currencies and pay for stuff whilst travelling. We’ve also just launched deVere Crypto – our easy to use app which allows you hold crypto-currencies (eg bitcoin). We’re excited about this as it could be the ‘new money’ in the future and as always, we like to be ready for the future. And in other news, we’ve just won another independent award – 2018’s leading experts in Pension Planning and Investment Solutions. Finally, seeing is (as they say) believing and I’m pleased to confirm that Freddie Streeter (Sales Director for Pacific Asset Management) will be joining me at the upcoming Homes and Gardens show in Altea (20 and 21 April). We will be in attendence both days. On Saturday 20 April, Freddie will be delivering a wide-ranging presentation on financial matters. There will be an opportunity to win a Vault Card pre-loaded with £100. I hope to see you at the show where we’ll be on hand to answer questions and explain more about how we can help you maximise your finances. deVere has increased its staff to 45 financial advisers in Southern Europe, we’re fully regulated in Spain and are proud of our track record. Isn’t it time you got deVere working for your future? For more information, contact me on 610 822 484 or email steve.iball@devere-spain.es.

The New European Data Protection Law
Many have not yet realised that on the 25th May 2018 the new European Data Protection Law will come into force. This law was published in the Official European Community Bulletin of the 4th May 2016, applicable two years after, in all member states. Objectives: This law has the intention of returning to the citizens control over the personal data in a world dominated by smart ‘phones and social media, where banking is on-line and purchases made over the internet are now the norm. On the other hand, it intends increasing the security for companies operating with the European Union, but it is also applicable to companies operating with companies with the EU. This way companies are able to make the most of a sole digital market, decreasing bureaucracy and offering consumers greater confidence. Unifying the Regulations: The main change that has been introduced is the unification of all the existing laws within the EU, set united criteria to guarantee the consumer’s rights, as well as making easier the cooperation between the police and judicial authorities. The aim is to avoid that the consumer’s details becoming the object of violations of privacy. For example, one of the proposals is to give Judges the right to stop the transfer of data from the EU to United States of a certain person on a platform such as Facebook. The right to be forgotten: This right gives people the opportunity to delete or block personal information that the person deems to be obsolete or no longer relevant with the passing of time. This affects the right of cancellation and opposition applicable to internet search engines, such as Google. It includes the right to limit the universal and indiscriminate diffusion of personal data when this is no longer of interest, even if the original publication was legitimate. To exercise this right, we must first contact the search engine provider (the largest companies have special forms on their websites). If they do not respond to the petition, or the response is not adequate, you can apply for mediation through the Data Protection Agency (AEPD). Right of transfer of personal data from one company to another: There are two parts to this right: on the one hand there is the possibility of obtaining, on an electronic form, a copy of the data and where it has been sent. On the other hand, you will have the option of transferring these details to another system (to another provider); as long as these details have been automated. The persons holding these details will not be able to object. Should you object the holder of your data has 1 month in which to give a satisfactory response. The fines set for not complying with the law can be up to 500.000€ or 1% of the total of the invoicing of the company in the cases where they do not provide a copy of the data they are handling or they prevent transfer of the details to another company (ie: the telephone companies).
It is business as usual at Parasol Care Centre in Jávea, which is now incorporating The Gift Box where you will find a huge array of unique gifts, affordable and perfect for all your present and card giving needs. Female Focus April 2018
The figure of the Data Protection Delegate: There will have to be a specialist in Data Protection, as well as the person handling the data. He is there to make sure that the law is enforced and will liaise with the AEPD. You can outsource this responsibility to a company specialising in this. New mechanisms of Supervision and Control: The national authorities will be able to authorise the transfer of data before they are transferred. The new authority will be The European Data Protection Counsel. They will have the same function in all the member states, including sanctioning, correcting and investigation. Communication of breaches of Security to the authorities and those affected by the same: As soon as a breach has been detected by the person responsible for handling data, this must be communicated to the authorities (and the persons affected) within a period no later than 72 hours after the detection of the breach. Fines: Depending on the severity of the violation, the fines can be up to 20 million euros or 4% of the volume of business’ total annual turnover. Transfers to other countries: Exporting data to other countries will not require a special authorisation, as long as these are carried out according to the new law.

What an eye-opener! By Sam Kelly, Managing Partner, Chorus Financial. It's been a year since I started writing a regular finance column in Female Focus and I have to say that it's been a real eye-opener! Our offering was a simple one: I would review existing investments for free and without obligation. If I could find areas where Chorus's approach to honest, transparent investment advice would improve the member's position, I would demonstrate it clearly. The most common policies that I have seen have been investments with SEB, OMI and QROPS plans. So far 100% of the policies I have analysed have contained hidden fees. These aren't fees related to the bonds or the QROPS themselves, they are in the underlying funds, and often all the damage is done after you signed up to a long-term policy. The most common cases were when the clients thought they were paying around 2% in charges each year, but due to deeply hidden fees (and not on any of the paperwork) their annual charges were as high as 6-7%. How on Earth a portfolio should be expected to grow each year with charges this high is beyond me! The sad reality is, until the European regulators put a total ban on fund-based commissions, Brits living here in Spain will fall victim to these practices. We're not talking about a small number of advisors either – these practices are utilised by the vast majority of companies, both small and large, in Spain. Any kind of investment carries a degree of risk. I would never sit and promise my clients a particular annual return, or that the markets will never have a bad run. Successful portfolios will always have ups and downs along the way. What I will promise my clients is that they will be fully aware of the total cost of their investments each year. Even more importantly, I will promise that when it comes to choosing the underlying funds that make up my client's portfolios, they will be chosen 100% with my client's best interests in mind. I cannot begin to emphasise how important this is for your long-term financial well-being. Funds will be chosen from the open market, so never ‘in-house’ or ‘special’, they will be UK FCA regulated, unless specifically requested otherwise, they will have proven track records, from well-known and trusted fund-houses, and they will never contain hidden fees or pay commissions. All these elements are the best way to ensure successful medium to long-term investing. If you're considering a new investment, or would like an existing investment reviewed, please contact me for a free 45-minute consultation. You can call me direct on 664 398 702 or email me on s.kelly@chorusfinancial.es.

