THE BEST PRESENTS FOR CHRISTMAS ARE HANDMADE

Original Arts and Craft Fairs in the province of Alicante

If you are looking for original Christmas presents, why not visit one of the Christmas fairs that the Amata artisans association is organising in the province of Alicante. Amata makes a careful selection of artisans to offer you the maximum variety of original products, all made by hand. These fairs will take place with a festive spirit where you can spend a pleasant time with your loved ones, sharing different shows and also purchasing exquisite hand made products. From useful and decorative objects in ceramic, glass, leather, bone or wood, to hand-painted silk, jewellery in different materials, soaps and natural cosmetics and much more. A small but select Christmas Fair will be set up on the Paseo Marítimo in the Port of Jávea, on 8, 9 and 10 December. Each stall will offer something different to ensure there is something to suit everyone's tastes. Since Friday, the 8th, is a bank holiday in Spain, the fair opens all three days from 11am in the morning until 7pm in the afternoon, without closing at midday. The Mercat de Nadal, is an Arts and Crafts Fair that has been held in Altea for many years and this year will be on the weekend of 15, 16 and 17 December. At this fair, which will be set up in the Plaza del Convento near the N332, children can make their own piece of crafts in one of the workshops and enjoy soap bubble shows. In short: - Jávea – on the sea side boulevard in the port Friday 8, Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 December, all three days from 11am until 7pm. - Altea - Plaza del Convento - Friday the 15th, Saturday the 16th and Sunday the 17th of December from 11am until 9pm, on Friday only in the afternoon. Make sure of special, handmade presents this Christmas!

www.femalefocusonline.com We have bled the radiators and got the logs in and will probably do what we do every year - put the log fire on for Christmas day because darling daughter says it is a tradition that cannot be broken. This normally means we are all sitting in t-shirts overheating and promising never to do it again.

My 5 year old grandson saw Santa at a local fair recently and the joy on his face was adorable. He promised to be as good as he could be and just beamed from ear to ear the whole time. His big sister, who is 9, is not totally convinced but is hedging her bets and of course not spoiling the fun for her little brother. She is still writing her letters to Santa and the 3 Kings just in case. The team at Female Focus Publications wish you all a very merry Christmas and New Year and thank you all for supporting us to help support our local businesses and community. Until next time, take care and be kind.

SATURN’S RINGS

Page 6

www.femalefocusonline.com

A couple of months ago I mentioned that this winter would be a good time to have a look at Saturn’s rings, before they appear to close up and become edge on to us for a few years. It wasn't long before I received a few questions asking how this could be, so I'll try to explain. The best way to start is by looking at the solar system from above, with the sun in the centre. The third planet out is the Earth of course, it takes a year to go around the Sun. Saturn is the sixth planet out, it takes nearly 30 years to orbit the sun and like Earth its axis leans over, about 27 degrees in Saturn’s case. As both planets circle our star, we are looking at Saturn from different angles, sometimes seeing the rings angled towards us, sometimes angled away. Between these two there are times, twice in every orbit when we only see the edge of the rings, and that is what we will experience next year. My friend Ron in our astronomy group is a brilliant amateur astrophotographer and over the last few years has taken shots of Saturn. This month’s photo is one of his, and you can see the rings changing from year to year. If you take a moment to look properly, you'll realise that it’s our viewpoint that’s changing. Incidentally, back in 1970 when my love of astronomy became serious, pictures like this just didn’t exist, even the best pictures from the 200 inch telescope at Mt Palomar were nowhere near as good. That’s because each of these pictures is actually many, sometimes hundreds of pictures combined in to one. Each one adds more detail until an expert like Ron gets these results. It’s called image stacking, if you want the technical term. I was also asked where Saturn’s rings came from, that’s an easy one to answer. They are from a disintegrated moon, and only about 400 million years old, that’s like yesterday in astronomy. The lost moon, we call it Chrysalis, broke apart and became all those thousands of bits of rock and ice we see today. Whether Chrysalis was hit by another moon or was torn apart by gravitational forces, what’s called reaching the Roche limit, no one is certain yet. Personally, I think it was torn apart. My last comment about this is from a TV program with Dara O’Briain the comedian and amateur astronomer. He wisely pointed out how a newcomer seeing great pictures of the planets etc might expect to see something similar when looking through a telescope. I’m afraid that isn’t possible, it’s digital photography that’s changed everything, our Mk 1 eyeballs can’t compete with technology. ● To find out more about observing and astronomy why not join our group, email us at vegabaja.astronomygroup@gmail.com to find out more.

