The Summer Solstice By the time this little article reaches print it won't be very long until the Summer Solstice, or midsummer's day as most of us call it. Have you ever wondered why one particular day is the longest (and the opposite in winter)? It's something we just grow up with and take for granted. The working out of this was probably mankind's first astronomical puzzle, and it happened a very long time ago. Contrary to popular belief, ancient people, or at least those lucky enough to have had an education, did not think the earth was flat, they knew it was spherical. Just observing the horizon from a mountain was enough of a clue. This is something you can try for yourself. Find somewhere as high as possible with a view over the sea, and take a long straight edge with you, at least two metres long. Get someone to hold it up against the horizon and you can see, and just about measure the curvature of our planet. Ages ago people performed experiments and once Humankind had some elementary mathematics, they worked it out. There were several measurements done over 2,500 years ago that were remarkably accurate, most famously by Eratosthenes in Alexandria who took measurements when the sun was exactly overhead in two different places and did simple geometry to work out the size of the planet, very accurate he was too. Anyone interested can Google his name and find the whole story. Understanding something about the seasons was a necessity of survival for mankind, especially once farming began. One of the many ideas about Stonehenge, and the hundreds of other stone circles that existed, was that they helped predict the seasons. Once it was understood that the earth was a sphere, and that the sunrises and sunsets were in different places along the horizon as we went through the year, it was obvious that the Earth must turn at an angle to the Sun so that anywhere would get more sunshine and longer days in the summer (in the Northern hemisphere). It's important that we all remember that ancient humans were not less intelligent than us, they just had less information to work with. That angle I mentioned is called Earth's axial inclination, or to put it another way, Earth is tilted over with respect to our orbit around the Sun. If Earth wasn't tilted like this, there would be no seasons as we know them, our weather would be drastically different and possibly Humankind would not exist at all. Incredible what a difference a few degrees makes isn't it? Vega Baja Astronomy Group. Email vegabaja.astronomygroup@gmail.com.

Well as predicted Easter certainly was a washout, which really didn't go down too well with my family as we had planned a BBQ for my niece's 30th birthday on Easter Sunday. Fortunately we had plenty of covered area and an exterior gas heater to huddle around so we didn’t let the rain stop us. There’s one thing for sure, she certainly won't forget her 30th birthday party in a hurry! As I am writing this I am preparing for our trip to Mojacar, but as the weather is still a little unpredictable I’m really not sure what clothes to take with us. We are only there for 2 nights but I think it will be looking like we are going for a week as I am packing both jeans and shorts for each eventuality, let's hope it's the shorts that get the wear out of them. During May, my little angel will be competing in several dance competitions which will be taking place in Torrevieja, Benidorm and Albacete. It will the first time for her taking part in competitions, so no doubt nerves will be running a little high. Unfortunately the old bridge in Rojales is still not open and there is little idea as to when it will. Apparently there have been some problems with infrastructure so it is very doubtful it will be resolved in the near future. To say this has had an impact on all the businesses in that area would be an understatement, however through their persistence they have managed to free up more car parking area. As well as this it has proved an issue for passing traffic that is being diverted and causing chaos on the roads ...let's hope it doesn't continue for much longer. Congratulations to Marge Wright from Orihuela Costa who won last month's 50€ competition after spotting the logo on page 21. See if you can spot the logo in this issue for a chance to win 50€, see inside for details of how to enter. Good luck!

It's not just the Beatles who had a problem with the TAXMAN

Near the end of March this year a client of mine from Catral had an unannounced and unwelcome visit from the TAX MAN for reasons described below. This is not fictional – it is absolutely true. The tax officials didn't speak English (and why should they – we are in Spain) but they wanted my client to sign forms which he didn't understand, however, he stayed calm and composed and resolutely refused to sign. He then contacted his gestoria, who said that they had had “some communication” with the tax department. Evidentally, my client had previously filed an Asset Declaration Modelo 720 form (for assets outside of Spain over 50,000€ in property, investments and cash) some years ago but has not filed one since as his gestoria had not reminded him to. However, my client cannot legally blame the gestoria, as having previously filed a Modelo 720, the law apparently regards my client as aware of his ongoing obligations. Spain being Spain, a raft of paperwork is now being produced, much of it having been done so previously and my client is understandably worried. Luckily, it appears he is not guilty of misleading the authorities but simply not reporting some minor changes in details, such as account numbers, which are still however, liable to a fine. Thankfully the Spanish Compliant products that he does own (which Blacktower initiated) have an internal self reporting mechanism and have no breach of tax reporting issues. It remains to be seen what further anguish and fines he will be subjected to but after a home visit from these Government department officials he will be more than happy to clear the problem by just paying a fine as the entire experience has been extremely unpleasant for all those concerned. When investing, most people are primarily concerned with the return they will get on their money, but the bigger picture for us as advisers is the way the investment is packaged to save you and your heirs similar problems to those I have described. If we do recommend any investment vehicles it is simply a matter of using

