LETTER TO THE EDITOR Tyler, I loved the 2012 Fenuxe 50 issue. It is wonderful that you have recognized these special people. What surprised me the most about the list is how many of them I know. I see some of these people out and about and didn’t know how involved they are in the community until this issue I’ve know Mary Edith Pitts for over 25 years. We were both young and skinny when we met. I was there for Mary’s first few nights out in drag and even carried her body bag around for years to her performances. It has been a pleasure, I should say an honor to watch her grow into the person she is today. I believe the amount she has donated to charity may be a lot more than what has been reported. Richard is a great friend and an honest and caring man as well. Cleo Meyer has been a friend and my insurance provider for many years. I was at Conner’s baby shower. She and Donna should be role models for gay parents everywhere. Cleo does offer the best insurance rates ANYWHERE! I have a list of clients that I have referred her that can back up that statement. Brandon Rudat, WOOF! As good looking as he is, it hasn’t affected his ability to be a real person who is approachable and he is a genuinely nice man to boot. I have to tell you a story about Brandon. We work out at the same gym. One afternoon, he walked by a row of 6 gay men walking on the treadmills. He said hello actually he said “How Yah Doin Fellas” to us in that deep manly baritone voice of his. As he passed, one of the guys faked a fainting spill on the treadmill. It was the most funny thing I’ve ever seen. I read all that gay rags in Atlanta and I enjoy them all for many reasons. In my opinion, Fenuxe has the best writers, is the most professional, has the best content and the contains best professional quality ads of any of the other gay magazines in Atlanta. I would also say that your format could compete with any national magazine on the news stands today.

BIG THINGS, SMALL STEPS: SURGE T B LG S ’ R E B M E N OV
Berlin Sylvestre - Staff Writer
In the 2008 race to The White House, foreign policy was the frontrunner of issues. A welcome change from the laser-sharp focus of the “radical gay agenda” that the previous president used to divide the nation, America’s role in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as our relationship with the budding nuclear powers of Iran, shaped the candidates’ platforms. This election, with our shrinking presence in the Middle East and dreadful unemployment numbers, in-house responsibilities helmed the charge. A familiar victor emerged, backed largely by women, racial minorities, and the LGBT community.
that enjoys the 1,138 benefits, rights, and protections that our taxes should afford. And it isn’t selfish; it’s a legitimate need in a society that prides itself on freedom. America, it would appear, is beginning to see things our way. In spite of an intense state-wide campaign to keep the LGBT community eternally out of wedlock, and concurrently barred from all the rights that accompany marital bliss, three states left the decision up to the people this go ‘round — and as fate (and common sense) would have it, the people threw bouquets our way.
“America is beginning to see things our way.”
Barack Obama will keep his seat at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and continue shaping our policy as domestic issues occupy the lion’s share of his attention. But, in spite of garnering the most news coverage, domestic issues aren’t limited to education, health care, and the economy. For some of us, it starts with fundamentals, like rights. The right to marry, the right to adopt, and then the right to live in a household
14 : No vember 15, 2012
Maine, Maryland, and Washington have opened their arms to LGBT lovebirds who want to tie the legally-recognized knot, joining the ranks of Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Iowa, and New York. (Minnesota voted down an amendment that would define marriage as being between one man and one woman.)
The about-face shouldn’t be surprising, given the normality in LGBT life that’s slowly emerging in the media, but if past is precedent, leaving social decisions up to the people tends to end poorly for those whose welfare hangs in the balance. (See: Segregation, slavery, women’s suffrage.) The courts, being the arbiters of Constitutional fairness, have typically been the green light at the end of the civil rights tunnel. Knowing that is something of a relief, given that DOMA’s neck will soon be stretched across the Supreme Court’s chopping block. Now, with ten states leaving the anti-gay political machine in the annals of embarrassing history, it’s only a matter of time before the bogus statistics that link homosexual families with child abuse/lower test scores/moral bankruptcy/etc. are debunked and flung far into the depths of faux-science past. Ambitious though it may be to say aloud, the air this November brings the notion that it won’t be long before the paradigm shifts clean into acrossthe-board equality … in America … imagine that.
