Ask Kylie – What is your new range of glasses like? To mark the launch of Kylie’s new range of glasses at Specsavers Opticas, we asked her some questions about her new range. Q. How’s it been designing this collection? A. I’ve absolutely loved designing this collection. Glasses are a big part of my life, day in, day out. I really tried to inject my personality into it – for me that means functional daytime - but-still-fabulous glasses, which can transition to a dinner date or an evening show. Q. What are the key themes for the collection? A. I built the collection upon three key themes: modern classics, subtle bling and reinvented vintage. Modern classics is just as it sounds – if it ain’t broke don’t fix it! There are classic shapes like round-eyes that work for most people, so we took those and put my twist on them. Subtle bling is another part of the collection – I think the crystals worked really well in the first collection because there’s just that surprise element. I think I will probably always have a bit of sparkle in my life somewhere – thank goodness I have a job where I can indulge myself in that a lot. I’ve kept it subtle and wearable, so that it’s not overpowering. Reinvented vintage is something close to my heart because I have loved vintage since I was a child. I have always been and always will be influenced by classic designers and Hollywood icons, who wore styles that are still so relevant.’ Q. Who is the collection for? A. I honestly hope that this new collection appeals to everybody. I don’t know what the fashion rules are – I hate rules, so maybe there are none. I hope that there is a little bit of everything in my collection so that people can choose exactly what they like. These new styles are now available exclusively at Specsavers Opticas. Last month darling daughter and I took our little princess to see the Careline Theatre Performing Arts and Dance Academy's production of The Lion King in Alcalali. We had no idea what to expect, especially with a three year old who has never managed to sit through a whole film, let alone a full production. All three generations agreed that it was FANTASTIC. The costumes, the cast, the make-up, choreography, direction..... I could go on and on. Little princess did not move, she was transfixed and loved every minute of it! In fact so much, that when it had finished she said she wanted to see it again immediately. I think she thought it was like a DVD, you could just repeat at will! There was a rumour that it may be repeated later in the year and I really hope it is as we will be first in line at the box office. Well done to all involved. Little princess would now like to see Beauty and The Beast please - just saying! We are so lucky to have such a range of groups along the coast bringing quality productions for all ages and genres, check out Benny Davis' Stage Diary on page 38 to find out more.

We Provide Insurance – and Nothing Else By Elaine at Insurance Altea At Insuarance Altea, we’ve seen what we believe to be a concerning trend whereby banks are not only selling insurance, but insisting upon it in order that you can use their services. We’re not against competition, in fact we welcome it. We believe that customers have a right to freely choose where they buy their insurance, and their decision should be based on merit, and not be ‘forced’ into any given policy - which is of questionable legality anyway (don’t take our word for it, ask your lawyer)! We’ve actually been established for many years in Altea and are proud of our reputation for saving people money whilst at the same time providing that all important personal contact when a claim is being made. It can be stressful if your car gets knocked, or you suffer a break-in. We’re here to make sure that getting your insurance claim through doesn’t add to the stress. When it comes to pricing, well we’re very competitive. Just recently, we quoted like for like for a car insurance policy. The customer had been with the same company for 5 years and was quoted 465€. We quoted 286€ this saving nearly 200€ - for the same policy cover! Our offices are on the N332 (Calle Conde de Altea Nº 65) just before you leave Altea heading towards Calpe. If you’re worried about your policy, or simply want to save money whilst getting a better service, come and see us! Call 96 584 0753 or visit www.insurancealtea.es.

Brexit, pensions and tax returns: get advice and save money
www.femalefocusonline.com
by Steve Iball, Area Manager deVere Spain
The countdown to BREXIT continues, we are nearly there and just awaiting the final confirmation. The good news for expats is that Spain is continuing healthcare for residents, and inflation increases on UK pensions will continue. The bad news however, which was to be expected, is that the UK HMRC is to apply additional tax deductions of 25% on pension transfers from the UK to overseas in QROPS. As you know this already applies to countries outside the EEC. So if you have a UK private or company you need to fully understand what pensions you have, their value and your options. deVere specialises in handling advice on pensions for internationals and will provide advice at no cost to the individual. Yes, we do get paid from the trust companies if the client proceeds and we are very happy to provide any information on this to our clients. Take action today and contact me to discuss your pension situation with no obligation. Spanish annual tax return. This is the month when annual Spanish tax returns need to be submitted. If your investment tax is ‘paining’ you then it’s time to consider the Spanish complaint vehicles to reduce your overall taxation. Again, take action and contact me for an initial investment check, again at no cost. We just might be able to save you money for your 2018 tax and beyond. Finally, have you checked out our two apps on your smartphone. The first one is called Vault and it’s the ability to transfer monies on the debit card payment card within 23 currencies including pound sterling and euros. It’s backed by MasterCard and you can use it just like any normal credit card. Secondly, we have started our own crypto currency. Love or hate it there’s a good chance it’s going to become the new money. Our app allows you to take a look at it and start educating yourself. Both apps are totally free to download and are already in use by many of our clients worldwide. For more information, contact me on 610 822 484 or email steve.iball@devere-spain.es.

3 steps your lawyer should always go through when buying property in Spain • Is the property you're buying fully legal? • Perhaps you're worried about paying a heavy amount of tax? • Who will take care of essential check ups such as water and electricity services? The above and more should be explained and looked after by the lawyer who assists you in Spain with the purchase of your property. Ideally, three steps must be covered. 1. Pre-purchase There are two kinds of properties you can buy in Spain: • New build • Resale Our recommendation is that you find a reputable real state agent that can give you advice not only on the property itself, but on other important aspects such as: health centres and hospitals nearby, schools if you have children, leisure centres, as well as safety and security. For any of the two possibilities, your lawyer can perform the following basic actions: • Power of attorney (PoA): the document signed by you that gives power to your lawyer to act on your behalf in Spain. • NIE Number: it is impossible to buy property without a Spanish NIE number (‘Número de Identificación de Extranjero’, Identification Number for Foreigners, in English). • Bank account: you will need a Spanish bank account to carry out the purchase, pay tax, utilities, and mortgages.