the correct Spanish Compliant products or “Wrappers” as we call them and even though the products are Spanish Compliant, they are not held in Spain, but normally Ireland. So, if you do have large sums of cash held outside of Spain not earning a return but which you do not want to bring into Spain, give me a call to find out what we can recommend based on your own personal circumstances. This article does not constitute an offer to sell the above product and any product recommendations will absolutely be based on your family circumstances and objectives. Habitation Licenses Registration Tax Currently the submission (registration receipt) of having applied for a Habitation Licence (not the licence itself), is required to sign for a property sale at any Notary within Alicante. The document, also called Habitation Licence or Habitation Cedule, is achieved by submitting a dossier with the compilation of the Title Deeds, water and electricity bills, annual Townhall tax, and NIE, one or more certificates by an Architect and sometimes complete plans of the property. Requirements and the amount of Registration Tax necessary for the certificate vary greatly between the different municipalities. Here is a list of the most common Townhall registration taxes in the area: - Rojales: 50€ plus, plus the planning department now asks for updated floor plans of the property. - Orihuela: From 102 - 111€ (depending on build size) - San Miguel de Salinas: 100€ - Daya Nueva: 50€ - Rojales: 50€ - Torrevieja: 17.50€ - San Isidro: 50€ - San Fulgencio: 50€ - Formentera del Segura: 60€ - Jacarilla: 30€. - Bigastro: 25€ Registration Tax is paid to the Townhall before having the licence issued. Note that Registration taxes are not applicable to IVA. Martinez de la Casa Architects offers the Habitation Licence registered document you need to sell at the Notary within 7-10 working days, services priced from 118 (IVA included), depending on the Townhall, requirements and registration tax which is not included. What is positive thinking? Positive thinking is not something we are born doing! It is something though, that like most things, you can learn over time. Hopefully by reading this things will be come clearer, as there was a time when I hadn’t a clue what it was all about, but I was willing to learn, and it HAS changed the quality of my life! You can learn it too if you want to ….your choice! I'm sure many of you have heard of positive thinking and probably have read books about the subject. Many people believe that positive thinking is something you do occasionally ….when things go wrong, and this may seem to be a step forward - but it's not enough to bring about positive results in your life. Why not? Because positive thinking is not something that you turn to when things go wrong. Positive thinking is a full time practice! That's right a practice! Positive thinking is something you have to do everyday as often as possible when ever you can! Wake up thinking good things and go to sleep the same way! Many Doctors now believe that having a positive attitude can improve your health. It has amazing effects on people who have had surgery. They found that patients who thought they would do well after surgery - did do well. Those who thought they wouldn't do so well - didn't fare well. So how do we make positive thinking a part of our daily lives so that we stop defeating ourselves and make our lives better? Actually it's quite easy – it's just a matter of learning and applying. Don’t forget, we CREATE everything that goes on in our minds. That's right ...YOU create it. Everything you think about is there by your choice. So begin by getting rid of those negative thoughts and negative beliefs, which serve you no purpose, except to make you miserable. Then you'll be able to begin having a positive attitude and start enjoying life again. Remember: take control of your thoughts and you change your life. Start today - don't waste another moment creating the life you don't want. Remember - this is it …… Life is too precious to waste! Until the next time!

Two out of every ten Traffic Accidents have Consequences on the Spinal Column due to Cervical Whiplash

This type of lesion presents symptoms such as neck pain, headaches, dizziness and tingling in the hands. In Spain, there are approximately 150,000 people injured a year in traffic accidents. Though traffic accident lesions can be multiple, and vary greatly, 20% of these tend to have consequences on the spinal column due to cervical whiplash, followed by dorsal and lumbar lesions, we are told by the specialists in Quirónsalud Hospitals’ Traffic Units. Whiplash is caused by the mechanism of a sharp hypertension of the neck, followed by an also sudden flexion of the same, or vice versa. “The extremely violent tensile mechanism to which the head and neck are submitted creates maximum tensions, and can even injure the muscles and ligaments of the neck, which are unable to resist this sharp stretching force, causing what is known as cervical sprain,” explains Doctor Carlos Puell, Specialist in the Rehabilitation Service and Specialist in the Traffic Unit at Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja. As for the symptoms of this type of lesion, Doctor Mayte Resta, Head of the Accident and Emergency Service and Specialist in the Traffic Unit at Hospital Quirónsalud Valencia, highlights dorsalcervical pain, occipitofrontal headaches (like an oppressive crown), limited cervical mobility, in rotation as well as a feeling of not being able to support the weight of the head, dizziness and tingling in the hands. Likewise, she adds that “the fact of experiencing a traffic accident causes a psychological impact that can produce another series of symptoms related to stressful situations, such as anxiety or refusal to ride in or drive a vehicle again”. Traffic accidents, due to acceleration and deceleration forces, can cause acute injuries or complicate pre-existing lesions. Early assessment and implementation of treatment is essential to minimise physical sequela. According to Doctor Diego Gómez,

