THE CONSTELLATION AQUARIUS AND YOUR FIRST TELESCOPE

T

his month I'll continue with our tour through the constellations of the zodiac, and then we'll be having a break from these for a while. I've had quite a lot of emails over the months about what telescope to buy, and it's not a simple subject so I think it's time I went into this properly. OK, Aquarius first, most people only know the name from horoscopes, but it's a really interesting area of the sky to look at, and easy to find at the moment. Unfortunately, there's not much for the naked eye star gazer to see, but even a small telescope will reveal some wonders. Find Aquarius by looking due south, you'll see Jupiter big and bright and at the moment it's on the right hand side of the constellation. Going straight up from Jupiter is a dimmish star, Sadalsud, a supergiant star, a class that has some of the biggest stars we know, if it weren't 1100 light years away it would be utterly spectacular. Going up again there is a beautiful planetary nebular called M2. Planetary nebulas are among my favourite objects, an expanding disc of gasses blown off when a star reaches the end of its life. There's another nebula in Aquarius, called the Saturn nebula, it's below and to the right of Jupiter. The expanding gasses that blew off when its star died have formed not just a disc, but an extension on each side that makes it look a bit like our ringed planet, it's well worth looking for.

TELESCOPES

Choosing your first telescope can be a rather daunting and confusing business, lots of terms and words you are not familiar with and it can be expensive. The most expensive telescopes are those that are bought, used once and then put away forever, just a waste of money. Common reasons for this are that the buyer either found it too difficult, or didn't know what to do once the 'scope was set up or was just very disappointed when they looked through it, probably at the moon. My aim over the next few months is to go into a little detail about telescopes, what's important, different types, what to expect from one, and of course, how much you'll need to spend. I will finish this month with a warning, please don't go out and buy one of those telescopes sometimes seen in major stores, usually white, sometimes with lots of impressive looking twiddly bits and a flimsy wooden tripod. They really aren't suitable for our hobby. I'm aware that I'm in print so I must be circumspect about what I say, so I'll let you guess at my true language to describe these. Next month I'll begin telling you about real telescopes, and you won't necessarily be spending my Group a fortune, so until then enjoy our clear autumn skies. e are all still experiencing changes as a result of BREXIT and here is a little bit more useful information regarding the changes that are occurring all the time, and this is regarding GB stickers for your car. All UK registered vehicles must now have a UK sticker to replace the GB sticker. If you have GB on the number plate, you will still need a UK sticker and this must be placed on the rear of the vehicle. Can I suggest that if you have not yet done this, do it immediately as it will save you a lot of bother, as I understand that the police are regularly pulling over UK plated vehicles.

I along with many, am feeling frustrated at the way Spanish banks are behaving. Some are on strike, which is totally unbelievable, whilst many are offering very restricted service due to lack of staff and there is the continuing process of closing of branches. I fully appreciate that we need banks for all financial transactions, however you do not need to go to them for house, car or life insurance. The after sales that you will receive will be practically non-existent and you will be on your own regarding a claim and also, do you really know what cover you have and are your documents in English? Then of course, there is the situation which I do not like at all – automatic renewal. Therefore please find the time to check your documents and the renewal date, taking into account that you have to give a month's notice, and come and talk to one of the ladies, or give us a call and we will explain the difference between our policies and the banks and assure you of the excellent after sales procedures. There is nothing more frustrating in having a query which you can't get answered and this of course, is unacceptable and will never happen in my company. ● For more information or a quotation, please call one of my offices, visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net or email info@jennifercunningham.net.

www.femalefocusonline.com Well what a beautiful autumn we have been enjoying. Although I should have grown out of it by now, I still love talking to my sister from our terrace whilst she, in the UK, is driving home from work in the rain. It does make me appreciate how fortunate we are here. This month we have two magazines hitting the streets in our area (2 more in Southern Costa Blanca), with the Female Focus magazine, and Issue 22 of the Marina Alta Focus on Professional Services, the Nº1 guide to businesses in our area. Both are packed with information which we hope you find useful in your everyday lives here. Please continue to support your local businesses and let them know you saw them in your favourite magazines. Thank you. Until next time, Lesley

he bay at El Portet, Moraira, was recently abuzz with yachts and dinghies. The reason: the Costa Blanca Yacht Association’s 15th Anniversary, which was actually last year, but celebrations were postponed due to Covid. Wednesday dawned sunny, with a nice breeze. Four members anchored their yachts off El Portet beach: S/Ys Poog, Bifrost, Jemila and TrickyD. The latter festooned with flags, bunting, plus blue and yellow balloons, the CBYA colours. The planned cardboard boat race didn’t happen, due to lack of adventurous sailors… so was postponed until next year. The Club owns four dinghies and a small catamaran, all of which were taken out by several people over the course of the day: swirling winds made for somewhat difficult conditions, but all participants enjoyed themselves. About 60 members came to watch and ordered tapas and drinks at Bar El Racó. First prize went to Richard Jones for the best dressed yacht, and prizes were also given for Best Helm to Monique Neyzen for catamarans, Fernando Moneta for Lasers, and James Heather for the 420. Everyone admired the splendid sunset and later the four yachts moored overnight along the sea wall in the Club Naútico Moraira. Day two, three TOMs, 28’ racing yachts from Real Club Naútico Calpe, were supposed to sail up to El Portet for a raft-up with the big yachts, but the elements conspired against them. There was hardly a breath of air, so even if they’d struggled to get there, without an engine, they may not have made it back that evening, so reluctantly this was cancelled. However, CBYA members continued to sail the dinghies and enjoyed the second day of this very social event. Anyone interested in sailing, yachts or motorboats, see www.cbya.org for more information. All welcome – especially if you own a boat!