The purchasing process ends when the public deed of purchase is signed by both the buyer and the seller before the public notary. How does your insurance company value your car after a total loss? God forbid this should happen to you but if your vehicle is treated as a total loss (also known as a ‘write-off’) it is because the cost for the repair is higher than 75% of the actual cash value of the vehicle or it has sustained so much damage making it unsafe and not roadworthy. We really hope you won’t ever be involved in this situation, but it is best to be aware of some important aspects and to be really clued up. For example, Liberty Seguros recommends contracting third-party with theft, fire and total loss, because in cases where the client has third-party coverage only and it is their fault, you will have no right to compensation. However, in the event that the loss is due to the fault of another person, you would be entitled to compensation for total loss, even if you have only contracted third party cover. Most insurance companies compensate the total loss with the sale value of the vehicle but bear in mind that after three years of your car’s life, depending on the car, it may have depreciated by up to 50% or more, so your compensation won’t be that good! On the other hand, choosing the right insurer can make a big difference. In the case of Liberty Seguros, within the first two years after buying your new vehicle, you will be compensated with the value of your car as if it was new. And from that point on: · If the vehicle is up to three years old: you will be compensated with 80% of the value of your car when it was new. · If the vehicle is up to four years old: you will be compensated with 70% of the value of your car when it was new. · If the vehicle is more than four years old: you will be compensated with the Cash Value, plus 30%. What’s more, in case of total loss, Liberty Seguros does not deduct any type of excess. Although no one wants to lose their car due to an accident, it’s always better to think about what different insurance companies can offer you, especially if you have just bought a new car! Just think, you will feel more content knowing that your car will still be worth the price you paid for it for up to two years after you bought it. Apart from all these advantages, Liberty Seguros has an extensive network of over 300 brokers and agents that are dedicated to providing unbiased, friendly and expert advice. Speaking your own language too, these brokers are available to discuss your needs, face-to-face, which is the best cover to suit you. With insurance, not only for car and home, but also life, pet, business, commercial, leisure, public liability and personal injury, today Liberty Seguros is considered by far, the expat’s number one choice in Spain. “I just couldn’t understand why their financial advisor had recommended that fund!” by Sam Kelly, Managing Partner – Chorus Financial
A gentleman, we’ll call him Mr Smith to protect his privacy, had a feeling all was not well with his portfolio. Around 18 months ago, Mr Smith’s advisor here in Spain had recommended he sell all the funds in his portfolio and buy a fantastic ‘exclusive’ fund his financial advisory’s company now had access to. 18 months later and despite strong markets, Mr Smith had barely seen any growth in his portfolio. So, what had happened? Well, one of two things. Firstly, Mr Smith had been tied into an investment bond that was apparently costing him 1.25% for the lifetime of his plan. This is an unusually high fee to pay for such a product. Secondly, after several weeks of emails and research, I finally found out some information about this ‘exclusive’ fund. The fund was fairly new, so very little track-record to justify a recommendation, and also cost the client an eye-watering 2.8% per annum – information that had not been disclosed to Mr Smith at any point during
the recommendation. In addition to the 2 fees we now knew about, there were other associated fees within his overall advice that took his total fees way above 5%. I wish I could say this was unusual, but sadly in Spain this lack of transparency, and over-charging, is fairly prolific. How on Earth is a client expected to make returns with charges this high? Of course, as you’ll probably guess, the vast majority of these undisclosed fees were actually going to the financial advisor as a ‘kick back’ for the recommendation – not exactly what you would call independent financial advice… I explained to Mr Smith that Chorus clients benefit from truly independent advice, and that when we choose funds for our clients we promise to never receive any fee from the fund provider. This means that our choice is based purely on the very best, most appropriate funds for our clients. We research thousands of funds available worldwide, rather than one or two ‘in-house’ options that offer incentives to financial advisors. The reality of truly independent advice is that it saves our clients a vast amount in fees, and every percentage you save in fees, is another percentage you’ll see in your portfolio each year. If you are currently considering an investment, including a pension transfer or Spanish bond, or would like a second opinion on an existing investment or pension, please call me on 664 398 702 or email s.kelly@chorusfinancial.es.

Journalist and broadcaster Jack Troughton plays ‘Johnny Foreigner’ and casts an eye over Spain and focuses on stories that serve as a gentle reminder he remains an Englishman abroad.
VALENCIA is the latest Spanish city to join the increasingly bitter battle against the rise and rise of holiday rentals in key tourist destinations where the locals find themselves priced out of the market and unable to afford a place to rest their heads. The natives are increasingly not friendly over the economic pressures; there is no place to call ‘home’ as landlords look to cash in on the easy bucks available by offering rentals to visitors. Locals say they are unable to afford to live in their own neighbourhoods - and also those that remain in the mean streets complain they are subjected to a bombardment of noise and disturbances from visitors.

And when people get hot under the collar in Spain they take to those same streets and demonstrate to make their feelings known... and along the Mediterranean coast there appear to be an increasing series of ‘light bulb’ moments as politicians get the general idea and look to address the problem.
Naturally, it needs a balancing act rather than a wave of a magic wand; tourism is after all just a tiny bit important to the economy but town and city halls like a challenge and this one is filed under ‘regulation’, with the tried and tested formula of enacting a bylaw or two thrown in. It does mean taking on the new world giant called technology; it is a market driven by private rentals of property, even if it is just a room with a view in a family home – talk too much about a black economy in Spain these days and it is kind of a red rag to a bull (and everyone knows how unpopular blood sports are!). Barcelona first felt the pinch as it was targeted by a tsunami of online listings. City hall acted and apparently shut down more than 1,000 apartments and whacked Airbnb and Homeaway across the knuckles with €600,000 fines; apparently Catalonia has collected more than €4 million since 2012. In Madrid, property owners are given the right to collectively decide right and wrong through community meetings; the local authority want owners of holiday rentals to be made to register for a special licence if a property is let for more than 90 days a year. In Andalusia owners must register property on a rental database; Mallorca’s Palma has gone for a total ban while other regional governments are looking to stay in charge of a growing trend.

My name is Steve Woods and I am a solicitor specialising in claims for asbestos related diseases and I thought I would look at a number of questions that often arise and that make people worried about the possibility of making a claim. My message is, if in doubt ask! I CANNOT REMEMBER WHERE I WORKED, OR THE COMPANY I WORKED FOR NO LONGER EXISTS. It is not unusual for companies that traded in the 1960s, for example, to have long since stopped trading. With investigations I can trace insurers who provided cover for these companies and they are obliged to deal with the claims. Even if you are hazy about the exact name of a company or your period of employment with them, I can obtain your work history from HM Revenue & Customs and this provides confirmation of who you worked for all those years ago. I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH AN ASBESTOS CONDITION BUT I DID NOT WORK WITH ASBESTOS. I always like to meet my clients and it is surprising how often, when you start talking about a person's work history, what they remember. Often, it turns out that even if a person did not actually work with asbestos, they worked alongside people who did and therefore came into contact with dust. Another possibility, and a particularly sad one in my experience, is a wife who comes into contact with asbestos from her husband’s work clothes. A RELATIVE HAS DIED FROM AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION BEFORE MAKING A CLAIM. It is not widely known that claims can be made even though the person affected has died (provided the claim is made within 3 years of death). The claim is made on behalf of the person's estate. DIAGNOSING AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION. There are a number of conditions that can be caused by exposure to asbestos, including lung cancer. The main issue is whether the breathing difficulties can be attributed to asbestos. This is the point we have to prove in all respiratory disease cases, not just asbestos related but also, for example, silicosis – medical evidence is required to prove a link. Claims for breathing problems caused by exposure to asbestos can be complex but the quicker the claim is started the quicker these issues can be dealt with. So, if you are concerned about your particular situation or have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch. I am happy to talk to you free of charge. Female Focus June 2018