Specialist in the Traffic Unit and Rehabilitation Physician at Quirónsalud Murcia, “From the medical perspective, it is crucial for any patient involved in a traffic accident to come in for an urgent medical assessment, whatever the severity his or her lesions present”. The recovery period for this type of lesion can go from two months to a much longer, harder to determine period. Treatment is based on a combination of analgesics and anti-inflammatories, together with rehabilitation therapy, such as ultrasound, currents, neck exercises and posture hygiene norms. “But despite having undergone adequate treatment, sometimes, and for multiple reasons, cervical sprains do not heal, and can have several sequelae, such as cervical pain, dizziness and headaches. Any lesion, no matter how mild, runs the risk of becoming a permanent sequela in time if it is not treated adequately and by the right team of professionals.” points out Doctor Puell. Tips for Safe Driving The specialists from Quirónsalud Traffic Units advise following these recommendations before any automobile trip to ensure safe driving: • Rest: Do not start a trip if you are not properly rested. Likewise, we recommend taking a break every hour and a half, to stretch. Stop at the first sign of tiredness. • Choose light meals, and do not consume any alcoholic beverages, even those with low alcoholic grade. • Sit in a correct position at the wheel: your legs must be slightly bent, and the back adjusted so that your wrists reach the upper part of the steering wheel. • Dress in loose, comfortable clothing, and wear adequate shoes.

Do you need help and advice on Taxes and Pensions? Read on Tax for residents... If you have been living in Spain for six months (183 days) or more of the calendar year (not necessarily consecutively) or you have your main vital interests in Spain (for example, family or business is in Spain) then you are classed as a Spanish resident for tax purposes. As a Spanish resident, you will need to submit a Spanish tax return and declare all assets abroad worth more than â‚Ź50,000. Your taxable income is the income left after deductions for contributions to social security, pension, personal allowance, and professional costs. Spanish tax rates are progressive. Non residents... If you live in Spain for less than six months (183 days) in a calendar year, you are classed as a non-resident and will only be taxed on the income you earn in Spain. Your income is taxed at flat rates with no allowances or deductions. If you are a non-resident and own a property, whether or not you rent it out, you will need to submit a tax return and pay Spanish property taxes for non-residents. Spanish Property Tax If you own a property here and are living in it on 1 January in any given year, you will be liable to pay a local property tax. The amount is the rental value multiplied by a tax rate set by the local authorities. This applies to non-residents and residents. If you sell a property in Spain, you have to pay a property transfer tax, (ITP). When a property is sold, the local authority charges a tax on the increase in value of the land, (plus valia). We also offer advice on Pension transfer, Tax returns, Tax registration, Income tax, Duel taxation, Capital gains and Wealth tax. How we can help... Here at The Agency we are dedicated to making sure you have the correct information for anything TAX or PENSION related. We have an in house regulated advisor who works face to face with our clients to make sure you are paying the correct tax. Forthcoming Events By Keith Nicol After the Easter washout, life seems to have returned to normal, we have our hour back and the days are longer, along with warmer weather and suddenly the Mediterranean cafe lifestyle has returned. There are lots of different local entertainments going on but some of the major ones we highlight here. 26 May is certainly a date for the diary. Not only is it the day for local, regional and European Elections but 80's singer and number one recording artist Paul Young visits Torrevieja for the first time. His Paul Young and Friends show features tribute acts to the Gypsy Kings and David John's tribute to Rod Stewart, local dance company Footwork Dance feature more than 40 dancers performing a routine from Lord of the Dance, plus American recording artist Oneida James is here with her band. Oneida has worked all over the world and toured with Joe Cocker for 14 years. More details from: https://auditoriotorrevieja.com/eventos/paulyoung-and-friends-variety-concert/. On Friday, 10 May, The State Theatre of Dance present the Cossacks of Russia. Almost fifty artists, including singers, dancers and acrobats, dressed in impressive traditional costumes from different Cossack regions will be on stage. Cossacks of Russia is a very well known company in more than 30 countries. In addition, it is the only dance company that represented Russia at the Great Gala of the 60th Anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II in May 2013. The following night, 11 May, Torrevieja's Symphonic Orchestra perform in the auditorium. They present a special concert of Música Española, Concierto de Aranjuez and Zarzuelas. If you have not visited the Titanic Quarter in Belfast, one of the next best Titanic Expos will be taking place in Alicante. The

QF Focus Magazine exhibition 'Titanic, The Reconstruction' helps you to discover what life was like aboard the Titanic and takes place from 22 May to 10 November, in the Lonja del Pescado, the Fish Market Hall, in the Port of Alicante. It is an extensive and emotional exhibition that invites the visitor to experience life on board the Titanic, through objects, stories and real scenarios. The exhibition will have a model of the ship, the largest in the world, built at 1:30 scale, which is 12 metres long, 4.20 high and 3.90 wide. It will also have the original 'Titanic car', which was manufactured in Detroit (USA), in 1909. It is a Brush D.24, recognised as the oldest car in the world that can still circulate. Another of the jewels of the exhibition will be Enrique Gran's original painting 'El Sueño del Titanic'. The exhibition, in turn, includes real objects of the passengers who sailed on board the ship, as well as the stories of the survivors of the sinking. More info: http://www.fundaciontitanic.com. our ARIES Finances come into focus when a 'too good to be true' opportunity comes along. You are not taken in by it but it does make you address your investments and future monetary aims. Control issues also come to the fore and you realise that changes need to be made. TAURUS Putting aside problems of your own and helping out someone really is rewarding and puts things into perspective for you. It also makes you realise that sharing your problems with someone else might be just what you need. GEMINI You have to work harder and smarter to get where you want to go this month but your perseverance will get you there. Avoiding a confrontation means accepting something you don't really agree with - but it's worth it this time. CANCER Don't let your emotions sway your decisions, especially where business and money are involved. Ask for your colleagues' opinion if you are struggling as they will see things more objectively. LEO There is no need to show off by using big words and gestures. Being understated will actually get you further. Listening without interrupting will leave people will a much better impression of you. VIRGO Ideas will be flowing and even though you want to share them with the world, be careful who you tell. Don't let the everyday things get left behind in the excitement of all these new goals.

