CAPRICORN
The butt of the zodiac
I
t's that time of year again, I'm never sure if I'm glad to have dark skies again at a sensible time, or if I'm missing the lovely sunny evenings. Anyway, it's now getting dark before 10pm, and we can all enjoy some fabulous night skies. All you regular readers will know that I'm making my way through the famous constellations of the zodiac, this month it's Capricorn, and I've quite a few things to try and ram home. I've always been mystified as to how these constellations got their names, as a group of stars, Capricorn is a dull, undistinguished vaguely triangular constellation that to me looks nothing like a goat. Normally I would have a problem trying to explain to a newcomer where Capricorn is, but this month it's easy. Firstly, if you look directly south on the 14th of October, the Moon is bang in the middle of Capricorn. On any other day this month you'll see the planet Jupiter in the south, it's on the left hand edge of Capricorn, Jupiter is so big and bright in the south that you won't miss it. A short distance away to the right is Saturn, and at the moment, they almost mark the edges of Capricorn. None of the stars in this constellation are very bright, so a pair of binoculars will help a lot. Let’s start with Alfa Capricornus, also called Algredi (sometimes Giedi) it's on the top right, just above Saturn. It's interesting because it appears to be a double star, that is two stars that are so close that they orbit around each other, not unusual
www.femalefocusonline.com
in the universe. What makes this one different is that the two stars are nearly a thousand light years apart. What we are seeing is two stars in almost the same direction from us, the further one being the brighter one. The pair are also similar types of star, so that a glance at the spectrums makes then difficult to tell apart. I could go on with a really boring description of the other stars, but the constellation really isn't worth it for an amateur. If you're looking this way enjoy the planets instead. Our astronomy group is continuing to grow, and at last we are starting to see each other again. We also have regular contact with another group in the north who organise some excellent events. In October we will all be treated to a talk from a visiting professor about meteorites and Lunar geology, or Selenology if you want to be accurate. In the past we've had talks on many things by real experts including one on mapping space for asteroids and possible collisions. I won't rattle on with lots of details, the point is that if you only look in the popular press about these things, you'd be reading sensationalist nonsense. If you are really interested, join us. The real universe is better, more spectacular and much more interesting than you'd ever guess.

am going to start this article with an observation. Unfortunately, for over a year now, I have been struggling with knee problems and I have to be very careful of pavements, steps and access to The Ladies Room, and this part has been a nightmare. How people manage when they are disabled, I just don’t know but I am very shocked at the lack of facilities in so many places. Even just a support bar in the toilets would make so much difference. Can I therefore ask owners of restaurants to check their facilities are actually easy to use, for those who need it? With the easing of the travel restrictions, I am delighted to be able to inform you that once again I can now offer travel insurance. Unfortunately, the company that we have been dealing with for many years, for some reason have been unable to become Brexit friendly and have withdrawn from the Expat market, which meant I had to find a suitable travel insurance for my clients. This was not an easy task and took some time, but we have found a very good alternative, which matches what we used to be able to offer, and I am delighted. The new policy is very similar to what we are used to and so far the service has been excellent and the prices are very competitive. All the Sales Consultants have been trained with the new policies and to obtain a quote is the easiest thing to do, with single trip and yearly policies available. I have noticed on the television, UK insurance companies advertising and in little print - those awful words - auto renewal. This is quite normal so unless you are checking your bank statements on a regular basis, you can miss your renewal premium. My company has invested in a renewal department of now very experienced ladies, who contact all my clients on renewal, to check that they understand their cover and inform them of the new premium, which is always very reasonable with Liberty. It is a service which I am very proud of, as it works extremely well. ● For more information or a quotation, please contact one of my offices, email info@jennifercunningham.net or visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net.

