ike many expat businesses in Spain, we’re a tight, family-run business operating from an office on an outlying urbanisation in Calpe. Like all businesses, we rely heavily on the internet to be able to run it. From basics such as emails to the more specifics of exchanging lots of data, internet speed is vital. However, and again like many businesses operating the way we do, getting a decent internet connection has been a major thorn in our side. Uploading our magazine to the printer’s servers has been time consuming, frustrating, and even costly. We have tried so many providers who offer the world and we still end up with only 4Mb upload. We used to plan our large uploads overnight and hope and pray the connection didn’t go down so we wouldn’t be late.
Thanks to Telitec and their Calpe-Fibre, all that has changed. We signed up as soon as we knew it would be coming and on 11 February, Telitec’s installers turned up to our offices in Urb Empedrola, fed the fibre cable from the street to our router and did a bit of techy stuff and that was it. 600Mb up and down. To say it’s life changing isn’t an exaggeration. Already we see the benefit in speed, and even more so in reliability. We didn’t realise just how much time we were wasting waiting for downloads and uploads. Which means more time with the family and less stressing over work issues! We couldn’t fault the installers, they turned up on time, observed all the Covid rules perfectly, and got on with the job 100% fuss-free! And, they didn’t leave a mess. At 25€ per month, we can’t believe what superb value Calpe-Fibre is and can honestly say if you haven’t got Fibre, then call Telitec today! I know it sounds like we’ve been paid to say these things, but honestly, it’s that good we’re happy to tell everyone! ● Ask them about their phone packages - they have some amazing new national and international deals.

Be Wise. Do It Now. I personally am feeling very upset about Brexit as no lorries seem to be getting here and English supermarkets are getting emptier and emptier. Let us hope that they will still be able to continue supplying us with some of our favourite foods at some stage. Due to COVID, very little is mentioned in the press about Brexit but there must be many companies distraught about the trading conditions. In Spain it is all a little confusing regarding the vaccine. Sadly due to the EU, Europe is going to be well behind the UK with recovery because until the vaccine is distributed to the vast majority, nothing is going to happen to make it safer for us. Due to Brexit regulations, health insurance has been extremely busy as this is part of the residencia application. I understand some are refusing to insure their vehicles. Even if your car is off the road, or you are not in Spain to drive it, it still needs to be insured – this is Spanish law. At the same time, please make sure that you have adequate house insurance cover – a cheap price will not give you what you need, especially as there are a lot of desperate people around. You need to take precautions regarding leaving anything in your car and if you are absent from your property, you do need to consider an alarm linked to the police. It is all about protecting yourself, your family and your assets. Can I suggest that your partner/family discuss the merits of a funeral plan. I appreciate that it is not a nice subject, but I understand that there are many people without a will or funeral plan. This, of course, makes it very difficult for your loved ones. Lack of a will creates an on-going situation and is difficult and costly to resolve. Exactly the same applies when no funeral plan is in place. It is worth it to protect your loved ones. Handling grief is very difficult and provokes so many emotions. Try not to make it more difficult for each other. Come and talk to us. We are there to help you make the right decisions.

This month sees St David's Day, International Women's Day, Mother's Day, the beginning of Lent, St Patrick's Day and of course the first day of spring, hopefully something in there we can all celebrate. This last year has been very trying, with home schooling and all the consequences being hard on both children and parents alike. Hopefully the little darlings will give all you mums out there one day off this month to wish you a Happy Mother's Day. Many use Lent as a time of giving up something like chocolate or alcohol. Why not this year use it as a time of giving up something to help someone / something? You could give up those clothes you no longer wear and donate them. Give up treats and give the money you would have spent to charity, or give up buying plastic water bottles and buy a reusable one, giving back to the planet. If we all did something think of the difference we could make. Congratulations to Marianne Hunt from Torre De La Horadada who won last month's competition after spotting the Curry On Cooking logo. For your chance to win a selection of Curry Kits this month, see inside for full details. Good luck. Lesley Pick up your next issue on 6 April