oroscope LIBRA If you don't concentrate on the details then any new plans are destined to fail. The bigger the plan, the bigger the failure so stop and go over it before you commit. As the saying goes measure twice, cut once and you will end up with a successful outcome. SCORPIO The month gets off to a great start but you need to stop over thinking things as they are not always as bad as you end up making them. You will only make things worse for everyone and create conflict where there is none. SAGITTARIUS Although you will defend your family and friends almost at all cost, it is just that almost. This time though the line has been crossed and you will not be drawn into this argument. Keeping a back seat is the best idea in this case. CAPRICORN They say that ignorance is bliss - and with some things this is very true, but once you know, there is no going back. Do you act on the knowledge or just try to ignore it? This needs some time and thought as to what to do. AQUARIUS Financial plans need to be made. Stop putting it off. Once you have got some good advice you will wish you had done it sooner. PISCES You have already moved forward so much that you cannot give up or slip backwards now. After making so much headway it is time to let someone else help you continue this journey.

How Important Is Your Hair To You? It's time to get serious! It really is worrying when people come into the salon, sit in your chair and complain about how bad their hair is and all that they have been through or what has gone wrong with their hair and scalp in the past because of trusting the wrong people. That's okay if you don’t care about your hair, but for about a 99% of us ladies and men it can be the most important part of us. It creates who we are, gives us confidence, compliments our features, shows how we care about ourselves, and for us ladies it is our main symbol of femininity. Therefore I really do think our hair must be one of our main priorities and we should invest in giving it the same care as we would for our teeth & health care!

Cardamom and Lemon Curd Cheesecake

Ingredients 100g butter 250g digestive biscuits, crushed 600g cream cheese 100g icing sugar 3 (unwaxed) lemons

284ml double cream 1 tspn cardamom powder 1 tspn crushed cardamom, optional 8 tablespoons lemon curd

Time: Prep 25-30 minutes Chill 2 hours. Serves: 8 If you like tangy lemon curd you'll love this no bake cheesecake with the cardamom complimenting the lemon perfectly. Did you know cheesecake has been around for a very, very long time? The origins apparently go as far back as ancient Greece, where it’s reported a concoction of crushed cheese, wheat flour and eggs were served to competing athletes in the first Olympics in 776 BC! Modern cheesecakes come in all sorts of embellishments, forms, combination of flavours, biscuits, different types of cheese, gelling agents cooked and uncooked; a long way from the original three ingredients. We’ve given the cheesecake an Indian twist by adding powdered cardamom to the base and crushed seeds (optional) in to the cheesecake mix. This is an easy throw it all in cheesecake – luxuriously rich, creamy and tangy, equally at home as an afternoon treat or an after dinner dessert – dress it up with a swirl of dark melted chocolate and sliced strawberries. Recipe - In a large saucepan melt the butter and stir in the digestive biscuits and cardamom powder and mix well until the biscuits are coated. - Using the back of a wooden spoon firmly press the mixture into the base and sides of a lined 23 cm loose bottomed cake tin. Place in the fridge to set for 20 minutes. - Wash, zest and juice the lemons in to a large mixing bowl.

QF Focus Magazine - Add the remaining ingredients. Whisk together until the mixture becomes thick and creamy. - Spoon the mixture into the chilled biscuit base and chill in the fridge for 1.5 hours. - Put the lemon curd in a bowl; add a splash of hot water. With a spoon mix in the water to loosen and thin the curd out – this makes it easier to swirl and spread over the cheesecake. Cover the top of the cheesecake with the lemon curd. - 10 minutes before serving remove the cheesecake from the tin place on a serving plate. Slice and serve!

The days are getting warmer and the nights are getting longer as we waved goodbye to the winter leagues this month. Quesada bowlers have faced stiff competition during the season but have managed some very creditable results - here are the highlights: In the Southern League Division A, the Swallows, finished in 4th position, equalling 160 points with Emerald Isle who claimed 3rd position with shots difference. Congratulations to the Swallows. In the Southern League Division B, the Swifts finished in 3rd position - what a great result for the team! Following some great performances in the final matches of the season, Quesada’s Winter League squad finished in 4th position well done everyone! And in the South Alicante Winter League Enterprise Division, the Pearls won their battle against San Miguel Beagles to take 3rd place - what a successful season for the team, well done! Finally, after a hard fought last match of the season our Federated 4’s Panthers achieved an excellent 4 all draw against San Miguel Cherokees and finished the season with a very credible 3rd place out of 5 teams in division one. Meantime Terry Morgan, as part of the Spanish National Squad, returned from Cyprus with a team medal for the winning overall team as well as the men’s squad