Financial Advice from our family to yours 4 considerations for your investment portfolio As we come to the end of another year full of twists and turns, we thought it worthwhile to recap on four key elements that will give any investment the best chance to prosper in 2024. The considerations we delve into below are important at any point in life but especially in times of increased market uncertainty, like we have experienced in the past few years. S Investment strategy: What is your chosen investment objective? Are you looking for income, capital growth, or a combination of the two? Do you have a preference for active or passive management? What is your time horizon for investing? Tip: It is important to know why you are investing and what you are looking to achieve with your money. Those that rely on income from their portfolios will generally take a lower-risk, shorter-term view to investing, whilst those not reliant on income and looking for capital growth only can generally afford to take more risk, with a longer timeframe in mind. S Risk: How much risk are you prepared to take to meet your objectives? How much risk do you need to take? Have you completed a recent risk profile assessment with your adviser? Have your underlying funds been reviewed to ensure they remain in line with your attitude to risk? Tip: It is very easy for a portfolio to stray from its originally intended risk if left unmonitored. There is also a key discussion to be had between the risk an investor is prepared to take and the risk an investor will need to take in order to meet their objectives. An in-depth risk analysis of a portfolio and cashflow modelling (backed up by numbers) can help demonstrate this. S Cost: Are you aware of the cost implications associated with your portfolio, both for the provider and underlying funds? Do you understand how this can significantly affect the net return you see on your portfolio over the longterm? Are you locked into a charging structure with your current provider for “x” number of years? Tip: You may be surprised to learn that the price you pay for holding an identical investment product can differ significantly depending on which financial adviser you use. Whilst a difference in yearly fees of say, 0.50% p.a. may seem innocuous at outset… it can have a massive impact on the net returns an investor would see over the long-term. Pay special attention to the costs of the product and underlying funds, as the last thing an investor wants is to be achieving a decent gross return but seeing half of it swallowed up in fees. S Communication: Have you had conversations with your adviser on the 3 points already mentioned above? Are you kept updated on a regular basis? Do you find it easy to contact your adviser and/or investment provider? Tip: Transparency and regular contact are key factors in establishing and maintaining an effective client/ adviser relationship. Having one point of contact and knowing who you are dealing with lends itself to building a solid relationship based on a firm level of trust. At Logic, we pride ourselves on our award-winning client service and as a family-run business, our clients know who they are dealing with at all times. We regularly run client portfolio reviews and can help clients understand the risks and costs associated with their investments, ensuring they are in the most appropriate position to achieve their financial ambitions.

Hormones are an important part of our body’s messenger system. These chemicals send signals to almost every part of our body, coordinating everything from appetite, digestion, immune function, libido, and mood. When these hormones become even a fraction out of balance, it has a direct impact on our health and well-being. Hormone replacement therapies are prescribed to rebalance the body's hormones. One such, natural therapy is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). These hormones are derived from plant oestrogens and are chemically identical to those produced by the human body. They are designed so our body uses them in the same way it does our own hormones. Oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are among those most replicated and can be administered in various ways. Now available are specialised gels and creams that are tailor made specifically for the individual patient’s needs. BHRT can be used to treat men as well as women but is most frequently used to ease symptoms of perimenopause and menopause. Common symptoms like hot flushes and night sweats, vaginal dryness, sleep problems, concentration issues, mood swings and lack of libido can all be successfully treated. It is also used to ease symptoms of cancer treatment and to treat adrenal, insulin, thyroid disorders, osteoporosis, and fibromyalgia. Experience Christmas in Alicante

Page 9

Alicante is lit up for Christmas with festive lighting in 114 streets and 2,000 decorative signs throughout the city. There’s also a monumental Christmas tree standing 18-metres high in Avenida de la Constitución and a large, but friendlylooking, bear in the Plaza de la Montañeta. Alicante is well-known for the number of nativity scenes (belén) dotted around the city and this year there is a giant one in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. This monumental nativity scene has held a Guinness record since it was created in 2020 by artist José Manuel García "Pachi". It is officially the tallest nativity scene in the world, thanks to the figure of Joseph, who stands at 18 metres high. Mary is just over 10 metres, while the baby Jesus leaning in his cradle is 3.25 metres. Whilst soaking up the Christmas atmosphere in Alicante, there are also plenty of chances for some festive shopping. Alicante has a wide range of top brands and independent stores in and around Avenida Maisonnave, as well as several shopping centres such as Puerta de Alicante and Gran Vía, and the El Corte Inglés department store. Highly recommended is a visit to the bustling central market with more than 250 stalls selling local fruit, vegetables, meat and fish. Article by Sarah Farrell - www.sarahswritestuff.com

In Spain, more than 2.000.000 people over 65 live alone.

