“HOME IS WHERE the heart is,” “Home sweet home,” “Home is where you hang your hat.” There’s a reason so many home-inspired cliches exist. Our love for our domain, our castle, extends far beyond just a place to live or a covered dwelling. Our home is a place of comfortable solitude and peaceful privacy. While we were preparing our home design issue, tragedy struck the great nation of Japan. We were once again reminded Mother Nature offers no compromise. Thousands of people lost their lives and hundreds of thousands of people lost their homes.

The openly gay interior designer's plan to conquer Atlanta one bold, funky piece at a time.

16

FENUXE.COM

Interior designer Jonathan Adler is about to spread the gospel of his famous Happy Chic home décor line throughout Atlanta. The Westside Urban Market will be home to the openly gay Adler's 14th boutique bearing his name. A potter by trade, Adler sold his first designs to Barneys New York in 1993 and never looked back, and now offers his bold colors and funky graphics worldwide. He's even designed interiors for the “real” Barbie Malibu Dream House, despite rumors that he decapitated his sister's Barbie doll in 1974. The mischievous Adler (from his website: “JonathanAdler.com. Your 24-hour pot dealer.”) got with Fenuxe to discuss scouting Atlanta for the perfect spot for his boutique, the spring colors to incorporate into your home and Madonna's influence on his design style.

“We're lucky to live in an era when eclecticism reigns.” Fenuxe: How hands-on were you in scouting out a location in Atlanta? Were there other locales discussed besides Westside Urban Market?

Adler: I was very hands on and visited many times and Westside Urban Market just felt perfect. As for the exact location of my new boutique, it's no accident that it's next to Taqueria Del Sol and Star Provisions and Sid Mashburn. I have done some serious damage to my waistline and my wallet at those fine establishments. Fenuxe: Did you have time to relax while here in Atlanta? Hit any hotspots?

Jonathan Adler: My fave hotspots (aside from the aforementioned Star Provisions, Taqueria and Sid Mashburn) are Belvedere and Pieces, both of which are truly inspiring and creative. Unfortunately, my trips to Atlanta have been fast and furious but I still keep hoping to run into the Real Housewives. Fenuxe: Tell us about the “Happy Chic” aesthetic. What does it bring to a home?

Adler: Happy Chic is my brand ethos that your home should make you happy. It's about bringing a sense of joy and levity in your surroundings while still being unimpeachably chic. Fenuxe: What colors and trends will We Be seeing in our homes this spring?

Adler: We're lucky to live in an era when eclecticism reigns – it means that there are no hard and fast rules. Personally, I'm obsessed with the color grey right now. I think it makes the perfect backdrop for pops of bold color. Fenuxe: What's the biggest mistake someone can make when deciding to

redecorate a room?

Adler: I think the biggest mistake is designing rooms that do not fit your lifestyle. If you do not entertain formally, do not have a formal living room, you'll just use it as a hallway to get to the den. My bloke and I realized this and put a ping pong table in the middle of our living room and now we use it all the time. Fenuxe: On the Jonathan Adler manifesto on your website, one of the statements is, “We believe that when it comes to decorating, the wife is always right. Unless the husband is gay.” Which is hilarious by the way. Have you caught any flak for that?

Adler: Nope, because it's true! Fenuxe: You cite designers David Hicks and Gio Ponti among your muses, plus you include Madonna in that list. What is it about her that influences your design style?

Adler: Madonna has no fear and lives her life on her own terms. She is brave and optimistic and always changing and updating her style - I find that inspiring. And I love her music, of course. Fenuxe: Any other current music that inspires you when designing?

Adler: I've never said no to a bit of Katy Perry and a soupcon of good old Serge Gainsbourg. Fenuxe: Did you really decapitate your sister's Barbie in 1974? That's just cruel.

Adler: It's on the record. It happened. Jonathan Adler

OHHH THE COLORS! The materials! The furniture! The accents! Home décor decisions can be overwhelming, but not if you zero in on the hot trends and subtle changes that will make your pad POP this spring. Luckily the experts from a pair of local upscale home décor stores are here to help. Larry Pritchard, owner of Owen Lawrence, and Hazel Studstill, design associate at Room and Board, weigh in with their picks.

