FENUXE 7.26.2012 Would you like a side of homophobic hate with

those waffle fries? Last December I urged our readers to stop supporting Atlanta chicken staple, Chick-fil-A. The poultry giant has been quietly fighting against our community for years, but they’re not being quiet about it anymore! Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy (aka “Daddy got me my job”) just proclaimed on a radio show that he knows how we should live our lives and then doubled down when he confirmed his contempt for our community in a Christian newspaper. I’m not giving one penny of my hard earned money to his hateful chicken company. I hope you, your friends, and your family will join me in this effort. This situation highlights the reason why Fenuxe has the Best of Atlanta issue. We want you to see the businessmen and community leaders that are truly promoting our rights and the timeless American values of fairness and equality. It is important that we recognize these businesses and individuals for standing up and fighting for what is right. This is exactly why in concert with our Best of Atlanta issue, we celebrate the annual Fire Party. We’re going big again this year with fire breathers, contortionists, aerial acrobats, sexy fireman models, and so much more! Trust me – you don’t want to miss it! If you haven’t purchased your tickets yet, you need to: http://thefireparty.eventbrite.com See ya there!

8.4.12 Best of Atlanta Winners Honored in Style Nearly 148 years after General Sherman set Atlanta ablaze, another fiery event will leave its own mark on the Southern metropolis. On August 4, Fenuxe Magazine will host its annual Fire Party, one of the hottest and sexiest events of the summer, to celebrate your choices for the city’s best businesses and organizations. Fenuxe doesn’t deny its flair for extravagance, and the Fire Party won’t disappoint those with high expectations. Divulging too many details would spoil all the blazing fun, but, a taste of what’s to come will hopefully appease your burning curiosity:

The Entertainment Some of the most scorching hot talent can be found right in Atlanta, and these top-notch entertainers will undoubtedly ensure the Fire Party will be remembered for a long time. Among several of the party’s fire performers are Timothy Mack of Imperial OPA Circus, Cody Herndon of Eccentric Productions, and the über sexy Chandler Bearden, who is one half of an independent fire act. After finishing a tour with Cirque du Soleil in 2008, Timothy moved to Atlanta and founded a circus. He’s a regular performer at Jungle’s Nectar Party and wows crowds with various acts, including fire swords and fire eating. Cody, another Nectar regular, is primarily known for his fire-breathing work and his stilt walking. Chandler has flexed his flame skills at the Beltane Festival, a Midsummer Nights event, in the streets of Atlanta for Independence Day, and most recently at Tongue and Groove as the iconic dancing devil of Fireball Whisky. You certainly can’t have a fire party without fire, and you definitely can’t throw a shindig with music. Thanks to DJ Mike B, guests can expect some serious ass-shaking music all night long. During his long career, Mike B has opened for the Black Eyed Peas, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Outkast and Ludacris. He’s also the main mix show DJ for Atlanta’s Q100. Most importantly, though, he quite literally sets his records on fire while performing. A few other performers for the evening will include Nicole Paige Brooks, Princess Charles, and Mary Edith Pitts. Ms. Pitts will also be raising money for Jerusalem House and AID Atlanta, with a portion of drink sales going to both organizations.

Voter Guide If you thought deciding the winners of the Best of Atlanta was tough, just wait until July 31. Georgians will vote in the primary elections, and the variety of candidates is astounding. We’ve narrowed down the political nominees to the candidates we believe will best serve the LGBT community if elected to office.

State House District 56 Ken Britt For more than 30 years, as an openly gay man, Britt has dedicated himself to issues which impact the LGBT community including equality, HIV/AIDS, children’s issues, and electing qualified LGBT and fair-minded candidates to public office. In addition to many LGBT organizations, he has also been involved in numerous mainstream community and civic groups. Britt served on two successful local campaigns of openly LGBT candidates as chairman of Alex Wan’s election as the first openly gay man to serve on the Atlanta City Council and as treasurer and political advisor for Joan Garner’s election as the first LGBT person to serve on the Fulton County Commission. opponent: Mable Thomas (KenBritt.com) DeKalb County CEO Jerome Edmondson In his first bid for political office, Jerome Edmondson brings 18 years of experience as a CEO to the race. If elected, he plans to assign an LGBT liaison for the DeKalb Police Department and will ensure the entire police force goes through sensitivity training. Edmondson also wants to create a diversity business development office within his cabinet whose focus will include outreach and support to the LGBT business community. opponents: Gregory Adams and Burrell Ellis ElectEdmondson.com State House District 58 Simone Bell Simone Bell has served as the State Representative for Georgia House District 58 for three sessions in the House. She is the first African American out lesbian to serve in a State House in the United States and 32 : JULY 26, 2012

