Your future is created by what you do today As many are aware, the rules for staying in Spain and the EU in general, and the regulations for making Spain your home, are now far more important and thorough. It is vital that you seek good advice before committing yourself to living in Spain or the EU. My company is knowledgeable regarding Spain, be it moving here to become a permanent residence, or extended trips as tourists, with or without holiday homes in Spain. New residency/visa applications have to be processed via the Spanish Consulate in the UK. Having chosen your location and started your application for your visa, my company is there to help with Health Insurance, which is a requirement for your residency. Jennifer Cunningham Insurance can then provide all your insurance, from fully comprehensive home insurance, car, pet and life, travel and funeral, to ensure all your needs are covered to keep yourself and your loved one protected. We also work with trusted associates, such as lawyers, accountants and financial advisors, as part of our Expat Services division. Why Jennifer Cunningham Insurances? I established the company nearly 30 years ago, to provide a secure, professional service, with knowledge staff, created to provide the Expats here in Spain with the correct insurance policies with the covers they were used to, with unique Renewals and Claims departments to provide a full service and support in English for my clients. Both Liberty Seguros and ASSSA Health Insurance, in my professional opinion the best in Spain, provide special Expat policies, in your own language to make life easier for you. For those of you already settled in Spain, now is the time to check your insurance policies to ensure you have the cover you need. You can visit one of my offices, if one is nearby, or telephone and my staff can assist you, checking and explaining your polices and special points of information that are necessary to make like simpler for you, such as the legal requirement to have vehicles insured at all times, whether they are being used or not and tailoring the policies for your family’s needs. We all now feel comfortably settled into our new home, although it is going to take a while before we are completely box free. Our furry friends have certainly taken a liking for the garden and already have a running track around the bushes. They daringly hover around the pool and it is only a matter of time before one of them falls into it. I just hope it is in a few months when it has warmed up because I definitely will not be entering to help them out in these current temperatures. Speaking of which, I honestly cannot recall ever feeling so cold in Spain, except a few years ago in Sierra Nevada but that was to be expected. There have been a few mornings when taking my angel to school, that I have had to wait for ice to defrost on the windscreen of our car!! However, we all know this is a temporary situation and before we know it we will be complaining of being too hot as we do every year. Until next time. ichelle

In the investment world – how bad was 2021? It was a second year of volatility for the stock market. Despite the rollout of vaccines the pandemic has persisted and news of the Omicron variant sent shock-waves through global markets. The FTSE All Share was up 13.79 per cent in the year but some sectors have continued to be hit hard by further restrictions and pandemic-induced supply chain shortages. Other companies have continued to benefit from digital adoption as well as increased infrastructure spending.

How does this news translate to the performance of investments we recommend? Most of the investment packages we recommend are not necessarily quoted on the UK stock exchange as they are registered and representative of industries and currencies elsewhere in the world such as North America and Europe. However, a popular diversified portfolio that we do recommend to clients who are an appropriate “fit”, and one which I invest in personally, performed as follows for the year ended 2021;

Cautious Portfolio Increase 6.65% Balanced Portfolio Increase 10.81% Growth Portfolio Increase 13.81% High Growth Portfolio Increase 14.87% If you want a better return on your money all you have to do is call me, email me or call into our Seagate Wealth Management office and ask for me. It's that simple. Please call me for information on various investment solutions for your circumstances (minimum £20,000/€25,000) or about pension transfers to enable flexible access (take what you want when you want rather than being drip-fed your own money). FIVE FACTS ABOUT LICENCES IN SPAIN

