What your eyes can reveal about your health MILLIONS of people have missed out on vital eye tests during lockdown, potentially putting their eyesight and wider health at risk, warn Specsavers Ópticas in the lead up to World Sight Day on October 8th.
Louise Stone, store director of Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea and Calpe, says: ‘Fifty percent of sight loss is avoidable with early detection, however, during the pandemic many people may not have had access to these diagnostic tests. Not only does this mean their eyesight is at risk but potentially other aspects of their health too. ‘That’s because while there are several changes we may notice in our vision which could be a sign of a wider health condition, there are also some things that can only be detected during an eye test. ‘It is important to make an appointment with your optometrist if you are seeing certain things, such as red spots on the front of your eyes, persistent floaters, or notice changes with your eyes such as blurred vision, or yellowing of the eyes. These things can denote health issues from high blood pressure and cholesterol, to liver issues or diabetic retinopathy.
‘However, it is also important to keep up your regular eye checks – even if you don’t think there is anything wrong with your vision – because something could be happening which you are completely unaware of.’ For World Sight Day, Specsavers Ópticas has shared four conditions that can be detected during an eye test to support the IAPB’s mission to ask people to ‘pledge to take an eye exam – and encourage others to do the same’ this October: Glaucoma - Glaucoma is often symptomless as it develops so gradually. That’s why it is often referred to as the silent thief of sight. It is one of the leading causes of blindness, however, if it is identified in its early stages it can be successfully managed. Regular eye examinations are key to detecting it. Diabetic retinopathy - In its early stages diabetic retinopathy usually doesn’t pose any noticeable symptoms, so an eye test can pick it up before you do. As the condition affects small blood vessels in the eye, damaging the retina, your optometrist can look for early characteristic changes, such as tiny leaks from these damaged vessels. High blood pressure - During an eye test, your optometrist might spot signs of high blood pressure, through observing the eye’s blood vessels to see if they have narrowed or started leaking. Tumours - While an eye test can look for any cancers of the eye such as melanomas, it will sometimes reveal signs of possible brain tumours. Swelling in the optic nerves can be visible during an eye test and can sometimes indicate that a brain tumour is present. ● For more information or to request an appointment at your local store, visit www.specsavers.es

What factors separate one adviser from another?
What should investors be looking out for when engaging with a financial adviser?
I
am sure many of us will have found ourselves in a situation where we have gone ahead with the first piece of advice a specialist recommends to us, especially if they are in a field which we are not overly familiar with. However, sometimes it pays to seek a second opinion. In our industry as financial advisers, we come across many clients who presume that all advisers do exactly the same job on exactly the same terms. In reality, this is not the case. Although many advisers have the same solutions available to them, some might be restricted in the products they can offer, and others may favour one product over another at outset. Does this mean that they are finding the best and most suitable solution for your needs? Perhaps not. Other areas where advice companies can also differ are; Charges: Even if different advisers recommend the same product to you, this does not automatically mean it will cost you the same amount. We know from experience that there is a significant difference in the amounts each adviser will charge a client so it is definitely worth making sure you fully understand all of the fees. Regulation: The majority of firms will be regulated via some jurisdiction, but it is always worth checking you know exactly where. It will protect you as an investor. Qualifications: There is currently no “minimum standard” here in Spain like there is in the UK, but qualifications highlight credentials and knowledge. In the UK, the minimum standard to
advise clients is Diploma status (level 4) but a lot of advisers in Spain have not reached this level. Personality & Trust: A financial adviser, client/ family relationship should be built for the long-term. It is therefore important to really feel comfortable with the adviser you are dealing with. If you sit down with an adviser and they seem reluctant to let you seek a second opinion, or you feel rushed into making a decision, it is probably because the adviser knows that they might come out as second best in at least one of the categories mentioned above. At Logic, we never shy away from clients who want to “shop around”. To the contrary, we actively encourage it as we know it will showcase the benefits of choosing our company. We have been told by a number of our existing clients that you cannot underestimate the benefits of working with a family run business. Aside from the level of trust this provides, it is also noticeable how clients warm to the fact that we treat them as “our clients” as opposed to “his” or “her” client, which they may have experienced in the past. Next time you have a financial concern, why not get in contact with us to discover the difference?