Specsavers Ópticas launches campaign to inform and protect against glaucoma
S
pecsavers Ópticas has today launched its Glaucoma 2021 campaign, to raise awareness of the condition known as the silent thief of sight, which affects more than half a million people in Spain alone.
To support World Glaucoma Week (7-13 March), Specsavers Ópticas stores on the Costa Blanca are advising people of the importance of detecting glaucoma in its early stages by encouraging them to book a comprehensive eye test and to learn about the condition. Lisa James, store director of Specsavers Ópticas Guardamar comments: ‘Glaucoma occurs when naturally-occurring fluid inside the eye does not drain properly, causing a build-up of pressure. The condition often affects both eyes, usually to varying degrees, however, there are two types - chronic glaucoma which develops slowly with subtle changes to your vision, and acute glaucoma which develops rapidly with a sudden, painful build-up of pressure in the eye.’ Specsavers Ópticas stores have, on many occasions, helped to successfully detect glaucoma and in turn ensured customers can get the treatment they need to manage the condition. Recently a customer came into the Javea store for an eye test, despite not suffering with any underlying symptoms. But his decision to attend the appointment and prioritise his eye health proved to be crucial, when optometrist Abel Santiago Campaña detected early signs of glaucoma and referred him for further testing and treatment. He was very surprised that there was an issue, as he hadn’t noticed a change in his vision, which is very common. Optometrist Abel adds: ‘If you have chronic glaucoma, it can take a long time before you realise you have a problem with your eyesight. This is because chronic glaucoma is painless and usually damages the outer edge of the vision and works slowly inwards. Without regular checks you may not notice a problem until the glaucoma is near the centre of your vision. Using a combination of tests, we were able to identify possible glaucoma at its very early stages and refer this customer to a specialist who could prescribe drops to reduce the pressure and stop any damage being done to the eye.’ Globally more than 64 million people worldwide have glaucoma, and of these, many are unaware of it. To identify whether you have glaucoma, before you develop symptoms that could permanently damage your sight, make an appointment for a complete eye test at Specsavers Ópticas. As an essential service, opticians are not affected by travel restrictions and have implemented rigorous hygiene standards, wearing of PPE and capacity control to keep customers safe. There are Specsavers Ópticas stores in Javea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia on the Costa Blanca. Find your nearest store at www.specsavers.es 1CGCOO Press release

Questions and answers
W
Female Focus Magazine March 2021
e caught up with managing director Ian Whitby at Logic Financial Consultants to ask some of the most common questions Logic receive when meeting with clients for the first time.
Q: Can you advise on all areas of financial planning? A: Yes, thanks to our qualifications and regulation, we can offer advice on all aspects of financial planning, including pensions, investments and taxation. As a company, we have extensive experience in both the UK and Spain so can highlight the key differences between each jurisdiction and advise accordingly. Q: What are the benefits of investing money? A: There are lots of benefits to investing money in the market, but it will ultimately come down to your own personal goals. Every individual or couple we meet have different objectives depending on their own unique circumstances. Some are looking to grow money to take an ongoing income, whilst others simply wish to achieve capital growth. More often than not the investor is looking for tax efficiency and/or diversification. Q: Why don't I just keep my money in the bank? A: Whereas in years gone by investors have received good growth on their bank deposits, the interest rates of today's world tell a different story. Bank depositors are currently earning very little interest on their savings due to the low rates and there is a real danger that any capital held in banks will start losing its value as and when inflation increases. With interest rates tipped to remain low for the foreseeable future, many individuals are starting to consider alternative products. Q: What asset allocation will you use? A: There is no “one size fits all” for an investor's portfolio and we would sit down with you to fully understand your goals and objectives. A risk profile questionnaire would have to be completed at the start of the relationship and then updated on a regular basis to make sure any recommended portfolio remains in line with your attitude to risk. Q: What makes you different from other advisers? A: I think the biggest difference lies in our family-run business model. Aside from the additional trust element it provides our clients with, we are also able to keep our fees down as we do not have large overheads. We work on a transparent fee-only basis and have multiple advisers qualified to UK Diploma level, which can be checked online via the Chartered Insurance Institute. Q: What is “fee- only” financial planning and why should that be important to me? A: Advisers have the option of charging clients a fee or receiving commission. If commission is chosen, the investor will almost certainly have a tie in period to the product recommended and an early encashment penalty if they wanted to withdraw money early. In comparison, fee-only advice can keep ongoing costs down for investors by removing any tie in period or penalty.