Spanish building licences are quite famously difficult and tortuous to obtain and in most cases a bit of a nightmare. Here are 5 common tricky situations that can only be solved using a Retrospective Licence. 1- Garages or building work carried out attached to the boundaries (even permanent carports etc) cannot obtain a licence (generally speaking). The minimum distance from an open window to the neighbour's boundary is 2 metres in Spain. Generally detached villas in Alicante area must stay away from the boundary by a minimum 3 metres, although this may vary and can even be much more. 2- Glazed in terraces or closed in porches are built without a proper licence in 95% of cases. Spanish properties traditionally tend to have many open (patios) or semi-open spaces (porches) to create breezes or shaded areas. These semi-open spaces are very frequently closed in by using glazing or brick work. The Spanish laws regard these enclosures as extensions of the built floor area of the property and therefore they are subject to a 'Major Licence' for their construction. Licences to close these spaces in are generally not issued. 3- Most pools are not declared in the title deeds. Many of them don't have a licence either. The small percentage that have a licence generally don't have the architect’s certificate signing off the building of the pool. If your are selling your property you can use a Certificate of Antiquity or Retrospective Licence for pools, to give peace of mind to the purchasers and also use it to upgrade the title deeds to include the pool at the time of selling. 4- Any exterior cupboard, semi open kitchen or other covered building work must have a proper 'Major Licence' when it has an interior height over 1,50 metres. 5- Under-builds with living accommodation are nearly never made with licences and like the previous examples can be added to the title deeds using a Retrospective Licence. In all these scenarios the document needed is a Certificate of Antiquity, also known as a Retrospective Licence, to guard against

possible sanctions and it is highly recommended to avoid putting off potential buyers due to the existence of illegal extensions in or on the property. It will also be needed on completion of the sale in order to update the property’s description in Title Deeds & Land Registry. The only condition in order to obtain a Retrospective Licence is that the building work done is 4 years old, before the 20th August of 2014. If you are purchasing a property in this area remember to always give your solicitor an exact description of the property highlighting the building works above and ask them to guarantee what you are buying is exactly what is registered at the land registry. Only proper Spanish architects are competent to issue retrospective licences so if your solicitors are studying your case, ask them to contact Martinez de la Casa Architects to provide the Antiquity Certificate and we will make the whole process easier, faster and cheaper with our fixed published prices and guaranteed deadlines. Cost of a Certificate of Antiquity / Retrospective Licence for pools is 190€ +IVA and extensions or complete properties 270€ +IVA. Discounts available for existing Martinez de la Casa clients or if you require your Energy Performance Certificate (121€ IVA Inc) or Habitation Licence (from 118€ Registration tax not included), done at the same time. Martinez de la Casa Architects can guarantee all services within stated deadlines and a fixed price. With over 5,000 clients in South East Spain, we are considered one of the most prominent and respectable architecture practices, providing all types of certificates and licences, amongst other services. Book Review by Ivor Kindle Title: Bob Mortimer "The Autobiography" And Away Author: Bob Mortimer Publisher: Gallery Books UK I have spent many a good hour or so watching the marvellous TV series...Gone Fishing with Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse. The series from BBC Two is about how two characters, Bob and Paul use fishing to help slow down their hectic lifestyles following both of them having heart problems that required surgery. The series is a really good watch and is both humorous and thought provoking as well as being very informative in its settings and in its real time information in respect of the art of fishing and in its information about the waterways, rivers and seas within and around the UK. After watching many episodes of the series, I happened upon the Bob Mortimer book whilst shopping in WH Smiths in the UK. The book tells the life history of Mortimer, his life from birth in Middlesbrough via his association with Vic Reeves and onto his current life after major heart surgery. It is a nice contemplative book full of comedy and the telling of how Mortimer made it in Television comedy. The sub title of the Book is "And Away" ...which is what Mortimer and Whitehouse say as they return the fish, they have caught back to the wild in the TV series. If you have not watched the TV series, then please do...also the book is good for reading whilst trying to nod off to sleep. Keep reading, Ivor Kindle.

