INTERVIEW BY MIKE BAHR

s ’ l e a k h c p i R a t T r at s r i F a Tre is

The latest dance track from Raphael aims to bring back the love in his music.

According to the young singersongwriter, most songs today emphasize independence and an “I’m too cool” attitude towards romance. He wants to bring back the desperation and vulnerability in music, when vocalists gushed over lost loves. “Superstar”, the first single from his upcoming album, “The Dark of My Mind”, is a love track: an unapologetically heartfelt love track. It tells the story of two guys. One leaves and becomes famous while the other stays at home. When the superstar returns, everyone in town wants a piece of him while the guy left behind simply wants the heart of his flame back. He wonders if his lost love remembers him and the feelings they once shared. Produced by Barb Morrison, best known for her work with Blondie and Rufus Wainwright, “Superstar” is clever, 20: October 23, 2015

sweet, a little sad and tricky but oh, such a treat. What’s the inspiration behind Superstar? Superstar is about knowing someone so well: their mind, body, favorite color, the way they smell… None of it matters, though, because the one thing you really want is their heart. How would you describe the sound of the song? Most of the tracks on my new album live in deep, dark water. What makes Superstar so special is it treads closer to shore. For me it has some moonlight shimmering through it. Musically, it has a very breezy sound. Do you consider yourself a rapper? I consider myself a storyteller.

My style of songwriting is stream of consciousness, which means I write when inspiration hits and the lyrics usually flow all at once. Sometimes, I wind up having a lot of words and the only way to convey the message is to express them over a beat. What’s your idea of a superstar? A superstar to me is someone who turns my world upside down. He could be a completely normal guy to everyone else but to me he is very special. He’s just as appealing as any guy on a magazine cover. What do you look for in a guy? A beautiful heart. (Laughing) It wouldn’t hurt if he also has brown eyes. What made you decide to come out so early in your music career? (Continued on page 22)

“I am grateful to have really supportive friends and family who have always encouraged me to be myself. I realize some don’t have that which is why I hope my music offers a space where they can feel perfectly normal.”

Raphael

I’m a writer and it was always important for me to tell these stories as myself. I just can’t see making music any other way. This album isn’t defined by my sexuality. I don’t really care about that. I just want to make music, not statements. So your songs are a reflection of Raphael? Absolutely. I’m calling the album “The Dark of My Mind”. It is a very intimate record. Did family and friends always accept you for being gay?

I am grateful to have really supportive friends and family who have always encouraged me to be myself. I realize some don’t have that which is why I hope my music offers a space where they can feel perfectly normal. Was it a conscience decision to showcase an interracial gay relationship in the video? No, it was never intentional. The actor playing my love interest simply fit the part. Was it a conscience decision to showcase so many heterosexuals in the video? No, the video was inspired by nineties party scene music videos that always depicted cool guys and girls throwing a bash at an awesome house. I wanted the video for Superstar to be like any other party scene music video. What would fans be surprised to learn about you? I don’t have a driver’s license. What’s next for Raphael? I am really looking forward to performing my songs live. …and maybe finding a superstar? (Laughing) I have a few superstars. I mean, we all have superstars in our lives: people we idolize like they are a celebrity. It’s just about finding the one worth wishing on. 22: October 23, 2015

MUSIC

By Jimmy Newsum

TRACKS TO BE THANKFUL FOR THIS SEASON Same-sex marriage is now a constitutional right. Trans issues have to come to the forefront of American mainstream. Of course, there is still a lot of work to be done but now is the time to appreciate our progress. Here are the top tracks we’re thankful for this season.

“GAGGED” Violet Chachki

The debut album from Atlanta’s very own reigning queen of Drag race is dynamic, sensual, deviant… the perfect compliment to the fetish bombshell we all know and love. In fact, Violet’s love of juju is heavily featured throughout the five-track EP. In “Bettie”, she plays the straight-laced housewife who’s a lady in the street but a freak in the sheets. In “Harlequin”, Violet plays the role of an intoxicating latex-wearing joker-deviant. The album draws inspiration from Violet’s real life experience working in dungeons. Her songs address gender roles and conformity, power play, exhibitionism, sex, confidence… It is an incredibly bold assertion of power and Violet deserves respect and admiration for going all-in.