Bunions or HAV?
he Bunion or Hallux Valgus is a deformity of the foot caused by a deviation of the first toe towards the middle axis of the foot and a deviation of the first metatarsal towards the outer edge of the foot accompanied by irregular bone growth in the first metatarsal head and articular incongruity of the metatarsophalangeal joint. This causes pain due to inflammation of the soft tissues of the area from constant friction against footwear and from the structural and mechanical alteration due to the bone deviation. When is it recommended to operate on bunions? It is recommended to operate on bunions when they are painful, when osteoarthritis appears or the structural deformity affects walking correctly which in turn affects other levels of the locomotor system. It is also advisable to perform surgery in cases in which as a result of
the bunion, the toes are deforming like when the second toe appears hammerlike. When a patient wishes to undergo an operation a professional should study each case individually, taking into account the age, health status, lifestyle ... etc. At Portalet Clinic, we will explain in detail and alleviate any worries without compromise. What type of technique is carried out at Clinica Podológica Portalet? We perform minimum incision surgery. As its name suggests, it is done using minimal skin incisions, usually 2 to 4mm. Through these millimetric incisions we can reach the soft tissues and bone, without causing injury to the adjacent tissues. Advantages of Minimal Incision Surgery: - Immediate recovery as the procedure is minimal. - The patient walks away with a post-surgical shoe without crutches or help. - After just 48 hours the patient can continue life as normal. - Almost painless. - No fixing bolts or needles used. One of the drawbacks of open surgery is the use of fixing materials, with Minimal Incision Surgery fixations are not necessary as the soft tissues themselves, which we have respected, the joint capsule and a light dressing are responsible for this. - Local anesthetic, only affecting the foot, so the dose used is less. - No hemostasia (restriction of blood flow). As the size of the incision is so small, there is little bleeding so there is no need for a tourniquet, thus avoiding all risks of cutting blood flow. - Less risk of infection. The small size of the incisions also decreases the risk of infection. - Barely visible scaring. RESTYLANE KYSSE FILLER OF CHOICE FOR LIP FULLNESS, NATURALNESS AND “KISSABILITY” One of the most common concerns among people considering lip enhancement is not only achieving a natural look and feel after treatment, but also how their partners will find the result. At Zen Smile Spa by C.C, with Restylane Kysse, we can now provide additional confidence and reassurance for patients receiving lip filler. Thanks to results from a unique study which assessed both patient and partner satisfaction following treatment with Restylane Kysse, one of the leading filler brands on the market, 98% loved the “kissability” of their lips and 96% thought that their lips had a natural look after treatment. In addition 90% of the partners were very satisfied with the appearance of the patients’ lips after treatment and the majority of partners agreed that the patients’ lips had a more kissable and natural feel after treatment.

This is a really novel study and product as it’s showing for the first time that both patients and their partners were satisfied with the look and feel of their lips after treatment. This is actually really important as the majority of women who have lip filler want their partner to find their lips sexier and more kissable without them looking unnatural and with Restylane Kysse we can achieve that!