The Coast of Death is normally a wild sea battering against high cliffs giving a feeling there is nothing between this remote corner of Europe and the New World but an enormous mass of water. Arriving in the town of Fisterra first go to the harbour. On some summer days the unusual can happen. Fishing boats come and go on a sea so calm that it is difficult to believe this is the untamed Costa da Morte (Coast of Death). Meander in a labyrinth of streets in this fishing village, pop into one of the many bars, listen to old seadogs telling their tales, enjoy a plateful of razor clams or any variety of local seafood.

A must for all who visit Cape Fisterra is its extraordinary lighthouse sitting at the westernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula on the coast of Galicia. Built in 1853 it is known world-wide for its importance in navigating around this Coast of Death. The octagonal tower, made of stone, measures 17 metres and its light, perched 138 meters above sea level, reaches 30 nautical miles. Filament lamps emit a flash every five seconds. ‘The cow of Fisterra’ is a foghorn. On days when the coast is covered in fog, it emits a low-pitched sound which can be heard for more than 25 kilometres. The Fisterre lighthouse is considered one of the most emblematic places in all of Galicia. An emotionally charged experience can be achieved by watching at the sun going down at World’s End, at a viewpoint close to the lighthouse. Even better is an evening cruise where the captain positions his boat 100 metres from the rocky shore underneath the lighthouse. seeking a second opinion

O

ver the years, the majority of our clients have made initial contact with us by way of referral. This is often seen as one of the best ways to do business as most referrals tend to come from existing satisfied customers. But what happens when an individual needs financial advice but has no referral to contact? How does an investor choose between one company or another? In truth, we (Logic) have generally done very little in the way of advertising compared to some of our competitors, preferring to keep a low profile and focus on our core strategy of providing an unrivalled level of service. This paid dividends for us in 2020 as we won a major European award for “Excellence in Client Service”. Our preference has always been to work on a smaller and more personal scale as we believe this is better suited to our family-run business model. Taking this approach has served us extremely well over time and we are fortunate to see our business continuing to expand year after year. However, the last year or so has been an eye opener for us as several clients called our office for the first time and pretty much said “we didn’t know you were here”. It soon became apparent that these clients were either seeking a second opinion on financial advice or were simply shopping around to compare one company with another. Many of the individuals would openly admit that they were speaking to other advisers and considering their options. Our response? Perfect! We actively encourage all clients to take this course of action and weigh up the pros and cons of engaging with different financial advice companies. Similar to general insurance, most IFAs will cover the same areas and have similar solutions available but the relationship you have with the adviser and the fees you pay them could vary significantly. Staff turnover rates, the size of the establishments and the organisation structure are all factors that should be taken into consideration and will contribute to your experience and the price you pay. We pride ourselves on being open, honest and transparent with all of our clients and are proud to be one of the most experienced and established companies here on the beautiful Costa Blanca. We also passionately believe that a comparison of companies will highlight the benefits of working with us at Logic and our unique selling points which set us apart from our competitors. Our message is simple; make sure you shop around when considering engaging with a Financial Adviser. The relationship you have with an adviser can potentially last for generations, so it is important to make the right choice!

CYCLING ON THE COSTA BLANCA GREENWAYS Article by Sarah Farrell - www.sarahswritestuff.com

Cyclists love the Costa Blanca for its 320 days of sunshine, little rainfall and fabulous routes from flat coastal paths to winding mountainous trails. You can enjoy peaceful cycling routes along Spain’s Vía Verdes or greenways created from disused railway lines for walkers and cyclists. Across Spain around 3,200 kilometres of old railway lines have already been converted into about 130 sustainable greenways. All the greenways are identified by signposts and their distinctive logo. In the Alicante province, you'll find Vía Verdes in Denia, Alcoy, Ibi, Maigmó, Torrevieja, and Biar. Here are a couple of our favourite routes.

Vía Verde Dénia The last train ran between Dénia and Gandia in 1974 and now part of the line has been turned into a beautiful, flat Vía Verde. Starting by the Natura garden centre in Dénia, the route cuts through orange groves and farms with gorgeous views over the Montgó. Great times to go are early morning and towards dusk, especially

for bird watchers. The path is 6.5 kilometres long and ends in El Vergel, although you can continue along the cycle lane to Pego to visit the wetlands where Bomba rice is cultivated. If you don’t want to complete the route, you can take a right turn about halfway along and head for the beaches at Las Marinas, Dénia.

