FENUXE While we were researching and compil-
ing information about the 2011 Fenuxe 50 members a general feeling of unworthiness swept the Fenuxe office. Initially, our associate editor, Michael, mentioned he felt he did his fair share of community activism and contributions. However, after we became enthralled in the biographies he said he should do more. “Not only do these people work in an arena which contributes to our community, when they get off work they then go play in a way which also contributes.”

Throughout our day we have plenty of moments to do something to shape our community in a positive direction. Eat, work, shop, donate, play at a gay business, group or organization. The 2011 Fenuxe 50 members live and breathe this idea and because of their tireless, never-ending contributions we have a wonderful thriving gay community in Atlanta.

Some answers were similar, but most answers varied wildly, once again proving that our community encompasses great diversity. Check out these nifty facts about the members of this year's Fenuxe 50.

Being an Atlanta LGBT advocate is hard work and never ending. This issue of Fenuxe celebrates the incredible work of 50 individuals who make gay Atlanta great. When I started Fenuxe I wanted it to be more than a glossy magazine. I wanted to give a voice to those in our community who have given us so much. From large struggles to making everyday a little brighter these individuals are the reason why our community continues to get better and better. Each year I am so amazed at all the good work our Fenuxe 50 members are doing here in Atlanta and around the world. As you read about these inspiring people and the work they do, keep in mind that no matter who you are or what you do there is always a chance to positively affect our community. Although we can’t recognize everyone who helps the community (believe me there are many more than just these listed) Atlanta’s LGBT community should be proud of it’s wonderful people. I want to personally thank each and every member on this list who works tirelessly for the rest of us. Congratulations to all the 50 and we hope that you will join us for a lavish celebration on November 6th: the Ice Party. Trust me. It will be a night you don’t want to miss! -Tyler Calkins, Publisher

THE FENUXE 50:BUSINESS RICHIE ARPINO
ARPINO SALON & PHOTOGRAPHY Why he made the list: For years Richie worked on photo shoots as a muchsought after hair stylist. One day he got the itch to get behind the camera and snap a few pics of himself which led to a second career as a photographer. Richie also operates Arpino Salon while he travels the country snapping photos of sexy men and women. His pictures have graced the pages of Jezebel, The Piedmont Review and our very own, Fenuxe. Some of his most important work is done with his annual calendar. For the last 6 years Richie has gathered some of the hottest men in the country and splashed them as monthly poster boys. Richie donates all the proceeds from sales of the calendar to breast cancer and AIDS research. What else you need to know: Richie spends his downtime with longtime partner Mitchell Anderson.
WILLIAM CAMPBELL
PIEDMONT BARK
Why he made the list: After spending years toiling away in marketing departments of large companies, William decided he wanted to start his own business where he could follow his passion and also create a safe working environment for other LGBT individuals. So, in 2003 William opened Piedmont Bark, which has donated over $100,000 to various LGBT organizations since its inception. Each May William also opens the doors of Piedmont Bark for a P.A.L.S benefit called “Pet Cotillion”. What else you need to know: William spends much of his “down” time with his partner at their cabin in Blue Ridge, Georgia.

FRANK BRAGG
RADIAL CAFE
Why he made the list: People know Frank as the proprietor of Radial Cafe which also won the Fenuxe Best of Atlanta award, but he is much more than mimosas and frittatas. Before he took the reigns of Radial late in 2010 he was a mover and shaker in the LGBT activism world. As the owner of Radial he has continued to lend a helping hand whenever possible. The café routinely offers up free food for local causes and a welcoming space for meetings when needed. What else you need to know: Frank was the area manager for Metrotainment Restaurants and before that was the managing partner at Einstein’s. He has been honored by organizations such as HRC, Georgia Equality and The Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus.
KARLA KREITNER
KARDON GROUP
Why she made the list: When an LGBT businessperson wants to start a new endeavor or expand an existing business they are wise to start the process with the Kardon Group. Karla and the rest of the gang are experts at helping businesses make their way down the long and winding path of start-ups. Then, once the business is up and running they can utilize Karla’s other company, Kardon Events, to help plan and organize their meetings and parties. Any gay business owner can appreciate a flawless and seamless event! What else you need to know: Karla started Kardon with her partner, Donna (get it Kardon, Karla Donna?). The duo has been together for over 20-years and hope for at least another 20 more.