FERROL - faros with a big surprise
T
HE ROAD FROM FERROL TO THE FARO DE CABO PRIOR IS WINDING AND NARROW. It undulates with woods, bent trees and uncultivated fields alongside. The lighthouse (faro) soon appears on the horizon set on barren, windy terrain. Near the car park a large blue sign states this is Faro 03220, located at certain latitude and longitude with an elevation of 107 meters. A few metres on, the road leads to a large building with the lighthouse behind.
Although guarding ‘The Coast of Death’ with its flashing light, there is nothing much to see here except the wild Atlantic ocean, white crested waves and the occasional sailboat passing by. Returning to the car park something on the left side catches the eye. Strange buildings not on any map or signpost. Low-lying concrete buildings difficult to spot. What can this be? Only a few kilometres north, Faro Punta Frouxeria is reached on yet another headland. Same barren, windy landscape. Same large blue sign. This is Faro 0321, a huge seven storey concrete structure with blue painted edges at an elevation of 75 metres. Over to the right there is a depression in the ground. What is this? In fact, the depression leads to a long dark tunnel with many large rooms off to each side. The tunnel branches to concrete platforms cut in a vertical cliff face, facing the Atlantic and the Bay of Biscay. Deliberately hidden from the view of a casual visitor, this is a big surprise. Both these Faros and their concrete installations date back to the Second World War. They are Nazi gun emplacements, not for defence as in Normandy, but to attack Allied shipping coming from the Mediterranean Sea into the Bay of Biscay. As Spain was meant to be neutral in WW2 they should not be there! And that’s the reason why they are hidden from view, rubbed out of the history books, and deliberately forgotten by the Spanish government. Make no mistake these are big gun emplacements. Bigger than Normandy. Cabo de Prior gun emplacements sit on both sides of
the road, high up on a hill and low down by the sea. The first thing to be found are concrete sentry boxes. Next, large accommodation buildings appear, thin rusty metal frames holding crumbling brick walls. Another block consisting of canteen, communal rooms and game rooms can be identified. The main gun emplacements, about 10 in total, protrude against the blue skyline. One group of four are together on one level, the others scattered around. With vegetation disguising the outline, getting close is the only way of discovering a bunker. Fixed to the concrete are metal gun turntables. Graffiti is everywhere, a surreal decoration. There are many other such installations along the coast of Asturias and Galicia, deliberately hidden and difficult to find. An adventurer should aim for a lighthouse, on the NW tip of Spain, on a windy promontory, hidden in undulations or sand dunes. Don’t bother with the tourist office. Faro de Cabo Prior, Galicia. Map reference 43 3403 N, 8 1851 W. Faro Punta Frouxeria, Galicia. 43 3705 N, 8 1117 W. Have you considered taxation on your assets, both ongoing and on your demise?
Female Focus Magazine October 2021
A
s the saying goes – the only two certainties in life are death and taxes. Unfortunately, we cannot help you with the first, but we are able to offer advice on the latter. Many of us are income taxpayers and understand that we will owe tax through our working life and quite possible on our demise, but none of us want to pay more tax than we need to. The first step to minimising any current or future tax liability is to have a good understanding of the tax system in your country of residence. This, ideally, should include some information on the taxes which are applicable to you, the tax tables (i.e. brackets via which income is taxed at different percentages) and any available allowances which you may be able to use to reduce tax. Knowing when tax returns are declared and when the liability is due often gives clients peace of mind. Tax planning would be straightforward if all countries had identical systems, but that is simply not the case. For example, the UK's tax year runs from April to April, whereas the Spanish tax year runs in line with the calendar year, January to December. From a financial planning point of view, careful consideration needs to be given when clients make the move from UK to Spain, or vice versa. You may be surprised to know that calculating taxes in Spain is also considerably more complex than in the UK, a country which generally works on the basis of “one rule for everyone”. Comparatively, Spain's autonomous regions have the power to set their own rules and so you quite often see a significant difference in taxes depending on an individual's circumstances. This is especially true for Inheritance Tax, often a key consideration for overseas residents. For us, this highlights the need to be working with a fully qualified and regulated firm; one which fully understands the tax system. The use of flexible tax-efficient investment vehicles can really benefit an individual or couple and allow them to make use of available personal allowances. In addition to being cost-effective, these times of products also allow you to retain access to 100% of the capital from day 1 if your adviser works on a fee-only basis like us. If you would like to discuss any questions or queries you have about tax, investments or how they work here in Spain, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will be more than happy to help.

EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENCE

Advertising Feature by Casas Ambiente
xperience the Difference has been our "tagline" since we started selling properties over 25 years ago. From the start we believed - and still do - that in order to be successful for our clients, we need to strive to be different. We are a family run agency that passionately believes in professionalism, patience and friendliness.
Patience is one of those qualities that is so often forgotten. It is rare in life for a person to conduct a six figure transaction, so we take as much time as our clients need to understand every aspect of their property sale. Of course, doing it with a friendly smile makes a world of difference and we're proud to say that through our personalised service, many clients go on to be friends. Our team is deliberately international so we can converse naturally in your language. Finally, if we weren't professional in all our dealings, nothing would work. In our experience the "devil is always in the detail". We are members of several professional bodies including MLS:03724, a Moraira based Agent Association dedicated to continual improvement at a local level and committed to work together to sell your property. We are also members of CRS (Certified Residential Specialists) and Realtor©, 2 International bodies whose discipline helps us enhance your experience. In many ways, it's our approach and experience that makes the difference, and we're happy to share that with you. So, if you really want to sell, experience the difference yourself and contact Casas Ambiente. • Casas Ambiente, Av. de la Paz 10b, 03724 Moraira, Tel: +34 966 498 595, website: www.casas-ambiente.com email: contact@casas-ambiente.com

A LIFE UNFOLDING

BOOK LAUNCH
IN JAVEA AND CALPE
T
his picture (left) is the front cover of the book which is a 9ft carved oak tree called the 'Keeper of the Colliery' which overlooks the valley I was born and brought up in. Many of you will know me as a teacher in Jávea, but I am in the process of changing my career to be a full time Author. My first book is in the process of being published. It is a semi autobiographical book about how the world has changed through my eyes in the 50's, 60's and 70's. The backdrop for me is Cardiff and the South Wales valleys but it is unashamedly nostalgic, and hopefully will evoke memories in all of a certain age! The book is called 'A Life Unfolding'. It will be available in hardback, paperback and e-format. I have arranged a number of launches of the book in the area: 1. Polly's Bookshop in the port in Jávea on Tuesday 2 November 10am to 2pm (665 314 404 for details). 2. At the Libreria Europa Bookshop in Calpe on Monday 8 November 5pm to 8pm (visit: http://www.libreria-europa-calpe.com for directions). The book will be on all Amazon forums, but we will send one to anywhere in the world. The UK books will be distributed from Wales, Europe and the rest of the world from Spain. The book is 12€ for the hardback, 10€ for the paperback, plus postage. We would rather send to avoid Amazon putting their mark up on it! I would appreciate your support. It is a daunting task to start a fresh career at an age where I should retire! Come along to chat and look, there is no pressure to buy, at least come and have a glass of wine!

EMSCULPT NEO
= LESS FAT MORE MUSCLE 2 THERAPIES IN A SINGLE 30 MINUTE PROCEDURE 60% of women and 90% of men are interested in experiencing one or both fat reducing and muscle toning treatments. EMSCULPT NEO is the first and only non invasive body shaping procedure that combines 2 energies for combined fat elimination and muscle building treatments in a 30 minute session. WHAT IS EMSCULPT NEO? EMSCULPT NEO simultaneously emits both radiofrequency and high-intensity electromagnetic energies. The end result is greater fat reduction and muscle growth than any single standard procedure, for less time and less money. EMSCULPT NEO emits synchronised radiofrequency and HIFEM+ energies using different applicators depending on the area of the body to be treated. The radiofrequency heats the temperature of the muscles rapidly by several degrees. This prepares the muscles for exposure to stress, similar to a warm up activity before a workout. In less than 4 minutes, the rise in temperature in subcutaneous fat reaches levels that cause apoptosis i.e fat cells are permanently damaged and slowly removed from the body. Clinical studies showed on average a 30% reduction in subcutaneous fat. Bypassing the brain limitations, HIFEM+ energy contracts the muscle fibres in the area at intensities that are not achievable during a voluntary work out. Extreme stress forces the muscle to adapt, resulting in an increase in the number and growth of the muscle fibres and cells. Clinical studies showed on average a 25% muscle volume increase. WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED WITH EMSCULPT NEO? EMSCULPT NEO can be used on the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, arms and calves

