and something special
I
t’s been quite a month for the astronomy group, we had our first proper get together for a very long time. It was in a bar, naturally, everyone being sensible and vaccinated. I hope it was just the cautious start of a return to group observing and meetings. It was also a month when we had an eclipse, not a very big one here in Torrevieja, but excellent viewing conditions. Like most keen amateurs I use some special equipment to look at the Sun, it saves me from being blinded rather nastily. Even though eclipses are very well understood, actually seeing a chunk of the Sun disappear, and in my case, to see quite a lot of detail, always has a real sense of wonder. I even managed to get a passable photograph this time, I was really pleased until one of my sons friends said it looked like a piece of cheese! Our smartphone competition is still running, I've received some lovely pictures already, you all have until the end of July to email them to me. Some of the best have been taken with no special apps or extra equipment, just care and thought. I'm waiting until the end of July for a reason, there is a really special sight in the night sky on July 26, after midnight. The Moon will be rising, and very close to it will be Jupiter, bright and orange and obvious for all to see. This makes a glorious and easy to photograph sight, if you really want to make a good picture use a little imagination. For example, stand somewhere so they appear framed by a gap in some buildings or trees, use your imagination. Not far away from Jupiter will be Saturn, not as bright and obvious as Jupiter, but still an obvious planet. I mentioned a few issues ago that Saturn goes through a cycle of opening and closing its rings as we see them from Earth. This autumn will be the last chance for a while to see the rings really well, this time next year they won't be so obvious or spectacular. Anyone who has the chance to see Saturn through a telescope should make the most of it, otherwise you'll have a while to wait before they open again. That's all from me this month, so make the most of the warm nights and go outside and wonder at our night sky. Please email me your smartphone astronomy pictures and any queries to vegabaja.astronomygroup@gmail.com

ou must be so careful with your documentation and paperwork in Spain. It has become far more complicated and involved, since the finalisation of Brexit. For example, it is now necessary to have the TIE or a Work Visa to be able to get employment in Spain. At present, there is no easy way. Firstly you will need a padron and I understand there have recently been a number of fraudulent padrons issued. So be very careful. Health cover is necessary with the complete documentation and certificate. It is no good selecting the cheapest health option – the authorities require a certificate to confirm health cover with your application and there are a limited number of companies whose policies are accepted and authorised by the police. Despite what others may advise or recommend, please ensure you use the correct company to do your application – both lawyers and gestors are experienced and there are a number of individuals who specialise in the process of applying for the TIEs/ residencia/ visas. This is where my company can be very helpful, as we do supply a fully recommended health insurance and my company works very closely with many authorised legal associates. Imagine finally reaching the stage where you present all your documentation, only to discover that your application is rejected because your documents do not meet all the legal requirements. The correct advice and help is essential to avoid this happening. Exactly the same situation applies when you are talking about investments and pensions held in the UK. Once again, it is necessary to be sure the company you are using has full authorisations and credentials for both Europe and Britain. This becomes more important with your applications for residencia and visas, as you are required to have an amount in the bank and proof of income as part of your application. However, if you purchase a property in excess of €500,000, you can apply for a Golden Visa and the process is slightly different. Please do not attempt to do any of this yourself or be persuaded by people who tell you it is not necessary to do anything. In both instances, this would be wrong and would have a detrimental effect on your dream to live in Spain. ● If you need assistance and any more information, please contact one of my offices, visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net or email info@jennifercunningham.net.