Be extra careful when walking your dogs, or if you live near pine trees. The processionary caterpillars have already started to leave their nests - those white hairy looking balls found high in the trees. The caterpillars are covered in poisonous hairs with a toxin that can be lethal for inquisitive dogs who get close to them. The hairs cause a type of allergic reaction causing swelling of the tongue and oesophagus which can lead to the dog being unable to breathe. If your dog starts scratching at its mouth and salivating profusely then you need to get to a vet as soon as possible. Washing the dogs mouth out with lots of water will help dilute the effect of the poison. If you walk a lot in places which are a long way from a vet then it may be worth talking to them about medication which you can take with you in case of such an emergency. It is better to be safe than sorry as many dogs end up losing parts of their tongues due to the effect of these poisonous hairs. The best thing of course is to keep your dog away from them, and if you have any nests in your trees have them removed before the caterpillars leave.

CRUZ AZUL CONTINUES TO HELP PETS IN NEED

SPANGLES GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH DESPITE PANDEMIC Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus has coped well with whatever this pandemic has thrown at them. “The past two years have been unprecedented but we’re a very supportive team that’s great at facing challenges and coming out on top” said Chorus Manager, Lyn Baines. “2021 was no exception!” In 2020 the Chorus turned a negative into a positive by recruiting “virtual” members who, together with existing members, were coached individually by Musical Director, Valerie Lynch. Once restrictions were lifted, and following strict safety guidelines, the chorus were able to meet again to practice in person, adapting to each new regulation as it came along. The Christmas season is always busy for the chorus, and they were disappointed to miss out on so much in 2020, in 2021 it was exciting to dust off the Christmas music and prepare in earnest. It proved to be one of the busiest seasons so far, singing at new venues in Los Alcázares, Los Urrutias, Cabo Roig, San Javier, Balsicas and Playa Flamenca. “Our feet didn’t touch the ground during December and we loved every minute of it” Valerie remarked. In 2021 the chorus ran two retreats, one in June and one in September, with new and existing members receiving vocal coaching, heavily mixed with a lot of fun. November saw them enjoy their first Thanksgiving Dinner (postponed from 2020), thanks to their American MD, Valerie. Their second Burns Night, was a total sell-out. Other events are planned during 2022 and the chorus is optimistic these will go ahead. “We have had to adapt to an ever-changing scenario in this pandemic and we have learned to take one day at a time, but it’s A good to make plans for the future so we keep moving forward” B said Valerie. Since its inception in December 2004, Spangles has always supported local charities and 2021/2022 sees this tradition continuing, singing for MABS at Christmas and planned fundraising events for Cruz Azul Murcia on 9 February and for Barrington on 17 February. “Barrington has been a great supporter of Spangles and local charities for many years, so we are extremely happy to be able to pay it back now that he and his family need it” said Lyn Baines. Their excellent fundraising team is also continuously working D hard to support the chorus in its 2022 plans. C During 2021, Spangles welcomed 10 new members, boosting their membership to 33, with a new recruitment campaign in action now. To find out more, check out their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SpanglesChorus/ Spangles is a ladies’ a cappella chorus, singing in four part harmony. They rehearse every Thursday, from 10am to 1pm at Centro Municipal Las Claras, Calle Helena, Los Narejos, Los Alcázares and visitors are always welcome. Celebrating Vega Baja’s Queen Veg The understated but super-healthy artichoke will take centre stage at a special congress and gastronomy show in Almoradí next month. The queen vegetable of the Vega Baja region, south of Alicante, will be celebrated in the 7th National Artichoke Congress on March 5 and 6. Previous events have placed Almoradí on the map of gastronomic tourism, according to the town’s mayor María Gómez. The last time this event was held was in 2020 as it was cancelled last year because of Covid. Events include a guided tour about the history of artichokes in the Vega Baja, tapas starring artichokes, show-cooking, music, children's workshops, and exhibitions. The congress will be followed by a Gastronomic Show for five days from March 7 featuring local chefs and hoteliers producing special menus and new creations starring artichokes. Almoradí has the largest cultivated area of artichokes in Spain and so took the initiative to promote the vegetable nationally. It is now seen as a hallmark of the Vega Baja with interest growing in the production and promotion of artichokes as a quality agri-food product. The Vega Baja Artichoke Association was set up in 2011 and is made up of different companies and the municipalities of Almoradí, Benejúzar, Callosa, Catral, Cox, Dolores, Orihuela, Rafal, Rojales and San Fulgencio. Between 25,000 and 30,000 tons of artichokes are produced in the region each year. In fact, the vegetable is such an important part of the economy that Dolores has erected an artichoke sculpture on a roundabout leading into the town centre. The benefits of eating artichokes and supplements are numerous. They are packed with nutrients, can lower cholesterol, regulate blood pressure and may improve your liver. The N-332 are a group of Spanish Traffic Police Officers who decided to create a Facebook group to inform all ex-pats and tourists about Spanish traffic laws as they think it is unfair to fine them for breaking rules they didn't know about. You can find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DrivingSpain/ and follow them to keep up to date as they only share official information.

