What A Long, Strange Trip It’s Been

LETTER TO THE YEAR 2064

Editor’s Note: This special issue of Fenuxe will be preserved in a time capsule on the island of Maui, HI which will be opened in the year 2064.

H

ere is a riddle for you. What do Superman, Snow White, and Richard Rhodes have in common? All are legends in their own eyes? Perhaps. All are fantastic? Perhaps -- if by “fantastic” you mean (as the dictionary defines the word) “bizarre”, “strange” “unreal”, “uncanny”, “eccentric in behavior or appearance”

GIVE UP? All first appeared to the world in 1937, and are all still with us. For many years I was somewhat naïve, with no real sense of who I was as a person, let alone a sexual person. After all, I was born in 1937. Reflecting back on those days, the world has changed in monumental ways. As a child and young adult, I had no role models for how to be gay. There were no resources, as people just didn’t talk about it. Many of us had to do the journey of self-discovery completely on our own. We had no Internet, and the images of gays and lesbians in books, newspapers, on the radio and television were almost always very negative. Our community lived in the shadows of society. Because of this my journey to self-acceptance took a bit longer than most.

My generation of LGBT people lived through decades of discrimination, with homosexuality labeled as a crime or deemed a mental illness. We were not allowed to congregate in public without fear of harassment and arrest. We could not serve openly in the military or hold a civil service position. In fact, many of us felt forced to marry members of the opposite sex in order to hide our true identities. With homosexuality so much more accepted now, it’s hard to realize what we went through. The first 36 years of my life I was considered to have a mental illness. In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder. In 2014 there are many who would say I am still mentally ill.

Quoting my personal hero Georgia Rep. John Lewis “ You cannot become bitter or hostile. You have to keep the faith and keep your eyes on the prize. This is not a struggle of a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime.” By the year 2064, my hopes and expectations are that being LGBT will no longer be an issue around the world. Maybe you will even wonder why , in 2014, people made such a big deal out of identifying as LGBT. I hope that the United State of America will have elected an LGBT President and that AIDS will be a curable disease. Because I live in Georgia, I truly hope that our State is not the last state to recognize Same Sex Marriage. As of this writing, only time will tell. As I have grown older, I have realized that most issues are not black and white or good and bad. Most issues fall into the many shades of gray. Always try to do the right thing by following your heart. Make it your life’s work to lift up the voices of the small or weak in our society so that they too feel kindest, love, and compassion. If we, as a society can achieve that goal, then we will have healed the world. Richard Rhodes Brief History:

Richard Rhodes

1962 - I was forced to flee my home in Tampa FL, because I was under investigation by “The John’s Committee”. The Florida Legislative Investigation Committee (also known as the Johns Committee) was established by the Florida Legislature in 1956, during the era of the Second Red Scare and the Lavender Scare. Like the more famous anti-Communist investigative committees of the McCarthy period in the United States Congress, the Florida committee undertook a wide-ranging investigation of potentially subversive activities by academics, civil rights groups, and suspected communist organizations, and also attempted to eliminate homosexuals from state government and public education. 1972 - Moved to Atlanta, GA

1988 - The first Openly Gay Man Elected to be a delegate to the National Democratic Convention. 1988 - Gil Roberson and I were the first openly gay men to run for the Georgia House of Representative. (We both lost) 1992 - Elected the first openly Chair of the DeKalb County Democratic Party 1992 - Received the most votes in DeKalb County Democratic Party to the 1992 National Democratic Convention. 2012 - Lifetime Achievement Award from the Atlanta Gay Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. 2012 - Fenuxe 50 Award - The 50 most outstanding individuals of our community 2014 - Elected President, Atlanta Prime Timers Goals for 2015 - Adoption of an LGBT non discrimination clause in my City of Brookhaven, GA.