serves on the following committees: Children and Youth, State Planning and Community Affairs and Human Relations and Aging. Opponent: Ralph Long SimoneBell.com State House District 60 Keisha Waites In her short time as member of the Georgia General Assembly in State House of Representatives, Waites has worked on important issues that affect every community throughout Georgia. Within 30 days of being elected to the House of Representatives, she began actively lobbying her colleagues concerning House Bill 630 that would protect state employees from being fired due to their sexual orientation. opponents: Gary Davis, William Fisher, Antonio Lewis, Latrenka Riley KeishaWaites.com Fulton County State Cour Jane Morrison Jane Morrison first served on the bench from 2000 to 2002 as Judge Pro Hac Vice in Atlanta Municipal Court. She routinely conducted bond hearings and evaluated defendants for participation in pre-trial diversion programs. From 2003 to 2005 Jane served as a part-time Magistrate in the State Court of Fulton County. opponent: Melynee Leftridge Jane4Judge.com State House District 85 Karla Drenner During her tenure in the Georgia House of Representatives, Karla Drenner has championed many issues, including renewable energy, environmental protection, education, small business, job creation and occupational and personal safety. opponent: Unopposed KarlaDrenner.org

Atlanta’s gay community has been at the forefront of moving this conversation forward. It has provided much of the fuel for my gallery’s evolution.” –Bill Lowe

How a Sales Tax Could Improve Atlanta’s Woes

tribulations

Best Tire-Popping Pot Holes. Best Congested Roadways. Best Public Transit to Limited Areas. No doubt Atlanta more than deserves these “accolades.” For a major American city, this sprawling metropolis certainly lacks efficient transportation. However, there are efforts being made to improve Atlanta’s transit woes. Citizens will have the opportunity to vote on July 31 for the Regional Transportation Referendum, which could fund $8.5 billion in transportation improvements through a ten-year one percent sales tax. To find out more about the T-SPLOST referendum we spoke with Dan Williams, a staff member of Central Atlanta Progress. Offering its support of the sales tax, Dan’s organization is heavily involved in the economic development, quality of life, urban planning and marketing of the Downtown Atlanta community.

66 : JULY 26, 2012

What is the main transit problem the city faces? Dan: If I was to use one word it would be “connectivity.” We just simply lack the ability to get to what Mayor Kasim Reed calls “the last mile.” If you live in Old Fourth Ward you don’t have the ability to hop on transit or a bike path and easily get to a place in Midtown or Downtown. We are so far behind other cities in terms of connectivity around the core of the city. Will we see more bike paths? Dan: Between 45 and 60 percent of the street projects in this referendum will be what we call “complete streets” and will include bike lanes. If you want to bike between Decatur and Atlanta and want to use DeKalb Avenue you’ll have a bike lane on that street. It’s going to be a much safer road because we’ll take out the reversible lane, put in a turn lane, and add bike lanes. What about streetcars? Dan: With this referendum we’re able to build in streetcars that will go east and west across Midtown. That will either happen on North or Tenth. If you live

near Piedmont Park you’ll be able to hop on a streetcar and ride down to Edgewood and go to Sound Table and Church, then ride the streetcar to Downtown. Why not a tax on gas? Dan: There is just no political will for that. It’s just not going to happen. It’s not a solution that’s viable. If you did have a gas tax increase you’d have to hand over that money to GDOT and the people responsible with the state would determine what’s important rather than regional community leaders. That money might go to other places around the state for things we don’t really need. If you want to build the Beltline and transit then T-SPLOST is it. What if voters don’t approve T-SPLOST? Dan: If we don’t pass the referendum you will see many more toll roads around metro Atlanta. You can be sure of that because the department of transportation and state and local governments have to find a new way to pay for roads and transportation. Toll roads are going to be the way they’re going to do it. The referendum is one way to guard against more toll booths.

I

The Incredible

Cathy Rigby Image by Offhand Photography

Shannon Jenkins, Associate Writer, Lifestyle & Culture I’m totally crushing on Cathy Rigby. The petite actress and former Olympic gymnast strolled into the Fenuxe office recently to promote her upcoming production of “Peter Pan” at the Fox Theatre, and I just fell in love. If she has a “best gay” he better watch out. Honestly, I could just gush for hours about how genuine and lovely she is in person. Getting to know Cathy was truly a pleasure. Shannon: How did you get your start in acting? Cathy: I started after my second Olympics in 1972. I was offered different parts in TV and commercials. I took voice lessons and acting classes for seven years in California. I was as obsessive about my training as I was gymnastics and I loved it. I started from the bottom up. Eventually after seven years my voice teacher said it was time to audition. So I did for Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz.” I got the part, and my first song was “Over the Rainbow” in front of 2,000 people. It was a pretty heavy and exciting time. Shannon: What was it like to be Peter Pan for the first time? Cathy: What I found most difficult was letting go and being playful and mischievous and not being predictable, not being careful. Everything else I did in life I was very careful. It was the first time I had to find my inner child. Ever since that time the role has grown. If anything I’ve learned to quit worrying and quit trying to be perfect and be more spontaneous and just enjoy the role. Shannon: What do you like most about playing Peter Pan? Cathy: The thing I think is the most fun is the flying. You’re soaring from one side of the stage to the other. It’s choreographed but there’s lots of room to improvise. I have two people who fly me—one takes me up and down and the other from side to side. They are the best partners you could possibly have. They breathe with you; they think with you. 70 : JULY 26, 2012