But there’s more. In a related victory for the LGBT community, Wisconsin voters elected Democrat Tammy Baldwin, the country’s first openly-gay senator. Some Atlantans may remember her as the keynote speaker for this year’s HRC Atlanta Dinner and Awards Gala. Despite a pretty heinous campaign in which her opponent, Republican Tommy Thompson, aimed to paint her as out of touch with family values, she made history by taking the high road in a dirty campaign. In a relieving shift of political mudslinging tactics, the topic of her sexuality had little effect on voters as a negative. One might even speculate that the relentless nature of Thompson’s anti-gay message was the final nail in his political coffin. Though we’re watching American society slowly uncross its arms to unhook the velvet rope that has long separated “them” from “us,” we as a community are fully aware that President Obama’s recent endorsement of same-sex marriage doesn’t mean equal rights are a go. The congressional pushback we get on a daily basis is formidable, but the gay community is used to small steps. Fortunately, the tides are beginning to turn and we can celebrate the significant victories we picked up this month while watching intently for Obama to transform his advocacy into federal legislation we can count on.

Party for Adults, Toys For the Kid “The people were dressed in their finest of threads, while visions of bubble-butts danced through their heads…”
Nico Stoerner - Staff Writer
The Toy party is here and For the Kid in All of Us is ready to bring the holidays to families in need. Discussing the impact the organization has on the Metro Atlanta Area, President Alison Hall told us, “It is an honor to be able to witness the joy not only on the faces of the children, but on those of the parents and guardians for whom a small burden has been lifted.”
“The theme this year is Cirque de Jouet (Circus of Toys)”
Although focused on providing holiday cheer to the Metro Atlanta area, For the Kid has also done an extraordinary job of arranging delicious drinks, bites, and entertainment for all who help the cause. “For the first time, our VIP guests will be entertained by performance artist David Garibaldi and have the opportunity to participate in a live auction for his original artwork,” Hall continues. An “America’s Got Talent” finalist, David’s specialty is performing “Rhythm and Hue,” a stage act during which he rapidly creates paintings of famous rock stars. Next to the VIP area you’ll be able to access the Silent Auction which includes only the finest of wares, gifts, and services that you’ll be able to give to your loved ones or indulge in for yourself over the holiday season. “The theme this year is Cirque de Jouet (Circus of Toys), so we hope our guests will come excited to start the holiday with us, and watch the pile of toys grow throughout the night.” Pushing the theme over the top, performers from Cirque du Soleil will punctuate the evening’s festivities while guests pour in and donate toys. “Our guests [are] very generous. We ask for gift donations with a suggested minimum value of $20, but we receive a good number of bicycles, iPods, and gaming systems. The extravagance often comes in the quantity of toys donated. We’ve had quite a few guests bring bags of gifts, not just the one.” Throughout, there will be sweet treats and savory bites to enjoy, and holiday spirits provided by Diageo will be poured. 22 : No vember 15, 2012
Founded in 2003, For the Kid in All of Us was established to help struggling families, caregivers, and children during the winter holiday season. Initially, The Toy Party gathered members and friends of the LGBT community, and in 2006 the organization developed Backpack in the Park to help collect school supplies for struggling families as well. Since 2003, For the Kid in All of Us has distributed more than 35,000 toys and gift cards through The Toy Party. They also collected 7,100 backpacks filled with school supplies and gift cards as well as raised more than $470,000 to donate to numerous nonprofit organizations to help Georgia’s less fortunate. A 100% volunteer organization, For the Kid in All of Us brings people together for a good cause and helps lift up those families that need it most. “With best of intentions for good girls and boys, the gays of Atlanta brought tons of great toys.”