It’s a win-win!

Don’t be afraid to glam it up a bit this spring. “We are seeing lots of use of silver, gold and crystal in many materials,” says Pritchard. Studstill says natural textures for sofas and chairs are on her radar. “It’s a fresh look that feels great to live in,” she says. Follow with vibrant colorful accents like throw pillows and other accessories and now you’re updated for spring.

Changing your accents and lighting can make a room come alive. Studstill recommends a new lamp to create an artful effect or a pendant to spruce up your dining area or hang low over a nightstand. You can also customize your own accent or floor pillow with any number of fabrics to really personalize your home. Or add a versatile accent like an ottoman that doubles as a side table with a tray or an extra seat during spring parties.

When looking for the latest, hottest home décor colors of the season, seek out blues and whites. The team at Owen Lawrence is seeing this not only in fabrics, but also in lighting, tableware and accessories. Room and Board has a variety of new fabrics to choose from for chairs, sofas and sectionals, including some hot textured neutrals like Durand Almond, View Wheat and Trip Oatmeal – so you’ll have the latest looks and get your recommended daily intake of nuts and grains. 18

FENUXE.COM

But remember, you don’t have to do a drastic overhaul to make your home sing this spring. Subtle changes can go a long way.

Adding artwork and accessories is another subtle option to consider. From paintings and sculptures to vases and candlesticks, the possibilities are limitless. Embrace the options you have without the hassle and you and your man can make the upgrades your neighbors will be talking about till summer!

WHY WOULD I TRUST A CHEF TO REMODEL MY KITCHEN? “Because I have the knowledge & experience to build a kitchen that is both beautiful and functional for you.” says Remodeling professional David Sturm, founder of Attention to Detail Home Remodeling in 1997, “A nice design is pleasant, but pairing it with a functional space, will allow you to love your home all over again.” After a career as a gourmet chef at some of Atlanta’s top restaurants, such as Bone’s & Pano’s and Paul’s, for the past 14 years, Sturm has incorporated his knowledge around a kitchen with the education of a certified kitchen & bath remodeler to design & construct some of Metro Atlanta’s most beautiful and functional kitchens, elegant baths and basement transformations.

“The kitchen is the center of a home, attracting family and friends alike. A well designed kitchen is important whether you are a gourmet chef or a microwave chef. Sturm concludes, "We listen to your needs and concerns to ensure the project is done the way you want - on time and on budget!" In any area of your home, if both Design and Function are important to you, then Attention to Detail Home Remodeling is a perfect match for you.

OFF TO MEET THE WIZARD... STEVE HIGHTOWER HAS a soft spot for kids in need. The high-end hair salon owner raised $40,000 for children’s charities through his fashion show fundraiser last year, and since it was such a success, he was asked to do it again this year. But what theme would be most effective and appropriate?

Most of the children benefiting from the show are terminally ill and a majority are in foster care. Hightower calls their stories “absolutely heartbreaking.” “A lot of them talk about how they want a home. And I just started thinking, ‘What can I do to bring out the child in all of us, something we can all relate to, and something that everybody remembers?’” He hit the perfect fit with the Wizard of Ozthemed fundraiser “There’s No Place Like Home,” taking place April 8 at The Fox Theatre. The night will begin with drinks, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction. Over 100 different items will be up for bid, including Airtran tickets, local art, restaurant gift cards and a weekend stay at the 5-star Sea Island Corser Hotel. Characters from The Wizard of Oz will even be present for photo ops! Then the runway comes alive for a fashion show – but no ordinary fashion show. A hair show will be incorporated into the festivities, showcasing styles from Hightower’s namesake hair salon. Models will strut down the catwalk wearing the