Local artist illustrates children's book When my mother, Margaret Brown, lost her beloved cat, Tiddles, for three long weeks in the Yorkshire town of Harrogate, she was heartbroken. Then after putting an advert in the local paper, Tiddles was miraculously found and reunited with my distraught and tearful parents. Margaret was so emotional about the whole incident that she decided to record the story for her family by writing a children's book based on the true events of Tiddles' disappearance and imagining what happened to her in between. She never did think of a title for the story but a close friend of mine suggested 'Beyond The Flower Pots' as this was the world in which Tiddles found herself when she was enticed beyond the security of her little patio garden in Harrogate. Shortly after my mum' death, 11 years ago, I found the book's manuscript during a house move and decided to illustrate her story as a special tribute. As I was bringing up a young son and moving home many times- from Spain to England, then Gibraltar and back to Spain again- I kept the book on a back burner for a while, completing the paintings in between other work and commitments. My main line of work involves painting animal portraits on stones and other natural materials and I have undertaken many custom portraits for pet owners in Spain and abroad through my Amazon shop 'Mel's Animal Art'. I finally finished all the illustrations for 'Beyond The Flower Pots' last year and self-published the book through Createspace. I am absolutely delighted with the result and it has inspired me to write and illustrate more books in the future. 'Beyond The Flower Pots' is for sale on Amazon.es, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.com. My name is Steve Woods and I am a solicitor specialising in claims for asbestos related diseases and I thought I would look at a number of questions that often arise and that make people worried about the possibility of making a claim. My message is, if in doubt ask! I CANNOT REMEMBER WHERE I WORKED, OR THE COMPANY I WORKED FOR NO LONGER EXISTS. It is not unusual for companies that traded in the 1960s, for example, to have long since stopped trading. With investigations I can trace insurers who provided cover for these companies and they are obliged to deal with the claims. Even if you are hazy about the exact name of a company or your period of employment with them, I can obtain your work history from HM Revenue & Customs and this provides confirmation of who you worked for all those years ago. I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH AN ASBESTOS CONDITION BUT I DID NOT WORK WITH ASBESTOS. I always like to meet my clients and it is surprising how often, when you start talking about a person's work history, what they remember. Often, it turns out that even if a person did not actually work with asbestos, they worked alongside people who did and therefore came into contact with dust. Another possibility, and a particularly sad one in my experience, is a wife who comes into contact with asbestos from her husband’s work clothes. A RELATIVE HAS DIED FROM AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION BEFORE MAKING A CLAIM. It is not widely known that claims can be made even though the person affected has died (provided the claim is made within 3 years of death). The claim is made on behalf of the person's estate. DIAGNOSING AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION. There are a number of conditions that can be caused by exposure to asbestos, including lung cancer. The main issue is whether the breathing difficulties can be attributed to asbestos. This is the point we have to prove in all respiratory disease cases, not just asbestos related but also, for example, silicosis – medical evidence is required to prove a link. Claims for breathing problems caused by exposure to asbestos can be complex but the quicker the claim is started the quicker these issues can be dealt with. So, if you are concerned about your particular situation or have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch. I am happy to talk to you free of charge. Female Focus April 2018