Would you like to have your driving licence on your mobile? Well, now it's possible with the "miDGT" app. The DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico) offers a free mobile app so that you can carry your driving licence as well as your vehicle documentation in digital format on your mobile device. miDGT is an official app from the Dirección General de Tráfico (Department of Transportation). With this app, Spanish residents no longer have to carry a physical driver's licence. Not only that, but users can also add their vehicle documentation to this app, so it's always readily available if an officer requests it. To use miDGT, log in with an electronic ID card or digital certificate. Entering this data helps keep the information on the app secure. Once you've logged in, you're ready to link your permits and vehicle documentation to any Android device. On top of that, users will soon be able to manage any fines they may have from the miDGT app. Along the same lines, the new DGT app for Android will allow users to check the points they have, and those they've lost since getting their driver's licence.

Reasons to download the app; Easy access; Access the app with the Cl@ve system (electronic ID or Digital Certificate) together with your fingerprint/mobile unlock pattern or by entering the personal data that we request and an SMS that we will send to your mobile. We will notify you; Don't worry! With your miDGT app, we will notify you when your drivers licence or ITV is going to expire. Other services; Request a vehicle report, pay your fines, identify the driver who was driving your vehicle, register a regular driver of your vehicle, pay the fees you need to or even change your address. Stay informed; Access current news about the DGT, traffic and road safety.

I suppose that even in a confined space some people think that the rules are not for them. Perhaps elcome to my monthly column “A view from they were Government ministers taking their lead from the Prime the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling Minister himself. The flight was on time and we landed at London readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree Gatwick on time at 12.55pm. or you may disagree with my views, I care not. I exited the aircraft and was directed to an area put aside for people These are my views long held and forged over a life time of requiring special assistance. I was met by a really helpful male work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at assistant who sat both myself and a couple of other people into what is really winding me up. what looked to me to be a stretched golf cart. In we sat and off we went, please have your passports ready we were advised as we Return to Covid Central... Continued! You may remember I left you in the January edition of View ... made our way to passport control and to my surprise a separate where was I... Oh yes! I was sitting in Seat C23 of an Easyjet Border Control point where we were treated with patience, had our Covid paperwork checked and were sent on our way. My Airbus A20 on the end of the runway of Alicante/Elche airport. That moment duly arrived, you know, one moment you are sitting only concern is that at an airport like Gatwick the train station is there as nervous as hell as the sound of jet engines increase, and someway from the airport handling area. Yes I know it’s not that from a standing start all of a sudden a hundred and something far, but if you have trouble walking it is far enough. That said my people inside a long cylindrical tube are hurtling along several first experience of airport special assistance at both Alicante and thousand feet of tarmac. Then that crucial Speed (V1) is reached Gatwick was a positive one. I was struck by genuine kindness of and off we go into the wild blue yonder. Incidentally V1, take off the people who helped me, and I thank them. speed is a cool 170 MPH. Now this is the bit I hate most in flying Onward to Hayling Island by train from Gatwick to Havant I as I suspect do lots of people, the bit I am waiting for is when the was struck by the people on the train who were not wearing face aircraft gets to cruising height and the seat belt on sign switches to masks and in truth I felt a little out of place with my mask securely off. This is the moment where the cabin crew start to move around, covering my mouth and nose. Anyway I arrived at Havant and and things settle down for a couple of hours of flight to London after a short taxi ride I was warmly encamped in the home of my Gatwick. The flight does pass without much ado, that said the lack friend on Hayling Island. After a couple of cups of tea Rob my of most of the hot sandwich menu did not ease my desire for a mate arrived home from his work, which is also his passion. He breakfast. They have eaten most of the hot food on the way over, is a school teacher, a career teacher who teaches History, mentors was the answer to my request for a hot bacon sandwich. I settled the next generation and cares with a passion about all those young for a coffee and a hot cheese and ham sandwich which satiated people who are in his charge. To comply with Covid rules I took my hunger and, like all flight food, took up flight time and meant my day 2 PCR test, sent it off and was happy to be negative. The that whilst eating and drinking I was able to remove my face mask next week on Hayling which was half term, meant that we enjoyed for a while. However, the people sitting opposite me thought it the wild beauty that is Hayling Island. We enjoyed several pints was acceptable to order a coffee each and make that coffee last of foaming ale, watched lots of "Mortimer and Whitehouse" gone the two hours plus flight to Gatwick, despite the cabin crew at fishing and sat contemplating the way of the World in front of Rob's lovely and warm log fire.