winning the Men’s Competition. A very successful competition for the Spanish National team! And there were more Quesada winners in the Les McCracken Memorial competition held at Emerald Isle. Against some stiff competition from the Emerald Isle players as well as the other 6 visiting teams, the Quesada squad - Jim Donnelly, Steve Hibberd, Dee Stephenson and John Stephenson - did a great job and won the cup for the best visiting team congratulations! So as the winter season closes, the summer season begins and there’s plenty of activity to keep our members busy in the coming weeks including the summer leagues and the Champion of Champion play-offs - good luck to all of our Quesada Champions. At Quesada Bowls Club we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. Book Review by Ivor Kindle

Book title: The Secret Speech Author: Tom Rob Smith Publisher: Simon and Schuster The year is 1956 ...Stalin is dead and the Soviet Union is changing under the leadership of Nikita Khrushchev. Khrushchev makes a speech that attempts to distance his leadership from the violence and self doubt of the Stalin era. Leo Demidov is heading a homicide department from an obscure office in Moscow. Family problems lead Demidov to try and resolve past issues that have disrupted his relationship with his adopted daughter. The plot switches from Gulags to gangsters ...from Moscow to Budapest on the eve of the Hungarian uprising. This book is not as good a read as his first book Child 44 ...however it does still keep the reader up to speed with the psychology and life within the realm of the Soviet empire in the post Stalin era. This is book number two of the trilogy ...give it a go ...it is nothing if not thought provoking.

...Keep reading, Ivor Kindle.

Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter's Tea Party at La Finca Commercial Centre, Algorfa On the Saturday 25th May a Charity Family Fun Day has been organised from midday to help raise much needed funds for Maddi, a young lady very close to the heart to a lot of local businesses. Maddi is now 17 years old and was diagnosed over 2 years ago with SPG15 (Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia 15). It's a very rare and life limiting disease and at present Maddi is the only one with it in the UK that we know of. The disease causes paralysis of the limbs as-well as additional neurological symptoms that can affect the eyes, along with Parkinson's and other brain abnormalities. So far Maddi is still trying to keep up her strength with PT but she can only walk a short distance before exhaustion and pain takes over and her balance has become seriously affected which causes her to fall over. Over the last year there has been ongoing fundraising to help raise money to support Gene Therapy research for SPG15. Work is still ongoing for this therapy in hope of one day it will halt the disease, however, this research takes time and her family know there will be more damage caused to Maddi before it will happen. Therefore the family are now fundraising to help get Maddi to St Louis Children's Hospital in America to have a life changing surgery. The surgical procedure called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) is to try and give Maddi some quality of life and to hopefully keep her walking for a while longer. Unfortunately this is not available in the UK for Maddi's disease, but the world leading specialist Dr Park at St Louis Children's Hospital has already treated other patients with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia successfully and so many CP children with some fantastic results, and has suggested this would be a good option for Maddi.

.....continued from previous page SDR is a permanent life changing surgery, it takes away almost all of the spasticity. It would prevent bone deformities and contracture that can happen due to spasticity and weakness, and improve function. This should then take away the pain and the stiffness that SPG15 causes. The idea for the Mad Hatter's Tea Party came from Christine at Bliss Hair & Beauty and she is delighted with how the local businesses are supporting this cause and getting involved with a true community spirit. Each individual business will be decorating their own table with the Mayor of Algorfa attending to judge the tables, and later in the day judge the best fancy dress (of which the public are welcome to join in) then awarding certificates to the winners. Throughout the day there are many events taken place from a draughts competition, tombola, guess the weight of the cake and

sweets in the jar and a raffle where you could win a spa day for two at La Finca Hotel kindly donated by Bliss Hair & Beauty and Welcome Estates. There will be a Magician to entertain as well as a treasure hunt for both adults and then the children, and lots of other fun and games. The resident choir will be performing on the day and Sugar Radio have offered to do a live broadcast, keeping you entertained from midday well into the early evening. There is a current live auction to bid for an overnight stay and a game of golf for two people at Loch Lomond golf course which was kindly donated by a member of the golf society. You can bid for this on the events Facebook page “Mad Hatters Tea Party. La Finca Commercials” or by calling 619 579 139. This bidding is open now and will finish on the 25th of May. Donations towards Maddi’s fundraising can also be made at

https://bradleyloweryfoundation.com/future-for-maddi/. With plenty of food and drink available at the many bars and restaurants, be sure to pop in and show them your support. It is sure to be a packed day so it might be an idea to reserve your table at The Bistro, Olivos or The Corner flag (see adverts for contact information). And if you are looking at purchasing a property in the area you can have a browse at the properties available in the window at Welcome Estates and then Connect Conveyancing for all your property solutions. As well as the obvious Alice in Wonderland theme, the day is all about having fun and raising as much money as possible for Maddi with some proceeds also going towards Algorfa School. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Two essential organisations that could save your life

MABS and the AECC were the guests at a meeting of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the RBL which was held recently in Mil Palmeras.