20 FENUXE.COM

latest styles from Boy Next Door, Elements of Style, Guffey’s Formal Studio, Atlanta Beach, Topaz Gallery and more. It all leads to an over-the-top finale when the children in need will appear dressed as munchkins, escorted by the Oz characters as the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus sings “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” In other words, keep your tissues handy, folks. This one’s going to be a tearjerker. It’s a finale that mirrors the emotion Hightower displays when discussing the benefit of raising this money for these kids in need. “It will provide so much for the children. It will provide wheelchairs for the children, medical beds, lifts, medication,” he says. “Anything that goes to help the kids, we will do.” THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME Benefiting Childkind, Fragile Kids Foundation and The Center for Children & Young Adults April 8, 2011 at 7-10PM at The Fox Theatre’s Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon Tickets available at www.childkind.org

The Season to INDULGE The warmer weather in Atlanta means a lot of things – dogwoods bloom, the patio at Cowtippers fills up, the cruising at Ansley Mall hits a fever pitch. It also means the return of popular Thursday night event INDULGE to The W Midtown for its third year of upscale thrills. A different theme is on tap every week, and celebrity appearances are a regular indulgence. Kelly Rowland, Adam Lambert, Jasmine Guy, Paula Abdul and Debbie Allen are just a few of the celebrities that have hit up the event in the past. The third season kicks off with premiere night on the 31st, featuring a spring fashion show by Midtown designer boutique Drew Lewis. Five male models and one female model will work the runway while Berlin’s DJ Scorpio provides beats for the entire night. Event organizer and Fenuxe 50 member Chris Coleman’s original vision for INDULGE was to give another exciting option to what’s out there for gay Atlanta nightlife on Thursday nights. “The whole premise of my business is not to take business away from what’s already here and established, but to add something different,” he says.

stars took their shirts off, which doesn’t sound crazy for Blake’s, but for The W it’s very crazy.” On the flipside, Coleman counts unannounced visits by celebrities as a welcome surprise. Real Housewives star Kim Zolciak has swung by, and Vampire Diaries actress and singer Kat Graham brought fellow castmembers one night. Upcoming themes on the INDULGE calendar include a National Flag Football League of Atlanta league drive with raffles and giveaways, a Britney Spears CD release party, a Wonder World night with giveaways and several artist exhibitions. The calendar is filling up for nightlife options this season, so leave the bottle of wine corked and go indulge in all the evening’s events, making us glad to call Atlanta home.

Atlanta’s Superb Appeal ARCHITECT AND INTERIOR designer John Gidding is a familiar (and damn pretty) face to most gay Atlantans. You might have seen the openly gay, former Wilhelmina model after he moved here from New York in 2008 to star on the Atlanta versions of HGTV’s Designed To Sell and (later) Curb Appeal: The Block. He also opened a new location of his firm John Gidding Design in the Old Fourth Ward. Gidding is now based in San Francisco filming a new installment of Curb Appeal: The Block, which premieres in April. But you’ll still see his smiling face around A-town as he attends to his firm’s local projects. Although he was anxious before moving here because of his unfamiliarity with the South, his fears were quickly extinguished. “I love Atlanta,” he tells Fenuxe. “It turned out to be a wonderful experience for me.” A large part of that praise is due to our food scene, with Parish and Rathbun’s high on his list of frequented spots. But food isn’t Gidding’s main business and passion. It’s architecture and interior design, of which he has no shortage of opinions when it comes to Atlanta. One Georgia Center at the corner of West Peachtree and North Avenue is a fave. “I love

26 FENUXE.COM

this building because first of all, it’s all clad in white marble,” he says. “It’s a beautiful example of an international style of architecture.” AT&T Midtown Center doesn’t get off as easy. “It looks like Legos or something.” But he gives high marks to Studioplex in the Old Fourth Ward – fitting, seeing as it was home base for his design firm. “Studioplex is such a great example of taking what’s already there and this sort of urban infill and being able to use this new loft space,” Gidding gushes. “I truly love it, it’s one of my favorites.” So if you see a sexy guy with dark features somewhere around town eyeing a house or other building, it might just be HGTV’s newest star plotting his next project.

You might have noticed David Furnish’s passionate editorial about the Greater Than AIDS campaign published in our Spring Fashion issue. It is only the first in a long line of vital messages you’ll see and hear over the next several months. And Fenuxe is a proud partner of the campaign. Greater Than AIDS is a new national movement to address the issue of HIV/AIDS in our country. The campaign has a two-pronged goal – to increase knowledge and understanding about the disease and to confront the stigma surrounding it. This is being done through a national media campaign and targeted community outreach.