Ah, the service industry… Who doesn’t dream of folding, and folding, and folding clothes; picking up toys throughout a store; listening to children scream and cry; watching shoppers trample each other for the latest Play Station; or having little darlings pee on them while posing for pictures? Who I ask you, WHO?! For those of you who unpack your Christmas trees in October and practice Christmas carols in July, this is where the article ends. NPR’s David Sedaris is back and is celebrating his 14th smash year performing the “SantaLand Diaries” at our very own Horizon Theater. Originally written as an essay by David Sedaris from his book “Holidays on Ice,” it became famous after he read it on NPR. The “Santaland Diaries” was adapted to the stage, and Horizon has been producing the show for 14 years. The hilarious production stars Harold M. Leaver who plays an out-of-work writer who takes a job as a Macy’s Department Store Elf in Macy’s SantaLand named Crumpet. The show is essentially performed as a monologue by Crumpet, but includes a little extra fun with some interjections from two additional actors lov-

NIGHTLIFE
Mama Mary Of BURKHART’S Berlin Sylvestre - Staff Writer
Netherworld. Real Spanish moss hangs from the banisters and walls inside and out. A bubbling cauldron springs to life and the smaller bar off to the right is decorated with the insanity of a clown-infested fun house. Enormous witches, demons, and corpses are hung high, leering over the crowd, hand-crafted by John “the master mariner from Manhattan” who still can’t believe he gets paid to do it.
M
ary Marsh is a pistol. She’s a spitfire of a little woman with a twinkle in her eye and a sweet Southern accent that sounds like music. She greeted me warmly in her place of 25 years, Burkhart’s, looking as country-western in her little black vest and white button-up as the Patsy Cline she had blasting through the system. I immediately congratulate her on the Fenuxe 50 and ask her if she’s going to the Ice Party on January 12th. “Hell yes, I am!” She offers me a drink as she recalls last year’s helicopter ride to the event. “It was the most fun I’ve had on a ride, ever. The pilot thought I was crying. I said ‘Hell no, man, I’m laughing!’” On this breezy October day, the multi-storied staple of gay Atlanta is decked out in the most ghoulishly innovative Halloween decorations I’ve ever seen outside
26 : No vember 15, 2012
I tell her that all the work they put into the bar must have cost a fortune. “We’ve made $100,000 in improvements recently,” she says and I believe it. The wood that surrounds us shines like new and the granite countertops of the bars feel solid. It wasn’t always like this. Mary and her husband Palmer took over the place on Halloween Day in 1987. It was a gay biker bar wrought with drugs and money issues in a city whose gay scene wasn’t nearly the Mecca for us that it is today. As it turned out, the current owner wasn’t paying taxes and the bar had sunk to nearly $400k in debt. “You got to pay Uncle Sam before you pay yourself,” she advises. “It’s Uncle Sam, your employees, then you — you come last on the bill.” She tells me that for years, the bartenders made more money than she and Palmer did. Palmer worked for four years straight without a single day off and Mary sloughed through two years before they finally paid off their house and relocated to a more suitably-sized pad.
When asked the secret to their success: “For starters, we’re not druggies,” she says, taking a seat next to me. “That’ll do it. But really, it’s just hard work. It takes an amazing amount of coordination to get everything right.” She mentions the food, schedules, parties, and call-ins among the many things that can trip a bar up on a day-to-day basis. “If you run a good bar, no one can see all that, though — and they shouldn’t.” I ask if she thinks the climate is better for opening bars now than in 1987. “When people tell me they plan on opening a bar nowadays, I tell them they might as well get in their car, roll the windows down, and toss all the money out as they ride. They have no idea.” Now that Mary’s watching the 25th anniversary of their bar roll around, she can proudly proclaim: “We’ve raised a million dollars as a bar.” Though Burkhart’s supports a variety of causes, she says most of the money goes to Project Open Hand, a charity that sustains meals for those in need. Burkhart’s keeps busy. “It certainly doesn’t feel like 25 years. It has gone by so fast. I look in the mirror sometimes and wonder who that scary old woman is,” she says, the twinkle in her eye working its magic. “Nowadays, I only use the mirror to check for boogers and food in my teeth!” I almost shoot Diet Coke through my nose and she laughs heartily, head tilted up to the ceiling to let it all out with me.
“I love my children — every last one of them. You tell Atlanta that.” “I’ll always be 16 at heart,” she tells me, winding down.
no fury like a gay man mad!” I raise my glass.