Vía Verde Torrevieja Further south is another stunning, flat route. This Vía Verde is on the old Albatera-Torrevieja railway line and runs alongside Torrevieja salt lakes, one of which is pink and the other is blue. The lakes are home to thousands of flamingos and other wildfowl. The starting point is at the old Torrevieja station which has been landscaped with trees, benches and a kiosk for refreshments. Make time to visit the museums here to discover the history of the salt industry in Torrevieja and the habaneras museum paying tribute to the songs and Torrevieja's most prolific habaneras songwriter Ricardo Lafuente Aguado.

U3A Marina Baixa Celebrate 15th Anniversary

Saturday 16 October saw the celebration of their 15th Anniversary. Just under 50 members attended the event at the home of Joan and Bill Flint. Joan was Secretary of the Association for almost 11 years and this was the 10th event to have taken place in their garden. However, this year the event was organised by Hazel Layt, the Social and Events Co-ordinator, and with the willing hands of the Committee, the members enjoyed paella made by Hazel´s husband, Tony, and Treasurer Anne McGrath, provided a typical Valencian rice dish. After a period of changeable weather the day was blessed with sunshine and very little wind. Joan had made a cake for the occasion and this was shared, accompanied by a glass of cava. Everyone received a free raffle ticket on arrival with the winners receiving cash prizes. The afternoon concluded with a few taking to their feet to dance in the sunshine. A successful afternoon, made particularly special after such a long time with restrictions applying to social events. Thanks to everyone who made the event so successful. The next meeting of U3A Marina Baixa will take place on Monday 8 November at the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi at 11am. Non members are most welcome to attend. n Thursday 7th October over 100 members & guests of the Arts Society gathered together at Salones Canor Teulada, to celebrate and enjoy the first face to masked face of the Society’s Autumn presentations, post pandemic. David Glover, our Chair since the beginning of the year, welcomed ‘one & all’ to the day’s events with a refreshing cup of coffee. The programme of the day was laid out, and after a few housekeeping observations, two new Committee members; Linda Cleary and Mark Rackham were introduced to the meeting. Mark then took over to thank the artists and judges who took part in our recent painting competition to choose the frontispiece for our 2022 programme. He then went on to announce the names of the six finalists, whose works were on display. The winner was announced as Bob Sapsford for his painting ‘It’s Gin O’clock Somewhere’ and was awarded a splendid compendium of artists materials. Mark explained that all the finalists’ works have been produced as greetings cards, which are now available for purchase with all the proceeds going to our new Partners for 2022 C. E. Especial Gargasindi, a school in Calpe for children with learning difficulties. Our thanks go to Orba Dental Clinic for their sponsorship. Mark concluded by giving a brief synopsis of the important works carried out by the school, the types of children involved and how we the Society would endeavour to assist in their arts education. The main event of our programme was a presentation by Angela Chantry, an emotional explanation of how a Chapel was built on the Isle of Orkney by Italian prisoners of war from recycled everyday objects and donated supplies from local businesses. This presentation lifted our spirits and demanded a lengthy appreciation of applause. Finally all present retired to the upper gallery to enjoy a buffet lunch, provided by Gemma and her team at Salones Canor, and we all left later that afternoon feeling replenished and uplifted in mind and body. Our next presentation is on Thursday 4 November at 11am titled Valencia: Portrait of a City by: Peter Atkinson. A LIFE UNFOLDING by HOWARD WESTCOTT

BOOK SIGNING IN CALPE

It's here, it has arrived from the printers...a perfect Christmas present for old and young alike. "A Life Unfolding" by Howard Westcott is a semi autobiographical book about how the world has changed through his eyes in the 50s, 60s and 70s. The backdrop is Cardiff and the South Wales valleys where Howard grew up, and for readers of a certain age the book will evoke memories of an unashamedly nostalgic nature. For younger readers the book will provide an interesting insight into a simpler way of life, and the 'humble' ways in which families lived back then, before the Satellite TV, video on demand and social media that surround our lives today. The book is 12€ for the hardback, 10€ for the paperback, and is available from Polly's bookshop in Jávea Port, and from Liberia Europe Bookshop in Calpe, where Howard will be doing a book signing on Monday 8th November 5pm to 8pm (visit www.libreria-europa-calpe.com for directions.) Pictured are Howard with Tracy from Kawana Bar (formerly Bar Quo Vadis) in Jávea, where the book can also be purchased.

hat many of us do when looking to change our hairstyle is search the web for our age! ‘hair styles for the over 50s’ for example and then we pick something we like but will it suit us? To achieve a flattering hairstyle and even the right glasses, knowing your face shape can make all the difference to choosing the best look. There are many apps and online resources now available to identify face shapes, so you might want to try one of those, or study your features in a mirror without any makeup on, making sure all your hair is pulled back off your face so you can clearly see the outline of your face. Then, take note of the main areas; forehead, cheekbones, jawline. Determine the widest and narrowest parts of your face, look at your forehead - is it deep between your hairline and eyebrows or narrow, is your face long or short? Then look at your profile; the shape of your nose and chin for example, all these factors will help you work out your face shape. It is strange how we see ourselves most days in a mirror but don’t really study the shape and features, could we describe ourselves to someone else to draw? Remember changes in weight and aging can change our face shape so don’t presume your face is the same shape it was. Remember to focus on the outline of your face, the angles and curves, or better still discuss it with your hairdresser.