THE FENUXE 50:BUSINESS palmer marsh
OWNER OF BURKHART’S PUB Why he made the list: People often overlook the importance of bars in the gay lifestyle. Truth be told, bars are very important to the LGBT culture. Bars like Burkhart’s offer a safe haven for people just coming out, a gathering place for nonprofits and a stage for local talent. And it is nice to know that Palmer, as a straight ally, takes the time to understand the LGBT community. This allows him to run a business where we all feel safe to be ourselves. To date, Burkhart’s has donated over $250,000 to various HIV/AIDS organizations, hosted events that have raised over $1 million dollars for various HIV/AIDS organizations and has achieved first place twice in the AIDS Walk.
ALlison MCDONALD
AGLCC
Why she made the list: Allison is one of those rare Atlanta natives, originally from the ATL who has stayed in the city to help make it better. Her day job as a lawyer led to her involvement in AGLCC, but her networking skills led her to power. During her term as president of AGLCC she has helped raise the organization to an entirely new level. What else you need to know: She grew up watching the Braves and, even though he didn’t do much to help the team, has an affinity for Joe Torre.
What else you need to know: Palmer likes to spend his down time on the waves of the Atlantic fishing and relaxing.
PHILIP RAFSHOON
OUTWRITE BOOKSTORE Why he made the list: Anyone who is gay in Atlanta understands the importance of Outwrite Bookstore in our community. Not only does it stock great queer literature and serve up fabulous lattes, it is also the epicenter of all things gay in the ATL. Philip is revered for always being there when the community needs help. Even though Outwrite is challenged in an amazon dominated industry, Philip still welcomes nonprofits into his store for events and generously donates proceeds from those events to their causes. What else you need to know: Earlier this year Philip was honored by Georgia Tech with the 2011 Alumni Legacy Award. He is the first openly gay person to receive this award.
PRESENTED BY 20 : NOVEMBER 3, 2011

THE FENUXE 50:BUSINESS john szabo
FULTON PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM Why he made the list: Many times LGBT people can effect change in their daily lives simply by going to work in a traditionally straight occupation. John’s job as Director of AtlantaFulton’s Public Libraries is such a position. In his position John uses his experience as a gay man to influence the types of programs the libraries offer to students. One glance at the library system’s calendar of events and you begin to understand exactly why John is on this list. He also played a very important role in creating the LGBT Archives located in the Central and Auburn Avenue Branches. What else you need to know: John grew-up in Montgomery, Alabama before moving away and getting his degree from the University of Michigan.
DINO THOMPSON-SARMIENTO
BLUE FLAME RESOURCES
Why he made the list: Dino wears a lot of hats in his daily life. At one minute he is leading his PR company, the next he is dining at a fab new treatery in preparation of penning his “Dino’s Dish” column for Fenuxe and then he ends his day as the Senior Advisor of Atlanta’s chapter of GLAAD. Dino is an icon in the Atlanta LGBT scene, but one of his most important strengths is being able to bridge the gap between the LGBT community and the straight world. What else you need to know: Dino isn’t just multi-talented in business…he is also multi-lingual. He speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese and French.
KATHLEEN WOMACK
ATTORNEY
Why she made the list: Kathleen has been a practicing attorney for over 25 years. Over the course of her career she has been able to build a successful career around issues important to LGBT clients. She specializes in domestic partnerships, second parent adoptions, transgender birth certificate orders, and advanced directives for health care. Along the way she has also climbed the ladder of some traditionally straight associations such as State Bar of Georgia, Board of Governors and the Atlanta Bar Association. Her presence in these organizations gives a much needed voice for the LGBT community. What else you need to know: Before Kathleen was hitting the law books she was a park ranger at Mammoth Cave National Park. During her time there she discovered a passageway used in the Wild Cave Tour now known as “Kathleen’s Crawl”.

During Atlanta Pride 2011 he brought the crowd to their knees with a weekend full of events that included everything from legendary drag queens to world-renowned DJs. After graduation he went right to work in the financial world before becoming the king of Atlanta promoters.
BUBBA D. LICIOUS
DRAG DIVA, P.A.L.S. BINGO Why she made the list: There is no question that Ms. Licious is one of the leading ladies when it comes to Atlanta drag divas who work their wears for a cause. Bubba started perfoming drag in the late 80’s on a whim. Shortly after, she joined the legendary Armorette’s in 1989 and continued with them until 2001. She is now the head bingo caller for the ever-popular P.A.L.S. bingo held on the second Wednesday of each month at Jungle. Over the years she has been a huge part of the community raising over $4,200,000 for various causes. She won a ton of titles including Atlanta Homecoming Queen, Miss Hotlanta Softball and Countess of Atlanta.
PRESENTED BY 26 : NOVEMBER 3, 2011
KAT GRAHAM
ACTOR/SINGER/DANCER Why she made the list: Trying to explain why Kat made the list in a hundred words is like trying to transcribe “War and Peace” onto a grain of rice. Kat is best known for her role as Bonnie Bennet on “The Vampire Diaries”, but she is also a fierce ally to the LGBT community. Kat uses her visibility to remind everyone that we are human beings on this earth and each one of us deserves equality. Kat didn’t know what to expect when she moved to Atlanta to film the first season of “The Vampire Diaries”, but now she embraces the southern world and counts the House of Brooks as close friends. What else you need to know: Before Kat gained fame as an actress she went to school to learn music engineering. Her music caught the attention of Will.i.am who snatched her up and took her on a world tour as a musical artist.
JAY MCCRACKEN
SPIKED ENTERTAINMENT Why he made the list: Most people know Jay for his ability to spin some serious beats at the dance clubs around the city. But most people don’t know that he also runs a local entertainment company which helps keep other LGBT people in the city working. His company, Spiked Entertainment, specializes in event promotion, planning and staffing. What else you need to know: When Jay isn’t busy spinning or promoting, he sidelines as a male model. That’s right! He’s more than just a good beat. He is also a very pretty face.