Top Anti-Aging Cosmetic Surgery Procedures
I
f you would like to look younger and more energetic there are plenty of cosmetic surgery options that can help. These may target the wrinkles of the face and eye area, but they can also target different parts of the body to help you look more toned and trim. Jávea based Dr Ignacio Poole, who holds a Master’s Degree in Aesthetic Surgery, and his staff would like to take a moment to look at some of the most popular and effective anti-aging cosmetic surgery options available to patients today.
For the face, a mini-facelift will help reduce wrinkling and sagging in the middle area of the face. It is a surgical procedure that lifts and tightens sagging skin while eliminating many facial creases. A brow lift will address the furrows of the forehead area, and there is also the lower facelift to consider, which is specifically performed to reduce the appearance or prominence of the jowls. The eyes are a major factor when it comes to looking younger. Eyelid surgery can be performed to reduce the sagging of the upper eyelid and also to reduce puffiness or bagginess beneath the eyes. These are all great surgeries which can help shed years from your appearance, for example it is not uncommon for a mini-facelift to achieve some 15 to 20 years rejuvenation of the face. And these procedures are not nearly as costly as you might think. Within the field of cosmetic surgery the use of newer technologies such as lasers, now makes procedures such as these much more accessible, mainstream and affordable. To enhance the body elsewhere, for anyone conscious of their ‘bat wings’ (significant loose skin in the under arm area) then a brachioplasty or ‘arm lift’ could be the best treatment. The demand for this procedure has increased more than 800% since 1997! As women age, they may notice that their breasts droop or sag over time. To remedy this and restore a more pert appearance to the bustline, there is breast lift surgery. In some cases, this can be combined with breast augmentation surgery to help make the breasts perkier and increase their size and shapeliness. There are many more surgical and non-surgical options to consider for effective anti-aging. If you would like to learn more about these different treatments, contact Dr Poole and his team for a completely free initial consultation with no obligation. ● Clinica El Arenal, Av Arenal 2, Jávea. Dysbiosis and its causes {Dysbiosis} Dysbiosis (also called dysbacterosis) refers to a condition with microbial imbalances on, or within the body. Dysbiosis is most prominent in the digestive tract or on the skin, but can also occur on any exposed surface or mucous membrane such as the vagina, lungs, mouth, nose, sinuses, ears, nails or eyes.
O
ur body contains trillions of harmless bacteria known as microbiota living together in our Gastrointestinal tract (GI). Most have a positive effect on our health and contribute to the body’s natural processes. If this bacteria becomes out of balance it leads to Dysbiosis which has a knock-on effect to our health.
Dysbiosis has many symptoms depending on which bacteria is affected and where the imbalance occurs in the GI. Some of the more common include diarrohea, bloating and abdominal pain, constipation, excessive gas, nausea, fatigue and halitosis. Other factors associated with Dysbiosis are diet and life style. Partying and eating fast food will harm your gut where as a healthy diet and regular exercise will help it. Food sensitivities to gluten, sugar, eggs, soy, corn, nuts and dairy amongst others are some of the main causes of Dysbiosis, this is different to food allergies with symptoms occurring even after a few days. Dysbiosis can also be the root cause of seemingly unrelated disorders such as hormone imbalance, autoimmune disease, joint aches and pains, weight and inflammatory disorders. The key to your health issues could be as simple as taking a blood test to check for food sensitivity or a stool test to check the imbalance of bacteria in the gut.

Don't forget to pay attention to the other aspects of your health
Y
es, of course Covid 19 is at the forefront of all of our thoughts at the moment. We are being bombarded by the statistics from all angles. But this doesn't mean that we should forget to take care of our daily health issues. Especially if you have an ongoing health condition, be sure to follow your doctor’s advice on how to take care of yourself. Although it may feel like it at times, in fact Covid has not stopped the world; if you need support or if you have questions about your health, reach out to your Doctor, Nurse, Centro de Salud or Hospital, they are now well practiced in giving support via virtual visits, phone visits, and in-person visits when needed. An Important Quick Win - Checking your Blood Pressure A blood pressure test is a simple way of checking if your blood pressure is too high or too low. Blood pressure is the term used to describe the strength with which your blood pushes on the sides of your arteries as it is pumped around your body. High blood pressure (hypertension) can put a strain on your arteries and organs, which can increase your risk of developing serious problems such as heart attacks and strokes. Low blood pressure (hypotension) isn't usually as serious, although it can cause dizziness and fainting in some people. A blood pressure test is the only way to find out if your blood pressure is too high or too low, because most people won't have any obvious symptoms. Having a test could save your life and is easy, especially here in Spain where most Pharmacies offer a blood pressure test. So the next time that you are out and about, don't walk past a Farmacia without popping in and asking if they offer a test. You will find out the result straightaway from the person doing the test, or from the digital display on the test machine. Walk Your Way Well