“SUPERSTAR” Raphael

The young out star is coming for that Song Of The Season crown with a single that combines clever lyrics and a unique flow of spoken-word rap with a mesmerizing electro pop and reggae groove. “Superstar”, the first track from his upcoming “The Dark of My Mind” album, tells the story of high school sweethearts. One leaves and becomes famous while the other stays home to wonder if the old flame will remember the love they once shared. The song is written as a stream of consciousness and Raphael doesn’t shy from using male pronouns when professing his love. It’s bold, sultry, and just catchy enough to make get this kid on the path towards becoming a superstar himself.

“HEAVY HITTER” Theda

Did your summer crush leave you crushed? Theda is an exciting young powerhouse who puts her bleeding heart on the line, singing songs that take listeners on a journey through life, love and death. Each track on her new EP brilliantly captures the struggles and battles we have all faced after being kicked to the curb and dehumanized by the one person we thought we could rely on. The title track is especially moving. It has a rock/country vibe that is ripe for a club remix. There’s also the haunting “Liquid Poison” and the blues infused “Picking Up the Pieces.” It’s a brooding, dark album that is perfect ear candy for those cold, bitter nights when we just need to let out a cry.

“TEARING DOWN THE WALLS” Luciana

There’s no denying that Luciana is a masterful songwriter. She has long been a pioneer in the electro music scene and we’re thankful that her latest high-energy track plays like a delicious trip to a candy shop. Produced by Swedish DJ duo Cave Kings, the track serves as a wake-up call for all to free inhibitions, step out of boxes and go after dreams. “There are so many walls that get placed before us in life, real and imaginary,” she says. “It’s only when we step out of our comfort zone that we feel alive.” The fittingly chaotic, singsong chorus reaches such high points that it’s rather hypnotizing. It feels like she’s actually tearing down concrete walls, which is quite the great effect on a listener. If God is a DJ, this will become the next big party anthem of the season.

“HOT HOMO”

Cazwell featuring Big Dipper The latest record from the leading independent gay hip hopper has an addictive beat with NC-17 lyrics. Where Shmurda’s track is about killing people and selling drugs, Cazwell’s single takes on, what else, man-on-man sex. And why not? Gay men should feel as entitled to express themselves sexually as straight guys do, says Cazwell. That’s been his message since he first dropped ‘All Over Your Face’ in 2006. In “Hot Homo”, Caz is joined by another funny as all hell gay MC: the large, furry bear rapper known as Big Dipper. Together, they present a finely produced rap parody that also manages to poke fun at celebrities Chris Brown, James Franco and even Debra Messing. The music video is a must-see too.

SCISSR, THE LESBIAN WEB SERIES IS RETURNING Last year the first episode of Scissr premiered online. The show is the story of Three girls. Six relationships and One iPhone app. The pilot episode of Lauren Augarten’s award winning web series Scissr explores the romantic challenges of a group of lesbians living in Brooklyn, NY. Scissr is the story of Emily, Corey and Aviva, three gay girls in their twenties who live in Brooklyn, NY. Aviva just came out but doesn’t know a single lesbian, Corey’s too heartbroken to meet anyone, and Emily has already slept with half of Brooklyn, rendering her pool of choice miniscule. Once they connect through a iPhone app called SameSame, these girls will laugh, lie and do whatever it takes to help each other navigate life in this upbeat dramedy about a unique group of young women taking charge of their twenties. Since the pilot episode went public, Scissr has been an official selection at The LA New Media Film Festival (where it won best of LGBT category), Seattle Transmedia and Independent Film Festival, and the Brooklyn Web Fest. Jamie Clayton, from the pilot episode went on to star in the Wachowski’s Sense 8 for Netflix, and actress Paulina Singer, went on to star in WE TV’s South of Hell with Mena Suvari, which will be released later this year. The production of the next six episodes is underway and relying in part on contributions from fans via the indiegogo crowd funding website where the production is attempting to raise $30,000 in completion funds in the next 30 days. 28: October 23, 2015