A solution for ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION Erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence is when there is a persistent inability of getting and keeping an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. Ongoing ED problems are common and can cause lack of sexual desire which in turn can affect self-confidence creating relationship problems. Men from the age of 40 years commonly suffer in silence with ED due to being embarrassed. Problems getting or keeping an erection can also be a sign of an underlying health condition that needs treatment. Other common causes can be stress, anxiety, tiredness, overweight, depression or the excessive intake of alcohol. Conditions also associated with ED are diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, raised cholesterol and side effects from medication.

Extracorporeal Shock wave Therapy (ESWT), is a clinically proven non-invasive treatment which works by producing a painless microtrauma in the way of shockwaves to the penis area enhancing the generation of new arteries, thus improving the blood circulation allowing for an erection to occur. Daily exercise and a healthy diet plan are also recommended when taking the treatment. If you are suffering with anxiety and depression seek advice from your GP to refer you to a Psychologist to talk through any underlying problems.

members on the move again!

ávea U3A’s Spanish Culture & Cuisine group members took to the road again for the first time since January 2020 – returning to some sort of normality after the pandemic hit. Group leaders Angela Chantry and Tony Dearie organised and led the trip, which they called ‘Paradores & Palaces’. Forty-eight members of the group were delighted to be travelling once again, spending 5 days visiting Almansa, Albacete, Ruidera Lakes Nature Reserve, Toledo, La Granja and San Clemente. Highlight of the tour was the Puy du Fou show, the biggest in Spain – and the U3A group had the best seats in the house, in the centre on the first few rows! From the kingdom of Recaredo to the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, from the discovery of America to the arrival of the railway, the audience was transported through 1,500 years of history, performed by 200 actors and horse riders, accompanied by special effects on an immense 5-hectare stage. “El Sueño de Toledo” certainly was spectacular! Group leaders Angela and Tony along with U3A members are now looking forward to future trips. Visit the website www.u3ajavea.com for details of U3A activities.

our ARIES Now is the time to start planting seeds in order to move forward knowing that they will be established in the future, just when you need them to be. Don't leave people behind who are important to you, spend time to bring them along with you, even if it is at a slower pace than you would like. TAURUS If you are a calm natured bull, you may be feeling left behind when others appear to be having so much fun. Just turning things up a notch will bring you the excitement you are looking for - be careful though not to go too far. GEMINI With the power struggles going on around you, it is time to focus on the quality of your daily life. Making changes now will put you in a good place when challenges come your way. CANCER Take responsibility of yourself, be more disciplined and more loving to yourself, and stop looking for others to be responsible for your well being. You have abandoned your own needs for long enough. LEO Concentrating on a solo project, maybe within your own home, will give you time for reflection. Friction in the family needs to be smoothed over and with this time for thought you will find a solution where everyone can move forward without losing face. VIRGO By concentrating on the little things you are missing the beauty of everyday. Enjoy the sunrise, live more for the moment and let the past be a lesson and not a burden to carry round with you any longer.

oroscope LIBRA You are reaping the rewards of all the hard work and planning as everything is falling into place. Others want to share in your success, but make sure they are doing it for the right reasons before you bring them into the team. SCORPIO Focusing on your passion is the most important thing right now. You have had enough distractions and excuses, and now you just need to get on with it. Ask people to give you the space and support you need and they will understand your actions. SAGITTARIUS Needing to ask for help is not a sign of weakness but one of great strength. With so much on your plate between now and the end of the year, take all the support you can. CAPRICORN Make sure everyone is pulling their weight and not leaving it all to the rest. Some subtle boundary setting and delegation will make sure everyone knows what is expected from them. AQUARIUS Your individuality can sometimes cause conflict, but can also bring some original ideas to the table. Keep these ideas flowing, not all will be taken on board but that should not stop you from sharing them. PISCES You feel you are really coming into your own, discovering so much more about yourself now you are not so judgemental. Although this has meant, and means leaving some things and people behind, you need to move forward and embrace new experiences and friends.