Nowhere is that outreach needed more than in Atlanta. You’ve seen the studies and statistics. The Georgia Department of Health has been influential in securing the presence of Greater Than AIDS here. So keep an eye out in the coming months as Fenuxe, Here Media and Logo Television, in partnership with Greater Than AIDS, bring you relevant, topical and crucial information about the fight. Be informed. Be safe. Be Greater Than AIDS.

LIVING THE LIFE

BANFF B.T. Tidwell

WHILE THE WEATHER in Atlanta is flirting with springtime, there are still several months of ski weather to be enjoyed north of the border. Banff is one of Canada’s premier resorts for winter sports – and home to a majestic architectural wonder to explore for the week. Fly into wondrous Calgary, the first Canadian city to host the Winter Olympic Games. Then settle back in your seat and watch the natural beauty of the snow covered Canadian Rockies unfurl outside the bus window. The Fairmont Banff Springs awaits, providing a warm welcome at the end of your journey. Styled after a Scottish Baronial Castle, the Fairmont is clearly a work of art – William and Kate are reportedly even considering it for their royal honeymoon. The world-renowned hotel offers stunning vistas of the Canadian Rockies and the blanket of green valley below. The views inside are even more impressive, highlighted by the award-winning Willow Stream Spa. Take a soak with your partner in the spa’s serene indoor European mineral pool or in the outdoor whirlpool surrounded by the pristine mountains and grand, ancient glaciers. You’ll both get the energy and balance you’ve been striving for after enduring the stresses of Atlanta city life. Put that recharge to use by exploring Banff’s many outdoor activities. The Fairmont offers on-site ice skating and curling, as well as front door service to all three Banff ski retreats.

28 FENUXE.COM

The ski areas offer every possible range of skiing from beginner to world-class downhill. There is also snow boarding, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing and sleigh rides. For the less athletic, there are nature walks, museums, art galleries, cultural events and shopping. While there are no gay clubs in Banff, it is a notably cosmopolitan and international community. Visitors will find comfort in the resort’s laid back, gay friendly vibe. Refresh yourself with a meal in the Fairmont’s gourmet restaurant then retire to your balcony for a star studded spectacle in the night sky. With glorious architectural beauty surrounding you and unforgettable activities ahead, there is plenty of time to plan a trip north of the border for some Canook hospitality and winter wonderland fun.

YOU ARE AT a bar, wedding, funeral, drag charity event or your best friend’s Botox party and the one common edible thread is cheese. But what do we really know about our friend fromage? I decided to go get some answers on this yummy dairy product. Atlanta cheese guru Toni Ross Weir came to the rescue. Toni is also board chair of Positive Impact and volunteers with Hero for Children, both non-profit organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life for folks infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Toni, what’s the one thing most folks don’t know about cheese?

Where would you send folks to buy good cheese?

The variety. There are so many flavors and textures. Most people only know about five types and don’t explore. They tend not to go out of their comfort zone. I highly suggest chatting with your cheese monger and asking them to give you a taste.

Definitely Alon’s Bakery and Market. boast over 120 varieties of cheeses.

Is there a good Southern cheese? The South is on the rise with its cheese production and the diversity. There is national recognition on the quality. One that comes to mind is Sweet Grass Dairy with its Green Hill pasteurized, soft-ripened, cow’s milk cheese. It’s incredible. And from Alabama, Belle Chevre is another among the greats. What’s the one cheese to have in your house in case guests drop by? Definitely something with wide appeal and extended shelf life — like good cheddar. Cheddar is not boring. There are some excellent choices like Montgomery Cheddar or one of my favorites, Cabot Clothbound Aged Cheddar.

“Gay men are bright and funny and they’ve been my mainstay and my good friends all my life.”