Fears and Phobias – Anxiety and Stress
“I get knots in my stomach and a tightness inside me when I’m in situations I don’t like.” “When I was a child I collected spiders in matchboxes. These days I ask someone else to get rid of them for me.” “I think and think about things, turning them over in my head and then I can’t sleep.” “I don’t like flying these days but it never bothered me in the past.” “I used to drive everywhere. But, not any more.” “I hate hospitals.” Do you hear yourself saying similar things? A phobia is an irrational fear, literally a fear without good reason, or a fear of something that may not happen. Phobias are far more common than many people realise. Most people manage their phobia on a day-to-day basis and only seek help as a last resort. An irrational fear of something is a learned behaviour, sometimes from a parent or a respected friend or relative. It is part of the body’s natural defence system. Generally, the solution is to see that phobia in a different context, and then by addressing it. By using hypnosis the unconscious mind is able to process information more effectively without the interference of the critical mind. This is known as desensitisation. Anxiety and stress can manifest itself differently for everyone but common physical signs of anxiety or stress are: racing heartbeat, tremors, sweating, panic attacks and insomnia. The symptoms of anxiety correlate with the stress response of “fight-or-flight” and sometimes we may freeze just like a deer in headlights, in traumatic situations, threat or danger. As a hypnotherapist I can help assess the root of stress or anxiety whether it is a situation, a physical issue, a past experience or a relationship. Then I will set you a goal asking how you wish to feel, how you would like to be, and things that you would choose to do in your life if you were free of your fears, phobias, stress or anxiety. Then I will work with you to reach your goals using a range of different and unique techniques. If you can relate to any of these situations and wish to take back control I invite you to look at my website juliandavidson.com to read more information. All enquiries welcome. The secret to Charlie & O's success, as told by one of their loyal customers By Suzanne Millington I first went to Charlie group when Danny Silva was the owner, whilst I was on holiday in 1983. We became good friends when I moved here in 1992 and my whole family always went there and I have remained loyal to this day. I knew Olivia, the current owner, from when she was 3 and attended my drama classes. When she bought the business I was delighted to keep going under her new ownership. I feel very comfortable with her – the staff all spoil me and are always so welcoming. They are attentive and they remember details about me and my children and always ask how they all are. I have had every range of style over the last 30 years! Short, long, every colour you could imagine and my hair has always looked great. They know me well and make suggestions. Now I tend to stick to the same style, and I go for highlights and colour. I would recommend Olivia and her team to anyone, as they are committed to professional development and regularly attend courses in Spain and beyond. Their products are top quality, their prices are competitive, and the salon is stylish and very well maintained. So I go there because of the quality of service and management of my hair as well as the friendly welcome that I receive every time, and I feel they are very deserving of my loyalty. I can also ring at a moments notice and Olivia will always make sure she can fit me in. You can find Charlie & O at Carrer de Joan Fuster 2, Jåvea. Do we really know ourselves? Well if we don’t, who does? We are the only ones who control our thinking, our actions and the results we get ....no other human being is aware of what goes on in our minds, so we are in control as a result of that. Even attitude is important when we don’t want others to try to take control ....think about it. As children we can be guided, controlled and looked after. When we become adults we can choose the kind of person we want to be ....and we can be the best, believe me! When things go wrong, nine times out of ten people blame others. Think about this ....we are all where we are today because of choices we have made. Why allow things in your life that you do not like, or want to get involved in. If we are in a situation we cannot get out of, then ACCEPT that and change your attitude. People in prison who cannot get out can make a difference to their personality by changing the way they behave and liking themselves more. Believe me it works to see things and handle things differently. Our lives can be different as each new day starts, if we handle things in a way that won’t cause offence or bad feelings...we may be out of our comfort zone to handle things differently, but it is definitely worth it to see different results. Don’t allow others to offend you, and if they continue to do so, realise that we have certain people in our lives that maybe were a wrong choice in the first place ....take control and change things. Unless you do, you will not experience the fact that you like yourself and the person you have managed to become. Life can be amazing if we handle things well. Start each day with the hope of improving the way we handle things. Start off with appreciating a new day ....some people don’t have that any more! Until the next time!

Bunions
Bunions or HAV?
Advertising feature
The Bunion or Hallux Valgus is a deformity of the foot caused by a deviation of the first toe towards the middle axis of the foot and a deviation of the first metatarsal towards the outer edge of the foot accompanied by irregular bone growth in the first metatarsal head and articular incongruity of the metatarsophalangeal joint. This causes pain due to inflammation of the soft tissues of the area from constant friction against footwear and from the structural and mechanical alteration due to the bone deviation. When is it recommended to operate on bunions? It is recommended to operate on bunions when they are painful, when osteoarthritis appears or the structural deformity affects walking correctly which in turn affects other levels of the locomotor system. It is also advisable to perform surgery in cases in which as a result of the bunion, the toes are deforming like when the second toe appears hammer-like. When a patient wishes to undergo an operation a professional should study each case individually, taking into account the age, health status, lifestyle ... etc. At Portalet Clinic, we will explain in detail and alleviate any worries without compromise. What type of technique is carried out at Clinica Podológica Portalet? We perform minimum incision surgery. As its name suggests, it is done using minimal skin incisions, usually 2 to 4mm. Through these millimetric incisions we can reach the soft tissues and bone, without causing injury to the adjacent tissues. Advantages of Minimal Incision Surgery: - Immediate recovery as the procedure is minimal. - The patient walks away with a post-surgical shoe without crutches or help. - After just 48 hours the patient can continue life as normal. - Almost painless. - No fixing bolts or needles used. One of the drawbacks of open surgery is the use of fixing materials, with Minimal Incision Surgery fixations are not necessary as the soft tissues themselves, which we have respected, the joint capsule and a light dressing are responsible for this. - Local anesthetic, only affecting the foot, so the dose used is less. - No hemostasia (restriction of blood flow). As the size of the incision is so small, there is little bleeding so there is no need for a tourniquet, thus avoiding all risks of cutting blood flow. - Less risk of infection. The small size of the incisions also decreases the risk of infection. - Barely visible scaring.

Teeth Cleaning and the 5 common mistakes... You cleaned your teeth this morning... so are you sure they are really clean? It is not really easy to see if you have done the job right as plaque is the same colour as the teeth, and that is what you are trying to remove - plus you can only see the front teeth anyway. Hopefully you are AWAKE and thinking clearly when you do them as that would help! Plus… do you really want to breathe stale smelly breath over the next person you meet today? I bet you answer "No", so here are the 5 commons mistakes that people make… 1. Not brushing into the gums around the necks of the teeth. Avoiding the gums will prevent you from removing all the plaque since most of it is next to the gum, and if left there it will eventually infect the gums causing gingivitis, which make the gums bleed on brushing. Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease, when plaque penetrates the gum and it becomes inflamed because of it. 2. Not reaching the back far enough. It takes effort to think and reach right to the very back and once you are there you need to spend a bit more time on that area to be really thorough. 3. Not brushing the insides. This is really common as people seem to think the front of the teeth is most important… not true… also the angle of the brush needs to be adjusted to effectively clean round the insides right to the back top and bottom. 4. Brushing too softly. People seem to be worried about 'harming the gums' which is silly as you do far more damage to gums by not cleaning properly! Also some soft brushes are often too soft and not effective cleaners, whereas hard brush bristles don't bend around so well in-between the teeth, and brushing hard with these brushes is too hard on the gums. So, generally use a medium bristle small headed brush and with this you cannot go far wrong. 5. Not brushing or flossing between the teeth. Many people think this is unimportant and too much bother, but in truth it has increasing importance for adults (not so for children) as the interdental spaces tend to widen as we age and therefore hold more plaque which the toothbrush cannot reach. This plaque left there can cause gum disease and gum pocketing and lead to cavities, most of which start between the teeth anyway. The fact is that if you don’t minibrush or floss, then your mouth is only 60% clean. In short… a quality medium small headed brush, vigorous, circular movements and a thorough job - a maximum clean in the morning with interproximal brushes and a second quicker clean at night. We recommend electric brushes of course, especially Phillips Sonicare. Article by Dr. Karen Gardner at Clinica Dental La Plaza, Jávea, Tel 96 646 1120. Female Focus April 2018