Lauren Augarten is the Creator, Writer, Director and Producer, She brings fuses her experience in commercial & Cable TV, her most recent TV credits include Vince Gilligan / David Shore’s ‘Battle Creek’ on CBS & currently Baz Luhrmann’s ‘The Get Down’ for Netflix with her more independent aesthetic. Her film credits include ‘The Disgustings’ which screened at Outfest, LA and the LES Film Festival. I asked Lauren how this idea for Scissr came about? She replied, “I set about to make Scissr because nothing I saw on TV reflected the community I was discovering as a newly out lesbian. I wanted to see myworld on screen, and the overwhelmingly positive response to Scissr tells me that I am not alone in that feeling. We’ve expanded our team to include award winning writer & director duo April Maxey (who was selected for the prestigious ‘Berlinale Talents’ earlier this year) and Summer Czajak. We have an incredible team, and together with your help we’re ready to bring you a spectacular season 1!” You can find out more about Scissr by visiting the website, www.scissrtheseries.com, you can watch the first episode on YouTube under Scissr:Pilot or like them on Facebook at facebook.com/scissrtheseries and follow them on Twitter, @scissrtheseries. If you’d like to get involved and support this project you can go to www.idiegogo.com and type scissor into the search box, but hurry, they have less than 30 days to reach their goal.

INTERVIEW BY FREDRICK EVERHART

D N I H BE HE T H T O O B s gle ' tt a E the at Sco h t i W DJ: P t n de Resi

PHOTOS BY JOSH HOBGOOD

With a line stretching down Ponce de Leon two blocks long and bass that could be heard thumping from North Avenue, the Flock of Eagles party at the Atlanta Eagle was the place to be on Saturday night during Atlanta Pride. Over two thousand people came out to party and dance to the beats of six different DJs from around the nation including Atlanta’s own DJ Pat Scott and Vicki Powell. In addition to celebrating Atlanta Pride the event was also a grand birthday celebration for the incredibly talented Powell. I had an absolutely incredible time at the event and fell in love with the beats from DJ Pat Scott, the Atlanta Eagle’s resident DJ. So I caught up with DJ Pat Scott for FENUXE as he travelled to Seattle after Atlanta Pride to discuss the epic party and his sound. The Flock of Eagles party at the Atlanta Eagle was a wickedly awesome party! How did this great collection of DJs spinning for one colossal Pride party come about? 30: October 23, 2015

DJ Pat Scott: Thanks so much! Yes we all had a tremendous time! My good friend and fellow DJ Vicki Powell approached the Atlanta Eagle several months ago with Vicki’s concept to celebrate her birthday during Pride. It took a lot of coordination and effort to bring together the talent that came in for this event, and we couldn’t be happier with the result! I could totally tell that you were loving the Flock of Eagles atmosphere and crowd! Does that influence how or what you play? DJ Pat Scott: Oh yes! Like any performer you feed off of the energy the crowd is giving you. When playing like I do, it makes me want to take more risks and try new things which makes it way more fun than just playing tracks. When the crowd is having as much fun as you are, that’s when awesome memories happen. Pride was no exception!

So how does one get started as a DJ? I can’t imagine you just wake up and get to play for thousands of partiers during gay Atlanta’s biggest weekend? DJ Pat Scott: It was somewhere around 1990 when I started going out to clubs with my new found college friends. Back then, it was the tail end of the “club kid” scene. So everywhere we went it was about having an underground, unauthorized party scene. I was about 18 and I made friends with a few of the DJs in and around the Baltimore and DC area. That translated into me learning to spin on vinyl and occasionally getting to play for 30-45 min before they started. It was usually at some rave or once or twice at a club called Fifth Column; which is still one of my all-time favorite club settings (though it’s been gone now for many years). It was a great way to learn, and of course I got instant feedback when I screwed up; a real trial by fire. What was that first set like?