Hazel Merridew and Pamela Blanden spoke on behalf of the two organisations in which they explained how they work together to provide both preventative examinations and post diagnosis care and support to the general public. Hazel, based in San Javier, explained that the MABS Cancer Support Fundaciรณn, which covers the whole of the Costa Blanca, provides practical support and help for patients, information on cancers and treatments, translators and even drivers and transport to take people for hospital appointments and treatment. Pamela, meanwhile, who volunteers at the Campoverde office of the AECC, located in Campoverde Town Hall, explained the testing facilities and examinations that are available for both men and for women through her organisation, at a minimal cost, examinations that could save your life. Further information on both organisations is available from 615 016 035 (MABS) or 690 195 117 (AECC Campoverde). Please note the change of day for the Orihuela Costa RBL, which now meets on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at the Olympia Restaurant, Mil Palmeras, starting at 7.30 pm. For Community Support call +34 676 45 17 80 or for information about the branch go to: http://counties.britishlegion.org.uk/counties/spain-north.

Gran Alacant 2 - Rojales 2 - at Pereira Ground Santa Pola Team: Doug, Johan, Michael, Malcolm, Stephen, Gary, Dave, Tim, Jason. Subs Clive and Trevor. It was a much better performance than the last time we played Rojales (lost 8-3). 2-0 up going into the last quarter, with both goals scored by Dave before half time, should have been enough, but we wilted and succumbed to an unstoppable strike and a penalty. A word about a very good referee who hails from Alicante who we shall be using in future. Nobody got away with any contact and he was very quick to blow up for running. Only problem he was going with English rules and we prefer Scottish rules!

A View From

The Top

Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up. How very True Saw this quote whilst reading through a variety of stories on my laptop... For me what follows is oh so very true. "No one will ever really understand politics until they understand that politicians are not trying to solve our problems. They are trying to solve their own problems - of which getting elected and re-elected are number one and number two. Whatever is number three is far behind."

Poverty UK

Been reading my way through the latest facts and figures in relation to the level of poverty in the United Kingdom. The figures are truly shocking for a country said to be the fifth biggest economy on the planet. 14.2 million people are said to live in poverty in the UK. Of this total 8.5 million are adults ...4.5 million are children and 1.4 million are people described as pensioners. Within these numbers are many people described as having a disability ...these disabled people are said to be more likely to live within a family environment. 48.3% of households that are in poverty live with a disabled person. Reading on I wondered what was the definition for the "Poverty Line" within the United Kingdom. For your information Dear Reader the "Poverty Line" in the UK is defined

QF Focus Magazine as a household with an income below 60% of average. Sitting here I am still wondering what these facts and figures mean on a day to day level. More research has led me to the "Minimum income standard"...this standard seeks to put some figures in a monetary sense against the reality of the life of a working person. Using this standard it is reckoned that a single person needs £18,400 pounds a year before tax and benefits to live. A single parent with one child needs £28,450 before tax and benefits. Two parents with two children need £40,000 before tax and benefits."In order to have the opportunities and choices necessary to participate in society". As the average yearly salary for men and women combined is £29,009 ...it does not take a genius to see that everything in the UK cupboard is far from being progressive.

Notre Dame de Paris

What a terrible disaster it is that has be fallen the Great Cathedral of Notre Dame. I watched in utter disbelief as the television cameras showed the world the great Cathedral being destroyed by fire. Started in 1163 the mighty edifice was not officially completed until 1345 ...however if you have seen any of the World's great buildings it does always appear that they are in a state of permanent repair. The president of France has vowed to rebuild the Lady of Paris ...can you ever bring such an iconic structure back to life? Or will something different rise from the ashes.

Hoisted by one's own pertard

Read on the wibbly wobbly web about the demise of an animal poacher who met his death whilst going about his vile trade ...it seems that while attempting to kill a rhino and steal the horn the poacher was trampled to death by an elephant and was subsequently eaten by a pride of lions ...when his body was recovered only his skull and his trousers were left as remains. Did I chuckle? Of course I did.

I needed a weight loss plan that would keep my energy levels up as well as keeping my hunger at bay. SLIM4LIFE Exantespain did just that. I saw Shirley Latham – founder of Slim4Life - and she advised me on the perfect plan to suit my lifestyle. Going to Shirley, my consultant, kept me focused and motivated and within a few weeks I lost the one stone that I just had been unable to shift any other way. For me, though, the fact that I have not put this weight back on – is indeed a miracle and I am so grateful to Slim4Life – the best decision I ever made.” Our Slim4Life private groups or small groups and venues all offer support and you will meet like-minded people on the same exciting life-changing journey.

Journalist and broadcaster Jack Troughton plays ‘Johnny Foreigner’ and casts an eye over Spain and focuses on stories that serve as a gentle reminder he remains an Englishman abroad. Lambs to the slaughter

Scoot around town TECHNOLOGY these days means an app for everything and accelerating across the country are ways to get mobile by using your mobile (as in a device). Uber, the sometimes controversial taxi service, has placed 500odd electric scooters across Madrid – the company has also had the capital idea of giving a 10 minute ride on its ‘Jump’ service ‘gratis’ – absolutely free.