A View From The Top

After several well spent days I was off the Island and on the second part of my journey to visit my Daughter and Son in Law in Sussex before very soon it was back to Gatwick and yet more special assistance and another masked flight back home to Benijofar in good time to enjoy Christmas with our nearest (in Spain) and dearest and get a timely Boost to my covid vaccinations. As I write it is now middle January and hopefully the latest variant of Covid is being held at bay. I am waiting for the sun of summer to shine and brighten up all our lives. I hope that times change for the better as, although by nature I am a strong person in a psychological sense, on occasion I do suffer a touch of melancholic angst. Keep well my Dear Reader, keep your head held high and pointing toward the warmth of both the sun and the human spirit.

Aloo Baingan Sabzi – Potato and Aubergine Curry Aubergines are one of the most versatile vegetables in the world in terms of how they are cooked, the shape, colour and size. There are around 100 varieties which come in many shiny shades of purple, white yellow, green, striped or a combination of one or more. Aubergines soak up flavour and as a result they can be grilled, fried, sautéed, baked and steamed. Recipe

Ingredients 3 tablespoons oil 2 large aubergines, bite size chunks 2 medium potatoes, bite size chunks 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 1 medium onion, chopped 1 inch ginger, finely chopped ½ tin chopped tomatoes 1 teaspoon cumin seeds 1 teaspoon turmeric ½ teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon garam masala 3 chopped chillies (optional) Chopped fresh coriander to garnish

In a large saucepan heat the oil to a medium heat; once hot, add the cumin seeds, cook until they start to crackle and turn a golden colour. Add the onion and garlic, cook for about five minutes or until golden brown. Add the fresh ginger, along with the tinned tomatoes. Mix and cook for a couple of minutes. Next stir in the spices, turmeric, salt, garam masala, black pepper, ground cumin and fresh chillies. Cook for 1 minute. Add the potatoes and mix well. Turn the heat down to low, stirring occasionally; cover and cook for about 10 minutes. Add the aubergine and mix well. Cover and cook for 15-20 minutes or until the aubergine and potatoes are soft and tender. If the vegetables begin to stick to the bottom of the pan – add a splash or two of cold water. Once cooked check seasoning. Garnish with coriander and serve with naan or chapatti and plain yoghurt. Looking for a gift with a difference for friends and family back in the UK? Use this as a lesson for the future, that you must not ignore easily fixed issues, facing them early on is so much easier for everyone. VIRGO Flexibility in your life will be the key to moving forward. Voice an idea you have been playing with for a while now, you will be surprised at the response.