What are your vertebrae telling you? By Ben Tinker: Vida Plena After people start chiropractic care in my office they often ask me about other problems, apart from the normal neck pain and back pain, that chiropractic can help. It is very common when I am just touching someone's spine and asking a few questions that they say "how did you know that I have that?" or "why do you ask?" or "recently I have been really bad with that!" Some experts say that you can almost read a person's health by analysing the spine. Hippocrates said "look well to the spine for the cause of disease". Hippocrates is very important in medicine - you may have heard of the Hippocratic oath - all medical doctors have to say his oath before starting medical practice. So what is it that I am talking about? Well between each vertebra lies a pair of spinal nerves. These nerves branch out and divide and sub-divide until they reach every single cell in the body. This allows the brain, the master control centre of the body, to be in constant contact and control of every function of the cells, tissues, glands and organs. As you can see from the picture there are different areas of the spine that control different organs. This is also true of the parts of the skin (which people either feel tingling or pain) and the musculoskeletal system (bones and muscles). And this is why a simple spine examination can be of value, far beyond the easing of obvious pain. Free Spine Examination At Vida Plena, we offer a Free initial spine examination to readers of Female Focus to see if you have any of the spinal bones misaligned which could be changing the function of your body. So if you’re suffering from any back pain, pop into our clinic in Calpe and we can give you an initial appraisal and together chart a course to recovery. It’s best to make an appointment. Nothing To Lose And Your Hearing To Gain Chris Elcocks RHAD, MSHAA has been a qualified hearing aid audiologist for nearly 25 years and has helped over 2000 people, who have benefited from his professional service and guidance. Chris covers the whole of the Costa Blanca at various clinics and private appointments at home. Following is an interview of one of his patients, Mr Eddie Arliss from La Canalosa, near Elche. Q. What was your reason for contacting Premier Hearing Services? A. I have suffered from hearing loss for many years and found it difficult to follow a conversation, especially in background noise. My wife was constantly having to repeat things and I kept saying she was mumbling. The television was up louder than she liked it, so I decided to have it checked out. Q. What was involved in the test? A. Chris explained to me that he was going to carry out a thorough examination, firstly by checking the ears for wax or other possible reasons, then perform an audiometric test by presenting different tones to the ears at different levels and then measuring their response. Other tests were also performed in order to obtain a full diagnostic result. Once completed Chris explained the results and we concluded that aids were required. He then did a demonstration to show the benefits using the latest technology and I couldn’t believe the difference, everything was much clearer, much to my wife’s pleasure. Q. What was involved in obtaining a hearing system? A. Chris showed me the different styles and explained the different levels of technology available, even the ones that can be rechargeable, which is great as I don’t have to worry about changing batteries every week. Q. Was there any further treatment involved? A. He advised me that it can take between 2 and 4 weeks to fully acclimatise to the system whilst your ears and brain get used to them. He has been very attentive if ever I have needed him, which gives me peace of mind. Q. How have the aids affected your life? A. I can now hear my wife a lot better and can go into those more difficult situations like a café with more confidence, knowing I will be able to hear more of what I want to hear. It’s the old cliché I should have done it sooner. Q. How long will they last? A. The good thing is these can be adjusted as my hearing changes and Chris will perform regular checks to keep an eye on things. If you have a concern or question about your hearing, then contact Chris on 659 644 106 or email him at chris.premierhearing@outlook.com. He has a website www.premierhearingaids.es and a Facebook page also. You have nothing to lose and your hearing to gain! Female Focus June 2018

Cranial Osteopathy Treatment explained by Heidi Tryland
Heard of cranial osteopathy but have no idea what it is? Originating with the diagnosis and treatment of the bones and soft tissues of the head, the name ‘Cranial osteopathy’ (Cranium is an anatomical term for the head) is actually a little misleading because the diagnosis & treatment is in fact applied to all tissues covering all areas of the body, not just the head. As osteopaths we are using our sense of touch to feel for tension in the body. Osteopaths are feeling for a rhythmic pulsation or a change in the tissues that are under abnormal tension and using very gentle pressure, releasing these tensions. It can be strange at first, as it can seem like the osteopath is doing nothing! However the body responds to very small focused forces as well as large ones. It is therefore, a very gentle, minimal approach that can have powerful results. It is often the treatment of choice for acute pain (back ache, joint sprains, car accidents), for headaches/ migraines in adults or children, for dizziness/ vertigo, for stress relief, anxiety or sleeping problems, for babies (after a traumatic birth, for colic etc), for young children (glue ear, sleep problems etc), for pregnant women, the elderly and those who do not like the idea of joints being ‘clicked’ or ‘cracked’. The patient can feel a sense of tranquility with this treatment and it is not unusual for patients to sleep. Yes, you did read that correctly, many patients fall asleep on my treatment bench because the treatment process enables a state of health and balance to be restored, which can be deeply relaxing. Heidi Tryland. UK Qualified Osteopath working in Denia. Clinic address: Calle Marques de Campo No 60, 2nd Floor, Door 15, Doorbell Number 315. Telephone (0034) 625 709 515. Never sleep with makeup on no matter however tired you are, it is important that you remove makeup as it can clog your pores leading to inflammation, pimples and age your skin. 2. Apply sun screen before you get dressed - a shot glass size for your body and an extra teaspoon for your face, applying before you dress will avoid you missing any parts. 5. A full body exfoliation each season helps remove dead skin cells and helps regeneration of the skin surface. 6. Teeth Whitening Why whiten? For just one moment, smile. Then think about it. That all-important grin is how you greet the world and your loved ones every day. Of course, it's also a big part of the first impressions you make. Studies prove that people with whiter teeth appear more confident, are more likely to be hired for jobs, and even enjoy better dates. It is also true that if you are proud of your smile then you are likely to take more care over cleaning your teeth to maintain them that way. A high standard of oral hygiene creates the healthiest and most beautiful mouths. So whitening isn't just about caring for your teeth. It's about feeling your best and living life accordingly. Whitening your teeth does not mean that they will go neon white – although it is true that young teeth have more ability to go very white as their enamel is thicker than middle aged teeth. Indeed, the degree of whiteness can be directly controlled by you. Some degree of sensitivity during, or just after whitening treatment, is normal and is temporary, usually settling after one or two days. This sensitivity usually means that you just take a break during the treatment before continuing. When you see people on TV with extremely white teeth, actors for example, it is less attractive, but that level of whiteness is usually created with porcelain veneers or crowns, and cannot usually be caused by whitening alone. These overdone teeth don’t look natural, we agree, and most people just want their own natural teeth improved upon, which is what whitening can do for you. We recommend home whitening as provided by dentists, although we can also offer power-whitening carried out in our clinic using strong beaching peroxides for those who don't want the bother of doing home treatments. Drink something hot to cool down Conventional wisdom may tell you that if you are hot, drinking something cold will cool down your body. However, research has shown that on a hot day, drinking a hot beverage may help your body stay cool. The reason being that when you drink a hot drink, your body produces sweat to cool down your body temperature. Initially you may be adding heat by drinking the hot liquid, but the amount of sweat that your body produces to cool down more than makes up for the added heat from the liquid. The increased perspiration is key; when the sweat evaporates from your skin, it is able to cool down your body temperature. Female Focus June 2018