Autumn Trends at Mimis Kru
A
s the cooler months roll in we start to swop our top knots and beachy hair styles for a more shiny warmer look, the main trend for the new season is texture - anything that gives the hair movement and sheen. Mimis Kru colourists are experts at creating stunning colours tailor made for you, with richer and warmer colours high on the list of favourites for autumn. Revitilising our hair and skin is so important after the summer so we recommend Olaplex hair treatments and Eve Taylor skin quenching facials. For a new look, the influences from the 70s are on the catwalks including updated versions of the Shag and Mullet which are still going strong with strong fringes. Clothing fabrics and patterns also have a nod to the 70s. Last year many of us adopted a slouchy look as we were mainly staying home. Now it’s time to get our mojo back so we suggest a big sort out of your clothes! A great way to start is wardrobe organising; group into tops, trousers/skirts, dresses etc. then each section into colours families, this way you can start to really see what you have hiding in there! There is always an item you love but can’t find anything else to match it with, so why not bring it to Mimis Kru boutique in Las Marinas and let us help you create a new outfit. Bunions or HAV?
Page 15
Feae F Magae Oe 2021
he Bunion or Hallux Valgus is a deformity of the foot caused by a deviation of the first toe towards the middle axis of the foot and a deviation of the first metatarsal towards the outer edge of the foot accompanied by irregular bone growth in the first metatarsal head and articular incongruity of the metatarsophalangeal joint. This causes pain due to inflammation of the soft tissues of the area from constant friction against footwear and from the structural and mechanical alteration due to the bone deviation.
When is it recommended to operate on bunions? It is recommended to operate on bunions when they are painful, when osteoarthritis appears or the structural deformity affects walking correctly which in turn affects other levels of the locomotor system. It is also advisable to perform surgery in cases in which as a result of the bunion, the toes are deforming like when the second toe appears hammer-like. When a patient wishes to undergo an operation a professional should study each case individually, taking into account the age, health status, lifestyle ... etc. At Portalet Clinic, we will explain in detail and alleviate any worries without compromise. What type of technique is carried out at Clinica Podológica Portalet? We perform minimum incision surgery. As its name suggests, it is done using minimal skin incisions, usually 2 to 4mm. Through these millimetric incisions we can reach the soft tissues and bone, without causing injury to the adjacent tissues. Advantages of Minimal Incision Surgery: - Immediate recovery as the procedure is minimal. - The patient walks away with a post-surgical shoe without crutches or help. - After just 48 hours the patient can continue life as normal.
- Almost painless. - No fixing bolts or needles used. One of the drawbacks of open surgery is the use of fixing materials, with Minimal Incision Surgery fixations are not necessary as the soft tissues themselves, which we have respected, the joint capsule and a light dressing are responsible for this. - Local anesthetic, only affecting the foot, so the dose used is less. - No hemostasia (restriction of blood flow). As the size of the incision is so small, there is little bleeding so there is no need for a tourniquet, thus avoiding all risks of cutting blood flow. - Less risk of infection. The small size of the incisions also decreases the risk of infection. - Barely visible scaring. Early-onset Dementia W
hen dementia starts before the age of 60, the cause may be genetic. New Alzheimer's tests can help with early detection of some aspects of the disease. This can be easily detected by taking a genetic blood test. Many people with dementia, and their relatives, worry that this may run in their family and want to have peace of mind for the future. Early-onset Alzheimer’s disease typically affects people between the ages of 30-60, with less than 10% of all people suffering with Alzheimer’s being affected. This is caused by an inherited change in certain genes, one of them being the gene APOE. Mutations in these genes result in the production of abnormal proteins that are associated with the disease. Each of these mutations plays a role in the breakdown of APP, a protein whose precise function is not yet fully recognised. The breakdown is part of a process that generates harmful forms of amyloid plaques, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. It is essential to have a medical and psychological examination, where the specialist can, by asking certain questions ascertain if there may be cause for alarm. If this is the case further testing and scans may be necessary as developing a treatment plan for any disease requires a clear diagnosis.

Intravenous Vitamin Detox Therapy "Vi-Tox" by Dr Margo Livingston Why vitamin C? Stress causes disease. Our bodies produce free radicals through cellular processes, induced by stress, which can be severely toxic and, eventually life-threatening. Vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants ever known. It acts by reducing oxidative stress and stabilising free radicals, allowing body processes to continue normally and efficiently, providing optimum energy flow and health. All illness is a result of oxidative stress so it follows that this can be reversed or even prevented by preventing oxidative stress and free radical formation. Humans do not produce vitamin C and, the majority of us are deficient in this vital substance, mostly unaware of both its massive benefits and, the results of our deficiency. Many people think it normal to feel tired, depressed with diffuse joint pain and poor wound healing. All of these are linked to vitamin C deficiency. Benefits of Vitamin C • Supports immune system • Improves energy and adrenal health • Supports healthy joints and skin • Supports healthy ageing • Improves blood flow to the heart • Improves eyesight • Promotes other antioxidants like vitamin E • Helps produce bile – removes toxins out of liver • Decreases risk of cardiovascular disease • Kills abnormal cells, like cancer Why intravenous? Intravenous vitamin and mineral formulae have been used successfully for over 60 years to treat a variety of medical problems, including asthma, migraine, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, acute muscle spasm, respiratory tract infections, chronic sinusitis, allergies, cardiovascular disease, neurological and mental health disorders. Intravenous administration of nutrients by-passes the liver metabolism which would destroy most of the benefits of oral ingestion, prior to the nutrients getting to cellular level. It follows that, serum concentrations much higher than that possible by oral and even intramuscular administration, are achievable via the intravenous route. Much higher doses of the vitamins can be given intravenously. They reach the target cells rapidly via the blood stream, without degradation and create valuable benefits to the unhealthy body system. Lee Sharpe Joins Pure Organic CBD