Botox treatment in Jávea for you today
W
Female Focus Magazine October 2020
hen we think of Botox we think of helping the upper part of the face, but many people don’t realise that Botox injections used strategically and artfully by specialists can slim the jaw, lift the bottom part of the face, stop neck wrinkles, lift the tip of the nose, treat an orange peel chin, as well as migraines and neck pain. Chin Dimpling Many people have chin dimpling, which is often referred to as “orange peel chin”. Dimples result from repetitive movements of the underlying mentalis muscle over time. A few strategically placed injections of Botox in the chin area can decrease or eliminate chin dimpling. The treatment leads to a forced relaxation of the muscle in the chin and can smooth out the dimpling very effectively. Lifting the nose tip By injecting a small amount of Botox cosmetic under the nose, Botox can give the top lip a “lifted” appearance and stop the nose from curving down as we smile producing a more streamlined profile view. Jawline Slimming and lifting of the lower face Botox is an effective treatment for reducing a prominent or asymmetric jaw line caused by enlarged muscles. The muscles along the posterior jaw are used to chew and clench the teeth, and can become enlarged when the teeth are clenched while sleeping. Botox treatment reduces the size of the muscles injected, thereby smoothing the facial contour. Treatment of bruxism, neck pain and migraine. Constant clenching of the jaw causes the masseter muscle in the jaw to enlarge and trains it to become very strong much like any muscle in the body. People who build up tension in their jaw often suffer from neck pain, toothache, fracture teeth periodically and wear a night time appliance. 3-4 monthly Botox injections in the jaw will weaken the masseter muscles thus treating the clenching and alleviate tension and neck pain. It will also prevent the need to wear and uncomfortable night time appliances by breaking the clenching habit. Treatment of migraines with Botox Botox administered to the frown lines and forehead can also be used to treat migraines. Migraines are often caused by constant frowning. Botox will prevent you from frowning unconsciously and retrain the muscles thus alleviating debilitating tension and reducing headaches and migraines. Neck Bands As we age, certain dynamic muscles in the neck can become more prominent, often causing wrinkles, lines and an aged appearance. Fortunately, Botox helps relax these hyperactive muscles which gives the neck with a more youthful and tighter appearance. At Zen Smile Spa we specialise in Botox for neck wrinkles. How Does Botox for the Neck Work? When injected into the vertical bands of the neck, Botox can relax the dynamic muscles, making them less prominent, and resulting in a smoother, younger looking neck. The results can generally last 4-6 months. The procedure, as with any Botox treatment, can be repeated when the results begin to wear off.

O
ur feet are probably something we don’t give much thought to, but good foot health is vital for mobility and quality of life. As we get older, maintaining healthy nails and skin can avoid pain and put a spring back into our step.
KEEP YOUR FEET HEATLHY
Over the years, unsuitable footwear, badly cuts nails, fungal infections and trauma can lead to issues with our feet that, at best, can be unsightly and, at worst, a high-risk infection. For people with underlying systemic health conditions, such as diabetes, it’s vital to have regular checks and foot care treatments to avoid more serious complications. Common foot problems ● Calluses ● Corns ● Bunions ● In growing toenails ● Nail bed trauma ● Thickened toenails ● Circulatory and nerve damage ● Fungal infection ● Verruca’s What does a foot health practitioner do? As a trained foot health professional, I start by taking the client’s medical history before completing a full examination of the lower limbs. With the feet being at our extremities, they can be the first to present symptoms of circulatory and nerve damage so, as part of my foot care treatment, I perform a neurovascular assessment. Nails are correctly trimmed and filed, helping to avoid them growing into the surrounding skin. Thickened nails, which are common with the ageing process or the result of trauma or fungal invasion, can be safely burred down to improve their look. Callus and corns are the result of the body producing excess skin as a reaction to mechanical stress. I can remove these and pad areas to offload the pain and provide advice on suitable footwear. Soulmate Foot Care Having attained a university accredited diploma in foot health from the SMAE institute in Maidenhead, I offer a mobile service at your home in the North Costa Blanca area. I have full professional indemnity insurance and DBS certificate. I take health care infections very seriously. As such, I follow strict hygiene protocols, sterilising all equipment in an autoclave prior to appointments. During treatment I use a COVID-19 screen and full PPE. ● To make an appointment, call 692 031 849 or contact me through my Facebook page @soulmatefootcare.