ACTOR AT THE WORLD Why he made the list: When people think of theater in gay Atlanta the first name that pops up is Topher Payne. In fact, people new to the community may think he is the only gay actor/ writer in town. He has been named as the best actor and best writer multiple times by various local media groups and theater fans. He got his start back in 1997 when, as a teenager, his play “Road Hazards”, was produced by the New Stage Theatre. Since then his career has enjoyed great success. What else you need to know: Topher was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Also, he starred in a film called “Str8 Chaser” which won the audience award at the 2008 Out on Film Festival.
MARY EDITH PITTS
DRAG DIVA
Why she made the list: When Atlanta thinks of Drag Superstars Mary Edith Pitts is always mentioned. She has been entertaining people with her over-the-top comedy for over 20-years. People also love Mary Edith because she gives back to the community. She sits on the board of Jerusalem House and also throws an annual birthday bash in which all the money goes to HIV/AIDS organizations. What else you need to know: Off stage Mary Edith is a much tamer person who enjoys quiet nights at home or hanging out with close friends.
kevin robison
THE ATLANTA GAY MEN’S CHORUS Why he made the list: People who understand good music know exactly why Kevin made the list. Kevin has been the artistic director for the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus since 2007. Since his start, the chorus has delivered better and better productions. We look forward to what the chorus has in store for their 31st season. What else you need to know: Kevin is a much sought after composer and arranger. THE FENUXE 50 :MEDIA MELISSA CARTER
LOCAL PERSONALITY
MATT HENNIE
PROJECT Q ATLANTA
Why she made the list: Melissa raised a lot of eyebrows when she walked away from her sweet gig on Q100’s Bert Show. It was a move that took true guts as Melissa had nothing solid lined-up career wise. Many people expected her to fade into the background, but instead she made her presence even larger. She now writes a regular column for the Georgia Voice, she makes very regular appearances at major LGBT events and she continues to fight for all things LGBT. She may not be heard every morning on your commute, but trust us when we tell you her voice still carries.
Why he made the list: In a world saturated with blogs, magazines and websites Matt Hennie realized there really wasn’t a local resource for all things queer. That realization led to Matt founding Project Q Atlanta. In the three years since the launch, Project Q has become the go to source for LGBT news and information. None of this has come easily. Matt along with his business partner Mike Fleming work tirelessly to make sure all the gays in Atlanta know where to go, what to do and who to know. Of course the daily posting of a hot guy in various poses doesn’t hurt either.
What else you need to know: In 2002 Melissa required a kidney transplant to save her life. Since the surgery she has used her platform to raise awareness and funds through the Melissa Carter Transplant Fund at Piedmont Hospital.
What else you need to know: Before Matt launched the Q he spent five-years as the editor of Southern Voice. Overall he has been dishing dirt and takin’ names for about seventeen-years.
DON LEMON
CNN ANCHOR Why he made the list: Don has led a very public life in front of the camera with stints in several major market TV newsrooms and as a correspondent for Today and NBC Nightly News. In 2006, he settled behind the news desk at Atlanta’s CNN center and, for the most part, his personal life was never the story. That is until early 2011 when he came out as a gay man in his book “Transparent.” “Today I chose to step out on faith and begin openly living my own truth,” he said in an official statement. Since then Don has become the defacto-spokesman for various segments of the LGBT community. He now publicly supports great LGBT causes like YouthPride and GLAAD. One of the most rewarding outcomes of his transparency is the fact that others are also being inspired to lead a life of truth and honesty. Despite those who said that he couldn’t come out and
PRESENTED BY 30 : NOVEMBER 3, 2011
be a news anchor, Don has become even more influential and is routinely called on by CNN to cover some of the most important issues of our day. What else you need to know: During a 2010 interview with Eddie Long’s congregation he admitted to being a victim of sexual abuse as a child, this was a fact he kept secret from most of the world, including his own mother, until he was 30 years-old. Don now speaks frankly about his experiences in an effort to let others in similar situations know it is okay to reach out for help. “I believe grace healed me I was luckier than most that I could disconnect and let it be the past.”