www.femalefocusonline.com I am now fully vaccinated, masks no longer need to be worn outside and we are getting back to some kind of 'normal', albeit that at the time of going to print the UK still has Spain on the Amber List. With the children breaking up from school for their summer break darling daughter is getting her list of activities ready to keep the grandchildren occupied for the almost 12 weeks until school restarts. I suspect that we will be seeing a lot more of them in the weeks to come - not complaining, just need to make sure my activities box and the baking cupboard are restocked. We sometimes forget just how lucky we are to live where we do. With the beach and the sea on our doorstep, lovely walks close by and an abundance of places to visit we really are very fortunate. It does not take much to keep their inquisitive minds occupied. It really has got a lot hotter so drink plenty, use sunscreen and enjoy the reasons we are all here in Spain. It seems everyone is delighted that summer has landed. Temperatures are rising, the sun is shining and the golden sandy beaches have your name written all over them. Am I the only weirdo who dreads this time of year? My Irish skin cries, my sleep pattern breaks, I struggle to eat a curry, mosquitoes reign the world and then there's that tiniest scariest item of clothing that looks for its annual airing; the Bikini! For me, the worst part about summer is how it obliterates my good walking habits. No more day long treks in the mountains, no more happily snatched promenade strolls on my office lunch break. The heat knocks me for six and with that, even a six kilometre walk seems beyond impossible. Maybe some of you can relate? There's a plague that infests our society and keeps us unhealthy. It is a disease of the mind and can fester for years having a seriously detrimental effect on both our psyche and our physical wellness. It has many variants and strains and is commonly known as The Excuses Pandemic! The symptoms that usually rear their heads in summer tend to sound like “It's too hot” and “It's too crowded” and “I'm too busy¨. You may be suffering from some of these symptoms? Don’t be alarmed. Caught early we can tackle all this before it becomes 5 kilos on the scales or a dangerous dent in your fitness! So, how can we beat this summer bug? How can we find a way to continue with our walking throughout those impossibly sweltering months of July and August? One word: ADAPT! Let’s tweak your approach so you can continue to Walk Your Way Well. Here's a few tips and remedies: · Pick a shadier or less exposed route i.e. find a forest · Take a cold shower before and after to lower body temperature · Drink a big glass of water before you go to hydrate · Walk on the beach with your feet in the waves · Join an indoor air-conditioned step class · Replace minerals lost through sweating with wholesome snacks · Wear lighter, looser clothing and always use sun cream · Bring plenty of water with you when you walk · Wear lighter breathable walking shoes or sandals · Go early in the day or go later in the evening · Use a treadmill or a free youtube “step” video indoors · Remember to slow down and try “little and often” · Wear a cap and sunglasses · Walk with a friend in case you do have heat related issues · Swim; That's basically walking under water! · Remember to ALWAYS avoid the midday heat I hope some of these ideas will encourage you to keep going even as the temperatures challenge us. Where there is a will there is a way and you deserve to find a way to continue being well and enjoying the beautiful outdoors we have been gifted with.
Keep in touch or let me know how you get on this summer. I'd love to hear from you. You'll find me on the Facebook page WALK YOUR WAY WELL. Please visit and throw me a thumbs up.

Is your UK bank closing?
Female Focus Magazine July 2021
One of the most common conversations we are having with individuals this year is concerning UK banks and how they are shutting their doors on account holders living overseas. Many of our clients have experienced this first-hand but it has also created new enquiries for us with people asking what they can do. The truth is, it will be exceedingly difficult (if not impossible) to open another bank account in the UK if the account holder no longer has an address in Britain. The simple solution could therefore be to instruct the UK bank to transfer all holdings over to another bank account in the individual’s name – most likely to an account here in Spain. The issue here though is that many people seem uncomfortable transferring large amounts over to Spanish banks. The reason behind this could be one of several, but more often than not we hear about fears of governments accessing deposits without warning, uncertainty about the strength of the Spanish banking system and poor interest rates (generic problem worldwide at present). For larger deposits, one must also bear in mind the compensation limits which exist in Europe. Under the current compensation scheme, deposits in banks are only protected up to 100.000€ in Europe, whereas the limit is set at £85,000 in the UK. Whilst some of these risks are minimal in our opinion, one which does stand out is the low interest rates which are tipped to remain subdued for the foreseeable future. So, what are the options for people who would prefer not to keep substantial levels of money in bank accounts? Well, aside from opening a currency exchange company account to bring money over as and when needed, another option might be to consider the use of a tax-efficient investment vehicle, known as a “Spanish Compliant Investment Bond”. This product provides individuals with an alternative solution for their money - an investment which can be as low risk or as high risk as the investor wishes. The flexible nature of these products allows the investor to simply hold cash (similar to a bank account) or to invest the money in a wide range of collective, fully regulated investment funds which have already been set up and approved under the product. Investing money will create potential for capital growth and could act as a useful way to keep pace with changes in inflation over time, but history has shown us that you do not need to take a lot of risk in order to achieve a small but consistent growth. What’s more is that this type of product is low cost, flexible and easily accessible. You would have access to 100% of your capital from day 1. If you would like to discuss this product in more detail or see if it is suitable for you, then please do not hesitate to contact us. We would be more than happy to help.