It can be easy to underestimate the strength of the sun when you're outside As well as being an International Master in Cosmetic Surgery, Dr Poole is also a GP, and every year he treats a number of sunburn cases. And June is often the hottest month here in Spain, so please take care. It’s hot out there! Sunburn is skin damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays. Everyone who's exposed to UV light is at risk of getting sunburn, but some people are more vulnerable than others. The skin becomes red, warm, sore and tender. It may start to flake and peel after a few days, and will usually fully heal within 7 days. Sunburn is usually mild and short-lived, but it's important to try to avoid it because it can increase your risk of developing skin problems in later life, such as ageing (wrinkling) and skin cancer. Always be aware of the risk of sunburn if you're outside in strong sunshine, and look out for your skin getting hot. The wind and getting wet, such as going in and out of the sea, may cool your skin, so you don't realise you're getting burnt. If you or your child has sunburn, you should get out of the sun as soon as possible – head indoors or into a shady area. You can usually treat mild sunburn at home, although there are some circumstances where you should get medical advice. To help relieve your symptoms until your skin heals: Cool your skin by having a cold bath or shower, sponging it with cold water, or holding a cold flannel to it. Use lotions containing aloe vera to soothe and moisturise your skin. Drink plenty of fluids to cool you down and prevent dehydration. Take painkillers, such as ibuprofen or paracetamol, to relieve pain (but don't give aspirin to children under 16). Try to avoid all sunlight, including through windows, by covering up the affected areas of skin until it's fully healed. Seek medical advice if you feel unwell or you're concerned about your sunburn, particularly if you're burnt over a large area or have blistering or swelling of the skin. Or if you have the sunburn symptoms of chills, a high temperature (fever) of 38ºC (100.4ºF) or above, or have dizziness, headaches or are feeling sick (these are symptoms of heat exhaustion). And in particular, you should seek medical advice if a young child or baby has sunburn, as their skin is particularly sensitive. Clinica El Arenal. Avenida Arenal 2, Jávea. Hate those flabby parts! The warm weather is under way and you've got the summer wardrobe out. The only thing is, a winter of comfort food has left those arms and tummy flabby and you are feeling more than just a little self-conscious. The good news is that if it isn't shifting with a diet, you don't have to get depressed, we can freeze away the stubborn fat in 3 weeks, and tense up the flabby skin with HifU so that in 1 months’ time you'll be wanting to show off that strappy dress or even that bikini. Quick Recap: Medical Coolbodysculpting freezes stubborn fat (which doesn't shift through dieting) to between -8 and -13 degrees, which causes the fat cells to die off and be eliminated in the urine over the next 3 weeks. Visible loss in cms occurs and continues for up to 3 months. Body HiFU uses high intensity focused ultrasound which heats the fat at 11mm beneath the skin to 70 degrees effectively breaking down superficial cellulite which is eliminated in the urine over the next 3 weeks up to 3months. We also use the 3mm, 1,5mm and 4mm Hifu machine in the same session which tenses the skin by producing collagen which gets rid of the crepey sagging skin on the tummy, the arms, inside legs and even your knees! So don't let those flabby bits get you down. Come and see us at Zen Smile Spa where we have all the equipment available to help you banish them with no pain, no downtime, and no surgery. Goalkeeping runs in the family In April’s issue of Female Focus we were introduced to Francisco Rosales as part of the Club Fit series of articles featuring real people and why they choose Club Fit. Well we spent such an interesting time with Francisco we wanted to tell you a bit more about this dynamic young player. Francisco is still actively playing professional football as a goalkeeper for local side Pego as well as coaching, this means he has to take an all-inclusive approach to his training. This enables him to be a football player first, and a coach second all while maintaining a well-rounded training regime. Goalkeeping runs in the Rosales family and pictured here is Francisco’s own father goalkeeping on Sotogrande beach. Although his father was very talented he never made it to professional football but instilled in his son the importance of a holistic approach to training, fitness and sport encompassing mind, body and soul. And these are the very ethics/ methods/ qualities that brought Francisco to train at Club Fit in Jávea. In his words he says “In favour of Club Fit I can say that my training objective is not only to improve my football skills but also the personal and professional, because in the end people who are proactive in society wish to express themselves and be as happy inside as they are outside.” This is Francisco's way of expressing himself as a passionate goalkeeper and professional coach who has found the tools he needs and a perfect synergy between the professionalism of the Club Fit staff and their magnificent material and facilities!

A View From The South
Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the South”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up.
Off on my travels. Those of you who are familiar with my musings will be aware that at heart I am a home bird and, that although born in England I am more than happy and comfortable in Spain. That being said however, when an opportunity to travel and visit arises, I do on occasion relish that opportunity ...so when my eldest son messaged with the opportunity to not only visit the grandchildren, but to also visit my beloved Stamford Bridge ...the home of Chelsea F.C. then it was a no brainer. Tickets booked... off I set on my latest adventure. The first leg of my trip was the flight from Alicante to Manchester. A late night flight via Jet 2 arriving in Manchester at 11.30 pm. Now I am aware that flying is not everyone's cup of tea and for some people flying at night is even more of a traumatic event ...but on a warmish still night, flying into a calm still Manchester was quite enjoyable. Of course what was more enjoyable was to be greeted at the airport by both grandkids ...one holding a self made banner saying "welcome Grandad" while the other slept peacefully in his father’s arms. “He wanted to come Dad”, says my son, “but he fell asleep in the car on the way here”. The following few days were a whirl of shopping ...playing in the local park and generally enjoying the company of close family. On day five of my visit four of us ...grandad, dad and the two ‘herberts’ set off via train for London. The 12.35 Manchester Piccadilly to London - Euston took just over two hours and due to pre-booking was surprisingly cheap. Train journeys are a nice way to travel. Sandwiches and drinks were enjoyed, as was the dot to dot colouring book complete with coloured pencils that kept the children happy and content during the train ride. On arrival in London we made our way via the underground to Fulham Broadway station using the wonder of the "Oyster" card pre-pay system to pave our way. How clever ...in my day as a London kid I just hopped on and off at will ...money did I hear you say! We arrived at "The Bridge" at about 3pm and set about booking into our booked family room at the hotel adjacent to the actual ground ...for football historians the hotel is just past the entrance that was/ is known as the Britannia Gate entrance where, incidentally as an eight year old I queued up from 11am waiting to see my first ever game at Chelsea F.C. The turnstiles in those days opened at 1.30pm for a 3pm kick off. I survived due to the lemonade and sugar sandwiches that my mum had put into my over the shoulder knapsack. We booked into the hotel and whilst doing so I noticed a true Chelsea legend sitting in the lobby chatting to an associate ...now imagine my thrill at arriving at a point in time where my granddaughter ‘Yvie Chelsea Taylor Aris’ (that is her name) has the opportunity to meet the true football legend that is ‘Ron Chopper Harris’. Yes you have guessed, being a lifelong Chelsea fan, and due to her surname I call my granddaughter ‘Chopper’ ...so on a bright clear sunny day in South West London at the home of football ...Chopper met Chopper. I am delighted to say no one was carried off ...no names were taken and no one has to face a football