THE FENUXE 50 :MEDIA DEBI LOWRY
AUTHOR
Why she made the list: Debi has long been a vocal ally to the LGBT community. Debi’s complete acceptance of the gay community allowed her son to come out to her without the fear of being rejected. Shortly after her son opened up to her she realized there were lots of people who would be shunned by their families if they were to come out as gay. This realization lead to Debi penning a book named “Three Grim Fairy Tales and a Happy Ending”. The book is a message to parents of LGBT children which aims to give them a different view of their gay children. What else you need to know: Debi was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but grew up in Garden Grove, California. She has been in the ATL so long she is known as “Mama Deb”.

KirSTEN OTT PALLADINO
EQUALLY WED
Why she made the list: When Kirsten and her fiancée (now wife) Maria were planning their wedding they discovered a “gaping hole” in magazines and websites aimed at same-sex marriage planning. Because of this they had a very hard time finding gay and gay-friendly vendors for their wedding. With that thought in mind they launched “Equally Wed” together. Now as editor-in-chief and publisher respectively they have created a place for engaged LGBT couples to easily navigate the world of samesex wedding planning. What else you need to know: Kirsten and Maria became the mother of twin boys on March, 14, 2011.

THE FENUXE 50:NON-PROFIT MICHAEL BAKER
POSITIVE IMPACT Why he made the list: Michael is the Director of Advancement at Positive Impact, which is an organization that is dedicated to reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS. As Director of Advancement at Positive Impact, Michael works tirelessly to raise money for the organization. He also works closely with the Board of Directors to insure the mission of the organization is on track all while handling the communications as well. What else you need to know: Before dedicating his life to Positive Impact he worked as the LGBT liaison for Atlanta Mayor Franklin in her first campaign.
wes berry
JOINING HEARTS Why he made the list: As Director of Special Events for Joining Hearts, Wes is instrumental in organizing the annual pool party which recently shattered all previous donation records with a stunning $185,000.00. This money is split between AID Atlanta and Jerusalem House. What else you need to know: Wes just launched his own event staffing company called SōSH with his partner Ethan. The company aims to take staffing to a completely new level.
PRESENTED BY 32 : NOVEMBER 3, 2011
CHANDLER BEARDEN
M.I.S.T.E.R.
Why he made the list: One of the best parts about being a member of the LGBT community in Atlanta is the fact that the movers and shakers come in all different shapes, sizes and colors. The fact is never more present than with Chandler. On the outside he looks like a tough guy you wouldn’t want to meet in an ally (or would you?), but inside he is nothing, but pure joy and light. His day job keeps him deep in the world of helping gay and bisexual men understand the dangers of un-protected sex and the value in being tested on a regular basis. What else you need to know: When not at work Chandler can often be found performing his duties as a guard for the local chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, aka the Flaming Sugarbakers.
CHRIStopher BESS
FOR THE KID IN ALL OF US Why he made the list: Before Chris was named President of For the Kid In All of Us he spent several years working as a volunteer. When the organization needed a new leader Chris proudly stepped into the roll. His first year as President has seen the non-profit continue on a very steady path to success. He has easily maneuvered them to host the first ever “Project Prom” and another successful “Backpack in the Park” event and is now leading the charge to this year’s “Toy Party.” What else you need to know: When Chris isn’t raising much needed money and toys for local children he is working as a nurse in the Medical Affairs Department of UCB.

THE FENUXE 50:NON-PROFIT GUNZA BLAZIN
FLAMING SUGARBAKERS Why she made the list: One of the things we love about the Atlanta Drag community is their willingness to give their time and energy for a good cause. Then there are people like Gunza Blazin who had a realization that she wanted to give even more back to a community who gave her safety and security. That is when she started the process of forming the Atlanta Chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. You may not know their names, but they are the ones dressed in fabulous face make-up/paint wearing nun’s habits. They work tirelessly to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS and other causes. What else you need to know: Gunza’s real name is Calvin Williamson and he is a real hottie.
RAYMOND DUKE
IN THE LIFE ATLANTA Why he made the list: Raymond’s day job as President of In the Life Atlanta made him a musthave for our Fenuxe 50. Under Raymond’s direction, this year’s Black Gay Pride Festival one of the most successful of all time. What makes this truly special is the fact that Raymond stepped in without missing a beat after the original and cherished co-organizer, Raymond Durand, was senselessly murdered last year. This year’s pride was wonderful and a perfect homage to the man who co-led it for so many years. What else you need to know: Raymond’s busy life affords very little down time, but when he does get some time to relax, he likes to enjoy it with a home cooked meal, some wine and great conversation.
PRESENTED BY 34 : NOVEMBER 3, 2011
JEFF CLEGHORN
SLDN
Why he made the list: Atlanta Attorney Jeff Cleghorn heads the law firm of Kitchens, New & Cleghorn and was instrumental in the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. After two long decades of relentless dedication, his goals were finally achieved when the discriminatory policy was removed. What else you need to know: Jeff has served all over the world as an officer in the United States Army including stints in South Korea and Germany. He has also been honored with Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Staff Commendation Medal and the Parachutist Badge.
TRACY ELLIOTt
AID ATLANTA
Why he made the list: Tracy made this year’s Fenuxe 50 list because of his brilliant handling of his duties as the executive director of AID Atlanta. However, Tracy’s contribution to making the LGBT world a better place doesn’t stop with his day job. Tracy also sits on various boards including the Southern AIDS Coalition and the Atlanta PD LGBT Advisory Board. What else you need to know: Before Tracy hit Atlanta he was the executive director and chief operation officer of the Damien Center in Indiana.

