INTERVIEW BY DANIEL LYONS

What Is It Like to Be Cured of HIV?

A Conversation With Timony Ray Brown

When Timothy Ray Brown underwent a bone marrow transplant in Berlin, Germany during the winter of 2007, he was unaware of the historical significance that the surgery would later have. He hoped that the grueling procedure would free him from Leukemia, and he knew there was an unlikely chance that he could also be rid of HIV. Eight years later, Brown remains free from Leukemia and is still the only person on the planet to be cured of HIV. I met with Brown, and together we discussed the significance that this experience has had on him personally, his newfound role as a leader, and his hopes for impacting the world. Being the only person in the world to ever be cured of HIV/AIDS must be quite an experience. And it seems it has launched you into the role of a leader and an activist. I’m curious to know where the story begins and if you have always considered yourself an activist. I was an activist in ACT-UP in 1989 and 90 before I left the United States. I wanted to study in Berlin, which is what lead me there. Then, I tested positive for HIV in 1995. I had a partner at the time, who I met in Berlin and eventually moved to Barcelona with, and he told me that he didn’t want to know his status. He preferred not to know if he was HIV positive or negative. Its important to remember that even in 1995, testing positive was still considered a death 20: November 20, 2015

sentence. There wasn’t anything available for treatment except for AZT and a couple of others. Were you recommended to take AZT at that time? Yes, my doctor recommended it, but I really didn’t want to do it because of all the known side effects, and perhaps even more so for the unknown side effects. But, since it was the only treatment available, I agreed to try a low dose. And luckily the next year protease inhibitors and then the drug cocktail combinations came out and I was able to switch my treatment to those. I did well for the next 11 years, and took a number of different HIV cocktail treatment regimens. Around 2006 I returned to the US for a friend’s gay wedding, and I remember feeling extremely fatigued. When I got back to Berlin it continued to get worse. I told my boyfriend, who took me to a doctor who diagnosed me with anemia. They started doing these blood transfusions but they didn’t really help, so I was sent to an oncologist. The oncologist did a bone marrow autopsy and discovered that I had Leukemia. Needless to say, I was shocked. I knew it was deadly and needed to get treated immediately so we discussed where I should go, & that’s when I was introduced to Dr. Gero Huetter who, little did I know at that point, would became an integral part of my life & cure.

I read about your story a few years ago, but I was recently surprised to find out that you were cured as far as 8 years back. What has happened since then? At first I was just basically recovering. And my former partner at the time, who I love dearly, strongly suggested that I take as much time as I needed to recover before even thinking of going public. But at some point I really began to feel the weight of being the only person in the world to be cured of HIV. I felt like I was in this very exclusive club, and I desperately wanted other people to join! I decided to release my name and story to the public. It began with a German magazine called Stern who ran the initial story. I didn’t want to be interviewed again for 6 months, and the next one was with POZ magazine in the US & it began to snowball from there. At what point did this coverage shift your focus toward activism? I had been doing some appearances and speeches since the first story ran. I met with the founders of the World AIDS Institute and together we decided to hold a press conference at the 19th International AIDS Conference in Washington, DC in 2012, where I would announce my interest in starting a foundation or a coalition in support of the effort to find a cure for AIDS. That’s really where it began because many of the international folks had never heard my story. Remember, I only came out as