Valor chocolates made on the Costa Blanca

Whilst they're stockpiling tins of Quality Street in the UK, we have a far tastier choccie alternative produced right here on the Costa Blanca - Valor. Valor chocolate has been produced on the Costa Blanca for more than 140 years. Its history dates back to 1881 when Valeriano López Lloret founded the artisanal chocolate production to run alongside the family farm. Word soon spread about how delicious the chocolates were and business boomed. The family bought the factory in Villajoyosa in 1964 to keep up with demand. Today the distinctive green colour of Valor can be seen in many countries worldwide including many European countries, the USA, Argentina and Japan as well as online. In the Alicante region, Valor shops and cafes can be found in Dénia, Altea, Villajoyosa, Benidorm, Alicante, Santa Pola and Torrevieja. The cafes have a range of products including thick hot chocolate with churros and that firm favourite with Alicantinians (and Female Focus!) blanco y negro - iced coffee with ice-cream. Valor’s appeal can be summed up in one word: quality. Valor uses the finest cocoa beans from around the world to produce the best chocolate. In the UK, chocolate must have at least 20% cocoa solids while in the US it can be as low as 10%. Valor chocolates have at least 35% cocoa solids to give a rich, luxurious flavour. Not only is it delicious, but a little of what you fancy does you good too. How is chocolate - in moderation - good for you? ● The higher the cocoa content the better. Cocoa beans are packed with healthy flavonoids, which are rich in antioxidant activity and help ward off toxins. Dark chocolate has more flavonoids than milk or white chocolate. ● Drinking two cups of hot chocolate a day may help to keep the brain healthy and prevent memory decline, according to a study by Harvard Medical School scientists. ● Chocolate can reduce the risk of heart disease, according to a study by the British Medical Journal ● Canadian scientists showed people who eat chocolate were up to 22% less likely to have a stroke. Costa Blanca craft beers to try

Female Focus Magazine October 2021

Meeting friends for a few cold beers after work, in the evenings or at weekends is a great Spanish tradition. Did you realise about 90% of the beer drunk in Spain is brewed domestically? Mahou, San Miguel, Estrella Galicia, Cruzcampo and Amstel are popular beers in Spain. But now demand is growing for microbreweries producing quality craft beers, often made with interesting local ingredients such as horchata and nispero. Here are some of our favourite craft beers to try on the Costa Blanca. Cervezas Althaia in Altea Althaia is believed to be the ancient name for Altea and is a Greek word meaning 'I heal'. Althaia brewery must have one of the most romantic histories. Mayte came to Alicante to continue her professional work in the world of wine when she met Jorge. When tasting Jorge's beers, he revealed his dream was to make a living doing what he liked the most - brewing beer. The couple, who were very passionate about the product, didn't think twice about embarking on a career as craft brewers. They now produce around a dozen ales including IPA, pale ale, lager, white beer, stout, pumpkin ale and gluten-free beer. They have also won many awards including silver in the Barcelona Beer Challenge 2021 and Gold in the CICA International Artesanal Beer Competitition 2021. Brouwhoeve artisanal brewery and distillery in Benissa Brouwhoeve's mission is to reinvent traditional tastes. These quality beers are brimming with lip-smacking taste sensations. Not only can you taste the award-winning beers but you can also become a brewer at a workshop at the Benissa brewery. Find out how to brew beer the old-fashioned way on a journey through the complete beer-making process. Alternatively, you can book a guided tour with beer tasting or gin tasting as Brouwhoeve also produces award-winning artisanal gins. Cervecería de la Marina Alta in Dénia Patrizia from Milan and Georges from Brussels are creating a beer culture sensation in the Marina Alta. They wanted to honour their adopted home by creating 100% craft beers using lcoal ingredients. Their beer labels are a work of art to complement the fine beers including a light lager-type beer, a Pilsner style and a pale lager-style with tequila flavour. You can try the beers for yourself at La Abadía in Calle Colón 7, Dénia, or various places on the Costa Blanca including the Mercat Del Riu Rau in Jesús Pobre, Vins i Més in Jávea and El Xato Gastrotaberna in Beniarbeig. Amber brewery in Torrevieja A favourite spot for lunch and dinner accompanied by craft beers brewed on the premises is at Amber Brewery bar and restaurant by the sea in Torrevieja. We can highly recommend the tasting collection of all four beers - Number One unfiltered beer, Trigal wheat beer, Perla Negra black beer and the Special Beer. Otherwise, ask which beer goes best with your meal as the restaurant has a good selection of Spanish, German and European dishes. If you can’t get to Torrevieja, you can try Amber beers at its restaurant in Calle Castaños in the centre of Alicante.

Traditional Christmas Dinner

starts at The Bacon Joint No matter how long you’ve been in Spain, some traditions are important. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a traditional Christmas Dinner, and that means Turkey, Gammons, Pigs in Blankets and all the trimmings. At the Bacon Joint, we can’t help you with the trimmings, but we can supply the very best turkeys and Christmas meats. We’re a traditional butcher based in Calle Delfin in Calpe. We’ve literally decades of experience and have been helping you make the most of Christmas here in Spain for longer than we can remember. A lot of people say “but it’s just the two of us”. No problem, simply buy a turkey crown. The very best of a turkey breast, easy to cook and you don’t have to eat turkey for weeks after! Another favourite is a boiled gammon. No problem, we’ve got you covered. To avoid disappointment, order early by calling The Bacon Joint on 96 583 0521.