Tell me about all the work you have done for our community. Oh, I have done a lot of different things. I started at Open Hand around 25 years ago. This holiday season, kiss the dreary and dreadfully cold weather in Atlanta goodbye and say hello to the magic of Maui. Maui, Hawaii’s second-largest island, is more beautiful and majestic than words can express. That’s why the local saying is “Maui no ka oi” - “Maui is the best!” It has everything from breathtaking beaches and a charming city center to wild, undiscovered wilderness filled with endless waterfalls, rainbows, and mysterious black lava flows. It’s here, on the romantic isle of Maui where an unforgettable vacation awaits.

A

lthough Hawaii is part of the United States, it’s worlds away from Atlanta. Even though it’s a 10 hour flight to Honolulu and a short 40 min connecting flight to Maui, both flights were pleasantly comfortable and seemed much shorter than they were. I highly recommend flying Delta and connecting to Maui on Hawaiian Air and, if you can, fly business class - it’s well worth it. From the moment I stepped off the plane, I knew I had stepped into paradise. The weather and humidity were perfect and I before I took a taxi (yes, a taxi - they don’t yet have Uber) I took the time to lean my head back, close my eyes, and soak in the warm and beautiful sunshine. My boyfriend and I had booked a stay at Maui Sunseeker, Hawaii’s only LGBT resort, and while on our way, we decided to stop at a charming outdoor farmer’s market filled with fresh pineapples, papayas, mangos, cold coconuts, guava, limes, and passionfruit. The fruit was incredibly fresh and while sipping juice out of a cold coconut, I realized we were off to a fantastic start to our vacation. We arrived at the resort and were greeted by Joe, one of the cute guys on staff at Maui Sunseeker, who showed us around the lush, clothing-optional, garden/pool area and to our room with a gorgeous view. After unpacking, we decided to go to Safeway (their version of Kroger) to get supplies and drinks for the week. In addition to cheap food, it’s a great place to buy Hawaiian gifts for everyone on your list as well as snorkels, flippers, sandcastle supplies. Armed with food, drinks, and snorkels, we were off to Ka’anapali Beach - one of the best places to go snorkeling in the world. FENUXE.COM : 33

Ka’anapali Beach The three-mile stretch of beach in west Maui called Ka’anapali is a beautiful area rich with history, wildlife and culture that is situated only 20 min from Maui Sunseeker. We went to Black Rock (Pu’u Keka’a) first because it’s a sacred location in Hawaiian mythology, where souls of the dead leapt from the human to the spiritual realm and it’s a great place to swim with the sea turtles. I dove right into the warm water and was blown away with how beautiful it was. I felt like I was in “Finding Nemo” because there were things there that I had never seen before - little spiny creatures of all shapes and colors, brilliant red, yellow, green, and rainbow-colored fish, strange looking eel creatures, and the most magnificent experience of all - swimming alongside huge sea turtles! We snorkeled until just before the sunset and while we were exiting the water we were greeted by a beautiful, scantilyclad, hawaiian native boy who was holding a torch and climbed up on the rocks to light a series of other torches that stretched out into the sea. Every night, he climbs these rocks to pay homage to his ancestors and it was quite fun to watch him light each torch juxtaposed against our first incredible pink and purple Maui sunset. After the sun said goodbye, we walked to the southern part of Ka’anapali to the open-air mall called Whalers Village, which is home to dozens of shops and really great restaurants. We dined that evening at the Hula Grill which was relatively inexpensive and very good. It was cool because it’s right on the beach (in fact the floor is sand) and they have very good musicians and hula dancers to get you into the Hawaiian spirit.

Little Beach The next day we decided to go to Little Beach (a beautiful, hidden, clothing-optional cove) because we heard that there is a drum circle with fire dancers that happens every Sunday evening. It’s about 10 min from Maui Sunseeker Resort and you do have to walk all the way down Big Beach and through a small mountain overpass - but, trust me, it’s well worth it. Gay guys and gals hang out on the right-hand side of the beach, while your hard-core nudists and curious tourists stay more on the left-hand side of the beach and eye candy abounds! We had a blast swimming in the teal waves and exploring the nearby hiking trails. As evening approached the first conga drums and dancers started. By nightfall, the entire valley was alive with multiple drummers, dancers, and fire breathers.