&

CONFUSING being a grown-up these days; with all those nursery rhymes and kiddie stories being kicked into touch for one reason or another after falling victim to the politically correct brigade. Must be more than a tad bewildering for those who just want to tell a tale or enjoy a sing-a-long with the youngest family members – after all, they are the tunes and stories we all remember from being bounced on the knees of the silver-haired oldies of our own tribes. A school in Barcelona has just shrunk its library shelves by some 200 titles because of their “toxic” content in reinforcing gender stereotypes – the titles were apparently reviewed by thought police of the Catalan government in a library aimed at kids aged six... other state schools will be following the diktat, ‘by order of’. Farewell then to ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty’ – apparently the catalogue only included 10% of titles “approved” for being written from a “gender perspective”. It was stated that

QF Focus Magazine 30% were toxic – that’s spreading poison – and 60% were ruled offside (yellow carded?) for less serious infringements. Gender bias (er...grown up language there) is also accused of spreading its evil through books designed to teach the alphabet, numbers, and good behaviour. St George – patron saint of England and also a much-loved sainty-type in Catalonia – famously rescued fair maid by slaying a dragon; but too much machismo here folks! Instead, meet Saint Georgia who does the same to over-sized green reptiles and is promoted to being a hero...well, it’s inclusive. The kids might have to wait a while to appreciate Game of Thrones but there are loads of strong females to focus on (geddit?). Catch ‘em young say the authorities, at the age of five children have already established gender rules ...just tell that to the sisters who are the pirates in ‘Swallows and Amazons’ or (if you dare) to Minnie the Minx and Beryl the Peril. All animals are equal; some are more equal than others – one of three pigs has a mortgage on a home that can’t be blown down. The best stories rise above stereotypes and take us all into a magical world above and beyond being PC; especially during that so short age of innocence. Stamp out gender violence! Now that’s a real rallying cry and probably approved by both St George and St Georgia to boot.

The city is the first to test drive the new Uber ride in Europe. Download the app, spend €1 to unlock the scooter and (after the limited offer of 10 minutes for nothing) it is €0.12 per minute. Other companies are already offering electric scooters in Madrid – technology also allows the hiring of bicycles and Smart electric cars. It is a concept that will probably blossom across the country – a Dutch company is now offering cycle hire (the pedal type) in Jávea. Jump users are being advised to wear helmets, indicate direction changes, to leave the scooter legally parked – GPS tracking means big brother is watching – and, please, do stay off pavements. In fact scooters are banned from pavements (more police with ‘stingers’ needed), from bus lanes, on streets with more than one lane in each direction, and the M-30 motorway around central Madrid. They are allowed in bicycle lanes and paths (there are fleets of them circumnavigating green parks); on inner city roads where the maximum speed is 30km per hour – but AT ALL TIMES respect the humble pedestrian has right of way... that’s not grumpy journalist, it’s the law.

It can cost to talk! SPANISH police are to be given the power to check mobile ‘phone records of drivers involved in crashes in a new road safety measure.

Page 29 It is the latest move in a bid to cut the numbers of drivers distracted by using a mobile at the wheel – the illicit practice is said to increase the number of accidents by 20%. And so if lawmen suspect a mobile phone could have caused a serious accident they can apply to the courts in the hope a beak will grant access to records – use of a vehicle’s Bluetooth technology is permitted. Currently, using a mobile at the wheel attracts a €200 fine and three points docked from a licence – in serious accidents resulting in injury or death; it can lead to criminal proceedings and a possible prison sentence.

Hip! Hip! Hooray A lovely Sunday afternoon in September 2017 and I’m almost finished another sportif but this time I’m starting to feel my legs and hips not wanting to do any more without giving me grief. As soon as I stand up in the saddle, I start to get a grinding feeling in my right hip, never had this before, what is it? What’s wrong? Anyway, I just put the pain behind me and got on with it finishing yet another great Spanish Sportif. I had soon forgotten all about it until a couple of weeks later I started to get a sore hip when walking or standing for long periods of time ie: (all day in the shop). I was cycling with the guys as usual 3 times per week with no pain until I stopped, it was sore and difficult to get off the bike. We regularly walk Chico along the beach at la Marina in the winter and this particularly cold Sunday I found I couldn’t walk far at all as my hip was in agony giving me sore knees as well. We finally reached the cafe had our coffee and cake and went back to the car; boy was I glad to get there. Christmas that year, seven of us had hired a wooden cabin up in the hills outside Valencia where we always go hill walking with the dogs. It was boxing day and we were up early looking forward to our walk which I had all marked out on the map. We had only gone 2km when my hip starting playing up and I was in excruciating pain, we all stopped for a rest and I told the others to continue that I was returning to the house to rest, Mathew also came back with me as he had caught a cold. The others went off with Martin leading, 6 hours later they called me to go and get them as they were totally lost and miles off the planned route, just as well I hadn’t been drinking. New Year we went back to Scotland to see the family and I returned with a severe flu virus which bedded me for a few days. All my joints had seized up and I couldn’t walk so eventually I gave in and Lynn and Harry took me to A+E where I was given a Cortisone