JOAN RIVERS The iconic Joan Rivers

first realized she connected with gay audiences when she was performing standup in Greenwich Village clubs in the early 60s. “They just got it first,” she tells Fenuxe. That support kick-started a 50-year career full of bestselling comedy albums and books, writing and performing on some of the most successful television shows in history, giving hilariously uncensored fashion critiques and being one of the most in-demand standup comedians in the world. Now she’s bringing her wicked wit to the Atlanta stage with a one-woman show March 25 at Atlanta Symphony Hall. Fenuxe spoke to Ms. Rivers during a break from filming spots for her successful jewelry line featured on QVC. That familiar raspy but sweet New York voice rang out to talk about her new reality show with daughter Melissa, her little-known lesbian connection to Barbra Streisand and what motivates her to keep performing after all these years. Fenuxe: So tell me about the reality show, Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best. You’ve moved in with Melissa, correct? Rivers: That’s been picked up already for next year and it’s so much fun. It all started when I did a play in California a few years ago. I was living at Melissa’s house and when I left, she said, “Ya know, it’s been so wonderful having you in the same city. It’s like being a family again.” Because once people move out and get married, family turns into a very different thing. So I said, “I’m moving back, I’m coming back to California.” And we’ve got Fashion Police [on E!] which Melissa produces and I’m in. And we said this was the perfect opportunity, and somebody said it’s also the perfect opportunity for a reality show. And that’s how it all started. Fenuxe: And I hear there’s been a bit of drama?

Rivers: Ohh a lot of drama. A lot of laughs, a lot of drama. Fenuxe: I want to go back a ways now. Is it true one of your first gigs was in a play called Driftwood where you played a lesbian with a crush on a character played by Barbra Streisand? Rivers: I was her lover, not a crush! It was such a bad play [laughs]. They couldn’t find an actor to play it so I said, “Make them lesbian lovers.” And that’s what they did. I have pictures of us which is just hilarious. She was still in high school then. You talk about young! We still see each other to this day and we both remember it and laugh about it, because it was her first thing and my first thing. Fenuxe: So when did you first realize you had a gay following? Rivers: Very early on. I would find when FENUXE.COM

I worked in little clubs in the Village, in Greenwich Village, that a lot of the returnees and the ones who thought I was the funniest were the gay guys. They just got it first! And it was wonderful. And it’s stayed with me all my life, which I’m very lucky about. And it’s funny because somebody wrote on my Twitter “You’re homophobic.” And I must have gotten 6,000 replies within two hours [laughs]. I thought, “Are you [expletive] crazy?” Fenuxe: [laughs] Wait what led them to think that? Rivers: I don’t know! We were trying to figure out what I possibly said that got this one person in a million to say that. But the joke was, even before I had read it, the response was, “Are you [expletive] crazy? What, are you nuts? Are you out of your mind?!” And by the time I saw it, we were asking what could have possibly...of all the people? You moron. I adore gay men. I think they’re bright and they’re funny and they’ve been my mainstay and my good friends all my life. Melissa’s godfather [is gay], and on and on and on... Fenuxe: So about the fashion critiques, which you’re legendary for, is there a worst dressed gay celebrity right now? Rivers: No it’s usually the gay ones that look the best. You know what I mean, because they enjoy the clothing. And they all put on a dinner jacket and look beautiful, and get that it’s wonderful to have studs with it, that it’s great to have cufflinks, all that. It’s beautiful and wonderful. So there are very few gay badly dressed celebrities. Now...badly dressed lesbians is another story. But again that goes back to, if you’re not a lipstick lesbian you don’t give a damn about clothes that much. Fenuxe: So the show is coming up March 25th in Atlanta... Rivers: I love Atlanta. Well I love the whole south. I think it’s just beautiful and warm and I love the formality and I love the way the women still dress. There’s a lot more manners still in the south. Whatever manners are left, they’re in the south. Fenuxe: Do you ever take a break from working? Rivers: Yeah, my schedule is really busy but I do take time off. I go off with my daughter and my grandson on holidays. And I do theater. I make sure I get to see theater at least twice a week in