For most of us, the season to be jolly has arrived. A time to spend with friends and family. A time to enjoy good food, good company and good conversation. Yet for many it is the season of loneliness, solitude and despair. For many, the urbanisations they live in were flourishing communities. Now the homes around them have become holiday homes, that are seldom visited. Now they live in ghost towns rarely seeing anyone. Now many of the elderly dread the coming season. So this season please take a walk around your area and look for people that are living alone. Look for people that would appreciate a chat or a cuppa. Spend a short time listening to their stories. It has amazed me the adventures some people have lived. A short amount of your time could be the best present some people will receive this season. I believe retirement communities are a fantastic solution. They offer a caring, protected location. Most of the retirement facilities here in Spain are not becoming quiet communities. In fact most are becoming full and homes are getting harder to find. Retirement communities offer you a home, where you can enjoy your independence, with the support and a thriving community. If you are a social butterfly there are always people around. If not, then the staff are always there for you. Stephen is the Marketing Manager at the Colina Club in Calpe. Why not give him a call; arrange a tour; where he can answer any questions and explain the benefits of living at the Colina Club. There's no obligation, of course, and certainly no pressure. But, together you may figure out the perfect situation for your next stage of life. So, call him today on 96 583 5226 or send him an email to Stephen@ColinaClub.com.

What is your style? Classic elegant, dramatic, traditional, creative? At Sé Tú we believe the most important style is being individual and wearing whatever makes you feel good! Be you! Clothes are one way we express our individuality and personality, it’s interesting to see how our personal style develops over time. We may be influenced by fashion trends, though our style is often a process of trial and error, we all have photos that we say ‘what was I thinking to wear that!’ As we age we often stay with a style that is familiar and comfortable for us, we may be hesitant to try new looks, often not helped by friends or family comments ‘that’s not you’. Our bodies often change shape over time along with hair colour, so at Sé Tú we are here to lend a hand if required, whether it's experimenting with prints, new colours or different silhouettes. It can be refreshing to be nudged outside your comfort zone and try something new but ultimately the choice is yours and we are not pushy! Sé Tú is a very different shopping experience from chain stores or shopping online. We don’t stock racks of the same items, so a browse through our rails will always bring up surprises. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

It certainly is in The English Choir diary. “We are greatly in demand for the Festive Season, but it gives the local Marina Alta community more chances to come and enjoy one of our performances. It also helps us to raise further funds for the local charities that we continue to support”, said the Choir’s publicity Officer. Hot on the heels of their successful “The Bond Experience”, the Choir are straight into rehearsals for the Yuletide events. They kick-off the appearances in Teulada on Wednesday 6th December where they have been invited to take part in the “Switching on the Lights” in the town square at 6pm. The Choir’s Secretary added “this is a lovely event, with local groups taking part, lots of the neighbours coming out to join in, and it is right in front of the Choir’s rehearsal room, so we don’t have to travel far that evening”. On Sunday 10th, The English Choir will be supporting the Lions Club in Moraira, another outside event, in the Church Square which starts at 6:00pm. Another charity event, with local groups/artists taking part, and usually a mulled-wine stall to keep the chill at bay. By Tuesday, 12th December, the Choir has moved further through Moraira, for their now annual “Christmas Sing-a-long” at Saxo’s. Starting at 4:00pm this is a fun event of Christmas songs, carols, audience participation and of course the full support of the Saxo Bar and staff. Come along, enjoy a mulled wine, join in, even have a dance if you want to. With supporters “shaking the buckets” this free event has raised hundreds of euros over the last 2 years, and is a real popular event on the calendar. The Choir’s final event of the season is their Christmas Concert which this year will be held in Benitatchell Church on Saturday 16th December at 5:30pm. This traditional style concert of choir classics and favourite carols is always a well supported evening. Tickets for the event will be available shortly on the website (englishchoir.com) or on the door priced at 10€. If you would like to join a choir, then why not choose The English Choir? Look us up on Facebook, the website, or WhatsApp to 603 842 693 for more details. How fast the time comes round, it's the very well established Christmas Antiques and Collectors Fair in Salones Canor, Calle Assegador, Teulada, 03725. It takes place on 6 December, doors open at 0900hrs and close at 1500hrs. We are pleased to say it's a complete sell out, every stand is taken so it promises to be a spectacular fair. It's an opportunity to support local charities too as we have several charities selling donated items to raise much needed funds Parking and entry are free. There is a good selection of bar snacks available and lovely gardens to sit in and enjoy them. Michel our super plant man will be there selling a great variety of plants, shrubs and saplings. Come and enjoy this very special Christmas Fair. We look forward to seeing you there. Any queries call Paul on 626 795 587, he will be delighted to help you.