Varicose veins
V
aricose veins are swollen, bulging enlarged veins that occur on the legs and feet and are generally a bluish purple in colour. Some of the symptoms you may have when suffering with varicose veins are aching, heavy legs and swollen feet and ankles. There are various procedures that can be used to remove them. Firstly the VenaSeal system is a non-thermal, non-sclerosant procedure that uses a specially formulated medical adhesive to close the varicose vein; there is no need for the use of anaesthesia.
Varicose Vein
Venaseal
A syringe filled with a medical adhesive is inserted into the VenaSeal dispensing gun which is attached to a catheter, this is then inserted into the vein under the guidance of an ultrasound. A series of trigger pulls are conducted to inject the medical adhesive. There is generally little to no bruising post procedure and the recovery time is rapid. Another more common procedure to remove varicose and spider veins is Sclerotherapy. A special solution is injected directly into the vein, this damages the lining of the vein causing it to shrink and force the blood to reroute through healthier surrounding veins, this is very effective for spider veins. Make an appointment with our Specialist who can assess and advise you by use of a venous ultrasound on what treatment would be best suited to you.

Oleander flowers are beautiful, but the plant can be deadly. In particular, DO NOT BURN THE WOOD.
L
ast month we wrote about mosquito coils and the danger of inhaling their particulate matter. The article produced quite a lot of interest, so this month we are going to continue the theme, about another item that you definitely should not burn... The wood from an Oleander tree.
With the arrival of October, many of us have log burning fires, or open fires, that we are keen to start using again to take the chill off the room in the evenings, or just add that little bit of ambience to the room that has been missing over the summer months. But be warned about the type of wood you burn because the smoke from a wood-burning fire releases pollutants, mainly in the form of toxic gases and particle pollution, and in certain cases these fumes can be especially dangerous. Poisonous Parts. So here's the science bit. Oleander plants contain several toxic elements, including cardiac glycosides, saponins, digitoxigenin, oleandrin, oleondroside, nerioside and other toxins. These poisons are found in all parts of the oleander plant and are toxic whether the plant parts are dried or green. Ingestion of any part of the oleander plant can lead to serious illness and possibly death. If you were to ingest oleander plant parts, then various symptoms can result, ranging from moderate to severe or fatal. These include skin rash, blurred vision, visual disturbances such as halos, diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, loss of appetite, irregular or slowed heartbeat, weakness, low blood pressure, confusion, dizziness, headache, fainting, depression, drowsiness, or lethargy. The hidden viper! The danger of oleander plants continues even after they are pruned or cut down. Firstly, always wear gloves when handling any part of the oleander plant. And rather than adding dead or pruned plant material to your compost heap or burning its debris, dead oleander should be taken to the garden waste bins provided by the Ayuntamiento, or taken direct to the Eco Park. Make sure wherever you put the debris is inaccessible to curious children or pets. And here's the important part of this article with regards to log burning fires, or open fires. Never ever be tempted to burn Oleander wood because the fumes given off by burning the plant are effectively toxic waste and are also deadly poisonous and can cause severe reactions or death. In the event of any incident call for an Ambulance immediately. Isn't it interesting how such an attractive plant with such beautiful flowers and lovely fragrance can be so dangerous?
● This article provided by Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea. We provide a 24 hour 365 day private Ambulance Service throughout almost the entire Costa Blanca North, including Inland. The cost is just 55€ for the whole year for the whole family. Please see our advert on this page.