Sugaring
T
he sun is out and bits of our body are exposed that have not seen the light for a while… Stop! Do not reach for the razor - it may seem quick and easy in the shower but actually needs to be done very regularly. The dreaded itchy stubble appears and there are many other disadvantages to shaving including the risks of folliculitis or ingrowing hairs. Mimis Kru team are continuously updating their skills and techniques to give the best service options for our clients and Sugaring is another hair removal solution that we bring to you! Sugaring is an ancient Persian technique, it is edible and very natural to the skin which makes it a great product for all skin and hair types and is especially good for sensitive skin or problematic skin, i.e. psoriasis. Clients report that they find Sugaring is less uncomfortable and gentler than some other hair removal methods they have tried. It is great for most body areas but particularly good for facial hair and bikini waxing. It doesn’t stick to the skin like some methods can do and it is great for getting the fine fuzzy hairs that we often notice on our faces. The sugaring technique removes hair from the roots so, unlike shaving, leaves a cleaner finish and no stubble. With repeated treatments the hair grows less and becomes thinner. The Sugaring product is created with pure all natural ingredients: it is applied straight from the tub although some can be warmed up! Mimis Kru prefer to use a cold application of Sugaring; With the soft sugar wax, you apply in the OPPOSITE direction of hair growth, but pull quickly in the SAME direction of hair growth to remove. This is the exact opposite of how regular soft wax is applied. But is much more comfortable, the residue is easy to clean so no sticky patches and with no burning or tearing of the skin. 100% natural and organic - reduces ingrown hair bumps. Safe gentle and effective – safe and sanitary Good for all skin and hair types - goes where laser and other methods cannot! It is recommended to keep a regular appointment of every 4-5 weeks to receive the best result of Sugaring. Over long hair would need to be trimmed first! And hair with only 2 weeks growth just wouldn’t be long enough! So book your appointment now to enjoy a razor free summer. ● Local 12, Edificio Caribe, Av del Pla 129, Jávea. Make floral ice cubes and add zing to your summer drinks By Hannah Stephenson, PA
E
xpert Tanya Anderson offers a guide on how to freeze your favourite cut flowers into ice cubes, to add a garden twist to summer drinks. As summer garden party season gets underway, why not show off your home-grown flowers in the drinks you serve your guests? Ice cubes containing flowerheads or sprigs of herbs are a great addition to drinks, adding colour and flavour to all sorts of summer concoctions, from punches to cocktails and cordials, says expert Tanya Anderson, organic gardener and founder of Lovely Greens (lovelygreens.com). Her latest book, A Woman’s Garden: Grow Beautiful Plants And Make Useful Things, shows you how to make the most of your plants. She offers the following tips and tricks on making floral ice cubes and other ice creations using plants from your garden… Choose the right flowers for the job “Cut edible flowers when they are at their best and use the types which are compatible with your drink. Borage, for instance, is perfect for Pimm’s because its blue flowers have a refreshing cucumber flavour. “Borage blossoms and mild voilas are ideal for lemonade or gin and tonic,” she suggests. “You can pair lavender with a lavender floral syrup, and the same with rose petals. Cornflowers are also great. “Most edible flowers have a very subtle flavour which won’t impair the taste of your drink. People say cornflowers have a peppery flavour, but I have never found that in a drink.” Avoid pungent blooms “You may want to avoid edible flowers that taste garlicky or oniony, or have a flavour that’s going to make you sip your drink and think, ‘What’s that strange flavour?’” she notes. “You wouldn’t want to use chives, which have an onion flavour, or nasturtiums, which are peppery, unless you are making something like a bloody Mary.”