A new president at the helm at Calpe U3A

Putting the fizz into the festive season

If you’re looking for Christmas bubbles to see in the New Year - or to enjoy at any time of year - Spain produces a fine amount of sparkling wine and cava to rival champagne for its quality and, certainly, for its price. A good quality sparkling wine is produced in the Jalon valley. Bodegas Xaló’s Bahía Brut Nature sparkling wine is made with the Moscatel grape variety, typical of the Marina Alta. You can get six bottles online from Bodegas Xaló for €34.80. Other cava to sample include the award-winning Codorniu Ars Collecta Grand Rosé 2020, or brands such as Reyes de Aragón, Gramona and Vilarnau. For wine connoisseurs it is worth looking out for the different categories of cava, defined by the aging of each bottle. Cava de Guarda is aged for a minimum of 9 months; Cava de Guarda Superior is aged for more than 18 months (Reserva) or 30 months (Gran Reserva); and the prestigious Cava de Paraje Calificado, that has been aged for more than 36 months. One thing that sets cava apart from most sparkling wines is the traditional production method, as well as the quality of the grapes. Known as méthode champenoise, from its French origins, the traditional method involves a second fermentation in the bottle. Bodegas Xaló sparkling wine is also made with the champenoise or traditional method. Cava goes well with paella or any fish or shellfish dish as well as with chocolate or strawberries. Alternatively, it can be drunk on its own as the perfect partner at any celebration.

Royal British Legion (RBL) Javea Branch Community Support (BCS) Case Study – Ted Strong

This year’s Poppy Appeal has ended, thanks to all who have supported this year's appeal. If you ever wonder how the Royal British Legion can help veterans and their families here in Spain, this is just one example. The following words were written by Ted’s son on behalf of them both: 'The support for my father ‘Ted Strong’ from the RBL has been an absolute wonder over the past year or so, his buddy Chris has been fantastic and a great help in many ways, providing comfort and security in friendship and company. Functions attended have been amazing and fun and on behalf of my dad we would like to thank everyone. Please take our compliment as a father and son team for helping Ted Strong over the past year. Ted is a proud member of the British Legion and all it stands for and will remain part of the organisation in the long term for sure.' Chris Leinster, Javea Branch Community Support Volunteer explains what being a volunteer means to him: 'I became a Branch Community Support Volunteer, to help out and be a friendly face, visiting older or less mobile veterans of the Javea Branch of the Royal British Legion. Ted Strong is 97 years old, an independent ex-serviceman who is supported by his family, although none of them live here in Spain. Ted now lives alone, so I support Ted with phone calls and visiting him at home, sometimes taking him out for coffee. The BCS role is a pleasure, it’s a great chance to make new friends and give something back to the wider ex-military community. As my regimental motto goes "Quis Separabit" who "shall separate us".' The photo shows Chris Leinster on the left and on the right Ted Strong.