I
t's been over a year since we ran an article about Pure Organic CBD. The Female Focus team was in Jávea and thought it would be a good idea to do an update and see what’s been happening within their company. Over the past year, Robby who handles the day to day operation of the company, informed us that they’ve had a really exciting time, increased sales significantly and gained thousands of happy customers across Europe. He attributes this success to their high quality 100% organic products all being produced on the same family farm in Switzerland under Bio-Suisse Certification. They have also impressively gained a 4.8 star rated excellent ranking on Trustpilot. Pure Organic CBD is happy to announce the addition of Ex-Manchester United Star Lee Sharpe to the team as a director. Lee, who has always been interested in alternative medicine, started off as a customer, but believes in the company so much he joined. Lee will be working to develop Pure Organic Golf, a CBD brand focused on the golf market where major stars like Bubba Watson and Tiger Woods are using products. The team at Pure Organic has also launched a horse CBD product after the success of their pets range and working with APAC, a horse charity in Denia nursing a horse back to health. The company claims convincing people to overcome the stigma of cannabis products is a major hurdle in the industry. To help, they offer a 30 day money back guarantee on every sale. The company says that not a single customer has returned a product. They are offering an exclusive discount to all Female Focus and QFocus readers, 15% off your order of up to 3 bottles of CBD. All you have to do is scan the qr code in this article and select your products on their website. The Discount will automatically be applied so use it today!

Raisins, our local gold by Rhona Wells - rhonawells@hotmail.com
G
rape growing was the main wealth of villages across the Marina Alta for more than 200 years between the 18th and 20th centuries, although there is evidence that it began as early as the 15th century in these parts. However, it was not wine produced from the many tons of fruits harvested annually that made the Marina Alta internationally famous but the humble raisin. For two centuries, boats and later steamers loaded with thousands of tons of the sun-dried fruits would sail from Denia to supply markets in Liverpool, Northern Europe and as far afield as New York. The raisins were produced by removing water from fresh Muscat grapes that once flourished in abundance in our area. The Muscat grape vines grow from the coast to the inner region. The most common variety across the vineyards of Marina Alta region is still the “Muscat of Alexandria”, also known as “Roman Muscat”. This variety has been linked to every civilisation that has passed through the region since the time of the Roman Empire. When correctly cured, the fruits are sweet with a soft, meaty texture. These days the raisin is highly prized as a high-energy food that can be eaten on the move but, traditionally, they were used in desserts, as well as stews -particularly rabbit and pork- and other local dishes such as spinach with pine nuts and raisins, quails with raisins, Moorish inspired tagines and the original Spanish bar cake. Evidence of this once important trade can still be seen dotted across our area, for those who know where to look. The process of producing raisins from the local abundance of grapes, was conducted in single storey structures locally known as riuraus. These riuraus provided a covered space where many nets of reed thatch were hung across the width of the structure before being filled with freshly picked grapes. Generally, the riuraus were long, arched, open sided, stone-built barns, covered with a Costa stone roof to protect the grapes from rain and humidity. Although the bulk of the highly profitable raisin industry is long gone, many sturdy riuraus remain around the area, testament to the region’s glory days as the world’s top producer of this ubiquitous commodity. The Jesus Pobre covered market was formerly the town’s active riurau, while in Jávea, one of the former raisin drying sheds is now a highly-prized entertainment space. The Jávea-based eco-tourism company, Endemica, www.endemicanatura.com organise guided tours round the riuraus of the area. Raisins from the Jávea area stand out from others because of the particular way they are dried. For centuries, the l’escaldà