Use distilled water “You see a lot of misinformation online about boiling the water to make the ice crystal clear. That doesn’t work. It’s best to work with distilled water, which will give you the clearest ice cubes.” Stop flowers from floating to the top of the cube “A lot of people find the flowers float to the surface and don’t freeze inside the ice. The trick is to put a little bit of water into the ice cube mould, maybe half a centimetre, freeze that, take it out when it’s frozen. “Wet your flower on the end which is going on the bottom, press it down on to the ice and it will stick. Then fill the remainder of the mould to the top with distilled water and freeze it again. That way the flower should stay inside.” Invest in silicone moulds “Silicone ice cube moulds are really easy to use and you can get big cubeshaped ones, or circular types, which are really popular.” Colour your drink “Some edible flowers will tint your drink as the ice cube melts. For instance, if you put magenta flowers such as amaranth into ice cubes and your drink is a light colour, maybe Prosecco-based or gin-based, it will turn the entire glass pink, providing a real fun effect. Alternatively, hibiscus flowers infuse a deep red.” Make a floral ice bucket “People also make ice buckets out of ice with flowers embedded into the bucket. You’d need two plastic bowls, one that could fit into the other. Put a little water in the biggest bowl, freeze it and place the flowers on to the ice, then set the second bowl inside and fill the cavity between the two bowls with water and insert more flowers.” Go further with floral ice lollies “I’ve seen lovely recipes where ice lollies have flowers embedded inside. You could do the different layers different colours, depending on the effect you want. A Woman’s Garden: Grow Beautiful Plants And Make Useful Things by Tanya Anderson is published by Cool Springs Press. Available now.

Are you aware of the many benefits of having healthy teeth ORTHODONTIC treatment? and properly aligned jaws?
ith WHY BOTHER w
T
he first benefit is of course a beautiful smile which can have long-term benefits by improving self confidence in this ever more self aware society. Young children at school can be very sensitive to negative remarks made by others. This can badly affect their own self confidence in themselves during their growing up years. The top picture shows teeth that can easily be damaged because they protrude beyond the lips. The bottom picture shows ugly and difficult to clean teeth... Gingivitis, gum disease and bad breath is prevalent. Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain. This can result in tooth decay and gum disease and in some cases, ultimately leads to tooth loss. Gum disease and bad breath are associated with bacteria that may cause general health problems in later life. Having orthodontic treatment is a time when children can learn to care about their teeth, the importance of cleaning and diet and how it can affect their teeth. This will help them to have beautiful teeth for life, with probably little need for dental treatment in their future. Malocclusion (poorly lined up jaws) can contribute to abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, excessive stress of the gum tissues, inefficient chewing function, speech problems, snoring and sleep apnea. It also causes unfavourable facial profile and aesthetics, which deteriorate with age. Mouth breathing and snoring can lead to poor performance at school or difficulty concentrating due to poor quality sleep. Orthopaedic treatment with removable braces can enhance facial growth or correct poor growth patterns in the growing child, so that they more likely develop a most favourable aesthetic facial profile and beautiful smile to go with it. Orthodontic treatment not only corrects the problem at the source, but it can be less costly and much more pleasant than the dental care required to treat the problems resulting from the malocclusion. Another problem of crowded or crooked teeth is that they tend to get worse as you get older….. many people will have noticed that their once almost straight teeth have started to cross-over and crowd up. The only remedy is to line them up again and fit a retainer. It is never too late for ortho treatment to align the teeth, except for more severe jaw alignment which is mainly effective for a growing child. In conclusion, it is difficult to put a value on a great smile and healthy teeth that are easy to maintain since it is a lifelong benefit. Hemorrhoids
emorrhoids are more commonly known as piles and are caused when the veins in your anus and lower rectum swell. Approximately ¾ of the adult population suffer with haemorrhoids at some point in their life. There are two types of hemorrhoids, internal hemorrhoids which develop inside the rectum and, in most cases, do not cause any discomfort. Straining when passing stool can cause bleeding to occur. External hemorrhoids are found in the skin around the anus often causing the area to bleed or become swollen, itchy and if left untreated can be become extremely painful. There is always a solution as there are various minimally invasive procedures to treat and remove the hemorrhoids for example: Rubber band ligation: Bands are placed around the base of an internal haemorrhoid to cut off the circulation. Coagulation: This procedure is performed using a laser or infrared light or heat. It is predominantly used to treat internal haemorrhoids. Hemorrhoidectomy: This is the most effective and complete way to treat recurrent hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoid stapling: The blood flow to the affected tissue is blocked causing the hemorrhoid to diminish. If you suffer with prolonged bleeding or notice a change in colour or consistency of your stool, then it is very important to contact your GP as further tests may be needed.