Celebrating Christmas Xàbia style By Rhona Wells - rhonawells@hotmail.com

Christmas fever begins on the 8th of December in Xàbia, where the holiday season is a perfect blend of the religious and joyous, befitting the birth of a child. The date is a national holiday across Spain marking the Immaculate Conception of Jesus Christ. It is when the Christmas lights are switched on, the Christmas trees go up and traditional nativity scenes appear all around Xàbia. The bélen is an elaborate nativity scene, which takes pride of place in many Spanish homes. Walking around the narrow streets of Xàbia’s historic centre you will see many of them displayed proudly in the front windows. Passers by will spend lengthy periods of time scrutinising the model, usually because they are searching for ‘El Caganer’ – the ‘crapper’ –a cheeky figurine crouching in a dark corner or under a shady tree, with trousers down and backside exposed. This tradition dates to the early 18th century and is said to symbolise fertility as well as being a harbinger of good luck and prosperity for the year ahead. On Christmas Eve Spanish families traditionally come together to celebrate the birth of the Saviour, with a huge feast. It was traditional to serve ‘pavo trufado’, turkey stuffed with truffles, but these days it is more frequently roasted lamb or a suckling pig, after an opening course of seafood or a plate of hams, chorizos and local cheeses. The meal is often concluded with ‘turrón’, a toasted sweet almond nougat, or ‘polvorones’, which are sweets made from almonds, flour and sugar. At 9.00pm, the Spanish Monarch gives the traditional Christmas message from the Palacio de la Zarzuela. Across Spain, just before midnight, Church bells ring out to summon everyone to a special mass known as ‘La Misa de Gallo ‘– the ‘Mass of the Rooster’ – reflecting the notion that a rooster crowed vociferously on the night that Jesus was born. December 28th is akin to April Fool’s Day in the UK, with newspapers and TV news channels running ridiculous but almost believable stories. However, the date (Dia de las Inocentes), also commemorates the day when new-born babies – the innocents – were massacred on the orders of King Herod in his attempt to kill the infant Jesus. For the past few years, Xàbia has celebrated the arrival of the new year twice in the same day. At midday on New Year’s Eve, December 31st, families gather in the heart of the historic centre to hear the bells chime twelve times, thus marking the new year on the other side of the planet. In this way, young children who might otherwise be asleep at midnight, can enjoy their own early New Year’s Eve celebration with music dancing and the eating of treats, including orange segments. Twelve hours later, as the chimes ring midnight, the tradition is to eat twelve grapes, one popped into the mouth on each chime of the bells, and it is suggested that you will have good luck for the following year if you manage to eat all twelve by the end of the chimes. “Las Doce Uvas de la Suerte!” Some 80% of these ‘lucky’ grapes are grown in the Vinalopó valley just a 100km southwest of Xàbia. It is the custom to wear red underwear on New Year’s Eve and such garments must have been gifted to you by someone else. It is also traditional to drop a gold object into a glass of cava before the midnight toast to bring good luck; drink the entire glass after 12 o’clock and you will have good fortune. If you are looking for love, drop in a strawberry, cherry or raspberry. Also remember to kick off the new year by taking the first step after the bells chime with your right foot – and if you’re out for the evening, make sure you re-enter your home with the right foot first. The Christmas festivities end with the arrival of the Three Kings and the feast of Epiphany on the 6th of January and, perhaps more importantly for the children, the arrival of Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar – the Three Kings from the Orient, often known as the Wise Men – bearing gifts. A perfect end to a perfect holiday season.

RBL Jávea Remembrance Services

The Jávea branch of The Royal British Legion held three Services of Remembrance, firstly in Moraira on Friday 10th November where they were joined by the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir. On Sunday 12th November in the morning at Cumbre Del Sol, Benitachell and in the afternoon in Jávea accompanied by the pianist Abi Fletcher and the Lady Elizabeth School Choir. Both the Moraira & Jávea Services were led by Padre Jim Booker and were accompanied by the Royal Air Force Association, the Air Crew Association and the Royal Navy Association and their Standards. Wreaths were placed at the altar by the associations along with Julie Keene & Liz Trafford from the Feral Cats Association representing Animals at War. All three services in total attracted over 300 ex service personnel, their families, friends and many others paying their respects. The photos show: 1. Tuck into Christmas turrón