New York. I love doing things like that. And I love the work! What could be nicer than when you think of something funny to say, get up in front of a whole bunch of people, a lot of them gay [laughs], you know they’re going to get it. And do jokes, and they get it and it’s wonderful! Everyone’s laughing. Fenuxe: After 50 years of performing, what is it that keeps you coming back for more? Rivers: Oh, the energy. When you wake up in the morning and you think, “Gee I think this is a funny idea.” And then you get up in front of a live audience at night and you go, “Wow. They get it too!” And that’s just glorious. Fenuxe: Your name came up the other night. The director and playwright Del Shores was in town doing a one-man show and he did an off-color joke and the audience groaned. He stopped and said, “Hey this is nothing. You should see a Joan Rivers show.” Rivers: Well you should check out any show. Let’s start with Dane Clark, whatever his stupid name is. Dane Cook. Let’s go on to Kathy Griffin, let’s go on to me, let’s go on to Chris Rock. I mean that’s what comedy is now. Comedy is rough. Life is rough and comedy is rough. And if you get upset, don’t come and see my show. Fenuxe: Well if you get a chance to get out in Atlanta there is a club called Swinging Richards frequented by entertainer Leslie Jordan when he’s in town performing. I’m sure you would be very welcomed there. It’s a gay strip club. Rivers: Oh that’s funny. What goes on there? Are they performing or just dancing and music and everything? Fenuxe: Dancing and music and lap dances. The whole shebang. Rivers: Oh Slinging Richards? Okay if we have strength after the show. My whole little group, everyone is so damn tired. You see friends and they go, “Okay who wants to go out?” and you go, “Are you kidding? Home we go.” Fenuxe: We’re looking forward to the show! Rivers: I’m looking forward to coming there and Slinging Richards or whatever it’s called, I’m going to try to find out about it. Thank you so much! TAURUS A good way to combine two of your favorite past times is to look carefully at movie set designs for ideas for updating your style decor.

GEMINI Take down those curtains and give them a wash. Or better yet, give them away and let the sun shine in your life again.

CANCER

SAGITTARIUS

LEO

Be aware that people notice what you buy when out shopping. They’re not stalking. They’re just curious about what the attractive guys find purchase-worthy.

Show some restraint when planting flowers for the garden. A cold snap will make things shrink, shrivel up and die. And we ALL hate when that happens.

VIRGO

CAPRICORN

You’re sizzling like the “in” colors for spring…vibrant orange and hot pink!

Like shrimp on the barbie, life is always better with extra hot sauce. Just remember to balance with a smidgen of sweet.

LIBRA You know all that furniture ( junk) you got from your parents? Well, they didn’t want it anymore and neither should you. Time to develop your own style.

SCORPIO Boost your indoor plants with some extra food before returning them to the patio this spring. That goes for you and energy drinks, and your social life too.

Use your technology savvy to locate fresh online themes for the spring, whether it’s home decor, gardening, or love…or PrideMed.Fenuxe_HalfPage_Mssg:Layout 1 11/18/10 7:22 PM Page 1 combinations of the above.

AQUARIUS Someone you work with is asking your opinion on matters of the home and hearth. What he’s really aiming for is home and heart.

PISCES Sometimes it’s better to whisper how you’re feeling – think warm spring breeze through airy window sheers.

Dear Castleberry, Dear Mary, I’ve been seeing this great guy. He’s handsome, he’s smart, he’s funny. But his place is a pigsty. He lives like a straight guy. He’s not taking my subtle hints about cleaning up and I’m running out of excuses to stay at my place. What do I do with this filthy catch? Signed,

Clean In Castleberry Hill

I trust people who claim to have tiger blood and Adonis DNA more than I trust people with dirty apartments. I mean sure, everyone has a messy day or week or something when they’re just overloaded, but if the pigsty status lasts for a month or more, you need to calmly walk away...and toss him a Swiffer duster or something on your way out for God’s sake. A dirty apartment says to me, “I’m barely holding it together, and cleaning my apartment would be just enough to push me over the edge, causing me to let everything go – my job, my body, my Debbie Gibson collection, etc.” When that day comes, you do not want to be there, my friend. I say this from personal experience. I was that total slob. It was indicative of a larger problem. The chaos in my apartment was directly related to the chaos in my life. I could keep that crazy under wraps most of the time, but eventually, it’s going to start oozing out and no one should have to deal with it but the crazy himself. Or you could, you know, get him a freaking maid.