Not all cosmetic procedures have to be drastic Recently we have told you about the transformations that have happened here at Clinical El Arenal, where we have had a complete modernisation of our clinic, and we also looked at some of the top cosmetic procedures currently sweeping the globe following the rise of fitness bloggers, fitstagram, and athleisure as more and more patients opt for procedures which will enhance the work they do in the gym. This month we discuss Tweakments and Eye-brow elevation ....two more top cosmetic procedures currently en vogue. Tweakments In a move away from one-stop procedures like the traditional facelift, patients are opting for smaller 'tweakments' over a period of time to ensure the most natural look is achieved.

An example of a tweakment procedure that is popular is lip restyling or 'Lip-sculpture' which can be used when the upper lip has become thin or even flat and wrinkled, forming the feared 'bar code' look. 'Lip-sculpture' usually involves three visits, performed under local anaesthetic, with the materials being used differing according to each patient needs, and ranging from Hyaluronic acid such as Restylane or Perlane to Hydroxiapatite, Aretecoll, Gorotex, or Aquamid. Eye-brow elevation Symmetry plays an ever important role in the way we feel about our appearance. One of the biggest problem areas that both men and women dislike about themselves? Their eye-brows. From being asymmetrical to completely missing, eye-brows are something that many people are concerned about when they look in the mirror. The eye-brow elevation operation is simple and can give spectacular results and is carried out under local anaesthesia. A tiny incision of less than half an inch is made over the tail of each brow. Tissues are separated to gain access to the periosteum of the frontal bone, where one or two stitches are made to anchor the skin to a higher position. The skin is then closed by invisible intradermal stitches thus leaving practically no scar. The above cosmetic adjustments and many more are undertaken at Dr Poole's clinic in Jávea. Come and tell us about whatever aspect of your body you would like to improve, and we will be very glad to individually assess any case and discuss every possible option in order to choose which one is best for you. First consultative visit is completely free. Dr Ignacio Poole: a certified Family Doctor / GP and a Specialist Surgeon with a Master in Aesthetic Surgery. Clinica El Arenal. Av. Arenal 2, Jávea. Full smile makeover A smile is the most important thing you can wear. With the right cosmetic dentist, the perfect smile is well within reach, and is an investment that won’t shrink, tear, stretch, wrinkle, or wear thin. It’s an investment that can last a lifetime and will be fashionable forever. At Zen Smile Spa Dr Carolyn Carbasse, dental and facial aesthetics specialist, aims to provide individualised solutions to help your smile reach its full potential in terms of aesthetics, comfort, function and long term dental health. after before A smile design is a work of art and usually requires a combination of methods. A patient’s eyes, lips, gum contour and face, are all considered when a new smile is designed. Teeth A large part of the full smile makeover process is correcting any dental imperfections that may be present. An option for masking slightly crooked, cracked or chipped teeth are porcelain veneers. These thin porcelain shells are placed over the front of the teeth to straighten their appearance and fill in gaps. The other great thing about veneers is that we can choose the colour, making it possible for us to turn a dull discoloured set of teeth into a bright white smile in a matter of just 3 weeks. Gums When creating the perfect smile we can not overlook the contouring of the gums. If you have a 'gummy smile' and you want to reduce the visibility of your gums, a recontouring treatment can help you achieve a more balanced smile. This involves removing or reshaping the gum tissue. At Zen Smile Spa gum contouring treatments are carried out by electro surgery making it a completely pain free experience with no down time. The same procedure can also be used for crown lengthening to increase the size of small teeth. Lips A beautiful smile is always framed by beautiful lips. Due to ageing, sun exposure, smoking and other environmental factors, collagen fibres in the lips can break down, causing your lips to look thinner and down-turned, giving you an overall tired or angry appearance. When placing veneers, lips are filled out making them look more youthful, but they can be enhanced with fillers to make them look just perfect and raise the lip line completely. Dr Carolyn Carbasse, our maxillofacial surgeon, is specialised in all the structures of the face and mouth, and as your dentist often spends a long time studying how your smile pulls up and contours your teeth. Therefore, who better to trust with your lips than someone who knows all aspects of your smile?