Bhatura is a puffed Indian deep-fried bread. It is mildly fermented using natural yoghurt. Jalon Valley Help Event Planning in Full Swing
The further release from covid restrictions has enabled the Jalon Valley Help Events Team to put together the actual details of an events programme for this summer. Two of the forthcoming events for July are: Wednesday 7th July – OK Band performing at Los Arcos, Pedreguer starting at 19.00hrs. This is a BringYour-Own [BYO] food event with drinks to be purchased by waiter service from the bar, with tickets at 10€ each. Despite the latest relaxations, tables will be limited to 8 persons with safe social distancing to assure a safe feeling to what we expect to be another wonderful night of entertainment by the very popular band. Sunday 25th July – Night Market at the Rastro Car Park in Jalon, 19.00 – 22.00hrs. We all missed the May Fair so the Night Market will give us all a chance to bring our families and friends out, in the cooler evening time, to enjoy shopping at the stalls and watching the entertainment. Friday 27th August – The Entertainers performing a new batch of songs at Los Arcos, Pedreguer starting at 19.00hrs. This is another of the popular BYO picnic events. For more information about JVH and their events to raise money to support their endeavours on your behalf, please check their website www.jalonvalleyhelp.com.
U3A MARINA BAIXA GO WINE TASTING IN CASTILLA LA MANCHA On Friday 18 June 51 members left Albir to visit the Florentina Perez Bodega in the municipality of Casa de Juan Núñez (Albacete) in Castilla la Mancha. The group enjoyed an extensive tour including wine tasting and lunch. The afternoon was devoted to the La Mancha Experience following the canyon forged by the River Jucar over thousands of years to La Ribera de Cubas. The road, lined with cave houses built into the limestone, led to Jorquera, said to be the most historically relevant town in the Manchuela region. Not a large town but dominated by its Almohad fortification walls and the remains of its 12th century castle. A walk around the small town and a visit to the 14th century church in the Plaza de Virgen de Cubas was the last stop before the return journey. The scenery in this area was quite spectacular as a result of the land dropping from 1500m to 500m leaving towering cliffs of limestone that have weathered over the years to strange shapes and hollow caves, all in stark contrast to the vast cereal planes above the gorge. The group arrived back in Albir shortly after 9pm after an outstanding day trip organised by U3A Marina Baixa Travel Co-ordinators Margaret and Malcolm Hamer in liaison with LPD Travel. The next trip will be to Baños de Fortuna on Wednesday 7 July to enjoy the hot springs there. If you would like to know more about the Association why not attend one of their meetings at the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi at 11am on the forth Monday of the month. Membership is 10€ a year and further details can be found on their website www.u3amarinabaixa.com or their Facebook page.

Paying Too Much for Electricity?
Then it’s Time for Solar Advertising Feature by Mundo-Solutions With the electricity tariffs changing and adding confusion to what you pay, maybe it's time to consider investigating the greenest form of energy – solar. Did You Know: enough solar energy hits the earth in an hour to supply the world’s energy requirements for a year
It’s also good for the environment, allows you to go ‘off-grid’ and protects you from ‘black-outs’. As part of the transition to ‘renewables’, there’s little doubt it’s the future! Solar technology has improved vastly over the past 10 years with photovoltaics (solar panels to you and me) becoming not only cheaper, but significantly more efficient. It’s true to say there’s never been a better time to consider switching to solar. However (there’s always a ‘but’), in Spain, the regulatory framework can be complicated which is why you need to talk to Mundo-Solar who have ticked the 3 boxes required to (1) advise, (2) install and (3) do it with qualified and trained solar engineers. So, if you’re fed up with paying too much for electricity, call Mark at Mundo-Solar on 619 516 705 and take your first steps on the road to green!