the Berlin Patient on December 8, 2010, so about a year and a half earlier. Many had never even heard that someone was cured. When we did the press conference, it was off-site, and about an hour before we had to double the size of the room to accommodate all of the media outlets from around the world. I think that’s when people began to see me as a potential leader. From there we began holding meetings and the idea of a Cure for AIDS Coalition really began to take flight. Then from 2012 you have been searching for ideal partnerships to move this forward. Can you tell me a little about how the search for partnerships has gone, and how you arrived at the Research Foundation to Cure AIDS? To be truthful, as it relates to the Research Foundation to Cure AIDS, we were actually somewhat skeptical. You know, I have a pretty good bullshit meter and when looking into Dr. Shekdar’s biotech called Chromocell, it was puzzling because they have done amazing work on things like developing artificial tastes, and so I wasn’t too sure how this would pan out as it relates to a cure for HIV. And as you can imagine, it was quite a process to find the right kinds of organizations to partner with as it relates to our mission. It took from mid October of last year until now to gain the level of comfort that we’ve reached with the Research Foundation to Cure AIDS. We helped launch their organization in New York City in May of this year and we are thrilled with the opportunities of our working together. But in the end, the fact that he wants to build a coalition of both medical researchers and social scientists in the pursuit of a cure is exactly what we were looking for in a partner. I understand that the long-term goal is to roll out a cure for HIV, but what else does the organization, the Cure for AIDS Coalition, seek to accomplish in the more immediate future? Our main goal is to foster an environment of collaboration, & to stop the territoriality that we have witnessed happening over the past few years within the scientific, medical and AIDS community on the road to a cure for AIDS. Specifically, at the NIH cure meeting late last year, we officially launched the Cure Report, which is an information website and online database where people can go to if they want to learn more about AIDS cure research that is being conducted. We’ve listed all the HIV cure related studies by state and by country. It also acts as a discussion forum for prevention, treatment and the vaccine trials. Our overall mission is to focus on HIV cure awareness, education and support for full funding for HIV cure research. In essence we wanted to create a voice for a cure. The other thing we would like to kick off soon, is a CCR5 Delta 32 registry. Which is the genetic mutation that led to my being cured. In essence, my doctor who cured me, Dr. Gero Huetter, started the process to create a CCR5 registry it in Germany, and we would like to bring it to the United States and make it accessible to all HIV cure researchers around the world. It would also be a way for patients to participate in the process to find a cure for AIDS. Cure researchers are telling us that they are excited about our CCR5 registry idea, because accessing that kind of information has been a real barrier for some of the cure research moving forward. The other thing we would like to kick off is the first International Cure AIDS Day to help get out the word that a cure for HIV is possible and gather more support for the global effort. Those are the three main things we are working on right now. But it is just the beginning as it relates to our work under the Cure for AIDS Coalition. INTERVIEW

America’s First Transgender Pop Group

Secret Girls

BY PETER GARNET

How did the idea for the Secret Girls start and get to where you are today? Nikki Exotika founded the Secret Girls about 10years ago back in 2006; she had a vision of creating a Trans Female Pop Group almost like the Spice Girls but of different races. Throughout the years she casted many different members to the girl group but couldn’t find the right chemistry so in 2013 she decided to move to L.A. to start a new chapter of her life. She had a Secret Girls casting call through social media and found a Filipina girl named Jazlene Ban from Huntington Beach. At the same time, Raquel Starr approached Nikki at a TRANS party and asked if she could be considered to be a part of the Secret Girls. Nikki gave her the spot as the newest Latina member to join the group. Later, some unfortunate events caused Nikki to move back to the east coast. There, someone told Nikki to check out Eleet Lucheonnie on YouTube and she where she saw a video and was very impressed by her vocal range, unique style and signature green hair. Finally the girls were ready to start

working together , they recorded music in the studio shot a sizzle reel, rehearsed many hours, hosted some events and performed live during NYC PRIDE 2015.

rehearsals to prepare for their “Secret Girls” Promo tour which brings us to now, the “Secret Girls” are touring the country, you can keep up with the girls on the web on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

Nikki was aware that Raquel had another TRANS related project back in LA, but never realized it would interfere with Raquel staying part of the “Secret Girls”. Raquel was given an ultimatum to make a decision on which project she would choose and ultimately she chose the dance project in LA. The “Secret Girls” were very upset over this but respected her decision and supported Raquel on her journey

What’s ahead for the group?

This left the girls again searching for another member, so Nikki took to social media again and started searching for talented TRANS music artists. Thats where she came across Alissah Brooks from Atlanta, and that’s when magic happened, the chemistry was just right, so Alissah flew to NYC to meet Nikki & Eleet and Jazlene flew in from California. One week later the girls recorded 5 songs, shot a music video, had 2 photo shoots, and had 20-hour dance

Nikki will be adding a 5th member in the near future, preferably of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean descent. The group really wants to cross over into the mainstream world of pop music, and who knows? Possibly find a record label and big name producer that is willing to work with them and give them a chance, someone who believes in their vision as much as they do! The girls will be auditioning for this season of America’s Got Talent, to show the world who they are, a talented group of beautiful women who happen to be transgender. You can find more information about Secret Girls on their website: Secretgirlsworld.com and if you happen to be in the Ft. Lauderdale area on November 20th, you can check them out LIVE at the Manor. Stay tuned to FENUXE for updates on their Atlanta appearance!