THE FENUXE 50:NON-PROFIT LINDA ELLIS
THE HEALTH INITIATIVE Why she made the list: Since joining The Atlanta Lesbian Health Initiative in 2002 as the their first full-time executive director, Linda has raised a ton of awareness for the organization. Over the last nine years the initiative has broadened its circle of influence to include all things LGBT health related. This new level of respect meant the organization needed to widen their scope. In September of 2011 they changed the name to “The Health Initiative” in order to better serve the LGBT community as a whole. What else you need to know: Before taking her job with the Initiative, Linda was the Executive Director at YouthPride.
jim farmer
OUT ON FILM Why he made the list: Atlanta’s Out on Film festival is one of the longest running LGBT film fests in the country. However, the much heralded event was in a downward spiral until Jim took over as Executive Director in 2008. Once on board he breathed new energy and life into the fest. Since Jim has had the reigns, Out on Film has had some if their best years. This year’s event ranks in as the 3rd most attended festival so far. What else you need to know: When Jim isn’t rounding up fabulous queer cinema he works as a film publicist and freelance writer for the GA Voice and Project Q Atlanta.
GLEN PAUL FREEDMAN
ATLANTA PD LGBT ADVISORY BOARD Why he made the list: Over the years Glen Paul has had his hands in dozens of local LGBT organizations. He has sat on various boards including: HRC, AGLCC and InterPride to name a few. His most recent appointment as a member of the newly formed Atlanta PD LGBT Advisory Board puts him at the forefront of one of the hottest button issues in the city. With all his years of service he is a great voice for Atlanta’s LGBT community. What else you need to know: Before his life as a political consultant he spent 19 years in the airline marketing automation and travel distribution services industry.

THE FENUXE 50:NON-PROFIT jeff graham
GEORGIA EQUALITY Why he made the list: When people think of LGBT Equality they usually think of it in terms of marriage equality, but part of Jeff’s job as Executive Director of Georgia Equality is to remind people there is a lot more to equality than just getting hitched. Jeff continues to fight for work place non-discrimination protections, anti-bullying statutes and hate crime related legislation. What else you need to know: Jeff got his start in activism in 1989 working with the legendary ACT UP as the Atlanta chapter’s media coordinator.
DON HUNNEWELL
G.R.E.A.T. ATLANTA Why he made the list: Don is the president of G.R.E.A.T. Atlanta which helps Atlanta’s local LGBT community thrive. When he isn’t focused on helping other businesses he is helping bar owners manage their liquor inventory with his Holey Glass system. The system, which he invented, is so reliable a bar owner can manage his or her inventory even if they are on a beach thousands of miles from their establishment. This may seem good only for the bar owners, but at the end of the day it is also good for all of us. Less loss for bars means less expensive drinks across the board. Who can complain about that? What else you need to know: Before Don created Holey Glass he was a bar and nightclub owner himself. He created his system so he could actually get a day off without losing his shirt.
J.D. KELLUM
ATLANTA COTILLION Why he made the list: Being a part of the Atlanta Cotillion Debutante Class is a lot of fun, but it is also a lot of work. The main point behind being a debutante is to help raise money and awareness for the awesome work of AID Atlanta. Most of the debs work their butts off to make sure they reach their individual goals. JD has been a part of the deb class twice, each time setting the standard for future generations of Cotillionaires. But this year JD set the standard so high it will be very difficult for anyone to break it anytime soon. JD’s total? $42,000.00. Nearly a quarter of the $171,000.00 raised for the entire event. What else you need to know: When JD is not shattering fundraising records he is helping people realize their dreams of home ownership. He and his team at J.D. Kellum and Associates are skilled in all areas of real estate.
PRESENTED BY 40 : NOVEMBER 3, 2011
KATHY KELLY
MEGA FAMILY PROJECT Why she made the list: Kathy has been putting the causes of the LGBT community at the forefront of her life for many years. First as the founder and executive director of Marriage Equality Georgia and now as the founder and executive director of MEGA Family Project, Kathy has earned her place among the Fenuxe 50. The most amazing thing about Kathy? She always seems to be one step ahead of the needs of our community. She was spearheading equality before it was popular and now leads the charge to equality in parenting. What else you need to know: Kathy was an alternate delegate for Al Gore at the 1988 Democratic National Convention.