Page 31 injection and sent to bed. Monday, I had to go and see the Doctor about the virus, so I told her about my hip pain also. She sent me for an x-ray and a couple of days later I’m in Torrievieja hospital seeing the Orthopedic surgeon who confirmed that I indeed had Arthritis in my hip joint. I was given a course of painkillers and told to come back in 8 months for another x-ray and check up. By this time, it was the end of October and I had the whole summer in unbearable uncomfortable pain but just had to get on with it. When I finally saw the surgeon again, she said my hip had deteriorated very quickly, and that she was putting me forward for a new full Titanium hip replacement. I was so pleased but also scared at the same time. Three months later I’m in for my operation at 7am, 7 February (a day I’ll always remember) everything went like clockwork and I was back in my very comfortable en-suite room where Lynn was patiently waiting by 2pm. I stayed in the hospital for 4 days with nurses checking me almost every hour. The treatment, staff, food etc at the hospital was fantastic, I could not fault it. Once home I started my own physiotherapy sessions every day, the first week I was up and down the street on my zimmer frame until I was exhausted, second week 2 x sticks walking 5km a day, third week one stick and eventually no sticks still walking 5km a day, I started on the spinning bike on week 3 just doing 15mins a day then gradually up to 30 mins a day. By week 6 I had started on a small fold up bike which was all I could manage progressing onto an e-bike for 2 weeks and week 8 I’m back out on my Pinarello and back at work full time. I have had no pain since I left the hospital, sometimes it feels uncomfortable if I overdo it but other than that I feel great. On week 8 I had to go back to see the surgeon for another x-ray and final assessment and she was delighted with my progress. This has been a life changer for me and I’m looking forward to enjoying this summer so if there is anyone out their thinking of getting it done what are you waiting for. A big thank you to Lynn, Harry, Mathew and Martin for keeping the shop going and for putting up with me. Pilarmonics are the 2019 Spanish National Champion Chorus Again On Saturday 6 April, SABS (Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers) held their Annual Convention in Calpe, Alicante, where choruses and quartets from all over Spain competed in what was a superb contest. On that Saturday morning all competitors were up early with full stage make up and stage outfits on before 9am. Pilarmonics had a last minute pep talk and warm up before crossing the contest stage and performing to the judges and audience. Their mantra was to sing from the heart to touch hearts, to enjoy their time on stage and to have fun. And boy they did all that and more. Many months of rehearsal, dedication and coaching paid off when Pilarmonics, based in San Cayetano, Murcia, was awarded the GOLD medal as 1st placed chorus in the Spanish National Competition with the highest score ever awarded in the National contest of 74.8%. In addition, they also received trophies for the highest score in all 3 categories which are Music, Singing and Performance. Musical Director, Dawn Ritch who lives in Cabo Roig, said “This is beyond our wildest dreams. When we won 2 years ago in our first ever competition we wondered whether we would ever replicate that success but we’ve done it and with the highest score ever so we’re doubly pleased to be Double Gold Medal Champions. We all worked so very hard in preparation for the contest and are thrilled to be the Spanish National Champions again.” Pilarmonics President, Jo Scott, said “We received amazing feedback from the judges, particularly the esteemed Performance Judge, Joe Connelly from the USA, who pointed out that we are actually the ‘undefeated champions of Spain’ competed twice won twice! We definitely loved hearing that!” The annual AGM of the

Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers took place shortly before the end of the convention and two members of Pilarmonics were voted on to the SABS Board as President (Dawn Ritch) and PR (Donna Walsh) so it’s exciting times ahead not only for Pilarmonics but also for SABS. Donna Walsh, who has been with Pilarmonics since the beginning said “We all work really hard together to make a great team, we have an amazing Musical Director in Dawn who continues to learn and grow as we all learn and grow. In the barbershop world you never stop learning. We have had some terrific coaches who have helped shape us as a chorus and we are all so very proud of each other as we work hard in harmony and friendship to have fun and sing. We are still in awe at being awarded the highest ever score in the Spanish National Contest. We are absolutely delighted.” “We are also proud that Pilarmonics will be representing Spain in the International Contest in Killarney, Ireland in October.” Donna added. In addition to chorus success 2 members of Pilarmonics also entered the International Quartet Contest with their quartet, Double Bass, and were also awarded with the 1st Place Gold Medal. So it was Double Gold for Sarah Cole (who has been with Pilarmonics since its inception) & Karen Adamson who are both based mainly in the UK but travel to Spain for rehearsals and coaching. Pilarmonics began only in January 2016 and rehearsals take place in San Cayetano and Dolores de Pacheco every Wedndesday evening from 6.45pm to 9.15pm then they head straight to the local bar for a couple of drinks and more singing. If you would like to see the Undefeated Champion Chorus of Spain in action and find out what barbershop is all about then please contact Caroline Francis by email secretary.pilarmonics@gmail.com or phone 696 720 025 to chat with Donna Walsh. Check out their Facebook page with a like www.facebook.com/pilarmonics to be kept up to date on future events etc.. If you’d like to book Pilarmonics for your event you can get in touch in the same way. The photo shows – Pilarmonics - SABS National Champion Chorus 2019 by Eric Ideler.