I wonder aloud if bar owners in the city see each other as competition or friends in the business and she perks up even more. “Listen, I’ve never judged any other bar,” she says. “We mind our own business over here at Burkhart’s, even when the favor isn’t returned sometimes. We’ve always taken the high road. Always.” She tells me that any competition through the years has always been one-sided from other bars.
“I love my boys,” she says, her tone suddenly tender. “They call me Mama for a reason.” She talks about patrons who have come out and watched everything good they’ve known about life — family, friends, jobs — fall away. “I understand them when their own parents won’t try. I’ve seen tears shed many times on both sides of this bar and I love my children — every last one of them. You tell Atlanta that.”
“I used to be the bouncer here, too,” she chimes, a fact that, given her size, is a bit startling. She smiles. “Honey, I got forty gays behind me at any given time who’d kill someone if they touched me — and there ain’t
I confess that the first time I came to Burkhart’s, a drag queen made a raunchy joke on my behalf and it was a riot. It made me love this place instantly. Mary’s glad to hear it. “I remember one time, a performer, who passed away not too long ago,
called me out in front of a whole bunch of people and said, ‘You know that the bigger the diamond, the better the blowjob you give.’” I couldn’t help but look down at the large rock around Mary’s finger. We make eye contact and both crack up. “I was so embarrassed,” she confides. We finish our drinks. “Well, I need to get back to my spaghetti,” she says, leaping from her stool. She throws a warm hug around my neck. “You come back, Berlin — and bring your girlfriend!” she insists, though I never mentioned having one. I guess when you’ve been in the community this long, you pick up on that kinda thing. I leave Burkhart’s smiling and it doesn’t leave my face as I head down Piedmont, feeling like I just joined the ranks of Mary’s gay army. She is, perhaps, the godmother of our dreams, so it makes perfect sense that she’s known in this city, and most notably to her boys, as “Mama.”

You also know good food, and expect nothing but the best to satisfy your discerning palate – so naturally you expect the same from the watering holes and restaurants you patronize, as well as the chefs who prepare your meal. Enter Executive Chef Russel Kook of the recently re-opened “La Pietra Cucina” cleverly dubbed “LPC.” Hailing from highly-acclaimed restaurants including “Cibo Matto” and “The Florentine” in Chicago, as well as “David Burke” in Las Vegas, Kook knows Chef Russel Kook food. Furthermore he was featured at New York City’s the James Beard House and on Food Network’s “Iron Chef America.” He may be most familiar as the runner-up on Fox’s “Hell’s Kitchen” Season 8 where he was awarded an incredibly rare perfect score. “When I received the opportunity to create amazing Italian fare in one of the top cities in the country, it was a no-brainer. I love Atlanta and I am having a ton of fun building our new menu,” stated Kook. 28 : No vember 15, 2012
“We have huge respect for what La Pietra has done until now. The accolades for the quality of food has solidified it as one of Atlanta’s best Italian restaurants. In the spirit of that, and in bringing on a nationally acclaimed chef, we hope to continue that tradition while introducing more approachable Italian fare to what is already a stellar menu. And, yes, we have created a much more accessible valet parking option,” explains Bob Amick, Concentrics Restaurants. As you take a seat to look over the hand-crafted menu take a moment and grab a drink. In the spirit of Italian culture, why not a nice glass of wine? Prefer white? Try the Lamelle Chardonnay (Tuscany) – it’s light and buttery without too much oak. Rather have red? Pour some Sella & Mosca Cannonau (Sardinia) – its robust flavor profile and bold flavor will match the delicious items on the menu, accentuating their flavor. Now that you’ve taken care of your thirst, let’s just go ahead and talk turkey… or in this case, starters. The pan-fried octopus served with giant white beans, grilled frisée, smoked arrabiata sauce, and pickled pearl onions will have you going back for seconds, while day-boat scallops served atop cauliflower purée and topped with parsley-almond relish helps ensure your cravings for surf will be beaten back with delicious flavor profiles. Not a fish fan? Not a problem. Try the various other starters offered at this fantastic restaurant. From Charred Fiorello Peppers served with pickled feta and garlicky bread crumbs that will add a little spice to that
red you’re sipping on, peppery arugula salad served with pickled fennel, shaved parmesan, and hazelnuts, to the Brussels sprout salad served with hardboiled egg, pecorino grand cru, marcona almonds, and lemon vinaigrette – there is something for everyone among the starters. Ready to really eat? Well try some of their delicious Linguini Carbonara, served with housemade pancetta, pecorino grand cru, duck egg, and cracked black pepper – it is a delicious blend of unique and savory delicacies that will have you dropping the small talk and reaching for your fork. Prefer to stick with the seafood? Not a problem. Try the flounder with Uncle Bob’s caponata and saba, but be sure to ask for a lemon wedge to enhance its delicate flavor. Looking for some soul food? Look no further, the braised short rib served with Anson Mills polenta, cippolini onions, and pine nut gremolata will have you thinking of grandma’s cooking… if she cooked Italian fusion and was incredibly inventive.