It’s one of the best spots in all of Maui and a must-see on your list while you’re here. Just be mindful that the parking lot does close around 7pm so you’ll need to move your car before then or just park on the street.

Haleakala Crater We woke up super early the next day because we wanted to hit the huge Haleakala Crater and the road to Hana. Haleakala Crater, the peak of the East Maui volcano, rises an impressive 10,023 feet above sea level. Make sure to bring a light jacket, because it’s cold once you get all the way to the top. You may also want to travel more slowly up the mountain than we did because the air is quite thin and it can be difficult to breathe. It took us about an hour and a half to get all the way to the top and from the top you can view the entire island of Maui and you can even see other islands in the Hawaiian island chain. It’s the largest dormant volcano in the world and it’s also home to more endangered species of plants and animals than any other U.S. National Park. I recommend you watch the sunrise or watch the sunset and starry night sky from atop the peak as it was so beautiful I was moved to tears.

The Road To Hana After conquering the crater, we decided to drive the beautiful and treacherous 55-mile stretch known as the Road to Hana. If you are driving, please be carful on these windy and small roads and keep in mind that all of the bridges are one lane only - be prepared to yield to oncoming traffic. Hana is located on the east side of the Island and is known for it’s lush, wild and untouched landscapes. On the trip, you’ll pass by bamboo forests, cruise by towering cliffs and spot fruit trees and flowers you are not found anywhere else in the world. Maui Sunseeker Resort has a really cool CD that has great music and narrates your way to Hana, letting you know where to stop to see all of the beautiful waterfalls. While some of the majestic waterfalls are tucked away deep in the jungle and are only accessible by foot, others can be seen right from the road. I also recommend stopping at the famous black sand beaches that truly out of this world. We had a great time playing in their huge, deep blue waves and exploring the nearby small caves. Whale Watching Maui is also a paradise for Humpback whales as every December through April they migrate from the frigid waters of Alaska to these warm Pacific waves to mate and give birth. These 40-ton creatures favor the warm Auau Channel between Maui and Lanai because it’s secluded. Be sure to book a dinner or sunset cruise to see these enchanting and colossal animals up close and personal.

I have to say that out of all of my travels around the world, Maui is the most beautiful place I have ever been. From the breathtaking beaches and amazing wildlife to the top of the world’s largest dormant volcano and everything in between - Maui simply is a magical place. But, like every good magic trick, you’ll have to see it for yourself to believe it.

OPINION

Apps: What R U N2? by Dustin Shrader

A few issues ago, I tiptoed in the world of online dating by talking to guys from around the city about their own personal awkward first date encounters. One or two had some incredibly funny, creepy and all around weird experiences derived from using a gay dating app. Yes, we men are all predictable. And it is blatantly obvious in the new age of online dating. Naturally, men have a higher sexdrive than women. So, is it shocking that gay dating apps have blown up over the past few years? No, not really. Don’t misunderstand, there is absolutely nothing wrong with using these apps for casual fun among consenting adults. As I browsed through several app choices, I began to notice the reasons behind the popularity and the reasons for kicking it old school when it comes to online dating. Pro: Thousands to millions of gay men have tried online dating. With those numbers the potentiality of finding a man who enjoys sucking toes more than you do are astronomical. Con: Gay dating apps are overpopulated. The network of gay men is inexhaustible and can be overwhelming for us shy, quiet types. Pro: According to statistics, one out of five gay men start a relationship online. This budding romance can be endeavored through numerous channels i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Tinder, Grindr etc. For all the failures there are just as many if not more numerous success stories. Con: The downside to finding your dream quarterback to take to the sock-hop is that people lie. Say what!? Gay men lie?