Walk Your Way Well
www.femalefocusonline.com
by Niamh O'Sheehan
We all know walking is great for your head, your heart and your wallet. Going for a regular walk is one of the most convenient ways to stay active and to improve your overall well-being. There is no physical stress as it is low impact activity. There’s no mental stress as you’re not stuck to a gym timetable. Walk the dog, walk the neighbours dog, walk to work, walk to the shops or even just chose to walk the stairs. It’s uncomplicated. “Green Exercise” (walking whilst connecting with nature) has been proven to increase positive short and long term health benefits. You have an easy and free solution to reduce stress, improve your mood, enhance your psychological wellbeing and improve your concentration. Based on all of this, I think it’s safe to say there’s no such thing as a RUBBISH WALK. Wait, hold the line, oh yes there is! Have you spotted the amount of trash that has been thoughtlessly discarded and is sadly spoiling your local walking route? Whether it be a seafront stroll, a city stretch or a mountain hike, we can’t seem to get away from it. Old tin cans, cigarette butts, and the abhorrent amount of single use plastic items littering our lands. It’s fascinating to discover that waste disposal quite often depends on “social proof”, or the copying of others’ behaviour. If a person sees a place that’s full of litter and a mess, psychologists say that one is more likely to think that it doesn’t matter and more easily contribute to the problem. If one actually sees someone dropping litter, others are probably more likely to drop litter themselves! Crazy right? Apparently not. You’d think this logic only applies to children and teenagers but the laziness and ignorance of “grownups” is also disheartening when it comes to littering.
How can we change this? Well, we can simply set an example. If it’s true that human beings tend to mimic each other’s behaviours then it makes sense that by picking up trash as we walk then we can only hope that others will follow suit. Or, at the very least, our actions might deter them from dumping their next empty water bottle in a bush. And there are MORE positives. Not only are you helping the environment and improving your community, but picking up litter as you walk adds an extra element of exercise. Forget burpees! The bending and twisting can help with flexibility and muscle tone. Going on an organised #RubbishWalk can be a great way to combat loneliness and a feeling of isolation. Meet like minded people who share your love of the outdoors and follow a similar moral code. It’s an ideal weekend activity to bond with family and the kids will both enjoy it and learn from it. Top all this off with the “feel good factor” and we are all on to a winner. So, if you’re looking for a fun activity this month why not round up a few friends and go for a #RubbishWalk in your locality. Your enthusiasm will be contagious and you WILL make a difference. For more information or inspiration why not visit and LIKE the Facebook pages #RubbishWalksJavea and #RubbishWalksDenia. Upcoming events and news will be posted regularly. Remember: Never decide to do nothing just because you can only do little. Join forces and Walk Your Way Well.
Altea Club de Golf Survives and Thrives Since reopening in May after the Coronavirus lockdown ended, Altea Club de Golf has enjoyed an unexpectedly busy summer period. This was because the reduction in foreign players was compensated by additional Spanish residents, especially in July and August, who decided to take their holidays in this beautiful part of Spain instead of travelling abroad. The growing reputation of this beautiful course was another factor, as is the club’s strict enforcement of Covid safety requirements, which included taking every player’s temperature on arrival at the club. Scalp Micro Pigmentation

- a non-surgical, instant, permanent, hair loss solution By Daz Day, SMP Practitioner & Trainer Are you suffering from hair loss just like I was? I know how you feel, I felt the same before I started on my own Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP) journey back in 2011, and now, 9 years later, I've personally helped thousands of happy clients. Whatever the reason for your hair loss (Balding? Receding? Alopecia? Male Pattern? Diffused Hair? Scaring?) we have a solution that will change your life forever. Already with established clinics in the UK, we are now bringing the solution to Spain.
Boost your confidence, feel better and younger, and get your Mojo back. On average, after treatment is completed a client will look 10 to 15 years younger. You will no longer feel like people are staring at your head and judging you. Your confidence will return, and your hair loss will no longer be ruining your life. Scalp micropigmentation is the perfect solution that offers a permanent look, is very low maintenance and affordable. The treatment sessions provide an instant solution and the only upkeep required afterwards is to keep the skin on your scalp in good condition by moisturising, shaving regularly and expecting little top-up treatments every 18 months to 2 years. You can get the appearance of a fuller shaven head of hair and get your hairline back instantly, from just the first session.