All the delicious bites they offer will have you reeling, but if you just so happen to still have room for dessert, both their warm chocolate budino served with sea salt, nutella, and EVOO and their Sicilian hand-dropped zeppole (it’s something akin to a Spanish churro reinvented) served with espresso crema will hit the spot.
From start to finish, LPC has done a great job of bringing Atlanta something interesting and new – add to that their great location and comfortable, contemporary feel and you’ve got yourself the perfect place to dine, celebrate, and date.

Shopping Mall-ternatives Berlin Sylvestre - Staff Writer
Atlanta shopping is diverse, so Fenuxe hit the road in search of some off-the-beaten-path shops to nab some special stuff for those special someones.
BRUSHSTROKES 1510 Piedmont Avenue NE
Everyone’s into laughter and the folks down at Brushstrokes have their fingers on the pulse of comedic curios. Anne Taintor magnets fill an entire wall with witty one-liners that make the mundane a gas. Queen Elizabeth bobbleheads keep a close watch as you peruse guitar-shaped grill spatulas, hand sanitzers, wall-to-wall greeting cards, adorable pet supplies, gorgeous mini-statues, chic and kitsch home decor, sterling body jewelry, and scads more. Their inventory bears the mark of an owner who knows his stuff. Brushstrokes also has an unbelievable variety of hard-to-find LGBT books, CDs, and DVDs. Better still, they’ve got wrapping paper and really neat gift bags, like the Sock Monkey wine bottle cover, to save you another holiday shopping trip. Also in: Glass cases of one-ofa-kind ornaments sure to keep your guests in stitches.

RICHARD’S VARIETY STORE 931 Monroe Drive, Suite 113
SCARLETT LOVES RHETTRO
436 Ponce De Leon Avenue NE Scarlett’s has some really cool stuff that takes a little work to sift through. That’s ok. On the day I visited, I found a Yugoslavian leather jacket from the 70s and a mini-fridge that looked fresh from the set of Mad Men. I got the impression that the guys from “American Pickers” would dig this joint. Owner Darlene Cox whispers that Mike from AP actually has stopped by – and what good picker wouldn’t? The store features a “Make Me An Offer Sale” every day it’s open and everything upstairs is half off. Sure, the inventory is scattered about, but seldom does treasure ever sit in the open. The work pays off.
True to its name, Richard’s runs the gamut of variety in each section of the store and believe you me: it’s a big store. First up, the kids’ stuff. They’ve got baby toys galore (from Ty Beanie Babies to Thomas the Train) and stuff for the little one with motor-skills like Legos sets, Lincoln Logs, Barbies, but even cooler than that: a science experiments section! (Actually, the shelf of musical instruments brings it close to home for me.) For adolescents, there are a kajillion books there on endless topics, posters galore, lava lamps, wacky stocking stuffers like bacon bandages and miniature voodoo dolls. (Hmm. Might wanna hold off on that one.) For adults, there’s a respectable selection of glassware and kitchen goods, curio cabinets and hutches, chest-high vases and Persian rugs, framed works of art and quality posters from Dalí to DaVinci. The place is packed, but wellorganized, a one-stop-shop of neat and affordable stuff. Remember: For the Kid in All of Us is having its 10th annual Toy Party December 2nd. This is a great local spot to grab a few well-priced goodies for the kids who aren’t guaranteed gifts just because it’s Christmas.