IS YOUR HOME GUEST READY? There will be a lot of smiling faces this summer when hopefully our family, friends and guests are finally able to come and visit us. Providing comfortable areas will make their visit more enjoyable for everyone, you included! Yorkshire Linen has everything you need, from outside to inside, ALL UNDER ONE ROOF. Below are a few suggestions to get you started. Yorkshire Linen stocks Beryl mattresses at very competitive prices. One side of the mattress is made up of a thick HR (High Resiliency) foam core for optimal support and memory foam padding which provides warmth in winter and on the other side a layer of hypoallergenic fibres for breath-ability and freshness for those warm to hot summer nights. Perhaps your mattresses and sofa beds are comfortable enough but just to be sure a topper will make a hard bed a bit softer and a soft bed more supportive. Especially for those who have back problems and the body-moulding structure also means that a partner’s movements in a shared bed will not be affected as much. When it comes to bed linen that’s where you can really make a bedroom look welcoming. Pastel and brightly coloured designs with Back to Nature themes are in fashion this summer. Try and stick to a colour scheme as it’s hard to decorate when your palette is all over the place. Patterned or plain cushions and a throw laid out on the end of the bed will be the finishing touches to the bed. Create a magical world for the little ones! We have colourful designs and patterns that will make bedtime a lot more fun. (No guarantee of course but everything helps, right?) If you have a lot of guests, towels that are a different colour to your towels will help keep the washing to a minimum. We have many colours and sizes to choose from. For outdoors we have cushions, table cloths to protect furniture from the sun (and spillages) and beach/pool towels. Both our shops in Jávea and Altea are fully stocked with a wide choice of curtains (we also have an in-house seamstress service), blinds, pillows, bed protectors and more! Our knowledgeable staff are always happy to help you in any way they can. ● Come and get inspired! Indigenous Plants and Planning Regulations.
I thought that this could be quite an interesting subject as when many people build a new house, they often have to remove pine trees etc. The town halls are generally OK with you doing this, providing prior permission and knowledge of the action is granted, but what they also often want you to do is then replace the trees with indigenous trees. This is where the problems begin, because I, like many people before me, would automatically assume that many of the palm trees, olive trees, trees you see on the sides of the road etc, are all indigenous, so you would assume you are OK to put them in your garden, as a replacement. But you would be wrong. Now I do know something about plants in the sense of a palm tree, Phoenix Canariensis isn’t called this for fun, it originates from the Canary Islands hence its name. Olive trees go back thousands of years and were brought to Spain by the Moors from Syria or Lebanon, but these trees, shrubs and plants are so established here it is easy to assume that they are classed as indigenous. Each townhall may, and probably will, have differing lists of indigenous plants, but the simple fact is that if you work purely off indigenous plant list you will find yourself with a very short list indeed. It’s no surprise now I know what is truly classed as indigenous that so many species of plants have been brought into the area from similar regions across the world, because it’s not the climate that’s the problem it’s the fact that the truly indigenous plants are for want of a better word, a bit ugly and boring. So as much as I encourage using plants that are local and tolerant to the region, the simple fact is most of the plants that we may deem indigenous are not, and at the end of the day it is almost impossible to continued on next page plant a garden with plants that are.

So unless you want a garden full of pine trees and Pistacea Lentisa then you may have to pay the townhall the get out fee to use other species. When I design a garden we always work off what the customer wants, what style they want which varies person to person, but for the first time we have recently planted some Quercus Suber, Cork trees and they are really stunning, with a mix of Pomegranate (Punica Granatum), Cypress and then lavender, herbs and grasses, and are looking forward to having a stunning Mediterranean garden on our hands. All these plants are not truly indigenous, but they most certainly look it. All I can say is thank you to the Moors, the South Americans and anyone else who has brought a wonderful, colourful and textured pallet of plants to use, as without them things would be a bit drab. Freemasons help Project4All DARE TO ENTER THE LIONS' DEN?