SMP for Ladies As a woman, experiencing thinning hair can be an upsetting experience and can be very hard to conceal. Before booking a treatment with us we recommend that you consult with your doctor to discuss your hair loss, as you may be suffering from a medical condition such as alopecia or a thyroid disorder. Scalp micropigmentation does not replace hair but we love nothing more than reducing the contrast in look between the hair and scalp, making the skin less visible and creating the illusion of denser and thicker hair.
Scar or Injury Concealment If you have undergone a hair transplant treatment or have a head scar that you would like to conceal we would be more than happy to help. SMP can be used very effectively to hide and camouflage head scars, even including large ones left from a hair transplant.
Book a FREE, 100% no-obligation consultation and test patch Whatever your hair loss situation, why not come have a chat, I have helped thousands of clients. I'm friendly, non-judgmental and you won't get any 'pushy' salesmanship from me, what you see is what you get. ● For more information about Scalp Micro Pigmentation please see our website www.scalpmastery.com or telephone me on (0034) 628 101 711 or landline (0034) 966 670 500. How to bring the calming principles of feng shui into your home By Prudence Wade, PA It’s all about encouraging positive energy flow. Regardless of whether you’re back to school or not, this is a good time of year to stop, take stock and make some positive changes. For Gen Z in particular, there’s been an increased focus on making bedrooms a calm and soothing space. Pinterest has found the age group (born between the midNineties and early 2010s) is looking for serenity, with searches for ‘Zen bedroom ideas’ up five times on average, and ‘feng shui bedroom layout’ up two and a half times. Thinking about how to bring this feeling of calmness into your home as a whole? The Chinese practice of feng shui could help. “Translated as ‘wind-water’ in English, feng shui practises the belief that by bringing positive energy into the home, good health, wealth and luck are set to follow,” explains Rebecca Snowden, interior style advisor at FurnitureChoice.co.uk. Here are Snowden’s top tips for welcoming positive energy into your home… Declutter Many of us see September as a second new year, meaning it’s the ideal time to declutter. “A neat home works wonders for our mental clarity and overall health,” explains Snowden. “In feng shui, each space is connected to each other and allows positive energy to flow throughout the house. Add a decorative mirror to the living room to make the space feel larger, and multiply the positive energy flow. Meanwhile, closets or drawers overloaded with old items block the chi (energy) so it’s best to discard any clutter.” Balance yin and yang Snowden recommends incorporating yin (feminine) and yang (masculine) elements into your decor. “Apply this concept by mixing different shapes together,” she says. “For example, contrast the sharp edges of wall hangings with the soft curves of a sofa or mirror in the living room. This will balance out the room and give it a more relaxing feel.” Bring calm into your bedroom It’s no surprise Gen Z are keen to feng shui their bedrooms: after all, getting a good night’s sleep is crucial to overall wellbeing, and the right environment can play a big part. To boost feelings of calm and relaxation particularly in your bedroom, Snowden has two top tips: first, get rid of mirrors to help avoid an energy overload. And second, make the bed the central focus. “In feng shui, this symbolises a commanding position that allows you to take charge and handle life’s many challenges,” says Snowden. “The bed is best positioned diagonally away from your door as you will still be able to see it clearly, while not being in a direct line to it. Placing your bed against the wall will also give you a sense of security and ground you when you sleep. And for extra strength and stability, a bed with a headboard will represent this, with its solid support and build.” If you have a home office, apply the same logic to your desk to bring the focus onto productivity. Freshen up the place with plants Snowden says plants can “bring positive energy” into a room, adding: “In feng shui, they are commonly associated as a life force and bring in growth, prosperity and luck. Common indoor plants said to attract these good elements include pothos, lucky bamboo and peace lily.”

our ARIES Anyone who gets in your way this month will regret it. Any obstacle will be overcome and not always with as much diplomacy as maybe should have been used. Your attention to detail is heightened, just try not to be too picky with every little thing. TAURUS You can rest a little as a romantic problem is resolved. It had been weighing on your mind for too long. You are told something you wish you did not know as now you have to deal with it. Think it through carefully before making any decisions. GEMINI An announcement you make will not go the way you had hoped. They just need time to come around, but time is something you don't have at the moment. Move on without them and they will catch up. CANCER You do not have patience for those who do not deserve it at the moment. Your energy is taken up by spending quality time with those who need it, including repairing a relationship which has been neglected. LEO You have learned a lot over the last few months and now it is time to put things into practice. See how much easier it makes it for you going forward in both your personal and professional life. VIRGO Go with the flow and you will find the month passing without incident. Alternatively digging your heals in over something that really is not all that important will only cause friction between the very people who you should be supporting right now. You know what you should do.