A massive thank you to all who took part in the day, to Paris 24 for allowing us to use this fantastic venue, Alex and team could not do enough to help and everything was 100%. To the volunteers who worked so hard as well and the Master of Ceremonies and entertainers who were amazing. The Padel organisers and players also did so much to help raise funds and the stalls were so generous. The community donated fantastic prizes to also raise funds. I am so very happy to announce that we raised 3000€, an absolutely outstanding amount to help our charity to continue to do the work that is needed for the cats and the community. I cannot thank everyone enough for their support and as requested by so many of you there will be future events planned for you all to enjoy. traditional technique has been used. The technique accelerates raisin drying by first introducing fresh grapes into a large pot of boiling water laced with a special chemical compound, for a few seconds, to form a liquid known in the trade as lleixiu. The grapes are immersed in the lleixiu until their skins crack. They are then spread over a net, made of reed thatch and left to dry in the sunlight. This same traditional method is still in use today. The process inspired a series of paintings by the internationally celebrated, Valencian-born artist Joachim Sorolla. To learn more about the techniques used locally, visit the Solar Blasco Archaeological and Ethnological Museum in Jávea. In addition to possibly the world’s most succulent raisins, the Muscat grape is also used to produce a sweet wine, known as Mistela and a range of high-quality white wines. In 2019, a study by the regulatory council of the Pasas de Malaga Denomination of Origin confirmed the dietary benefits of raisins and suggested the humble fruit may even be a tool in helping to prevent Alzheimer's disease. These days, although a small quantity of raisins is still produced in the Marina Alta region, mainly to fulfil local needs, the bulk of the world’s raisin production comes from Turkey, the United States and Iran.

Trip to Les Freses bodega in Jesús Pobre
www.femalefocusonline.com
One of the most picturesque vineyards on the Costa Blanca is tucked away in the charming village of Jesús Pobre, nestling between Dénia and Jávea. With fabulous views over the Montgó, Les Freses of Jesús Pobre has a growing reputation for producing quality white, red and sweet wines. Why is it called Les Freses? Les Freses is valenciano for the strawberries and this vineyard has been created on old, abandoned strawberry fields. The land buried the old plants to create the essence of what makes these Jesús Pobre wines so special. That's why the winery could only be called Les Freses. A particular favourite is Tallaruques, a genuine Valencian red which is aged for six months in stainless steel tanks. The vineyard uses traditional local varieties and Tallaruques is a blend of giró, monastrell, bobal, forcallà and montalvana. It is a pleasant, fruity red with a hint of strawberries, naturally. Only 1,200 bottles were produced of this wine in 2020. Les Freses white is a delicious wine made from Muscat of Alexandria grapes with a pleasant citrusy taste along with an aftertaste of pepper, grapefruit, fennel and ginger. You can book a two-hour guided tour to the bodega to discover the history of Les Freses and all about the wines. The visits must be pre-booked and you can get to know the vineyard, cellar and wines as well as tasting three wines with two tapas. Alternatively you can combine a trip to Les Freses with a visit to the archaeological site of Benimaquia in the company of an archaeologist. This takes around five hours. Les Freses is found in Calle Alquería de Ferrando 1, Jesús Pobre. Phone: (+34) 682 53 94 63. Email: info@lesfreses.com. The Aircrew Association Costa Blanca commemorates the 81st anniversary of The Battle Of Britain