BOY NEXT DOOR
1510 Piedmont Avenue NE “We have shoes you can’t get from a catalog,” Raymond Dowis, general manager of Boy Next Door Menswear tells Fenuxe. “These comes directly from a London runway.” And indeed, the high-fashion footwear he pulls from unopened boxes have the sheen and unique cut you’d expect from a European catwalk. In fact, much of Boy Next Door has that feel. They’ve recently released their very own clothing line that has that simple, clean look of pieces that pair with just about anything, which is convenient: You can complement them with the stylish assortment of jackets, button-ups, pants, and (most notably) underwear. Oh, boy is there underwear at Boy Next Door. Leather jockstrap? Check. Andrew Christian boxer briefs? Check. See-through undies that’ll make him blush? Of course! Heads up to the ladies: Ray advises shoppers not to let the name fool you. “Our stock isn’t just for the guys!” (Think: Boi Next Door.)

JUNKMAN’S DAUGHTER
64 Moreland Avenue NE
This is a classic shopping spot in Little Five Points that brings in people from all around. Their vast inventory includes wigs of every hue, corsets for every shape, Dia de Los Muertes-themed merchandise, masquerade party paraphernalia, music tees and posters from Marley to Mastodon, giant movie stills from A Clockwork Orange to Boondock Saints, cartoon lunchboxes, an aweinspiring shoe selection for men and women, and everything Star Wars. It’d probably be easier to name things they don’t sell, but even easier for you to stop in and take a look for yourself. Word to the wise: Bring cash for parking on busy days!
HELIOTROPE
248 W. Ponce de Leon Ave Nestled in the heart of downtown Decatur, lies Heliotrope - a stocking stuffer’s paradise of holiday commodities. Candles and flavored teas usher shoppers in with an aroma that fastidious homemakers are sure to appreciate while the dynamic stock of often hilarious must-haves keeps them enthralled. Goofy welcome mats, glow-in-the-dark beer pong balls, children’s books, and 1800s greeting cards fill their shelves. Spinning racks of calendars range from the works of Kandinsky to the visages of hot European royals (Prince Harry, anyone?). If you’re tasked with getting the gifts for those ‘difficult to shop for’ relatives, stop by Heliotrope and let the shopping take care of itself.

Unfortunately, the most delicious parts of a meal can also be the most dangerous. Cooking meats kills the bacteria that can make us sick, but the potential for cross contamination due to touching various surfaces can result in unintended illness. How to help? Provide the picky chef in your life with the Simplehuman Sensor Pump. This amazing gadget provides a practical solution that prevents them from touching a single surface to pump soap when washing their hands after handling raw foods. Attractive, sleek, and adjustable, this product runs on four AA batteries and can hold 13 fl oz of liquid soap. One of my best additions to the kitchen, this will be an item that will get daily use and keep your loved ones healthy. ($44.99 @ Simplehuman.com.)
As they say, “The best way to a person’s heart is through their stomach,” and in this day and age, who doesn’t appreciate well-cooked cuisine from a loved one? Although we may do the dishes from time to time, these special hosts bring us many moments of delicious bliss without a second thought.