Sharpening his reactions... Franciso Rosalez is a 32 year old football coach who has played semiprofessional football for Glacis United Football Club in Gibraltar. Now living in Jávea and currently working as a trainer in Pego, Francisco knows only too well how rapid reactions are an absolute must for any sportsperson ...and particularly so for a goalkeeper like him! CLUB F!T has proven to be the absolutely perfect gym for Francisco because of the different types of equipment available. "Many gyms can help you with your flexibility, strength, speed and resistance, but usually you will work on just one of these areas at a time. But on the equipment here at CLUB F!T I can work on all these areas at once, it’s a totally different approach". What does Francisco mean by this? Well, he explains that at an ordinary gym when he's lifting weights to gain strength, he won't be doing anything to improve his speed or his reactions. And when he's on a treadmill he won't be doing anything to improve his resistance or his flexibility. On the other hand at CLUB F!T there are classes, and pieces of equipment, which allow a combination of the activities. For example, the SMARTfit walls which have flashing lights and numbers, and where you have to hit the buttons as quickly as possible in order to put the lights out, is not only great fun, but it improves speed, flexibility, reaction times and it is a cardio workout. All at the same time. "Another one of my favourite classes is the new LaDanza!-Power class with Antonio, it's really great fun" says Francisco. This is a dynamic fitness dance class to hot rhythms composed of styles like salsa, mambo and reggeaton. And with the help of two dumbbells filled with sand, in LaDanza!-Power you not only train your heart, lungs and legs, but also your arms, shoulders and torso. It’s the perfect example of what Francisco means by combined training. What else does Francisco like about CLUB F!T? "Well, I love practising my languages. There are Spanish, English, German, Dutch and even some Italian members here, it is so cosmopolitan and friendly. And the professionalism of the instructors is second to none. Often for half the class I find myself watching them, and trying to remember what they are doing, so that I can use their techniques on the players that I train myself". That has to be good recommendation!
So whether you are a professional sports player, recovering from an operation, or looking to tone up for the beach, come and see us at CLUB F!T and we will work with you to achieve your goals. We are very easy to find, located 5 minutes away from the LIDL store in Jávea, at Centro Comercial Monver, Calle Roma No 3. Tel: 865 664 888 and 602 211 051. www.club-fit.eu.

Journalist and broadcaster Jack Troughton plays ‘Johnny Foreigner’ and casts an eye over Spain and focuses on stories that serve as a gentle reminder he remains an Englishman abroad. Life just needs little things to go wrong when, even as a fairly seasoned traveller, it suddenly feels like you’ve joined the cast of Hollywood comedy blockbuster Planes, Trains and Automobiles - rolling your eyes like Steve Martin and hoping John Candy has remembered a stash of miniatures from the hotel minibar. We have all had to come to accept cheap travel sometimes means being treated like sheep and at the mercy of companies who no longer think the customer is always right; actually sometimes leaving a traveller at the mercy of bullies who clearly don’t give a damn and can be quite rude in informing clients of the facts. Recent travel, including a cross-border trip, sadly in steerage, has woken this particular ovine to the fact not everything in life is a cruise; some things are just meant to ensure you do not have a nice day. It is a tale involving all three modes of transport that made the Martin-Candy story such fun and - for balance - a story that even prepared to hang out flags for Spain’s highspeed train service, the AVE. Catch a flight back to Manchester. Car hire is already on track and prepaid. The (Ford) Fiesta five-door requested has been upgraded to a year-old A Class Merc. Methinks a result – driven one before, although then a manual, this one is a keyless automatic with a stick change (ask the Americans). No problemo ...possibly. Dear readers, always think about excess insurance. Oh, and check the petrol. A week of happy, careful but not excess covered driving follows. Car great but arrive back to drop off the wheels and there’s a hitch – actually a tiny scratch under a rear door found by a Sherlock Holmes type. It was not me peeps, but, given that apparently everyone says that and the man looks pained and explains the damage was possibly a stone on the M56 road works, we have to move on. I like understanding; it makes the United Nations go round. Said scratch is £375 to fix and so we use a different card to the one holding the deposit. Mafia allows us to leave. Weeks later and there’s no refund on the £400 deposit on the other card. Go to Spanish bank. Bank advises go to Guardia Civil. Send a string of emails to car hire company. Deposit money leaves bank account – send more (strongly-worded) emails and finally get refund less handling charge. Ouch, no, double ouch! Things are further going downhill with a long wait on the tarmac back at Manchester Airport at an (early, early morning) hour when your correspondent is usually still dreaming. Worse still, the sky is full of sleet. However, the sun is shining in Alicante; possibly. Passport control in Alicante is officially undergoing an upgrade, apparently for those electronic passports designed to ease people through the borderline. There is a scrimmage of around 400 people – those with European identity cards and children pass through a physically manned gate. This is the low season and 30 minutes or even 40 minutes later there has been a slight reduction in people, who, sloth-like, are trying to use one of the hi-tech travel document machines in a very cramped hallway with low ceilings. There is no air, or airport managers; it gets hot and annoying as stag /hen parties fail in an attempt to entertain. Complaints have apparently been received and understood – border security is after all very important – and the six scanners will be joined by many more ...hopefully with ones that swiftly work ahead of the summer migration. However, and moving on in a positive way, discovering the AVE (the Alta Velocidad Española) can be a train service to simply dream about. It links up Spanish cities, it is comfortable, clean, and whisks everyone from A to B while charging up their phone, allowing passengers to work on a laptop (or even watch inflightish entertainment) with the thrill of a speedometer in the carriage (scary!). Slight glitch, given the slow release of tickets, it can be a little difficult to sometimes reserve a seat without an insider knowledge – but, hey, let the train take the strain.