Have you got a glass half full or glass half empty kinda attitude? Are you more hopeful than hopeless? Do you have a “yes” or a “yes but” approach to life? I’ve always enjoyed the quote: A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. I have chosen to be an optimist. And believe me, it’s a deliberate weight. And, it will help you become choice. Some days, especially in the current climate, it’s really fitter. Now, I didn’t say hit Everest on hard work. I hear some of you murmur “Pollyanna”. That’s OK your first day out. Start at a level you with me. Derogatory thoughts only gnaw away at their thinker. can manage. Let me know how you get on you out the door, stretching your legs and walking your way well. niamhosheehan@hotmail.com BY USING YOUR MIND! Let’s set the scene! It’s early. Too early. The alarm hasn’t even gone off yet. There’s no way back to sleep because your mind is racing. Choice 1: You lie there another forty five minutes overthinking and getting agitated. When the alarm finally frees you from your bed you resentfully get up. Outcome: You start the day cranky and feeling hard done by. Ever heard the expression “getting up the wrong side of the bed”? That’s you! Choice 2: Rather that lie there twisting and turning cantankerously you GET UP. You throw on some clothes, grab the dog (or just a jacket!) and go for a quick walk round the block and catch an amazing sunrise. Outcome: You start the day feeling empowered, grateful and in control. Which choice do you usually make? Which outcome do you want? They are intrinsically linked and both available to you. It’s a no brainer right? The positive proactive mindset offers a happier result. The short story is that our “primitive” mind will always try to go with the lazy, easy option. But, where does that get us in life? I'll tell you where - It gets us stuck. Try considering how to tackle some of the following obstacles in the coming weeks and really TAKE NOTE of how you feel. Don’t be afraid. Let your choices reflect your HOPES and not your FEARS. I don’t have time to walk: Yes, you do. If you carefully analyse your daily activity (drinking wine and Netflix included) you can undoubtably muster up 30+ minutes to include a walk in your day. If every single minute of your day is already truly full with productive activity then get up 30 minutes earlier - Boom! I don’t like to walk alone: The benefits of walking alone are tremendous and a bit of ME time is good for the spirit and the mind. However, if this really is your Achilles heel then invite a friend along (invite one that you know will say yes!) or use your walking time to make some telephone calls to catch up with friends. Making meaningful connections while you walk is a win-win. I don’t have the motivation to walk: You actually do. It’s right there in the palm of your hand. It’s a case of flipping the coin. The hard part is leaving the house. Just find the motivation to take the first step to boot up and cross the threshold. That wasn't so hard was it? The rest will follow. I’m too old, too fat, too unfit to walk: Eh, well that’s the whole point. Walking will help your feel younger. It will help you lose

our ARIES At the moment there is so much going on that there is no time to sit around. Don't ruin someone's day with your short temper this month. You don't need to prove to anyone just how dedicated you really are, it is plain for all to see. TAURUS Keep thinking outside that box, it really is bringing you so many more ideas. Looking on the positive side of things can be a challenge at the moment, but it really will help you get through. GEMINI Opening your mind to new experiences will give you so many opportunities to create new connections. Keep trying different things and you will find the one for you. CANCER Keep an eye on any dates and deadlines which are important, with times being as they are it is really easy to lose track of things. Be careful of starting an argument over something silly, if you are feeling irritable then stay at home. LEO When giving someone the benefit of the doubt make sure they are not taking advantage of you. Figuring out where something went wrong in the past can finally bring you the closure you need. You don't need to lay blame to get past this. VIRGO Slow down and concentrate on this moment, not the past or the future. oroscope LIBRA Even though you are full of energy and ideas, don't go ploughing into something without giving a thought to others first. Giving them the chance to put their opinion forward and getting them onboard will make things go much more smoothly. SCORPIO There are lots of ways you can help right now which don't involve money. Giving your time and support can be just as important. In relationships listen more than you talk, otherwise you will end up getting the wrong end of the stick. SAGITTARIUS In order to move forward from the past you must completely forgive and forget. Stop letting it be part of your present and leave it behind once and for all. It has been long enough, now you need to move on with your dreams and goals. CAPRICORN Enthusiasm will make up for your lack of attention to detail in most cases. Everyone is willing to help and guide if you would only ask instead of struggling. Rekindle a friendship that has been neglected lately. AQUARIUS Although you do not care what other people think, it still doesn't hurt to ask their opinion. Discussions which you would rather leave will be forced on you, actually solving a lot of niggling issues before they get out of hand. PISCES Don't be told what you can't do by someone who is trying to bring you down. Keep those positive thoughts and go out and prove them wrong. Then rethink your friendship, maybe it is time to move on.