3. Vinturi Wine & Spirit Aerators Are you on the hunt for a gift for the special oenophile (wine lover) or spirit enthusiast in your life? Look no further: Vinturi’s line of wine and spirit aerators are among the most fabulous additions you could provide for a loved one’s wet bar. The concept is simple: Wine and spirits which have been allowed to breathe tastes better because as they breathe, they open up and release their intended aromas and flavors. Although decanting is the traditional solution to this, it is time consuming, cumbersome, and inconvenient (especially for cleaning). These incredible products’ patented designs speed up this process so well that they can provide perfect aeration in the time it takes to pour a glass, instantly making your $20 bottle of cabernet taste like a $40 bottle of special reserve. You cannot go wrong with a set of these great aerators for just about anyone on your list. ($39.95 @ Vinturi.com)

1. Halo for XBOX 360 Possibly one of the most anticipated games this season, Halo 4 has gotten some stellar reviews. With its thrilling storyline, intense competitive multiplayer help, and awesome combat mechanics Halo 4 is sure to continue the series’ reign as one of the premier shooter games on the market. Their environments are striking, their characters charismatic, and their creation and customization tools have never been so powerful. Thriving on cooperative play, this new campaign is best won by employing team tactics and utilizing vehicles. ($59.99 @ GameStop)
2. Dishonored for PS3 and XBOX 360 First person stealth at its best, Dishonored (developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks) promises to be an incredible game. Having only just recently released this October, critics are raving about it. An atmospheric, entertaining, and well-crafted assassination sim, it does something that has become increasingly rare in video games: it is ORIGINAL. With stunning visual effects, great steampunk technology and themes, and unique characters, this game will keep you entertained. Completely dependent upon your choice, the freedom in the game is wonderful. Although not quite as free-range as Skyrim, you also aren’t going to be led from one mission to another. If you’re looking for a gamer give this one a shot. ($59.95 @ GameStop)
3. Assassin's Creed III for PS3 and XBOX 360 You’re destined to be familiar with the hooded figure balancing on some high-up perch commonly associated with Assassin’s Creed providing you a bird’s eye view of their stunning attention to detail in the breathtaking graphic design of the game landscape. The newest incarnation of the game thrusts you into an entirely new setting that couples a fascinating period in history into a gamer’s playground. Set in revolutionary America and chock-full of interesting storyline missions including information gathering, stalking, and high-profile assassinations, there is no shortage of things to do. Another wondrous game and only just released, this will make for a perfect holiday gift for the gamer you love. ($59.99 @ GameStop) 50 : No vember 15, 2012
GIFT GUIDE
For the Pets
The holidays aren’t just for people you know - in fact eight in ten pet owners also buy gifts and “special holiday treats” for their pets. With that in mind, consider some of these items for your precious pooch and darling doggies this holiday season. If not for your own four-legged friend, you can help spoil your friend’s canine companion.
1. Dyson Grooming Tool Dog hair leaving you or your bestie’s clothes looking more like felt than denim? Fur gathering around your home like tumbleweeds? Allergies getting the best of you? Have no fear - Dyson is here with yet another innovation. Vacuum your dog. That’s right: With the Dyson Grooming tool you can de-shed your dog while also eliminating clean up by vacuuming the dander and hair from the tool itself. What better way to say “I love you” this holiday season than to keep that special someone from looking like the crazy cat lady? Just sayin’. ($69.99 @ Dyson.com)
2. The Mod Dog Collars and Leashes Specializing in beautifully designed and constructed martingale collars, The Mod Dog provides numerous different options for the stylish pet. The martingale collar is especially useful because it remains more loose than a traditional collar until it is engaged (when the dog pulls). This means that when adjusted properly, your pooch will be able to breathe, drink, and eat comfortably, but he won’t be able to escape if you so happen to come across a squirrel at the park. Among the best collars we have come across on the market, be sure to consider The Mod Dog this holiday season. Why shouldn’t Fido have a few different looks, too? ($12 - $30 @ The Mod Dog and The Whole Dog Market in Virginia Highlands.)
3. Fresh baked goods and gift cards at The Pet Set
4. Doggy Daycare Gift Cards for Piedmont Bark
Who doesn’t like to spoil their dogs, and even their friend’s dogs with a treat here and there? Furthermore, who doesn’t like a freshly bathed puppy? Specializing in gluten-free, all natural dog treats, The Pet Set has plenty of delicious and adorable pet treats that you’ll love to give out. Also consider picking up a gift card so that special someone can get their dog’s next bath for free - they will love you for it. Base price per bath is ($25 @The Pet Set).
Know someone with a darling doggy who will be working long hours over the holidays? Why not make their life a little easier and spoil their pooch too with a gift card for doggy daycare at Atlanta’s premier doggy day care center, Piedmont Bark? Boasting over 10 years of experience, expert staff, spacious indoor and outdoor areas, and countless testimonies of their great service. Piedmont Bark is a haven for hounds in the city. The best part? Their pet will be as “dog tired” as your friend after working those long hours! Check out their excellent multi-day packages ranging from ($199 for a 10-day pack to $799 for a 50 day pack).