disciplinary charge after this clash off titans. As for the game itself ...it was a typical end of season clash ...however the one all draw did mean that Huddersfield retained their Premier League status for another season. During the pre-match kick about the giant screen at the bridge informed the crowd that the last time Chelsea had entertained Huddersfield in a league game at the Bridge was 46, yes 46 years ago and the result that day (January 1971) was 2-2. As I read the screen it suddenly occurred to me that I was in attendance also at that game ...the next thing that occurred to me was ...where did those 46 years go? As I type, I still cannot get my head around the time frame involved. After the game, that the grandkids really did enjoy, we settled back into the bar at the hotel ...had a few drinks and chatted about the game and the experience with the grandkids. They were both excited at the spectacle ...at the noise and at the excitement that is Premier League football. Next morning bright and early after breakfast at the hotel, we decamped on route for The Natural History Museum in South Kensington, determined to use the two and a half spare hours before our next train journey to visit the dinosaurs. On arrival at the museum the first thing that impresses is the outside facade of the place itself ...it is quite simply a most imposing building. The second thing that impresses is the sheer number of people wanting to enter the museum ...after a ten minute wait we finally entered to the look of sublime enjoyment on the kids’ faces. “Tyrannosaurus Rex” shouted Henry ...and again ...and again ...in fact Henry thought every collection of hanging dinosaur bones was a T Rex. Onward into the museum and to the home of the world’s largest animal ‘The Blue Whale’ ...24 metres long he /she brought a look of fascination to all who looked at it ...what a magnificent creature. The next forty or so minutes was spent just taking in some of the large range of exhibits that this wonderful museum has to offer. Another trip will be planned allowing more time to visit the Science Museum, and other wonderful museums that London has to offer. But for now it was time to travel back to Manchester for my son and his children, whilst a truly shattered grandad made his way to the peace and quiet of Hayling Island for a couple of days of rest and recreation before it was onward to Brighton for a couple of days for a family visit. It was then onward again and home to the delights of Spain and my typewriter.
Passport Checks. Arriving at Manchester airport I was sent to the passport checking machine ...you know the one's that check your passport via eye recognition. On being instructed to "go to that queue" by a Border Force operative ...I mentioned to the said operative that “My passport never seems to be recognised, as indeed neither do I by the technology.” “Never mind that” was the reply... “please join the queue”. After several futile attempts to enter the country of my birth I was again instructed to “go to that operative over there for manual check in”. Success at manual check in. Now the point of this piece is that on arrival at Alicante I was also instructed to join the queue for eye recognition Passport entry... this time however the technology worked, and I was allowed into my adopted homeland ...the strange thing was that all other nationals of European Union countries were allowed to simply by pass the machines and enter with a cursory glance by the Guardia. Brexit rules, although officially Brexit has not yet been enacted? I now feel like a second class citizen ...Oh Brexiteers what have you done? Female Focus June 2018

What to do if someone is Choking?
Continuing our series of “What to do if…” articles, this month we look at what to do if someone is choking. Please note though that this information applies to adults and children over one year old. If you want advice for babies under one year old, then you can find advice on this at: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/helping-choking-baby/. Choking happens when someone's airway suddenly gets blocked, either fully or partly, so they can't breathe. Mild choking: encourage them to cough If the airway is only partly blocked, the person will usually be able to speak, cry, cough or breathe. They will usually be able to clear the blockage themselves. To help with mild choking in an adult or child over one year old: • Encourage the person to keep coughing to try and clear the blockage. • Ask the person to try to spit out the object if it's in their mouth. • Don't put your fingers in their mouth to help them as they may bite you accidentally. • If coughing doesn't work, start back blows (see below). Severe choking: back blows and abdominal thrusts Where choking is severe, the person will not be able to speak, cry, cough or breathe. Without help, they will eventually become unconscious. To help an adult or child over one year old: • Stand behind the person and slightly to one side. Support their chest with one hand. Lean the person forward so that the object blocking their airway will come out of their mouth, rather than moving further down. • Give up to 5 sharp blows between the person's shoulder blades with the heel of your hand. (The heel is between the palm of your hand and your wrist). • Check if the blockage has cleared. • If not, give up to 5 abdominal thrusts (see below). Important: Don't give abdominal thrusts to babies under one year old or to pregnant women. • Stand behind the person who is choking. • Place your arms around their waist and bend them forward. • Clench one fist and place it right above their belly button. • Put the other hand on top of your fist and pull sharply inwards and upwards. • Repeat this movement up to 5 times. • If the person's airway is still blocked after trying back blows and abdominal thrusts, get help immediately: • Call 112 for an ambulance. Tell the operator that the person is choking. Or if you are a member of the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea then call our 24hr emergency helpline on 96 579 6099 and we will have one of our state-of-the-art ambulances (think mobile intensive care unit) immediately dispatched and on its way to you. • Continue with the cycles of 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts until help arrives. • If the person loses consciousness and they're not breathing, you should begin cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with chest compressions. Complications: Get urgent medical help (A&E, Medical Centre or their GP if in hours) if: • they have a persistent cough after choking • they feel something is still stuck in their throat • And finally, please note that abdominal thrusts can cause serious injuries. Where this potentially life-saving treatment has been necessary, a health professional such as their GP or a doctor in A&E should always examine the person afterwards. Membership of the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea is just €50 for a whole year for the whole family. Call their Registration Manager Laure Bolufer on 96 579 6099 (10am to 1pm every weekday). The plight of the older dog Charity associations and societies that rescue and take care of unwanted and abused animals face an all too common dilemma, which is the re-homing of their older dogs (and cats). Cute little puppies and smaller pets are generally favoured over older ones, and this becomes even worse if the older animals happen to be a larger size.
file photo
Why is this? Is this because they are not loveable, not healthy or unattractive? Perhaps it is more due to the incorrect mindset that young animals are “better”. In fact, there are many positives to adopting an older dog. He or she almost always is already house trained, well past the first year when the dog still has to learn everything (like for instance not to destroy your new slippers). However, most importantly, you can see for yourself the dog’s already formed character, how the dog behaves, their medical history is generally known, is it quiet and friendly or used to other pets, dogs or cats, which are already in your household? Many questions are answered with regards to how a new, but older dog may fit into your life, or not. Your commitment to the animal is also shorter than the usual 10 to 12 years, or more. A case in point is my story about Sammie. While living in France, the local SPA (similar to the RSCPA in the UK) held a so-called open-door day on a Saturday, inside a large shopping mall, bringing with them kittens and four dogs. The volunteers had put up their boards to attract the public and handed out folders, and even set up a low fenced large pen for the kittens, much to the delight of children. Rarely would I go shopping on the too busy Saturdays but this day was an exception and it turned out to be when Sammie had her day. She had been brought to the SPA at the age of 6 years but in spite of her good looks and the fact that everyone loved her, no one came for her during the next three years… When I saw her at the mall, and petted her, she hopefully wagged her tail and I instantly knew this was going to be my dog. She apparently came from a breed called Gascony Blue, an ancient French hound, dating back to the Middle Ages and at the time was mainly used to hunt large game in the Pyrenees mountains. These dogs exist both in a smaller and a larger size, up to 70 lbs. Sammie weighed about 50 pounds. These dogs have a beautiful fawn tri-colour short haired coat, a long tail and a square muzzle with impressive long floppy ears. Being primarily hunters, they are known as blood hounds or pack hounds. We think Sammie was perhaps a mixed breed because she turned out to be great family dog – very gentle, smart, obedient, clean and not a barker! Never have we regretted my on the spot decision to take her because she turned out to be such a lovely dog with all the qualities I’ve described above. When out for her (favourite) “walkies”, people invariably would stop to admire her, even asking all kinds of questions. And this was the dog no one wanted?! We had her until she reached the end of her life at age 15 and we still miss her dearly. Therefore, if you are considering having a dog in your life, do not overlook the older ones, they are so much worth it and for the rest of their lives deserve a good home that perhaps may be yours!? Summer planning for the craft market in Jávea port The weekly craft market that is being held every Sunday morning in the square by the sea front at the end of Avenida Jaime I in the port (Puerto) of Jávea, will continue until 10 June. After that, it is time to make room for the summer evening fair, which will start on Friday 15 June. This is the sixth year running that Amata (the regional craft association) joins forces with the local shopkeepers to liven up the promenade along the sea front in the Port of Jávea with a craft fair. A real craft fair, with real craft workers who make what they sell and hope to sell what they make. Not for nothing has Amata chosen the slogan "Artesanía de Autor®" which means that what you see is made by the man or woman on the stall. The stalls can vary from week to week but you will find stalls with leather bags, leather belts, rag dolls, wooden toys and puppets, jewellery from silver, copper, ceramics, macramé or wrought iron, hand painted designer clothes and even some water colours, paintings and sculptures. Many of the people on the stalls will be working, and you can watch, or get them to add a name or a detail or, if you can wait a few days, get them to make something to order. Amata was set up in 1998 and remains true to its original philosophy, which is that only goods made by the people on the stalls can be sold on the craft fairs it organises. That is why more and more aficionados have come to appreciate this special quality - the quality of a gallery even if it is sold in the street from a stall. Some stalls come for the whole summer, and others for a shorter period so as to combine a few weeks at the beach with the possibility of earning a living. It's a varied show, week by week. Never boring. A visit to the market can be combined with a stroll to the port (with its fishing boats and fish market) and back along the promenade with its attractive bars and restaurants, shops and terraces, to enjoy the cool sea breezes and watch all the other visitors walking, jogging and cycling along. And, if you like modern architecture, you can have a look at the Virgen de Loreto church, a concrete structure shaped like a ship! So, until 10 June you can find the craft market in the port on the Sunday morning from 11am to 2pm or later. The summer market starts on 15 June and will be there every evening until 2 September (except for a few days when the locals celebrate their fiestas) and opens at 7pm in the evening until midnight. For further details ring 639 979 678 (we do speak English) and photographs of last year's market can be found at http://www.amata.es/JaveaSum17.html.