Well things should at least start to warm up and you will start to see your garden bouncing back into life as we enter spring. For those of you that regularly read Article supplied by Lee Charlesworth the article you will know that now is the season to prune properly, as the chance of cold weather is less likely. I always want you to prune a little later rather than earlier, as sometimes we can have a cold snap that can damage plants if pruned before or during winter. Secondly the response of the plants will always be quicker once they are drawing sap rather than pruning in the middle of winter.

I just wanted to touch on a recent news story about artificial grass on Sky news, about artificial football grass and its infill being potentially detrimental to health. I had already heard about the story as I have family living in Holland where they discovered the problem. As we are one of the largest suppliers and installers of artificial grass on the coast, I thought I would take the opportunity to set the record straight about our grasses. The problem has been discovered with the infill used (ground up old tyres) not the grass itself. We supply grass manufactured here in Spain using 100% non toxic materials and manufactured to ISO safety standards and when I say manufactured here, I mean we can go to the factory. There are a lot of companies who distribute grasses in Spain which are manufactured elsewhere. We are very proud of our selection of grasses and only use high quality product. There is of course a slightly higher cost than grass supplied by some of our competitors, as most of you know there are a lot of cheap grasses available on the market. The value of the grass is not only in the quality of the grass fibres themselves (which is only something a more trained eye may pick out) but naturally in the quality of the materials used, and the health and safety standards of continued on next page production.

None of our landscaping grasses require an infill and we only need a sand infill on some of our sports grasses. We actually have a football grass that was designed based around not needing an infill, so this problem doesn’t exist for us. The bottom line is as we all know you get what you pay for. Our product is not only safer, it is of a higher quality, and then when you add the value of our nearly fifteen years of experience dealing with artificial grass, you get a product that is delivered to you and installed in the correct manner. Plant Corner. This month I am going to have two plants of the month, I like to think I know of a lot of plants but as was pointed out to me by a great plantsman a long time ago now, it is impossible to know them all. So occasionally I get customers request plants that I don’t know, and it is always nice to find new plants especially when the results are so good. The first is just about passing its flowering period, but well worth getting for next year as it can have plenty of growing time now through the year. It is Pyrostegia Venusta or Flame Vine, as suggested by its name it is a climber that gets a wonderful plumage of orange flowers during the winter which is always worth their while at such a dull time of year. The second, which is more for Feb to March must be the Almond tree, Prunus Dulcis and Prunus Amygdallus. I would always recommend planting them in groups and normally toward the outer edges of the garden, so when it isn’t in season it’s not in your immediate vision, but when that blossom comes out it can really pop.

Amata makes buying real craft work easier About half a year ago, craft association Amata created a Virtual Craft Village (www.puebloartesano.es, in Spanish and English), to offer their members an alternative to all the craft markets that had been cancelled because of Covid. Ever since then, they have been improving their Village, moving in more workshops, tutorials and even virtual fairs. And now they have also introduced one single cart to do your shopping in all the different craft shops. The “normal” Amata fairs are well known, because the participants are only allowed to sell their own work, and most of them are at work in their stalls. To maintain this special atmosphere of craftsmen and artists at work, they started a Virtual Village, where all residents invite you into their workshops to share with you the love they have for their crafts. This makes their website into quite something more than a mere online store; it is a complete village with many delightful corners. They have made videos to show you the different techniques, tools and materials they use in their workshops. You can follow simple craft classes or visit the virtual fair. And, last but not least, you can buy original hand made products for very reasonable prices, because you buy straight from the artisan or artist. You can even place special orders! Up until now, there were no shopping carts in the village, if you wanted to buy from two different artisans, you had to go to their individual shops online, or even get in touch with them by phone or email. That has now been made much more simple. You can put all your purchases in one shopping cart and pay for everything together in one go. Taxes and Post & Package inside of Spain are included in the prices and if you spend over 50€ you don’t have to pay the 4€ handling fee. Of course, buying in an actual street market, where you can see and talk to the artisans in person, is much more fun, but at the moment a visit to the virtual craft village of Amata is the nearest thing, and you can go there whenever you want and wherever you live!