Turrón is the must-have sweet treat for Christmas in Spain. Made with honey, sugar, egg whites and almonds, it makes a delicious alternative to a tin of chocolates to enjoy while watching festive films. The best turrón is made in the small town of Jijona, about 30 kilometres inland from Alicante, where you can visit the Turrón Museum for a complete history of the Christmas sweet while seeing how it is made. Favourite brands are El Lobo and 1880, owned by the Sirvent family. The family has been making turrón since 1725, sharing the traditional recipes for 11 generations. Turrón comes in hard and soft varieties and a variety of flavours such as coconut, chocolate, dried fruits and nuts. To make sure you are buying top-class turrón, look for a stamp saying Jijona Denominacion de Origen y Geografica Protegida, which guarantees authenticity and quality. To satisfy a chocolate craving, you can visit the Valor chocolate museum in Villajoyosa to learn about the history of Valor chocolate since its conception in 1881 and get to sample the produce. Valor’s appeal can be summed up in one word: quality. Valor uses the finest cocoa beans from around the world to produce the best chocolate. The higher the cocoa content the better and Valor chocolates contain at least 35% cocoa solids to give a rich, luxurious flavour. Staying on the ‘buy local’ theme, you can get succulent dates from the largest palm grove in Europe, which is in Elche, and has more than 200,000 trees. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000 and some trees are more than 300 years old. Article by Sarah Farrell - www.sarahswritestuff.com

We supply artificial grass because I am a garden designer and landscaper who understands not only how to put together a beautiful garden but what clients, especially in Spain, want. I also understand the true Facts and Costs involved with natural lawns. Artificial grass has, and not without some good reason, come under fire from a lot of environmentalists as it's plastic, meaning it's oil based. Also, some cheaper products manufactured in other countries can be made using materials which you don't want in your garden, but that doesn't mean it's all bad. A natural lawn may breath out oxygen while it's growing, but have you seen just how much CO2 and Methane is released from rotting lawns in landfill sites. It's massive, it is one of the worst contributors, to global CO2 emissions. Meanwhile, our artificial grass which other than being made in the first place, has had zero to little impact on the environment. It's very easy to paint a hideous picture of a plastic made product but unless you read the whole story to the end, you may not realise that the hideous bad guy is actually not, it gives comfort, greenery and instantaneous pleasure to families without the hassle, chemical usage or emissions output made by natural grass. So, unless you’re prepared to WILD out your garden, then come and speak to us for a lawn that looks great all year, with no maintenance, no further costs, no water usage and no chemical usage. Walk Your Way Well with Niamh O'Sheehan

It's coming into the "jolly" season and you are already getting nervous about how your dear old body is going to survive the festive season. So many of us NEED to embrace the Dry January challenge after the month of December leaves us rattling. But, so many of us fail to succeed in going dry, or even damp! I've been there and worn the T-shirt year after year. Trying and failing. Until I finally cracked it. Want to know how? I had support. I found an accountability group of people who all wanted the same thing. And we helped, nudged, dragged and supported each other through. It was fun and I succeeded in giving my body the break it needed from the alcohol bombardment. And I loved it! I am a massive advocate for accountability groups. I never seem to succeed on my own, and I love the idea of having like-minded people in a shared community to enjoy the experience together. And for that reason, over the past few years, I have been running my own Dry January support group. What is it? An accountability group for Dry January is a supportive community of individuals who have chosen to abstain from alcohol for the entire month of January. For a small investment, you get the support you need to help you learn, commit, enjoy, and succeed to stay alcohol-free for one month. If you know you will struggle to do it alone then why not sign up? This group serves as a source of motivation, encouragement, and accountability to help members stay on track with their goal. I'm there to hold your hand every step of the way. I am a qualified Positive Psychology coach with specialist training in alcohol-free coaching. It is so satisfying to celebrate milestones together. The main ethos behind my group is to create a safe and non-judgmental space for members to openly share their experiences, seek guidance, and receive positive support from like-minded individuals who are also committed to a sober January. IMPORTANT: Aside from the daily group support, you also receive a personal, 1-2-1 Zoom coaching session with me. This is always an amazingly rewarding session and offers brilliant moments of self-discovery. The goal of my January "Resolution Revolution" group is to provide a supportive community that fosters personal growth and helps members successfully complete a month without alcohol. With my help, and the help of the group, I know you can do it. Every year we have so many success stories and we learn a great deal. It becomes less of a "white knuckle ride" and more of a self-development journey. Please drop me a WhatsApp if you'd like to join. Numbers are very limited so I can give you the personal attention you deserve. And with an affordable price tag, you won't be disappointed. Niamh O'Sheehan - WhatsApp +34 676 507 791. U3A Denia