Colours that feed your soul
Transform your bedroom into a beautiful retreat with curtains and soft furnishings in colours that feed your soul. We often concentrate our design attention to the rooms where we live our active lives and entertain friends and family, neglecting the more private areas of our homes. However, our bedrooms are very special rooms, our own personal spaces and a sanctuary where we can retreat from the world, relax and unwind, restoring our body with rest and sleep. Bedrooms are where we start and end the day, and as such, creating the right ambience is vital to our well being; the colours that we wake up to affect us throughout the day, and the atmosphere that we relax in affects the quality of our sleep. The fundamental elements of your bedrooms’ decór may well already be in place; your bed, bedside cabinets, chest of drawers, and wardrobe space, but you can completely change the look and feel of the room by changing or adding curtains and soft furnishings to introduce colour, texture and style.
&
Colour Therapy for the Bedroom The first step is to decide what ambience you want to create and choose the colours that create that look and feel. Burgundy, scarlet and red are very energetic and physical colours, great for stimulation but not so good for a peaceful night’s sleep. Pink and plums are softer and more romantic versions of these colours and much more suited to a bedroom. Peach and apricot are emotionally supportive colours, providing love from their pink tone and energy from their yellow tone. However yellow by itself, although a cheerful colour, is mentally stimulating and should never be used in the bedroom of an insomniac. If yellow is your preferred colour, use it sparingly and ensure it is a pale tint or even cream. Blues make a bright bedroom serene, but if you are of a quiet disposition or prone to depression, it is better to use lilac, orchid, lavender or almond blossom tones which are both soothing and supportive. Mulberry, salmon or rose pink are stronger pink tones for those of you that are not so keen on pastels and promote warmth and affection while still being restful. Blues and greens are soothing and refreshing in a bedroom, and create a relaxing and restful atmosphere, particularly appropriate for the bedroom of someone suffering from stress. Blue-green and turquoise are both peaceful and fresh and especially good for this hot climate and sun filled rooms. Feminine bedrooms Many women like to have a feminine feel to their bedrooms, and all white walls with crisp white bed linen is a classic clean and cool look. Offset with wood furniture and natural textures, an all-white bedroom has a simple and fresh atmosphere that can be further softened with plants to subdue the harsh whites and create a less clinical feel. FF - Your magazine
Whatever the colour, a distinctly feminine feel can be created with layers of softly draped fabric at the windows, and a bed dressed with a sumptuous throw over and plenty of soft cushions. Consider an upholstered headboard to coordinate with your other soft furnishings and to create a hotel chic feeling. Masculine bedrooms Men can unwittingly choose so-called masculine colours for their bedrooms such as black, navy and burgundy, however these dark colours can have a stultifying effect on an individual, and large expenses of these colours can end up depressing and negative. If these colours are to be used, keep them to a minimum and complement them with brighter, lighter colours as well.
Natural balance As well as influencing the atmosphere of a room, curtains also play a vital role in maintaining a natural balance to our sleep patterns. It is all too easy to drop the persiana blind at night to create darkness, however the lack of light flooding the room in the morning means we don´t wake up naturally and this can affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. If you find it difficult to wake up in the morning and lack energy, then light curtains are best for you, allowing natural light to flood the room making you feel brighter and more alert. However, if you are a poor sleeper then heavier curtains will ensure light is blocked from the room during the night, but still allow enough light in to allow you to wake up naturally. If you would like to change the look and feel of your bedroom, we at Lotus Interiors are here to help guide you in the right direction, with inspiring ideas and practical advice on what would best suit you. Your Annual Garden Checklist Well it’s officially the middle of the year in June, and I cannot believe how the year is flying on, the steady start to the year (temperature wise) has meant that www.charlesworthgardens.com most of the gardens have only just started coming into bloom during the end of May and beginning of June. I should imagine that the summer heat will have started by the time you are reading this. So, it’s the time of year to check your irrigation system is running correctly and at the right times. Here is my irrigation check list. First you need to see if you have a fully automated system with a bank of valves or if you have a tap fed system. 1. With either of these systems check or change the battery, normally this is a 9 volt battery (the small square one). Both of these systems require a battery, the tap fed system requires it for full function and the fully automated system requires it as a back-up in case mains power fails and will also save all of your watering times, so you don’t have a problem if you do have a power shortage. 2. Check the year, month, day and time. If these aren’t correct then your irrigation will not function when you want it to. 3. If you know what your normal settings are for successful irrigation, then you will be able to make sure that the correct running times and or run programme is selected.
continued on next page
Female Focus June 2018
&
4. Now it is time to get into the garden. Run your system on a manual run, this allows you to turn it on and off without disturbing any of the programme times, purge the system to make sure that all the air has escaped, especially if you haven’t had it running all winter, then slowly and quietly walk around your garden with the system running. Unless you have bad hearing (in which case you may need some help) then normally the sound of gushing water from a split or broken irrigation tube is fairly obvious. If you have a problem, then a quick cut and replacement of the piece is easy. Then just check for any pools of water if the pipe has split underground.
FF - House & Home Page 33 www.femalefocusonline.com 5. Depending on how old your system is you may wish to check the nozzles that release the water, as these can become calcified, in which case you will want to change them as this can lead to a dramatic reduction in the quantity of water released from them.
6. If you have a lawn then you will normally have pop up sprinklers, there are a couple of types, a small fixed variety and a turbine which is the larger type which move. Turn on your system manually and allow the sprinklers within the zone to pop up, check the direction which they are facing (you will be amazed how much they can self-adjust and change through the year). If you need to change the direction of the small ones you can normally give them a little twist (of the part which is popped up) to re direct them. If this isn’t enough then you will have to unscrew the large collar (turn the system off first), this will release the pop-up part and just by lifting and dropping it back in on the correct adjustment, will see where it needs to be, then screw the collar back on. If you have a large sprinkler or turbine, you may need a special key to adjust these and or, you have to pop the top cap off and adjust the special clip inside which dictates from where and to where the sprinkler nozzles spray, you will be able to find online guides as well to help. Plant/s of the month. I have two plants of the month again, the first being Jacaranda Mimosifolia, we all know the tree that gets the great blooms of blue / purple flowers. It is a spectacular tree and is often planted at the sides of roads and consequently they are pruned regularly and heavily. I prefer the shape of the tree to be natural and only prune in the normal way you would prune any other tree. My other plant this month (although it is a little late this year) is, Acanthus Mollis, or Bear’s Breeches. I love this plant as it is one of the closest things we can have in the garden here to foxglove (digitalis) or Lupins, they have large flower spikes and can look spectacular in the right place in the garden. Give it a go. If you need any help with your irrigation systems or sourcing plants just drop us an email at info@charlesworthgardens.com or visit www.charlesworthgardens.com where you can see pictures of just some of our work and visit sister company web sites for other great services and products.