THE THEATRE IS FALLING DOWN. OH NO IT ISN´T – OH YES, IT IS!
By Benny Davis
Careline Theatre Company, primarily known for their comedy and pantomime productions, first saw the light of day in the spring of 1960 when they were invited by the Director of the former leper colony Fontilles, to use the sanatorium theatre. Although they spent countless hours and money on converting the premises from a virtually disused facility to a fully equipped modern theatre, their successful run eventually ended abruptly when the building was condemned as being structurally unsound and uninhabitable. In later years, it was discovered the decision had been incorrect.
During their initial period at Fontilles, the Company, under founder member John A. Booth and his wife June, staged their first pantomime, ‘Cinderella’. Its success was followed by other hit productions including ‘Stepping Out’, the story of eight ordinary females who attend tap dancing classes in a dingy North London church hall. Despite the students at first showing little co-ordination, they later develop a level of high skill and cohesiveness, ending in a show stopping tap dancing finale that involved months of hard-working rehearsals. Evidently the story was so convincing, one member of the audience actually congratulated the cast of learning to dance after only a couple of hours on stage. Another first for Careline during this period, was to transport the magic of Glyndebourne opera to Fontilles using the picturesque grounds for a picnic production, complete with candelabras and cava. After a short homeless period, they eventually settled for a disused cinema in Alcalali. Once again, they undertook the huge commitment of converting an old building into a modern, fully equipped theatre that included replacing a hole in the ground under the stage for a modern toilet. Unfortunately, just prior to opening, they discovered the theatre seating in storage was riddled with woodworm. After hasty discussions with Fontilles management, they received permission to transport their former seating into their new theatre, an operation that involved members frantically working round the clock until all was successfully re-installed. Since those heady days, Careline have gone from strength to strength with an average of three productions a year, which apart from their incredibly popular pantomime extravaganzas, have included classic comedies such as, ‘Allo Allo’, ‘Dad’s Army’, ‘Lady killers’ and ‘The Good Old Days’, a heart-warming tribute to those serving on both the home and front-line during WW2. The Company also encouraged local youth to attend acting courses formally with, ‘Carline Kids’ organised by professional actor, Lee Walker, and currently a dance and acting academy with professional dance teacher choreographer Suzanna Mace, and Candida Wright. Although small fees are charged for students, they are also auditioned for parts in the main productions where they perform for charity. Currently, Careline, as others in the world of entertainment, are in Covid-limbo with their January pantomime, ‘Sleeping Beauty’, complete with props, costumes, music, and a barrel-load of laughs, on hold until restrictions are lifted. Note: Careline have raised between 60/80,000 euros for charity. They are affiliated to a registered charity and managed by Candida Wright who received the MBE for her services to the community. Freemasons help Amigos In response to the request for help from a Valencian voluntary organisation, el Amigos de la Calle, the Freemasons of Valencia were quick to respond. The Valencian Provincial Charity Fund contributed five hundred euros. White River Lodge 153 and Mark Masons 1979 contributed over five hundred and fifty euros. Regeneration Lodge 132 contributed two hundred and fifty euros. Through Masons affiliated to Rotary International, the Rotary E-Club of Latin America contributed a further two hundred euros. The total donated was over one thousand five hundred euros and together with the volunteers of the NGO we made a purchase of food in the wholesale supermarket Family Cash, at special prices. The Amigos de la Calle (CIF G98305378) is a certified NGO of the Valencian community in charge of helping those who have nothing, and sleep on the streets of Valencia. With the arrival of the pandemic, the situation has worsened, with more than five hundred homeless people who are cared for by the organisation and around one hundred more who are in a precarious situation. On weekdays emergency deliveries are made to family homes, and on Sundays eight routes are made throughout the city, distributing food, warm clothes, blankets, sleeping bags and other items. The routes have specific stops in parks and squares, and in shelters such as bank tellers. The State provides some help to the homeless and the families but, given the magnitude of the situation with the pandemic, it is just not enough. However, the NGO does not receive state aid and is reliant on charitable donations.
U3A members beat the pandemic! By Communications Officer Ian Rogerson
Jávea U3A members might not be able to attend monthly general meetings because of Covid restrictions, but that doesn’t stop them getting together in other ways!
Our online presentations have proved so popular that there are more planned. The U3A’s Executive Committee have also been holding meetings online during the pandemic. While most of the U3A groups have had to suspend activities because of the coronavirus restrictions, some are continuing to operate online and via home participation, including Photography, run by Steven Staus, and Rummikubs, led by Krystyna Stfanczyk. For more information on Jávea U3A and details of how to join, visit the website u3ajavea.com.
Moftag takes Valentine's Day to their members
Moftag (Might Oaks from Tiny Acorns Grow), took Valentine's Day to 41 of their members last weekend. Gift packets were made up of chocolates, a tea bag and a smiley face magnet and a rhyme inside telling them to enjoy this treat and sit back, relax and drink to Moftag. The gift bags were delivered to each member's house as far as Moraira! Moftag is the longest running club in Calpe - 43 years this year and is a registered Charity. They focus on raising money for Calpe charities and also providing company and social events for their members many of whom are ladies living on their own. Despite the challenges that the Covid Pandemic has thrown at us all, Moftag has stayed in touch with all their members on a weekly basis via telephone calls. Even more importantly they managed to continue their fund raising despite not being able to hold the 2 fairs last year. Photos were taken of items for sale, orders were taken for homemade produce and emailed out to members and friends and even delivered to their homes. This enabled Moftag to donate over 1000€ to the Red Cross to help families buy school books and 800€ each to Cáritas and the Red Cross for food vouchers to be distributed to needy families in Calpe. They also gave Christmas Gifts to people in Los Boqueres care home who do not have families to bring gifts for The 3 Kings Celebration. If you would like to know more about Moftag please contact the president Jenny Godfrey, mobile 639 139 518.