They feel the movement. We’re all in sync. Shannon: I’d be afraid the wire would snap and I’d crash to my death. Cathy: That wire holds 1,200 pounds. I feel pretty good about it. Shannon: Well, you have at it. What’s the biggest challenge of “Peter Pan”? Cathy: Eight shows a week is a lot. It’s physically demanding. You want to be social and go out with the cast, but you can’t go to the local pub and hang out. The next day you have a show and you have to use your voice. Shannon: How does live theater compare to gymnastics and the Olympics? Cathy: For ten intense years of my life and two Olympics I ate, slept, drank, and breathed every moment of it. You tend to burn out quicker. The pressure is so enormous. You have one chance every four years and you hope you hit. The beam is this wide and if you wobble the difference between first and sixth place can be a tenth of a point. All these people are counting on you. You’re counting on yourself. You’ve spent all this time and you hope it all comes together. It’s a lot more stress. Shannon: Which play is on your to-do list? Cathy: I have done so many great shows. I would like to do something new. I don’t know what that is yet. I’ve played a dog, a granny, Peter Pan, the Cat in the Hat, Annie Oakley. I don’t know. I would love something brand new. After doing “Steel Magnolias” recently I want to do a lot of funny, happy stuff. I love

drama but not for weeks on end. Shannon: You’re in a new movie, right? Cathy: I just did an American Girl film that came out in July called “McKenna Shoots For the Stars.” I played a gymnastics coach. I’m very curious to see how that goes over. Shannon: What’s your guilty pleasure? Cathy: Taking a bath in a big Jacuzzi. Or just lying in bed doing nothing. Shannon: Do you have any favorite TV shows? Cathy: My husband has the power over the remote because I don’t care enough about it. I have watched more movies on Hitler, World War II, the Civil War, outer space and black holes. I truly have learned so much more than I ever did in school. I tend to watch more of the forensic stuff. But I do like the History Channel and “Downton Abbey.”

Shannon: What must you have in your green room? Cathy: Fairy dust. I must have fairy dust. Clean tights. And usually hot tea. And sometimes donuts. Shannon: You’re not aging. What’s going on there? Cathy: Oh yes I am! I did have a little boy say, “You’re really good in ‘Peter Pan.’ But as I get up close I see you have wrinkles.” Thank god for theater!

Shannon: What else do you like? Cathy: I love animals. If I could, I’d have a zoo. Shannon: Is there anything you haven’t done that you’d really like to do? Cathy: I want to be on “Dancing with the Stars.” I really, really want to do that. It would be interesting to be put into a competitive situation like that again.

Holler Poodles, I just want to take a moment and thank all of you who have helped me raise over $34,000 since December 2010. I absolutely could not have done it without your support and the support of Jerusalem House, Fenuxe Magazine, Richy Pugh and countless others. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I’m so excited to announce that my annual birthday fundraiser will be August 4 as a part of Fenuxe Magazine’s Fire Party. All I can say is watch out! This will be the party event of the season. I know you’ve heard it before but you don’t want to miss out on this one. Absolutely something for everyone. Tyler has shared some of the details with me and all I can say is “WOW!” Hold on to your seats! I hope you will join me August 4 at Atlantic Station for my annual birthday fundraiser. A portion of the drink sales will be split between Jerusalem House and AID Atlanta. In other news, I had the pleasure **wink wink** of performing at the new Oz Campground over the July 4th holiday weekend, complete with a fireworks spectacular. They pulled out all the stops and made sure we all had a great time. I had performed there under previous management but the new owners have made major improvements to the campground and care about everyone’s experience. I love that they emphasize this is “your” campground. They want you to be happy. I also love that they embrace diversity because everyone is well represented. You must come check it out! Thought of the week: “The fear of being nothing, achieving nothing and becoming

82 : JULY 26, 2012

nothing should be way bigger than the fear of making mistakes. A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.” (George Bernard Shaw). Mistakes help us discover who we are. With every mistake that we make we discover more and more about ourselves, about who we are, about our limits, about our capabilities, about what we can and cannot do. They help us be more compassionate and more tolerant with ourselves and others. “There is a power inside every human against which no earthly force is of the slightest consequence.” (Neville Goddard) Love and lashes,