Hell yeah they do. Not all, but quite a few tend to lie about their age, weight, height, income and just about anything else one could imagine. These apps allow some men to live in a fantasy. Be cautious. Pro: With so many options, you can meet many men from all walks of life. It is supremely convenient to find someone who shares in your common interests like why Queen Bey rules the world. Flawless baby. Con: Yet, chatting up all these men can be as addicting as porn. You may find yourself constantly looking for the next pretty face to message or swap pics. It is never-ending. I’m shocked anyone ventures outside anymore. Pro: The apps are available 24 hours a day. Spank bank material is only a thumb touch away. Con: Navigating these apps can also feel like a full-time job and dude don’t you already have one? Stay organized. Pro: The apps are idiot-proof and allow for filters to narrow down your search of a potential soul mate. Con: The only problem with these filters is that we as gay men are too picky. You run the risk of losing out on a promising date or the gift of everlasting friendship all because your search is too narrow.

All in all, gay dating apps can be fun. I have met quite a few strangers that are now some of my closest friends. It didn’t happen immediately. I did have to dig through and suffer the relentless “You looking?, Pic for pic?, Top or bottom?” questions. Final conclusions, some men are only interested in what’s going on down south, while others are interested in what’s going on up north. If you’re up for the challenge, online dating can be worth it. However, keep in mind online dating eventually has to move offline. Otherwise, what’s the point?

Three’s Company?

HBO recently unveiled the new season two teaser for its hit show Looking. And from the teaser it looks to me like things are about to get even sexier. The thirty-second teaser flips from close-up to close-up revolving around the cast individually, amidst overhead techno-color club lights. As the clip comes to a close, Patrick ( Jonathan Groff) faces off against his two very alluring, very sexy love interests, Richie (Raul Castillo) and Kevin (Russell Tovey). Taking a wild guess but it looks like Patrick has quite the delicious choice to make. Hey, Patrick why choose? You know what they say; three is a party. Looking’s second season is set to premiere January 2015.

Princesses Are Tough Too

Gay men are not the only ones to face criticism. Gorgeous movie stars share their brunt of the unwarranted bullying. Into the Woods actress Anna Kendrick elaborated on this fact in December’s issue of Marie Claire. The 29-year-old actress tells the mag that she gets, “Am I the only one who doesn’t think that Anna Kendrick is pretty?” all the time. Good-naturedly she replies, “No, you’re not the only one. All the boys in my high school agree with you.” Say what!? The actress is undeniably gorgeous. However, she doesn’t let the negative get her down. She only uses it to motivate her performances. Further elaborating, Kendrick says she “likes playing roles that aren’t always picture perfect.” Similar to her character, “I think it’s this incredibly brave story. She’s neglected and abused her entire life. She finally gets love and it’s not the kind of love she was looking for, and she stands up for herself.” As does Kendrick, you go girl! 42: November 20, 2014

A Secret Seller

Andy Cohen is about to become a New York Times bestselling author for the second time! The TV host and pop culture enthusiast stopped by the Today Show to discuss his new literary venture as well as a few other tidbits all of us celebrity-loving peeps will be sure to enjoy. Described as part “Andy Warhol Diaries” and part “Bridgett Jones’s Diary,” “The Andy Cohen Diaries” takes the reader behind the scenes of his hit show, allowing a better understanding of Andy’s lifestyle and what exactly makes the gay star tick. During the Today interview, Andy revealed the tipsiest guests he’s ever had on his show (Ricki Lake and Rosie Perez), while professing his “totally not creepy” guy crush on Today host Matt Lauer. “The Andy Cohen Diaries” is on shelves now.

Bathtub Beats

Okay everyone, I have found your next video to obsess over! Souful-crooner Sam Smith shared an absolutely adorable #tbt video on Instagram. In the nostalgic video, Sam is not only seen as a 4-year-old but he is also rapping in the bathtub! Dude was busting a rhyme and very well too. This clip justly solidifies that Sam is multitalented. Perhaps, some future rap collaborations will be released soon. Until then, I guess we will have to continue swooning over Smith’s debut solo-album, as well as this new-found treasure. Sam is also slated to record the theme song for the upcoming James Bond movie. I am positively shaken and stirred to hear that voice during the next super-spy thriller.