THE AIRCREW ASSOCIATION COSTA BLANCA CELEBRATES THE 100TH BIRTHDAY OF THEIR PRESIDENT!
www.femalefocusonline.com
Squadron Leader (retired) Henry S Horth MBE AFC
The President of the Aircrew Association Costa Blanca, Henry Horth, reached his 100th Birthday on Tuesday, 26th January. The planned Celebratory lunch, at which Henry’s family and many Aircrew and other friends hoped to be present, had to be postponed until a later date, due to the recently imposed Covid 19 Virus restrictions. Having previously received a personal congratulatory card from Her Majesty The Queen, Henry was able to receive his Certificate of Achievement and birthday cards from the Association and other friends when they were delivered to him on his birthday, at Jávea Port, by the Aircrew Association Chairman, Max Maxwell. Henry served in the RAF for 34 years from March 1942 until January 1976. During his service he was based in Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, Iraq, Ghana Belgium, and the UK. For the majority of Henry’s service he was a Flying Instructor or fighter pilot. He received his AFC for particularly risky operational sorties during his tour in Hong Kong. He received his MBE for outstanding and valuable service whilst in Ghana. Henry flew many different aircraft types including: Tiger Moth, Harvard, Spitfire, Chipmunk, Oxford, Tempest, Fury, Mosquito, Hornet, Meteor, Vampire, Hunter, F86 Sabre, Heron, Beaver, Otter and a Hughes Helicopter. Henry says he was fortunate to have flown some of the cream of the pre-jet era, piston driven aircraft and then progressed to and flew a number of the finest of the early jet-age types! On his eventual retirement, having worked in real estate for six years after his retirement from the RAF, Henry and his wife, Anne, who he married in 1946, moved to live permanently in Javea in 1984. Sadly, Anne died in 1998. Henry is the proud father of 5 children and has 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren! Henry continues to live in Jávea and has been an active Member of the Aircrew Association since its early days in 1988. He has been its popular and much respected President for four years. The Association and Henry’s many friends have much delight and pleasure in acknowledging Henry’s 100th Birthday and look forward to many more! Photo by Jan Adams.
HELP International Benidorm recognises that there is a still an essential need for the food banks to be kept replenished, given the present restrictions. A sum of 1,125€ was presented to the BBBA (Benidorm's British Business Association-via the Facebook donation facility) who have tirelessly worked to keep it going since lockdown. A sum of 500€ was presented from the HELP organisation, the rest was from individual HELP volunteers. One of the generous donations was given by Andrea (HELP president), Dot and Carol; aka the ‘Golden Girls’ who celebrated a milestone birthday and instead of receiving gifts; requested cash donations. In total HELP has donated 2,925€ since the start of lockdown. HELP International volunteers still continue to reach out to vulnerable people, albeit in a limited capacity at the moment. We can be contacted on 607 387 040, via our Facebook page Help International Benidorm or by visiting our website https://www.helpbenidorm.org