Hey Girl Hey! Holler Poodles! I love this time of year so much!! The weather is getting colder, the leaves are falling and I’m snuggled up with a sweet pussy (her choice, not mine!) Girls, you know Thanksgiving is all about family and food. But damn, I got some relatives… Well, let’s just say they’re more than a little f**ked up! Nana Split Pitts, my grandmother on my neighbor’s side is just a damn fool. Ain’t got a lick of shame and is proud of her body!! Unbeknownst to most of the locals, Nana was born with a birth defect -- a third and fourth nipple and a fifth of Jack Daniels. As Nana entered puberty at 7, her breasts were size double DD’s and she was very popular with both boys and local dairy moms. By the age of 11 her boobs were hanging down by her hips and by 15 they kept falling in her coochie. She refused to wear a bra cause she said folding her titties over on themselves was uncomfortable. Unfortunately, she lost her teeth somewhere along the way. But I look back with fond memories of each Thanksgiving. We’d have a great meal, then Eustice (my not so great uncle/brother and cousin once removed by security) and Nana would get drunk on Jack and cola and fall out. Nana would be snoring and farting (smelled like old cheese and rotten eggs were gonna make an omelet but thought better of it) when we’d all chuckle as her dentures would fall out and slide into her crotch. Fluffy, our blind and hard of hearing hound dog with 3 legs would go over and start licking her dentures and Nana would just get the biggest smile on her face. Awwwww, those were the days. It just makes you all warm inside. Speaking of warm. I’ve got a new idea I’m gonna try this holiday. The past few years I’ve heard a lot of talk about turduckens which is a chicken stuffed inside a duck stuffed inside of a turkey and then deep fried. While that sounds delicious, I think I’m gonna try my hand at something new this year… a delicacy if you will. I’m gonna try a twinkie stuffed with an otter stuffed with a bear. Doesn’t that sound delicious? Can you imagine how much fun it will be to suck out all of the creamy filling? What should I call it? A twinkerbear? Don’t forget you heard it here first. Gay News At A Glance SAN FRANCISCO OFFERS FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO SOME OF ITS OLDEST GAY VENUES. Proposition J offers financial assistance to ‘legacy’ businesses; the city wants to help to preserve historic regions such as the Castro and the Mission The number of gay bars and clubs in many cities has been falling due largely to hook-up apps changing the way we meet, gentrification of “gayborhoods” driving up prices as well as the growing acceptance of gay couples in straight bars and clubs. Now, the oldest LGBT businesses in San Francisco may benefit from a proposition adopted by voters on last week. Proposition J concerns the adoption of a Legacy Business Historic Preservation Fund. The fund will provide assistance to landlords if they allow ‘legacy’ businesses to continue to rent premises; and grants to those same businesses. To qualify for a place on the legacy list businesses must have

been operating for a minimum of 20 years and, according to the wording on the ballot, ‘be at risk of displacement’. A nominated business will be judged on whether it contributes to an area’s history or identity and it must also agree to preserve its ‘identity, name and craft.’ Non-profits as well as commercial businesses may benefit from the fund. Long-running LGBT businesses in the city may be among the first to take advantage of the new financial assistance. The financial assistance will be in the region of $500 per full-time employee per year, with a cap of $50,000 a year. Landlords will be given $4.50 per square foot if they provide 10-year leases to the qualifying businesses. The city estimates the measure will cost around $3.7 million dollars in the 2015-2016 financial year. Supporters of the fund argued that the fund would protect small businesses against rising rents against chain restaurants and coffee stores with greater financial resources.

MORMONS RESIGN EN-MASSE FROM THE CHURCH. Thousands of Mormons plan to resign from the church over the church policy barring the children of married samesex couples from receiving baptism.

36: November 20, 2015

A woman in a same-sex marriage posted that she grew up Mormon and feared the new church policy would lead her relatives to disavow her. A spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints did not return our calls or emails

The policy, approved two weeks ago by the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, added same-sex marriage to the list of acts considered to be a renunciation of the Mormon faith and thus subject to church discipline, including excommunication.

The new church policy, which follows the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in June that legalized same-sex marriage, also prohibits natural or adopted children of gay married couples from being baptized in the faith until they turn 18, leave their parents’ home and personally disavow same-sex marriage or cohabitation.

“When this announcement came out, there was no way I was going to leave my name on the books,” said Lauren McNamara, 29, the organizer of the protest in Utah where hundreds of members submitted their resignation letters last week. Hundreds more have pledged to mail in their letters on the Facebook page posted for the event.

The church however this year did announced support for U.S. laws protecting gays and lesbians from discrimination in housing and employment. But its leaders have said sex should only happen between a wedded couple, and that they cannot sanction same-sex marriage.