Say “Fog Off” to Mosquito Bites Is it me or are the mosquitoes getting worse? We normally get a break from the bites during winter, but for many it seems that winter never happened. And with Spring here and summer on its way, the dreaded mozzies are on their way. Typical scenario: you have a beautiful villa, lovely garden, but are imprisoned indoors behind the mosquiteras. What if you could somehow treat the garden to make it a no-fly zone for mosquitoes and other bugs. Fog Off Misting Well that’s exactly what Fog Off provide. Using their proprietary misting method, they ‘spray’ a solution that sticks to the underside of foliage creating a no-fly protection for 28 days. It eliminates mosquitoes and also inhibits further reproduction, an anti-mosquito double-whammy! And it’s safe, being 100% biodegradable and leaves no active residues. Treatment is simple. The Fog Off team shows up, mists the garden and if necessary any specific standing water areas, downpipe areas etc, to clear them of dormant larvae and adult mosquitoes. Laundry Additive New for this year is a revolutionary washing/laundry additive. Simply add 10ml of liquid to your wash and the very clothes you wear will act as a mosquito repellent. Its invisible nano-particles stick to clothing, bed linen, etc for 20 washes. Again, it's perfectly safe and if you want a testimonial, well it's already in use in Africa to combat Malaria, and also used by the military. You can buy directly from Fog Off via their website! So don’t let the mozzies win, tell them to “Fog Off” and enjoy your summer, bite free. Visit www.fogoffspain.com or call/ Whatsapp 681 609 730.

No slip-ups with my tiles! There is little doubt ceramic tiles and marble flooring are beautiful and stylish, unfortunately, they can also be risky. The high gloss and shine can be deceptive and while your flooring may look elegant and glamorous, it can be dangerous when wet. The last thing you want is for anyone to slip and hurt themselves on your gorgeous floor. This is where SinSlip come into the picture. Whether you have ceramic, stone or porcelain floors, they can stop the slipping. The SinSlip team will treat your floor so that it always looks good, keeps the shimmer and the style, but is totally slip-free. Tiles date back thousands of years. Porcelain and ceramic tiles have their origins in ancient Egypt and China. The beauty of tiles then was extraordinary - each one was individually handmade, using only the best possible raw materials. On top of that, each tile was hand painted, and a real art work of its own. These exotic tiles made their way around the world via traders and today you can see old and exquisite tiles throughout Europe, Asia and the East. They really are stunning. Today, thousands of years later, tiles are still totally gorgeous but they are mostly mass produced. They are incredibly hard wearing, easy to clean and keep our houses cool in the hot Spanish summers, none the less, they can be very slippery when wet and may lead to some serious falls and nasty injuries. Of course, this scenario is totally avoidable by talking to the people at SinSlip, they can treat most types of floor. The process used is safe, quick and produces a permanent anti-slip surface. If you have a residential or commercial environment that could benefit from the SinSlip treatment, they would love to hear from you. Drop them a line or call today for a free onsite appraisal. U3A Calpe Our cycling is leisurely, climbing is at everyone’s own pace, regrouping at junctions and with a café stop. After the summer break we start with 20k building in fitness, typical rides are then 35-45k. Occasionally we have a full day on easy routes and weekday rides. Newcomers to cycling welcome. We are a mixed lot, ages and bikes, some on mountain bikes some on road bikes, but all very relaxed and sociable. Please contact Group leader Verity Waddell at veritywaddell@yahoo.co.uk for more information. www.u3acalpe.org.

Charity Shop of Calpe donation #
The Charity Shop of Calpe recently donated a mobile water tender and foam machine, worth nearly €4,000 to the Protección Civil in the town. The tender will be used for fighting certain fires in the municipality, as it can get to sites which a larger fire engine may not be able to access easily. The Protección Civil were delighted by this generous donation. If you would like to volunteer to help in the Charity Shop, have any items to donate or would just like to pop in and buy something, you'll find the shop half way up Gabriel Miró on the right hand side, inside Galerías Mar Azul. Just follow the signs.