THE FENUXE 50:NON-PROFIT KERRY LOFTIS
JOINING HEARTS Why he made the list: In 2000, Kerry volunteered as a bartender for Joining Hearts as a way to give a little back to the community. Little did he know 10 years later he would be leading the charge in helping people with HIV/ AIDS live better. Kerry led Joining Hearts to a record shattering donation of $185,000 this year which is split between AID Atlanta and Jerusalem House. What else you need to know: When Kerry isn’t changing the world he is selling real estate via Keller Williams and hanging out with his partner of 8 years.
terence mcphaul
YOUTH PRIDE
Why he made the list: It is getting easier to be an out gay youth these days, but it wouldn’t be so if it weren’t for the work of people like Terence. As the leader of Atlanta’s YouthPride for the last several years he has helped raise awareness for LGBTQ youth and offers them a safe place to deal with the unique issues which face them. What else you need to know: Terence has a back ground in psychology. He has also written two books “The Celebrity Psyche” and “The Psychology of Hip-Hop”.
TRACEE MCDANIEL
JCT
Why she made the list: Tracee is a fierce advocate for transgendered rights and currently serves as the only transgendered person on the Atlanta Police LGBT Advisory Board. This board serves to increase communication, understanding, and information between the LGBT community and the Atlanta Police Department. Tracee loves to live life to fullest, reminding people that LGBT really just equals queer and no matter what letter you represent we are all in this together. What else you need to know: Tracee has been a member of the Atlanta Pride Committee’s Board of Directors and also frequently contributes to Alternative Perspectives on 89.3.
JOSH NOBLITT
SAINT MARK UMC Why he made the list: One of Josh’s main jobs at Saint Mark UMC is to lead a special ministry called the Federal Defender Program. This program’s goal is to work at stopping the use of the death penalty. As part of his duties he spends a great deal of time advocating for indigent people asking the courts to sentence them to life rather than death. Josh’s work shows the world that LGBT people can be found in every arena. It also shows we care about more than just fighting for equality and hanging out in bars. What else you need to know: When Josh isn’t fighting the good fight he may be found on stage in one of Saint Mark UMC’s theatrical productions.

THE FENUXE 50:NON-PROFIT DREW PLANT
FAMILY COMMUNICATORS Why he made the list: Drew has been making Atlanta a better place for the gay community for the better part of 20-years. He is the owner of Plant Communications and founder of Family Communicators which is a local networking group for gay media, PR, and marketing professionals. Recently Dick Yarbrough penned an anti-gay rant in the Marietta Daily Journal, Drew responded with a rant all his own. His rant set the ball rolling and the Marietta Daily Journal was inundated with anti-Yarbrough rants. What else you need to know: Drew also lends his hand to LGBT candidates in need. Some of his benefactors have included Keisha Cunningham, Alex Wan and Joan Garner.
jon santos
AIDS WALK
Why he made the list: We figured if Jon was good enough to be singled out by the President of the United States he is good enough to make the Fenuxe 50. But of course Jon is much more than just a letter in a book. As the leader of the Atlanta AIDS Walk he tirelessly works to ensure that the event runs smoothly and efficiently even as the event gets bigger and better each year. Jon is also very well known for his effusive personality, willingness to go the extra mile and his panache for making people smile. What else you need to know: Jon moved to Atlanta from Los Angeles on a whim and found the city so amazing that he decided to make it is home. And we are all better off for it.
RICK WESTBROOK
POSITIVE IMPACT
Why he made the list: Rick, like many others on this list, is a member of the Fenuxe 50 for a wide variety of reasons. One reason is his amazing work at Positive Impact. Another reason he made the list is his tireless work as a founding member of drag troupe “The East Point Possums” as well as the local chapter of “The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.” What else you need to know: Rick has been in a 17-year relationship with his partner and dreams of a world where we are all equal.

THE FENUXE 50:POLITICS PAUL HORNING
VICTORY FUND
Why he made the list: Currently Paul sits on Board of Directors for the LGBT political group known as the Victory Fund. Paul previously held the title of Chair for the organization. He is also one of the founding members and the current Co-Chair of the LGBT Leadership Council at the Democratic National Committee. This means if you want to get elected in the ATL Paul needs to be on your friend’s list. What else you need to know: When Paul isn’t pushing the gay political agenda he is managing money as a Senior VP at Morgan, Stanley, Smith, Barney.
REESE MCCRANIE DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS Why he made the list: Reese isn’t the only openly gay member of the Mayor’s team, but because of his position he is definitely the most visible. Reese’s ability to bridge the gap between the Mayor’s office and the LGBT community is a major reason why the Mayor has open communications with the Atlanta gay community. What else you need to know: It isn’t an accident that Reese works in the political world. He is a political junky who enjoys offering up an opinion on any and all current hot topics.
congressman JOHN LEWIS
UNITED STATES CONGRESSMAN Why he made the list: Even though there are a lot of similarities to the civil rights movement of the 1960s and the equality movement of today, there are few people who have worked painstakingly for both. Many of the leaders from that era don’t believe in equality for the gay community. Or if they do, they don’t necessarily put themselves out there for our cause. And then there are people like Rep. John Lewis who is helping lead the way to LGBT equality. Rep. Lewis has been publicly fighting hard for our rights for more than 15 years. An avid opponant of the Defense of Marriage Act, Don’t As Don’t Tell, discrimination in the workplace, and a staunch supporter of HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention, and research, Lewis is a man who sticks to his principles and stands by them. “I have fought too hard and for too long against