What to do in the event of someone being poisoned‌ With poisoning very much in the UK news recently, we thought that this month we would take a look at the most immediate things to do should someone swallow or touch a hazardous substance. Whilst there is probably rather little you can do for oneself if you are an ex-spy targeted with nerve gas, for the rest of us the most probable risk is that we will accidentally swallow or come into contact with one of the many dangerous cleaning products, cosmetic products, medicines, pesticides or plants and fungi that may be in and around our homes. Many of these are brightly coloured liquids, pills or flowers, and so are very attractive to children. So of course the best protection is to keep all medicines and household products locked up and out of a child's sight and reach, and to use safety latches on drawers and cabinets wherever you keep objects that may be dangerous. Poisoning is when a person is exposed to a substance that can damage their health or endanger their life and in 2016-17, almost 150,000 people were admitted to hospital with poisoning in England. Poisons can be swallowed, absorbed through the skin, inhaled, splashed into the eyes, or injected. The symptoms of poisoning will depend on the type of poison and the amount taken in, but general signs to look out for include: - vomiting - stomach pains - confusion - drowsiness and fainting fits - convulsions or seizures and in the case of a child, if a child suddenly develops these symptoms, they may have been poisoned, particularly if they're drowsy and confused. What to do If you suspect that someone has been poisoned (or taken an overdose) do not try to treat them yourself. Get medical help immediately. Call your Doctor or a Hospital for advice, if they do not appear to be seriously ill. If they are showing the above symptoms of being seriously ill, then in Spain you should call 112, to report the incident and call for an ambulance, or take the person to your local hospital yourself if you can. If you are a member of the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea then call our 24hr Emergency helpline on 96 579 6099 and we will have one of our state-of-the-art ambulances (think intensive care unit) immediately dispatched and straight on its way to you. Particularly with children in mind, if you find your child with an open or empty container of a dangerous non-food item, your child may have been poisoned. Stay calm and act quickly. First, get the item away from your child. If there is still some in your child's mouth, make him spit it out or remove it with your fingers. Keep this material along with anything else that might help determine what your child swallowed. Do not make your child vomit because it may cause more damage. If your child is showing any of the above symptoms call for an ambulance. Whilst you are waiting for the ambulance to arrive write down the following on a piece of paper, because this information may save time on arrival at the hospital: Your name and phone number Your child's name, age, and weight Any medical conditions your child has Any medicine your child is taking The name of the item your child swallowed (Read it off the container and spell it.) If you are leaving your child with a babysitter, make sure the babysitter knows this information and what to do in the event of any emergency. In serious cases, it may be necessary for the person to stay in hospital for treatment. The good news is that most people admitted to hospital because of poisoning will survive. Membership of the ASOCIACION AMIGOS EUROPEOS DE JAVEA is just ₏50 for a whole year for the whole family. Call their Registration Manager Laure Bolufer on 96 579 6099 (10am to 1pm every weekday.) Nutty Chilli Chocolate Brownies Who doesn’t love a brownie or two? Chocolate, chillies and nuts are a great combination of textures and taste. Having run a coffee shop we discovered there are two camps on the brownie front; chewy and gooey or cakey and crumbly! Whichever type you favour these brownies are supposed to be slightly gooey inside, with a nutty bite. Once out of the oven they continue to cook - try to take them out just before you think they are ready! The key to great chocolate brownies is to use good quality dark chocolate this gives a luscious smooth, deep rich flavour to the brownie. Ingredients 100g butter salted, cubed 200g dark chocolate, chopped 4 medium eggs 250g sugar 100g plain flour
1 teaspoon baking powder 30g cocoa 1 level tbsp crushed/dried chillies 100g nuts, roasted and chopped (optional) Cocoa to dust (optional)
TIME: Prep; 25 minutes. Bake; 25-35 minutes.
Recipe Heat the oven to 180ºC/ fan 160ºC/ gas 4. Line a 22cm square cake tin with baking paper. Place butter and chocolate in a bowl and melt in a microwave. Set aside to cool. In another bowl; whisk the eggs and sugar together until the mixture becomes light and fluffy. Gently fold the chocolate mixture into the egg mixture and sift in the flour, baking powder and cocoa. At this stage add the nuts and chillies; mix well. Pour the batter into the tin and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the top is cracked but the middle just set. Lift out of the tin. Leave – once cooled dust with cocoa powder. Cut into squares and serve. The Spice Sisters are running Indian cookery classes in April. The Joy of Soft Furnishings! Nowadays we think of soft furnishings as either a practical requirement, such as curtains, or as somewhat more luxurious items such as bedspreads, throws and cushions. However their roots actually go back many hundreds of years to when furs and skins were used to provide privacy, insulation, comfort and warmth. The modern day idea of soft furnishings can be traced back to the early 1700s, when the trend emerged for using fabrics not only as a practical commodity, but also as a way of bringing style, comfort and colour to homes. Before the luxury of central heating, the choice of fabrics took the seasons very firmly into account. Just as we swap a winter wardrobe for a summer one, thicker, heavier fabrics were used to create insulation and warmth in the winter, but these were traditionally replaced by lighter, sheer fabrics come the summer. Similar adaptations can be achieved with soft furnishings today, effectively transforming a room without the trouble and expense of redecoration. By having a neutral background scheme, richer, darker colours can be used in the winter to create a sense of cosiness and warmth, and these can be replaced in the summer by lighter pastel shades creating a cool, airy feeling in the same room. It's curtains for you.... Curtains can be the most eye catching use of fabric in a room. Their pure size in proportion with other fabric elements, concentrates colour or pattern in such a way that the whole scheme of the room is inevitably influenced, if not dominated by them. The weight, colour and texture of your chosen fabric will have a dramatic effect on the quantity and quality of light entering a room, creating and influencing the atmosphere and mood, and dictating if the final effect is cosy and warm, or a cool refreshing ambiance. The right style of curtain is the quickest way to soften a stark interior, bring brightness and colour to a room, or conceal an unpleasant view. It can be as simple as a sheer threaded onto a pole, or as ornate as a luxurious display of swags and tails with heavy hanging drapes. Blinds are an alternative to curtains, providing a more contemporary look and feel. They can offer an economic option, requiring less fabric and also taking up less space which makes them particularly suitable for smaller rooms. Too many cushions? From my experience it's a girl thing ...we can never have enough; coordinating cushions add a touch of luxury to a bed, a few scatter cushions on a plain chair add a dash of colour to a dull corner in any room, and a sofa full of soft cushions is heaven when mixed with a glass of wine and a good book! Whereas for men, too many cushions are just an irritating annoyance, items that have no constructive use and are there to be thrown on the floor with grunts and groans whenever they want to sit down ....sound familiar?
&
But cushions are a magical tool in interior design, creating an economical and effective means of adding finishing touches to complete a scheme, or instantly changing the feel of a current scheme. Try mixing different sizes and styles, harmonising or contrasting in colour with other fabrics, and introducing interesting details of pattern and texture. Female Focus April 2018