More than seventy members of U3A Denia had a great afternoon and early evening in the garden of La Bresca in Els Poblets on Sunday 11th November. Entertained by Dave Manhattan, whilst enjoying a wonderful tapas and wine menu. The sun shone and everyone got into the spirit of the event with a well supported raffle on behalf of the Red Cross, and lots of dancing in the sunshine. Once again Pick n Mix performed for free in Pego at the Christmas market in aid of APROP. Pick n Mix are a group of amateur musicians that are made up of members from The Jukes of El Verger, a ukulele group, and the Denia U3A Guitar group. Members play each week and attempt to improve their techniques under the guidance of Cazzie the group leader and Doug Kerr who kindly offers advice and technical support. Many free concerts are performed throughout the year in aid of various charities. Our Photograph from left to right is Mike, Pat, Graham, Richard, Bob, Cazzie, Lynn, Ann, Doug, Mabel and Clare. THE MOFTAG CLUB OF CALPE CELEBRATES ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL CHRISTMAS FAYRE

Page 29

Sunshine and tinsel glistened at the Moftag Christmas Fayre held on Saturday 18th November at Pub Delfin in Calpe. The total amount raised was 2374€ which was largely due to the Raffle ticket sales generated. Moftag is renowned for the high quality of their raffle and this year was no exception with many beautiful gifts and vouchers. In addition to the raffle there were many stalls selling homemade cakes, sausage rolls, chutneys and marmalades, hand knitted items and beautiful greeting cards. The Bric a Brac stall did very well with a huge selection of jewellery available, and on the fun and entertainment side there were lots of games which were enjoyed by all ages. A fairly new addition was Santa's Sac which was filled with goodies and participants had to guess the weight of the sack. The person closest to the correct weight got to take the sack of goodies home! Moftag sincerely thanks all those loyal members of the local community who regularly support them. As always all the money raised goes to support local Calpe charities such as Cruz Roja Calpe, Maite Boronat, Caritas and the Lynwen Cancer Care nurses. Moftag is THE longest running English Speaking ladies club in Calpe having been in existence for 45 years and they have a strong social club which meets every Wednesday. If you would like more information about Moftag please contact the president Jenny Godfrey on mobile 639 139 518, new members are most welcome!

If you have spare time on your hands please contact your local pet charity to see how you can help out. They are always in need of more volunteers to walk the dogs, stroke the cats, meet the horses or help with cleaning out the kennels and stables. If you have an idea for fund raising they would love to hear from you. Vince is a sweet boy who is so easy to walk on the leash and who adores female dogs but sadly has seen many girlfriends go to their forever homes. We recommend that Vince goes to a home where there are no small children, or cats. Please contact Akira on 657 689 567 or email akirashelter@aol.com for more information on any of our dogs. Paul born approx 05/15 is a medium sized well socialised podenco. He has not yet seen a lot of the world and he would definitely need some education. But he would certainly make a good family dog when given enough time to get acquainted with his new environment. Please call 618 754 635 or visit www.apasa.eu. Jelly Bean is approx one year old. She is a friendly loving cat who follows you around looking for company and chats! She is sterilised and domesticated and would make a perfect addition to any family. For more info call PEPA on 650 304 746 or email p.e.p.a.animalcharity@gmail.com. Meet Our Horses! Join us on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings at APAC Rescue Horses to see the horses and help support us. Everyone Welcome. For more info email apacprotectora@gmail.com, visit www.apac-cv.com or Facebook: Apac Rescue Horses.

We have many lovely cats and kittens. Shelter open every Sunday 10am - 12pm, whatsapp Luisa 669 376 113 for more information. Denia Cat Protection League – Aldea Felina, please visit www.aldeafelina.es Meet Vito. He is a beautiful, big and affectionate traditional podenco. He has a normal sweet character, but dislikes cats. He is castrated and ready to meet you! Want to know more about our Vito, or our other dogs? Contact us on Facebook 'Tanamera Rescue' or by email stichtingtanamera@gmail.com. This is Alfa, he is around one and a half years old. He is so loving and loves to be with people and have cuddles. If you are interested in meeting any of our dogs, or can volunteer please visit Benidorm Animal Shelter between 10am-1pm, Monday-Friday. Tel: 965 856 268. www.protectorabenidorm.org Amor is everything you could want in a Staffy. Loving, playful, full of character, sociable with every dog she meets and with that wonderful Staffy smile. Just a young girl she has already been with us for too long, she is more than ready for a home. For more information please email apropego@gmail.com, or call 654 616 043.