Walk Your Way Well

Page 22

by Niamh O'Sheehan

I'm so excited to help organise another fundraiser walk in November in Jávea. You're all gonna wanna support this one! It's a lovely event in collaboration with Cancer Care Jávea. But, before I get stuck into telling you about that, I must chat a little about some important walking stuff! While putting the event together I decided to dig deeper into the fascinating field of "exercise oncology". As the regular FF readers know, I've long been spouting about the direct relationship between Walking and Wellness. Lifestyle medicine is rapidly becoming the hottest topic in the wellness arena and I vouch for it first hand. Embracing good nutrition, quitting toxic habits and incorporating exercise into my life has been a true game changer on numerous levels. I have been heartened recently to find so much substantiated support for this non pharmaceutical method of caring for yourself. We have much more control than we realise. In short, research confirms that walking regularly can help you not just SURVIVE but THRIVE during and after cancer. The evidence keeps rolling in! Having walking as a form of fitness in your armoury can be one of your most important cancer treatments. For anyone dealing with a diagnosis or in recovery, that's great news. Experts also confirm that regular walking can help PREVENT cancer by reducing inflammation, keeping weight under control, and boosting the immune system. It all makes sense right? In the "olden days" doctors typically advised their cancer patients to rest and avoid physical activity. However, over the past twenty years the use of exercise in cancer treatment and recovery has grown exponentially, especially in the last decade. There is significant evidence to tell us, with confidence, that those living with and beyond cancer will benefit from being more physically active. Oncologists are at the point in the evolution of this field where they can dose exercise precisely, just as we do with drugs, to address several cancer-related health outcomes. And it is most common to be instructed to go for walks! An exercise program consisting of a half hour of aerobic exercise three times weekly is sufficient to improve anxiety, depression, fatigue, quality of life, and physical function in cancer survivors. That's extremely motivational to those who want to take more control and incorporate lifestyle medicine into their treatment plan. And so, there's all manner of good reasons why Cancer Care Jávea have decided a WALKING event is a perfect way to create awareness and raise funds for the amazing Lynwen Nurses. This team of four professional nurses work tirelessly with cancer patients in our area. They offer support, dignity, care and solace to so many of our community in the difficult challenges cancer brings. This easy 5km FULL MOON WALK by the sea will be great fun. It's suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Your registration fee goes directly to support the amazing cause. Keep fit, have fun AND help others all in the one evening! The 10€ registration should be made in advance to secure your place and you can pay directly at the Cancer Care charity shop in La Plaza or Jávea Park. You can also pay with PayPal cancercarejavea@outlook.com or on the website www.cancercarejavea.org. Don't forget to include your name and "Full Moon Walk". Please don't hesitate to give me a call if you have any questions +34 676 507 791. I can't wait to join you in this great opportunity to Walk Your Way Well.

JÁVEA’S CASA DEL CABLE FROM HUMBLE TELEGRAPH OUTPOST TO ICONIC EXHIBITION HALL by Rhona Wells - rhonawells@hotmail.com The mid 1850s were the heyday of worldwide underwater telegraphic communication. Around 150 years ago the ground breaking new way of keeping in touch with the rest of the world was regarded as something of a miracle. In 1854, the first transatlantic cable, stretching over two thousand miles and frequently at depths of more than two miles, was laid between Britain and America. In the Arabian Peninsula in the 1860s, the British Army were installing a telegraphic link between India and Britain. Telegraph Island in Northern Oman - was the location of a British repeater station used to boost telegraphic messages along the Persian Gulf submarine cable. It was not an easy posting for the operators, with the severe summer heat and hostility of local tribes making life extremely uncomfortable. Because of this, the island is, according to some sources, where the expression "go round the bend" comes from, a reference to the heat that made British officers desperate to return to civilization, which meant a voyage around the bend in the Strait of Hormuz back to India. Meanwhile in Spain, after lengthy studies, the beautiful bay of Jávea was chosen as the most suitable location for a telegraph station to link mainland Spain with the Balearic Islands. Up to that point, the urban landscape of the Aduanas de la Mar neighborhood had been defined by raisin warehouses and the homes of local fishermen. In 1860, when the wiring works began, the building, which instantly became known as La Casa del Cable was created to house the telegraph station that would link the Peninsula with Ibiza by means of a 113 km long submarine cable. The critical importance of the station as a telegraphic link with the islands made it necessary for the military to be brought in to guard security and ensure the free flow of telegraphic communication. The original structure of the building was built to a square plan, measuring just over nine metres on each side, with two floors and a pitched roof. Over the years, a number of changes have been made, including the adaption of the original four rough columns that support the terrace and form the naya that gives the building its unique character. There are still elements of the original telegraph office on display in the gallery, including the original telecommunication table that was in the old Cable House. Between the last quarter of the 19th century and during the first decade of the 20th,the Casa del Cable also doubled as a chapel, where religious services were celebrated by members of the local fishing community and where a statue, to the image of Our Lady of Loreto was treasured; it is now in the Iglesia de Nuestra Seňora de Loreto (Church of our Lady of Loreto). After some remodeling in the 20th century, the building became a municipal exhibition hall. Its history and those original rough stone pillars have helped make it one of the most iconic exhibition venues in the area, much in demand from both local and international artists wishing to show off their work in an unusual space. The next exhibition at Casa del Cable, scheduled for November, will mark the 125th anniversary of the first recorded visit of celebrated Spanish artist Joaquín Sorolla to Jávea. 'Sorolla in Paradise', will consist of around 60 photographs taken by the artist himself featuring scenes of Jávea, the town that inspired so many of his internationally acclaimed paintings. The Casa del Cable is located on Avenida Marina Española, in the port of Jávea; contact number 96 579 65 31; information on the travelling exhibitions can be followed at: http://artxabia.com/site/salas/.