Moraira-Teulada U3A Hosts International Football Matches On 10 May, members of the Moraira-Teulada U3A Walking Football Team hosted their 3rd International event at the La Senieta, sports area in Moraira. Two teams had travelled from Widnes in the UK to join in matches with 6 local Spanish teams making up the 2 leagues of 4. Playing for two trophies, the Sponsors Net Connect team, featuring Moraira U3A players, surpassed all expectations to reach the final for the Silver Salva. Unfortunately, they were unable to maintain their semi-final momentum and went down 4-1 to a very good Widnes Whites visiting team. The main event of the day was for the Moraira U3A Cup. This was intended to be an Over 60s tournament, but Bob Nix eventually assembled a Moraira U3A Over 65s team. The initial league programme threw together two local Moraira teams. The young ‘A’ against the over 65s. As expected, the A team had the majority of possession, but Nick Connor and Derek Earl scored two long range goals for the Over 65s to force a draw and a penalty shootout. The star of last year’s International Event final penalty shootout, goalkeeper Alan Gibb, starred again by saving the penalties to win the match for the Over 65s. In the final, which was watched by more than 100 spectators, the Over 65s played a highly competitive match against the Lo Crispen team (named after an infamous tavern local to the team). Derek Earl scored another glorious goal for the U3A Over 60s who were winning almost to the final goal when only seconds before the final whistle The Lo Crispen team scored to draw level. In the resulting penalty shootout Alan Gibb starred again scoring the final goal which won the Cup for the Moraira U3A over 60s Pensioners. The big win of the day was the tremendous good will and spirit created between the two visiting guest teams and their hosts in Moraira-Teulada U3A.
Calpe U3A
The monthly meeting of Calpe U3A took place on the 17 May in the Sol Ifach Hotel.
It was a special meeting as we had the Calpe U3A Choir performing their “Spring into Song” concert in aid of the Gargasindi school. Some of the pupils and staff attended and joined in with the singing and enjoyed the lively performance with audience participation. A collection took place for the Gargasindi school and an impressive 400€ was raised in the room; a big thank you to every one who gave so generously. We also had an informative talk about private heath care in Spain by Kate Taylor from ASSSA Seguros. We would like to thank all our behind the scenes volunteers who helped to make the packed meeting a big success. Calpe U3A have many groups that you could join, check our Face Book Page and www.u3acalpe.org. Our next meeting is at the SOL IFACH on the Thursday 21 June 10am for 10.30am all welcome. The Aircrew Association Costa Blanca bids farewell to its founder Peter Beechey The Aircrew Association has been alive on the Costa Blanca since 1988, 30 years! It was founded here as a new branch of what was then a thriving global organisation, with branches in all parts of the world. Its founder was Peter Beechey who established the branch having recognised that there were, like him, many other former service aircrew living on the Costa Blanca who would enjoy the aim of the association which is: ‘to foster comradeship amongst those who, having been awarded an official flying badge, have qualified to operate military aircraft and are serving or have served as military aircrew in the armed forces of the United Kingdom or those nations which are allies of the united kingdom or the commonwealth’. From its early beginnings the branch has been extremely popular and membership has been vibrant for many years. Peter, a former wartime and post-war RAF pilot introduced many initiatives to the branch and was a leading light until, over recent years, he became less able to sustain his previous active participation. Sadly, Peter died peacefully last month at his home in Jávea where he and his wife of 70 years, Eileen, had lived for over 30 years. Peter’s funeral and celebration of his life was attended by fellow aircrew members, Members of the Royal Air Forces Association, MABS and other friends and neighbours who were privileged to join in a moving service conducted by father Marcus Ronchetti, the honorary chaplain to the aircrew association. The eulogy was said by Henry Horth, President of the association and Max Maxwell, Chairman, read messages from Peter’s family. Following the service, Eileen hosted a reception in the comfortable environs of Jávea Golf Club. The results of Peter’s vision in forming the association have been enjoyed and appreciated by numerous members and their guests over many years. Peter will be remembered with much gratitude by many.

Over 100 walkers take part in the first Pieta House ‘Darkness Into Light’ event in Costa Blanca to raise awareness on the issues of Suicide and Self Harm Pieta House’s flagship fundraising event Darkness into light came to the Costa Blanca last Saturday when over a hundred participants joined the 5km charity walk starting and ending at Gogartys at La Zenia. There was a reflective kilometre at the 4km mark, where participants lit candles in memory of loved ones and friends and watched the sun rise over La Zenia Beach before extinguishing the candles as a symbol of hope before completing the walk. Darkness into Light Costa Blanca was one of 170 other venues taking part in the walk worldwide with over 200,000 charity walkers helping to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds to support the work of Pieta House who support those at risk of self-harm or suicide or those affected by it. In the lead up to the event and on the morning, we raised over 1000€ which is in addition to the entry fees which go to Pieta House and our charity partners here in Spain, Cruz Roja. This will now be an annual event and we are in the process of registering our charity here in Spain as Pieta House Costa Blanca to enable us to work with Cruz Roja where we aim to offer a service, in a very small way to start with, similar to Pieta House in Ireland. We appreciate the support of Rocio and her team at Gogarty’s Bar La Zenia who readily offered their help over several weeks including keeping the bar open overnight on the 11th May to enable us to assemble there from 4.00am for the walk to start at 5.15am. We would also like to thank council member Sofia Alvarez who helped us with the permit for the walk and the local police who supported us on the morning and escorted us on our way. We were also supported by the Emerald Isle on the Orihuela Costa, Oasis Bar in Benijofar, Enchanted Florists & Mia's Party Shop in Catral and photographer Christophe Peeters who volunteered his time to take magnificent pictures. If you would like to be a volunteer for Darkness Into Light in any capacity, please contact Beverley Duffin at bevatpietahouse@outlook.com or Fionnula Fitzsimons at Fionnula_Fitzsimons@hotmail.com.

Jávea Bowlathon The players at the bowling club based at the Inn on the Green, Jávea, along with the captain came up with the idea for a mammoth Bowlathon to raise funds for The Parkinson’s Support Group. This they certainly did and raised the fabulous sum of 1705.00€. The participants bowled from 10am until 10pm, a solid 12 hours in all (what a feat!). This money will help pay for Neurological Rehabilitation for the Parkinson's patients. Our special thanks go to bowls club Captain Felicity Jenkins for all her help with the organisation and whose initiative has raised funds in the past for us and she continues to do so. This treatment will help those members experiencing mobility and stature problems. This is most prevalent in people with this debilitating disease. The Hamiltons Formula comes to Jalón There are a number of reasons why Hamiltons have been so successful and are established as one of the leading estate agencies on the Costa Blanca – they believe in serving the local community. Complementing their existing offices in Moraira, Calpe, Jávea and Els Poblets, is the new Jalón office. Peter McLaren-Kennedy has joined the team and, having spent best part of the last 2 months learning the Hamiltons way in the Els Poblets office, he is ready to help get you moving. By sharing one website and database across all the offices, sellers’ properties are immediately exposed to significantly more potential buyers – another of Hamiltons strengths. Sellers’ properties are also advertised extensively across Europe and on all leading website including Kyero, Habitaclia, Green-Acres and Rightmove. According to Peter “Jalón presents some unique challenges, with coastal and inland sales significantly different. I’m really getting to know the areas and have really begun to appreciate what the Orba and Jalón valleys have to offer. I’m excited to bring a fresh approach to selling properties for the people of Jalón, Orba and surrounding villages”. The office can be found on Avenida Joanot Martorell just across the road from the garden centre! If you’re ready to sell or have had your property on the market and it’s not selling, give Peter a call or pop in and get listed. As they say at Hamiltons – “we’ll get you moving”!

Moving in or moving on, don't make the move without us The Property Team in Jalรณn is a small, independent boutique estate agency run by husband and wife team, Stephen and Andrea who have combined their skills so that not only can they help you find your perfect home, they can help you keep it that way too. We decided to work together doing something we both know and enjoy, and we love getting to know our clients and helping to fulfil their expectations when buying or selling here in Spain. It really goes to the heart of our philosophy which is to help people start a new chapter in their lives. We recognise that buying or selling can be a truly stressful episode and we help clients with every aspect of the transaction, be that helping with mortgage advice, insurances, quotations for building works as well as offering a complete property management and maintenance service. We hear so many horror stories and having moved here in the early 2000s we have learnt from our own experiences and completely understand that there is the occasional nightmare, but we genuinely help people get through any problems they encounter and ensure they have a positive buying or selling experience with us. We are often asked by potential vendors why they should place their properties with us and were recently delighted and humbled to receive some great testimonials from clients who said: 'We are happy with what you do for us, you are worth it.' 'I wish you a good working day and again: thanks for all your support!' 'I will absolutely recommend your real estate office to anyone who needs a good and professional team to help them with buying or selling their real estate.' 'Many thanks for keeping us up to date and thanks for your help in the house sale.' 'We are still stunned at how quickly it has gone.' Whether you are buying, selling or renting in and around the Jalรณn area, you know where to come for help with any issues with your property knowing professional, independent advice is always available.