Throw on a throw Throws can transform an old sofa or chair, or simply provide an added layer of protection that can be easily removed and washed. For something less formal, add a shawl or blanket, or simply a length of fabric, draping it over any piece of furniture to add colour and interest. Finish it off with coordinating braid or tassels for extra finesse. Something for everyone The diversity of colours, patterns and textures that are available in today's fabrics make soft furnishings one of the most versatile and fascinating decorating mediums. Ranging from a cheap and simple alternative to complete redecoration, to a means of creating the elaborate finishing touches to a detailed interior scheme, soft furnishings can be adapted to suit anyone and everyone's requirements. At Lotus Interiors we specialise in the creation of all soft furnishings and with our years of experience and creative know how we can easily help transform your home into a space you'll love. The green, green grass of home We all know how wonderful grass is in the garden, it's one www.charlesworthgardens.com of the best ways of filling large spaces within the garden, it gives lustre and life to a garden space. Grass also adds texture as it isn’t 100% uniform, so it moves, has a tactile texture and we all love it. One of the main problems people encounter with natural lawns in Spain is that the grass is much more coarse and harder to the touch. This is just nature’s way of allowing the grass to survive in the climate we have. The grass we normally get in northern Europe tends to be a rye grass which is a fine bladed grass, but due to the Spanish climate, typical grasses here are much tougher, broader bladed and consequently rougher to the touch. We have all chosen to live in Spain, this brilliantly cultured and sun blessed country, but…. growing natural grass lawns here in Spain is very difficult. To do it properly, do it nicely, and quickly is very difficult. I am not saying you cannot have fantastic natural grass, I see enough golf courses (courtesy of my son) to know it's possible. But these golf courses spend ridiculous amounts and have teams of people to keep them in the best possible condition (and even sometimes they struggle). This is something that most people here don’t want to commit to, both financially and with their own time. I very quickly realised that lawns in Spain were very difficult and costly to maintain. It was around 12 years ago when I was first introduced to artificial grass and I knew it was the answer.

The product has come on significantly in the last 7 years giving the most realistic looking and feeling artificial grass ever. Artificial grass in my opinion is the only answer.
FF - House & Home Page 35 www.femalefocusonline.com Depending on the scenario it can sometimes be cheaper than natural grass, or even if it is a little more, once it is finished it is instantly usable and looks fantastic. Of course, the main benefit to artificial grass is that from that moment of completion it costs you virtually nothing to maintain it.
I recently priced for a large natural lawn area as the customer had more of an interest in a natural lawn. It was a large lawn area, but, the maths was suggesting that even when it was established, to keep it looking good it would consume 1,000,000 litres, yes that’s a whopping 1 million litres of water and worse still, this was only for the hotter 6 months of the year with no allowance for any usage during winter. You will still then have weekly maintenance mowing. To keep a natural lawn looking at its best you need to feed it, annually or at least bi-annually top dress the lawn and then, as with everything, you will still have maintenance issues and running repairs to do on your irrigation system. And remember for anyone saying you can use a bore hole, that’s correct but remember you will have a big electric bill as you will have to power a pump that is pulling water up from around 200m below your feet. I have to rip out existing lawns almost daily, because people are tired of trying with their natural lawns. Artificial grass is amazing, we have the best range of grass types to suit budgets and tastes, all made here in Spain, so do yourself a favour, stop stressing about water bills or scruffy lawns and get it replaced by the company who has been laying artificial grass for over ten years. Artificial Grass Spain (AGS) is a part of Charlesworth Gardens. Grupo CG. If you have any questions you can call, or email and we will send you lots of previous pictures of our amazing grass products. Plant of the month. As it is March /April there is only one contender for me. It’s the Daffodil. Not a typical plant in most peoples’ eyes, but it can be grown here, in a loamy soil with some shade they pop through and give the garden a wonderful zing of colour when it's really needed, and naturally die back into the hotter months. Again, it’s a bulb-based plant so similarly to the Iris, keep it in clumps in the second to third row of planting so they don’t spoil your garden when they die back but they are visible and available to be enjoyed when they are in full bloom.