discrimination based on race and color not to stand up against discrimination based on sexual orientation. I’ve heard the reasons for opposing civil marriage for same-sex couples. Cut through the distractions, and they stink of the same fear, hatred and intolerance I have known in racism and in bigotry,” says Lewis. We can all learn a lot from this man. He doesn’t see color nor does he see sexual orientation. He only sees people and understands we are all here on this earth together. What else you need to know: Rep. Lewis walked side-by-side with Martin Luther King Jr. on many occasions and has been jailed or arrested more than 40 times.

THE FENUXE 50:POLITICS mayor KASIM REED
CITY OF ATLANTA MAYOR Why he made the list: There are a lot of people who would like to throw Mayor Reed under the bus for the dreadful Eagle raid. However we have never had in the history of Mayors of Atlanta, a mayor who has been so dedicated to the LGBT community. He has nine openly gay staff members, he routinely attends LGBT events without need for fan fare and he uses his position as mayor to raise awareness for various anti-bullying campaigns. He is a valuable ally to our community. What else you need to know: Mayor Reed was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, but has spent most of his life in Fulton County. He was first elected to public office in 1998 as a Georgia House Representative.
PRESENTED BY
ALEX WAN
ATLANTA CITY COUNCIL Why he made the list: Alex is the only openly gay member of the Atlanta City Council. He is also the Director of Development for Jerusalem House which is an organization that finds shelter for those afflicted with HIV/AIDS. Alex’s hard work in both positions gives him the unique ability to give our community a voice, which effectively provides help to those who need it the most. What else you need to know: Before venturing into politics and activism, Alex was very successful in the business world. In 1997 he was named as one of “Forty Top Georgians Under 40” by Georgia Trend Magazine. And in 2007 he was named as one of the “25 Most Influential Asian-Americans in Georgia” by the Georgia Asian Times.

Dear Mary,
askMARY
I have a co-worker who seems like a really nice guy, but I am beginning to think that he is a pathological liar. At first it started off as “jokes” like: “I brought bagels, I got a great deal because they were three days old.” But oddly they were still warm. My personal favorite was when he told us his boyfriend was blonde and didn’t age. Well guess what? His boyfriend has brown hair and looks about 50. Today he came in and told this long elaborate story about how he was kidnapped during pride and held hostage by three men and forced to eat apple cinnamon oatmeal all weekend. Then they just let him go. Please help. I don’t know if he is ill or is just trying to be funny. Signed,
Crazed and Confused
Dear Craisin,
Am…am I your coworker? Is this about me? Listen, I don’t have time for another intervention. Obvs, the best idea here is story topping. Every time he comes in with one of these tales, just one up him. Apple cinnamon oatmeal, eh? Tell him they made you eat frittata and cottage cheese with Craisins. I mention Craisins because clearly, your friend is Craisin, i.e, in the act of being crazy, to wit: my boyfriend was craisin’ last night! He wouldn’t let me have any of his frittata and he said Carson shouldn’t have been voted off Dancing with the Stars when we all know those Daisy Dukes were just wrong. What was Carson thinking when he picked that outfit? He was craisin’ (so many applications!) Otherwise, I think meeting his every story with a raised-eyebrow silent stare is appropriate, followed by turning and walking slowly out of the room, possibly staring at him over your shoulder with one eyebrow raised and judgey face on the entire time. On second thought that might make you look crazier than him (you craisin’!) but it will probably keep you busy at work. I mean, what else are you doing there? Working? You craisin’ if you think I believe that. Craisin.

The members of the Fenuxe 50 made the cut due to their hardworking efforts to better our community. Some people are popular just because… Take this quiz to see where you land on the “popular just because scale.” 1. When you walk into a party people tend to… A. I don’t really get invited to parties. B. A few people take notice and wave hello. C. The entire room stops talking, some drop their beverages, others gasp and the clock stops.
2. How many friends do you have on your facebook? A. 1-300 B. 301-1500 C. I don’t have friends, I have likes, bitches.
3. If you walk down 10th street people point at you and say… A. Is that toilet paper on their shoe? B. That person looks like “what’s his face.” C. They are the person I want to be!
4.Have you ever been in a pride parade? A. Once, but it was totally an accident. I was driving to Denny’s and accidentially got stuck behind the Las Margaritas float, oh my at the boys in briefs. B. Yes. I was part of my company’s float this year. C. I am the grand marshal every year.
5. Your typical weekend consists of…
A. Marathons of HGTV’s “House Hunters”, some frozen pizza, gummi bears, and lots of sleep. B. A couple times a month you will find me brunching with friends at Radial. C. The only thing typical about my weekend is the fact that it is always filled with fundraisers, parties, brunches, and cocktails. I usually need a weekend after my weekend.