The Aircrew Association Costa Blanca celebrates the 80th anniversary of the formation of a key branch of the RAF The Air Engineer Branch

Life Vice President Peter Langley DFC, Chairman Max Maxwell MBE and fellow Members of the Aircrew Association Costa Blanca celebrated the 80th Anniversary of the formation of the Engineer Branch of the RAF on Wednesday, 13th October with a lunch at the El Gaucho Restaurant in Jávea. The Association’s Celebration was privileged to be attended by the two surviving former Air Engineer Branch Members of the Association, John Othen (left of picture) and Peter Johnson (right of picture). During the lunch and after a highly appropriate grace, written for the occasion and given by Peter Langley, John Othen gave an illuminating and much appreciated talk on the history of the Air Engineer Branch. Later, following a popular raffle, including as prizes, two Anniversary mementos donated by John Othen: an 80th Anniversary Mug and an 80th Anniversary tea towel showing all of the RAF aircraft that included Air Engineers in their crews, Peter Johnson proposed the toast to the Air Engineer Branch. Peter Langley then closed the celebration with the Aircrew Toast, To Absent Friends and Fellow Aircrew. Another memorable and significant occasion in the Aircrew Association’s diary, following soon after the Association’s Commemoration of the Battle of Britain in September. If any reader wishes to know more about the Aircrew Association Costa Blanca, please call: 966 495 228.

ATTENTION ALL POOL OWNERS Apex Pool Covers have news for you!

You’ve probably asked yourself about getting a pool cover but have always put it off. We understand, it seems like a big cost just to tuck away your pool for the winter. But if no-one’s explained the benefits, you don’t know what you’re missing out on. Apex Pool Covers have been manufacturing pool covers right here on the Costa Blanca for a number of years. We use highly respected SOL+GUARD from Geo Bubble products. We chose these products simply because after extensive research, we know this is absolutely the best product on the market. A SENSORY GARDEN, BY INSPIRING PEOPLE - FOR AMAZING PEOPLE As many of you will realise, I have to write these articles in advance so something that is current for me is probably a minimum of two to three weeks old by the time you read it.

Article supplied by Lee Charlesworth Over the last year or so I have been involved with helping to create a garden at the occupational centre in La Xara, it was obviously held up by Covid which has meant it was slow to get going. Luckily the garden came to life during the end of September and early October with many people giving up their personal time and effort and lot more helping with donations. I am used to creating gardens all the time and sometimes it can be a little under whelming for me as I am so used to doing it. It's not that I am not happy with the gardens I create, I am always very happy with my gardens and the way the designs work. It's just it can be a numbness that occurs from being so involved with something. But if there is always one thing I always do appreciate, it's just the simple fact of having somewhere, something, that didn’t exist before. This really hit me as we were coming to a finish on the garden, I know we have created something that others will be able to enjoy. The space at the occupational centre was to put it mildly, a nothing of a space, bland, boring, uninspiring, open to the sun. It was quite frankly tragic. Oscar, the inspiring young man who raised funds to create the garden, and his mum Niamh who managed the entire project, were amazing. Without their help and input nothing would have happened. Their drive and will to want to do something creative and amazing for the people who use the occupational centre was fantastic and I would personally like to thank them for their work. I would love to list everyone who helped to build and put the garden together.

Page 29 It really goes to show if every person just helps a little, it adds up to a lot. My job in comparison was simple, I know how people use spaces and what the spaces need to achieve for them, but to see the completed garden at the opening ceremony was brilliant. And at long last they have a space that is green, tranquil, colourful and full of sensory requirements. A place to sit, relax and take in some fresh air, something that simply wasn’t available to them before. For me it just reminds me of what I do and its validity, it shows me how much gardens can give you and help with your well-being. Everyone needs a garden in their life. They are captivating, relaxing and help nature thrive. No matter what type of garden you may want style wise, they all achieve the same thing and that thing is something very special. ● For more information please give us a call on 696 283 704, email info@charlesworthgardens.com or visit www.charlesworthgardens.com, www.artificial-grass-spain.com

Cuidando a Calpe, Tienda la Caridad – Caring for Calpe. Charity Shop.