he Aircrew Association Costa Blanca held a Commemorative lunch at La Cumbre restaurant on Wednesday 15 September. It was exactly 81 years ago to the day that the tide of the Battle of Britain turned in the favour of the allies and members and guests were able to acknowledge that momentous day in their customary manner. The 80th Anniversary in 2020 had to be cancelled due to the Covid restrictions. After refreshments on arrival on the terrace of La Cumbre and a welcoming address by the Association’s Chairman, Max Maxwell, the Honorary Chaplain to the Association, Father Marcus Ronchetti, said a highly appropriate grace in which he referred to and recognised the heroism and courage shown by The Few! A raffle later during the lunch was followed by the successful auction of two rare prints provided by the Association’s President, Tom Brown: ‘The Dambusters’ by Frank Wooten including a Certificate of Authentication, signed by the artist and six survivors and ‘Men and Machines’ by Gordon Davies featuring, appropriately for the occasion, a Hawker Hurricane and a Spitfire. Again, this print was signed by the artist and Flight Lieutenant Roger Hall DFC, the Spitfire pilot. Before the auction, Alan Threadgould AFC QVCSA recounted an amusing tale of his meeting with Frank Wooten many years ago whilst Alan was serving in the RAF. The two successful bidders, Hugh Parker for the Men and Machines and Eric Davies for The Dambusters were both extremely grateful to have acquired two high quality prints! Following the auction, Father Marcus gave the Aircrew Exhortation, Clive Rothwell proposed the toast to King Filipe and the Association’s Life Vice President, Peter Langley DFC proposed the toast to The Queen. The keynote speech was then given by one of the two serving members of the Association, Sqn Ldr David Tucker. David’s subject was: ‘The Battle of Britain – The Dowding System and its Integration with the Aircraft of Fighter Command to win The Battle’. Following David’s excellent and fascinating talk and the toast To Those Who gave So Much, proposed by David, Max Maxwell gave his closing remarks before the occasion was brought to its conclusion by the Aircrew Toast, To Absent Friends and Fellow Aircrew, proposed by the Association’s President, Tom Brown. It was a memorable occasion and members were delighted to be able to Commemorate The Battle again! The photograph shows the Association Members prior to the lunch. FORWARD THINKING As a designer I am always trying to forward think, I am planning on how a garden will look now and in ten years. When I create a design, it is to do the whole garden, (unless a client has specified otherwise) it is an idea to get us from A to B considering as many factors within the design as possible. This includes all the construction methods and materials, hidden works for cabling, drainage and many other aspects that people don’t think about on the surface, but have to be there for a project to work. This includes aspects such as heights and angles of terraces for drainage. I understand how expensive gardens can be and therefore sometimes clients may wish to do the work in parts or themselves over a period of time. This is the big reason why we prefer to have a general plan of the garden. It's very important to make sure all aspects of the garden work with each other and then even if a client wants to scale things back, it makes sure the future plan of the garden is in place. The main reason for this is so if you do decide to expand a terrace or build a new connecting staircase, that everything still works in relationship with everything else already included in the design. The biggest problem with not considering future works or possible works is that when additional work is completed, the fall on the new terrace may not meet up exactly with the fall on the existing terrace. This is a pet peeve of mine. I have been into a thousand gardens where

The toy museum and art centre are in the former Dénia-Carcaixent train station in Calle Calderón. The silence is over for a group of musical men on the Costa Blanca.
Members of the Costa Barber Singers have decided that, for them, the Covid emergency is over and they will now start rehearsals with a view to resuming their massive melodymaking and charity work all over the Costa Blanca. Based in Benissa, the group was founded by self-syled barbershop music maniac American Roger Gallant in 1988 and during those 30 years they have royally entertained at 300 events and helped to raise funds for dozens of charities. Until, that is, the Covid virus stopped them, and everybody else, in their tracks. At one time there were more than 20 singers in the chorus. Now the numbers have been depleted, but there is a hard core of basses, baritones and tenors keen to get going once more. Chorus director Roger said: “This has been a terrible time for everyone. It will be nice to put it all behind us and bring back the life we used to have on the Costa Blanca.” They are keen to attract new members. They don't expect new members to be able to read music – training will be given to those interested in enjoying some close harmony singing among a group of friends. “Of course we try to improve our performance all the time – but we don 't take ourselves too seriously” said Roger, who, in 2017, led the group to victory in a Battle of the Choirs Competition in Teulada. They rehearse once a week, on Thursdays, at 8pm. At the moment rehearsals will be held at the homes of members, until their usual rehearsal venue in Benissa re-opens after the covid emergency. Any interested should call Roger Gallant on 966 497 657 or 669 2179 097 or John Turner on 651 909 819.

Support group launches for people living with dementia
A new support group for partners of people living with dementia has been set up in the Marina Alta region. Living with dementia is tough as partners watch their loved one deteriorate. That's why the Weary Warriors was launched to give emotional support to the carers of those with dementia. For a couple of hours, carers can get away from the stresses they face daily. They can spend a couple of hours in warm companionship with kindred spirits alongside the therapeutic knowledge they are not alone. What is dementia? “Dementia is the loss of intellectual or cognitive ability without alteration of perception or consciousness. Dementia is generally a progressive process and is characterised by impaired memory, orientation, intellectual capacity, and judgment,” according to the Spanish Alzheimer's Confederation (CEAFA). The Weary Warriors group meets every other Tuesday at 10.30am at the Bali restaurant in the Montgó Verd garden centre in Cami Cabanes, Jávea. All carers are invited to come along. Discretion is key and everyone will be made very welcome. The group shares practical information to help make daily life less lonely and more bearable. For further information, please contact Lyn Baerfuss on 692 059 257 or email lynbaerfuss@gmail.com.