DJ Pat Scott: No doubt, I was a nervous wreck… I still get nervous to this day; but that’s where practice and confidence come in. While I’d love to say my first set rocked the house, and launched me into DJ Superstardome [he laughed]; I can say that it taught me a lot; mainly that I had much, much more to learn about reading the crowd, and having a great musical conversation with a large group. So after getting your feet wet with a soundboard, how have your sets changed since then? DJ Pat Scott: Certainly moving from 30-45 minutes to 5-8 hours of playing has changed how I play. Technically I’ve moved from vinyl, to CD, to all digital, adding complexity each time. One of the things that fascinated me about all six of the great DJs that played during the Flock of Eagles was that everyone had their own distinct sound. How would you describe yours? DJ Pat Scott: I guess, I’m really known for MashUps which kind of makes sense given my background. It gives me a way to throw sounds from all genres and types together into something surprising and new. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but generally we have lots of fun with ‘em . To answer your question more directly, as I go back and listen to some of my old recordings, or just looking across my catalog; I’ve been influenced by so many sounds and therefore my sound has changed too. I try to keep current, thus I can’t really be categorized into any one genre. I can honestly say I really love all dance music, and when possible play in a style that I’m feeling or the crowd is feeling. Got it. But how do you go about selecting which sounds and sounds to mix? DJ Pat Scott: Oy, well that’s a whole philosophy you know? I think everyone comes into a set with some idea of the tracks you want to play, then there’s the other side of allowing the crowd to take you where they want to go; that means you have to improvise and/or know your catalog really well. To be honest, I do generally have a loose idea of what I want to play and how those tracks fit into the night over all, but there’s not a real ‘set plan,’ just a beginning, middle, and end for me. In the DJ world we call it programming; and it’s the real tell-tale between someone playing tracks, and having a point of view - regardless of genre. It’s the toughest skill to learn, and it only comes from playing for live audiences. That must really keep you on your toes while you play. You’ll have to excuse me for sounding totally beyond my depth here… but, what are you actually doing in the booth to mix the songs and sounds?

DJ Pat Scott: I guess you mean technically? Woof, that’s a big question! So it’s a pretty complicated process when you break it all down, but in essence you’re creating synchronicity between beats of two or more tracks. When beats are perfectly aligned they form a single, new “beat” making the tracks sound like one. From there there’s a myriad of effects, harmonies, and other techniques such as loops and samples, that create a “mix” that transitions from one to the next. These days I’m really enjoying playing with adding live production techniques into the normal track mixing so you’re actually creating remixes live. You heard some of this during Flock of Eagles, and can expect to hear more as I become more proficient; it’s a lot of fun! Nice. That makes sense. So what are some of these production techniques that you like to include. We all know about the crowd pleasing bass drops. Yes, I’ll admit it. I may sound basic saying it, but I love them. What techniques can we expect to hear in a DJ Pat Scott set? DJ Pat Scott: Hmmm, well who doesn’t love a good bass drop? Sadly, I think they’re getting a bit overdone, but when they hit at the right time… WHOA! Along with those, I really, really love deep, thick, bass lines that make you wanna shake your booty [He laughs playfully]. So we already know that we can find you at the Atlanta Eagle, but we’ve heard that you have played at some great places all over the planet. What has been your favorite place to play outside of Atlanta? DJ Pat Scott: I’ve been pretty fortunate to be able to play at venues all over the USA, Canada, and Europe. In terms of my favorite…well, apart from my favorite Atlanta crowd, I’d have two say there were two places that stand out. First is Palermo Italy – Venue by the sea overlooking the water while the crowd danced below. It was just incredible Second is Tourin, Poland – Great, great underground club, and some of the most appreciative fans in all of Europe. So what’s the craziest place you’ve ever played? DJ Pat Scott: [He laughs as he ponders his response] Great question. Playing live on a parade float has to count up there among the top five. In all seriousness, I’d have to say this club in Poznan, Poland. It was a converted WWII underground facility that had made some sort of machinery. The original building dated back to the 15th century…I think… and had been converted during the German occupation. I never got a straight answer, but I’m pretty sure the facility had something to do with some of the darker activities that went on during that time. Gave me an all over creepy feeling, but conversely it was kinda cool to see these people turning it into something positive for the next generation. Any venue you want to play but haven’t gotten the opportunity to do so yet? DJ Pat Scott: The Vatican. I’m still waiting on my invite. [He laughs] Just kidding. You know, I’m really blessed to have been invited to loads of cool places. I played a pride festival at the O2 arena in the UK a few years back and really had an awesome time with that. If I ever had the chance, I’d love 32: October 23, 2015