Find Out If You Made The List
Quiz Key
1-7 Points: You don’t wield influence anywhere except in your own home (maybe not even there). But don’t worry anyone can overcome this problem. Loosen-up and gain some confidence. 8-12 Points: You are closer than you think. All you need to do is insert yourself on the correct committee or board and you’ll have a shot. 13-15 Points: You don’t need lists or need to know if you are popular. You have people for that because, yeah, you are popular just because…

Washington
In a world completely overrun by female singer/songwriters it’s nice to know there are talented folks like Washington. She’s a mixture of a rock and roll band, Elvis Costello and Cyndi Lauper. Originally launching her career in Australia, she’s hit the US and is already selling out shows for her new record “I Believe You Liar” which just came out on October 11th. We sat down with this enigma to ask her a few questions. Fenuxe: What can we expect from your new album?
words by Malcolm Montgomery
Washington: Well, it's a grimy pop record, I suppose. When I wrote a lot of the songs I was listening to people like Elvis Castello, Siouxie and the Banchees, and a lot of Motown, so I guess those influences came through. It's a little bit punky, but friendly too. Fenuxe: What's influenced your musical style? Washington: I studied jazz in college, so I think that I will always have some jazz in the music I make. I also love old showtunes, old Hollywood musicals, B-grade horror films, Michael Jackson, practical jokes, before and after photos, Fred Astaire, The Replacements, and ramen. Fenuxe: You've got a huge following in Australia. What's your strategy to make it equally as big in the US? Washington: Bake sales! No, that's not my plan. I mean, what happened back home was such a terrific, unplanned thing that I couldn't really hope to replicate it, especially in America, which is so big. I'm just happy to be able to be living somewhere as inspiring as New York as I go about writing my next record. Fenuxe: Who would be your dream artist to collaborate with?
Biggest guilty pleasure: Reality TV shows Favorite reality TV Show: “I used to be fat” Quote to live by: “Nothing cures the blues better than doing the 'Monster Mash' in your kitchen with Kleenex boxes on your feet.” (Washington, we completely agree!) Check out Wasington’s new LP “I Believe You Liar” www.washingtonmusic.com.au
Washington: Rufus Wainwright, but only on a lush grandiose dreamscape record. Or that guy from the Magnetic Fields. That guy is awesome. Fenuxe: What music have you been listening to lately? Washington: I've just discovered 'The Suburbs' by Arcade Fire, about a year late. It's fantastic.

HEy Girl HEy Brrrrrr girl, love that fall chill in the air. Now I can wear a scarf and catch up with my fashionably forward friends who wear them all year long. I don’t know about the rest of you but I LOVE the fall. I love the smell of wood burning, snuggling under the covers, (with my new pussy)[see photo below], and the opportunity to exercise outside without passing out. I also love that Pride was in October when drag queens can wear makeup on their face instead of around their necks. I think this was my favorite Pride experience to date. Some friends invited me to the Georgia Aquarium party which was packed! Hmmmm, gays and fish, Go diversity! Saturday, I signed autographs at the Pride Medical Booth and was blown away by the number of people who told me how much they missed me. I miss you too! Sunday, Fenuxe Magazine asked me to ride in their car so they had to install a few “Wide Load” signs and reinflate their tires. I wasn’t sure what kind of reception I would receive after having not performed regularly but I was honestly moved by all the screams of “We love you Mary Edith!” Of course, it didn’t hurt to have all those hot guys walking with us (“How U durrin?”). Thanks Fenuxe for asking me to be a part of it!
At the end of the parade, I went back to sign more autographs. The best part of the day came when I got a turkey leg and was chomping down on it. I hadn’t eaten since 9:30AM, so girl, I was tearing into that meat. I also love the picture and video (on my facebook) of Jimmy and I from Broke Straight Boys[see photo above]. Funny to meet someone you’ve, uh, spent time with yourself thinking about. Then it was off to perform at the Starlight Cabaret. Everything was going just fine till my first jump and then my left knee decided to start hurting. I guess not being in heels on a regular basis let the muscles in my knee relax too much because I was in real pain. I was thinking to myself, “You have to get through this!”, “The show must go on!” Almost at the end, my knee gave in and I almost fell so I took off the heels and finished the number. My body said, “Get yo ass home, sit down and shut up!” I hope everyone had a great Pride! Love and lashes,