In the Benidorm – Altea – Calpe – Moraira region, a group of volunteers are distributing hot meals to numerous homeless people, some of whom who are living under bridges or in empty houses. The initiative came from two homeless people who managed to change their lives for the better and who now want to contribute something back to society. As, from their own experience, they know where to find these homeless people, they are asking volunteers to cook for anywhere from sixty to eighty needy people at a time. Recently, food has been cooked by our Freemason friends from the Dutch/ Belgian Lodge of Leukopolis, who made sausage and mash with vegetables and gravy! A whopping eighty-three meals were made by the Masons, and all with a cake and a drink of course. The lovely Tanya, Natasha and Jon Smith took care of the Calpe – Benidorm route, handing out the much needed meals and other necessary items. Local Brethren of Leukopolis Lodge Nº85 have already volunteered to cook twice for them. It brings the Brethren of the Lodge together in providing a much needed service and to support a worthy charity, so please keep supporting us, by liking and sharing our Facebook pages, by becoming a member of our growing community or even better, become a much needed volunteer! The charity organisation can be contacted through their Facebook page, project4all. Alternatively, email sec@glpvalencia.com. Should you be interested in Freemasonry or might be interested in joining this excellent organisation please contact us by email prensa@glpvalencia.com.
Have you got your summer wardrobe ready yet? We might have just the items you need! Pop down to the Lions' Den in Moraira. We are a charity shop with a difference! We pride ourselves on stocking only high quality second hand items. We have clothes, accessories, bric a brac, books - plenty to tempt you!
The Lions' Den – is open again. It can be found a couple of doors away from Letters R Us beneath the Pepe La Sal supermarket on the Centro Comercial, Moraira, just past the fountain roundabout on Ctra Moraira-Teulada. All the profits from the shop go towards the charity projects which Lions support. Donations to Social Services for food vouchers, the tent for Civil Protecion, helping the Alzheimer’s charity AFA to extend their coverage and many more - all these worthy causes have been helped in part thanks to the money generated by the Den. All staff are volunteers. They do an incredible job and they enjoy it! Perhaps you have some time on your hands? Come and volunteer with us - you’ll be helping those in need and meeting new people. We have follow all Covid rules but with more and more people being vaccinated - it has never been a better time to step forward. WAITING IN THE WINGS?
Female Focus Magazine July 2021
By Benny Davis
anging around backstage, took on a completely different meaning, when the ACTS Theatre Company were performing, `The Play That Goes Wrong´
A complex set involved actors exiting an upper structure, backwards, down a ladder, and just to make things even more hazardous, completely in the dark. Needless to say, an accident was just waiting to happen – and it did. One poor board treader completely missed his footing and was left silently, hanging in space by the tips of his fingers until the end of the scene. Only then did the stagehands manage to lower him down to safety. Just one of the many hazards this intrepid group has had to undergo since their baptism in 2015. From that initial year, ACTS, based in Benijófar, have left no stone unturned in their quest to present the most professional productions within their ability, from research to the final curtain. Take for example their stage version of the hit movie, `Calendar Girls´. The director not only visited the Yorkshire Dales village of Kettlewell, where the movie was filmed, but managed to persuade the originator of the story, Tricia Stewart, to jump on a flight to Spain for the sole purpose of helping to promote the production. This proved to be so successful, a matinee performance was added at the last minute. Incidentally, Tricia’s part in the film was played by Helen Mirren. Former successes include a variety of productions from farce to romantic comedy, but you can’t expect six years living with the ghost of live theatre to give up without a fightback. Many other gremlins joined forces to try and disrupt this dedicated group of amdram thespians whilst performing, including an occasion when a lead actor dried up, leaving his panic-stricken fellow actors frantically trying to ad-lib as if all was normal. Completely unruffled, the said actor walked to the wings, paused nonchalantly, grabbed a stiff drink, then whispered to the prompt, “What’s my next line?” Like all groups, Covid restrictions have hit them pretty badly. As a result, only two get-togethers, in the form of glorified read-throughs of the `Vagina Monologues´ have been possible since the outbreak. But the latest news is that ACTS are back in action and anticipate live performances being staged from November. Good news for local charities who have benefited from receiving thousands of euros in donations raised by this group of talented and kind-hearted members.

Local Masons donate to cancer charity MABS.

The International Club, in El Campello, held a Charity Fun Day on Saturday 22 May and Santa Faz Lodge No 48 took the opportunity to man a table, containing a display of aprons and jewels (courtesy of W Bro Bob Alchin), and answer any questions visitors had about Freemasonry. Of particular interest was a Royal Masonic Hospital Nurse’s silver belt buckle owned by the Club’s Secretary, Kim, who did her training there. During the afternoon, a sponsored back wax, was administered by a local beautician, Carmen, to the Worshipful Master, W Bro Greg Hustler, which raised 157€. Most of this was donated by those Brethren who were present, to ensure the reserve was reached and the event went ahead! Later, the Lodge presented a cheque for 1250€ to Irena, the MABS area representative. The WM stated that the MABS Cancer Support Fundación’s commitment in Spain could be summed up in this short sentence: “To care, comfort and counsel people affected by cancer.” Something that has affected many of us. It is a worthy charity well deserving of our support.