oroscope LIBRA Be constructive in your criticism and people will work with you to sort out the issues rather than blocking your every turn. Owning up to your mistakes will go far, but defend yourself if you think the blame has been misplaced. SCORPIO Although things are becoming much clearer, it is annoying that you could not see this months ago as it would have saved a lot of heartache. It does mean that you can move forward now without hesitation, knowing you are going in the right direction. SAGITTARIUS Past experiences were not for nothing and you can now prove what you have learned from them. Be careful that you have all the facts before accusing someone. CAPRICORN Never mind the bigger picture, now is the time to pay particular attention to the details. Make sure you check and double check before agreeing to anything of importance, or you could be left regretting your decisions. AQUARIUS People are waiting for you to react to the rumours. There are two ways to deal with this, ignore it or face it head on. Whichever you decide the ones who are important will stand by you. Finding out the whole truth will hurt, but better that than ignorance. PISCES Although your competitive streak is at its peak that does not mean to say that it is at the expense of others. Working as a team has always meant reaching the finish in better form and better time. Avoid drama and confrontations and this will be a productive month.

Kajar and Gobi Achar Carrot and Cauliflower Pickle Ingredients
1 tsp mustard seeds 3 carrots cut into thin matchsticks 1 tsp nigella seeds 1 cauliflower cut into small florets ½ tsp black pepper 4 tablespoon rapeseed/veg oil 1 tsp turmeric 1 tsp cumin seeds Salt to taste The above spices can be replaced by a Curry On Cooking Bombay Potato kit. Time: Prep; 15 Minutes. Cook: 8-10 Minutes Indian achar or pickles are a must at mealtimes, a perfect companion to curries, lentils, rice and flatbreads. A medley of spices lift the mundane vegetables to a taste sensation, guaranteed to transform any dull meal! This achar is a great accompaniment to cheese and in particular cheese on toast! The pickle can be eaten immediately or can be left at room temperature for a couple of days to mature in flavour before eating. Recipe Heat the oil in a wok or frying pan, over medium-high heat until hot. Add cumin seeds, turn the heat down to medium, after 10 seconds add the mustard and nigella seeds along with the turmeric, stir as the spices begin to change colour and pop, for about 30 seconds. Add the carrots and cauliflower, salt and pepper, mix well and continue stirring until the veg is tender, this should take around 6 to 10 minutes – check the seasoning. Once cooked – let the achar cool completely before decanting into a sterilised jar. Once opened, store the jar in a fridge. It will keep for two weeks, but it never lasts that long our house! 2nd (and 3rd) time lucky with SHOWERMAN!
“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again” is the old saying. And this is exactly how David and Sue of Los Cerezos in Jávea felt after having their first bathroom refurbished. I’ll let them explain… We bought this house in December 2018, from the original owner who had owned it since it was built in 1979. It was old and tired and still had the 3 original bathrooms: Family, ensuite and under-build apartment. We wanted to crack on with getting the house updated and thought initially we could live with the ensuite and under-build bathrooms but the main bathroom was awful. So we got various quotes, but as we were fairly new here and we didn’t have much experience, we chose the cheapest company. We soon came to regret that decision as although they did a decent job in the end, they were very inefficient; and it took a total of 2 months. Any difficulties they came across became our problem, instead of sorting things themselves they passed it back to us to fix, and as we weren’t resident the whole time it was extra stressful trying to sort things out when we weren’t here. We wanted to move in and get settled in time for the summer, so they had a deadline, but they missed it. So although the bathroom turned out quite well in the end, it was a very painful process. So, when the time came to get quotes for the ensuite, we didn’t invite that company, but as a typical Yorkshireman I like value for money, so for the 2nd quote I asked Alexandra to come back again and she was happy to do so. We liked her quote, so we gave her the go-ahead as we appreciated her flexibility. And wow what a different experience. SHOWERMAN quoted 8 days to do the ensuite and it took 8 days. They worked hard, sorted any hassles and were very efficient, we were delighted to have found a company we could trust and leave them to it. Alex sorted any problems that arose…for example there was an issue with the stopcock (we were having other work done at the same time and the water could not be switched off) and the plumber was there and fixed it within 30 minutes. And they are nice! Eager to help they even helped carry our shopping bags in. As a family company, SHOWERMAN is someone to rely on, and someone to get the job done. We were so happy with the 2nd bathroom that we decided to get the 3rd one done as well, but this time we didn’t shop around for quotes, we went straight to Alexandra as we had found someone we could trust. ● Contact Alexandra and you will not be disappointed. I am writing this quite late, a bit too late for the deadline so I am sure the editor is wanting to throttle me but it is a busy time for us with customers putting their plans in place for the new gardens in 2021, hopefully things will settle down after winter and into 2021 so we can all start to enjoy ourselves a bit more.