We are pleased to announce that we have launched our new charity shop in Calpe. Due to changes in the structure of our organisation and to comply with all the latest rules and regulations that we must adhere to, we have formed our new organisation. We are located in the premises of the Original Charity Shop, Galerias Azul Mar, Av. Gabriel Miró, 9, 03710 Calpe, Alicante. Ana Sala, Mayoress of Calpe, kindly attended the opening ceremony to cut the ribbon and officially open the shop. In attendance were local councillors and representatives of the organisations that we support. We made donations to Cruz Roja and Caritas of 1500 euros each to enable them to provide essential services of food and support to those most vulnerable in our local community of Calpe. Our dedicated amazing team of volunteers will continue the fantastic work and achievements of our predecessors, who have worked tirelessly for nearly over 20 years raising funds in excess of 325,000 euros, donating funds that have benefited good causes within our local community. Our mission is to continue to support our local community and to build from the foundation that the Charity Shop of Calpe has worked so hard to achieve. We will help those in need, and with the current crisis because of the Pandemic, our work has never been more important. We would like to offer a heartfelt thanks for the donations from our wonderful supporters and our ever loyal customers. These are challenging and uncertain times, but we feel confident that as a charitable organisation and as a community, we can get through this together; with continued public donations of good quality clothes, bric-à-brac and household items and the support of our many customers. We will provide a Covid safe shopping experience whilst raising funds for local causes and those most affected by the pandemic.

A successful Macmillan/Jávea Cancer Re-opening of the Valleys Care event for Sue & Pat held at International Bridge and Social Club Thirty-four members attended when the Valleys International Bridge and Social Club held their first weekly bridge game last Thursday after nearly 18 months of interruptions due to Covid. Brenda Russell, President of the club, said how delighted she was to see so many members return after such a long break. The meeting was held at Jaleo Restaurant between Pedregeur and Benidoleig. To celebrate the occasion the members were treated to tapas and cava before knuckling down to the ‘serious’ business of playing bridge. “The Valleys Bridge Club” tries to strike a balance between playing competitive bridge and meeting for social events. New members are always welcome. Details of the club can be found online at www.bridgewebs.com/valleysinternationalsocial/.

Attlee’s Moonlighters, Moraira

On 25 September Sue & Pat Donovan had another Macmillan Cancer Support event in Moraira, and raised 4815€, 1000€ of which will be donated to Jávea Cancer Care. Attie & Lee from Attlee’s Moonlighters agreed to hold the event in their bar/restaurant and supplied food and first drink for 10€, half of which was donated to Macmillan. This makes a grand total of about 30000€ collected in the past seven years. Lee performed at his best as the auctioneer and live music was kindly performed by Dave Peachey and Graham Sherin. Muku from the Kathmandu Indian restaurant in Moraira donated 400€ following a dinner organised by Sue & Pat in aid of the charity, which was well attended and enjoyed by all. The number of raffle prizes and auction items which had been kindly donated by local businesses, restaurants and friends etc was amazing. We would like to thank our many friends who helped out on the day – without them the event could not have happened.

HELP International Denia helping Project 4 All

'Something great can come from a modest beginning' and that is certainly the case here. Arne Soeten took it upon himself to feed some of the homeless in his community and was joined by others with the same compassion and empathy for the plight of the vulnerable in our society. The project has now gone from strength to strength and long may it continue! The picture shows some of HELP volunteers Maggie Slane (secretary), Garry Illston (equipment co-ordinator) and Andrea Hope (President), presenting a donation to this absolutely amazing charity Project 4 All. Now’s the time to sell your property

Estate agents across the Costa Blanca are drawing up waiting lists of clients looking to buy property. So many people are willing to invest in either a permanent home or holiday home, agents are running out of suitable properties. Despite the pandemic and Brexit, the Costa Blanca remains a very attractive proposition both for the domestic market - people living in the cities of Madrid and Valencia invest in holiday homes here - and overseas, particularly people from North Europe, Scandinavia and Russia. For many people, the reasons for wanting to move to the Costa Blanca are the same as always: ● 320 days of sunshine each year and low rainfall ● Gorgeous coastline from picturesque bays to family-friendly sandy beaches ● Fabulous choice of resorts to live in from coastal towns to inland villages amid the mountains ● Superb choice of properties from modern Ibiza-style villas to traditional Spanish townhouses ● Better quality of life and lower cost of living than many northern and western European countries However, demand is growing because many people are looking for a bolthole out of the cities. During the pandemic when families were cooped up indoors, they realised how much they needed outside space, such as a large terrace or garden. These are high on the wish list when they are seeking properties on the Costa Blanca. If you are thinking of selling your property on the Costa Blanca, please get in touch with one or more of the trusted estate agents advertising in this edition. It is very likely they already have people lined up who are willing to buy a property like yours. Article by Sarah Farrell - www.sarahswritestuff.com