COSTA BLANCA ANGLICAN CHAPLAINCY
Our 50th Anniversary
Pentecost Sunday was a very special event for our Churches. Not only celebrating the great Feast of Pentecost, but also celebrating 50 years since we were formally recognised as a Chaplaincy. 50 years ago Fr Cyril Mudford was Licensed as honorary Chaplain, and services were originally held at his house, then at the Ermita del Popul in Jesus Pobre, and we still worship there. That was our first Spiritual Home in the Costa Blanca. Now led by the lovely Father Marcus, together with his wonderful team, we hold regular weekly services at Albir, Alfas del Pi, Calpe, Denia, El Campello, Gandia, Jávea and La Fustera. Whether you are already a resident or a second home owner, a holiday-maker or are about to move to the Costa Blanca, we will be delighted to welcome you at any of our eight churches. Whilst we are an Anglican chaplaincy, rooted in the tradition of the Church of England, there are many who worship with us, regularly or occasionally, who have come from different traditions. All are welcome. For locations and service times, go to our webpage and visit the “Churches and Services” page and click on your chosen church – http://costablanca-anglicanchaplaincy.org. THE AIRCREW ASSOCIATION COSTA BLANCA (BELATEDLY) THE 100TH BIRTHDAY OF HENRY HORTH
CELEBRATES
Henry Horth, achieved his century on 26 January this year! Due to the Covid 19 restrictions, the celebrations planned for that day had to be postponed until the ‘Covid situation’ improved! Improved it did and on Wednesday, 19 May, The Aircrew Association members, Henry’s daughter Ann (who had deservedly been allowed to come to Spain to temporarily care for Henry) and friends, held a celebratory lunch at La Bodeguilla Restaurant in Jávea Port to acknowledge the birthday, albeit belatedly, of Henry. During the lunch, the Association Chairman, Max Maxwell, was delighted to formally welcome back, one of Henry’s oldest friends and a former member of the association, Eric Davies, who, with his wife Freda, were re-joining the association membership.
THE AIRCREW ASSOCIATION COSTA BLANCA BIDS FAREWELL TO ITS PRESIDENT AND SALUTES ITS SENIOR MEMBER ON THE AWARD OF HIS LEGION D’HONNEUR The Aircrew Association held a unique, four element, function on the 16th June at La Cumbre restaurant, Benitachel. The occasion included: the Presentation of the award of Chevalier de L’Ordre National De La legion D’Honneur to John Russell, the Association’s most ‘mature’ Member; the farewell to its President of five years, Henry Horth; the ‘entertaining’ of the Association’s Ladies; the appointment of the new President, Tom Brown. John Russell was presented with his award on the terrace of La Cumbre by the Assistant Defence Attaché from the French Embassy in Madrid, Captain Xavier De Cervoisier. Later, during the lunch and following the ‘Dedication to the Comradeship of Aircrew’ from Father Marcus, Peter Langley, Vice LifePresident of the Association proposed the toast ‘To The Ladies’, Max Maxwell bade farewell to the departing President, Henry Horth and proposed the toast to ‘Our President Henry’. Following this toast, the formal handover of the President’s Badge of Office took place and Tom Brown assumed the appointment as President from Henry Horth! This was a special occasion including a mixture of joy, at the Presentation of John Russell’s Legion D’Honneur and sadness at the departure of Henry Horth. Another memorable day in the diary of the Aircrew Association Costa Blanca! Top right photo by Jan Adams shows the principal participants during the Presentation Ceremony: (left to right) Captain Xavier De Crevoisier (Attache staff), Max Maxwell (Chairman), Henry Horth (President), Sqn Ldr David Tucker RAF, John Russell (Chevalier De L'Ordre National De Legion D'Honneur), Wg Cdr Phelpsy Phelps RAF.