to play more music festivals or something. There’s definitely something magical about that. I agree. And I could totally see you spinning somewhere like TomorrowWorld at the Atlanta Stage. And speaking of the future. Give us the dirt. Where is the Atlanta DJ scene going? Are we transitioning from one sound to another like the other metro areas? DJ Pat Scott: Well I certainly hope so. It’s pretty clear to me at least that EDM mainstream is moving from what was formally known as Dutch house or Dirty Dutch, to more of a Deep House vibe, which has been ‘it’ in the UK for quite some time. All of the big EDM producers like Guetta, Avicii, Calvin Harris, etc. are adding more ‘deep house’ basslines which are slower BPM, and have a larger focus on melody and bass lines. I’m also hearing more analog sounds coming back, like big piano keys etc. It’s arguably revisiting some of the old school house masters like Frankie Knuckles. We’re lucky. It is really a great time to ‘re-live’ some of these sounds. All that said, I think that’s what’s happening now. From there, I’m seeing a revival of minimal, tech, and industrial house. Some of the hottest underground DJs I’ve been fortunate enough to work with of late are totally about that sound. Where is Atlanta on that map? Tough one, it really depends on the crowd I guess. We certainly have our venues that specialize in Hip Hop, Tribal/Circuit, etc. which is fine; but I don’t see as much of that in other cities. Atlanta, has a history of being a fantastic place to party. A history that, in my opinion, has waned over the years; but working with artists like we had for Flock of Eagles shows our spirit is alive and well and we’re ready to reclaim the “Hotlanta” tradition. So what does DJ Pat Scott do when you aren’t mixing in the DJ booth? DJ Pat Scott: I maintain a pretty hectic schedule with my day job, family of fur babies, and community activities. These days I’m more likely to be found in the Atlanta airport than home. However, when I am there I love spending time with my three Golden Retrievers, a miniature schnauzer, and a special someone. I serve on the Board of Directors for the Atlanta Pride Committee, the Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation, and the Global LGBT employee resource group at my employer. When possible I like to marry up events to benefit these organizations or others like Lost and Found Youth, Atlanta Bucks Rugby, and CHRIS Kids. We’ve had some pretty spectacular events in the past, Britney Bash, Mash Attacks, and of course Flock of Eagles. I’m really looking forward to bringing new and innovative concepts to Atlanta, sadly for now, I need to run catch a plane! Thank you guys so much for your support and I’m thrilled you loved Flock of Eagles! I hope to see you all again real soon! Ah, ending on a teaser! Always the showman. Thanks so much for spending some time with us and letting us find out a little more about what goes on behind the booth! I can’t wait until your next set at the Atlanta Eagle!

Gay News At A Glance RAND PAUL, EMPLOYERS SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIRE PEOPLE FOR BEING GAY.

A democratic bill for the Federal Equality Act which would end discrimination in employment, housing, health care services, education, federal funding, credit and service on juries has yet to pick up one single republican sponsor.

Kentucky senator Rand Paul was asked at a campaign event this week whether he believes an employer should be able to fire people for being gay or trans. He replied: “I think really the things you do in your house, if you could just leave those in your house, they wouldn’t have to be part of the workplace. He continued: “What happens is it sets up a whole industry for people who want to sue. So if you happen to be gay, and you get fired... now you have a reason you can sue them. It’s almost impossible sometimes. People don’t put up a sign, ‘I’m firing you because you’re gay’... It’s something that’s very much disputed. “I don’t know that we need to keep adding to different classifications to say the government needs to be involved in the hiring and firing. “I think society is rapidly changing, and if you are gay, there are plenty of places that will hire you. “I’m really not recommending the government be involved in this issue.

ANTI-GAY PASTOR CALLS FOR BOYCOTT OF ALL COMPANIES THAT ACCEPT GAYS.

mega majority, those of us who are Bible believers. I want to call for a boycott, and here’s the level at which the boycott should be understood. If you know of a business that is owned by Sodomites, for instance Tylenol... we’re not going to buy Tylenol anymore.”