ARIES A discussion following a difference of opinion with someone will actually bring you closer together than you have ever been. They are as surprised as you are to finally be heading in the same direction, albeit following a rough start. TAURUS Planning a holiday or short break will give you something to look forward to. Keeping something to yourself might not be the best solution. Think it over, you might find that talking it through with someone close helps you see the bigger picture. GEMINI Don't feel intimidated by someone who appears to be out of your league. By simply introducing yourself you will see that they are just as normal as the next person, in fact a lot of their aloofness is to overcome their nervousness. CANCER Someone is trying to put a dampener on everything you do and you can't understand why. Stop wondering and have a chat with them, getting to the bottom of it is much better for the two of you. LEO Your mind is flitting from one thing to another and you are getting nowhere. Stop, concentrate, make a list if necessary and then tackle one thing at a time. VIRGO Feelings are getting out of hand and you need to share them with someone. Magical things will happen when you do. Trust your instincts about a new team member and don't give too much away too soon.
LIBRA Not seeing eye to eye with a family member will actually make you both sit down and sort out some other issues, leading to more positive than negative to come out of this. Take care of health issues now, more than ever. SCORPIO Some social engagements will lead to great networking opportunities and be much more enjoyable and fruitful than you thought when you got the invitation. Use these introductions to expand on these new contacts. SAGITTARIUS An offer of a new experience is too much to resist and you cannot help yourself but go along with it. Don't feel guilty, enjoy it. It doesn't matter what others think, they might even be a little jealous! CAPRICORN Don't let people blame you for spoiling something just because you were the only one telling the truth. They should be paying more attention to what you are saying rather than being cross with you. AQUARIUS Sometimes you just have to deal with things on your own. Nothing anyone is going to say will help you at this point. If you are strong and sensible you will get through this moment. PISCES You are back on track with a goal which has been on and off for so long now. Maybe you should ask for help as you can see that you are not going to be able to tackle it alone, and not to see it through would be a shame for everyone.
On Saturday 10th March Cancer Care celebrated their 20th anniversary at the Parador in Jรกvea. The ballroom was full to the brim with current and past volunteers in the shops, friends and special guests. These included Irene Ellis MBE who founded the charity 20 years ago. Guests from Denia Hospital, La Fe Hospital in Valencia, Anemona, MABS, Help of Denia, Ambulancia Jรกvea and Jalon Valley Help joined in the celebrations. A wonderful evening was enjoyed by all, made even more special by a gift of a plaque commissioned by Mayor Chulvi. We were very proud to have been able to participate in the St Patrick's Day parade at Cabo Roig on 17 March where great interest was shown in the event with many people wanting to participate in the charity walk. The organising committee were also very proud to have been asked to pose for a photograph with the guest of honour former Ireland Taoiseach Brian Cowen, who told us of his interest in the charity and his wife's involvement in it.

Exhibition of small sculptures by Monique Neyzen
COMMUNIT Y NEWS & EVENTS
On Sunday 8 of April at 11am, the inauguration of Bronze in Motion, an exhibition of small sculptures by Monique Neyzen, will take place in the Fundación Klein-Schreuder garden in Alfaz del Pi. Movement is the theme in her work and she is fascinated by dancers and horses. At the inauguration Monique will tell us about her work, while the foundation provides an accompanying glass of wine. Visitors pay the normal entry fee to the garden, i.e. 5€. It is now possible to buy an annual ticket. You pay 18€ for the entry to the garden for yourself and one guest. During a period of one year you can come as often as you please. The guest could be your partner, a family member or your visitor, up to you every visit. Spring has come to the garden. The buds of the trees that lost their leaves start swelling, but those flowering in winter have not yet given up. We have started mowing again. In the garden the weeds are not sprayed but mowed, so now the area looks like a lawn. For more information, please see our website www.klein-schreuder.com. We looking forward to seeing you in the garden!
Concert at the Cave Following last year's very popular Concert at the Cave in Benidoleig, which sold out 3 weeks in advance, the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir have this year booked two successive evenings at the Cueva de las Calaveras on 15 and 16 June. The two concerts will be held in the wonderfully acoustic entrance to the cave, starting at 8.30pm. The choir's Marketing and Publicity Officer, Vernon Pearce, who lives in nearby Orba said, "We are responding to the huge demand for tickets last year and hope that this time we will be able to accommodate everyone who was disappointed. We are very excited about experiencing the acoustics of the cave again and looking forward to bringing a programme of songs, old and new, to an equally appreciative audience from the Orba valley and surrounding area. We are very grateful to Paco, manager of the Cueva de las Calaveras, the Benidoleig Ayuntamiento and the local Proteccion Civil for helping us to once again arrange this unique concert." Tickets for the concert, which starts at 8.30pm, are 10€ and part of the proceeds will donated to the Proteccion Civil Benidoleig. For reservations, please call 96 574 4577 or email cbmalevoicechoir@gmail.com. Early booking is recommended (in fact bookings are already being received) as seating space, which will be in the open air, is limited.

JEC-Costa Blanca inaugural dinner dance The Parador hotel in Jávea was the venue chosen to hold the gala dinner dance inauguration of the new Jaguar Enthusiasts Club of the costa Blanca, which was attended by Mr Graham Searle general manager of the head office in England.
COMMUNIT Y NEWS & EVENTS
As the JEC members started to arrive they were met by Mike and Den in the reception area where a welcome desk had been set up to make sure everyone was given first hand information about the event, and all the Jaguar cars were parked up in a secure cordoned off private area of the hotels car park. At 7pm our guests and members were able to gather together in a private area for a champagne reception before being seated, allowing everyone to meet and greet friends old and new. With the help of Brenda Pike’s well organised seating plan everyone was directed to their tables. Dennis Wilson took to the stage to make the introductions, asking the president of the new Spanish club to come forward to make himself known, and Mr Michael Brook then made a short welcome speech, but the main speaker of the night was Mr Graham Searle who had flown in from England for the event. Mr Searle gave a very interesting talk about the history of the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club from its beginnings to what it has become to date, with clubs world wide. Once the meal was served a very talented female jazz singer entertained everyone with a selection of well known classical songs which enabled our guests to take to the dance floor. The night finally finished after a number of us returned to the public bar area for a night cap where we were able to discuss our very memorable inauguration event that turned out a huge success. If you would like to join us on any future events please contact. Mike on mikebikejec@gmail.com or 640 866 711.