&
At this moment I want to drop Article supplied by Lee Charlesworth in a relevant quote from my article last year, October 2019. “The main thing to do even if you are having to work hard in the garden is enjoy it, for me there isn’t a greater feeling than doing some hard work and then sitting and relaxing, having a warm drink in the garden.” As much as I always want people to go out and enjoy their garden, I think this year has definitely given us the chance to do that, and as I said a month or so ago, those of us who have gardens can now understand the value those gardens with the lockdown mayhem restricting us to our homes - our outside space is invaluable. So, it is logical that many people are focussing on wanting to make the most of their gardens and Charlesworth Gardens is the company you need to call if you wish to do that. We have had a strange year weather wise as well and as much as summer got hot, it wasn’t that long really and consequently plants have a had a really good growing season. I know this as I have several plant barometers that allow me to see what is happening with plants, and this year the summer months have been a bumper for growth. So as always my pruning advice is only trim, do not prune your shrubs at this time of year as we are heading quickly towards winter, and based on current weather patterns who knows what we will get. So always do your major pruning in the spring as this allows you to get the best out of your plants. Trees are a slightly different problem to deal with. At this time of year, experience has taught us that you have to prune your trees reasonably well as the increased chance of high winds and rain, and especially the two things continued on next page

together, can see your lovely big trees, which may have been in the ground for years, blown over, and it can be a real shame to lose such large and important plants from your garden. You need to do two main things, firstly is to cut out and remove branches from the middle of the tree and secondly, remove length from the branches. The simple reasons are that removing growth from the middle of the tree (which you don’t want anyway, for a number of reasons) allows air to pass through and then reducing the branches in length keeps them stronger, less likely to snap and reduces the overall area which wind can catch the tree, all of which reduces the stress on the trunk and the roots of the tree greatly. This is the time of year when the garden can be used differently and the introduction of a fire pit in the garden or terrace can inject a new feeling of warmth into your garden or outside space, allowing you to enjoy it just a little more than you normally would. You can use fire pits that also double up as barbeques which makes it even more fun especially if friends come around. Enjoy your garden and if you need help with any garden design, landscaping work or gardening information you can always contact us. We can come and create a perfect garden space for you or supply any product required for the garden for you to get the best from it.
Go out and enjoy your garden.

Note from Benny: After 12 years of publication, the Diary is still going strong. Despite several months of lockdown, most of our stalwart entertainers are now dusting themselves down and 'Once more, stepping unto the breach'. Unfortunately, a few groups have gone to the wall, whilst others are taking a breather and will be re-launching their talents either later this year, or during the early part of 2021. So please support your local group when and where you get the opportunity. Don´t forget, all groups in this column are non-profit making and donate all proceeds to local charities. Caprice Ladies Choir: The choir are enjoying the new normality and are holding socially distanced outdoor rehearsals - one of the advantages of living in this beautiful country. Although they will not be performing in concert until next year due to the restrictions, they are building up their repertoire ready to present a concert as soon as possible. Stay safe everyone whilst they hope to see you all soon. For more information about Caprice, check their website: www.capriceladieschoir.com or contact Aileen on 696 514 613. Careline Theatre: This is their latest press release. ‘Our Panto read thru was hilarious with a great turn out, followed by the auditions with a super cast chosen. Next January's big Classic Panto, `Sleeping Beauty´ is something to look forward to, Covid permitting. We will run the show over more days to allow the audiences to be seated safely.
Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir: The Choir miss getting together and singing but hope to start rehearsing again soon at Benitachell Church, which will enable social distancing to be achieved. Meanwhile, check out their Facebook page for videos of past concerts and website costablancamalevoicechoir.wikidot.com Jávea Players: Childhood friends, Andrew and Melissa, become romantically involved with other partners, but develop a life-long relationship by correspondence, starting with a birthday party thank you note. Over nearly 50 years they discuss their hopes, ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and even defeats. `Love Letters´ by A.R. Gurney, celebrates the power of the written word and runs from 17 to 21 November [possibly also 24 to 28 November] in the Studio Theatre. 50% audiences to allow social distancing. Tickets 11.50€ from the Box Office at www.javeaplayers.com. Phoenix Dancers: The Dancers have been working hard, despite this dreaded epidemic. They have a production ready and waiting so if any charity needs them, just let them know when and where. They are still on the lookout for a male singer. The ability to dance as well would be great, but not essential. Anyone interested please get in touch with Phaedra: 670 290 896. Sounds Familiar: The Company are looking forward to their next production `Magic of the Musicals´ to be performed early in 2021. If you are interested in joining this group, or would like more information, please contact Philip on 965 581 483 or philip@soundsfamiliar.es. The Chaplaincy Singers: After a very successful September concert The Singers, with Musical Director Philip Ashley, have already commenced rehearsals for their Christmas programmes. If you love to sing why not pop along and join them at the Ermita Sant Josep, La Fustera, every Monday at 10:45. More info from Eileen on 607 706 904. All welcome. Valley Voices: With great excitement Valley Voices restarted on 14 Sept with a new programme of live rehearsals, ensuring social distancing, outside. A few members preferred to join in on Zoom as they are still shielding. Their aim is to perform a concert sometime in the new year circumstances allowing. If you would like to join the Voices or require further information, please ring: 634 301 483 or contact them on: valleyvoicesspain@gmail.com. JAGUAR BIG CATS BACK ON THE PROWL
Page 33
Written by Sandra Brook It is with great pleasure to be able to say that JEC-CostaBlanca put on a display of Jaguars at a show on the 30th August at Pilar de la Horadada. On September 16th a group of members ran together from Albir in the north of Alicante to join members from the south at a meeting point in Torrellano. Once refreshed and regrouped, they proceeded on a run with 15 highly polished big cats growling with pleasure as they left their meeting point. They purred along contentedly while proudly displaying their magnificence as they ran in convoy heading for Agost. Agost is a village famous for pottery making which is situated in the mountains of Alicante, unfortunetly due to restrictions this years' run did not include a visit to a potters. It was a good day with a good run which was enjoyable in the lovely sunshine and even after a little hiccup when some frisky cats missed the restaurant and carried on around the roundabout, Mr President Mike soon had them slinking their way back to join the group of cats that were lined up outside the restaurant Don Camilo where we went on to enjoy our meal while warmly welcoming 4 new members and their partners to the Costa Blanca region of the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club. If you own a Jaguar and would like to join JEC contact Mike Brook mikebikejec@gmail.com

In total, Gary and Nicki Jarman, owners of the bar, managed to collect 1,930€ and two buckets full of coins, to which they have added 70€ donated by the Bar El Niu. This money has been earmarked for the local branch of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC). The donation event was attended by the owners of The Drunken Duck, Gary and Nicki Jarman; Nikki McConnel; the Councilor for Residents, Martine Mertens, and the president of the local branch of AECC in l'Alfàs, Pamela Dawson. The local branch of AECC want to thank everyone who participated in the event. The Spanish Association Against Cancer integrates patients, families, volunteers and professionals who work together to prevent, raise awareness, accompany people and finance cancer research projects that allow a better diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