The viciously anti-gay Pastor James David Manning of Atlah Worldwide Missionary Church in Harlem, New York, announced this week he will try to boycott every business or company that “accepts sodomites.”

In the almost ten minute long video manning continued with: “There are many others, General Mills and many other organizations that will out themselves as being sodomite friendly. We need to understand that we can boycott them.”

In a video posted on the church’s YouTube channel Manning stated: “I want to call for a national boycott against sodomy in America. He went on, “What we need to come to terms with, and God has shown me this, is that the Sodomites with a Sodomite in the White House, think they now have America under their absolute control.”

Manning lists the 379 firms who signed a Supreme Court employers’ brief earlier this year, calling for equal marriage which include Walt Disney, Coca-Cola, Nike, Visa, American Apparel, Verizon, General Mills, Barnes & Noble, Facebook, Twitter and Google which owns YouTube where he posts his anti-gay tirades. The list includes Starbucks where he says the lattes are made with the cream of sodomites.

The rant continued with: “But Almighty God has revealed to me that we are in a

TURING PHARMACUETICALS UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION The New York Attorney General has launched an investigation into the company that raised the price of an AIDS drug by 5500%. You may remember, Martin Shkreli, the 32-year-old founder and chief executive of Turing Pharmaceuticals, who became the most hated man in America last month after buying the rights to 62-year-old drug Daraprim and raising the price from $17.00 to $700 per pill, an increase of over 5500%. Following the public reaction to the increase, Shkrell promised to lower the price but has yet to do so. The pill costs $1 to make. New York’s attorney general launched a probe last week into

TSA WILL NO LONGER CALL TRANS TRAVELERS’ BODY PARTS ‘ANOMALIES’ The Transportation Security Administration will no longer refer to transgender travelers’ body parts as “anomalies,” officials say. This decision comes in the wake of the incident involving Shadi Petosky live-tweeting her experience of being detained for several hours by the TSA. She was subjected to pat-downs and scanned for traces of explosives. Her story gave rise to a trending hashtag #travelingwhiletrans, which shows how often traveling

Turing Pharmaceuticals over the move, which may have violated the law. NY-AG Eric Schneiderman is investigating whether the company broke antitrust rules, by attempting to hamper competition from generic competitor drugs.

Such restricted distribution can make it more difficult for generics manufacturers to get the samples of a brand-name product they need to do the required testing to show that their generic copy is equivalent to the original.”

A report from the New York Times stated: “While competition might ordinarily be expected to deter such a massive price increase, it appears that Turing may have taken steps to prevent that competition from arising.” Daraprim is 62 years old, it is not protected by patents, it can freely be made by competitors, however due to the smaller market, generic drug makers have not chosen to do so. The New York Times report went on: “Normally the price hike from Turing would see a generic competitor emerge – but the drug was removed from wholesalers and retails stores.

regulations and the TSA’s lack of gender-sensitive training have made transgender travelers feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Last week, 32 members of Congress signed an open letter to the TSA urging the agency to change its current protocols for screening transgender passengers. The letter recommended, among other things, that TSA body screenings not rely on subjectively chosen gender. Harper Jean Tobin, director of policy at the National Center for Trans Equality, “They haven’t retrained their machines to be able to tell the difference between a threat and something that is just part of someone’s body...if they can’t do that, it raises questions about the utility, effectively and appropriateness of using these machines as a primary method of screening.”

MILEY CYRUS IS PLANNING A CONCERT WHERE EVERYONE (INCLUDING THE AUDIENCE) IS NUDE. Miley was recently in the headlines after she recently released a graphic new song about having sex with another woman. She explained that the track ‘Bang Me Box’ was a “pretty self-explanatory” about lesbian sex, included the line: “Want to lick it so much that it’s almost like I taste it on the tip of my tongue.”

For her next video, Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips who worked on her album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz wrote on Instagram: “Oh f**k! Miley Cyrus is planning a show where her, the band (us) and the audience are all COMPLETELY naked with milk (well white stuff that looks like milk) is being spewed everywhere. “It’s a video (in the works) for #mileycyrusandherdeadpetz song The Milky Milky Milk.” No information is currently available about the release date of the video.