Jávea U3A Summer Social a The KAWANA Bar Restaurante has moved…come and see us in our big hit for Jávea Players Jávea U3A put on a grand performance for the Jávea Players, boosting the coffers of the amateur dramatic society by 800€! The money was raised at a Summer Social Evening, organised by the U3A’s Travellers’ Tales group leaders Angela Chantry and Tony Dearie, at the Parador de Jávea on Tuesday 7 September, thanks to members’ donations and a tombola. The fund-raising event was staged in support of the players, who have been hard hit by the pandemic and whose studio in the old town is the venue for the Travellers’ Tales monthly meetings. The money was presented by Angela and Tony to Jávea Players chairman Alistair Wallace. The Summer Social was attended by 78 people - U3A members and representatives of the Jávea Players. The event, which included a three-course dinner served by Parador staff, featured a variety of light-hearted and humorous video clips and music with special emphasis on the lockdown. There was a touching tribute to national heroes Captain Tom Moore, Dame Vera Lynn and the Duke of Edinburgh, all of whom we lost during the pandemic, and a fitting finale to the evening when U3A member Jackie Jeffries sang her own rendition of Vera Lynn’s “We’ll Meet Again” to warm applause from the audience. Find out more about Jávea U3A at www.u3ajavea.com.

And for the kids (and adults!) on 31st October we are having our HALLOWEEN PARTY starting at 6pm. There will be Fancy Dress, Games, Gruesome food for the kids, and a Special Halloween Menu de Noche for the adults. And of course a prize for the best dressed! Every day our Chef, James, produces tasty quality food, including a Great Value DISH OF THE DAY. COSTA BLANCA NORTH
Note from Benny: Time has come for most groups to get back into the swing of things. Mostly positive messages, except for ‘Cantabile Ladies Choir’ and ‘Campoverde Theatre Group’. We wish them both well for the future. Also, I would like to welcome the return of our old favourites, `Barber Shop Singers´ in Benissa. Smiles all round, including those cash starved charities who have also suffered from the lack of entertainment programmes revenue. Barber Shop Singers: The Costa Barber Singers have decided that it is time to restart their post-Covid rehearsals with a view to resuming their massive melody-making and charity work all over the Costa Blanca. Rehearsing on Thursdays in Benissa, the group have royally entertained at 300 events and helped to raise funds for dozens of charities since 1988. How to check if your house is legally built in Spain
Page 38

● Article by Sarah Farrell - www.sarahswritestuff.com
uying a property in Spain is a dream investment with the Costa Blanca region being particularly attractive. With 320 days of sunshine a year, more than 200 kilometres of coastline with glorious sandy beaches, plus fine cuisine and fiestas, it’s no wonder people from all over the world are buying homes on the Costa Blanca.
With around 120,000 illegal properties in the Alicante region and 400,000 illegal homes across the Valencia region, it is important to check that your investment has been legally built. In Spain, there are numerous documents to certify a property is legal, such as: ● A construction permit and certificate to prove the building matches the licence granted by the local council ● A first occupancy licence and habitability certificate that show you can live in the building legally ● Documents signed by utility companies such as electricity, gas, water and phone ● The building is listed in the Property Register as well as a Property Registration certification showing the legal situation of the building If you are buying a new-build in Spain, you should ask the developer for a Commercial Registry certificate to prove the development company exists legally along with details of the administrators,
registered office, fiscal identity number and confirmation there are no claims or lawsuits affecting the development. If the house already exists, ask for a receipt for the previous year’s property tax. If it is on an urbanisation, ask for a certificate from the president of the urbanisation stating your new home is up-todate with all payments. You can contact the Property Registry to find out many details such as a property description, existing mortgages, and any embargoes or litigation affecting the property or urban planning irregularities. You can view Property Registry information online here: https://sede.registradores.org/site/home?lang=en_EN as well as ask for a Registry certificate. Always go to a notary to carry out the purchase and sale of property, and make sure you are registered as the new owner in the Property Register. Using a reputable estate agent and lawyer will avoid problems and leave you to enjoy your dream property.
